do you like being ripped off by companies if you do then you should go and book a premium economy ticket on a flight so let's explain what i mean by this you will see lots of websites out there some that push credit cards some that push amr some that are frequent flyer vlogs and blogs that say oh maybe you should upgrade to premium economy nine times out of ten the answer is no it is the worst use of your money that you could spend on a plane full stop it's airline's biggest margins so let's have a little history lesson and go back and see why i'm saying this so back in the late 90s 2000s even around 2010 economy class in an airline was maybe eight seats across you had two four two then it became 333 and now largely most airlines have 10 across ct and economy there were even talks from airbus about having 11 seats across on the a380 in economy class what is happening is airlines are reducing what you're getting in economy for essentially the same price if you look at the overall fare with add-ons with bags etc so they're reducing what they're giving you and they're charging you more for a worse seat enter premium economy premium economy came about as something to upgrade from your regular economy experience it's something that people talk about a lot but is premium economy worth it no no no it's not it's just not worth it here's why in premium economy you may get an extra couple of inches of width you get an armrest on the seat an armrest would you really pay that much more for an armrest i personally wouldn't and a foot rest maybe as well you might in some cases be lucky enough to actually get a business class meal who cares it's pre-heated food and business class it's okay it's slightly better than a tim fat wrapped pasta or chicken in economy but it's not worth what is often at least one and a half times the price mostly two times the price of an economy seat for an armrest and a foot rest and a bit of a bigger recline for a couple of inches so the price of business class tickets for example about two and a half maybe three times more than economy however you get four times the space sometimes five times the space of an economy seat if you break it down mathematically in terms of the space you get in premium economy you get about 15 maybe maximum 20 extra space and even that has been very very generous for me but it's usually double the price on super low flights you're looking at double the price of economy is it worth it not from my perspective it really really isn't a slightly better meal priority boarding who really cares you're all going at the same time anyway and you're paying so much more so why do airlines use premium economy a big thing for airlines is it's a buffer between economy and business class and upgrades with miles or cash it puts an extra barrier between us you know a regular peasant being able to get into their prized business class uh it's really not good for passengers it's great for airlines there's a lot of fanfare at the moment in this kind of marketing quite frankly from the likes of emirates that have suddenly introduced premium economy years after the rest of the market and it looks nice i think it looks quite tacky personally with a load of gold on the windows as usual um but there's a big fan fair about it would you go and pay double the price for it for a seat that isn't its economy on steroids and you're paying double i can't reiterate that point enough singapore airlines has a decent premium economy class but still it's expensive you are going to be paying for it my suggestion would be go and find a cheap good value business class fare that you can basically get for double the price of economy you can be finding business class for the same price as you apply in premium economy if you're not necessarily set on that particular route that particular airline and that particular scene if you want to go and connect somewhere you can find a good business class deal instead the large issue is airlines particularly in the u.s have slowly devalued the quality of an economy seat you have the main cabin extra main cabin plus like eco light different fares that devalue the price you are paying for a seat on an airplane [Music] which again means premium economy makes people feel special and it's a big price tag one that you should never ever pay unless in my opinion it's 15 to 20 more of the price of economy sometimes you can upgrade your ticket after you've bought it at check-in or manage my booking online and if it's a slight amount more especially for a long flight it can sometimes be worth it but nine times out of ten premium economy is a non-starter it's not even a discussion that we should be having it's pompous arrogance if anything by airlines by the likes of emirates by the likes of british airways as well because it means you can't turn around and say oh i'll upgrade from economy to business class because you have that that buffer in between it's not worth it and you're going to be paying minimum 50 of the price nine times out of ten for a slightly better meal an extra bag and priority checking uh it's not worth it in my opinion premium economy big no all the time avoid find a cheaper business class fare or stick it out in economy but do not pay one and a half to two times the price a minimum for premium economy happy flying guys
