what equipment do you really need for duck hunting i'm going to answer that and a few other commonly asked questions today i have an incredible opportunity for somebody watching this video and it may be you plus we're going to be doing weekly giveaways for the next two months and i'm gonna tell you all about it plus i got some new merch i'm joel strickland surviving duck season starts right now let's see how much we can get crammed into one video today [Music] thanks for watching survive and duck season where we feed your waterfowl obsession and help you to maximize your experience and i'm really excited about the duck season getting going because i got tons of duck and goose hunts that i'm going to be bringing to you over the next few months plus more great tips and instructional videos for you too so today i've got a hodgepodge of different things i'm going to be talking about including answering some of your most commonly asked questions so let's start knocking some of them out right now first is the big one what equipment do i really need to duck hunt i get guys asking uh this all the time both brand new hunters and even guys who've been hunting for a while you know there's so much available out there and we're bombarded with advertisements all the time it's really hard to know what's needed and what's helpful in duck hunting it really depends on where you hunt and the way that you hunt but i'm going to try to make it as simple as i can so here's the list decoys call shotgun and shells waders if you hunt around water maybe a boat kayak or canoe that's pretty much the main stuff i mean obviously you know there's clothes and i'm not going to get into all that stuff and you know flashlight and pocketknife or whatever but you know i think the main question that most guys are really wanting to know is like how many decoys do i need and what about the motion devices that's really the the main things that most guys are wanting to know now i've heard it said lots of times you know a dozen decoys and a jerk rig is all you need you know if you're in the right place it doesn't take anything but a few decoys well yeah that's true but it's not very helpful information especially for a new guy that doesn't have any experience so as you can imagine i disagree with that statement i've shot ducks plenty of times with no decoys at all or six decoys or even just a dozen but that's just not the normal thing to be able to do everywhere all the time you want to position yourself to be the most effective in as many scenarios as possible and one dozen decoys is not going to get it done guys i mean that's just the reality most places it won't so here's what i'm going to do i'm going to paint a very broad stroke for you to kind of encompass the most amount of people as possible okay definitely not every single circumstance in every single place but generally speaking most guys can get away with using three dozen decoys most of the time a jerk rig definitely in most places that's going to be a very very effective tool you can definitely make one yourself check out my video where i talk about it right there now you don't have to use power decoys motion devices and that kind of stuff but they do work at certain times if you can afford a spinner or rippler you know something like that it can definitely give you an advantage on some days i use spinners and many other devices and have regular success with them throughout the season in most places that i hunt does it work in every single place every day no nothing does that but it works enough that i believe in them and i still use them they're definitely not a magic bullet though they are tools that should be used the right way technology is not a substitution for skill did you hear what i said technology devices and products are not a substitution for skill or experience they're an aid to be used in the right hands in the right way all right so before i move on to the next question i want to tell y'all about the weekly giveaways that i'm going to be doing over the next couple of months now every week i'll be giving away some pretty cool things like surviving duck season merch waders and some other products that you're really gonna love and in order to participate you need to go to my website and register survivingduckseason.com that way i'll know how to get a hold of you if you win and that way i also know how to send you the product so here's how it's all gonna work you gotta watch the videos so make sure that you're subscribed to this channel and click that bell notification we'll be doing a giveaway once a week uh some weeks i'm going to have more than one video but i'm only going to do a giveaway you know once per week you know on one video so somewhere on that video i'm going to tell you the kind of comment that i'm looking for for you to be able to participate in the giveaway now this is important you need to have that bell notification selected both on your app and on your device because you're only going to have 24 hours from the time that the video drops before i do the giveaway so watch the video within 24 hours make the right kind of comment and be sure you're registered there you go and yes i want to do a giveaway on this video too so keep watching all right now back to the frequently asked questions one big one that i've gotten quite a few times people asking me about the camera gear that i use what kind of cameras do you use well i work in the film and television production business i have a lot of cameras and i also rent a lot of gear from time to time for the different productions that i do the footage that you see on my videos are shot on all types of different cameras sony fs7 a couple of different red cameras a panasonic varicam and several broadcast cameras great big ones plus i also have some action and pov cameras and a drone in the last year i've also rented some of the mirrorless cameras from canon sony and blackmagic oh and i also have a little sony ax 53 that i use for my vlogging camera so got a lot of cameras cameras are tools to me each one of them fits a specific circumstance or a certain type of production that i'm doing and guys ask me all the time for suggestions on what kind of gear they should buy to shoot video of their hunts and my my answer is always it depends it depends on how you're going to use it that sort of thing you know just like in your toolbox you can use all kinds of tools for different things you can take a great big heavy wrench or something like that and pound a nail in with it it kind of works but a hammer is better you get the idea same thing with cameras now i'm considering creating some content in the future about how you can video your own hunts uh give you some suggestions on gear that you can purchase that kind of thing if that's something that y'all would be interested in seeing please let me know in the comments below now here is a great opportunity for a very specific person my production business and this youtube channel are really thriving and throughout my career i've always enjoyed bringing on guys who have a passion and want some real experience at a high level in production it's very rewarding to me to be able to pour into these guys and help them to reach their potential i've trained a whole bunch of guys who've gone on uh to be producers of television shows and be full-time editors camera operators and even a few have their own production companies and become very very successful so if you are highly creative you're into film and video production you've worked with a camera and video editing and you'd like to make a career out of it and if you love duck hunting too that's important then i have some internships available and for the right guys it could turn into a full-time employment opportunity with me as well so if that's you or if you know someone who may be interested go to my website survivingduckseason.com and check out the page on internship opportunities and there you can find out how to apply let's do a giveaway alright i have a brand new surviving duck season exclusive couple months ago on this channel the one he was talking about about the biggest mystery in waterfowl history if you missed it make sure you check it out but we did it during the covid shutdown with the crew of three it was partially shot inside my house and then the rest was done on a chroma key set it was a whole lot of fun okay texas rigs i know about texas rigs no problem no problem no problem no problem no problem higher no problem that's what i want you to do no problem all right try it again and action texas wigs i know about texas rigs no problem that was it finally let's roll on it this time speaking of parodies over the years i've done some funny parody music videos that i made with a buddy of mine kevin blake weldon under his label funny hunting songs they've got
