today we're getting into the latest tesla news including tesla's huge supercharger expansion another record-breaking quarter more cyber truck prototypes and a new version of the model 3 officially coming out of both factories so let's get into it [Music] first up today this past week tesla released their q3 earnings and had their first earnings call without elon musk present this is a good sign showing how things are trending in a great direction financially so much so that elon doesn't need to be there himself in any case tesla announced profitability once again with a 2 billion gaap operating income and 14.6 operating margin in q3 for cash they listed an operating cash flow less capex of 1.3 billion dollars in q3 with the main highlights of operations being record vehicle production and deliveries and the wider rollout of the full self-driving city streets beta what they're seeing overall is that their cars are getting more and more popular maybe even more than they expected since ev demand continues to truly shift quote ev demand continues to go through a structural shift we believe the more vehicles we have on the road the more tesla owners are able to spread the word about the benefits of evs while fremont factory produced more cars in the last 12 months than in any other year we believe there is room for continued improvement additionally we continue to ramp gigafactory shanghai and build new capacity in texas and berlin their expansion has of course come with issues and roadblocks that will continue into the future a variety of challenges including semiconductor shortages congestion at ports and rolling blackouts have been impacting our ability to keep factories running at full speed they feel that their way of dealing with supply issues is unprecedented in the auto industry and this is especially apparent with how tesla has been able to find multiple types of semiconductor chips for their cars write the software for them and ship them while others have had to halt production at times for details on vehicle production tesla said quote our fremont factory produced over 430 000 vehicles in the last four quarters and we believe there is room for continued improvement model s production continued to ramp successfully in q3 and model x production ramp and first deliveries have begun it's great to hear that the model x production ramp has actually begun since we've been waiting so long for that car and then it's super interesting to see tesla's run rate in fremont at 430 000 over the past four quarters even though they actually list higher in their installed annual capacity elon detailed that giga shanghai has surpassed their fremont run rate and soon two new factories will be up and running for giga texas it sounds a bit behind giga berlin with tesla saying quote gigafactory texas is progressing as planned we are in the process of commissioning equipment and fabricating our first pre-production vehicles whereas giga berlin says factory build out remains on track with testing of equipment well underway we expect to receive final permit approval before the end of this year tesla gave some general updates about vehicle software their app energy storage their safety score rollout and more and then gave some specifics about their new 4680 battery cells saying quote the 4680 in-house cell project continues to progress we are producing an increasing number of battery packs for testing purposes and so far the test results meet our current expectations front and rear body castings both needed for our structural battery pack architecture are being produced at gigafactory texas this is still pretty unclear for timelines but hearing that these batteries do meet their current expectations is great to hear especially after all the impressive claims they unveiled battery day for those batteries one of the biggest things mentioned for these earnings is their plan to achieve 50 average annual growth on the multi-year horizon this relies on a few factors but shows tesla's huge expansion plans are not slowing down anytime soon those are all pretty general updates but one sentence on this document showcases exactly what tesla plans to change on the model 3 going forward in the u.s and multiple cars in other countries right now tesla ships the standard range plus model 3 in the united states and that's their cheapest car in other countries receiving cars made at gigashanghai they offered the standard range model y as well both of these are great options for people who want a great functional car and don't need to pay an extra ten thousand dollars to get the most range possible for me i always thought purchasing a model 3 standard range would be a mistake but after owning one for around seven months it has been an incredible car to own these cars simply use smaller battery packs than long-range vehicles but now tesla is planning an official shift on these vehicles in the earnings report itself under giga shanghai it says quote for standard range vehicles we are shifting to lithium iron phosphate lfp battery chemistry globally this is a bit hidden since it can be taken as they are making lfp batteries for standard range vehicles in china but it specifically says globally typically batteries with this chemistry are less efficient because they offer less energy density but they are also cheaper and safer to use tesla has used this chemistry in china for standard range vehicles briefly introduced some standard range vehicles in the us with it but didn't make it official now they are currently lfp battery cell production is centralized in china but tesla's senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering said quote certainly our goal is to localize all key parts of the vehicles at least on the continent if not closer to where the vehicles are produced so that is our goal and we're working internally and with our suppliers to accomplish and not just at the end assembly level but as far upstream as possible so tesla will keep ordering lfp cells from catl but plans to work on its own lfp cells in the u.s or use a supplier to make them going forward this will mean that the model 3 standard range will switch battery chemistry everywhere and the model y standard range could have a better chance of returning so why does this matter well overall you'll still have a great experience with this different chemistry but a few things do change for one the range will likely drop about 10 miles from 263 miles epa to 253 miles epa that's a slight disadvantage but the rest should be an advantage when commenting on this different battery pack elon musk said quote our intent with this pack is that product experience is roughly equivalent between nickel and iron i'd personally slightly opt for iron pack as it wants to be charged to a hundred percent whereas nickel prefers around 90 some views on this shift outside of tesla say that quote lfp has both positive and negative trade-offs it's significantly cheaper and doesn't require any nickel or cobalt it's also more stable which makes it safer however people do note that cold weather does affect these batteries more meaning that you'll see less range out of this pack compared with a typical one in cold weather definitely a consideration for those living in cold climates but again there are benefits quote lfp batteries are cheaper and safer with this chemistry you can charge your vehicle's battery up to one hundred percent and not worry as much about degradation long term the other thing is these batteries are really easy to recycle and sourcing raw materials for these is easier to do ethically that's why iron based batteries are really the battery of china already and they're all you need for standard range cars with a normal tesla battery pack you really only want to charge to 80 or 90 percent each day tesla even warns you on screen when you try to charge above there to only reserve 100 charges for road trips since it will harm the overall life of the battery pack for daily driving that's typically not an issue but when you're driving a standard range model 3 for example getting an lfp pack will actually give you more range day-to-day for example if epa ratings were accurate you would charge your 263 miles standard range model 3 to a 90 max each day and see about 236.7 miles of an epa range compared with this new pack with an epa range of 253 miles that's fully accessible every day with no harm to the battery it's a pretty interesting difference and another consideration to keep in mind when buying a future tesla for daily driving in a moderate climate it seems this new chemistry could make more sense it also just might be nice to not have to worry about charging percentage in battery longevity i have a friend who recently bought an lfp battery model 3 when tesla briefly sold them in inventory he rents it out on turo and frequently finds that renters have no idea about charging to 80 or 90 percent so for this car it's actually great because they charge to 100 and it's no concern it'll be interesting to see how long it takes for this to become standard but it's a shift tesla plans for globally it does have a couple downsides but a lot of advantages and i personally hope it helps usher in the return of the standard range model y in the u.s next up today we've talked in recent videos about the cyber truck being spotted testing most recently we saw a new version of the truck that appears to have no door handles as elon musk has talked about includes four-wheel steering for very sharp turns again as elon has talked about as well as side mirrors these side mirrors are not something tesla has shown at all or spoken of much but will be legally required for the cyber truck to ship at this point in the us unless something changes dramatically however we've seen that tesla has the cameras in place on the cyber truck to eliminate side mirrors entirely allowing for what should be a superior side camera system and better aerodynamics for performance and range again mirrors would be required though and were spotted testing on the new version of the cyber truck shortly after this video was seen elon musk tweeted to say quote they're required by law but designed to be easy to remove by owners this all but confirms side cameras coming to the cyber truck since they would clearly need some sort of alternate system if the mirrors will be easily removed in any case what hasn't been clear up until now is whether or not tesla is just changing around and modifying the original cyber truck prototype unveiled in 2019 or if they actually are testing multiple new versions of the truck in that recent sighting the dimensions looked quite a bit different with a slightly shorter front-end bumper and longer windshield and on tesla's earnings call they confirmed that they do have multiple cyber trucks in testing this looks like one of those versions of that truck and it's great to see that they have multiple in testing as opposed to just the original one on tesla's earnings call tesla's vice president of vehicle engineering said quote as you may have seen recently in social media we've built a number of alphas and are currently testing those to further mature the design he then went on to say and while those point out a few key additions like rear steering there are also a number of smaller or less visible improvements though the product is largely true to the initial vision we'll continue to work through the product in the beta stages that we're in now and look to launch that by next year the biggest question that will probably only be answered once the cyber truck launches is whether or not tesla decided to shrink its size by three percent as elon musk has mentioned originally he said that they would need to after showing it to jay leno then he said three percent smaller was too small in a tweet however as far as i know the most recent word on it from elon came on joe rogan's podcast where he again mentioned a three percent decrease in size saying quote you know we adjusted the size a few percent like around three percent or smaller you don't want it to be a couple of inches too big for the tunnel these new photos of a new alpha cyber truck seem to be smaller but we'll know for sure with better photos or with the release of the cyber truck hopefully next year next up today a few interesting updates have come out about tesla's full self-driving beta tesla is now pushing the beta to many more customers with the best safety score i tested it out myself and it still has a lot of room for improvement so it's clear why tesla needs customers to truly pay attention 100 percent of the time when using the city streets beta now tesla owners with the beta have been getting notices for autopilot strikeouts saying quote you were receiving this email because telemetry from your vehicle was flagged for improper usage of the fsd beta feature specifically while using the fsd beta feature you or another driver of your vehicle received two or more strikeouts which resulted in the loss of autopilot availability for that drive or at least one strike per five kilometers about three miles driven on autopilot which is a visual and audible warning that requires attention this is your only warning to please keep your hands on the wheel and remain attentive at all times when using autopilot the car is not autonomous and if you aren't paying attention a crash could happen and you or others could get hurt or worse so failure to abide by this warning will result in removal of the fst beta feature from your vehicle they are not playing around when it comes to this beta and it's clear why they are actively using the interior camera when i used it myself i even noticed getting dings to pay attention when simply moving my eyes down to the screen which raises the question as to what tesla plans to do with older cars who bought fsd but don't have an interior camera this would include every model s and x prior to the recent interior refresh maybe tesla will rely on more frequent or aggressive steering wheel input for these cars but either way older cars will reportedly need a camera update in general people started noticing that tesla owners with autopilot 2.0 who paid for full self-driving and got a 100 out of 100 safety score have not received the beta when asked about this and if older cars from 2016 or 2017 will receive fsd elon musk said yeah although early production cars will need camera upgrades as well as fsd computer all included in the price the timeline is unclear on this but it's another retrofit tesla will have to offer for their older cards to receive the full self-driving feature so hopefully it comes soon and doesn't add too much backup to their already strained service centers in any case it appears that they will be replacing the exterior cameras but if they need to replace the three front cameras on the windshield i'm curious if they just install the new assembly with an interior camera on the back side of that as well so that those drivers can have true driver monitoring as well next up today speaking of service when asked on the earnings call about tesla's challenges with backed up service centers around the country tesla acknowledged the issues and said we remain super focused on adding locations and so over the last year we've grown our physical footprint of service centers by 35 percent furthermore when speaking of their ultimate goal for cars just not to need service in general zachary kirkhorn said quote we're also adding staffing as quickly as we can in the areas that are most impacted by the imbalance of supply and demand for service but i think the most important part about all of this and we've said this on calls before where the best service is no service and so we have been incredibly focused as a company both on the initial quality of our vehicles and reliability of our vehicles ultimately that will be the best solution and as i've said before if tesla can truly fix their quality control issues at fremont or by building cars at new factories that will see a significant reduction in necessary service appointments as tesla sells more and more cars though service isn't the only issue the other part is their supercharger network tesla's supercharger network is one of their largest advantages because you have easy charging options all around the country to choose from when driving they're easy to use charge your car fast and are tesla exclusive for now but they are getting more and more crowded tesla is selling cars faster than they're building new chargers so these end up backed up on holiday weekends and many are afraid that it will only get worse especially if tesla goes through with their plans to open up their supercharger network to other evs in the near future well tesla detailed their plans for expansion of superchargers saying quote we are executing on accelerating expansion plans globally the network has doubled in the last 18 months and we are planning to triple it over the next two years hopefully we can see this come to be because if they can truly expand this network that much while continuing to sell hundreds of thousands of cars each quarter and growing it will ensure a great experience for all customers last up today some interesting updates about the rollout of the new tesla model x tesla has finally started first deliveries of that car which hadn't shipped for over nine months after the refresh was announced but it has been confirmed that quote first deliveries of model x long range have begun in the bay area and will expand to all north america locations in the following weeks reportedly tesla plans to only produce six-seater model x configurations to start and customers who ordered five or seven seaters will have to wait tesla has even said that you can ask tesla to modify your order to a six seater keep your original time of order pricing and possibly take delivery faster with director approval regarding specific delivery timeline updates for customers tesla said early to mid q4 2021 we expect to update timing in customer accounts to be more specific they also noted that first deliveries will not deliver with all software features which is common for tesla when they first ship a new car we still haven't seen two main features noise cancelling and aaa gaming or rear screen gaming come to the refreshed model s so hopefully we see those arrive soon in both of these vehicles via over-the-air software updates that's all the latest tesla news for today so in the meantime if you want to see more about the cyber truck and tesla removing configurations you can check out that video linked up here or in the description below thanks so much for watching and i'll see you on the next one
