this is an swx sports presentation the university of montana grizzlies take on the central washington university wildcats sws college football starts right now 465 days 68 weeks 11 640 hours since the grizzlies wrapped up to play football and they're off and running today hey everybody welcome to washington grizzly stadium ron davis grady better hanging out with you here at washington grizz and we're ready for some football on a day that it feels like football with snowflakes coming down to missoula and grady we're ready to get back underway but after all that time off there's been some changes and for the grizzlies the main change at quarterback well of course it all starts at the quarterback position and you know cam humphrey has some big shoes to fill with the great galton snead leaving but what grizzly quarterback in this long lineage of great players hasn't had big shoes to fill right so the key for cam is just simply to be himself and he proved that he can do that he went three-and-oh and replacing dalton a couple years ago and so the kiefer cam is simply to be the best cam humphrey that he can be and the good news is he's behind a much bigger much improved offensive line which is going to help a lot well and for the washington central washington team they come in expecting their offense to roll because of a running back who because of the long offseason is no longer with the team as of three days ago you know ron this is a great example of exactly what this game typifies here's a great example of what we're going to see really all day and all spring with all these games being played around the country michael rood's an all-american he's the feature guy right you see him on your tv screen and what he did last year enters the transfer protocol three days ago you think that's going to change today's game yes for sure well he was our impact player for them and he's gone but both these teams really don't know what to expect it's been lab time for these coaches and as a coach with all that time off what were you working on what did you do with all that extra time you know you said it ron 485 days as football coaches in the off season it's a fun time to experiment to play with things we go to clinics we watch who's been successful at all levels nfl college in high school and we put in new schemes we look at what might work coach how can his staff well both of these staffs have had 485 days to play with a lot of stuff that's a lot of lab time so it's going to be interesting to see what both fans get to see of their teams it might be a totally different look today well and that's tough planning and getting ready and watching film example the grizzly coaching staff had to go watch high school film for the starting quarterback for central washington because there's no film on it it's exciting hey we're not done here we have another member of our broadcast team sean rainey joins us on the field with details about today's game thanks guys it has been 485 days since we've had grizz football here inside washington grizzly stadium and boy are we excited for kickoff here today this one it obviously is a spring game but this one counts okay let's not get it twisted all these stats count for the record books and when i asked coach half about his approach for this game and maybe like a normal spring game when you're trying to play depth and get a whole bunch of players some reps he goes sean that's a dumb question they're keeping score we're going to try and beat him as bad as we possibly can like any other opponent in any other game so guys this spring game it's a regular game in coach halk's eyes so it's going to be a lot of fun don't go anywhere because we got kick out between the montana grizzlies and the natural washington wildcats for the first time in almost 17 months coming up after the [Music] break [Music] [Music] [Music] and welcome back to washington grizzly stadiums we get ready for football saturday here on swx rendezvous grady bennett in the booth with you and grady we looked down in the stands not used to seeing washington so empty but the 5 000 or so that are here are going to have to get real loud to help the grizzlies today against central washington and both teams out a lot of the tradition we're used to we didn't get to see yeah ron i'm really interested to see how these players and i'm sure once this game kicks off man it's competition they've been waiting so long they're going to play hard you know you really when you're competing you don't notice the crowd anyways however you do in the sense that the energy of this place you think about the tunnel wasn't up the cheerleaders aren't on the field money is not out here the skydivers aren't coming down and you wondered what 5000 was going to look like well it looks pretty empty it's like half time out there so the energy is definitely different but boy it's time to play some football finally so where were you 485 days ago where were you the last time the grizzlies played do you remember most people do i was at a wedding in texas you were driving home from officiating a basketball game yeah here we are yeah that's right it's been so long and it is interesting to think about when's the last time we got to watch the grizzlies play football that's what's so exciting for all the fans across the state across the country griz nation finally time to tee it up here we go the wait is over the montana grizzlies will get the ball to start this first game of the spring season against the wildcats as salsa is back with flowers waiting the kick as we're ready to get underway here at washington grizzly stadium the wait is over and it's time to hunt flowers will get the kick at about the five for the grizzlies flowers finding room could he take it to the house as he's going to be brought down here midfield great return by the grizzly special teams great execution i'm surprised that they kicked to malik flowers right out of the gate excellent returner his his story is so good but they gave it to him and he made him pay well he had some great blocking up front and this was an area grady that coach was worried about special teams yeah you know that might be he said might be the the area of this game that's going to be the most interesting because you haven't had the reps that you normally have it's been so inconsistent with compared to offense and defense so we'll see on special teams today but here comes cam humphrey the uh the starting at quarterback replacing the great dalton snead and time for cam to do his thing well cam did a great job filling in going 3-0 in 2019 and they'll go right to the air with cam as he goes underneath and finds a wide open nick osmo starting at tailback and osmo gets eight quick for the grizzlies obviously fans will wonder where marcus knight is and like a lot of players you know marcus is a little bit dinged up won't play today but there's a lot of players because of this time off that have actually taken care of some injuries and so there's some guys that you're not going to see today because they've been getting fixed up health-wise tim will pull it back out osmo's belly and dive ahead for the first down on a gain of three for the montana grizzlies let's go to that front line as we watch them move that whole defense back there's a this is a group that was the weakest part of the grizzlies when bobby came in and right now they're excited about this senior laden offensive line well as we keep stressing the amount of time that the grizzlies have had since they've last played this group may have benefited the most of any group the fact this offensive line as you said was much maligned undersized kind of a grab bag well they've had a chance to get bigger to get more experience and coach halk's really excited now about that front five well christopher penny jumps across the line so the grizzlies will pick up five on encroachment so to be a first down inside the 30. and boy what what a feeling though feels like it feels like football out here snowflakes coming down it's cold and the only thing we're missing is all the grizz crazies yeah you're right it does feel like a fall football game you really couldn't have ordered better weather i know everybody wants it to be sunny and beautiful spring day but this is football weather right here going to the end zone for the grizzlies as they get in the corner great breakup down there on defense for the wildcats coming out and making a great job of stopping it down there is number 15 james henson but that one had touchdown written all over it [Music] well you see roberts almost gets here we got a offensive pass in her interference against the grizzlies yeah they caught on the underneath route they called kind of a pick on samia kim and it was tough to see there in the replay you could see sammy kim sitting down underneath picking for the outside receiver which that wasn't the focus obviously the ball went deep but that really sets the grizzlies a long way back so here's a little adversity on the first drive at first and 20 coming up now so the grizz looking at first and long for the first time this season again the defense going to be offsides we'll get a free play as osmo will dive over the right side over the 40 and down into about the 38-yard line well he picked up six so coach hauck will probably accept this to make it first in 15 rather than second and 14 obviously so and that's exactly what they're going to do as a coach you had that one already figured out didn't you yeah first and 15 obviously a lot better than second and 14 but you know that first down run of six ron is going to be a key to watch all day with this with this improved offensive line you see a transfer center aj forbes up front is gonna really help in the middle there but boy if they can get good first down yardage it's gonna be a real key for them this season why wide open over here on the near sideline is samia kim and he gets a great jump ahead down inside the 30 to about the 28 and he was wide open blown coverage well and that's just cam kind of staying with can staying with the the short game you can see his numbers right there he's been very effective again he's a different player than dalton sneed so i know it's been a while but uh folks remember he was three and oh and he's not gonna be dalton sneed and he doesn't have to be because he has nick osmond the ball off to an osmo rambles down to a first down inside the 15 down at the 12 yard line as osmo with a great run and he's going to be pulled down by max randall down there but what a great run by this young running back well good job by the left tackle conlan beaver one of the leaders up front pre-season all big sky all-american type pick and he does a good job on that wide zone play just opening up a nice hole for nick on the young man from portland oregon got a few carries last year but they all were excited to see what he was capable of doing rolling out and finding the big tight end and then missing the ball down there as they had bryce and demi but off the back shoulder pad well i thought cam maybe made the wrong read right there they had the outside linebacker in a little bit of a pickle having to make a decision and he made the decision on the tight end i thought the ball should have went outside but you know cam's got to settle down and just go through his progressions and make the right reads the grizzlies down in that red zone looking to put something in here to start this spring game and this is a real game sean talked about that in the opening this game is important because everything counts your numbers count to the win loss record counts it matters as you're going to give it to osmo again as he'll dive down to about the 10 maybe just inside the 10-yard line and hamilton will come up again from the safety to make the tackle well i think coach hauck you could hear from sean's interview but all week long coach hauck was very irritated by those questions it's like we're playing a game it's a football game i'm playing to win stop asking me that my favorite line was are they keeping score exactly i thought that was great look at the third long here third and about uh eight for the grizzlies at the 10-yard line cam's gonna go over the top and he finds sammy cam and he'll take it down to about the two and it should be a first down near the one yard line and samia cam with a nice grab in traffic well he's upset he didn't get in the end zone but wow what what a nice throw on time he just sits down right in the hole in between three defenders and notice how cam was on time with that football perfect and now they're going to get the ball up up the middle and the grizzlies will strike peter to start the spring game on their opening drive into the end zone for the score with osmol well that's where nick osmo is so tough he's a strong strong running back he got hit right at the one at the two yard line but look at that trunk that he has folks he is well built down low and he was able to power in and even break another tackle to get in the end zone what a great drive by the careers ron i mean they take opening kickoff a little bit of adversity but they stayed with it and they got it in the end zone coach how i'm sure is couldn't be happier well here's a transfer from ole miss jack cooper out of fresno california he is going to be in to do the kicking duties this year so get a look at the new kicker for the grizz and he'll put it through for the extra point and the montana grizzlies get to the end zone on their opening drive to start this exciting different spring season as the grizz take it for seven and you know you kind of have to like the way they move the ball up mixing it up with the running in the pass you saw osmo break some big runs but then you had that opportunity with that outstanding wide receiver court yeah you're missing a big name yeah or two i guess jerry louie mcgee is gone and then you know you you you come back in with samuel kemp but they got a lot of young receivers that are impressive for sure and you know the grizzlies fortunately were not hit too hard by the transfer protocol of course the big name samare toure is no longer here decided to transfer which is very unfortunate he's going to try his hand at nebraska in the big 12. but other than that the grizz were able to pick up a lot of really nice transfers to add to their roster and really bolster especially on the defensive side which we're going to see next coming up well doing the kicking this year the kickoffs will be punter eric buschini he's a six foot 206 pounder from helena montana and uh he was a guy that put the ball in the end zone when he was kicking off quite often for helena and this young man has uh in warm-ups didn't have a problem finding the end zone well he was one of those guys ron that when we prepared for helena high we didn't really work that much on our kickoff return that week because it was kind of pointless we knew he was going to put it way deep in the end zone every time anyways well cameron mckinney stands back on the left and he'll get the kick as a grizz muschini finds the back of the end zone and that again is the area that coach was uh most concerned about he was worried about special teams because you don't get a lot of time to work on that during spring ball but so far they've been pretty good yeah so far it's looked really good i think that the three reps that he's gotten so far have all been very successful and i think for him it was just a matter of the reps are so different as you're putting your uh i think what coach house stressed with me is you know coaches football coaches especially are such creatures of habit and during the regular season you have those habits those weekly habits of game prep but in all this long off season those are gone it's so different now we get a look at j.j heming a 6'5 215 pound redshirt freshman getting his first start as he'll hand it off to their uh backup back tyler flanagan and fight against go nowhere's at grizzly defense just smothers him as he tries to get to the corner well one of the things that center washington knew they were going to face in montana's defense is excellent pursuit the grizzlies have always pursued with passion they get hats to the football a lot of team speed on that side and you saw it right there from the very start as the grizzly defense gets set we'll update you on some of the changes on the d of course jace lewis stepping in as the leader of this defense and here's lemming on a screen pass and they'll find flanagan and he'll get close to a first down he gets tipped over the ball pops out but it's not going anywhere and the grizzlies get a helmet on him corbin and walker put a helmet down and pop the ball up but out of bounds well nice nice play right away to take advantage of the grizzlies aggressiveness and speed just throw a little screen out there that fumble's definitely caused by the ground anyways but boy here comes the snow it's big flurries and the fans are liking the snow and now boy they're going nowhere on this play on third and one they'll lose about two as the grizzly defense does not let flanagan find any breathing room robbie how comes up from the safety position with help up front and they just put it on him hard well we talked about both offensive lines being bigger and more experienced central washington does have a really good offensive line they had a 1500 yard rusher last year but that was just dominance at the line of scrimmage by the grizzly defensive front right and it was mark as well now i saw a hulk at the end but well now was the guy that put on the original hit and he's one of those new guys he got a lot of play and time in 2019 but boy has he stepped into a starting role here and he's been shining at spring ball here's another one those areas that grizz have been concerned about that's returns as gabe saucer will stand back and get out of the way as the ball will take a hop and he'll step away from it and it will be down to about the 22 where the montana grizzlies will have their second offensive possession so after that defensive stand it was fun we'll talk about that the defensive changes but right now we've got a timeout here on swx it's a sports saturday it's spring football with snow in missoula you gotta love it and welcome back to washington grizzly stadium is the central washington wildcats will come out on defense we had a little change there on the offense i was saying it was lending but picked it up it was jack smith that was starting out a quarterback for the wildcats but now their defense for the second time are gonna try to stop the grizzly offense says cam humphrey and his offense ready to go here again at tailback and doing a great job already is nick osmo and osmo will get the carry here as he follows that big offensive line over the right side following dylan cook and moses mallory yeah just a little inside inside zone play and osmo put his foot in the ground that's what you want just to one cut make your decision find your seam and hit it hard downhill that's the kind of runner nick osmo is and i think the grizz will be uh probably trying to create a lot of success today with their inside run scheme under center for cam humphrey now he's going to drop back because he'll move it around three to the right for the grizzlies as humphrey with plenty of time back there he's gonna finally find some room and take off on his own and this is one area that he's exceptional at and that's a scramble down to the 29. i really liked his patience there ron he didn't take off too quick now dalton snead probably would have started running a lot sooner because that was his thing a huge strength for dalton cam was really patient there watch he'll sit on it he'll go through his progressions finally step up and it's time to run i really like seeing that out of cam yeah one man to beat us he had a spy on the linebacker he's easily around him and the grizzlies at a first down at the 29 and across the look back again cam out of the backfield out to osmo who swings out on the flare and hospital will get the first down and then some as he stays in bounds over midfield for the montana grizzlies before he's finally tackled over there i believe hamilton again who's all over the field dante hamilton well this is another really good read cam senses that there's just nobody out in the flat no linebacker had dropped at all to provide any coverage so he just swings it out to his back that's one of those easy throws for a quarterback that ends up being a 20-yard gain once again in central washington territory going for the fence as they swing for it and the ball going to be just to the outside out of bounds good coverage over there on defense by the uh wildcats and on the defense over there was number two nathan perkins yeah 95 pounder perkins does a really good job as a corner of just really winning he's in dominant position right there and that's a nice catch by mitch but perkins had forced him so wide that by the time the ball fades him it ends up being out of bounds so nice job by perkins so second and ten for the montana grizzlies humphrey and in the backfield for the first time and we're gonna see mr harris get introduced to washington grizz not in a good way and we've been excited to see this young man as a he is a true freshman and xavier harris gets a rude introduction on a big hit out there wow well it blitz both linebackers come off the edge and just nobody to account for them there's nobody in your blocking scheme that can pick up both outside linebackers and so just kind of a dead play one that you end up having to eat and you're right not the kind of first college carry that xavier harris wanted empty backfield for the montana grizzlies on third and long and humphrey again this time gonna step up and he's gonna have plenty of room up the middle nobody there and he'll get the first down and dies ahead to about the 31 for a montana grizzly first down a gain of about 14. well that's crushing for central washington's defense they had great coverage and they even get pretty good pressure but cam is able to make the play and get a third and long with his feet and that's just unfortunate if you're central washington trying to get a stop what i'm impressed with though is that opening up the middle that his offensive line has given him i mean he has room to drive a bus through that big gap they're giving him to look over the middle yeah central's going to definitely have to do something to to contain maybe spy him a little bit with a linebacker because you're right there's big room in the middle cam throws one up gets hit at the line of scrimmage you're getting a hand on it and knocking it down a big mid out there i believe it was number 89 or 99 cabra hall carbajal is who it is that's what it was nope wrong one so max now or it looks like max now our defensive end got his hand up on it but coach fisk was really excited about his defense they had some question marks on that side but they liked how they were playing at the end of 2019 and felt like they had some some really good potential coming into this season so he was excited to see how they would do facing a real high-powered montana offense today and again up the middle they go with it on the run osmo going to get a gain of a body yard maybe two over the left side will bring up a third long for the grizzlies well so far i would say central has to feel pretty good about the power inside run that montana's tried so far they've been able to probably contain them to about two to three yards max which is you know pretty good you've heard a lot about montana's offensive line being much bigger being much more experienced and right now you're really holding your own if you're the wildcats well kissed our penny it's uh six five three fifteen is that nose guard and he's not easy to move out of there opry gonna go out to the flat and almost picked off doing a great job on the defense out there is gonna be cody o'connell from koala washington the red junior breaks it up well the wildcats brought pressure again it was a very good job picking it up and this is like you said just good coverage that ball could have easily been intercepted so right now i'm impressed with the wildcats back into their defense and how they're covering montana well the grizz going to try for the long field goal is in to do the kicking once again for the montana grizzlies jack cooper six 279 pounder from fresno california by way of ole miss and he gets an opportunity to put up a long one and the grizzlies will add three more and the montana grizzlies tack on three more with the long field goal and the grizzlies are out in front 10-0 scoring on both of their drives to open up this special spring sports saturday on swx [Music] welcome everyone back to washington grizzly stadium as montana takes a 10 to nothing lead over central washington what feels like a fall football game here in washington stadium as the snowflakes start to fall let's talk about some of the keys to the game in this one let's start with central washington number one for them is hold up up front coach fisk said that uh that was the number one key because number two they lean on experience they have a ton of starters coming back on this team but he said it doesn't matter how much experience you have if you can't hold up in the trenches and so far as grady and ron have kind of mentioned against the run they've been doing all right they just gotta kind of contain cam humphrey on some of these scrambles that's for montana number one was shake off the rust and they're doing pretty good at that so far as they have looked uh very good to start this game and then number two also is the kicking game when they ask coach couch maybe what's the the biggest question mark of this team they may be the most unknown and he said it's the kicking game and so far jack cooper banged on that long field goal and montana looking good in that area so far but guys it's just fun to be down here on the field there's only 5 000 fans but there is energy in the building and it's pretty awesome that's amazing and and the grizz once again bushini puts it deep into the end zone and right away a quick pass out into the flat and we again have a change at quarterback we are all expecting lemming but out there at quarterback is number nine jack smith the junior from phoenix arizona well that's just a good quick flip out to tyson rainwater that's something that they'll want to do is just get the ball out of his hands really quick nice hitch pick up four yards get something started get something good on first down against this grizzly defense smith with his team down 10-0 the grizzly scoring on both of their offensive possessions so far in the ball game is the wildcats trying to answer gonna hand it off to flanning and he's gonna get back to the line of scrimmage maybe a half a yard but great defense once again up front the linebacker core from the grizzlies shining pretty bright right now well coach houck said the linebacking core was probably his biggest question mark you know he feels really good about every unit as you go across the team the linebackers uh some new faces but a lot of depth that he wants to see kind of developed and there's jace lewis i don't know i guess that yeah there was ace lewis making the play and now i think we're going to see there's jason there's a pass over the top and it's picked up by the montana grizzlies coming over is safety gavin robertson and robertson with the inner step section near midfield as he went high in the air and took that one away well great interception great coverage by the corner corbin walker but that was all because of the pressure and we we called it out jase lewis two big plays in a row he applies the pressure and uh jack smith just kind of floats one up watch right here folks in your replay jace lewis coming in your screen puts a shot on good battle for the ball because i think that could have gone to either player but they were both on it half interception to each one of them walker and gavin were both right there and what a great turn of events the grizzlies with the first turnover the ball game the ball just short of midfield at the grizz 49 and they're back on the offensive hunt boy and cam humphrey has been spot on here so far yeah he really has he was just a little bit out too wide on the one fade ball but other than that he has been money completes another short one here on first down but again that's just gets good work to gabe salsa just going through your progressions taking your first read being patient putting it on the money and you talk about gabe saucer i mean this young man that we've been waiting to see him as a wide receiver he's been electric when he's been on the field as a returner he had some big plays for the grizzlies on some reverses and things it's just nice to see him out there all the time what a great athlete yeah and it's just kind of how it works obviously right he was behind the great jerry louis mcgee and he just had to be patient and wait for his time and here's a shot downfield they're going to get him for a push-up push off i think you're right as sammy put a hand on the back of the defender and gave him a push they did they got him his second offensive pass interference called the ball game that's right the first one was unintentional but this one just watch i mean he clearly yeah you're gonna miss it on the replay but he clearly puts an arm out creates a little space i mean it's a good job by him fighting for the ball creating space but obviously you cannot do that it's a push off it's a great call by the officials and last time montana was able to overcome some adversity on a penalty but this time second and 20. so last time central jumped offsides right away to to give the grizzlies back a little bit of yardage so this time if coach fisk wants his team to make a stand second and 20 they've got a chance well sammy uh comes back shaking his head but it was quite obvious that perkins had him covered pretty strong without the push so the grid's going to try it from long now second and 20 is humphrey with time this time coming to the right side we got a little pushing going on over here i don't see a flag down there as a ball intended down here on the left it's ryan simpson boy they're high on him the six six red shirt freshman from bozeman montana and they have been very impressed with him in spring ball yeah he's really come along as a lot of players obviously getting their chance we talked about gabe sulzer right those seniors leave or people transfer and it's your time to step up but patrick rogers also good coverage i think central washington so far has shown that they're going to trust these two corners to come up and play tight man-to-man and so far they've really withstood the test and here we go out in the flat and the ball going to be thrown behind sammy and it'll bring up a fourth and long for the montana grizzly so for the first time the grizzly offense unable to put something on the board with the possession but again you're getting credit to those cornerbacks for central washington they played tough perkins playing tough from safety they just really did a good job covering up the grizz receivers yeah you know it's surprising to see central uh maybe make that decision to say we're going to trust our corners to come up and play tight man-to-man put them on islands and and trust that they'll hold up but so far they've done the job so credit those two and central's defensive staff for believing in their guys well here's where we thought we'd see eric bushini this year is he has been punting very well at spring ball as he's been able to boom some big ones and this one he gets away but boy he has some pressure on him and what a kick and it's going to be taken way back at about the six yard line and the defense is there to make the cover for the montana grizzlies as i believe that was white who made the first hit the montana grizzlies pin them to thin inside the 15 where the wildcats will get a chance to try to get something on the board as they trail the grizzlies 10-0 here on your swx sports saturday spring fall football here at washington grizz how about that you get a couple of back-to-back double header action and money's made it into the building the excitement is going on here at washington grizz and we're ready for the defense to shine again well so far the grizzly defensive front has just dominated and here we go again just nothing doing with the run game and that central washington line might be experienced and they might be a lot bigger as well but they are just getting overwhelmed at this point by montana's speed up front and i think you know really committing to this 335 stack defense that bobby hauck and his staff have gone to boy you just let all those great athletes all those linebackers just swarm pursue to the football you know you got those safeties that run downhill so hard we all know about robbie hauck and he actually was the one that made the tackle on that last punt uh flying down the field adding to his total and so just a lot of speed a lot of excitement for the grizzly defense this year and that last tackle by braxton hill the anaconda copperhead made his first tackle here at washington grizz as a he came flying through and stopped flying again from getting anywhere now we got is it a delay a game it is delay a game on the wildcats well they've had such a tough job getting anything going offensively so obviously you can't afford to put yourself behind the sticks anymore and so now brings up a second and long and they've been struggling to protect the passer to get anything going in the run game so now poor jack jack smith is backed up the north end zone not as crazy because of the limited fans but they're still going to get after it all the students down there and he drops that snap now he's going to have to get out and run with it and the montana grizzlies are going to cover quick and what a great job coming off the block and getting there is braden damming as deming comes off his block and catches him from behind and drags him down well when you talk about it too deep you're not gonna see it as much maybe on offense in the rotations you know you'll see it for sure but on defense this is where you see it right now you've already mentioned a couple names that are all too deep pretty much everybody on the field right now is is kind of on that second list and the grizzlies don't fall off much i mean you watch their ones the twos come in they're going to be just as good a lot of talent on that defensive side of the football for montana here comes hill as he's going to get through and he almost gets there in time but the pass gets out by smith as it looks like he'll be short of a first down as he gets it out into the flat into the hands of darius morrison but the grizzlies are there to stop him nice job by justin ford another fbs transfer the grizzlies really have bolstered their defensive side with some good players transferring in to just help them out and ford's gonna be a good one you know coach hulk was so excited about the corner position which was such a question mark back in 2019 he feels like finally they have corners playing corner that they recruited as corners and not guys that they've grabbed from receiver or guys that are good athletes hey we need you over on this side of the ball they've got guys playing where they recruited him to play and salts are going to take it on the hop and breaks a tackle as game salsa will bring it back across they find some room and some blockers down field salsa inside the 10 out of bounds at about the eight where he's pushed out by the punter that's van soderberg who pushes him out at about the eight-yard line of the montana grizzlies i need to hit pay dirt again ron i guarantee you the first one that bounced that he let go i know that he regretted letting that go because he had a perfect bounce and so this time sure enough he picks it up on the good bounce this is what gabe solzer is all about folks i think he's got the talent unfortunately for me as a coach i had to watch it on the other sideline too many times where he just made electric plays like this especially as a returner but he's going to do this a lot in the next couple years what an exciting play he brought the electricity that jerry louis did for how many years absolutely so gabe sauce are the air apparent there and it's already the electricity is there this uh smaller crowd of washington grizz sure appreciated it here we go humphrey looking to go inside he does nice pass as he gets over to white and caitlyn white is one of those uh outstanding young receivers from he's out of north vancouver british columbia and what a great grab for him man camp's putting it right on the money down there in tight windows against the zone defense and the receivers are sure handed and really catching it getting shots right after they put their hands on it but they're hanging on so a lot of good signs coach hauck was very very happy with his top five receivers and all the young guys trying to push into that top group nick osmo wouldn't find peter for the second time in this ball game he's going to find tough sledding but he gets behind his right side yes he had a good push on the right side in line but not enough quite to get to the end zones he'll pick up about a yard was this first half our first quarter winds down coach fisk is just looking for any positive signs to build on and we've found really good corner play so far for his defense and that interior line on the inside run plays have really held up pretty well so those are a couple things that they can build on the wildcats so the grid is looking at third and goal from the two could be the final play here and we're going to see movement by the montana grizzly offensive line looked like a little feet movement out there by moses mallory so mallory will be caught shuffling his feet it's almost it's kind of doing that stutter step waiting for the and those are the kind of penalties that coach how any coach just hates your third and two on the goal line and you do that to yourself now you're backed up third and seven those are those things that just drive you crazy as a coach the discipline that you have to have understanding especially when you're in the red zone so now we'll see if they can overcome it that's part of football right you face adversity can you overcome the penalty opry's going to try to do it as he stacks three to the right he'll go to the right and he'll get the ball back down to the two but they won't get it in as it's complete out to white at the two yard line well and that's something keelan's going to learn you can't you can't run that play to the two yard line you got to get right to the end zone right i mean it's third it's third and goal so so run it one yard further and get down to that end zone that takes us the end of one the montana grizzlies up 10-0 but still trying to add to it as we got the first one in the books on this snowy saturday with swx it's spring football with the montana grizzlies up 10-0 welcome back to washington grizzly stadium the snowing sideways with the wind blowing out of the south here at washington grizz the grizzlies come back up 10-0 they're at fourth and goal from the two-yard line and grady is this where you say to your offensive line okay we've heard a lot of about you now prove it go get it i agree i agree i i thought going to break we talked about it if coach hulk would come out and go for it and i think you do you challenge your guys and say all right fellas we've been hearing about you let's prove it on the goal line can you get it in and here they go they are going for it and they'll check out with osmo and you'll go over the top he's got his man wide open he throws it too tall he had the touchdown had it in the back of the end zone but unable to come down to the ball thrown way too high well max randall put the pressure on came on a blitz from his linebacker position you can see it right there and he's the one that forced the overthrow he was wide open great play call everything is there even the protection that was a blitz well drawn up by central washington max randall forces the overthrow great stand by central mitch roberts wide open in the back of the end zone and uh nobody within 10 yards on either side of him just unable to connect but that will put mr smith and company in a deep hole here for the wildcats as we did see lemming warming up there but they'll come back out with smith and he'll be we've got whistles and things going on time out going to be called by coach fisk so coach fisk calls a timeout as he doesn't like what he sees uh on the lineup and the montana grizzly defense get a chance to reshuffle well i'm not sure am i incorrect ron that central has not gotten a first down yet they have not so you're you're struggling okay we're gonna we're gonna go to break we're gonna go to break so we'll do that timeout on the field the montana grizzlies defense spinning them in a hole can they keep there we'll find out we get back after this on swx sun shine on john rainey who's down on the field with swx yeah guys the sun coming out pretty nice down here um as montana tries to get a little sand here maybe you get a safety we're talking about guys up front obviously jesse sims kind of graduated he anchored the inside of that defense a year ago it's gonna be eli alford and alex governor kind of taking over of course governor well known for being a frustrated defensive tackle who led the team in interceptions with four last year as he gets in on the tackle right there so that's gonna be another area where we're gonna see hey a guy graduates and he was a very productive player for montana obviously we're number 37 and now you got a couple guys that are ready to step in and see that they can produce and fill those big shoes guys sean that's a great point and you see that all over with the grizzlies because you lose a dante olsen but a jace lewis and another group of linebackers step up and with this 3-3 stack defense your linebackers are under a lot of pressure as those big guys up front to stop it smith going to drop back to pass he has pressure in the end zone but he gets it off and the ball is going to be thrown to the inside incomplete and the quarterback got laid out pretty hard as smith got rid of that by the grizz defense but incomplete down the field as they went long for tyson rainwater well and actually a really good job by smith of staying alive in the pocket in the end zone and finding out just enough time to get it deep and really almost had a shot at it if it wasn't for the pressure applied there might have had a big gain rainwater had gotten just a bit behind the defense so here we go third and seven again fine again in the backfield behind smith zagrez defense looks to be bringing him well now sneaking around the end and he's gonna be able to step up he's got his man it's gonna be rain water out over the 20 or near the 20 for a first down the first first down of the ball game for the wildcats there it is they finally picked up that first first down which is huge rainwater just on a really good quick timing out and smith is on time perfectly with the ball uh central needed that you know you go the whole first quarter without a first down you're backed up deep in your own end zone after a stop to get that first down give you a little breathing room shoots a little confidence into your whole team there the whole sideline feels better about things so the montana grizzlies now stepping back on defense again adjusting moving around as they're gonna ball's gonna hit the turf into the grizzlies covered i believe they do the gorillas dropped mcgorren got on it for the grizzlies another one of those great defensive ends that really proved himself last year as a as a as a freshman and he's going to be a special one boy him and his little brother who's also joining they're talented kids so you'll see it right here just oh just a minute i think smith was going to pull it out was going to keep it on the zone read and uh running back sometimes that happens he grabs at it and puts it on the turf just something you cannot do especially the way this game is going and giving it to montana in the red zone second turnover to the favor of the grizzlies as humphrey comes back out under center for the montana grizzlies and they'll give it in motion coming across as it's ulcer and he'll get it down to about the 11 yard line came about three maybe four but great defense out on that end again hamilton is there to help put the hat on him and coming up and helping out for them as well as going to be number 27 cody o'connell when that quick fly sweep just a good way to get the ball into solster's hands right so electric such a dynamic player just want to get him as many touches as possible and the fly sweep is a good way to do it second and seven for the grizz as humphrey will look out now he's gonna get flushed out and cam's gonna find himself down inside the tent puts his hand down and keeps it going what a great job by him keeping that play alive looked like he was going to go down about the 12 and cam doesn't give up and squirts through to get it down to about the eight-yard line yeah he's got to be smart too i mean good effort watch as he steps up right here know right here you don't want to take too many shots you know be smart maybe get down don't take all the shots from the pursuit so that's the things that he's going to learn and well you want to stay out there and stay healthy that's the key well right now cam trying to get that first down or better yet to the end zone for the grizzlies as humphrey throws it low and in the dirt and set it to intended for sammy kim but throws it underneath that'll bring down a third and about three or four and we're going to get the kicking team in for the montana grizzlies a little bit of red zone struggles they got stopped for the field goal on the second drive after that first beautiful drive right think about it and then they they turn it over on downs and now this time they uh get stopped again and with great great field position the defense turns it over and they're going to come up have to be forced to kick a field goal so coach hill can't be happy with that all american long snapper matt o'donohue going to snap it back as we get the second field goal attempt by the montana grizzlies and it's no good wide left the grizzlies miss on the attempt as montana grizzlies still out in front though 10-0 here on this swx spring football sports saturday stay with us and welcome back to the sunshine now yes it is montana wait a couple minutes and this weather will change for you is we've had snow sideways and snowflakes coming down all over and now beautiful blue sky and sunshine over washington grizz and before central washington's wildcats son has been shining on them as their defense has been able to stop the grizz on their last two possessions yeah coach fisk has to be feeling really good with how his defense has kind of settled in and just came up with two really big stops back to back uh boy i mean that side of the ball is looking pretty good but central's got to figure something out on offense only one first down thus far and just have not been able to do anything either running or throwing the ball so we'll see how this this next drive turns out for central it's going to be key it's only 10-0 but if they're really gonna threaten in this game i think they've got to get some points on the board here soon well they had the split backs trying to give a little extra protection out there and now smith going to go over the top and he's got his underman wide open as he finds his receiver and gets it all the way out to the 40-yard line so the biggest offensive play for central washington you called it they needed to get that big play and they got it right there as they find the receiver on the underside on this one well it's kind of a double wheel play right there and it got the linebacker to come up on the swing route by the back and allowed jojo hillel to get up that sideline on that wheel route and a nice throw by smith and good protection by his offensive front so right now for the wildcats their best offensive field position of the ball game and he's going to get pressured and goes back over the other side and it's almost picked up did he get his hands under it robbie how came in and they're saying no it hit the turf they're calling it down but boy he made a valiant effort at that one had an opportunity and almost came up with it yeah almost got it robbie hauck making a good break on the ball good effort and you'll see the ball definitely hits the turf that's what you want to do though give the effort show it to the ref you never know you might get that call but central going with a little bit of misdirection now on their pass game trying to roll the quarterback out and smith will set up and throw it back trying to catch the grizzly defense a little bit off guard on robbie hulk of course preseason all-conference all-american just outstanding safety for the montana grizzlies and he and gavin together are impressive here's smith he's going to take off of it and he's found some room he'll get a first down over the 50 and he slips as he gets down here the 45. well i just mentioned ron that this is a real key time in this game for central their their defense has made a stand so now offensively you've got to do something with the ball if you truly are going to make this game competitive and here they go they are doing it behind jack smith who looks like he's settled in a little bit and really now starting to play well well right now the grizzlies only up 10-0 as their last two offensive possessions ended without a score so here's a chance for central washington to get right back in this they'll give it to flanagan up the middle he'll run into jace lewis as he'll get a yard or two but chase meets him right in the hole well there's two number 34s competing hard going at it i mean those are jets just football right there there's your middle linebacker stepping up finding the window and just one-on-one against the running back lowers his shoulder pads and that's good football that's what it's all about right there coming out looking at a second and about seven for jack smith and the wildcats looking to go to the air and he'll go underneath he had his man just couldn't hang on to it in and out of the hands of the intended receiver and unable to come up with it as i isaac crichton well there's jace lewis again on the coverage and let's talk about jace a little bit you know ron we discussed who benefited the most from this long break on the football team and you you could you know debate that positionally obviously a quarterback's going to benefit a lot i'm sure cam humphrey and all the quarterbacks did but how about health wise jace lewis is a guy that if it would have been normal would have been really banged up he was nursing a lot of injuries but all of this time has allowed him to get fully healthy so there's a lot of situations that have benefited as tough as this has all been boy the grizzlies bring the house but they get the ball off smith does a good job and breaking through and finding some running room muzutani is going to take it all the way down inside the 20-yard line and i'll tell you smith had some pressure well now was there they they had uh blitz coming and able to get rid of this one but um able to do it watch this perfect call because they catch him with an uh wide receiver tunnel screen against the blitz that is perfect you got pressure that's what you want you get the ball off just in time to your receiver coming on that tunnel screen you get blockers out in front and unfortunately a couple missed tackles for the grizz too and central is on the move nashville saves the touchdown and brings him down at about the 18. and the best offensive possession so far for central washington is a wild handed off to flanagan who bounces off a tackle and moves to the outside and gavin comes over with the help from fouch to bring him down and good play out there by gavin robertson man one of the things i love so much ron about sports all sports is just the big momentum momentum is so key i mean this game seemed like it was on the edge of being dominating and almost over and all of a sudden two big stops in a row montana doesn't capitalize it's only ten nothing and central's getting it going on offense and we've got a football game a lot of people said could this team play with the grizzlies people are saying well gee they're a division 2 team they have 11 transfers from division 1 schools on this roster so definitely the athletes as the ball is going to be flags fly everywhere the ball hits the ground the grizz cover up jace lewis came out with the ball but the flags were going before once again we're gonna have a penalty against the offense and you see jace grabbed that ball and he was ready to go to the house as he went down and picked it up but well ron you talked about could this team come in and compete with montana montana's players and coaches knew because they've watched that idaho film and that was a game that was talked a lot about central washington in 2019 had idaho vandals on the ropes and so yeah man i mean they know the quality of talent and uh again great job by their offense but now they're backed up a little bit second and 13. we'll talk more about that because i want to bring up the 2008 match up here at washington grizz as smith will roll out to the right and he has the ball over the top almost getting over there as hauk again but uh ball just a little beyond his reach but let's go back to 2008 when this team came in they had the grizzlies uh had to do a last second field goal to win that one and it was one of your students who was a a key for that matchup well it's a special special day for me back in 2008 because one of my favorite quarterbacks of all time mr mike riley who was a special young man that i coached and obviously ended up at central washington and almost came in here and pulled off an upset against the grizzlies who went and played for the national championship that year what a great game that was mike lit it up and of course went on to be a cfl grey cup winner mvp just a terrific player but boy this game has the looks of being as competitive as that one here now well and again pressure up front on smith as the grizzlies come through and it was joe barbos who got in there and put the pressure on he had to throw it a little bit too high over the hands of flanagan and that'll bring up a fourth from fourth down and about uh 12 maybe 13. well good job by the grizzly defense of stiffening their necks down here in the red zone they let central have a really nice drive move the ball all the way down the field but then they did not break you know it's the old bend but not break and here's the defense forcing a field goal try ben soderbergh is going to do the kick as he gets the ball and the kick on the way and central washington the wildcats will get on the board on soderberg's field goal as he makes a 10-3 the grizzlies up by seven and they'll get the ball back right after we come back here on swx spring football sports saturday and welcome back to washington grizzly stadium it's been a long time but it's been worth waiting for the montana careers taking on central washington here on a special spring football game in the ncaa allowing the schools to play spring ball and some of the teams playing in a spring season but the grizzlies montana state uh also sac state northern colorado and kel and uh portland state all bowed out and so they're all allowed to play games and the montana grizzlies have this one and the next week we'll be back with portland state well so far for montana the only two scores that they have have been set up by the kicking game which was coming into this coach house biggest question mark but they had a big kickoff return to open the game which led to their first touchdown and then a punt return which put them in position for a field goal so see if the kicking game can come up big again and central adjusts by pooching it to the service them up and still get it so says okay here we go i just have a little less distance to go to get to the end zone as he breaks the tackle the kicker he's down outside the 20 and loses his balance at about the 26 yard line but the grizzlies will have great field position but they've been in this position twice now and stopped by the central washington defense well for them they have to hope that because it's a kicking game situation as i mentioned uh boy just a great job again by that execution of the kickoff return team and then again the electric gabe sulcer but so coach hulk's got a count on hey kickoffs our returns in the in the in the return game has given us all three of our two of our scores so let's see if we can do it a third time and the grizzlies with salsa we like his electricity and he brings it who do you kick to because flowers has gone to the house twice with it now seltzer's beating you up twice on returns do you just uh onside and take what you can get and humphrey's gonna try to take what he can get as he goes down underneath and a great grab down there for the montana grizzlies mitch roberts who uh had a great year in 2019 and he's back and he's one of their go-to guys so we go back to the red zone we were talking about the defense and just that pressure makes him sail that pass here we go over the left side is osmo gonna get a couple yards but a great job coming up putting a hit on him out there to keep him from getting to the corner by max randall yeah central's defense now has stood up two times in a row and here we go with the third and three coming up and see if they can do it again you know with their backs against the wall the last couple drives they have played great and osmo's going to take it just straight up the middle and again tough sled and he's not gonna get it he might get a yard but that big offensive line for montana that uh unable to move the defense i wasn't sure that nick made the right cut on this one i know he's trying to follow the push right there but i thought he had a chance to maybe make a cut and bounce this one outside watch to the left side maybe there's a hole right there on the back side of that zone play max randall the backer is coming but he's going to have to make a one-armed tackle and thought maybe there was some sled here goes coach hulk again short yardage fourth and two the grizz gonna go for it again now we've got a timeout gonna be called by central washington as they'll take a timeout they didn't like the setup so the montana grizzlies will be looking at fourth and two when they come back from the sideline here at washington grizzly stadium and again the red zone offense is is in in question we'll talk more about that when we come back the grizz up hopefully getting a fourth and two here we'll be back with it after this time out on swx we're back and so is the snow as the snow continues to fall the sun went away for a little bit don't worry it'll change the grizzlies come back out though looking at a fourth and two and grady right now that red zone defense for central washington's been winning these matchups his cam's gonna roll left he's gonna find an opening he should get the first down will as he gets to the corner and gets inside the 15 before he's pushed out of bounds for a montana grizzly first down well montana i think still left with some question marks because really they haven't executed on any of their short yardage plays cam this is just a broken play he ends up scrambling but central had covered it up and there was nothing there so yes they do move the chains but still a lot of work to do for montana in those short yardage situations one bright spot there is a cam humphrey read it and did the right call and got that first downs keep this drive alive the grizzlies only up by seven is they'll go back to osmo who tries over the right side and hamilton comes up puts a pop on him and randall's there as well and not a whole lot of room well hamilton doing a really nice job all game long from his free safety position reading run and coming up and filling those lanes and of course montana cannot get a body on him he's not accounted for in the run scheme uh just doing a really good job of coming up safety play just like montana so used to seeing from robbie hauck got that gain of one and they'll look at second and nine here from the 14-yard line as the grizzlies look it over again cam humphrey gonna take the ball looks to go over the top and he's gonna have his man salsa in the end zone and salsa splits the defenders for the touchdown [Applause] what a great catch by gabe sulzer folks i hope you can see this one on replay fully this is just fantastic this is gabe sulzer to a t the definition of how he plays football cam does a nice job of putting it right in the hole in the zone but watch this catch that is outstanding boy and coming across to put a push on him was cody o'connell and then right there is wells perkins and both of them have been on great coverage throughout this game and you got to give salsa credit he just went up and brought that one down with a circus catch in the end zone the point after for the montana grizzlies is going to be good by jack cooper so the grizzlies add another seven to the scoreboard in the snow here at washington grizzly stadium and there you go you talked about that red zone and trying to get finished in the red zone they figured something out a little bit there well and coach hauck's gonna love the fact that his kicking game is infusing energy into his offense and so again three for three three big returns have set up all three of their scores but this is a concern now for montana as our defense comes back as we look back to this drive under the sunshine for central washington well jack smith the quarterback for central washington finally really got it going settled down got in a groove he made some plays with his feet here was that inside screen where missed tackle there by anu on the outside and fouch saved a touchdown potentially but the cribs were able to force a field goal try so they were able to to firm up there in the red zone and we are sitting at 17-3 and yes ladies and gentlemen that was the same day same game today the sun was out then we're back to snowfall here at washington grizz as uh the weather changes by the second here as the montana chris he's ready to kick it off and a great job kicking off so far eric buschini the helena native has put it in the end zone every time and let's see if he can put her in there again as he sends it on the way and this one going to be taken at about the one yard line as they'll bring it out for the first time on the return it's flanagan out over about the 16 maybe the 17-yard line and the montana grizzlies come away with a stop and it was o'connell a young man that you know a little bit about who makes the tackle for the grizzlies patrick comes up with the tackle well patrick one of the all-time greats that i've ever been privileged to coach just an outstanding player at glacier high school and uh so proud of him and the success that he's having so far down here in missoula but boy that shows you buschini's leg strength that was against a stiff wind and he still put it right to the one yard line so montana is going to be able to have excellent kickoff coverage and punt coverage all year behind his leg and back at it they're going to drop back smith will get a flare out of the backfield as he gets it to his man out of the backfield they'll get a game out there on the right side to ray green the senior running back from vancouver fires out for a gain of about seven good execution here by the wildcats they're gonna fake a wide zone to the left and then just come back with a little quick screen to green on the right side nice blocking and that's a really good first down gain if you're gonna have success against this excellent montana defense getting good yardage on first down is going to be the key and that's one of the keys of the game according to coach fisk does not get caught in third and long against this defense and we're going to have smith dropping back again he has his man downfield and he's going to get it off and complete off to rainwater again as tyson rainwater gets it right in front of nash fouch for a first down well and i like the adjustments that the wildcats have made offensively they're letting jack smith move in the pocket they're getting him outside using some play action some misdirection obviously if if they just drop back and expect him to be a pocket guy against this grizzly defense it's going to be tough sledding so the adjustments they've made have really helped him start to get on track first and 10 from the 36 for the wildcats and they're going to pull it back out and smith's going to keep it this time going around the end and fouch is out there on the run with him chasing him and he's going to cut him down at about the uh looks like about the 42-yard line as fouch catches him from behind it keeps it from being even bigger well you know ron what's interesting is with all the question marks in the depth chart and really not knowing central washington's roster and shoot we didn't even know who the starting quarterback was and there were so many different looks but boy jack smith even the way the first few drives went we probably still weren't sure but you can start to see now the talent that this young man possess is really starting to play well well the two deep we got just uh early this week showed him as the number two guy and the number one guy was going to be lemming flags are going to fly right away some movement on the offensive line but he was even on the two deep and even on the two deep here for game day he's listed as number two and he started this game and has been out there the entire time and even coming into this their star quarterback more from last year or from 2019 that i go saying last year but from 2019 everybody thought he would be back and we didn't find out until last week that he left to go to work yeah just crazy all the changes because of this long time period off and really central washington didn't have much on their website until just two days ago they just hired a brand new sports information director i think last friday so yeah it's been kind of crazy and we apologize to any of the fans wow there's a big hit that's going to be out of bounds but i do want to know who put that hit on kevin robertson great job hanging on to the ball but yeah i was just saying we do want to apologize to any you wildcat fans if we miss some names or don't know some of the names boy we've been struggling to kind of get this roster and get information but you know doing our best to to point out your guys and they're they're battling hard here today and these crazy weather conditions well gavin robertson who won the golden helmet as the hardest hitter on this grizz defense in 2019 showed why right there with a big pop that'll bring up a third and nine and the grizz are coming and rolling out to get away from it is smith and he throws it down and just in and out of the hands of his receiver who made a valiant attempt trying to get to that one the ryan ramones man this is a good throw by jack smith working to his left rolling out that's a tough ball and he puts it against or with a win puts it out there where he needs to to avoid the interception and ramones just can't quite hang on to it the grizzlies are forced to punt you know that's one of the things we i want to talk about in this game and we'll get to that but those on-field adjustments because you really don't have a lot of film on each other there's been a lot of changes made and it looks like the coach fisk made an adjustment by roland smith out and trying to get him out of the pocket for sure and coach hauck told me that he thought that really this game would come down to coaching adjustments because of things you just don't know what you're going to see there's a nice job of coverage by central washington cody o'connell's made a couple plays we've called his name out but gabe salsa this time cody says not going to go but going back to that the idea of adjustments on the field that that is a very important part of the game today is it possibly one of your uh impact players could be your coaching staff for sure and coaching adjustments obviously are always huge you always are going to make adjustments in game and then at half time but in this game especially just because they don't know what they're gonna see they haven't had the film they haven't had a normal scouting report at all and so it's basically all right let's show up and play and then coaches we have to make adjustments here's another nick osmo hat off no it's gonna be humphrey pulling the back and cam's gonna roll the corner for a gain of about seven as uh osmo made the fake and we got cam gets up limping a little bit well that was a good read he finally pulled one he hasn't pulled a zone read yet and that time the defensive end chased it down so it was the correct read by cam but obviously don't like to see him coming up a little bit gimpy now he'll shake it off he's a tough young man and he's going to give it to osmo this time osmo's going to find nothing over the left side a great job filling by max randall and company is they didn't give him any place to go well again i think central washington's interior defensive front has done a terrific job as well as a linebacker you know we've seen great play from dante hamilton and they just haven't allowed montana to get anything going on the inside yet today and an example of uh not getting everything there's a number 60 and we don't have a 60 on the roster we have for central washington who was in on that stop so now the grizz going back to it's going to be defensive offside so they're going to hand the ball off as oswald tries to get first down but he's going to be short but i think they'll get it on the penalty as osmo will be about a half yard short on that right side well and you're upset obviously that you jump offsides and you're going to give them the first down but once again you've you've made a stop it that would have turned him over it would have made him punt the ball so central just doing a really good job of bottling up the run game so far which i know has to concern coach howe can be a little bit disappointing with the focus on that offensive line and what they were hoping to see today so the grizzlies will get the first down on the offsides by the defense and to keep this drive alive as a leads by 14 here at washington grizz no continuing to fall at this time as campbell drops straight back with plenty of time and he's got his ball off he has gabe saucer and salsa with a one-handed grab from behind and gabe saw for mr electric down to the 28-yard line and on the defense down there with the stop is uh going to be a james henson well you can just see folks how great gabe saucer is going to be a one-handed catch just so talented and again he's been waiting for his time i know he's been frustrated but it's finally his time to shine and he's doing it there's a nice break of a tackle out there by osmo as he runs through the arms of the defender it was uh sonny's fuava that tried to stop him and gabe will get a couple yards out of something that looked like he was going to go for a loss again another one-yard gain is all for osmo just tough sledding up inside the grizz just obviously are going to stay with it just keep pounding away and and looking to get better with their fronts trying to move up to level two which right now they're not getting up to that second level linebackers and safety is able to get in there and make plays so bring up a second long and the grizz go with the empty backfield this time as cam's changing things up as he'll look and go out into the flat to gabe salsa and look at the blockers in front of salsa as he rolls the corner breaks a tackle down inside the 15 for a montana grizzly first down and the stop mate out there saving the touchdown by deon hudson well if you're a class double a montana high school football fan at all uh you're used to seeing this gabe solcer all over the field making all sorts of plays man it was a lot of that for billing senior for four straight years everybody in double a was glad when that young man finally graduated and came here and he's finally getting his chance to get a lot of touches and making the most of it i saw conlan beaver leading the way on the outside to block for him it was impressive to see that big body downfield here's a flare pass out into the flat osmo breaks the tackle gets close to the first down there's a great read by cam hunter humphrey folks the the blitz comes from the outside the linebacker vacates the coverage you'll see it right here here comes the linebacker off of the edge so there's nobody left just a good touch ball that's one you just gotta get in your running backs hands but good read and good throw once again hamilton there to knock him out of bounds as a montana grizzlies down inside the 10. and the grizzle take it down to about the five looks like it could be close to first down with about a minute to play a clock running here in this first half but the montana grizzlies trying to attack one more on before halftime as we get get down to 50 seconds now yeah this would be big too because think about the struggles they've had on these third and ones third and twos especially in the red zone too so to capitalize at the end of this half as the clock ticks down would be huge for the offense down underneath 40 is humphrey looking to beat the clock he's going to give it to osmo again no humphrey's going to keep it and humphrey over the left side for the montana grizzly touchdown right at the 32nd mark left to play in this first half now you could almost script that one ron because as you get in the red zone and these short yardage that the gaps tighten up and that defense is hunkered down to stop obviously that that touchdown from getting in on the inside quarterback great chance to pull it and uh make it around the edge and cam shows his athleticism right there but that's a big drive i think for montana especially with the way central had started to kind of compete a little bit to put this one in was was huge for him and cooper jack will step on as he'll get a chance for another one as he goes for the point after and the montana grizzlies will get it and the grizz go up 24 to 3 with just 30 seconds to go till halftime as the montana grizzlies getting in cam humphrey hanging on to it and that play set up you'd have to say grady by how many times they stayed in the middle how many times they kept trying to find that dive up the middle using osmo and the defense expecting they need one they're going to him and cam able to read it pull it out and go yeah exactly and again that's usually the best time as a quarterback to pull that ball because again down in the red zone gaps tighten up you're going to get more guys in the box on the front and so that leaves less guys obviously on the edge and so if you pull it you're going to be pretty free as a quarterback to get it in if you're joining us wherever in montana around the country wherever you are and keep in mind next week portland state comes in here to washington grizzly stadium and they're going to allow sounds like possibly more fans in other than the 5 000 that's maybe up to 8 500 so watch for your ticket sales erica's where those cheerleaders up in the grand stands usually the student section here at washington grizz they're all down in the northeast end zone where the crazies usually are well the wind has died down just a little bit so buschini should be able to pound this one and sure enough and it's going to be a fair cut put the fair catch sign up there for the wildcats mckinney will make the grab and they'll come back out so the montana grizzlies with 30 seconds to go here till halftime uh with a comfortable lead but you're right it was so important grady to get that last touchdown to get something there especially since the last time you've been stopped well to really feel good about it going into the locker room otherwise boy there's probably going to be a pretty good butt chewing by coach out on your red zone your short yardage your finishing drives but that's that's going to be a little bit of a breathing there for coach out to go in and say okay we got one in uh now what adjustments can we make to be a little more consistent especially in that short yardage red zone area well here comes jack smith out for the wildcats they have about 30 seconds to try this thing down the field they're going to run a flare they bring the man in motion across the field and it is going to be once again muzatani who is going to be run out of bounds by the grizzlies justin ford really good job comes over from louisville another fbs transfer who's going to really help this defense and uh boy just a good play of making sure he keeps his outside responsibility and then wrapping up making a solid tackle and that's going to bring us to the end yep that's going to take us down as they let the clock run out the montana grizzlies will go to the locker room here washington grizz with a 24-3 lead over the central washington wildcats as the montana grizzlies go to the locker room but keep in mind this grizzly team is exceptional in the second half is uh throughout all last year uh taking their opponents apart in the second half as we're getting ready to go down on the field sean rainey is standing by on the field with coach bobby houck hey hey coach how's it going obviously it's been a long time since you ran back out of the tunnel onto the field uh what was it like getting out here and watching your team here in the first half well you calmed me down by saying that it's good to be out here and uh obviously we've got some things to clean up but it was fun to be out here playing what did you like what do you want to see improve from your team going in the second half well you know the control field position like that that most that that was a dominating field position half and to only have 24 is a little disappointing so we got to get the ball in the end zone hey coach when you come out i don't know it might be snowing it might be sunny who knows in montana here we go montana schizophrenic weather go grizz hotel we're at the half the montana chryslers out in front on this special spring sports saturday with swx halftime coming back after this and welcome back to washington grizzly stadium on this special sw exports saturday spring football the montana grizzlies leading the central washington wildcats here at the half out of 24-3 and monty making an appearance down on the field as he's flipping through the grizz and grady right now here in this first half uh the montana grizzlies as we heard bobby and you had mentioned this they dominated field position but were unable to finish when they needed to well remember coach hauck is a special teams guy that's his real focus that's what he loves that's what he coaches and so to put his football team in such great position that first half like that's an unbelievable first half on special teams and that's an area he was concerned about they played great and then to just feel like you didn't capitalize you didn't come away with what you should have in a game where you know i was feeling it they should have had 35 or 40 or whatever on the board and only have 24. i think that's where his disappointment was a little bit well let's go down to sean rainey he's down on the sideline with us and sean you're down there with the 5 000 fans i'm sure it's just a little bit different than what you're used to hearing from on the field during the grizzly game yeah obviously certainly not um as loud especially on the north end zone but it's uh i think just it's been so long since we've gathered in places where you've even been around this many people so there is definitely an atmosphere and an electricity down here and an excitement especially i'm on the central washington sideline and they're jumping around super excited especially when they cut it to 10-3 there but yeah there is some energy down here on the field but like brady mentioned you know i'm sitting down here on the field and i'm kind of watching the offensive line and then battling with the with the defense here when talking about montana and really not necessarily seeing some of the push that we expected especially with a bigger offensive line i talked to offensive line coach chad dermer before the game and they got a lot bigger at the guard position they moved colton keynes over there and they got moses mallory skyler martin then of course dylan cook started out as a quarterback in butte went to northern now came down to montana and it's been an awesome at left tackle then obviously got colin beaver so they are big on the offensive line but really not seeing the push especially in those short-yardage situations which i'm sure to be something that you know grizz fans are going to want to see in the second half and sean is as you're down there on the field with with all the things that are going on we're already out as well that they're unable to really move that offensive line but they're giving cam plenty of time seems like he's had a lot of time to look downfield but some great coverage by the central washington corners yeah and the pass protection has has been there and that's been something that has definitely lacked in the last few years i mean we've seen dalton snead at times have to run around for his life and cam has been pretty protected back there in the pocket so that is good to see and i think you know you guys touched on it but gave solster getting him back and healthy he tore his acl he sat out for a year and he's had some hamstring issues this spring he's had some hand springs spring hamstring excuse me issues throughout his career playing football but just to see the dynamic player that he is not only on offense but on special teams and that punt returner because let's not forget jerry louis mcgee the most exciting and best part returner in school history is gone now and getting gabe sulzer in that in that position and him showing off what he can do there and that's a big thing for montana you know grady you talked about that and sean we talked a period during the game about injuries and this time off being good jace lewis with his shoulder gabe sauce with his hamstrings so this time off has been valuable to get people healed up and get guys back to full speed for sure a lot of healing was able to take place and a lot of guys able to decide to get things fixed that they normally wouldn't have been able to so from that standpoint this long break that's probably the biggest benefit for montana and sean i know you've been getting a little more time with the team at spring ball and everything but there's a few players missing noticeably from the grizz field and from their sidelines they're still little guys banged up here in spring ball yeah number one marcus knight um you know the team won't officially comment on it but you know he's pretty banged up with a knee injury so unsure of his status kind of moving forward so that'll be something to monitor as far as montana goes and guys i mean you talked about you guys getting healed up but also like that freshman class the true freshman class with jacob mcgowan some of those guys nick osmo we've seen them like that's an extra year that they've allowed and then you see the red shirt pressuring class and orion simpson some of those guys being able to rise up the depth chart as well with the year off so that's been kind of interesting to watch we've seen you know ryan simpson in the game and some of those younger guys playing pretty well so gonna be probably seeing a lot of a little bit more depth here in the second half which would be interesting for uh montana fans well we'll see where it goes we get ready for the second half the grizzlies out in front of central washington on this special spring football sports saturday at swx stay with us halftime continues after this and welcome back to washington grizzly stadium on this snowy sunny rainy whatever we're getting it all in one day here at washington grizzlies and montana grizzlies helping spring football up against central washington's wildcats degree is on the scoreboard in front 24-3 and this first half grady there's a lot of highlights there's a lot of good things that happened we kind of talked about some things that didn't but a good first half well folks if you missed it the return game was probably the biggest highlight here is start to game malik flowers just like he did all last season or in 2019 gets the grizz into a good field position and osmo takes it in to start the scoring then the defense comes up with their first turnover gavin robinson comes over makes a great catch from his free safety position after that you're going to see another return gabe salsa it was time for him he's gonna show up a lot here over the next few minutes of highlights but takes it off the bounce an electric player big punt return which set up another field goal and then the defense another turnover jacob mcgowan gets in on a fumble a mishandle by the backfield of the wildcats now central's jack smith started to settle in a little bit you'll see a couple nice completions right here it was by far their best drive of the game here's the second one on a little inside receiver screen center was not able to push it any further after this right here though and settled for a field goal so central decided to try to pooch kick but they didn't pooch it high and short enough and gabe was able to scoop it up great blocking by his return team and set up montana for this touchdown and guess who gabe solzer once again just a great first half by that young man out of building senior cam humphrey then finished the scoring by keeping it a zone read play and get into the end zone and that takes us to where we're at 24 to 3. you could almost call gabe saucer mr highlight reel i mean he dominated that reel as he was stunning just impressive in that first half but one of the things i wanted to ask you about because it's something a lot of people at home saying well geez the grizz aren't looking that good or they're they're misq and here and there these young men have not played in the game for 485 days they have not really been wide open like this you're going to see miscues you're going to see mistakes you're going to see things that you wouldn't see in a regular maybe by next fall but this is spring ball we need to keep that in mind yeah for sure for sure and it's just been so different you know i i mentioned in the first half that football coaches maybe more than any type of human being are creatures of habit and during the season you get in such a routine you know that routine is so important and so for all of this time off there really wasn't that routine it was just you know drills and winter conditioning and weightlifting and then some practice which is kind of full go and it's just not that normal flow and so that's where coach was concerned about special teams if you're wondering about it because it's not that regular game week type of prep it's just it's so different and all of a sudden you find out you have a game and uh yeah there's just a lot of changes ron which have led to some some differences that nobody's ever experienced before i mean we're all going through it in life with kovid well so are football teams well we're about ready for the second half who will be the star of the second half highlight reel we'll find out as the grizzlies and the wildcats ready to step back onto washington grizzly stadium for the second half with montana grizzly football you're on s w x it's been a long cold winter the grizzly awakens from hibernation it's been months since it's eaten he's hungry and ready for the season ahead pretty wrong i don't know about you guys but i thought that hype video was pretty awesome shout out to austin valley who kind of put that one together along with eric tabor and it was kind of funny i asked chase lewis about what it was like shooting at he said they did it in montana in missoula like when they had that negative degree storm he said it was he said it was pretty cold and they would uh have to hop in the car every now and then when shooting it but certainly a sweet video as we get the second half underway well we do it with machini kicking it to the end zone and sean you're right that video just it just put shivers down your spine and and that's even watching in the heat of your front room just think how those players were outside and at the end when they're running you see the players running they're actually running to the car to get to get warmed up eric was telling us that was kind of fun well ron when they showed it at the start of this game in the stadium it was like you said man chills down your spine hair standing up on the back of your neck i can't imagine what it would have been like if this place would have been packed out with 25 000 fans well we're ready to bring it back at you jack smith back out at quarterback he's five of 11 with an interception 72 yards he had that one long pass at 25 to his tight end and here he is back trying to make things happen the smith finds time over on the side he gets the ball out what a grab what a nice grab out there for the uh washington rain one running water i tried to get all my papers back in order here but rainwater grabs that what a great grab yeah it was the coverage was perfect by anu right there i mean he's he's all over him and he's upset you can see after rainwater stays with it concentrates and uh on all he can do is just put his hands on his helmet oh no of course a safety in when he was at oregon state transferred it as a corner here at uh university of montana again man in motion as they come back out and they're going to give it to flanagan who's going to try to find some room up that middle that's been tough sledding as well now's there also o'connell's there is the montana grizz don't give him much well both teams have really struggled to establish anything on the inside and of course you're going to stay with it i mean that's your game the inside zone running play for both teams and so you're going to keep cracking at it and we'll see which which offensive front can wear down the others defensive front the most as this game wears on and this is where you would expect that montana's depth would become a big factor smith rolls out it looks like a misdirection and he's going to do a good job just finding something getting rid of that one as he throws it off into the hands of samuel sanchez the tight end as he'll get a few yards there's the montana grizzlies come up and put a pop on him and stop him and it was chase lewis out there on the tight end this is good football first of all by jack smith just competing and making the play but look at patrick o'connell the way he plays it forces him to throw it and then watch montana pursue folks this is what they're known for the ball and they stop gavin robertson and the two safeties getting help from robbie howe can they stop him from getting the first down keep him a yard short on that usually a little flare pass like that'll easily get you guarded too but the two safeties make it impossible well here we go with a fourth and inches fourth and short a little less than a yard it looks like coach fisk with a decision here and he's keeping his offense on the field it's a big decision right here obviously because you don't get it montana's in good field position to start this third quarter on offense for them if you do get it obviously you're saying hey it's 24-3 if we're going to compete in this game we've got to keep the ball keep the chains moving he's going to think about they're going to take your time out they're going to think about it with a timeout as coach chris fist calls for the timeout for the central washington wildcats looking at fourth and short so we'll take a timeout with them the montana grizzly defense back against one ready to come out on fourth and short we'll be back with it on sws radio we're back big decision here for coach chris chris fisk he's got a fourth in short do you try to pin the grizzlies back do you come out and go for it give me your call as a coach man it's tough and it looks like coach fisk is gonna trust his offensive line his short yardage package it's been hard all game long but this is a crucial play in this game obviously i'm going to move things around they're going to come up under center and smith's going to drop back he gives it fine again he's going to get it looks like he has enough for the first down barely as a grizz defense comes up on him and o'connell was there and i'm not sure ron i think on second look i think it's short definitely gonna get a measurement well both both line judges came in and yeah see he's down he extends it late but where he went down he did not get it in fact it's well short bab rose had him tied up pretty tight down there on the ground as they're gonna bring in the chains and well i think you're right i think after they re-spot this he's gonna be short the grizzlies are gonna get it well and both line judges actually did a good job of seeing where the ball was remember it's where the ball is when the player is down and when the play was over it was extended but i mean you can see that okay see the he's sitting seated right there where the ball is and where the ball is short it's well short short about a ball short the montana grizzly defense rises the occasion and gets the ball back for their offense here to start the second half what a great defensive play but boy what a gutsy call by chris fisk in central washington well those are those tough decisions as a coach because yeah i mean you wanna you wanna get that and keep your offense on the field and try to get back in this game but that's the risk if you don't get it all of a sudden here's montana on your side of the 50 chance to go down and 31 to 3 is a whole different thing well the grizzly offense will come out for the first time in the second half with pretty solid numbers in that first half the grizzlies were seven of 16 on passes for 124 yards as we drop back cam's gonna go right to the air and he's got his man wide open out of the backfield the tight end over the right side and a nice grab and run by bryson deming is deming will get a big first down down to the 26. well good start play action cam humphrey makes the right read and because of the play fake watch there's just nobody there the safety comes up continues to come up i'm not sure why instead of covering the tight end in the flat and that's a big gain for montana's offense on the first play of the third quarter for them so the grizz again the fake hannah plenty of time for humphrey and he's got salsa but he just throws it a little bit too far for her salsa to chase down but boy he had him it was the right read he just missed him and and cam hasn't missed much today he's been on target for the most part he's made some nice throws but that one just a little bit wide so the grizz will have a second n10 from the 26 trying to make coach chris fisk pay for the decision to go for it on fourth and short well if you're a competitor ron you have to i mean you you have to understand that they just took a big risk and gave us a chance to really boy put it put a nail kind of in the coffin early here and nice tackle right there cody o'connell just standing osmo up and driving him back after a gain of about three but big hit there by that young man cody o'connell oh boy how the safeties and the linebackers of this unit have really played well the defensive line is doing their job and then these guys are coming up and filling and and tackling well as a coach you gotta love that tackle the form tackling you did their helmet to the side did everything you're supposed to perfect almost like a two-legged takedown on the wrestling mat oprah looking at third and a bunch gonna go to the corner to samuel cameron at cam a little bit of a push off this time they don't get it and he'll get the touchdown as sammy goes to the end zone for the grizzlies i tell you what with being challenged one-on-one samia kim had to be on that sideline and maybe at halftime saying give me a shot if they think they can play me like this close pressed coverage man-to-man no way please give me another shot and that time he went up and got it like he said a little bit of a push off if we can see the replay i don't know if we'll get it on replay but uh he does a i guess a little bit more inconspicuous than the first one this time the ref does not throw the flag and it's a touchdown and as you said coach fisk's big risk does not pay off and the point after by jack cooper is good and the montana grizzlies puts six more up on the board cooper makes it seven as cam finds sammy in the end zone and that man is happy to be playing football again in the silver maroon at washington grizz [Music] and welcome back to washington grizz and grady run us through this because samuel kim does a great job here well it's a double move it's a little quick out and up and the first time he got called on a clear push off it was obvious that time he did a much better job with his hands and not making it off obvious but he just got enough separation and his first touchdown of the season and excited young man right there what a weapon he is for montana buschini kicks it away as he's going to sail this one deep into the end zone and we'll watch it go through as the montana grizzly kicking game continues to shine special teams not that thing that bobby's a little nervous about but so far they've been the star of the game oh he's got to feel very very good i know there was just a lot of question marks and i've talked about how it's been so different so you haven't gotten the chance to prepare your special teams like you normally would going into the season and all of a sudden you have a game in the spring so yeah some question marks there but so far his guys and his units have performed beautifully today on special teams the sun shining for about the third time today seems like every time we come back from a time out the weather's different central washington's had all the sunshine when they're on offense and let's see if they can get it to shine bright on them as they set the screen up and bring it out of the backfield and a great job coming from behind and chasing that down as a michael matthews so the young man that comes from behind and also some help there from mr hill braxton hill from anaconda montana and to help out on the stop well here's your number two linebacker unit you have jana carroll braxton hill michael matthews that are out there and again so much talent you really don't drop off much just gonna keep bringing fresh waves of that front seven in against central washington here comes smith looking to run he's going to shuffle pass that one off and he does a great job getting that out into the hands of daniel johnson and johnson turns the corner but not going to get much as again the grizz defense there and we're seeing more of those deeps in the corners and we see uh kirk reigel there in on part of that stop just seeing some new faces yeah nice play by smith again he's showing what he can do and of course we have no idea the inside knowledge of why he's out there and what the depth chart has looked like but he's done a nice job with the chance that he's been given i think he's showing his his team and his coaching staff that i i can be your starting quarterback all year smith looking at third and six he's had the time but now gonna have to get on his horse and he's not gonna get the first down as he'll get run out by the montana grizzlies as the chase mata bounce hills there also there is jenna carroll and don't forget another one matthews so the three linebackers all there to run him out of bounds yeah coach hulk wanted to see the linebacking group again that was probably the unit that had the most question marks for montana just a lot of young guys guys that have to get better and step up and so probably the the unit that he was going to really evaluate the strongest today's game and i think he's got to be happy with what he's seeing so far well gabe's also ready to add to the highlight reel as he stands back at about the 32 he has big shoes to fill with jerry louie out but he has so far shown that he's up for it as they go to the soccer kick once again i'm going to try to kick it away from him and they are going to kick it out of bounds don't give him a chance to return it and and probably a good idea well i was going to say coach fisk has got to start making some adjustments now because the the return game for montana has just killed his squad let's take a look at those returns it's been kind of a highlight reel of the day well let's go back this was the opening kickoff and they chose just to hey let's play let's compete let's kick it to malik flowers well bad idea because he's a great returner he did it all in 2019 and then gabe let the first one bounce past him and he wasn't gonna do that again so this time he scooped it up and you can see what he did with that so it was two for two so then the next adjustment was they tried to kick it short and pooch it but gabe came up and scooped it up at the 22 and here we go again so montana has just done a great job returning the football today and here's xavier harris we're finally getting to look at him and i'm excited ron to watch this young man they like it they're high on him yeah he's got great speed and obviously his first collegiate carry was not what he was hoping for brought a blitz and he lost three yards but you could see right there that was a nice little first first down gain with a little some quick hips and movement and i'm excited to see what xavier harris can do he's gonna probably get some carries in the second half well he's the positive yardages of grizzly now has he got a couple extra on that one here's a pass to him in the flat with one guy to beat what a great move by harris xavier harris a freshman from oxnard down to about the 42-43 yard line as he takes it down and he's run out of bounds over there by nate perkins well you can see that's the difference osmo's gonna be your big downhill running back you know a lot thicker a lot stronger and then harris is going to come in and boy here's that lightning quick fast back and it's going to give i think montana is going to end up with with two really good backs this spring you know a little bit of that thunder and lightning approach well harris comes in as a freshman and again they're very excited about that young man and he's proven why again back behind it goes behind so sir and the ball not catchable but a good job defensively covering down there for michael chisley well that time cam was just a little bit off i don't know if there was a miscommunication if gabe slid outside and he was expecting him to come inside but he threw the ball uh where he was expecting gabe to be and just miscommunication but cam's been on so far today and has looked pretty good back there in his first official start lake flowers out here is a wide receiver is he getting a chance to get on the field as a receiver they look to go to him cam now going to shuffle out finds his man wide open on the other side he gets it off to ryan simpson and the bozeman native down over the 30 near the 26 yard line for another montana grizzly first down ryan's first catch just a little hitch on the outside and cam came to the left first of all with his reed progression and got forced out of the pocket and simpson was still sitting out there on the right side with his hitch and so wide open because of that delay and was able to make a first down out of it yeah like the decisions made by cam humphrey so far yeah i really look smooth today i think he's going through his progressions really well and i think he's being patient in the pocket i really like how he's how he's played that time a little bit behind he's been off a couple throws but you know as he settles in and gets more comfortable i you know he's cam's going to be a good player for montana and again when you're you're doing this having not played in so long that timing that high speed real action play you're just a little bit behind for sure for sure it definitely takes takes time and man sometimes having that much time to just do it over and over and over again against the same color against your same teammates all the time it's just it's it's hard again there's been a lot of difficulties uh for everyone with this whole thing we've faced but uh football teams as well and there again harris you can see the explosion i i like what i'm seeing i was excited to watch it and boy just this one driver he's getting extended action really exciting he pops for five on this one as he's adding to his stats here on his first game at washington grizzly stadium how about that for some of these young freshmen sean touched on it and set us up well with the the young freshmen that come in they sat out for these 485 days and now they're getting to walk onto the field here at washington grizz well i think it's going to be really interesting to see what happens down the road because you're going to have some classes that get extra years that are kind of backed up you know against each other and so depth and it's just gonna be really interesting to see what happens but there's harris again with the little swing pass just showing you how electric that he's gonna be boy he's got some pop and some real speed as we've heard and again here he is showing his speed but that right on cue the freshman showing us that this young group of players have moved up quickly into the uh the depth chart a lot of freshmen a lot of redshirt freshmen sitting now in those two spots and the grizzlies first and goal the 11 on that grab by harris they're going to give it off and it's going to be osmo around the corner and a great job again by hamilton this young man can just flat out play football from that linebacker position man he's he's the mvp so far on defense and central's defense i mean it's 31 points that are on the board but they've actually played pretty well i mean the return game has killed them and put them really in bad field position but their defensive front has done their job and allowed those linebackers and safeties to come up and make good plays and hamilton has taken advantage of every one of his opportunities thus far today here's where the grizzly struggle down here in the red zone trying to finish in something that they wanted to work on something bobby want to work on as they go back over the middle and a nice grab to malik flowers down to about the six yard line inside the six to the five yeah they've done a nice job with that play of of sitting down in those soft spots in the zone down here in the red zone they've completed that three or four times now uh but you're right i mean it's something that i know you well we all know coach hulk addressed at halftime all right big boys when we get down here now here we go with another third and four this is where we've got to eat and make it pay the grizzlies third and four they can get a first down at the one yard line is cam gonna hand the ball nope he's gonna roll out he's got time and he's got his man and ball gonna be knocked out of there and intercepted no it's still up in the air it's gonna be pulled by osmo into the end zone there's a little circus flare for you on a saturday oh what a what a play you know this is one of those that you're gonna just shake your head about and as a quarterback coach right i'm gonna be upset with cam because he clearly makes the wrong read here but this is sports man sometimes it ends up working out for you know sometimes you make the right play and it doesn't work out for you sometimes you make the wrong play and it works out for you he's gonna end up with a touchdown pass out of this and uh man as we see the replay you'll see what i'm talking about but johnny on the spot nick osmo staying with it makes the catch and goes into the end zone cooper adds the end one i was already calling for the interception because it looked like it was going the other way with central washington and we'll go to break hopefully we'll get a look at that one a little later but the montana grizzlies using the circus to take it to the end zone [Music] and welcome back central washington wildcats trying to figure out what to do i mean you make the play you do what you need to do to knock the ball in the air and the grizzlies still able to capitalize we'll see that in a minute is the montana grizzlies leading here 38 to 3 on your special swx sports saturday here's spring football remember we got another game coming up later on today as the carroll college fighting saints playing college of idaho that's at four o'clock but right now the montana grizzlies lining up to kick it off and and great job so far by buschini the uh young man from helena montana ready to put his foot into it again a little bit of wind behind him and he's gonna squib this one put it down on the turf it's gonna be picked up and brought out by one of the uh big receivers and this guy's a tough young man isaac crichton who will routinely take that one back out to about the 32 but let's go back and look at that touchdown this is this is seriously the circus is in town well you want to you want to teach your quarterback i mean this is a force there's four guys there that is not where he needs to go with the ball and so yeah it ends up working out but uh boy that's a coaching point teachable moment definitely a force the guy in the flat was as wide open as you can be and that's where the ball should have gone but hey sometimes that sports man it works out you could see deming was wide open up top so cam will learn from that he'll be glad that he ended up with the touchdown pass out of it anyways i won't do the whoop whoop whoop but we couldn't do it here we go the long pass is gonna be beyond everybody but we got flags flying all over out there as flags hitting the ground justin ford was on the defense and they're going to call pass interference against the montana grizzlies well the grizzly coaching staff is not happy with it but justin ford was all over it he was woofing a little bit after but tyson rainwater just clapped his hands and said yeah wolf all you want but first down well as a quarterback you have to have that though i mean isn't that i come to girls practice and i watch the corners of the guys that are talking the smack they're because they're out there on an island by themselves they have to have attitude well if you are not yeah you're right ron if you are not a confident young man if you don't believe in your abilities uh you cannot play corner man you are isolated out there all alone and you have to be a man to do it well the penalty takes it out to the 45 and smith right away back in and here's a pass out there in ford this time says uh-huh sure because he strips it from rainwater and uh rainwater just sitting there looking him down as rainwater had that but ford really just hit it just perfect time now oh perfect break you know if you could see the footwork it was just beautiful again this young here it is right here watch justin ford's footwork he just makes a break on it makes his read great job breaks it up there's that attitude gonna like that lemming isn't a quarterback so we do we go back to the guy we expected jj lemming a six five 215 pound redshirt freshman he was a two-time mvp of his conference all-state player in high school and boy he dodges a bullet there and gets rid of one and it looks like almost picked off out there by nash fouch has fouch had a chance at it but how about the pressure put on up front by well now and that's where jj lemming i mean that's your introduction he's a big young man and as you mentioned two-time mvp great player but boy it's a little bit different at this level here they come boy what an adjustment you have to make right away what a great defense for the grizzlies is from linebacker to cornerbacks and safeties they were all in on that one as it brings up a third and ten for lemming lemming through 41 touchdowns his senior year in high school so we know he puts his hip on as he comes out here towards rainwater but he throws the ball at so he sails a little bit and ends up out of bounds but two defenders are three defenders right there for the montana grizzlies well and i was watching him in warm-up warp and he clearly has talent i mean he has a big arm and he was putting some zing on it you can see his skills but again welcome to uh division one fcs college football because that pressure changes everything boy so we're gonna get a kick for the in to kick it away is going to be uh sandberg again is he uh soderbergh van saderberg from olympia washington and looks like gabe highlight reel salsa back there well or is that robbie houck is it robbie robbie hauck is back and he's going to get a chance at it and he's going to take it he's going to get hit right away and bob put on robbie hauck on his first attempt at a return by raccanelli and the montana grizzlies will have the ball at the 21 but we're going to go down to the sidelines on the 21-yard line with sean rainey yeah guys this camp humphrey comes out with this offense just kind of wanted to talk about him and his uh the way that he is kind of you know grown into this starting role because when dom snead graduated from montana he was not the guaranteed starting quarterback as we see actually it's going to be chris brown coming in but when talking to cam grady you know it you played the quarterback position you coach quarterbacks it's unlike any other position in football because only one guy can play on the field at one time and it's hard when you're a quarterback and you're the guy from pretty much the time that you're a little kid all the way up until now and so cam he had to sit out but he and he embraced the competition with dalton sneed last year and he said that this year he's really embraced the competition with chris brown of course they brought in kirk greigel ravi patterson because it was not a guaranteed he was going to be the starting quarterback they wanted to bring in guys to compete with him and he won that starting quarterback job and he's really embraced that competition and i think that he just has a a newfound appreciation for the sport of football and he's really looking forward to as a redshirt senior leading this montana team well he's had good time on the field and now chris brown the young man from bozeman montana his first handoff is going to go to xavier and he gets a nice gain and here comes brown rolling out and they like this young man from bozeman as he gets the ball out in the flat and we'll get a first down out there to malik flowers at about the 39 so a nice pitching catch there from chris brown and here's young man you have some experience around yeah for sure another great class double-a player you can see the talent athletically that he has rolling to his left so hard to do throwing on the run and just nice and easy delivery beautiful ball and sean i agree with everything you said great points proud of cam humphrey and just done a really nice job of embracing the challenge of stepping up competing and being the true starting quarterback coach hauck talked about chris brown though and if there's any quarterback that has really risen and and and challenged in that quarterback room uh to push cam the most it's this young man right here out of bozeman high chris brown done a good job and again i'm going to go back to xavier harris he is clearly showing his talent this is exciting to see a guy that i think can be a kind of a game breaker for montana out of that backfield and just the early signs of number 13 look pretty good see i'm watching him and i'm thinking of the first time we got to see marcus knight right i mean he's electric he's he's doing so many different things catching it running it here he's gonna get another chance to run and xavier does that little stutter and then cuts back again and i think giving you a little quite a bit different i guess approach than you would get out of osmo okay well here's here's what i like to see out of a back leg pairs and of course i just haven't gotten to see him you know sean has been able to watch him in practice and stuff and i don't get a chance with those uh those reps to see but right he's a quick guy he's a fast guy a lot of times those guys will want to dance too much east west make those cuts and then outrun everybody to the sideline but to see a guy like that make the decision when that's not there to put his head down and go forward and that's what xavier's done twice now i like it chris brown out in the flat and a great breakup out there on the defense by dominic weiberg as the ball out in the flat was out there intended for caitlyn white but a good job on defense brings up a fourth and one it's a big decision time for the montana grizzlies yeah not quite as big when you're up 38 to 3 but but still still a decision for hulk but actually uh i'm gonna say it's pretty easy one because you've struggled in these short yardage you're challenging your guys it's fourth and one midfield gotta get it they stay with harris in the backfield and and they're gonna go right to the air and they get it over the top and white has an easy grab down to about the 40-yard line of the wildcats you just again what you talked about sit in that zone find that empty spot in the zone sit down and wait for the ball yeah for sure they've done a nice job that's one play that's really worked well for the offensive both quarterbacks have read it well delivered it on time uh just uh good that's something to build on with your short passing game but again looking at chris brown you know you can't have enough health just think about the health at the quarterback position that montana has struggled with in the last few years with some injuries and so osmo back into the ball game getting the grab for a couple yards but again hamilton there's that guy again he is impressive just all over the field as he comes up makes the stop after a gain of about three i mean osmo's gonna be sick of seeing that guy they've had collisions all day long and a couple times osmo's had a chance to really break yet break into level two but hamilton's been there to stop him just that one guy to beat i'd love to get sean's uh thoughts on on the twos because i know he's had a chance to watch a lot of these young players as we see chris brown showing some mobility he goes out in the flat to his receiver and the defender falls down and coming back and getting the ball out there in the flat for the grizzlies that malik who makes the grab yeah flowers has caught both of those on that play kind of on that outside coming back but boy if you look at chris brown as only a freshman a red shirt freshman so 6'4 215 at this point and no matter what happens i mean he's gonna end up having a chance at having a really nice career uh you know if cam ends up having a great senior year and chris brown just continues to improve but he's looking at a nice next three years for himself nick osmo going to get another shot at is he'll get a gain of about a yard over the right side maybe two but it'll be enough for a first down for the montana grizzlies oh the third quarter winds down now there's a minute and a half to go and i'd like to bring sean back in sean you've had a chance to watch practices watch these twos and these young players you talked about them earlier i want to bring you back in because there's an awful lot of youth getting a big moves on the step chart yeah there certainly is it has been a different year where we are not allowed to be at practice as much as normal so not i would say as a expertise on some of the guys as a normal year but certainly as i was going to mention cole grossman as he gets a catch right there this is one of the guys at the tight end position that i think has some real a real high ceiling as far as the pass catcher goes because this is a guy that's been moved all over the field he kind of started a defense played a little bit of linebacker and kind of an end spot and i think he's found his home at the tight end position here but you guys have mentioned it obviously with xavier harris he just has that extra gear that extra explosiveness and yes he he dances a little bit but he knows when to put his foot in the ground i think what you were kind of mentioning grady was i think that was the biggest thing with a guy that reminds me of that kind of danced a lot was trayvon van you see chris brown with a nice run here into the end zone brown will take it montana grizzlies and going back sean had perfect timing there because grossman who's one of those youngsters catches it and then you come back with brown another freshman who takes it in for the run and the score for the montana grizzlies we've seen the two show that they're as good as the ones well what bobby's wanted to do since he came back in his second tenure as the montana head coach has really built depth that could compete and i think he felt like in his first couple years here this second time back there wasn't enough competition at some spots and so it just doesn't allow for that push those guys have to continue to be on their a game to make sure they stay on the field coach feels like he has that now across the board really at every position that's why he talked about linebacker making sure he saw the same thing and so nobody can be comfortable man you better come to work every day you better improve you better make plays that you're expected to make and even more because if you don't there's somebody breathing down your neck that wants on the football field they're going to review that play to see if he got into the end zone but and we're talking about these youngsters here's carver gilman the redshirt freshman from whitefish i got a chance to watch this young man kick in high school and uh he was pretty impressive there's uh the angle we have on that did he get it in and that's what the officials are looking at i don't know if we have a sideline cam or not a yeah sideline cam an end zone cam to actually see it and yeah it doesn't look like we will so i think what you look for is his foot might have went out on the one right there before the ball touched the pylon so it's kind of tough from those angles i don't know if the officials will have enough it makes a call here we go touchdown yeah i just don't think from these angles there's really enough to change it they called it a touchdown on the field so i'm not sure that they can change it they're seeing what we're seeing right so they don't have another camera they're looking at what uh our great guys on the camera crew have been grabbing for us so here he is carver gilman getting those twos here's a young man that's fighting for that kicking spot is he'll try that point after for the montana grizzlies as the kick is good the montana grizzlies that one more to the board as they jump out in front here at washington grizzly stadium let's bring sean back in here i'd love to talk to sean a little bit more and grady get you in on this the idea that this is exactly going back to sean that idea that bobby's whole focus has been making his twos as good as his wants well really and over the years like when they were running and uh you know in national championship contention it was always you had to redshirt and you didn't really play much your freshman in sophomore year and then you played as a redshirt junior and i think that is what they're really kind of starting to build i mean we're obviously seeing some young guys play now but i think it's really just like you said getting that depth and when we talk about a guy like a chris brown i mean what does it say about him as a redshirt freshman when they brought in some older guys guys with more college experience what does it say about a guy like that where he's kind of risen above them to kind of become this backup quarterback i think he's had a very impressive uh you know spring camp and a very impressive start to his career and probably benefited like we mentioned from a lot of these guys benefited from that that extra year and you go back to that greedy on sean's point if you go back then these guys aren't your typical redshirt freshman right i mean they're a year older yes absolutely and it's all about competition you guys i mean that's that's what it's all about coach hulk does a fabulous job in his practice planning of setting up competition there's competition in every drill everybody knows that again if you're not on your a game if you are not making the plays that are expected of you and even more uh you're not going to be out there very long because somebody's breathing down your neck that wants out there and coach huck i think is feeling really good about the roster depth that he's putting together his uh guys recruiting hard getting out there bringing in talent across the board at every position uh the positions that they were a little bit short in now they've got that competition and that two and three deep and so it's really exciting well we saw a corner there on that tackle so another one of those young players are excited about he made the tackle on special teams when flanagan had problems finding the handle on it so here we come back out and it's going to be lemming again in at quarterback as he's going to come oh man he gets tattooed by seoul and then gets his pass out and the grizzlies are there and what a great job on defense again justin ford showing that attitude and showing he can get it done as they connect that pass out to jojo hillel and no place to go well if you just think about that we're gonna go to the fourth quarter montana grizzlies put the head on as we're done with three on this sw export saturday we're going to the fourth when we get back and welcome back to the fourth here at washington grizzly stadium the grizz out in front and remember the second half belonged to the grizz in 2019 and so far they're making it happen here at last in 2019 when they played they outscored their opponents 286 to 131 and so far it's been all grizz here in this second half but then to try to make something happen and mr lemming as he drops back and he gets rid of one over the top the ball is tipped and almost intercepted and some new faces on the field for the grizzlies that was jackson lee from the free safety get a little help back there with kopeng is that that one yeah that was kobach who was there with him i believe yeah now you're starting to see some threes and again we've been talking a lot about depth and how coach hauck is putting this roster together and guys are competing and again i don't think you're going to see that big of a drop off even as we go to these guys jackson lee a great product out of sentinel high school and moved to safety doing a great job has a great future and your linebackers they we've seen them rotate through quite a bit and and we're getting janet carroll and here comes hill on a blitz as they try to get the pressure on lemming and lemmy's going to air this one out and it's a deep one and it's gonna be picked up by the montana grizzlies weingold with the interception on the long pass that floated for lemming and the grizzlies with another defensive takeaway david kopang makes an outstanding adjustment as a safety yeah you just don't see a safety make this type of adjustment very often i mean this is receiver type drills and skills ball's up there hanging a long time receivers work on this every day but watch this watch how kopeng adjusts i mean he sees it okay he turns over the shoulder makes an over-the-shoulder catch and he's even dealing with a little bit of a cast there on his right arm that is an outstanding play shows you his athleticism not only the adjustment but wearing that cast wow what a play by copay we got so many numbers out there i thought it was five so i'm looking who's five i say rigel i thought graves and and so we get co-paying with the interception just uh all kinds of new numbers out there and something that we were thinking about when we got into this game we might see some of these numbers back at quarterback for the montana grizzlies is chris brown and brown's gonna sit back and wait as he finds his man wide open what a great grab as he pitch off to ryan simpson they know a little bit about each other and simpson takes it down to about the 33-yard line well i tell you do they know a little bit about each other something you imagine you know you see players at this level and obviously they are so good in high school to be at this level but imagine trying to stop those two guys playing on the same team in high school just outstanding you don't have to imagine you had to try to do it you had to try to do it and it was unsuccessful attempt but boy chris brown looks really good looks confident in the pocket just a nice job of stepping up right there and pressure coming just delivers a strike xavier back in the backfield but chris going to roll out again getting a little time and he just misses simpson here's something if you're you're sitting over there with the with coach hauken company on the and rosie you're saying wow look at the we have the twos here and the talent positions from the receivers to the quarterback the running back you got to be smiling pretty bright if you're a girl's coach right now well you do because you know that you go back to practice now and what's good now is they can get into game week prep because right we're back here next week ron portland state's coming in so now you can go into that film room tomorrow and you can go to practice on monday and you can say hey you are not executing like we need you to so that number two is going to get more time that number three is going to get more time and but it really forces guys to just buckle down and focus and work and that's what you want in your depth chart xavier harris just wouldn't go down on that one with a spin move a jump step he just has so many different moves it's tough to actually pin him down he doesn't give you an easy target well i tell you what i i'm really impressed and i think this might be one not like you have to make any moves yet but if there's one guy that needs to feel some breathing on his back it might be osmo because xavier harris is uh has really shown well so far here he goes showing big time as he cuts the outside harris gonna stand up say okay we'll go out of bounds right here at about the 12-yard line first down grace well let's go down to sean that's a great call is sean you watch terrace and you got a chance to watch harris in spring ball and this young man they're pretty fired up about oh without a doubt and especially with the injury to marcus knight you're gonna need all the the guys below him to step up and like kind of grady was talking about it's always good to in the running back room to have a little thunder lightning have guys that have different contrasting styles and you get the power with nick osmo they have other power guys and like a drew turner and then as you see keelan white gets a touchdown from chris brown what a pitch a beautiful pitching catch there is another thing you got to sit back and just smile when you're sitting there looking at chris brown thinking this young man can just flat out pitch it out there and keeping white around a perfect route well it's so exciting this is just a zone it's a three deep zone so you're just going to run double seams split the free safety and it's up to your quarterback to make the right read and chris not only makes the right read but he looks the free safety off gets him moving to the left and then he comes back to that seam in the right and there's just nobody around so great job by chris brown good throw and yeah he's showing very well everything that coach house said about his progress as a quarterback has been proven true thus far carver gilman puts it through and will take us to break the montana grizzlies pulling it away here in the second half just like 2019 as they lead on this swx sports saturday so you enjoying grizz football don't forget we have more grizzly football next saturday at 11 a.m on abc montana and swx billings when the grizz hosts the vikings of portland state and a non-conference matchup of familiar foes it's your last chance to catch the grizzly football team before september so join grady shawn and myself next saturday at 11 o'clock on abc montana and swx billings and i guarantee ya i've had enough hadn't had enough i mean this is exciting to be back to football it's been a while it's been too long you got to do it in high school but to get back to this level and this fun is just again exciting short kick and a fair catch made at the 30 for the wildcats it's a little extra curricular going on out there they're going to step in and stop that let's go back we're talking about all this youth and all these new kids coming in and all these youngsters what does that mean and sean jump in here with us what does that mean for these uh fresh high school seniors right now in the recruiting classes of the future because you're going to keep your program full with guys not leaving or will they leave yeah i mean that's certainly going to be an interesting thing to monitor as we move forward because i think a lot of people think when we get this covered year and the extra year of eligibility a lot of people just automatically kind of think of the seniors because you want them to be able to play their senior year etc but when you move down the list it affects every single class and with montana basically now having two freshman classes i talked to coach hauck about this and he said i mean this is going to be an issue moving forward for the next three four years and trying to figure out your numbers as a football program and there's kind of two different philosophies with it he said when he talked to a lot of different coaches throughout the college coaching landscape is like one you just bring in your normal classes like you do every single year and then you just figure it out within the program from there or he said you can just really limit this next year's incoming class and then try and you know and then your numbers will be kind of more even from that standpoint so it's going to be very fascinating to see how each college program kind of handles all the differences in scholarships and numbers with that extra year i want to get your take on that after you watch uh a nice run by fine again he comes around that gets the first down to get out of bounds there at about the 41 42 yard line but for my high school coach you're coaching these youngsters that are seniors in high school maybe juniors saying what's the opportunity does it limit their opportunity coming out of high school and there's some kids there you think could play at the next level but there's no opening for sure and that's what changed this year in fact as there were certain programs that didn't get to play where everybody's gonna get another year as sean was explaining and all of a sudden that we just don't have an opening we don't have a scholarship for you so all those guys now that maybe would have been scholarship players are now walk-on players and so as sean said across the country it's going to be interesting to see how different coaches handle it strategically and again we've all had to adjust in so many ways in our lives with covid and here we are talking about football programs specifically but that is definitely going to be something that as we watch play out it's going to be really interesting i think one thing shawn to bring up is college coaches like coach hauck and his staff they have to make some decisions within their own programs from year to year as guys just you know what we can't keep you on scholarship because we have guys now that have come in that are better and we're just log jammed and there's just going to be a lot of tough things that happen well absolutely and i think the other wrinkle to throw into this guys is i think we are very close to the ncaa allowing just free transfers for players i don't think that we're that far off from that i know like right now a lot of players get that one free transfer and so i think the player movement and the ability for players to go from school to school is only going to you know get more and more um and i think i don't think we're that far off from the ncaa almost allowing free transfers for players as well so that's going to be another thing to kind of monitor as far as just how college um coaches and their and their staff kind of put together their whole program well jj lemming trying to put together a comeback here as he needs 11 as he swings it out into the flat and unable to get around the corners the grizzly defense does its job and gets him out of bounds good job over there defensively and going back to that as you take a look at that as central washington has seen i guarantee you their star running back isn't moving down he's going up somebody else out there wants him right and i know like sean said i think you were trying to choose the right adjective sean and i think you did you were pretty uh politically corrupt there i think that the transferring i would put the adjective that it's going to get worse i'll step out and say that because i think it's going to create such a mess i think a lot of kids are going to have dreams where well i don't really like what i'm seeing right now here so i'm going to go here and man that doesn't always work out and it just gets real difficult and so yeah it's going to be interesting it's going to get robbed here's robbie with his chance to say i can do it too hey dad look at this out to midfield on the return and robbie how can his second punt return as a grizzly return man out to the 50 and that'll take us to a timeout the montana grizzlies where it's snowing again of washington chris with the sun shining on the grizz on the scoreboard they're up 52-3 on this swx sports saturday and welcome back the wind blowing again the snow flying here at washington grizzly stadium the fans bundling up but a little warm inside with the uh happiness that their grizzlies are back on the field here at washington korea's as they bring it out and the montana grizzlies chris brown is going to hand this one off as we see coming around the corner that malik flowers he's gone and he's got one guy to beat to the end zone and he will touchdown grizzlies flowers [Applause] he doesn't always have to get the ball on the kickoff he can do it other ways oh boy i tell you what the grizz have a lot of weapons and we've seen them used in a lot of different ways but malik flowers and gabe souls are two of the most explosive players on this team that's why they're both returners you've seen it in the return game and now you've seen it on offense from both of them and coach rosenbaum offensive coordinator is doing a nice job at just obviously finding ways to get his guys touches that can do things with the football well blocked on the edge give those guys credit cole grossman the tight end that sean talked about going to be very talented player he leads the way on the edge and another touchdown for montana although it looks like they're going to review it did his knee hit looked like his knee might have hit the ground um well we'll have to we they'll be watching the replay along with us but it looked like his knee might have hit the ground outside of the end zone and that's what they're going to look at right there yeah yeah watch watch folks good job by our camera knees are down remember when the knees go down where is the ball and so that left knee is down clearly good job by the camera in that but the booth right there sorry the truck doing a good job with our replays knee was down balls at the one so coach hawks probably not disappointed with that malik flowers is because his touchdown comes coach elk likes it because now his short yardage gets a little more work well he's going to bring out that short yardage again this is another one of those nice things is they have all new wide bodies on the front up in front there and they're gonna uh bring back out that full bach uh trace latexier the fullback is he's gonna go in he's gonna punch a hole for harris to follow and he'll get the touchdown so harris adds his name to the grizzly scorecard as he takes it in from the yard out well like i said if you're coach hulk that's not bad because getting those short goal line reps those are tough to do i mean you try to do it in practice but man those are injuries waiting to happen sometimes and you go goal line period and it is just a tough physical period so to get a live game look like that where your offense gets to do it that's good stuff well gilman and again for the point after he's going to have as much scoring as as the other kicker says he gets an opportunity to add one more on for the montana grizzlies the young man from whitefish put his toe into it and it's good the grizz had another one thanks to malik's run and the finish by xavier they're up 59-3 with snow flying on this swx sports saturday [Music] and threes have been doing very well and now well it's time to kick it back on over to the wildcats as they're looking for something to shine on now they're looking something to maybe put something to take home that they can be happy with yeah exactly you try to just finish well stay with it uh coach letting carver gilman kick off here instead of buschini against the wind so it's going to hang up there and a chance for his kickoff team to run down and cover which i know coach halk is not upset with as well getting those guys some reps but you know ron one thing that i want to throw out here and sean if you're still listening coach how could not give his guys enough credit and i think we need to mention it now i want you to think about it folks we we've mentioned 485 days enough you're probably sick of hearing it but think about it from a player's perspective that is a long time football is a tough tough sport it is such a grind you get so many reps that are tough and physical for only really what 11 games the year well now 485 days of football workouts and weight room and spring balls and no games and he has just been so proud of his guys and how they've handled this experience and just hanging in there and continuing to work and maintaining a great attitude so can't credit his guys enough for that and how they've handled it and now i'm so happy for him to finally get a chance to play yeah absolutely as we see a couple of former missoula boys and levi janicaro and jackson lee get in on that tackle and when i talked to cam humphrey the other day he kind of mentioned that about his offensive line and the skill guys as well saying like i'm excited to be the starting quarter i'm just excited like because all of those guys continue to put in the work the entire time and i think a lot of people like i played every single sport growing up and football is the one where game day is where you just you get all the benefits of all the hard work that you put in and a lot of that hard work some of it is not enjoyable you gotta you know football is an absolute grind without having that that payment of game day it makes it really difficult so i think you do have to get a lot of credit to a lot of these guys who have put in continue to put in that work throughout all of this extra time without you know that that cherry on top being game day well and i think another thing shawn to add to that is that they got to watch or had to endure watching a lot of their peers get to play as a lot of leagues around the country decided okay let's go ahead and play they didn't get to and so it just added to it can you imagine grinding while you know some of your buddies are playing across the country and you don't get to so yeah coach ouch was really proud and i think it just speaks highly to the way these kids have handled it and happy for them they can finally play today i gotta break in did you just see that play by ford yes is that amazing he's came off that corner and just took the feet right now from under the running back as lozolo didn't get a chance to turn the corner well you think about this defense you know how how coach hauck has bolstered it i mean you have two transfers now from the university of arizona that are starting out there i mean right they're not out there right now obviously but with the number ones you've got some guys from oregon state that are going to be in that in that secondary and then ford from louisville so man what what a job he's done at just bringing in some real good talent to make that defense even stronger we got a flag on the punt is seltzer makes a fair catch but i think you're gonna get a i think was lee who came through there and uh jackson lee i think got the kicker as he let that one go i think you're gonna see uh the wildcats get the ball back and it is it's against the grizzlies let's go back to that john because if as you look around and the teams that are dropping out i i know bobby was predicting this the teams would drop out of this conference play in the spring but you're watching them play and you don't get to that has to be a little frustrating yeah i think it's it was a little bit frustrating for the players a little bit frustrating for the fans a little bit frustrating for everybody i mean obviously montana would have they wanted to play in the fall obviously that was not um going to be an option and so yeah it is tough when you see the rest of the country kind of going but as you see it and when i when coach help comes in to do our grizzly sports interviews he was showing me this text chain with some of these other coaches and all of them and how difficult the spring has been because there's been constant cancellations and things like that so it's almost been better that montana montana state kind of sat out in the spring and then they're able to just for montana you get to pick and choose kind of these two spring games that you want and it's kind of gone off pretty flawlessly this spring for montana and with that the montana program is being touted around the country is doing it the right way i mean other coaches other programs are saying hey this is the right way to playing these two games saving yourselves getting the playing time in and i know coach hauck has has been getting a lot of attention for making the right decision i think the other thing too to come to realize about this spring for montana is they want to be nationally ranked and nationally relevant when it comes to the fall season and when you get to see like a weaver state that's out there playing now and they're able to showcase so all of the voters and all the people when they're leading into the fall are going to have a look at what they are montana is able to put that on film against central washington and again next week against portland state so these games are pretty important as far as being ranked early on in the season going into the fall because you can say that pre-season rankings don't really matter and blah blah blah but if you're ranked inside the top 10 to start the season that gives you an advantage nationally and then that will help you as long as you can continue winning with seeding later on in the season and trying to be in that national championship contender which is what montana wants to be at lemon gonna come back out of the penalty as he rolls around and looks for his man going to get the ball out of bounds but grady i want to get you in on this conversation because as you take a look at that getting into the top 10 to start in the preseason is important because it's tough to climb there especially if you're down on the bottom 20 you know 20 to 15 somewhere in that area it's very important for montana to show good in these two games because that's the only way anybody's gonna know what they have exactly and i think sean that's what you're alluding to with the wisdom of coach houck and doing it the right way like you said ron because without that 2020 uh those games to go on for the rate i mean they don't know the committee i mean they don't really know they don't have enough to go on you got to go back to 2019 and there's been so many changes and so much time and so getting started in that top 10 this year is going to be huge it's always huge but this year more so than ever either meyer making a nice stop over there on the side on the zolo as he tries to roll the corner brings up a third and about seven and as you look at this right now for the montana grizzlies uh next week you get central washington here you got next week you bring portland and you and i may and sean we all made the road trip to portland for that game in 2019 and uh it was a two-ray show he went home and just had a great performance but then you turned around as well sammy kim had that big 76-yard touchdown grabbing that game so that's a game against a very good opponent and sean that that's a game that could really say a lot to the rest of the country yeah portland state's gonna be pretty good this year and they got a really tough quarterback who i mean he took a lick from dante olsen in that game that i didn't think he was gonna get up and he took a ton of shots and he also after the game said he was battling flu-like symptoms during that game so he they got a tough quarterback they got some talent on that team it's gonna be really cool to see another big sky team come into washington grizzly stadium because it's going to feel just a little bit more real a little bit more you know legit and yes we can then we can kind of more uh directly compare how montana is doing but before i toss it back up to you guys i want to give some credit to a lot of the fans here because it is it's pretty cold it's been cold all day and i think they've been so excited to get some football that it is 59 to 3 and really not a lot of them have left the entire side here is all still here supporting their grizzlies so been pretty cool to see the fans stick around for this one i agree with that one sean and we're glad the fans stuck around on tv as well here on swx statewide as we're proud to have you on board the grizzlies out in front getting the ball back with 5 54 to play on this special spring swx saturday now coming up today at four o'clock we have more college football for you here on swx this time from the frontier conference college of idaho makes the trip up to capital city of helena to take on the fighting saints of cairo college led by sophomore running back matthew burgess tune in to swx montana today at four o'clock for frontier conference spring football as we're back to the washington grizzlies stadium another quarterback into the ball game for the montana grizzlies as we'll get the ball snapped to rigel as he'll hand the ball off and and uh ryan ryan out of helen yeah he's in there now at the running back and again now we're down the depth chart a little bit more some of these guys are getting a chance to play at the end of this game which is good get these guys some reps also as rigel well once again set up aren't some behind him as montana grizzlies bringing a whole lot of new numbers and arson gonna go to the left side he finds a little bit of room over there and gets a yard or two gets back what he lost and let's bring sean back in here because you know a lot of people have been asking we've seen a lot of uh social media discussion about who's wearing 37 when we come into this year for the grizz defense and noticeably missing from the field today and sean you've been kind of paying attention to this one yeah well first off i gotta correct you a little bit because it technically doesn't have to be a defender one thing that people don't really realize is it it can be somebody on the offensive side of the ball obviously traditionally it has been on the defensive side of the football and yeah we don't have a 37 and i don't think we'll get one till the fall although it's so funny when i ask people within the program either they say they don't know or they're kind of tight-lipped about it and so i don't think we're going to see a 37 this spring just like we're kind of not we're not seeing the new uniforms today which i thought we were going to get to see the new the new threads today but it looks like they're going to save that to the fall so i think we're going to save 37 to the fall as well but it'll be curious to see uh you know who gets it i think you know uh jace lewis robbie hulk you have the demings i mean there's a ton of montanans on this roster um but personally i mean i think jace lewis is uh you know one of the guys that is certainly well deserving a walk-on from class b townsend has turned out to be you know one of the best players on this defense and just a really tough physical player and as a senior certainly would be a very deserving guy and you know whoever wears that uniform of course has to be a montana uh native and they have to be someone from montana and we've seen some great ones over the years haven't we oh for sure and you know as sean said of course the original number 37 was a fullback so of course it does now is craig paulson so yes it does not have to be a defender now what happened was the great timmy hauck who i was so privileged to play with and arguably one of the greatest montana players of all time uh really took it to new heights and made it kind of what it is as far as being that prestigious number to wear and i think that's when it became kind of that defensive you know a little bit more on the side of the defense but yeah it originally started with craig paulson at at uh as a fullback on the offensive side so it'll be interesting to see who dawns number 37 when the fall comes around when john hit a good point there as we get another pass from tower and sit down the fight can't hang on to it but john the idea that it can be on the offense and there is quite a debate about it always being on the defense and and wanting it moved around to the other side you know get all these offensive players that are saying hey why doesn't go to the other side of the ball well i'm saying it's been on the the defensive line for a while it'd be kind of cool to get it out into the uh you know linebacker maybe even to the secondary here in a little bit because yeah it's been on the defensive line for a little bit but it is just it's such a cool tradition um and it's really awesome that montana does it and i know a lot of other teams and stuff when they're coming in it's something that they notice as well they're always you know other coaches and stuff are talking about oh he must be good he's the new you know number 37 and things like that and i know it's a it's a big honor for all the the players that are selected that get to wear that number as well so obviously it's something that's also big for the fans so obviously something worth keeping track of who gets the 37 gets to pass it on and they usually will you know talk with you know teammates and and staff and people and you know sometimes it's like collective decision but ultimately it is the player that is wearing 37 gets to pass it along to somebody else i want to make sure we pointed that out yeah well i think that's that's the culture to me what makes it so special is that that player gets to decide who he's passing that number on and it just makes the decision i think that much more meaningful because obviously you're going to pick a guy that meets all the credentials but that's going to carry that thing proudly and continue to do it the service that it deserves so pretty special tradition and uh yeah it'll be fun to see who ends up wearing it when we get to the fall zolo on the carry there and ryan terrell the uh young man from missoula montana getting in on a stop there and up front as well for the grizzlies and on the stop was henry news i think guys too uh alex hertlberg is in the game at left defensive end for montana just an incredible story obviously he's going in there he's got one arm and he is put in a lot of work and is a very talented kid and as you see him number 55 there flying down and getting in on the pile there just really awesome to see him get his first action as a montana grizzly that is a great story and sean you've spent a lot of time covering that you have a lot of background on this young man i mean he's just an incredible kid i mean and he is if you put on his high school tape i mean he is he has an explosive get off and is one of the twitchiest defensive players that that i've seen that that they get coming out of high school obviously when you're flying around the edge and grady could probably talk about this better than i can but you know he will have a little bit of a disadvantage not being able to use two arms to kind of fight those offensive linemen but this kid is an absolute incredible athlete and he also has some awesome weightlifting videos that i mean this kid is a beast in the weight room and getting in on a tackle right there so alex hurlburt making some plays well you're right john when i watch this highlight tape coming out i mean the only reason honestly that he's not an easy division one player you know an fbs guy is you know because of that but man here he is at the fcs level which is amazing enough and you're right he's a freak when you watch his high school tape it is just crazy so what a great story of a young man just persevering and working hard and you know i mean anytime we as humans want to make any kind of excuses there's always great examples like that for us to look at and say what what do i have to complain about let's be thankful with with where i'm at well we're all thankful that we have football back here washington chris is one of a minute to go and uh kick going away again and salsa is gonna try to chase it down and get away from it and it's gonna get a good roll for the wildcats what a great kick and a nice roll for them as it rolls down inside the 10-yard line with the montana grizzlies with 35 seconds left here in the spring game let's talk guys about this game it's it the excitement of getting back to the field the excitement of being here and the idea that we're back to football and getting a chance in the spring will we see spring games in the future will we see teams or the ncaa for that matter allow spring games what's your thought on that well i've heard that it's something that the ncaa is contemplating and it's and i think it's a good idea you know instead of finishing with your traditional inner squad game why not allow teams to have the choice to play somebody around the country i just think it's so good for so many reasons it's good for fans it's good for coaches it's way better for the players i think it'd be something that the ncaa should really look at sean i mean i would agree and if it's something where it could generate revenue as well and and you could have a packed washington grizzly stadium on a normal what would be a spring game against another opponent i mean why wouldn't you do it well the montana grizzlies went into victory formation and they will walk off the field with the victory here to start out this spring of 2021 against the opponent they were scheduled to start the fall of 2020 central washington's wildcats as the montana grizzlies showing the depth and definitely the talent that everybody's been talking about is the grizzlies walk up field the big win here today 59-3 anything on this game stand out to you i mean other than special teams were amazing yeah they were amazing and i think when it's all said and done coach halk has to really like how his guys came out and performed all the adversity that they've faced and he's proud of how they've handled it they finally got to play a game and i think he can't be happier really with where they're at let's let's take a look at the play of the game as we take a peek here at the player of the game i would have to be cam humphrey yeah i did a really nice job proud of him and working so hard stepping up and saying yeah i'll take on all comers in the competition to be the starting grizzly quarterback and i just played a really nice game today delivered the ball on time i thought he was good with his progressions very accurate for the most part and uh you know it looks like grizzly's offense is going to be in good hands behind cam humphrey cam humphrey the player of the game play the game almost has to be osmo's interception or reception for a touchdown that was that was quite entertaining but we want to thank you for joining us here and remember again this afternoon four o'clock college football continues on swx and uh statewide we're gonna have frontier conference football coming your way uh guys thank you to the crew thanks to everybody for sticking with us it's so good to get back to football and get back together again and get out and enjoy what montana gives us and here we go the grizz doing what they do gotta love it thanks for joining us everybody for sean rainey for grady bennett i thank you for spending this day with us the montana grizzlies we'll be back next saturday we'll be back with them here on swx as they walk out of the stadium today with a 59.3 victory thanks for being with us on s w x
