i'm a small town my biggest influence was my older brother he's three and a half years older than me so he got to experience everything in life before i did he was a superstar athlete he was a businessman now he a father now he everything i want to become when i'm kind of done playing football but it was always competitive so i always had to one-up him and everything which i did naturally sports has always been a huge part of my family i tell people all the time that you know football is my life sports in general is my life it's a part of my life and where are you right now with with your commitment with usc you know you're obviously out here on an official business so you know the trojans are obviously still a school that is very much uh part of your uh equation as far as recruiting is concerned but where are are you just as tight right now with ufc as you were committed to commit um right now i just say my other videos just to make sure um you know get something out of them also you know i gotta make sure have time because it's my future so um but yeah i'm so strong you'll see from here this coaching situation or a little uncertainty uh making a little nervous yeah that makes me a little nervous makes me think that's why um these other visits are important um visit even my unofficial visit like today uh this weekend's visit is important so i can make sure things like that uh i can you know talk to the coaching staff about them maybe get things cleared up so i won't have any uncertainty brentwood academy's jalen ramsey found himself in a familiar position over and over again on friday night the winner's podium at the state track meet ramsey a florida state football signing began his day by breaking the state record in the long jump with his jump of 25 three and a quarter my technique was um probably the best i've had all season my body felt renewed and like risky so i hit the board perfect he followed that performance with the first place finish in the 400 and a third in the 200. ramsey was beat by his teammates demontre wade and cj sanders who took first and second respectively that's probably the greatest feeling that's that's a better feeling than my individual victories honestly because i'm not quite sure i don't want to really think of it speak on it right now but if you're looking forward to that that may have set the deal for our 3p and it did the combined scores of ramsay and his teammates gave britwin academy enough points to take the division 2 double a team track title dave hooker from recruiting nation joins us now for the latest bit of bad news on this trojan recruiting class jaylen ramsey has assigned with florida state just moments ago we dawned on the seminoles hat signed his letter of intent which he'll send in a little bit later and we started hearing this chatter that florida state had made a strong push yesterday i'm told that southern cal i got in touch with the family last night and made a last-ditch effort to secure ramsey who committed last summer but to no avail he goes to florida state i think it's a little bit of a surprise concerning his teammate is signing with florida we thought the gators were very much in play he said he liked vanderbilt early in the recruiting process but in the end the seminoles now have a four-star prospect that can help them pretty quickly all right dave hooker from recruiting nation the latest jaylen ramsey number 14 of espn 300 will not go to usc instead going to florida state so a good pick up for jimbo fisher but it's continuing a theme during this recruiting cycle for southern california of course usc is under scholarship reductions this year they can't i think the number we had was 18 counting back counters but usc miscalculated some of the guys that they had told could be early enrollees when that time came mid-term there was no spot for them to enroll due to those scholarship reductions as a result they've now lost seven guys since the end of the season once committed to them they've decided to go on somewhere else shelley smith is joining us now she's covering usc today so what's what's the reaction what's the mood around usc with with this uh change and the rash of de-commitments from the trojan program well believe it or not reese the sun did come up this morning at usc now lane just didn't bring any requests well i don't know yet we haven't have any official signings yet but lane and staff have been in their offices all night they were calling the west coast recruits until midnight and then the east coast recruits at 3 a.m now he sent me this text picture of their stash which is pretty much every energy drink in existence will which will be rating later on this morning they are waiting now on the announcement of linebacker quentin powell who should announce on our air at about 9 15 pacific he's from florida where kiffin has had a pipeline of sorts for years and he was high school teammates with current trojan leonard williams who was very productive in his freshman year kiffin and company are likely still reeling from the loss of two decommits to ucla and still sweating out the impending announcements of four others reece all right shelley so usc still the the guys that they have the limited numbers have been our excellent players shelly smith will keep us up to date from los angeles throughout the day here on national signing day so as you look at this now thomas to bring you guys back in what's the impact of usc losing these guys well it's significant let's focus on the positives the positives are with the limited numbers they've got a quality level of player it's some positions of need i don't think there's any question about that the downside here is will there be the enough of them over the course of two to three recruiting classes successfully to put together a roster that's going to have enough depth and enough overall talent and that's saying that you're not going to have injuries you're not going to have defections you're not going to have guys pan out that's creating a perfect world painting so i think that any time that your numbers are reduced and and we'll talk about this today your margin of error narrows significantly you can't afford to miss you'd optimally optimally like to have an 80 success rate on a great year probably going to be closer to 60 65 percent if you're only bringing in 15 to 18 guys 60 to 65 not going to cut it for you lane and his staff know it it's a big dilemma they're going to have to navigate around it and it's part of a reality right now if you're a trojan there's two big issues i see one is when you lose recruits but when you lose recruits for somebody you're gonna have to play so if they defect from usc to ucla it's not they're not going to have them they're going to have to play against them and those kids will have a chip on their shoulder the other thing we've talked about for years is when you have a depleted roster whether you have 75 scholarships or whatever the case may be you can't practice the way you want to practice you can't hit as often for fear of injury and so what happens is and and ask monty kiffin about how how can you teach defense how can you play great defense if you don't have enough people to hit on a daily basis or in fall camp and spring ball as much as you would like and that's what's cost them more than anything else it's so difficult for everybody to understand how difficult it is to overcome this cloud of ncaa sanctions and and the sanctions that are there you see it what al's dealing with at miami uh what lane's dealing with at usc so that's number one factor but then the second thing is the energy of a program is so important and all of a sudden the disappointing finish that happened the negativity starts coming and then the success ucla is having to flip it all of a sudden there you go momentum equals energy and and when you start losing that energy and things become negative around your program it's so difficult to overcome it without some great win with academy out in tennessee it was the number two cornerback overall in the entire 2013 class and he was also the number one player in all of tennessee he was the top he was a top 15 overall recruit also now he originally committed to usc out of high school but then he decided to go to florida state and hey it ended up being a great choice because he helped him win a national title during his freshman season and he was must watch tv it's not a surprise to us that jaylen ramsey has panned out to be one of the better college football players in the country and a potential first rounder at the cornerback position out of florida state this was a kid that was a tremendous athlete throughout his high school career did so many different things at brentwood academy was a track star and had superior speed um but you know also tremendous ball skills he had 614 yards receiving as a senior eight touchdowns uh three interceptions on defense we saw him at the five star challenge the very first one we did in atlanta and he showed that he could be a press corner or a guy that peaks and closes and by that i mean he can play off he can bait the quarterback he can jump routes very smooth in his back pedal big kid as i mentioned about six foot and a half 190 pounds long arms and and very good explosion to the football and when he got there he played the ball extremely well he went up to get some great wide receivers at that five star challenge uh in solo coverage plus also played some off coverage and made a lot of plays that was sort of his coming out party where we started to say okay who's the best cornerback in this class is it vernon hargraves is it kendall fuller is it jaylen ramsey and it just shot him up the charts for us finishing number 10 in the country overall number three at corner in a great cornerback class but now he's emerging as that guy with that size that i mentioned it's a rarity he could play safety or corner my three years here at florida state have been you know everything and more my first year coming going undefeated winning the national championship my second year going to the first college football playoffs just being in this atmosphere is fun just because you know i get to reminisce i get to think back on some of the memories i had while i was here in tallahassee that's a good thing i got to see some of my old friends some of my old teammates and coaches look at katie track coach how you doing yeah i know i was big in the track business right here at florida state and then 2013 national championship that i was part of i got 42 first round nfl draft picks definitely about to make that 43. from the time i got to tallahassee as a freshman i told all the coaches as long as i give me an opportunity i'm going to go in with me and starting a job playing blind period so instead of going out and things like that i would just stay in my room study the playbook all night until i got sleepy i learned the playbook like the back of my hand then then the game started slowing down for me it started getting easier for me before the games would coach coach fisher will be standing right here we would have chairs and everything around and you know and we'll break it down in the middle and get ready to go beat somebody because i know i never lost in in that stadium i didn't never lost so [Music] being on the field winning being you know at a high caliber school like that that speaks for itself that's that's really where my enjoyment came [Music] my last visit here in tallahassee now is so it's very relaxed for me [Music] i killed the combine i was in the tops of pretty much everything especially in my position but in the overall combine everybody gets caught in his abilities but i think one of the greatest things jalen's done is how he's impacted the guys around him how he's made them better by watching him practice him prepare and his competitiveness he's put his personality on those guys people used to always call me a little prime time or something walking around campus because i was the first to start since dion and i just wanted to be jalen ramsey i wanted you know to start my own legacy oh we got twins y'all we got twins y'all we got odell beckham and odell uh look at him hey camera at jacksonville jaguar now because i really felt the vibe here just other florida state guys here so kind of reuniting with talvin and rashad so i've always felt involved i'm happy to be back in florida just just two hours away from florida state so it's an exciting moment for me and my family and i think taking some losses early to his cousin and his older brother it made him have that drive punished by ramsey be great five-o i love you two never doesn't get police he's gonna shoot up the team and by the time i call china it'll be too late for me to get to that and it's going to be a wide the return of pro bowl corner jalen ramsey who missed the first four sessions due to the birth of his daughter more on that in just a second but first of course there's a big game and receiver for jalen to prepare for for week one of the regular season the jaguars will head up to the big apple to take on the g man and that team has a receiver that just might match jalen's amount of fire in odell beckham jr ramsey says he's ready i mean let's get this out the way right now he's a good receiver we all know that um but y'all know me at the same time if y'all think that like yeah he good but i'm good too like if y'all want to say the best of his i'm the best at my position so we're going to go at it we're going to get a people a show first game of the first game of the season you're going to have some wins i'ma have some wins i just plan on having more wins ramsey arrived at camp this morning after spending the last week or so with his girlfriend and newborn daughter who was born last week no one was worried about the shape jalen would return in because of course he's jaylen ramsey today he talked about what it was like being back in the one baby drawer he does not have to do most part we have a really good uh agreement that i you know i won't necessarily have to change diapers what kind of trade off yeah my girl's just dope as hell jaylen ramsey doesn't want to be there and i suspect that before this outburst he didn't want to be there then he shouldn't that is what's wrong with him saying yeah i'd like to get traded and we get more now from our adam schefter who first reported this trade bottom line here adam what was the impetus for the deal zubin from the time that jalen ramsey's back acted up the truth of the matter was his plan was not to play again for the jacksonville jaguars in the end his plan to defy their orders to sit out games to say that his back was bothering him basically in the end provided the impetus for jacksonville to trade him to the los angeles rams now the jaguars had a number of teams that were interested but they just felt that the price of two first-round draft picks and a fourth round pick in 2021 as well was just too much to pass up they knew that it wasn't going to get better with jalen ramsey but jalen ramsey's back will get better by going to l.a he goes to l.a i'm with the gang and it's going to be a robbery so tuck your check the all-pro cornerback 24 years old in his prime i love an organization it says you know what whatever you guys need i have it available go get the best players available and let's try
