all working together [Music] this game has changed in complexion entirely in the first two quarters this was first quarter statistics starting reversal you look in the first quarter the giants had the ball 12 minutes only two minutes 58 seconds eight first downs to one first down then you go the second quarter and it kind of flips over now the cowboys had to ball over 11 minutes a little over four minutes for the giant so it was a first quarter won by the giants the second quarter won by the cowboys and now we go on to the third and ali sheikh will get things started [Music] [Applause] [Music] always special in the league i think they'll get that thing figured out pretty soon and it's darn near they've made so many things illegal on the kick blocking that there's not much legally that you can do so on most of the kicks you're going to have that penalty if you have any contact at all you know what i mean i think sometimes they make rules it's easy to make real estate thou shalt not do this they cannot do that you cannot do that [Music] sometimes they have to look at well if we can't do all those things what's left that we can do legally to make this game flow smoothly that really is so true you'll hardly get a kick off or a punk return of any length when there's not an illegal block pogba boom is still the quarterback it was five out of nine in the first half got some blockers around the corner or set outside to 15 to about the 16. mark haynes made the stop with the catboy cowboys got around the corner with two blockers in front of door set in good shape you know one thing that these cowboys can do as we talk about tony dorsett and being able to get around a corner what that does to a defense is that stretches it widthwise then when you have a guy like tony hill thrill hill who can get deep then that stretches it the other way then you have the defense where they have to defend the whole field second and three cowboys have it at their own 16. first series at half you talk about a player that can really affect the football game and that's lawrence taylor you know when we were talking to tom landry yesterday he told us something that tom doesn't really throw around a lot of accolades but he said of all the years he's been in the league that's a long long time as a player an assistant coach and a head coach of the dallas cowboys he said lawrence taylor is the best outside linebacker he's ever seen and from landry that is real praise and i think i'd have to agree with him would you i would too 7-6 dallas leads i think we can see it here pat number 56 in the right part of the picture here now watches him as he comes in here watch his right shoulder he looks like he just throws it in there and right there in the contact as he made contact it looked like it jolted him back a little it looks like his right shoulder neck area that's what they're working with on the sideline over there his neck right side of his neck and he's telling the doctor 20 yards in the air and about 10 yards deep they caught the cowboys though the word on lawrence taylor is that he has a pinched nerve in his neck let's see if we can see that holding right there you little bit it looks like he should be back [Applause] [Music] remember a couple years ago when when timmy newsom was a fullback tom landry moved him to tailback and he said he didn't want to play tail back and he left camp for a while and he thought he would sit out there and find landers to let him sit he's going to be a tailback so timmy newson finally came back and said okay i'll be a tailback st louis and we look forward to seeing jim hannathan's cardinals and the nfl today will have a special feature on the coach of the saint louis cardinals jim hennepin coach who believes in building through the draft and this year it's paying off i guess they've really got some passing attack john they do you know it's a thing we were talking about earlier if you can stretch a defense like the cardinals can with the roy green and then stretch it the other way with a stump mitchell one lotus anderson then you have those defenses in a real bind tony hill hoga boom was high mark payne's the here's the combination that did it for the first touchdown dickey to kaufman and the big tight end battles his way into the end zone on the saints and now the packers lead it 17-10 back to pass we're in the third quarter here with the cowboys leading the giants 7-6 the second meeting of the year between these two teams the giants won the first one sims intended for carpenter he throws low bob brunig on the covers let's watch that punt you know on the on the front coverage the only two guys that can go down when the ball snapped to the two outside guys so they draw a crowd they're double you see here they're hitting them further then they have two guys on them and wherever they go they double that outside guy all the way down the field like the ball carry on offense for us those outside guys brought up front cover that's a thank goodness job carpenter cuts back and has some room it's outside the 30 about the 33 struggles for more one thing i think the giants have to do is i think they have to open up on first down it looks like a pretty good shot to me they you know they've been running mostly on first down now i think the cowboys are in the defense on first down if they would want him in i think that's the time to throw now and not get in those third long situations this is third and three mcconkey's in the game as a wide receiver that cowboys are short and quick [Music] that's a catch bobby johnson gets the strike from sims ron fellows on the coverage cowboys in that all out blitz again you know and that's the advantage and not being third and long if you gain relatively success on first and second down then you're able to throw a pattern like this to bobby johnson it's just about a three or four yard pattern see they had three yards to go he runs about a yard or two up beyond the first down marker to get the first down so then you can handle the blitz and get rid of the ball quickly 8 45 left to play third quarter first down giants well with their own 40. sims gifts to carpenter over the right side carpenter surges ahead for about seven yards just to update the situation on danny white word we have is that he has a bruised shoulder and may or may not return i get from that i gather from that that he could come back if it was really necessary well you know the bad news is that he has a bruised shoulder if there's any good news in it it's his left shoulder we've been replaced by hoga boom right now it's the giants on second and shorts second and three and they're gonna throw sims sacked by randy white john dutton was there also now randy white looks like a guy who plays the game and at some point he said look it's time to take this thing over i've had enough of this it goes boom into this guy works to the outside and when he grabs you you've been grabbed budget from the end zone he's he's right there first now he's working against art and that's a a stunt there the end jeff goat starts to the inside white comes to the outside that'll make it third and 14. here's that situation that john madden was talking about that you don't want to get into it then they can come at you with that glitch fellows good coverage they put the heat on sims bobby johnson the intended receiver that's a lonely feeling out there by yourself like that if you're the cover guy but i'll tell you that may be a better feeling than the one phil sims had with all those guys about it i think i'd rather have that lonely feeling watch phil sims here just as he gets rid of the ball and they get him high low from the front and the back just to be frozen jennings gary allen lets it bounce it bounces back toward the giants into the field they down it robbie jones fielded it and the cowboys will take over after a 34-yard punt by dave jennings 7-17 left to play in the third quarter alice seven giant six remains 7 17 left to play third quarter mike renfro and tony hill are the wide receivers hoga boom the quarterback [Applause] springs over the left side a good surge about four yards leonard marshall on the bottom of the pile dorset is back in the game by the way they were talking about the giants only averaging 2.9 yards of carry well the cowboys have also been having it their problems running and i think that's one of the reasons that they're struggling this year they're averaging 3.5 but they really haven't unparked that run all year i think if there's anything that bothers tom landry about this team it's that they've had so many changes to make in their offensive line set up marshall takes down hoga boom from behind he beat howard richards he did a job at howard richards that time before he beat him he just took richards and he drive he drove him back into the backfield about five yards he's over there on the other side he's coming from the other side you can see richard's feet right there and then he comes off but when he gets there at danny white he was going for that helmet there i mean gary hogan hoganburg he's going for that helmet area he just took richards and frozen five yards into the backfield that's the fourth giant sack of the day as the wave sweeps around texas stadium [Applause] again under heavy pressure from lawrence taylor down he goes donnelly was the intended receiver one thing about this game these teams are going after that quarterback today watch taylor when he gets zeroed in on you you're zeroed in on that was from the other side that was byron hunt on that one i'll tell you they are zeroing in on those quarterbacks on both sides today warren back to front mcconkey back deep for the giants [Music] [Applause] [Music] is exactly what he did get out of bounds 37 yards the net on the punt jennings knock it warren knocked at 48 yards down a seven the giant six we have six minutes left to play in the third quarter giants have the ball with their own 36 and a half yard line they go with two setbacks this time [Music] [Applause] carpenter passes to the outside does a lot of running but only gets a couple of yards before bill bates gets him down you wonder why bill bates is in there he's not in at strong safety he's in a middle linebacker the cowboys have gone back to using their 4-0 defense which means four defensive linemen seven defensive backs of course bill bates is one of those defensive backs he lines up here at the linebacker position they're saying you aren't going to beat us running if you're going to beat us you're going to throw it and you're going to throw it against seven defensive backs second and 10. [Music] sims back to throw he does have time and he has a receiver lionel manuel taken down by fellows but they move into cowboy territory a pickup of 20. i think lionel manuel is going to be one of those big plays guys for the giants i mean he's going to be someday he could be like a cliff branch see that quickness he has he's down the field boom and and then wiffy goes to the inside fellowes is still in his back pedal okay this kid has a lot of life and he's putting some light in this giant offense 511 just 175 but he's got that quickness [Applause] the give is to carpenter straight ahead just for a couple lock running at 425 now left to play third quarter the giants grinding it into cowboy territory they've got two field goals from ali sheik and that's all the points second and seven one thing this giant offense can't do is go into a shot i think they just have to keep attacking just keep going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] at the dallas 12 yard line dexter quickscale took him out [Applause] [Music] i think that's the way that a team like the giants beats the team like dallas just go back just let the thing go just go back throw darn near every down hope you get the protection when you do you're going to have guys open here we see zeke moat coming out there and doing a good job of getting a big play now the key to this is protection they the giants have been doing a good job of protection against the cowboys without the blitz the problem they've been having is a blip you see that time no blitz good protection [Music] first down at the 11 29 yard gain sends to low out here is joe morris inside the 10 to about the eighth dexter coit scale and company john dutton i don't know for sure but that that may have been the first time that joe morris has carried the ball since he fumbled in the first half that's the type of thing i think they have to do i mean you you go and you keep stretching the defense keep doing it keep going after i don't think you can go into a shell in any way well they didn't do it last week against the redskins they came out firing in the second half although they had a good lead [Music] sims looking for that touchdown and he got it lionel manuel over everson wall giants take the lead [Applause] well just watch it that's just that little quick up you see when you're down there about the 10 yard line you take a three-step dot throw it up over the receiver's outside shoulder you see that where there's no way walls can get it that ball is either going to be complete for a touchdown or it's going to be an incomplete pass but it won't be intercepted see it's thrown right now they both still have their back to it up over manuals outside shoulder where there's no way everest walls jumped but he can't get that ball look at sims he'll give you a reaction like a linebacker ed jones is the injured cowboy who's down still on the ground he's been unusually durable over the years [Music] they went 63 yards and six plays kept the ball two minutes and 49 seconds sims record on the day is 13 carries for 28 yards next week our nfl schedule is double header week on cbs new orleans will be at atlanta detroit washington philadelphia miami san francisco goes to cleveland those are the first games of our doubleheader then the giants will be at tampa bay and the cowboys will be in st louis that game was scheduled to be an early game a noon start now they've changed it later so most of the country will see that and how important is that game going to be and this one dallas and saint louis tied at six and three the giants just a game back along with washington and the philadelphia at four and five depending upon what happens today washington of course plays tomorrow night against atlanta you know the interesting thing i think that it's going to go down this way all season in this eastern division and i could see a very strong possibility of both wild cards coming out of this eastern it helped from bill courier i think one thing that the cowboys are going to have to do now is find a way to get the ball to an outside receiver i mean they can throw it to their their full back and their backs and tight end but i think they have to get tony hill involved in this game or at least doug cosby and start getting bigger chunks of yard well cosby's been micked a little bit and not playing fred cornwell has been the titan here's the screen pass to dorsett can't hang on just as well the giants have people out there [Music] i think what's happening here i think that they are you know working their screens and those short things but they have to get the ball deeper here we see lawrence taylor and what he does he starts to rush takes on a block just works to the outside through blockers grabs the ball keeps going i'll tell you he'll give you a full game now dallas seven completions that's right seven five have been to running backs not as john set to the wide receivers renfro comes [Music] a penalty marker down [Music] you know he's able to find those running backs but i think eventually they have to get the tight end or wide receivers and spread out that defense gonna be holding call against the cowboys number 68 offense a push in the face third down 68 is herbert scott who is not playing at his normal left guard position he's playing left tackle you know howard richards started out there and he's been having a little trouble on pass protection with leonard marshall so they put the veteran herbert scott in there now what he was called on is that initial move instead of hitting on the shoulder pads going up and hitting in the face third and 16. ogre boom ducks under the pressure being chased again has some time has donnelly and he can't come won't do it in this game third down and seven just over a minute left to play in the third quarter crowd coming to life sims out of the pocket sandlings fire is to the sideline lionel manuel made the catch was knocked out of bounds but they got the first down 11 yards 27 ron fellows knocked him out of bounds you know this has been a good play for the giants we're watching it's a little organized pass it's away from courier is knocked out of bounds by lawrence taylor yeah we were talking about being a practice yesterday and this is what the cowboys were working on with these screen passes but i think they're at a point now that that the giants are playing so close to the line of scrimmage that they're looking for the short passes to the backs they're looking for the screens they're all there seeing position i think that the screens i know that the screens are effective when you drive the defense off and make them play deep and hit the screen in front of them the giants are playing very tight on the cowboys third and four cowboys at their own 26. boulder boom out of the spread lawrence taylor showing blitz now look at them gotta hurry they just barely got it off pogba boom [Music] so much confusion they just barely got the play off i think what hoga boom was saying is that they were in a in a formation it wasn't legal and he had to get another man up in the line of scrimmage he finally got that up but then he got pressured and no one was open so he had to throw it away anyway he had lawrence taylor right in his face gonna run from an illegal formation anyway warren comes into punt frustrated tom landry at the moment cowboy offensive unit's been very quiet but you know in the third quarter their total passing the cowboy was minus [Applause] 42-yard punt by warren and with 35 left to play the giants continue to lead the cowboys 134. to be like brook branch used to be for the oakland raiders i was talking about the future he very well could be right now this is the type of thing that you need the guy that can get deep watch him he's on walls here walls is playing starting playing his own then he gets a bump manual just runs right by him he has that great speed and quickness and can adjust on the ball just runs right past the two defenders i'll tell you he is an exciting little guy he really is rookie from the university of pacific california first and goal the ball's at the three morris from behind by ed jones a yard loss maybe two [Music] i'm surprised that bill parcells called that same play again they were early in the first half they were in the same position on the field they ran the same play to joe morris and that was a playing fumble down remember the five earnings yet second and goal up to five [Music] eugene lockhart in the middle linebacker eugene the hitting machine second and goal from the five now they lost two carpenter is hit by randy white before he can get back to the line of scrimmage i'll tell you randy white got penetration there he hits the gap now watching carpenter just gets the ball he's lucky that he was able to hold on to that ball there wasn't a fumble watch randy white 54 he's going to shoot that gap the center blocks left he goes right in there and he shoots the gap and he gets carpenter right after he gets a handoff that could have been a fumble very easily good play by parker hold on to that right they lost another yard that's third down and goals back at the six sims back to throw fires for the corner for ernest gray incomplete i'll tell you one thing i think the cowboy defense really rose to the occasion down there on that goal line i mean they were they were is danny white that's the thing that tom landry was talking about he said you know the rest of the season he said i may very well do that start danny white bring in hoka boom for a while and then go back with danny white that's what we're seeing today but pogoboom was not very effective he was very ineffective danny white only threw two passes before he got hurt completed one of them [Music] fred cornwell the tight end couldn't find the handle i think one thing earlier doug cosby uh was dinged and they said that he he might be back and of course he hasn't come back and i think that is hurting the cowboys passing to some extent i still feel that somehow they have to get the ball to tony hill that's their only touchdown they did get the ball to him one time there's doug cosby he looks a
