is this digital mod as good as rgb on a bvm does it mean we no longer need rgb to get the best out of ps 1?

[Music] well you look you know i like putting the tip in just as much as the next oh okay let's just uh hey everybody it's voltar here and you know you probably see the playstation one here and you're thinking jesus baltar christ of latter-day saints how much more could you possibly talk about the playstation one from a modding perspective actually turns out we have a few more things left to say here and here's why the playstation 1 still has a few tricks left up its sleeve and thanks to a very small group of very talented hardware hackers and engineers we have some new toys to play with that are not only amazing they're totally going to change the way we see the system and we interact with the system they're total game changers probably the two most important mods other than the mod ship that have ever come to light for the good old fashioned ps1 now the first thing that we're going to be doing today is we're going to be talking about the ps1 digital now this is from dan koontz and kristoff you may know them on the twaters they're wonderful people and they make some great great hardware this little jewel right here is a digital hdmi video out which is internal it's digital meaning it's not an analog to digital translation it's actually intercepting the video lines and it's actually digitizing the video to oh my god up to 1080p resolution total game changer truly phenomenal i guess you could call this sort of a sibling product to their dc digital which is basically the same thing for the dreamcast truly remarkable now the other little piece of prototyping dev hardware we have is really amazing enter the x station now this is an optical drive emulator that installs internally as it replaces the optical drive in the playstation this is amazing simply because it is nearly flawless in compatibility as a matter of fact it literally beats the pants off of the scio which is sidine's solution for optical drive emulation even though it's really not optical drive emulation and even though they claim like a net of 99 compatibility it's not quite there if your flagship games can't run without error kind of hard to say that at any rate we're going to install these two pieces of kit now most likely this is going to be a two-part video i'm totally full of [ __ ] this is a one-parter now we're going to start with the ps1 digital and we're going to install that start to finish hopefully this can be used as a tutorial for other people who are going to install this kit providing that not a lot changes in the final design now we'll be using a 5500 series playstation that was very generously donated excuse me for the mic ryan ryan schlitzer of castlemania games on the west coast castlemania games is actually one of my favorite vendors because ryan's an honest guy and he means well he's not just in it to make a buck so i really appreciate this ryan thank you he will also do you if the money is right allegedly allegedly allegedly having said all that guys i just want you to sit back strap on let's do it to it [Music] ooh i'm so excited i can hardly stand it okay guys we have our playstation one right here we also have our two kits ps1 digital as well as the x station now as i said earlier we'll be starting with the ps1 digital and dan citrus 3000 psi has some very good but rudimentary instructions on his website that are most likely going to be changing by the time this is released so even though we'll be following along and referencing those keep in mind they may change this is actually made available to the public okay let's get started let's break the playstation one down let's get back to basics let's do it [Music] okay we have access to the board and while we're here let's just go ahead and pull the board out okay ps1's main board is free now we need to remove this soldered in rf shielding an em shielding let's do that right now [Music] and our last tab is buried very deep in there right in the center let's just put a little extra solder on our tip here let's advance it in let's remove this shield let's do it [Music] now our board is free and clear and the next step is to remove the serial port and to make the soldering process a little simpler i'm going to take some fresh solder and i'm going to introduce it to our through-hole joints [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh sweet t-1000 juices it's that simple okay let's go ahead and suck the juices out of our center through-hole pins here and then we'll deal with the corners let's get out our solar sucker and let's do it [Music] beautiful job now to make removing this part a little easier i'm going to take my hot air rework station set it around to around i don't know 330 degrees celsius with around 70 airflow and we're going to reflow these four corners so we can seamlessly remove this port with no fuss no damage and no headache let's do it and it's that simple and it's that fast [Music] a little 91 isopropyl and a q-tip or toothbrush go a long way clean that site beautifully now according to dan's instructions right in here we need to remove this little resistor on the pu 18 board which is exactly what we're working with right here just like that good job guys we're doing well i'm proud of you now according to dan the next step right here the psmi controller flex goes right in to this position let's solder it up let's get it ready [Music] okay guys good work that's the controller port flex cable sorry about that the gosh damn camera was in my way i hope all this came out okay but as you can see our joints look beautiful perfect fillets nice welds beautiful mounds it's time to get to the gpu flex cable according to dan that's the next step so let's get this in position and let's solder that one because it's a lot finer pitched than this bad boy let's go now it's time to install our gpu flex cable and guys this is the part where everyone's probably going to be freaking out it really is where we separate the men from the boys but i want to show you how we can do this we can get through this together and we can install [Music] this nice flex cable that dan designed into position now to start what i'm going to do i'm going to grab my soldering iron and now watch me all i'm going to do is just apply now keep in mind my tip is nice and clean as it is i'm just going to come in here and i am just going to put on the most minut bead of t1000 juices i possibly can and as you can see it's as light as it could possibly be in terms of the coating on the tip so we have our tip prepared i'm going to move that to the side now what we're going to do now is we're going to take our flex cable and we can look at dan's instructions here and we can see precisely where this is supposed to live now i'm looking at this i'm just going to sort of put this in position just like so just like that our alignment looks pretty good i might make a little minor adjustment here give me just a second okay that looks pretty good so now what i'm going to do actually you know what i'm just going to go ahead and flux one side up to get that out of the way and then we'll do our alignment once again the alignment is not a big deal just take your time and what we're going to be focusing on are the pins on the outside edges so i'm looking to the far right way over here on the side and the far left way over on the side now that looks pretty good so i'm going to grab my soldering iron that we've already loaded up with just a small bead of solder okay alignment looks great i'm just going to come in here just like that just like that now our side edge is totally aligned and it's soldered into place now i can look as you can see i can kind of manipulate this a little bit alignment looks great going all the way down so what i'm going to do is just come in here keep this nice and flush as flush as i can [Music] just like that beautiful okay i can let this go and look at that that's all it takes for our alignment we don't have to worry about this we don't have to worry about fighting with this flex cable while we try to maintain our alignment as we solder as long as your edge sides are soldered in with perfect alignment everything in the middle all match up just beautifully and be on pitch okay guys let's do a little drag soldering and let's get this done [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just like that okay guys our pillows look nice good shiny silver soldering fillets here everything looks fantastic it's all done let's keep moving forward okay now our next step is to install our serial ffc cable in place of where we just removed the serial port just want to just add a little flux we're going to do that right now let's do it [Music] [Applause] [Music] all set now it's time to install the ffc cable that's responsible for audio and that's going to live right in here [Music] now we have the main board back into the case and we have all of our ffc cables soldered in and ready to go now at this point i'm just going to put a few things back together so we can quickly test this to make sure our ps1 digital is operating properly and then we'll move on to the x station let's check this out guys that's great the ps1 digital kit is working beautifully tested thoroughly ready to go we can disassemble this because we've got to make room for the x station let's talk a little bit about that now the x station was designed by robert newman who is a critically acclaimed hardware hacker who is known to provide many great contributions to the retro gaming scene now this bad boy will be distributed and sold by ryan of castlemania games i believe he has a link up but it's not set in stone because this is a very early prototype that i have a couple up here to help debug and test with now i'll also be offering services at some point in the united states and 8-bit mods will be offering services for this overseas and places such as europe so they'll be installers and these will be sold at retail anybody can buy one now there are a few caveats to the x station first of all it's only compatible with the select few main board revisions now basically every common playstation one that was produced for the most part will be compatible so there shouldn't be much trouble there and the second caveat is this is not just a simple plug-and-play no this will require some soldering and some pretty tedious hand work we're gonna have to lift some pins and pull a few things out of circuit but it's really not that bad so what are we waiting for let's get to it oh also let me just mention prototype form as it sits nearly yields 100 percent compatibility it's pretty much there and it's being constantly updated and tweaked and it will be continued to be updated and tweaked but out of the gate in my opinion despite the limited playstation 1 support and despite the fact that it requires soldering this is a clear winner over the scio by cybe i think that this is the product you should be looking at as of 2020 when it comes to optical drive emulation even though it's sort of not what this is but we'll just refer to it as a flash card for all intents and purposes having said that we've talked about it it's now time to get into the hot juicy juices let's go now we're looking at our diagram on the screen right now and we can very clearly see what pins that we have to pull off line pull up and remove out a circuit i'll ask this all the time voltar how do you do this with the super fine pitched ics we've got a quad flat pack here the pitch is probably i don't know maybe 0.65 mil on pitch or maybe 0.5 millimeters on pitch pretty thin not a lot of space between these pins what i like to do though is i like to just grab my good old-fashioned often dull exacto knife now the thickness of this blade is perfect and it's ideal because for the most part i can get in and i can leverage between pins no problem so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to take my soldering iron now i'm going to begin right here with pin 80 so i'm just going to heat pin 80 very carefully i'm going to come with my other hand and just advance underneath very carefully we're not using a lot of force here just like that and watch this watch this sweet butter juices it's that gosh damn simple okay not a big deal let's keep going let's isolate the rest of these pins [Music] [Applause] [Music] just like that let me see if i can get this angle just a bit so you can see what's going on here let's have a zoom in a little better there we go now look at that so we've got our pins here 80 and let's see it looks like 78 and 77 80 78 and 77 perfectly isolated from the board very cleanly very non-destructively we're ready to keep going alright let's keep moving [Music] okay guys those are all the pins the hard work's done let's keep going with the x station now i'm going to go ahead and i'm just going to float our qsb in approximate position so i can see all the little vias and all the little places that we need to prep up and clean and remove any lacquer or surface layer from the board so we get a good nice wetted connection here i can clearly see everything that we need to do i can see all the areas we'll be soldering to basically so i'm going to go ahead and prep these you don't need to see me do this you guys get the idea i want to do this i want to solder this in let's go [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay guys looking great so far let's just keep going down the line and be very careful to make sure we still maintain good alignment as we solder in our qsb [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and i'm just going to touch this little pad up one more time [Music] now our qsb is beautifully installed and there's only one thing left to do we need to come all the way over here we just need to remove a resistor out of circuit we just need to attach a little conductor from point a all the way over here to point b after that it's all said and done let's zoom in and let's take care of that now [Music] well there you have it guys i believe that is all the soldering required is installed we've got our line here soldered we've removed our resistor per the install instruction diagram we're ready to keep going let's keep it going let's make it beautiful now there's just one more little bit in the instructions in terms of preparation this little support needs to be removed so let's just go ahead and snip that out quick jiff and in a gosh darn hurry [Music] now we're going to start reassembling this and to begin we just need to feed our flex cable right into the qsp and lock it down [Music] perfect now this isn't exactly going to follow either the ps1 digital or the x stations installation instructions because i've got to put both of these kits back into place we've got to button all this up so we're going to go ahead and we're going to reconstitute the ps1 digital get it in position and we're going to follow back up with the x station let's just button this baby back up and get it going now as you guys can clearly see here we have pretty much everything buttoned back up and this x station is so simple at this point it's just a matter of fitting it on our old cd-rom standoffs and we're basically done now what i'm going to do is i'm just going to bring my cable in here like so and basically just finagle it around here so that it's in the correct orientation [Music] just like this and i i probably want it to live in in in some some orientation very similar similar to this so what i'm going to do we're just going to open the throat up on our flex cable i'm just going to bring this in like so maybe put a fold right about here okay i'm just going to bring this in like so and lock it down just like that and watch this that's it it's really that simple now they are going to include these little standoffs that will help lock the um x station down into position uh a little more securely but you know what for me i don't need these i'm going to discard these but guys that's it that's the x station and oh one more part here here's the hdmi port now look at the ingeniousness of this now this is just dan's um clever noggin really working look at this watch this that's beautiful now when we put the top case on this is going to look like a really nice port nice polish nice finish here i'm excited to put this back together so let's put the top on and let's just see what this is going to look like all right we've got our top positioned here let's just carefully bring it down and line it all up and man look at that does that not look super super clean dan way to go on that that was an excellent excellent move that you made that hdmi port couldn't look any more cherry alright let's take this thing for a spin [Music] resident evil a bizarre incident occurred in the outskirts of an american suburb [Music] uh well guys we're finally done now the playstation one is my favorite system of the fifth generation era even beyond the dreamcast which is kind of hard for me to say sometimes but ultimately the truth is the truth now special thanks goes out to ryan of castlemania games for donating the playstation win that we have here and for being such a good sport once again thanks so much ryan for your support over the years god bless you and your family and a special thanks goes to dan koontz and to kristoff for allowing me the opportunity to do an installation this beautiful little porch whoops right here ps1 digital fantastic probably the best mod that's ever come for the playstation now rama our friend robert across the pond the person responsible for the egg station brilliant work i cannot believe you got all of that functionality out of a low powered esp32 mcu that it's amazing to me that a micro controller like that can be used for optical drive stuff it's crazy now guys if you haven't done it already consider subscribing to my content you know the more of you who do that the more ambition i have to continue on my endeavor of teaching you guys my secret sensual techniques now i hope that you guys consider doing that and at least like the video um if you're interested in using any of the equipment that i like that you see me using every day in in my videos go to my amazon page i'll have a link to that and some other areas where i have affiliate links too thanks again guys so much for staying with me for all these years if you're letting me come into your homes on your wives i mean and to come in and to teach you guys some of these great things that i've spent years perfecting take care of yourselves and each other
