[Music] [Applause] [Music] alrighty so can everybody see right here yes yes awesome okay i can't hear you all as well so if i do you know if i kind of lean in it's because i'm just trying to make sure i hear you so i have my strip sets cut and i've laid them out for the blue one in the order in which they're gonna go together okay so i have my tent stripe my solid my wildflower and my mineral at the bottom okay and i just want to tell you my other tools that i have today so you can see i have my seam ripper my favorite bowen seam ripper because inevitably i'm going to need to rip something out because it's just a way of life i have my glass head pins stephanie is loaning me her clapper which i'm super excited about especially because we're going to have so many um scenes way more than we had in last month's blocks so i have my clapper i have my super sidekick because that's what i'm going to use to to cut my um triangles and my half hexagons and then i have my teeny teeny tiny um 18 millimeter rotary cutter because it fit into my bag a little bit easier than my big one all right so if everybody wants to get out their instructions for month two just so we're all on the same page and if you have any questions you have it right in front of you okay so i've i've laid out my strips just the way we have it here a b c and d okay and even if you don't if the color doesn't sort of work for you just read the name and that usually is helpful for me to figure out what they're talking about okay we're going to make two different strip sets per block the first one is going to be a and b and the second one is going to be c and d and so a and b is actually sewn together b and a so we're going to have our solid on top and the bottom one actually is c and d so we'll have our wildflowers on top so we're just going to go ahead and make two strip sets per grouping scant quarter inch okay so just right inside your quarter inch line on your machine just like a threads width and you want to go ahead and make all those strip sets and then we're going to come back and press them and and make sure we're on the right track any questions so far so today i know i told everyone to use the same machine throughout but since i get since i'm not working in a bernina store anymore i get to use a new machine when i come here so i today i'm sewing on the 535 which still has the the big bobbin um but it's a little bit shorter throat plate i have my um straight stitch plate on here because i still really like that 37 foot which is a quarter inch and i'm using the same oreo fill that i have stayed the same with i have the same spool i used last month this thing smells so like butter i love it and and everybody's so at your own pace i'm a little bit of a speed demon but you do what feels right to you and i'm a chain piecer so i'm just i'm not going to cut my thread until i've gotten all four of these strip sets um sewn all right ladies i'm on my last trip and then we can do some fancy pressing all right i've got all my little good i'm just going to cut these apart i remembered my scissors this time much better so last month i talked about the two schools of thought about ironing they're those people that like to press their seams you know flat just the way it came out of the sewing machine and then before we press it open and then those people that just you know open up their seams and go there's no in my humble opinion no right or wrong way to do this you know people making quilts for hundreds and hundreds of years and i guarantee you that many of them did not use an iron so i pressed it flat just pressed right the way it came out of my sewing machine and now i'm going to open up these seams and i'm going to go ahead and i'm just using that nose of my iron to press that seam open and then i'm going to put the clapper right on top of it some of the seams that may have cooled down i'm just going to go back over them and i'm also using the wool pressing cloth we all have our little preferences don't we yeah okay so there's that one seam pressed open and straight and so we're going to go ahead and do all four or if you're really ambitious and you're doing both blocks at the same time go ahead and do all eight of your strip sets just go ahead and press them and make sure that seam is is open and nice and flat so we have both of our strip sets right i have b and a and then c and d and we are going to be cutting from each strip set two half hexagons and two triangles okay i know that probably sounds like madness but and i am using the super sidekick i know it's hard to see hold on one second this one has paper underneath it so i'm using the super sidekick and if you'll see you know one edge one side is actually a triangle and so that's what i'm going to be using to cut my shapes today she um has you use i think the side kick and the hexamore just the hexamore but i'm using the super sidekick you can use whichever one you you would like okay so got my my dark solid which is fabric b on top and the first thing that we're gonna do is do our half hexagon hold on and get myself situated here and so the half hexagon should be six and a half inches okay meaning that i'm going to line it up on the six and a half inch mark at the bottom okay and i haven't trimmed the other side yet but i'll i'll get there i just want you all to be able to see it grab my itty bitty ruler here i mean rotary cutter okay so we're just gonna move that piece out of the way and now i'm gonna flip this over and i'm gonna flip my ruler over and i'm gonna trim this other side no that is not the way your rule book will tell you how to cut it but i but i just wanted you all to see so that we're not flipping this um strip set any more than we have to so the one that you made that cut was the first cut was the ruler upside down yes so the ruler's upside down and so now my next cut i'm going to so when i cut first all everything was backwards right it was it was um i'm on the back side of the ruler so everything is backwards um and this time i'm going to flip it so that i can read everything and i am going to place this at the edge of the three and a half inch triangle so i'm using the opposite end of this larger triangle for this part and now we're gonna be able to just flip the ruler up and down okay and our line on my left hand side it should line up perfectly with the shape you've just cut previously okay and you will notice that now the stripe is on the top of your shape whereas before it was on the bottom and that's what we want that's what we're looking for so i'm going to flip it upside down again i'm going to put it on my six and a half inch line what are you putting on your six and a half so my my bottom seam my bottom line the very bottom of my shape is on the six and a half okay i've got three more to cut so don't worry if if you're lost at this very moment i'll get you okay and then i'm gonna flip it and so now my very top edge this dark blue or blurple kind of color is on the three and a half inch and in your directions it tells you you're cutting a six and a half inch half hexagon and a three and a half inch triangle and that's what that means and i've got a little extra um that would be enough to cut no it won't be but you could save that because you might want it for something you might need those these little strips for something i've not thrown away any of my scraps from the first one okay so now we're gonna do our second our c and d so i have my wildflowers on top which is like my favorite fabric out of this quilt i think and then the minerals on the bottom okay if we were following directions properly i would flip that around and i would go ahead right now i have it set with like i was going to cut a triangle with a three and a half inch line at top i'm going to go ahead and cut that and all of this is in the cutting directions in your booklet okay so now i'm upside down i'm on my six and a half inch line down here at the bottom of the minerals and i'm gonna cut oh see this is why we have longer seams okay so now this is my shape i'm gonna put these next to each other so you can see them and well give me a little bit of a bit but we'll see how much it matters right side up three and a half inch line okay so i had like a little cutting mishap these things happen so i'm going to need to straighten out this other edge there we go so that's our first triangle in our first half hexagon with no here we go all right so upside down six and a half right side up three and a half that's like your little mantra through these four strip sets and your biggest goal is to think about which strip is on the top when you start okay so for the first strip set your b and a you want that solid on the top and if you're doing the orange one you want your the pom-poms the marigold pom-poms on the top and on your second strip set with the wildflowers and the minerals we actually want the wildflowers on top and if you're doing the orange one that's going to be the opposite pom-pom the begonia can you start and show one strip from beginning again sure of course okay so i'm gonna do another um b and a so if you're doing blue we've got our solid on the top and our tent stripe on the bottom i'm just gonna cut my last strip i've got my this one is the wildflowers and the mineral and your first cut is always the the six and a half that that half hexi but when you do the flip you use the three and a half to start with right yes ma'am i did use a three and a half to start yep ju just to get that angle okay okay and if for some reason your your strip set is not three and a half inches wide you'll know it immediately because that line will not line up at the very top like like we're hoping for okay yeah i see where my confusion was i was looking at the six and a half at the bottom of the ruler instead of up oh yes yeah no i there's a lot of lines on these rulers for sure that that's why i was trying to find where your six and a half is but now i understand i'm watching what you're doing and i i i now understand no problem okay so we're going to swap out our group b and a triangles with our c and d triangles so that now we have hold on let me get all my mess out of your way so now we're going to have these two sets okay so this side is going to go a b c d and this side's going to go d c a b and the these are the two triangles that we're making okay any questions so i'm going to take this first set and i'm going to lay my triangle right on top let me see if you guys can see right on top and i am leaving dog ears can you see that on each end i've got a little dark purple sticking out and they should be a quarter of an inch sticking out can you see that yep yep julie you with me yeah okay yeah i'm still trying to cut so no no no you take your time take your time and and also the other key is that my center seams on those strip sets i can feel them they line right up which is which is what we're hoping for and i i promise you that your fourth strip set that you sewed is gonna look better than your first one and your second block is gonna look better than the first one because you will have learned all the things not to do or how exactly to line it up on your machine just like your blocks of month nine are going to be amazing compared to your block um month one blocks because you just have learned the trick tricks and the tips and how to use the rulers okay all right so i'm going to start sewing down and i start with my needle down so that i can put it right in that intersection and make sure that i really am a quarter of an inch that my dog here really is a quarter of an inch over that make sense to everybody now i'm starting on my second set so you should end up with eight triangles four of each combination and again we're not cutting off our dog ears we want them for future placement what color thread are you using i'm using or fill 2600 it's a light gray okay that's what i'm guessing so i'm gonna you know we're gonna we need these seams to be flat as well or pressed open so i'm just gonna go ahead and and press these and get them open so that we can get to the most exciting part and this is a little bit tricky to get into that center you know we've already pressed these two seams so trying to get in the middle here i try to let my iron lay over two you know so i'm not just trying to get in the middle and not touch either one of those i'm just going to go ahead and purposefully you know press two two seams and then i'm gonna press it right from the front as well so that is what hold on let me get in camera that is what we're looking for and if you've by any miracle sewn everything i use the word perfectly in quotations because none of us are perfect you get this nice continuous line that you could line up your ruler on i'm only showing you that one because it's beautiful i can't promise the other seven will look as good but i will say this machine is amazing and now i'm not in the market for yet another bernina but this one's pretty sweet i want to come say hi come say hi sona wants to say hi hold on she's coming over [Music] hi guys oh my gosh pollen i see your beautiful dog background yes that's my dog yes she's maya maya well i got through i have to say i'm part of this group i'm not sewing with you guys today but i do have to say that i did finish my month two blocks wow that's great yeah so now i gotta um get busy with month three but um it's so much fun i love the colors hey judith good to see you again two days in a row yes that's true that is true all right guys i just wanted to pop in and say hi hi have an awesome time sewing well bye all right so i'm done with all four of one set here we go with our second set these are looking pretty nice i don't i don't think my first set my first block looked this good okay now we're at the fun part not that we haven't had fun so far but we're gonna start putting this block together so definitely use the diagram just to remind yourself and even though most of it is in the blue colorway you can see at the bottom she has shown you the layout for that kind of dreamsicle orange version as well okay and we're going to end up with a lot of scenes the the one thing i wanted to mention today as i was looking at my blocks on the wall is that these these blocks as you go through all the months they either have a seam that goes kind of diagonal like this one does you know where you're kind of making the top row and the bottom row or they're cut right in half making two triangles those are sort of our two uh final assembly methods and this one is that horizontal with a top row and a bottom row okay so when all else fails i love it when there's a solid in these blocks because i can always pinpoint on my instructions where i'm supposed to be if i just use one fabric as my guide instead of trying to figure out everything else if we've done everything else right in the first part if you just pick one fabric it could be the teal it could be you know the yellowish um in the orange version it'll help you realize where everything's supposed to go so i'm gonna lay just the top version out of this for you okay and they are really all going all sorts of ways if we take the stripe this tent stripe as our guide we've got one at the top one at the bottom one at the top one at the bottom hold on let me get oh no it's you're good you're good it's me hold on hold on ladies i know it is better than last month but okay can everybody see that yeah how we've got our alternating there so nothing is lining up with its match which is what we want okay so you know cut twice so one i mean measure twice cut once we're gonna lay out twice and only sew it once that's our goal right i brought the seam ripper so maybe we don't have to pick anything out today so i'm not going to sew these one after the other i'm actually going to sew these two together and i'm going to sew these two together and then i will come back and do this connecting diagonal okay in my world i would just sew them all together in a line but for pressing purposes it just is easier just go ahead and do them by unit i promise you you'll be happier that way and i'm just doing the top portion of this right now now i will say because we are putting these bias edges together right here on this one when i lay them on top of each other everything should match up my tip should match up my seams should match up this is where we're gonna use our pins and my bottom you know blunted edge should match up all of those should line up in a nice little line and if they don't we're gonna gently remember this is our biased edge we're going to gently get everybody into the right border okay and for me each block i make is not about perfection but just sewing the best block i can on that day because because we are we do have all these biased edges the less we have to unpick the better and i like to sew right up until i get to my pin so that i make sure that my needle is down into one edge of the seam and is holding that steady for me so my top and bottom didn't line up correctly let me see so when i press it can you see that yep just a little bit off what does the other side look like julie well that side looks gorgeous so should i undo it or not nope well i would not undo it is it going to make you unhappy well i'll just have a smaller seam on on one side right for part of it not a smaller scene but just line up the edges of the the two and the bottom the one on the top and then that that one will be a little bit bigger this one will be a little bit bigger yeah yeah okay okay thank you and then my second set because these are actually going what i would say butt to butt you know long solid seams together i'm just flipping them right sides together and i'm just gonna match up that top edge and the bottom edge matches really nicely and i'm just sewing that seam i'm not gonna pin you can pin to your heart's content um i'm just i'm not a big pinner all righty we're getting there ladies we're getting there i know you can't see them but i have spectators in the sewing room with me today they're making sure that i'm not lying to you ladies getting everything right okay so these seams are also going to be another place where you're going to end up overlapping probably several seams as you press so do that intentionally you know go ahead and and use that to your advantage and i am pressing from the top as well okay so here we go i've got my two units here and now i'm going to sew them on this diagonal now you've got all kinds of ways to mark these blocks and make sure they line up so on the bottom edge i'm lining that cut off triangle with the very bottom edge and it just snugs right in there and then remember i said don't cut off your dog ear so on this top edge i don't know if you can see that i'm lining up the bottom triangle with that little dog ear and they are snugging right in there beautifully and as i wait make my way down these these diagonal seams should line up as best you can and you may have to gently you know talk to them nicely ask them to you know scooch a little bit to the right or the left and know that it will you know ease itself in at your machine so i'm sewing this seam right here and you can see you know we have all of our seams open ready to go if you like to use steam use your steam if you'd rather use a best press or a starch knock yourself out i don't know if you guys can see this but where these little these seams line up they make a little point and as well as those points line up usually corresponds to how nicely these little seams line up here okay stephanie wants to see my beautiful points here now i'm telling you i'm pretty sure the one on the wall does not look this fantastic so that's why i'm showing it off to you ladies i'm very proud okay all right so now that's the top half and now we're going to do our bottom half okay there we go making sure so i have my stripe at the tip that's pointing this direction to my left down here little spaceship stripe at the bottom stripe at the top stripe at the bottom okay and again i'm going to be sewing these two units so again i'm going to have one seam that is just the bottom these nice straight edges no bias just lovely and then this one we're going to be sewing this bias edge together but again we have these all these lovely points that we can match up to make sure everything's lined up okay so my first one i'm not going to pin only because that's my preference and these are all lovely checkpoints does it line up is something bigger than the other i'm really only showing these to you because they're lining up beautifully but as if you were here last month you know i will show you my my ugly things too i'm equal opportunity okay now i'm gonna do this nice diagonal and i'm gonna pin all these sweet intersections just to remind them to behave and if anyone cares which you may not which is totally fine i usually put my pin in the bottom um half of that seam i put this one in the top just because um and i do that so that i can get my needle to stop in the down position on the top and hold that inner section together while i take the pin out and continue going down a lot of people like to pin the that top half just so that you know it's not going to shift in the first place but i really like to get my needle into that top position and since it's not my machine i can't sew over these pins i'm going to press these open same thing we're going to press these open and seam our two units together to make the bottom half of this block so here we go this is my these are my bottom two units and i'm just gonna flip those right sides together and again i've got lots of nice points to make sure everything lines up the top blunted edge of that triangle goes right against that seam and my bottom triangle is going to go right into that dog ear that's underneath it and then i've got my three seams in between and i will pin i promise my gosh we're almost to our final seam my mat is trying to run away from me here i'm going to press the seam open and give it a nice press from the front as well before we sew this next really long seam i'm also going to clip any thread straight threads that might be hanging out i'm not usually very good about that but these will catch up with you okay so here we have the top unit and our bottom unit and they are going to meet you can see that one end is going to hang off on the bottom and one end is going to hang off at the top so they're slightly askew but what we should have in the middle is this hexagon so three of each of the mineral and the tent stripe right here in the center okay i'm just going to flip it over i'm actually going to pin the middle first because we do actually really want that to be as lovely as possible and to lay as flat as possible and i've put a pin straight through at the quarter inch space at the top of that mineral triangle i don't know if you can see my pin it's right there just right in there perpendicular and i'm going to take that pin first of all i'm going to get it really straight i'm going to take that pin and put it right into this intersection here right there where that tent stripe intersects with these two minerals right at that top so now i have that pin holding it together and i'm just gonna you know talk to it wiggle it around a little bit until i feel like it's lined up nicely and once it's lined up i'm going to leave that pin in there and come and pin on either side and then i can pull that pin out and now i can make my way to each end and pin these seams which should line up nicely and if not you know do the best you can to get them to behave and on the very end i have a dog ear that i'm going to line up with the point of that that top line and i'm going to do the exact same thing on the other side and you can put as many pins here as you need to to feel like everything is secure and lined up and you feel confident about sewing it i mean that could be three pins that could be 20 pins um but there's no judgment on that for sure and then on this this final right hand edge i've got a dog here on top and a nice triangle corner on the bottom all right so we've got this long seam it's our final seam um and i'm going to go slowly maybe i should say slower and try to make sure that everything is staying nice and flat and that we're when i get to that intersection in the center that i hit it as close on as i can i'm also trying to make sure that my seams stay open as i'm sewing over them you can you know put your finger underneath the bottom and make sure you lay that all flat before you come up on the seam okay now i'm at my center i'm just gonna creep slowly so i can take my pins out and we won't really know how that turned out until we're done with this scene let's see how'd we do friends oh we did pretty well it's not perfect but i'm not here for perfection so that to me is is good i've got six points that meet there's no extra seam allowance in there nobody got cut off you know everybody got to show their most beautiful self and it will look even crisper once it's pressed open but that that's sort of your focus if you can get this and your two ends to be nice and even it's a win so i'm going to press this and try to get everybody nice and flat and then i'm going to press this open and again in this final scene just be mindful that you're making sure that all your other scenes that we've done previously are also still open and as flat as possible okay oh yeah there we go so again this this is one of those blocks where our final seam is this kind of diagonal whereas the um next month's block the final seam is right here in the center all right questions does anybody else yeah paula has a blog nice job let me turn it off that background okay now yes beautiful nice job well thank you i love it i love it anybody else julie you got a block for us yet now i'm playing with jack okay okay i've got blocks chances oh that's beautiful that center is perfection yes yes you've got both yeah i had uh i had cut all my fabric the second time before prepared she
