so all you need to do is to go to filter and then neural filters now inside of that you will find this new neural filter called restoration photo restoration let's turn that on make sure enhanced face is checked and there you go magic isn't it now on top of it if you want to color it just check on colorize that's all you're pretty much done now this creates a wonderful just wonderful starting point let's take a look at the before and after so here is the before and here it's the after but wait this feature is not available in the regular versions of photoshop so this is the regular photoshop 2022 updated to the latest version if you go to help about photoshop you would see that at the moment of recording this video this is the latest version if you go to filter neural filters you just won't find photo restoration so how do you get it this feature is available in the latest public beta photoshop among several other features so how do you get that beta so you need to open your creative cloud application the application through which you have installed all of your adobe programs inside of that click on beta apps and then you will find photoshop beta just install it if you're using a captain jack sparrow version of photoshop this may not be a possibility now when you go to filter neural filters you would find the photo restoration filter now there are lots of settings that we can turn on and we can modify but just look at the defaults it is amazing so here is the before and here is the after now if you're using an older version of photoshop like the cs6 or the jack sparrow version and if you want to try this out you can always get a photoshop free trial i'll link that up in the description if you're interested now if you look at the properties of the photo restoration filter some of these sliders look like magic so let's turn it on right here and let's take a look at how fast or slow this is by the way this is processing on device which is good not on the cloud and that was pretty fast now after you've processed it of course this is a flick of a button but even for restoration filter and the default values this was fast now the photo enhancement slider tries to enhance the photo but at the same time it may introduce some softness to the image if we increase it too much we may lose details so we have to find that sweet spot that balance so in this case let us slowly and gradually increase it now as we do it does enhance the photo but if you do it too much it makes it very very soft now i do agree even the face gets better if we take it even more to the right but i would go with something like this that's fine and then you have the enhanced face checkbox which has been creating all the magic so what it's doing is that it's creating a face from scratch on top of the face and trying to align it and trying to adjust it to the original face so if we turn it off you'll be able to understand this is a completely different face so if you turn it on right here have a look this is a different face if you take a look at the eyes and the eyebrows and the lips you'll be able to notice that so this is the original one and this is the created face but even then that my friend is pretty darn close look at it from this distance original face created face pretty darn amazing now to test the scratch reduction slider right here we have an even better image let's jump into it now here we have an image full of scratches so let's turn on the photo restoration filter let's zoom in and let's take a look at the scratch so here is the before here is the after it has done a pretty decent job but i feel that the details are softened too much so let's try and decrease photo enhancement and there you go you get a little more detail so i'm gonna keep it at that and now for the scratches let's turn on scratch reduction now keep in mind this is a little slow it's still processing in the background have a look at it the okay sign is grayed out and there you go it's processed by the way it didn't take very long time so here is the before here is the after now compared to manually removing all of these scratches this is pretty darn fantastic now do keep in mind we need to find a balance right here as well because photoshop cannot distinguish between a scratch right here and the shine of a button or a button so here is the before and here is the after take a look all of those details are gone so it would be great if we had masking option just for scratch reduction but that's not a big deal we can always apply two neural filters one just for scratch reduction and just mask it away that's not a big deal oh here's what you can do take the photo restoration all the way to the left hand side and then maybe increase scratch reduction even more and with a slight better photo enhancement we can mask it later we're gonna get to it later but for right now let's discuss the adjustments now all of these are pretty self-explanatory if you want to reduce the noise you would bring it up now keep in mind it is a little slow not that much but a little slow as you can see it's taking a little while and with the magic of editing this is what you get for 16 noise reduction similarly you have jpeg artifacts production color noise reduction halftone artifacts you can play with these according to the problems you face with your restoration project let's take the noise down and let's output this as a smart filter hit okay back in photoshop and if you turn off the smart filter you would notice that it has taken lots of details away so let's turn it on all we have to do is to go to the mask of the smart filter and then take the brush black as the foreground color take a soft round brush and bring back all of these details right here you can bring back the stick and if this brings back some of the scratches you can always use the spot healing brush tool or the regular healing brush tool and manually do it just for those areas but this filter does most of the heavy lifting for you so before after that is much of an improvement i would bring this detail back there you go done i criticize adobe a lot when it comes to a feature or function that needs improvement and it has recently been the case with many of the neural filters but this time we gotta give big props to adobe for pulling this off where it must be given where credit is due and the results are impressive if not for the final these results can definitely be used as a starting point now before we talk about the limitations of the restoration neural filter please note that this is a beta filter inside of a beta application so even adobe is telling that this is in test mode so unless the final version comes out let's do our best to make it best and how do we do that while using the filter simply give a feedback when you can so if you like the results you would click on yes and then fill out these details if you have the time and click on submit the photoshop team does go through your feedbacks and i can confirm this as some of my friends work at adobe if you don't like the results you would click on no and similarly fill out this form or just click on submit that would also help all right big warning this might give you a little shock look at this adorable young lady if we zoom into the face and now we're going to turn on photo restoration brace yourselves let's do this damn i just want to hear your reaction to this let me know in the comments so that my friend is limitation number one it just changes the face way too much just way too much so this is the original one and this is the created face photoshop has turned this little child into a middle aged woman but the photoshop's defense they have very little details to play with if you look at it and if you place her head on a middle aged woman's body it would be hard to tell whether there are wrinkles or not how the face is structured so that is why this result and at the moment probably ai doesn't recognize the body size and accordingly set the face in what i would have appreciated is photoshop giving several iterations of the face to choose from so right next to enhanced face checkbox if we had a couple buttons to choose between different faces that adobe thinks would fit this face that would be fantastic i think i have an idea what if we try to decrease the facial age using a different neural filter so let's go to filter neural filter again and this time let's turn on smart portrait and decrease facial age now it does process the image in the cloud so this might take a while now this is getting weirder not working much either way it was worth a try let's move on to the next one take a look at this photo looks like a challenging image doesn't it so if you turn on photo restoration right here have a look by default enhanced faces turned off seems a little mysterious doesn't it if you try to turn on enhanced face see what happens it tries to process and then it will give you an error if there's any challenging image that photoshop feels like it cannot do a particular feature on in this case the enhanced face it just would disable it right there please note that all of these tests that we are going through right now are done both on a windows computer and a macbook so it's not that one feature is working on windows the other one is not working on mac or vice versa so at the moment of recording this video it is all uniform by this time you might have noticed that the restoration mostly focuses on the face and it shines when it comes to faces but not so much in the rest of the areas i would have appreciated if it could recreate some of those rest of those areas like the clothes or the hand the hair but even when it is so face focused sometimes it can create weird results due to this take a look at it it did create some of the hair but it did leave out many of those and look at this transition it just looks weird it looks like a man shaved and there's some hair left right here it just a little i don't want to say the word but it just is a little awkward to look at now this video would be incomplete without comparing this filter to its competition now at the moment of recording this video there are two that i had tested in the past one of them was remini we had made a video about it and the other one my heritage as well there's a video about it first of all it's compared to my heritage so all i did was go to myheritage.com photo enhancer inside of that you can upload a photo now keep in mind none of it is free you do get some free conversions in the beginning but do know that there's a limit to it i don't know exactly how much let me know in the comments so i processed this image in my heritage this is the result right here let's compare the photoshop's result and my heritage side by side to do that let's go to window arrange and two up vertical on the left of course we have my heritage we have that watermark right there unless you pay it it won't go but again who are we kidding and on the right we have photoshop's version and even if you look at it from 100 feet distance photoshop wins by and large but if you zoom into the face i feel that the face creation is slightly better just slightly better with my heritage it has brought in a little bit of the beard the eyes look a little more natural and if you compare it with the original photo by the way this is the original photo my heritage website's face is a little closer to the original than photoshop's version so this is photoshop's version now let's compare remini to photoshop now keep in mind remini is a mobile application if you want to use it in your computer you might have to use some kind of an emulator with the recent releases of m1 macbook pros they introduced a feature where you can use ios applications in your macbook if the developer allows but remini doesn't allow so you have to use your phone or use a third-party emulator if you can you need to look into that but as of now if you want to do it you know the clean way the safe way you have to get your photos to your phone process it and then get it back either way i did that process for you and on the left we have the results from remini and on the right we have photoshop's results i used the default values and by and large take a look at the faces it is much better in photoshop here's remini it just creates these weird artifacts right here but if you look at photoshop's results way better just way better now remini does try to create some details and sharpness by creating these halos and you may be a fan of that you may not but if you ask me i don't want that if you look at the teeth again this is weird if you look at photoshop's one even though it might not be that much detailed much better look at the face right here i don't know what that is look at the face photoshop created now photoshop is not perfect i don't know where the nose went right here but you can always bring a new nose but if you look at the overall picture once and for all and treat this as a starting point it's just overall better than remedy if you ask me i feel that the art of restoration is still alive at least at the moment of recording this video i don't know what the future will hold i don't know what ai will come up with with mid journey coming up with the crazy stuff with doll e coming in it's hard to tell but at the moment of recording this video it takes a true artist to create the utmost details from scratch photo restoration is a pure art that takes a lot of skills and this tool i think it's good for casual editing or for creating a base or a foundation for your restoration workflow thank you so much for
