The winner... ... is Karise Eden! What's your name? My name is Karise Eden, I'm 19. From...
- What?! When I was about 13,
I was self-harming. Stopped going to school,
haven't been to school... ... since I was 12. I spent about two and a half
to three and a half years in refuges. Moving place to place. Growing up I always felt like I've been
very pushed down and shut down... ... and not really worth much. I met auntie Marilyn,
when I was four years old. She's a foster auntie.
She later married Uncle Frank. They're awesome,
they gave me a guitar. I really think,
as cheesy as it sounds... ...you know, I wouldn't have a life,
if it wasn't for them. Music was a major outlet for me. I've never really felt
like I've been heard... Never really seen that... ... I had anything to give. You... you're from outer space. I'm not, really. You know what, you are exactly
what this show is all about. Unbelievable...
unbelievable, man. You swallowed Janis Joplin, I swear.
It was... You know, for the first time... I'm completely lost for words... I actually don't even know
what to say you. Finally! This has not happened. I almost forgot
to press the button, right? You know, you're possessed.
You made some deal with the devil... ... to be able to...
to have that thing come out of you. That's just incredible. If you look behind you,
you'll see that it's called The Voice, right? And I don't think there's been
any bigger testament to that... ...than what we just heard. You are incredible,
God bless you. Seal. Hello! Therese and Paula arrived for
their mentoring session... ...where, with the help of
Ricky Lee Coulter... ... Seal will prepare
the girls for a battle. Okay. Karise, I want to hear that thing that
scares the crap out of me... I want to hear you tame it.
- Okay. Remember the song,
remember the melody. So that when you do go
to that thing that you do... ... you kill people, okay? I actually had a youth worker
that stood there... ... and used to yell at me
and say to me: "I get to go home and guess what?
This is your life... ... and you have to stay here." It was terrific. I thought it really highlighted
both of you, beautifully. It was great,
but from a confidence level... ... and based on
this exact moment... I would have to just
slightly go with you, Karise. Well first of all, I want to say
congratulations to you both. I felt so proud. I was right there,
singing it with both of you. I'm gonna have
to go with Karise. Ladies and gentleman,
the winner of this battle is Karise. For the live rehearsals,
it was all about the taming of that beast. Listen, let me tell you something... If you could just sing in
this softer, more accessible voice... ... with Karise. But I was trying to get her
to be vulnerable. Strength, through vulnerability. And I started welling up with tears. Wow. And it's because she understood
what it was... ... that I was trying to tell her. You've been constantly told... ... that you're not
gonna amount to anything. But I'm telling that you are special. and I'm telling you that
you cannot only win this... ... you can win in life. When I'm walking up onto that stage,
I'll be telling myself "I'm okay." You know?
"So just get out there and do it." Thank you. You got more soul
than a sneaker shop. It's crazy man! I was saving that one for you,
'cause that's a good one. No, it was so good,
I'm such a fan. Congratulations.
- Thank you. Karise has this thing that she does
every time that she sings... And she just brings me to tears
and I'm trying to... I'm sitting up here,
trying to hold it together. Hearing you sing those words
'Nothing real but love'... But that's not entirely true... Because you are so real,
you are so here... You are so now,
you are so in this moment... Congratulations, you are beautiful.
- Thank you. For Karise, I chose Landslide. Karise has paid her dues,
she has gone through some hard stuff... And that is where
that voice comes from. It's a balance between you
using that soft voice that you have... ... and also that power
that you have. That bit always
makes me sad. Can I handle the seasons of my life,
that's the way you choke up. Right? Because it means
something to you. It's written for you. Right now,
this is your song, okay? All right?
- Sweet. I think it makes me choke up,
because... I look at it like it's
the past. Yeah, these things still bother me
in my heart. But I know
I've moved past it. You did really well,
I'm really proud of you. When she learns that
it's okay to be vulnerable... That is when she will sky You know why I got these on?
'Cause you're shining girl. Seriously. They can not... They can not stop your shine. Well done, sweetum. I think that, I think that
you are unique in that.. ... not only of all the people that
I've heard on this show... But of all the people I've hear
in the last 21 years... ... you have something
which is really, really special. Your 50%, is better than
most people's 80%. And I just have to say... The more pressure you have,
the better you're gonna perform. Don't hold back,
do what you do now. Everything that we have
done with Karise... In terms of the tests
that I've put her through... ... this constant me telling her:
"Tame the beast"... ... all of that has been leading up
to this point. Are you crying?
He's crying. Why is he crying?
- I don't know. Why do you think he's crying?
- I don't know. That's what we all live for,
we all live to hear things like that... ... things like that
change people's lives. I seem to make
strong connections... ... with people through
my voice when I sing. It can be a bit of
a weapon at times. This has the potential
to be a flawless performance. A legendary performance.
It's all you from here on out. This dude believes in you so much. And this is the guy... ... who doesn't give up
when he believes. Again, you brought
tears to my eyes. I love you, I love what...
I love what you're doing. I love what you're doing
right now on the show, I love it. And it's so inspiring. I'll wrote this song "I was your girl"
for my mother. It's about what happened
in my life with her. I didn't realize it was
such a ballad in a sence... It's very powerful. I've written a lot of other
empathetic things for my mother. And I do feel for her. But this song is about
where I stand today... ... as a strong
independent young woman. This takes me back to when we
first called you up. I said look, we've got to have one of
your own songs and... ... you said
"I'm not gonna send them." Why is it that you
didn't want to send a song? It's obviously very personal. I don't know if I was ready
to tell everybody about how I feel. Where were you,
when you wrote that song. I was actually
in a positive place. Looking back at a negative
and saying how far I've come. I think it's the most amazing thing
in the world... That you get this opportunity
to sing your song... And to, essentially,
release it. That's a recording artist. Congratulations, welcome. To sing the blues you
have to pay your dues... With Karise,
it's true to that extent. Through her trials and tribulations,
she is able to channel that now. Can you come to the, like, full
snare, but like hit... Just to let her
get into it. Do you like that,
that groove? Writing a song is like expressing feelings
that you can't talk about. I do feel a bit exposed,
having all my feelings in a song. So it's gonna be
quite emotional. Karise Eden! You can cut the line short,
you know. You can go... Try just flattening it out sometimes... Because, again... I can sing that
"I was right and you were wrong..." I'm gonna sing
the "I was right" song. So, I know that you can trust me
with this one. So let's have another crack. In the mentoring session,
what she required from me... ... was to release the
tension in the room... ... by being the court jester. I was right, you were wrong, I get
to sing the "I was right" song. Yes! We're done, we're done. There's nothing to say, except... That you are going to have
a long, long, long career... And I am honored to have watched
the beginning of your career. So, thank you. Honestly, what am I gonna say? What am I gonna say? Anything I'm gonna say,
is gonna...is gonna be second to... ... what you've just witnessed. I mean... ... you are looking at
the new Australian Queen of Soul. She is the voice. The winner... ... is Karise Eden. I'm so happy for you baby. Congratulations to Karise, everyone!
