today Holycross will make their first NCAA appearance in ten years Monmouth finished the season sporting a number 11 ranking in the coaches poll but both the Crusaders and the Hawks look for their first FCS playoff win the FCS championship season starts now [Music] welcome to the FCS playoffs on ESPN three first-round matchup as the Holy Cross Crusaders the Petrie League champions take on the Monmouth Hawks the Big South champs here's a look at our FCS bracket first round play at the bottom of the screen the winner here moves on to face the number two overall see James Madison in the second round next weekend [Music] hi everybody I'm Trey bender alongside the former NFL and Penn State defensive lineman toyoko Jackson glad you're with this couple Conference champs squaring off here and teams that have had breakthrough seasons trying to get to the second round yeah both teams come in playing their best ball and that's exactly what you want during this time of year it's the playoffs single elimination we're gonna go home it just doesn't get any better than this the common denominators for these two opportunistic defenses and they both love to run the football yeah and for Holy Cross it starts with Jacob Dobbs the rarest of all freshman because he's consistent every single week and that's why he's up for the freshman of the year in the nation and he's gonna be trying to stop probably what is the FCS best offensive player of the year watch these highlights because he is terrific leads a team in rushing and the entire nation in rushing with 1668 yards when I watch them I think of Christian McCaffrey because they say gonna do it all inside outside catches the football I am super excited to watch him work today now there are playmakers all over the football field and on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker day client Grimes makes a bunch of plays yeah and Grimes finally healthy for the first time in his career has put together a full season that's been a real problem for opposing back fields because when he hits you pull he you go backwards he's a terrific tackler and he's gonna be trying to tackle the guy on the right side of your screen Dominique Kosair who is electric as well he can take it to the house from anywhere on the field he runs inside outside equally well he catches the football - we've got two explosive and dynamic playmakers in the backfield who will be dueling to go deep in the playoffs on this field today who could do it better postseason is here the first ever playoff game at Kessler Stadium a trip to James Madison and the FCS playoff second round on the line Crusaders and Hawks kickoff next from Monmouth the fourth meeting all-time between these two this one in the postseason as Holy Cross at Monmouth square off here at Kessler Stadium it's a chilly windy but dry day here no rain in the forecast late November here in the Garden State and an excellent day for football with a trip to the second round on the line as you look at the veteran coach Kevin Callahan Big South Coach of the Year Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year finalist and Bob Chesney in his second season at the Health Patriot League coach of the year also a Robinson finalists a veteran and a young guy and they're very successful at what they do Holy Cross will kick it off Monmouth with their explosive offense will have a chance to make a statement here on the home turf in the early stages that's mat mascara the senior from Middletown New Jersey he has a teed up win can't be a factor here in this part of the country and if they pick the outside kick right before we get started here well I'm not I'm going to open it all up miss the playoffs Trey [Applause] and now to be Cody Wilkinson kickin it array and over a B it will be returnable across the 20 and stacked up at the 25-yard line is Eddie Morales Monmouth goes to work they are RPO play-action they're a tempo team it all starts with Kenji Behar Payton Award finalist Big South Offensive Player of the Year he makes him tick he's an excellent quarterback why because he gets the ball to all of his guys you cannot key on one receiver because he'll spread it around and if all things don't work that way just handed at number 25 but this mehar kid really a terrific quarterback is coming his own in the strip here they love how he sees the field those the game so well as they handed out to Corral and right away he's been in the backfield good play up front there by bent and Whitley the first team all patriot n and they're gonna need Bentley to do that often he was the on back player on the backside he came down the line flat and got a TfL in the first play doesn't get me better than that he can run with running backs and he could see her head from the get-go how dangerous he can be they think he could be one of the best FCS defensive ends by the time his playing career is over loss on that first play well high roll left away from pressure under duress throws on the run and the catch is made by Lahti more short of the first down let's take a look at her impact players and we just saw moore who's a speedy speedy player they don't get to him in a variety of ways because he's a big play waiting to happen before the Crusader deep Riley is the best safety in the Patriot League and I expect him to introduce himself to mr. Moore on a regular basis today third down they need about four to pick up a first down here on the opening possession just underway FCS first round play on the road to Frisco Texas the hard and almost intercepted that was into the hands of lamp door and the sophomore almost had a pick they'll have to punt the football well in games like this you want to make those interceptions we get opportunity but I think they fooled bahar I think he thought they was man coverage they were in sown and Liam Duran just watched the quarterbacks eyes broke on the ball and boy you had a great opportunity to make a pick guys take advantage now every single miscue and mistakes get amplified in the playoffs brian koz with just his 25th putt their offense has been that good as you look at Asante that deep to receive and that ball is blocked that'll bounce to towards the sideline and a big special teams play by Holy Cross and don't have another bomb inside of the field could you start any better all right they're three and out and then a blocked punt to set your offense up on the plus side of 50 just doesn't get any better than this and he comes through unblocked great job of not roughing you pick a spot in front of the punter tre to pick that ball off the foot excellent job CLEC team Nagle got in there the junior with a big special teams block and what a start for the Crusaders and they'll go to work on the 48 yard line Tom Connor dig and Hart the junior first year starter has settled down second team all-conference this year they like the way he's progressed gotten better all year and that's what you want to see again we talked about how the teams playing that best ball at this time of year digging hardest planting his best time best ball this time - thanks to cozier goes over the middle and it's incomplete that was a little bit behind ie Rosati catchable though would have better first down yeah right off the bat you see the RPO Holy Cross loves the RPO sand they got a run and a pass on every single formation and watch them pull a ball out and there's a slant it's there for you just put it out in front of receiver too far behind them they'll come back to that play because I hear you can really make it happen over the middle this is a team that would love to spread the ball around RPO play-action the screen pass to relieve pressure could be part of the package here against a good mind with defense second down and 10 for the 48 hand up cozier cozier but the speed inside the 40 bounces off the tackler and he's finally dragged down at the 30 yard line there's that blazing speed for the Payton Award finalist [Applause] second down run after incomplete passes football one-on-one and they've got some money to be made on the outside and the terrific blocking is really just nothing there I mean you just run in a daylight because the blocking was so good they got a three wide receivers open up the box made of the easy running Lane for cozier 17-yard pickup for the senior from Milford mass they'll give it to cozier again working the right side spins away from the tackler and knocked out the 26 impact players a year Asante is probably the best freshman receiver they've ever had it holy cross and you saw him on a slant had him open at that point and take a look at free safety Anthony Budd when you get an opportunity now needs just one interception has set the Hawks single-season record those two guys will be dueling over the middle all day long santé was sprinter speed ahead does cuz here we've seen that here in the early stages on second down degenhardt to the sideline it's been sir Gilliam with the catch and he moves it inside the 25 third and short coming up as that was a play where they tried to get it to the outside quickly to Gilliam bubble screen but their ball is gonna come out quicker when you have a bubble screen in the quarterback pumps waits and hesitates it allows the defense to react up and get off blocks I like to play this on it got to execute a little faster to have a better opportunity to get downfield third and four diggin Hart's dad Chris and 86 grad played football to Holy Cross continuing the tradition looking for score here first drive under pressure ace back at the 32 yard line right up the gut Kurt Armour the junior tackle got it well there's no better pressure than right after good pressure like you said no quarter but can no quarterback can withstand that sort of heat and 6 to 288 pounds this senior comes in and rocks the house of Connor do God but I love the stunts there's a stud up front confused the offense of lime and the wrapper came free that's what you need to set up a fourth and long yeah it's gonna bring in Derek Eng who's an excellent kicker sophomore from Las Vegas 11 of 16 on the air as long as 48 and this one will be at 48 yards from the left hash mark to try to put them on the board and they snap it to Inge and he's going to punt it they cross it up and punt the football and that one rolls inside the 15 and would be down at the 11 yard line scoreless underway here at CAA FCS championship first round play from New Jersey [Music] and and we're back and I want to show you a great tan stunt watch number 99 Nick shoemaker beater penetrator he's the guy still left of screen see him penetrates the back of the offensive guard and there's the rapper armor when you penetrate you knock off offensive lineman he was not able to pick up the rapper Curt armors a beneficiary of the great work by shoemaker and it's team defense and a lot of people talk about skill position players being the guys who catch the ball trade but it's a skill to run these offensive defensive line situations because you got to practice them to get on the same Accord great job by the mom or defense to get holy cross off the field they're number 24 at FCS and third down D and they step up there to force the punt and the Hawks have it back at their 11 yard line second series they run with Guerrero straight ahead and he's up to the 16 yard line this guy a sprinter on the track and field team at Monmouth his freshman year played football as well it's gotten bigger and tougher and become a true football player yeah he's been able to stay healthy he's gotten in the weight room track guys are generally they're fast we know that but they generally can't take the penalty he's got in the weight room gotten bigger stronger 6.5 per carry give the 25 in such an offensive well 100-yard games for Guerrero he'd get the call here the left side and up to the 20-yard line close to the first a little bit shy he averages 6.5 per pop as he is nearing the record in terms of school yardage rushing very close 14 touchdowns a 139 rushing yards a game that leads the FCS he has been incredible but this is playoff football right and obviously Holy Cross knows exactly what mommoth wants to do they want to get to 25 I think they're gonna force Kinsey Behar to beat them third down and a yard from the guy gorilla straight ahead and that will give him the record the most rushing yards in Monmouth history a first down up to the 32 yard line yeah you've you've got to find a way to get eight in the box and of course mama doesn't want you to do it but they're one short and look to cut back to vision this guy runs stronger inside he's not very big Trey it's 510 190 but like McCaffrey and I talked about him in the open mic McCaffrey he runs a lot tougher and a lot stronger between attackers approaching 1700 yards rushing now the single-season record holder for the bottom up Hawks first half - 32 yard line it sent a player in motion that's Lonnie more from his wide receiver position and he stretches it out to the 37 yard line they couldn't come at you in a lot of ways more a slack guy but very fast yeah Jeff Gallen said we won't get the ball to him in a lot of different ways right we're gonna get the speed sweeps jet sweeps the pop passes bubble screens he's dynamic and he's super fast as you says you gotta get the ball to him in an open field not very big a lot of these guys out here on very good but this speed if you could get them in the right situations and right matchups they can burn you five yards on that jet sweep second and five at the 37 for the Hawks play-action to the sideline and they go to that Treadway and Treadway and run out of bounds after a short gain at the 39 yard line Treadway their third leading receiver he has 31 catches this year so that's a smoke screen we called a smoker out when the receiver steps back and catches the ball right now you'd like to do that against man coverage and have one on one blocking out that you beat one guys a house call that's really good defense my Holy Cross to make a tackle in space Kevin Callahan the only head coach in school history 64 years old 27 years at the helm one of his best teams this year on third down pressure coming to the sidelines it's incomplete they brought the heat that time as he tried to deliver under duress it's fourth down - how about the coverage from Joe lang and when you're playing man the man you want to force the quarterback to make a perfect throw took away the inside throwing Lane that ball had to be perfect with his position didn't panic didn't get a P I forced a perfect throw and Behar couldn't make it so both defenses stepping up bringing mixing the pressure game with solid play against the run as the Hawks will put it away for the second time with Ryan cost first time he had his punt blocked gets this one away from the 27 yard line a wobbler kids it away from Smith who watches it bounce the 20 and a kind role for the box inside the 10-yard line 748 to go opening quarter sofa here from Monmouth and Holy Cross nothing on the board so far from New Jersey [Music] Crusaders on the Hawks scoreless in this FCS first-round playoff game all routes pointing to Frisco Texas and the championship and this Holy Cross team is seasoned partly because they this is their eighth road game this does not faze them they have gone into some hostile environments and been successful this year and they have built a toughness that you can win with them you know in the playoffs oh you run the football don't turn it over you're not intimidated by a hostile crowd and this is a place where mom if Julie doesn't lose right I want to say 16 and one in their all time in this Stadium so when Holy Cross is built for this and I like the body language that come out with tray they they are ready to play there's no question about that effective Hut by cost that except the Crusaders inside their 10 yard line they'll start this series from the 8th two receivers to the right Dagan Hertz gonna throw that way and it's incomplete he wanted Spencer Gilliam out there in the flat but this is a team that had a road win at Lehigh they were dominant at Fordham and one of the great seasons in their history 124 years of football at Holy Cross yeah and head coach Bob says he talked about when you go on a road you forced to beat him hotels with with you with your players with your family and Brees them together it helps them really hone in on what they got to do the next day he loves going on the road to play football games on second ATandT degenhardt slant pattern and that is caught close to the first down he goes right back to Gilliam their big play receiver in the sophomore from San Antonio right at the stick close to a first down now watch the arm watch him drill this ball him drive the ball between two defenders that ball has got to come out on time or on target or you're risking an interception on that slant between two defenders beautiful throw by digging hard and it is good enough for a first down as they move the chains now at the 18 yard line love how Patrick Murphy is mixing these calls up right now they're going off-script ready to eat they stripped to first 12 to 15 plays and so far it's just been a beautiful job whose ear to his right fix it to it those intercepted picked up by heaven pal the captain the senior with a huge play at Monmouth is it business went to the slants one too often over the middle he's got look he comes in sees the ball being thrown and makes the catch they didn't make before but that is a great job of zone dropping by linebacker you've got hook to curl get to your responsibilities eyes on the quarterback see the ball being thrown make the interception that's the Mike linebacker with a second pick what a time to get it senior from Marlton New Jersey and the Hawks now inside the Crusaders 30-yard line to start this series can mama capitalize excuse me Trey can they capitalize on this sudden change font play-action well ha completes it to Lonnie Moore and he's inside the 28 a pickup of 8 I like to call why because your quarterback has been a little off early right ball placement hasn't been there you know foot mehar so what you do is you run an easy throw to get him warmed up that's like jumping jacks you know when you workouts right you get yourself warmed up by doing jumping jacks you do that early in the morning to get yourself he wants one sometimes between us you know long tell him here is that I don't know that but that's the type of play that gets a guy who maybe is a little bit off not quite on it get him warmed up and give him laughing up for his game second and two after that more pickup he's running and he's caught a pass now here's for Hart looking for the edge and can't not hang on and that looks like the first score here at the stadium though the opportunity goes by the boards they're all born in love him in a red zone he's got four touchdown passes that should have been fine I mean you you've got to catch the ball easy throw easy catch puts it up in his hands really that's the way you want to throw it he got six eight straight you want to get the ball up this is a rebound and I'll go get the rebound and credit show Lang to get his hand yet he did to floor set out but he knows that's when he should have hung on to got to be stronger with the catch all the way through from the pistol busted play here on third down I don't know did he get there he needed the 17 and looks like he's right at the stick close to the first down that's a very favorable spot it is the first down it is but you're right credit to defender there on that last play he got his hand up that's why as a defensive back the play is not over until the whistle blows the balls on the ground looked a pursuit from Holy Cross that was lying again getting over there it was and what a guy said that that spot was very generous I'm not so sure about that one in the red zone now Monmouth averaging 36 points per game this year a school record trying to get on the board first hit the ball of 25 Guerrero has it with the reverse into the hands of more inside the ten touchdown box he talked about bubble screens we talked about the speed outs we talked about jet sweeps well then here's a reverse and I said give all 25 everybody that stadium is expecting that go ahead and run the reverse with maybe the fastest guy on your team and out runs the edge defender love the call and I love number 2 in the open field because he is electric his first rushing touchdown though they looked at him often from the jet sweep and the reverse and they cash in extra point from Matt mascara the senior is good and it's 7 nothing the turnover and you get the chains whether you could catch it love to bling-bling but he deserves it watch the speed around the corner you've got to defend her but that angles not good enough against that guy touchdown mama [Music] 7-nothing mine menthol Evan in the FCS in turnover margin they turn it into a touchdown they do and there's always one unblocked player on reverses one guy you can't account for look at number seven on the right side of your screen he's that unblock player and he's trying to get across getting around and trash that angle is not good enough it was good enough in practice it's good enough you know in your conference games but when you're going against a speedster like more you've got to take a flatter angle because he's gonna get there in a hurry speed against speed and that time more wins it he had to go ahead touchdown reception at Wagner and one of the big weddings this year climbeth after a slow start offensively their defense sets up the offense for a score and that's the way you want a situation of football sudden change you have got to take advantage of it but that's great team performance there by mama the interception here in the end zone and now you've got control of the game early at home at mascara to kick it away this is returnable across the 20 big return for Macklin core turbine [Applause] all the way to midfield and the Monmouth side of the field did special teams play and hole across set a couple of them here the first time they have and then that's the great equalizer special teams when you got to excellent football teams usually comes down or turnovers and special teams and the blocking was stellar and 32 knows how to brick some tackles doesn't he so let's see now you got a great field position again if you hold a cross and they go to putt last time now you get the 50-yard line you've got to find a way to put a crooked number on a scoreboard one of the keys was no turnovers they've already copped it up once finished drives with a kick and we know about the importance of running the ball on offense that's key to their success and now the quarterback tonight is in there and he throws it complete under pressure how about this they go to the junior who is only from 17 passes all year it for Conner Degenhart that's very surprising and I think it was because the bacon heart didn't read it out on that slant and there they were looking trying to get the ball to Derek mountain too tight in in a middle screen and just couldn't find them there so the question is ok Considine how many reps has he had with the first group how's his timing on plays like a screen because he talked about the screen and I'm really surprised he got hit with that call because the ball did come out eventually watch the offensive lineman go downfield and that's fine as long as it ball is thrown behind the line of scrimmage and that's what it was Considine threw it beyond the line of scrimmage the ball has to be thrown behind the line of scrimmage and there's no call throw it beyond it's illegal man downfield that was Nichols after the center the guilty party we suck it down at the previous spot so they'll take the second at ten over the first and 15 in this case so incomplete pass on first down the book says number one dominate cozier is getting the ball be interesting to see if they try to break the trend go play action and catch them on big play interesting development here with Considine in at quarterback digging hard standing on the sidelines at their own 40-yard line does not look to be injured or just a decision here made by Holy Cross to go with their second straight quarter back Considine on second down not much do it for Spencer Gilliam as that was time near Bury the first team all-big South corner the got him it varies an excellent player and he's a captain I love quarterbacks who can tackle yes coverage is your first and primary goal and job oh give me a gun it can tackle too because once the ball is thrown you got to make a play in time Mayberry is a ridiculously good tackle at the cornerback position three-year starter at a Toms River New Jersey third down Considine deflecting is that a popular interception bomb is flooding with it and we have whistles now they're gonna call this an incomplete pass make a clean pass so I'm wondering how comfortable is constant down in this situation how many reps did he get during a week very interesting development let's see if this ball gets tipped either way as incomplete as the ball is coming forward it slipped out try that ball just slipped out his hands and again I'm trying to figure out you know did he know he was gonna get some reps I think he it hit hers and his offensive lineman there it's during the delivery but again we get it back up quarterback in but it hasn't been working with the first team there's a lot of little moving parts they get worked out during the week I'm just did I I said like a broke record but I'm just wondering you know is this was his plan and if it's not planned what do you expect from your backup quarterback and players Cody Wilkinson with a putt beat it hit cleanly it will bounce inside the 15 it'll be down at the 14 yard line Monmouth has the football back and the 7th nothing lead here again after a turnover and they'll have a big field in front of them as they take over here on their side of the field I really believe this is a very important drive for the holy cross defense they have got to find a way to continue to hand over great field position to the offense keep answering the bell if you're the Crusader defense obviously the offense hasn't shown up yet but your job is go in and stop the other team keep giving the ball in great field position and believe that they gonna get it squared away from the 14 yard line free receiver look far as he sense more emotion to the 17 for 3 yards you mentioned slowing down this offense not many people have six times they've got over 40 points this year that's pretty good that's what makes football right I mean consistently scoring points that's the name of the game I love the penetration on that last play by Marquis Bo's second team all patriot number 99 he's been very active early in the middle of this defense second and seven as we hit the four-minute mark here first quarter they swing it to the outside for 10 straight junior and a short gain up to the 23 yard line where they have a lot of tools at their disposal Green a strong wide receiver a break tackle attempt again he's a true number one guy because he lines out on the outside as opposed to Moore who's the mood guy in the slot he got green lines on the outside of the formation can run all the routes down and over the middle and that time again that was a smoke screen get some blocking on the outside wasn't a huge game but it sets up third and short and right now the entire playbook is available to just gather they've got double tied it's in there right now and jeans got it quick my third of one straight ahead that's a first down carry cooker arrow that he's hit hard and driven backwards at the 30-yard line but a pickup of six yes Chris Riley I'm not shocked there with that tackle he is a fierce fierce safety but when you got the entire playbook you don't need many pages 25 with the ball in his hands and any time it's a great play so I like the fact that you didn't get cute and just handing it all but look at them looking to get bit back there yeah that's a scary look boy oh boy you don't want to see that very often he's the leader of that secondary Riley in a Guerrero a little bit shaken up they don't have to bail just their short yardage guy out with a lower body injury so they don't have the depth they were anticipating behind Guerrera here's bahar sat back at the 24-yard line mark Evo Evo was the first guy in 97 Jason Moe back he cleaned it up but like I said before Evo has gotten off to a great start in his ballgame and the keys a defensive lineman especially on play-action pass you're gonna get blocked initially firm to line screws we got keep coming it's one thing to get blocked they're really good D lineman don't stay block they get off blocks using their hands hustle to the football I love the body language I love the energy that the Crusader defense is playing with or you love the interior live play I can sex Italy the passion from you and being on that side of the ball in your career up the gut calibrates 140 and a first down across the 45 yard line there is that sprinter speed he averages 139 yards per game and really I'm gonna say this is a big play by hold across because we've seen how many times on film this is a house call against most defenses but looking at hustle to come back and get in that play that was Jacob Dobbs but for their lucky that was not a touchdown nappa Hart's gonna go to the air downfield has a man trying to stretch out the defense there was that Treadway the junior from langhorne pennsylvania he was in the clear he was and Kenzie Bihar has been a little off today you know he hasn't really been able to get comfortable those are the type of plays that we saw on film mommoth destroyed defense with 25 getting the ball getting to clear scoring touchdowns or setting up a play like that well you've got a house call on the outside that balls on target it's a team that throws for 277 per game rushes for 210 those are the averages good balance throughout the course of the year second down and 10 pressure coming they're gonna rock into it not to do it Guerrero and that's where pressure to the line can be effective and Dobbs is in there one of the best freshmen in the country and he bought a number 99 he bow with them but this is a run blitz to get your guys in the backfield penetration right away and I don't care if it's Emmitt Smith well Pete Guerrero if you get penetration right away it's tough to run a football now the hard look you could throw the ball nothing there he tucks it and runs it up to the 49 yard line on the field the ball carrier was down fourth them and fourth now coming up third down he's going to be used part of his game Holy Cross has not been great on third down defense today they have played wealth and mommoth have been excellent on third down conversion so just let's just keep monitoring that third down situation when mommoth has the ball because the only way that Holy Cross could stay in this game is to get them all feeling third down so I ear Asante standing back at the Crusaders 10-yard line awaited cost good kick this time hangs it up there a fair catch call for made at the 11 yard line so far the defense has been good on both sides the short field helping out Monmouth the FB impressed with the the front seven on both sides I agree with you and the only difference between the two because they play Stella like you said was this a turnover an eternal was set the Monmouth offense up so deep they only needed a few yards to score and so if I'm the Crusader defense I'm loving what's happening but I'm saying I got an out play that mom and defense I got to come up with my own pick six or my own turnover deep in the opposing teams side of the field and give me an opportunity or get my office an opportunity enforce on the score Holy Cross will start from the 11 yard line and if two receivers left and they try to run it with Kosir that's busted up up in there nothing doing up the middle now hurry scarlet was in there the senior defensive end and that didn't have a chance from the get-go well I shouldn't get upfield right now he outran the puller you know that he had a puller to kick him out look to be number 68 jack bowler but bola just wasn't quick enough to get up there to kick him out because Kihara got off the ball so well TfL great job Matt Considine the Wake Forest transfer staying in at the quarterback spot in for Connor degenhardt who was pulled in this first quarter a surprising move Considine in 2018 a couple pass attempts through the Demon Deacons but only two games of action this year that's the end of the first quarter lacrosse as quarter play let's turn over the big story I've been cashing in seven nothing second quarter coming up a trip to James Madison and the second round of the FCS playoffs on the line [Music] number 10 is Connor degenhardt the everyday starter at quarterback from the Holy Cross team's second team all patriot league whole in the first quarter in favor of Matt Considine a surprising move they haven't been the same offense so with without Connor on the field well it's interesting you got to wonder what is it something physical is it just the interception and then the call was made there coach's decision we're gonna March this all game because in this situation right here this is he got to be very careful with the football if you Considine and I've gone back how many reps has he had what's the timing light with his receivers we're gonna find out second at 15 at the 5-yard line they'll run a little delay and not much doing straight ahead a couple of yards third of all coming up I will save this the offensive line and your running backs and your wide receivers you got to pick this guy up you've got to find a way now to out execute everything you've been doing before that because you've got a backup quarterback in the game you got to make plays for this Peter Oliver in for cozier at the running backs by getting the football up to the 8 yard line big third and 13 and this is a big down for the bottom of defense as well that's right be careful showing blitz they back off flush three Considine from his Enzo deep ball receiver a shot take that would have been a first down and that's what I'm talking about you got to pick this guy up that was a great throat and an obviously Patrick Murphy the offensive corner has a lot of confidence in this guy concertina and that ball is right where it needs to be don't know how you missed it Trey I had no idea but I hear who has had a great year really second team all Patriots just a freshman you've got to find a way to make that play and get yourself a first down now Derrick Eng is gonna punch he's only punted 10 times this year and the place kickers got to punt it from his end zone end over end and a fair catch made floor vomits gonna have a short field as they'll start this series from the 40-yard line Eddie Morales calling for the fair catch now this Monmouth program second FCS playoff trip their first home game of the playoffs a beautiful campus just a couple miles from the water and we talked about how they've only lost one game in their Stadium this has been a great place to play the kids love playing here Kevin Callahan said head coach they love playing here they get excited and they take pride in defending that turf and that's very inspiring then when they come out and play every single Saturday at home currently on the longest win streak in school history eight game win streak heading into postseason play from the 40 Guerrero a little stutter step move stuck his foot in the ground he moves it up to the 36 for four yards only 190 pounds but he's not afraid to stick his nose in there you see a lot of smaller back strike guys they want to run on discipline take one step inside the family want to bounce it outside this guy is a very disciplined running back in patient he's slow to the hole and fast through it and that's what you want he was the FCS national player of the week against Campbell 237 yards and three touchdowns on that one on second sets the snap bobble down into the hands of the running back Guerrero try the club first down inside the 20 out of bounds he gets the edge look out yeah I mean we talked about again up inside he's nice but boy when he bounces it look out watch the vision his the inside play that's well to go inside nothing near he bounces it and look out here now that extra defender though the sidelines is the only thing that kept him in ibn zone between the tackles this time as he picks up free to shy of the 15-yard line they haven't blocked marquise bow or Jason MODOK yet and that ball is running up near the center they got to get those guys block when it's going off guard they passed his success he thought he did against Hampton last week and he added a score through the air to the net this two rushing touchdowns had another one receiving Ziggy step good last week second at seven they're in the red zone looking for some more points here already leading seven nothing the hard stepping up in the pocket scrambling its gonna tuck it and he runs out of bounds and he's lifting as he walks out a bad boy at the 13 that could be a big development hearing he mean this guy is a Payton Award finalist one of the best players of the country watch him read out he can run but he's not a runner he's a scrambling quarterback keeps his eyes downfield but it has the ability to run and once he opens it up that thing grabs on him right there I've been there any athlete who's played football has been there at least once in their career and won that thing grabs it's a skid hurry deal now he stays in the ballgame something to keep your eye on that could limit his mobility as this game wears on but you also have to think big picture long-term it could be a a serious deal for Monmouth I took that's not serious injury here to five from the gun Mahara doctor a quick playback Chris Riley wow that looked like Norah was going to haul it in for the touchdown he profiled the guy for a reason he's got five interceptions and seven pass breaks up pass break up scuse me first-team all Patriot League and that's how you play man-to-man here's the Blitz ball comes out whoa look at that beautiful job of laying out because a receiver had a step on it Lonnie Moore had a step but he dove laid out made the play 30-yard field goal attempt from that mascara second team all-conference this year and he puts it through their 10 nothing Monmouth Holy Cross defense stepping up 10 nothing lead from Monmouth but some concern now with the Big South Offensive Player of the Year Kenji Behar came up limping on that last drive and they wrap up his left leg go up to keep a close eye on that yeah he threw a compression wrap on it to try to hold that muscle in but this missed the playoffs all right and I guarantee that guy right there is gonna go if he can can you go or can you not go and this time of year that's the only question and right now number 11 says I can go [Applause] they get an interception turn it into a touchdown then a short field and a field goal to make it end up thing is mascara kicks it away [Applause] - the 24 line again another big return to midfield and ease into Monmouth territory and finally dragged down near the 40-yard line so clearly kickoff coverage is a problem for Mama's first time it was up the middle this time is right up the sidelines watch them cut it back and look at the blocking when your returner does not get touched until you get to the 40 yard line you know the blocking has been absolutely sick Macklin quarter buying a senior from Whitefish Bay Wisconsin with a couple big returns to help out Holy Cross this is unsustainable if your mama you can't keep giving up kick returns like this and it not come back to bite you if you hold it cross you've got to take advantage of this look at this tyotka Connor degenhardt is back in nuts up early stages second quarter after getting pulled for Considine back in a quarterback they'll run the ball and it's cozier who's also back in the game for a couple yards of the 38 yard line Holy Cross program great history when you consider the 124 years of football oldest Catholic College New England they actually played in the Orange Bowl 1946 loss to Miami on the final play how about you digging it up I did not know that and they also want a national championship and basketball with Bob Cousy in 1947 let me say this Considine did not play bad nick playmakers didn't step up for Dagan heart nobody there he was under pressure though right up the gut Nick shoemaker was in the backfield and he had ugly in a hurry well he was looking for a goal route and he's a stopper on the outside I hear a sansei and degenhardt weren't on the same page and that can look ugly when you're not you expect that from maybe Considine who's the backup but that's just started they're not on the same page and that's not reading the coverage out right I mean one guy is thinking I've got a stopped route available to me the other guy thinking he's gonna take it up top they're lucky that that doesn't end up in an interception throw today Jack Jewell lined up as a receiver bottom part of the screen two receivers left here and they need to get into the 30 yard line to keep the drive going again historically throughout the year Holy Cross has struggled on third down let's see if we can pick this third and long up from the shotgun degenhardt go through the middle accepted Eric Massey two interceptions by linebackers Powell and Massie stepping up and the Hawks have a bet he's not seen the field we'll try this is zone coverage and he's not seeing the underneath defender and that that's very very easy play that's two for Powell yeah picking that off two interceptions for the senior and all he's doing is his back he straight up and you know degenhardt has not seen him he's locked in on the receiver running his his slant over the middle and just you got to be to see the entire field you gotta know the coverage and see the and see the defenders and throw it through the holes and that's just not happening that game for the captain Hawks from the 37 play-action near sideline going load again at his lot anymore and he was a 10 at the 45 yard line Carpio that's a pinched route by Moore that ball comes out on time and on target exactly where it needs to be low on the outside that's the execution number 11 is starting to get warmed up we said early he was a little off but now he's starting to get warmed up and that's bad news for the holy cross defense st. yard pickup this time two receivers to the right foot Behar who has really spread the wealth around this year at the quarterback position they'll hand it off to Guerrero and he has the first down to the holy cross side of the field the 48 yard line how do you kion this team when he have explosive receivers and then the FCS leading rusher it's hard right the first thing you have got to get number 25 stop if you don't stop him you got no chance but that's just the start of it they've got terrific playmakers on the outside and they got a trigger man when he's on is as good as anybody in America 12 carries 77 yards for Guerrero lucky to throw it here deep wall and it is incomplete in the double coverage Reynolds who's back there defending Terrence green jr. he got some help from Chris Riley and I get it you've got a lot of confidence in 23 but I think you like go somewhere else with this football right he got to find a way and Walter Reynolds got away with a little pushing him back there's no question about it that probably should have been pass interference but there's one on one on a backside if I Mackenzie Behar I'm looking somewhere else that could have been Reynolds third pick he had a chance to pick that one yeah now it's seconded 10th for the 48th I think that's a ball down lost situation you got away with a push the ball ends up on the ground ball don't lot two receivers deep side pressure coming up a hard setting up the strata beauty [Applause] well can see play and they though the holy cross right into that one yeah and just another example of the versatility of number 25 now 25 makes the highlight play but I want you to look for number 86 Sean Clark watch him sustain this block downfield just to the right of the screen right there now that's blocking his I'm learning Holy Cross that's blocking it amazing yarder to fulfill with the floor without holding and that's exactly what you need the big plays in the passing game generally especially on the screens it takes blocking and sustain blocking downfield and number 25 boy we know when he gets in an open field look out any time he doesn't score in a play like that it's an upset 28 yard pickup you heard the sideline warning from our referee Andy special here against Holy Cross play stands first down to 20 Holy Cross mind the hole they've thought number 86 Sean Clark was holding and spinifex body has got that building offense starting day love you before here as they run it nothing to do at that time they go straight ahead with James Farah the sophomore who's carried it 23 times Jacob Dobbs in on the play no surprise yeah right no surprise fear I mean this guy is as good a freshman playing the line back positions you'll see anywhere in America and probably the best freshman line back in history over the cross football those numbers second at 10 where coast that's a workhorse back under 200 pounds that's simple it you'll see that very often well hard looking for the end zone cut from a touchdown Terrence green jr. his ninth of the year and 16 nothing and that's Kinsey Behar at his best the poise the footwork to balance and the touch gonna throw there's the fake watch them look off right there look off to safety and watch this throw you talk about dropping in a basket beautiful throw by baha and everything was picture-perfect the fundamentals of throwing the football does not get me but that was a coaching clinic put that snap up and show it to young kids my scarran's extra point is through there 17 nothing and you can see why you can keep this offense quiet for a little bit but you're not going to do it over the course of two minutes more a touchdown run karinna touchdown grab and that is exactly how you throw the football folks let them drop that thing in the bucket great start 17 nothing mama a couple Evans power interception setting up monmouth touchdown drive 17 nothing coach callaghan's team in front here in the second quarter ESPN's coverage of the FCS championship continues next weekend with a second round coverage on ESPN 3 for more information go to NCAA comm the official online home for all 90 NCAA championships two big picks from Powell the Mike linebacker and a six play 63 yard drive after 27 yard touchdown drive that's been a big story here the short field it has and you can give credit to the mom of offense for taking advantage how many teams don't take advantage of short fields and turnovers mascara with a squib kick to one of the up backs and a return out to the 32 yard live for Hunter burns and that's been the story of the game Holy Cross has not taken advantage of their short fields the kickoff return game has been good this is good field position here at the 35 yard line any offense would take this on a regular basis 33 34 yard line that's great starting a drive start a verage but haven't been able to capitalize and the reason is because of the turnovers can't cheat Bihar trying to work off that leg injury we saw wrapped just moments ago getting some bike work done here and Considine is back in at quarterback but he throws the first pass incomplete so they have rotated between degenhardt and Considine obviously coach Chesney not pleased with this quarterback play here the first half he's not and you know right now Connor doe degenhardt has four completions of the problem is two of them have been Evan Powell plays defense for the other team so back then that's been the killer 14 points off turnovers is 17 nothing but on that last play time ear berry I mean that was great one on one covers very physical at the line of scrimmage and really disrupted that play for the beginning picked off twice today they've done a pretty good job protecting the football but not so far today Considine deep drop this time over the middle and it is bottles to intercept it that was intended for Gilliam and almost picked very dangerous throw these windle's are tight when you playing playoff football against good defenses it's not not a bad decision but boy almost an interception there by them number six Anthony bug stepped up so it all away right now they're playing zone coverage you got to come up with some zone beaters right now because the defenders from mom if I seen the ball being thrown and breaking up on my third to Ted cozy that's not going to get it done to the 43 for 4 yards work down a very conservative call there knowing the pass rush was coming that's not gonna pick up the first down yeah I said Patrick Murphy has to find a way to adjust he's getting a mix of Man and zone and Andy Berbick is hot right now as a defensive coordinator for Mama's he's guessing right seemingly every time and his players are making plays when they get the opportunity samatha the chance will get the football back here just over eight minutes to go as you look at Eddie Morales they've got a chance to really create some separation here before half-time already leading 17 nothing Derrick egg gets his plot away from the 28 Morales calling for a fair catch and he makes it just shy of the 30-yard line we don't know about the harsh status we saw about the bike but they've got a lot of people that can hurt you and of course pete guerrero one of those the leader the Payton Award candidate our running back in the heart will be off the football field and he's still grabbing at that hamstring and he's toughing it out that's why as a captain when I went to look as the accuracy first of all I started off there well the Kostas gotta take advantage of that even Apple to get your hands on the ball early on each struggle but then he started to get his feeling and I think it started with that smokescreen here and a couple of screens got him warmed up and his confidence grew from there nothing doing for Guerrero there tried to bounce away from a couple tacklers and lucky to pick up a yard to the 31 yard line he is eight of 14 through the air Bihar 87 yards and that touchdown strike but now you've got the ability to do a lot of things with the lead you don't have to press with your team up 70 nothing you don't and that make sure offense you know really diverse because you get to play accidents there whenever you want it obviously handing it to 25 is one of the best decisions that any college football team can make what do you use him as a decoy and play off of them as well now they pitch it to you touchdown vomit [Applause] tre I've played against burners like that he got attack his outside leg if you don't tackle his outside leg and set the edge of his defence forget it one step is in it's over there is nobody on the field or any team that can catch number 25 in the open field you've got to find a way to keep him bottled up by setting the edge of the defense and tackling his outside leg or you have no shot 15 rushing touchdowns there's 12 in the last 14 game so that's a blocked extra point as mascara has it blocked good play upfront by Jason modak but correct on this the chains thanks to this run when you got a guy who's got an elite speed get him on the outside let him show it that's Quicksilver folks 43 nothing mamas [Applause] [Applause] piqué Guerrero 10.65 and a hundred meters showcasing his skills as he bounces it to the outside it was over and when you get a guy to the perimeter it's very important that your corners come up in support to the outside and I believe that Reynolds see he comes to the outside but he widens too much you got a press that guy up field and keep outside he didn't press him upfield he stayed back they gave a cutback Lane right at the perimeter for number 25 P Guerrero and that's over you've got to come up as a corner and yes stay outside but press it upfield to force him to cut back because if he doesn't cut back goodbye look at the day today that is his 19th career 100-yard rushing game over 1,800 for the year he's a special player you got track guys and you got football players that's a track guy who's made himself a football player and that's why he is a stupid good college player right now he's an option quarterback in high school at the track route and they are glad to have him on the gridiron two-time All Big South and a finalist for the Payton Award the FCS most outstanding offensive player mascara a short kick and a fair catch is called for and made by burns at the 30-yard line well if you're the Crusaders now you need to come up with something positive here heading into halftime first rule of winning is you can't beat yourself and so far that's what they've done offensively they've thrown the ball to the other guy the field position the drive start a verge has been exactly what you want if you did if you're an offense you've got to find a way to capitalize by not throwing it to the other guy we haven't seen their dynamic runner on display you got to get dominic cozier into the open field whether that's through a run missed tackle whatever or scheme in it by throwing it to him but number one I'm telling you he can change the school board in a hurry - you got to find a way to get in the ball in space he only has four carries for 19 yards a guy that averages close to a hundred per game he'll start in front the 28 yard line and on cue here is closed here there goes 40 there's that speed up near midfield they takes a big hit just 5 9 181 and he's a lightning bolt in the open field Anthony but on the tackle I'm not Nostradamus I just understand football he's one of the best playmakers on the field and if you don't give it to him you have no chance your offense is built on the guy like this and that's how you tackle Anthony but that data let him know right that'll wake you up right there but you get him in space there aren't very many people that's going to catch him coaches say he can take it from 4 yards to 40 in a heartbeat we also saw that there from the 15 areas again right up the gut first down 30 yards on that carry for the seniors it's not rocket science you've got a big-time athlete right who's got an unbelievable quickness and is a super exciting playmaker breaks one tackle too BAM he's outside now watch number 9 Eric Massey whoa look at that guy shot of a kipman right that's 6 to 225 pounds who's got an angle but he's running them down that is impressive I'm just telling you right now if the NFL scout is in the building or sees its fill and sees that guy a defensive end run down a fast running back look out now that's the type of guy you want on your team yeah he's there edge guys second team all-big South could catch up with coach here at the end though miles Alexander enough to doing this is a senior from Overland Park Kansas getting the call and guess who's in there Eric Massey yeah Massey we love him he's all facing around the football always making plays because of his speed you have got to block him on the backside I'd rather run right at number nine if you let him come down the line and I'm not saying he's Lawrence Taylor but remember all the plays Lawrence Taylor makes one on NFL field I know you're older and I'm trying to remember that this is another one of those areas Jarvis absolutely but you know LG started and everybody after him wanted to replicate that but number nine has that type of speed to turn and run down the line of scrimmage and make plays second 15 after the loss on the carry by Alexander Considine looking to the air just shy of the goal line he was looking for Jack Jewell the sophomore from Franklin Tennessee too far on that to us and the late pressure couldn't get a number there with a late pressure forced a Terry throw that ball is gonna come out earlier he's waiting too long running out of real estate on the bench route smash throughout this smash concept well you got the inside receiver running a bench route and if you throw that ball late you bring the sideline in as an extra defender and he just can't complete the ball they've not been good the passing game their quarterbacks could buy for a 15 so far today and this is a tough down pick up third and 15 they need to get inside the 10 and number ones not in the ball game and so that's a problem for the guys in white and whistles and a timeout called by Holy Cross important to get points here this is a tough third down to pick up though you're in field goal range but why not take a shot down by 23 well you got to be careful okay this is the the scoreboards not so far that you have no chance and you've got to hit desperate you got to be very careful with the football Connor knew Dugan Hart has shown the ability to throw it to the other team Considine hasn't been extremely productive you better be very careful with the football if you do decide to throw it because it like you said you gotta come all your points here's what's at stake a trip to James Madison that will not be an easy chore for either one of these teams at number two overall seed 1 Eastern Time sever first NFC a second-round play what a year they've had the Big Sky well represented of course we've got the defending champs North Dakota's destroy the favorites again the number one overall seed North Dakota State and James Madison those are class of the entire FCS but Kennesaw State now I just wanted to keep an eye on them they run the football they've run that option and they're very physical a lot of teams don't prepare against stuff like that and wouldn't be shocked that they kind of make it a little run here coming out of the timeout third and 15 trips to the right pressure covered on Considine goes the other way to the end zone it's a cute little flight comes here he wanted Derek Mountain the tight end a big target at 6'5 I think they're gonna get time here berry here it looks like for pass interference I don't know a lot of hand fighting on both sides I think I saw what might have been a grab by berry 15-yard penalty for the previous spot automatic first down as Mountain decide to go up you saw his body he couldn't get all the way because berry had a hold of them they were fine with the hand fighting but when berry decided to go up at the time that time me excuse me when Mountain decided to go up at the time that berry was not looking back that's a that's really a high alert for the flag to come out and that's exactly what happened that's a big play for this Holycross offense they've got a first to go down at the 10 and you said they needed to take a shot that's exactly what happened didn't get to touchdown but its first and goal here's Chris here [Applause] great play by Anthony Budd their junior free safety and he's had a good first half first time first team all-big South and watched his play in the open field went through to stiff arm and found a way to make a play he's got five interceptions that leads the team but he can't play the run as well plays very fast doesn't clock out is the fastest guy on the field but give me a guy that plays faster than the speed and I'll take him and win with those this time cozier to the left to the quarterback on a second at goal Considine border patter to the end zone any complete looking for Gilliam Tyrese Wright was with them the freshman safety from Bridgeport Connecticut yeah Gilliam's running a wheel route right now and he's forced in very disciplined play and that's exactly what you got from the defender Tyrese right and you see them look back at the end once you look back like that they're gonna let a little bit of contact go but that's excellent positional defense didn't panic kept his hands away into the last second that's what it takes to force an incompletion in third and go trips left will only cross got to be smart with the football here to the touchdown Derrick Mountain the top tight end many feel in the Patriot League a Campbell Trophy semifinalist hauls it in its third touchdown grab of the year now watch this throw by Constantine look them drive that ball and how about the placement if that ball is a little bit behind that's another pass break up or even interception that ball is exactly where it needs to be and did lead him out of bounds to Trey so that ball was on time great ball placement by number 14 and mountain at 6'5 251 is a tough matchup for anybody excuse me number 16 an important score here with just over four minutes to go Holy Cross brings on Derek in for the extra point would be shocked if we see dougen heart after that throw that was a great throw when they had to have it Hannah's 23 to 7 14 yard touchdown strike for Considine to mountain to get him on the board and mountain is the king in the red zone but his size speed combination and you're gonna play man-to-man with a safety if the ball is where is supposed to be you should have a chance he that's exactly what happened here you know what you got to like about mountain he he's he's six five he's 251 he's a great tide and he's also a philosophy major these are these are some truths to that play totally cross a great school no doubt about it from Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania has hopes of playing in the NFL down the line we'll see how that pans out but this last drive an important one for the Crusaders it all started with number one we each said he had to get him the football he's the guy that sets the table for your office and that's what he did missed tackles the speed and the toughness and he took some shots on some of these plays and we saw their number 9 really hustling down there's the pass in the fears to set up first and goal and look at the drop that ball right but that's a beautiful throw NFL type arm strength right there seven plays 71 yards Mountain capping it off and a little bit of confidence now for this Holy Cross team and they needed it looks like he's got a new sidekick and the Crusaders haven't grant Holloman jumping on the onside kick and they've got it back we had a chance to score some more points here Holy Cross has been dominant from the opening kick on special teams and when you do that you will give yourself a chance please like drive start average on your kickoff return and then kick coverage and now the surprise onside kick watch the discipline of the coverage guys not touching the ball too early you see it every day on Sundays NFL players they get excited and touch it too early that ball is not touched until after ten years by the kicking team first down and that's what the ruler should be that ball went about 12 yards before it was touched but clearly they saw on film that the up guys for Mahmoud leave early they get back and when you see a team leaving early getting back you put a fool thought bubble in your head and hey we can come with an onside kick whenever we need it that's exactly what happened there how about Bob Chesney roll of the dice there and pays off here's cozier they strike him out pretty well good job there that was pretty awkward that got in the backfield first and they limit him to a one-year game but what happens you start to establish that number one's gonna get the ball and then you can start running the rpoS and a play-action off of that which makes it very easy now for your quarterback and what a time to break out there first for cover getting here here in the playoffs right excellent kick now let's give some love to kick Orton again yeah you know I don't like kickers all right okay don't talk book because very much but that was a great onside kick that was Kody Wilkinson that did the honors the senior from Casper Wyoming put it right on the spot second and died down pat to die slant pattern and that's caught called it by ear Asante the freshman that they're really excited about sprinter speed for the second team all-conference receiver it's amazing when you start to establish your running game that feed now the throwing lanes become a little more visible for the quarterback when you do decide to throw it it was deep Nagle going down to get that good enough for a first down at the 41 yard line as they rotate their receivers and they've three receivers right now handoff cozier and he's bottled up lucky to get back to the line of scrimmage that was Kihara Scarlets that made a big play from his defensive position coming down the line we talked about Massey coming in on line when you run a lot of these rpoS when you run a lot of these read options generally though the defensive end on the backside of the play is going to be unblocked and they're saying that it's we're gonna get our running back to beat him well if the front side is bottled up and that running back has to chop his feet at all or cut it back that defensive end needs to show up and that's exactly what happened second it dives for the 48 I got a backup hold it cross here Mountain the tight end was lined up as receiver the outside he jumped early full story office number 14 five-yard penalty second down these teams don't get a lot of penalties that's a sign of too well coached football teams Holy Cross is one of the best in FCS and not creating two penalties not getting called but both teams really very discipline teams very well coached now second and fourteen has to move the football back to the 45 yard line they just capped off with 71 dr drive now Considine and company looking for more points and they could change the complexion of this game completely with a touchdown drive here stands in there delivers a strike and did gilliam hang on no no it could wait no time time here put that finger I'm saying no sir no no tray he did not hold on because I was physical with my hands at the point of catch watch Barry come through with those hands outstanding coverage there outstanding pass break up by number one he does it all the time I would stop testing him I would go the other way number one is up to the task we got rush three here on third law Considine to the sideline and that is a catch hauled in by Killian this time short of the stick it's a fourth down and decision time here how about that toe tap there that's how you work the sidelines and that throw gave him a chance didn't throw him out of bounds that was a little comeback route ball comes out outside where it needs to be and Gilliam gets his feet down at least one that's all you need in college and no hesitation here they'll go for it on fourth and 2 [Applause] Gilliam and Nagle's will split right in the formation and whistles really on the previous play once completed catch that play is under further review I'm gonna take a look at that catch Mike Gilliam on the far sideline it's a big play I make sure you're doing right because this is setting up a fourth and very manageable that's that's complete dere try that left foot appeared to be down to me excuse me that right foot now I mean if the angle looks like it's down that this might be a this would be a tougher look is that toe down looks half there yeah and so whenever you're doing these replays the first thing you gotta ask yourself okay what's the call on the field the call on the field is complete so you have to have undisputable visual evidence that the call in the field was wrong those three angles I didn't see undisputable visual evidence it looked to be a maybe at best but maybe won't be good enough to overturn see it appears of that foot is down but you can't say 100% that it's not that looks like it's down right there yeah it does and in that you know that when you blow it up like that and that's great camera work by guys a great work in the truck by our ladies and men and the production truck that that's me that that the replies should be calling it field is confirmed that's you know that that's what that's what you teach your wide receivers that's if the play is not over once you have hands touch it you got to get your feet down to and I play with some great ones in st. Louis Rams the Isaac Bruce is the toy host of the world I saw here are keen those guys made a living of practicing toe taps on the sidelines Henry Elliot used to say you gotta let your legs go dead see a lot of people try to stab those feet and when they stab when they stab them out of balance make the catch let your legs go dead stop where they are that's what Spitzer giving him did it's clearly well coached on how to work the sidelines and come away with it Ricky Proehl I won't forget about my Mario's another one yeah here's a call [Music] ball was out of bounds holy crumbs that gives it the opportunity now to go for it 4/3 short big play coming up here with just over 2 minutes to go and I would give a consideration to getting that ball to number one but anything if you look at the words he used confirmed that means that the visual evidence showed that the call in the field was correct when it's murky can go either way he'll say that call in the field stands but it was confirmed there about a great camera work no I got it looked at getting number one the ball I don't know if you run it I don't know if you throw a swing pass to him but when it's fourth in one and a half and you got the best player on your offensive never actually here and he's not help to cook he is not out there that says Peter Oliver in as the running back here double tight end set on third down about a yard and a half fourth down to the yard and a half it's going to be Oliver straight ahead did he get there whose clothes looks like it snowed they go to a 220-pound running back and I don't know and I don't know why number ones not in the game boy this is a big call big measurement here because if Monmouth gets the football back they've got plenty of time to go down and get a score before half-time no doubt about it interesting call I don't mind wearing the ball I just wondering why we were running our backup running back no disrespect to Oliver but cozier is the one that's brought you back as you saw it bob says he's talking to his one of his offensive linemen clearly there was a missed block or a failed block and in that situation dozen men who drawing the ball they stretch it out and the hot stop them on fourth down huge play two interceptions and then that poured down stop how about the bottom of defense well it's been opportunistic you've seen great rushes you've seen great pursuit and you've seen a couple of eating's right here by number five Evan pile he's been one of the favorite receivers unfortunately for the Holy Cross offense but their front seven has been dominant and their defensive back some critic did a great job with tackling and breaking up passing so it's been a great defensive performance at all levels you have 11 interceptions this season as a d now the bar was some time to work with hands enough to corral across the 40 close to first half Flanagan's down this could be coming back that's generally a holding position if you look where that flag came down expect us to be holding going back the other way holding Justin sue by the right tackle they like Zubov they think he was the biggest surprise all year massive guys 6 8 3 10 just a junior 4.0 GPA though I like that you know I can't even get 4.0 you know in anything that's a big number right I can't get 4.0 them on my uber rating and his guys getting it and a history education major that's at a school like mama that's pretty good now first 20 across showing blitz for our can't complete and they brought a little pressure there and that seemed to push up a heart livid off-kilter on that toss they showed Lange ants about DBS bringing some pressure sometimes when you show that pressure it gives the offense a tip and they can pick it up right Tom they got through and we talked about some of the things that get Kinsey Behar in trouble with Jeff gallo when he gets pressure sometimes that can rattle him and most quarterbacks really gonna run it here with Guerrero and a couple of yards and that's it that time they set Cory Stefanik the strong safety guy they call Cory Hulk love the timeout here by Holy Cross all right you've got a third and long set up you'd call the timeout to preserve the time to get your offense an opportunity to change the scoreboard because any kind of score here would be used for your team Bob Chesney who lives breathes and eats and sleeps football has done a tremendous job just one winning season in the previous six before his arrival at Holy Cross and he's really put a stamp on this program their first Patriot League title since 2009 and their seventh in school history that guy in your screen is a rising star and FCF coaching ranks okay and the Holy Cross is lucky to have them they gonna have to work hard to keep him he's turned this program around you are in the right direction and guys like that you see move on sometimes and I'm not hoping that in wishing that I'm just saying it is what it is now in this situation if your Holy Cross be heat this pocket up then you come up and have some success with it Bliss's they're showing blitz with Dobbs he backs off that they love the draw it's Guerrero a safe call here with the lead he's up to the 27 yard line fourth down coming up I like the call to blitz and why you walk up in and you take up all the gaps right now all right as long as everybody stays in our gap and makes the tackle you got a chance final timeout taken here by Holy Cross with 107 to go in spot with team ten and two this year their second FCS playoff trip and how about this team at Catholic Stadium undefeated this year at home undefeated two years ago when I opened up the stadium the 17 one loss at home in 2018 that's really an outlier when you can win your home games you've set yourself up for postseason every single year as another team that's working for undefeated at home and Penn State Nittany Lions I don't know the only buddy played in Penn State let's see I have to think about this well you take your time we'll be way back there but now winning your home games are very important I don't care what level is you and your home games you got a chance to be special Ryan cost standing it is 13 yard line gets to kick away under pressure and that will bounce sideways inside the court and Holy Cross will have good field position as it market at the 38 yard line just a minute and a second to work with but time to possibly get some points here before the break again the special teams has been great they're clarifying that Holy Cross has no timeouts remaining and that's fine you got plenty of time and keep in mind the clock the clock stops with every first down this is college football so a minute we just over have to feel to work with you're in good shape timewise but the special teams I can't say enough the drive start average for Holy Cross has been absolutely nearly perfect that's winning football they keep this going in second half that's going to bode well for they come back chances not to dive it's intercepted [Applause] by Holy Cross [Applause] and Monmouth has a chance as its picked off I hear a Sante shot on the ball tray this is called alligator arms but he was too worried about the zone coverage you got to go in and make that catch with no fear first things first catch the football if you short on that thing it gets tipped up and that's an interception ball waiting to happen that Castronovo with the picket he gets the chain here too from pal now Castronovo and the Hawks now the chance to get some points just under a minute to go boy that turnover that was one of the keys not to turn it over yeah and they had it's really bit them here at this one bar limping as he rolls right and he throws it away and he is noticeably limping now as he tried to get away from pressure you talked about what this could he's talking about why it's not intentional grounding once you get out of that tackle box and you get the ball at least the line of scrimmage brownies not a issue but got some hablar now see that's a problem not only for this game and if I'm Holy Cross I'm thinking about blitzing more because he's now went from being a mobile quarterback a dynamic threat to now an immobile quarterback but even if they were able to win this game what does this mean down the line as its competition could get even stiffer setting up the spray Treadway inside the 30 rules of pile forward to the 26 yard line third now coming up and clearly he's not the same guy they talk about how he can keep plays alive with his feet he's not able to do that right now yeah he's compromised physically he's a timeout here with 31 seconds to go but their defense has really said this offense up today no question about it the conversion of opportunities to turn the ball over we've seen Holy Cross play really good defense but they had their hands on a couple balls they couldn't catch an internal which can really cover up a lot of ugly defense and when you capitalize on them we've seen multiple touchdowns off of turnovers two touchdowns 14 of that 23 points came directly off four turnovers they're working on it more now [Music] they have had couple touchdown drives off of pal interceptions 40 are for plays 27 yards and then six plays 63 yards and then you have the fit Carrero touchdown run that looked like it might have broken this game open holy cross that a nice response but this offense has been tough to deal with school record in terms of points per game they're on pace to outdo their averages as you see on the screen big play here though they need to get the football to the 20-yard line [Applause] ha steps up backside pressure and then he's dropped back at the 31 yard line Holy Cross getting a good play from Leah Bandar sent their linebacker and it's 4th down this is going to be an issue in the second half he just doesn't have the mobility to get away from pressure whether that's through blitzing on this situation this is a green dog well you got a a linebacker who has coverage in the back the back stays in so he just signed out steps up he comes the extra rusher and cleans it things up 30 seconds Sanderson's third sack this year a big one for the sophomore and with fourth down here you've got a kicker in mascara that has made one from 47 yards that's about the length of this kick chance to tack on three more [Music] near the game-winning field goal in overtime against Albany second team all-big South kicker boy you know postseason Toyota you better have your specialist step up you know to be put in the spotlight there's no question about it and the competition Jillian in the postseason is stiffer in the than it was in a regular season and so mistakes miscues and special teams or perfect special teams can would it go a long way to decide the ballgame we know Holy Cross has been dominating this game more in special teams but here's an opportunity for this kicker now to really not put a nail in the coffin but really make this a tough cop comeback proposition for Holy Cross in the second half to tie it season y is 12 of 16 off field goals [Applause] [Music] plenty of wagon he got it Matt mascara gives Monmouth a boost and it says halftime he's got ice water in his veins Trey he says I can do this this is what I do I can make pressure kicks just give me a chance coach pretty impressive first half for the bottom of box 26 7 their halftime wait this is setting up to be a great second half because we got a injured kicker or excuse me as a quarterback don't go anywhere this is gonna be a good one [Music] from Jerry Rice to tio Phil Simms to Carson Wentz the FCS continues to produce elite talent across the country Geno Janowski has more [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sweetness rice Sims they didn't play in football palaces nobody sent a camera crew to see what had made Jews on National Signing Day Warner Williams Westbrook Nike didn't customize their uniforms Google Maps couldn't find their campuses Moss poets Romo their scores were on the agate page not the front page Keith Jackson never whoa Nelly them it's a McNair to Jaworski Allen maybe they were two inches too short too tense a second too slow or maybe just maybe the big school recruiters had rockets for brains [Applause] Jones you can dent Vinatieri wince you take the big school players the FPS players often the FCS guys at once Browns the Long's the guys with chips on their shoulder pads and just to be fair will spot you a touchdown some high-profile names who have made the move to the next level yeah no question about it and when I watch that that video I see a bunch of playmakers guys I played against but I think the most important takeaway and say if you can play the NFL is going to find you no matter how small the enrollment is how small the stadium all-out and you'll get your opportunity that man stay with this more halftime coming up front Monmouth University FCS first round play the piles in our daily lives consume us from heaps of laundry stacks of dishes mounds of paper and folders it can be overwhelming it's not that far off from the feeling of being in the pile on a football field when there's a loose ball our Tom Rinaldi takes us inside the pile for the full sensory experience we see them everyday in daily life in different dimensions in varied shapes piles but in football after a fumble a pile is a churning seething living frame you just fumbled he's pretty nervous he taught everything you can to get that bug there's no rules from the bottom of Paulo the rest can't say it so it's a kids game on guys don't cut their nails I've got skin cows somebody tried to poke my eyes it gets dirty down there man you gotta do what you gotta do to get the ball bottom of the pile it is a dog-eat-dog world the better man will come out on top and it does not matter what he has to do to get there last season FBS teams combined to lose 1095 fumbles in all a lot of those lost amid a menagerie of limbs in extraordinarily tight quarters complete with a pile zone perfume hey I'd say on the big man's thing the big man's think that they'd all smell good it's not pretty just imagine how you feel going to the gym and then at shoulder pads that you've never washed and then manly Musk it's quite an aroma I can't breathe you can't move and all you hear is yelling and people breathing hard so occasionally a fart will slip out but you really don't want that bad get the ball if you can but get up and get out for sure as with any ecosystem the pile breeds not only a unique brand of survival but its own odd history's not a big sweat guy at the bottom of a pile I had a guy who was like a up towards the top and he was just dripping sweat and was going straight into my face mask I didn't like that at all like you really remember claim force and telling me a joke at the bottom of the pile whoo this is really romantic right now and I was just like what does a quarterback sneak they got the best of that and of course sometimes the pile doesn't form in a fumble it's the celebration of victory [Applause] we beat Notre Dame a double overtime and Tyrone swoosh jumps in the endzone and he wins the game for us so I throw on the ground but I went on the bottom so he's on top of me and I just feel like 200 pounds at a time it's just like and just piling on me feels like the happiest moment of my life there's also like wow I might die right now there's so much weight the whole team so next time you see a mound or a stack pass by a fever or a ward consider that special place where people aren't striving to reach the top all they want is to get to the bottom you might get some bumps and bruises here and there by then my grandma likes to think that it's all just beautiful and happiness in butterflies sorry grandma it's not [Music] [Applause] [Music] FCS playoff first-round action for Monmouth University the Hawks impressive leading Holycross 26 7 at the break well we talked at the outset about the importance of being an opportunistic defense and running the football and boy have they checked the boxes Monmouth 3 picks and Guerrero over 150 yards rushing yeah and 17 points off of those three picks it is almost impossible to win on the road - 3 and turnovers bob says he knows that Holy Cross has got to get that squared away if they want any chance of coming back on the road well Kenji Behar dealing with a leg injury but still able to get things done at quarterback for this moment ain't one the best in the country he really is but he got off to a slow start he was a little erratic earlier on they made a couple easy throws for him to get warmed up but it was not a good start and then he got injured after getting warmed up and playing great got injured and that's gonna be a storyline for the second half you see them wrapping him up for that compression and I expected us in a lot of blitzes that way to make a move find it great for a touchdown he got some help from Moore the run game and of course Guerrero and he see just not 100% now that limits his mobility big time no question and I admire his toughness and I expected a lien on a running game and their defense in the second half Evan pounds who picks to set the tone defensively yeah he's on his way to being an FCS Player of the Week when you get to pixel you see a lot of linebackers get their hands on ball but they don't always catch it when they get a chance close here they need to get him going he had a flash there where he made it in fact I think getting away from him was a problem I expect him to be a big part a game plan in the second half because he is a terrific football player he's an equalizer for them can make big plays and set them up and get everybody confidence in white jerseys as we look at the numbers obviously the turnovers are a big story but even terms of total yardage Monmouth's starting to crank things up one of the best offenses in the country there is no doubt about it they're great and we do that coming in another problem for Holy Cross is their one of seven on third down if you can't sustain drives against a team like this they will swallow you up with their momentum that's another thing that's got to get cleared up in the second half will the Crusaders have an answer dance work to do so far the Hawks trying to stay perfect at Kessler field in front 26 7 third quarter right around the corner [Music] the wind picking up as the date rolls on here at Monmouth University a 26-7 lead for the Hawks FCS playoff first-round action and right before halftime Pond snacking on three points how about Matt mascara use the elements to your favor when they win yeah just like your pitching wedge you don't know see but you see that bit now what I like I like a little swag out of my kick look at look at mascara I've got ice water in my veins Trey bender this is what I do for a living sir well not quite yet young fella you still in college but I like the swag 13 is 17 on field goals this year that gives them that extra boost as we head to the second half how about some scores first-round playoff action and you've got a San Diego team Pioneer League champions trying to pull off the upset in the dome in Iowa that's one of the matchups no question about it and these games all start with a first kickoff to kick off this 2019 playoff season which I take great pride in kick this off with you partner but a lot of games coming up a lot of different matchups from different parts that country teams catching flights in that usually catching Missouri Valley Conference figures prominently the Big Sky having a big year there you see the numbers between the two quarterbacks degenhardt really struggled Considine had a little success there in the second quarter I think his teammates need to make more plays for Considine he's has not been bad his numbers are worse than what his play is because his teammates unfortunately hasn't hasn't stepped up but that's the bad news the good news is it's the second half you've got an injured quarterback on the other side he got number one who's healthy on your team one of the better play makers in FCS you got a chance to make a historic comeback in the playoffs Crusaders will get the football dopant out this second half and Clint quarter buyer had a couple of big returns the first half here he is again he's got one of the bright spots across the 35 yard line and excellent return for the senior he's been the MVP the game he's been consistently excellent in kickoff returns as well as his blockers they've done a great job that drives start average of the Crusaders is as good as it gets now can you capitalize though that's the problem can you continue to move the football once you set up your fourth appearance third in the NCAA playoffs last time in 2009 crusaders some work to do down by 19 as they start from the 36 yard line handoff codes here bet in the backfield and dropped for a loss and that was Nick shoemaker he has played well up there the sophomore defensive end he has and we saw him involved and it's not early for this sack for his teammate Kurt Armour this time he does it all by himself and if you don't get blocked ray bender guess what you better make the play alright and they turned him free but you see a lot of times on athletic defensive linemen get turned free and not are able to not able make the play against a terrific back like cozier but he makes it happen loss of a yard second 11 play action for Considine spots Gilliam in the crease he's got a first down cross midfield to the 49 yard line he's our go-to guy the big play receiver and trae think back to the first quarter those plays weren't there for them because they hadn't established a run but once you established the run that play action has to be honored and now the drops of the linebackers going to be a little slower then that's gonna create throwing windows and like we've said Considine has not been bad he's been good with his throws he just needs guys to help and step up and do their job and that's what happened on that third down here's cozier dragged down from behind to the 45-yard line a pickup of four and that was shoemaker hanging on well you better catch him there he floats through the hole and hurry he hasn't had the chance to get an open field but maybe twice all right in Patrick Murphy I like what he's doing early in this second half you got to make number one a big part of what you're gonna do if you want to come back second and six winner will face James Madison the number two overall seed next weekend at JMU that ball deflected and Constantine's pass is incomplete he tried to get it to cozy Rover on the sidelines now it's third in line and cozy was open that's a great tip there and luckily was not intercepted but see how he's a part of ball game now you see how they get in number one he's available to you why not use them if I had a Porsche I'd Drive it I don't have one all right they don't pay me enough but if I had a Porsche I would certainly Drive it and you think they're down at six they have struggled just one of seven so far that's not looking for the play call that's a snap as time delivers a strike for cursed out it's killing him again he's looking number eighty-eight sway he's kind of the security blanket over there another big play for a first down now he comes up limping and if you think of it Gilliam has been the guy who's been consistent with his hands today that's nothing near but a skinny post a tart pick up he's able to beat time Barry not a lot players a beaten table area today or even all season let's keep an eye on 88 to see if he's able to come back he's had a big game first down to the 37 to quarterback keeper cassadine puts his head down and then he's pulled and pushed backwards by Tyrese rights don't see that often from the quarterbacks for hold it cross big frame at six sixth interesting a guy on the quarterback option if you're not going to drive to poor stand fake it to the force all right and get everybody looking at that force then you pull it out and you don't have to be a super athlete like say Lamar Jackson to get yards it's the porch they got everybody's attention you pull it out I love to ball security right there from Considine to arms on the ball look more like a dune buggy than some stuff stuff but it did get some yardage second down and five while resting at the 32 yard line initial series see reporter handoff cuz here straight ahead and not much doing maybe two yards third and an important free coming up here as they test the middle that time we talked about when your backup quarterback comes in your game the offensive line your wide receivers and your running back have to all now elevate their play you've got to support the guy make sure he has the confidence and the offensive line is going to start there for Holy Cross if they can start to dominate this football game the offense will start to move and you got a shot big third down here though as you said they strutted got one of those drives Considine slap pattern and that's a first down a good strike right there into the hands of Dean Nagel to move the sticks now remember constant I two games at Wake Forest in 2018 they love his upside just hasn't had a lot of reps this year yeah but I like right now the rhythm he's getting into great balance unless he's got a big long delivery that's something I'd like to see him shorten up as he matures and gets more opportunities but when that ball does get releases coming out of hot and generally accurate generate from st. Augustine Florida tenth play this Drive play fake for the end zone Asante no did not have possession with the foot down no now ie resides a body had six you just need one foot down and physics on Timmy's catch that's that's a touchdown when do you see simultaneous catch being called [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's a touchdown folks I'm sorry and I'm a defensive player and I don't think simultaneous should be touchdown but that's how it's being called ever since I've been involved with football he's Peter down both are both of them yeah I would be very surprised and I've been surprised before every place but I would be very surprised if this calls not overturn it's the old tie goes to the runner in baseball well tie goes to the receiver in football he's got two hands on the ball the defender only has one arm both feet are down the balls not moving and you heard the officials say it's a simultaneous catch what are we looking for that's Justin Terry who's their top cover guy passes break it up this year set a Big South record seven passante and they're on the board for the second time so let's think of how this started we had another big kickoff return that set the table and now Holy Cross is able to capitalize and I can't say enough about constant things just coming in and continue to work he's got an interception but it was off a tip ball that should have been a catch and you got to start saying okay this guy's played well and I see why they inserted him the ball game so earlier in the first quarter santé his sixth receiving touchdown this year and the extra point is blocked Derrick Eng can't not convert on the p80 and that was a good defensive play right there by don't want Cooper blocking that kick but a great catch by him sought a touchdown to open up the third we have a 13 point game i'ii recite a's touchdown grab drawing holy cross within 13 points of Monmouth here in the third quarter special teams has kind of made a statement here on both sides in this one a blocked extra point but that was a big grab there as he had to really fight for that ball in the corner yeah and not he's really good at that you know and he needed to make that play because he owed his quarterback 1 foot alligator arms Anna turnover that led to three points for Mama Thurley er so Holy Cross trying to stay within striking distance here's you look at Cody Wilkinson their kickoff specialist and punter has a teed up at the 35 yard line Holy Cross 7 and 5 5 and 1 in the Patriot League and Champions a couple conference champions meeting here in the FCS first-round playoff action on the return big hit put on Brandon batts and he's knocked down how about the special teams impact in this one if third of the game is special teams a lot of fans over look how big it is and if you look at Holy Cross they have absolutely destroyed momma's and special teams the quick kick excellent call and very well executed the return game has been nothing short of amazing and Catina short set up that offense for Holy Cross and they finally took advantage of it but there's the block field goal by Holy Cross and in Monmouth he's the exit points I keep we fight about that and then mama shows up with a block extra point at the end and good pursuit there by the holy cross defense as they go to Guerrero and they're ready for him loss of the yard back to the 27 yard line you know he's a marked man and here in the second half no question about it and you heard uncle mo right yeah you ever heard of him uncle mo momentum yeah well he's now pitching a tent over on the Holy Cross sidelines and Jacob Dobbs has continues to be consistently excellent one of the best freshman linebackers I've laid my eyes on in the FCS level leader in tackles tackles for loss sacks as well for the Crusaders here's an end-around bobbled and hauled in by Lonnie Moore and a flag is thrown as he's run out of bounds and they're gonna back him up here it's gonna be holding try those outside receivers are on the hot seat on jet sweeps can they block without holding and when you see an official told a flag on the sidelines on a play like that you know what's coming back holding off it's number 86 10-yard penalty from the previous spot second down that's Shawn Clarke the tide and the guilty party here and we gave Shawn Clarke a lot of love earlier because he sustained the block in the open field and and there he turned the defender when you see a body whip around like that that was in effect that was jeans got to turn him around and now his Scott I don't know if they call it right guy it's got the other other tight end correctly because which Shawn Clarke Dean was pancake his guy that was a good legal tough football play his Scott they grabbed on the outside and torque the body the defendant whenever the stripe starts see a body torque like that that Flags coming out how about this empty set five receivers for the top of the screen for Kenji Behar I would blitz this there's no way he could show movement if how hurt he is and set up the screen on the far sideline wide receiver screen does that credd way that get some of that yardage back still a third and long coming up here and that shows why I'm in the booth with you because if you don't blitz it or if you do blitz it that that wide receiver screen can be a killer to you they play zone coverage easy defense right there now you mentioned Holy Cross might want to bring some pressure in the second half this is the ideal time to do it third 30 and the question is is Zeff Gallo gonna actually go for this first down I mean because you don't want to turn the ball over and this party down and number 25 can get you a first down by Florida too and he's available choice for hopper to get another way flag is throwing I bailed him out if that's on Stefanik that's a bailout there there's no way the receiver is going to get to the football and that would give them a first down Stefanik was in man coverage I think they might have caught him with a grab man coverage you're in the hot seat is that left arm hooking the receiver can't see it there but it appeared it was in there you cannot hook the receiver with that back arm nice job a place out on coming through you got keep that back on to your side it's a natural tendency to hook the receiver and the ref sees it the flags coming out so the drive continues from the 34 pull hard a short wall deep blue flag is thrown and it's incomplete he wanted to stretch the peel of Lonnie Moore between the hash marks and a penalty flag comes in and I'm okay with John Smith getting that penalty because that's a touchdown if he doesn't slow that receiver up and that's the difference between the NFL and college that's a spot foul and it failed the ball would be weighed down here in college easy go ahead and hold them don't let him get the touchdown will move it up ten yards live to play another day now what I've seen is an adjustment from Jeff Gallo offensively that was a little half roll when Mac's protect T now you keep your quarterback from having to move around that's what you're now countering what you think is going to happen from the Holy Cross defense we said they probably bring pressure well you go ahead and max protect to land route hold the ball let these guys get downfield and make big plays into those blitzes and again well hard dealing with a leg injury sustained in the first half not as mobile as they're used to seeing back there as they run the ball straight ahead for a couple of yards and that's it third down coming up and he's become a pocket passer now a guy that's known for keeping plays alive with his feet and that limits the paint Award finalist it does but he can win from the pocket he's been doing it all year when the play breaks down he has enough athleticism to keep the play going but he's a guy that can kill you from the pocket so that's not a huge Iseman to question is can you match my tech and keep him comfortable back there now Justin super the right tackle shaken up here after that run second team all-big South tackle Monmouth with the football and the lead 905 to go winner heads to the FCS second-round junior right tackle Justin subha off the field on his own power and they'll go without their offensive tackle for the time being Monmouth leading 26:13 looking at a second down just shy of midfield a good response to open up the second half from Holy Cross with the touchdown drive Kent Behar accompanied answer that here I would say that handing the ball off 2:25 throwing easy screens who pitches at 25 it doesn't you can come out in and crutches as a quarterback if you can hand the ball off to number 25 is all I'm saying 80 carries 152 yards for the FCS leading rusher pete guerrero the junior from Lyndhurst New Jersey looking at a second and 9 here brother 46 here he come mehar stays in the pocket delivers the strike for a first down it's Lonnie Moore Moore's had a big game he now has five catches they moved the sticks of that one how about the protection number 25 we talked about his running ability big play to me look at him step up and block the Blitzer that's a complete football player he's a track guy no no he's a football player folks they go quick snap here on first down for harm first dead catch Treadway inside the 25 they go little tempo there and it pays off what does the temple do it forces the defense to be vanilla now you can't call up and down up those exotic blitzes and here they go again with tempo can't get the personnel you want as they now control it with tempo as we do see now Holy Cross is getting some guys out is mama tha's getting some guys at two so when the offense does up you got to allow the defense to beat us up - but tempo allows you to control who's on the field defensively and generally it keeps the defensive coverage is vanilla so you quarterback and slice them up the hard out 12 of 20 130 yards as they near the red zone trying to answer a Holy Cross score here the third quarter from the end zone incomplete couple defenders out there Quintin parm heath is a big kid 6-4 to 30 tight end looking for one there he falls a little too far he had late safety covers coming over the top so the ball needed to be on time and on target it was on time but just out of the reach of the big receiver but we'll be seeing now the confidence in Bihar he can throw from the pocket we know he's them of it that's when the pass rush comes if there's no rush he will kill you from the pocket because he's a disciplined quarterback he wants to throw first then run numbers dominated by behemoths here's Guerrero tried to turn the corner cuts it back to the 21 Joe Lange the junior safety on the tackle flag is on the field though you see the calls holding again the penalties are starting to mount up for the mom of hawks holding off number 86 it's a tie dad to get shot Clark this time win or lose I guarantee you bob says he is not gonna be happy with the yard is he's left on the field on his special teams play and with some of these penalties and didn't see a whole lot here now I've seen more egregious holes not call you were held a few times I understand looks like a miss it also felt that way second I said yeah the officials didn't set it at 20 from the 34 here comes the pressure draw girl he wants a touchdown he's got a touchdown for the second time today you mentioned the Dolphins when I played for the Dolphins was being coached by dit one of the greatest if not the greatest D lineman ever and Joe green he said listen there's a downside to everything you do defensively okay yeah you weaken blitz and try to get pressure on the quarterback and get the run lanes secure but if you let the cat out the door the cat will put you in a torture chamber forget about it folks in the open field there is no one in the white jersey that's going to tackle this guy 101 it's just not going to happen so if you do blitz you better have someone on the edge to keep him inside because if you don't bye-bye first a 68 yard touchdown run now 34 yards and they'll go for two here caught by Lonnie Moore and they had two more on the board great job by the offensive line to give him the time to see that guy coming across Lonnie Moore but again if you don't bliss and make the play in the box it's a house call by number 25 Pete Guerrero [Music] the FCS leading rusher Pete Guerrero has out gain Holy Cross in this one after a second touchdown run a 34 13 lead candidate for the Payton Award as we look at some other scores going on right now an FCS first-round action how about the Redbirds of Illinois State great tradition out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference they're on the board in Austin Peay up seven three and you Albany they got a nice thing coach Gattuso up there's got a nice thing going in upstate New York has gotten them in the playoffs and it's gonna be a tight ballgame against Central its Monmouth team beat Albany 38:35 in overtime back in week 3 on a mascara game-winner you know T if I'm looking for their 11th win of the season comfortable lead here as that's a fair catch made by Matt burns near the 20-yard line so that's an adjustment by mom if in their special teams coach Sam door said he's tired of seeing that ball getting run down their throat on kickoff returns until you go sky ball right and then you force the up backs to have to handle the ball and now they won't in screws and obviously they Ray but a fair catch that ball still pretty good field position but not great an excellent field position like they've been getting before now you mentioned how they've got to get number one involved dominic cozier he has put up some good numbers 12 carries 73 yards but when you're down to 21 evils he also needs to throw the football you can't rely just to run yeah you do but I'll say this straight when you your home run hitter handing the ball sometimes your best play there's a home run shot downfield and it's incomplete a flag is thrown they were looking for Derrick Mountain the tide add right down the middle of the field could quite hang on but a penalty flag comes in I like mountain he can really want for his size when you're 250 pounds you're getting down the seam and running past safeties that means you can run yes and that is a good call pass interferences you see the defenders early you know it helped up the tight end prominently a part of this offense yeah he's getting man covers you see Tyrese right there good look at right he was early with his hands but when you know you're gonna get man coverage against safeties and you gotta gotta can run he's on weapon for an offense we've seen great tight ends at all levels prosper when the coordinator knows how to give him the football first down at the 40 after the penalty here at the backfield by curler now about the 260 pounds eager tackle from Acme PA and he tells me no no no the new tombow no no no and again initially blocked but these are active front guys basically for both teams they do not stay block very long and I really appreciate that his next defensive lineman hard to block those guys up there a lot of them were part-timers last year including armor but the defensive staff really loves their play in the trenches second and 11 Pat's a deep ball again far sideline and it's a tight end but again Mountain can't hang on as he was challenged by Tyreese right over there what you're getting a lot of man Street coverage and you weren't getting that earlier you were getting zone you get in three dudes own right now you get man free and the reason is because you're able to get the ball to your running back dominate cozier and make someplace right great job of getting that ball on the ground great fight there by the defensive back at the entire reach right that that battle continue continues with heating Mountain but when you able to run the football it does more things than just get you yardage it forces the defense to have to adjust now they're going eight-man front you got man free cards in the back side and that's why these receivers are stricken downfield man coverage they take cozier off the field Oliver and as a Considine drops it off underneath it's John John John Roberts he's gonna show the first down they bring it down 446 hold on a pelvic flag coming in our boys in the defensive backfield potentially a huge call here P no way these goals there's no so is that ball court not allow Spanish maybe I missed it so four down four and three and they'll bring the punting team out there early decision they decide to punt that ball that's really good third down defense by mom with allow the ball to be caught in front of your rally up and make a tackle Derek in who has doubled as the place kicker and the putter today standing at his 33 yard line Beauty turns over Bearcats called for and made at the 10-yard line how about the Holy Cross special teams today yeah they've been great unfortunately haven't been able to capitalize on a lot of opportunities they have but that phase has been truly excellent here's the third down play prior to the punt maybe I missed something but boy I thought this ball is caught beyond the line of scrimmage it's close okay I mean you know that that's very close and I'm okay full-speed saying that it was caught behind and the rule is when the balls thrown in court behind a line of scrimmage there is no downfield pass interference it becomes like a screen play if that ball had been on the upfield side of the line of scrimmage that definitely been passed affairs and were to move the offense back just under six minutes to go here third quarter Monmouth a comfortable twenty one point lead had a great effort from their running back Pete Guerrero with 186 on the ground gets his number call Guerrero to the outside Joe Lange had him for a ball but he bounces off of them and out of bounds positive play there he picks up close to 5 yeah and that gets you five or six but boy the beautiful elusiveness an open field running and vision and quickness from this guy is there's something to behold I'm he alluded three would-be tacklers to get that six starts rare out with 19 career 100-yard games he's been over the 200 yards bar a couple times this year three 200 yard games they're coming again and Behar knows it straight ahead Guerrero push down up to the 22 you got to think we're gonna see a heavy dose at number 25 and now a late flag comes in yeah it's gonna be on your senior captain I believe and Galena if I'm not mistaken gotta be smart the right guard you just mentioned and your fifth year senior captain you're the leader out there well he avoided a penalty there now the defendant you know what I take that back and the defender is continuing to play after the guys down that's that's not a good call I apologize to the Galena family and to you John you were protecting yourself the defender was doing a little too much but you know his old saying in football is always the second guy that gets to call play action traveling for a first down boy that was delivered on the money great touch pass from kechi Behar it was and then he beats John Smith on the outside and what you're gonna see is gonna see really good position from Smith but then he loses sight of the ball and that's understandable when you're playing man coverage but the touch was excellent and now they'll go over the middle and say go hurry up and they spot Treadway again number 80 getting involved in this offense and you can see why this team has spent so dangerous this season averaging over 36 per game smart by Gallo to go up tempo to play fake again it could play there comes the flag three straight pass plays to tread way they have found something and they're gonna get John Smith for interference here just a straight nine route throws a 50/50 ball and gallo right now [Applause] offensive coordinator gallo right now is hot everything he's calling seems to be smart and you just got to be disciplined with your hands you can't panic you're in good shape Smith I understand it completely won earlier against you just stay disciplined play you're a guy look back when he looks if you look back early you're gonna lose sight you wanna reach out to get contact and when you do it's a good chance they're gonna catch you first after twenty three great ballots to fifteen rushing 181 passing so far for the Hawks try to break this one open can't say enough about the adjustment Gallo is may the up tempo has kept the defense Vennela and the ball is coming out quick was in the gates any problems with being able to move pistol look here I'll play action again for the end zone and it complete not Treadway that time it was Lonnie Moore on the pasture out there picking on John Smith thrown with the fade route 27 is on the hot seat AJ Farris the center their offensive linemen have had some problems here yeah he's a senior as well and what that tells me is that was an RPO that was a run for everybody else and Kenzie Behar like the looki guy and he tried to sneak in a fade route on a run look both teams do a heavy dose of it nobody does it better than mama how about going right back to that st. play here maybe on the other side of the field and I like 25 is it he's gone too long without touching it it will be Guerrero's straight ahead keep him honest with that run as he picks up a couple of yards and the other thing here is if he can at least get three out of this drive you're already up 21 it gives you your kicker at least a better chance if at least to move the ball forward yeah and a for possession ballgame with just four minutes left in the quarter boy that guy that makes it really tough on the opposing team Kevin callahan 162 wins eight among active FCS head coaches and wins what a career he's had if I'm Holy Cross I need I need a big stop I needed some sort of negative play a TfL a sack we gonna try to back them up and get them out of field goal range I'm making a really tough King high pressure evades it momentarily now he throws just gets rid of the football how about that toughness that's mental toughness a you know physical toughness everybody's ailing with physical tough the ability to play with pain is about mental toughness and watch his instincts take over I'm gonna spin out of this thing with a bad hammer and he's limping like all get-out but he doesn't care he's trying to do what it takes to win a ballgame at home in the playoffs as a captain he hasn't won his season and his college football career in it was Benton Whitley giving chase holds the bodhnath career passing records captain fifth-year cedar from Baltimore as amazing career trying to get some points on this drive on a third and 13 can a crusader defense muster up pressure again when they need it and that's deflected and completely upfront that it was a marquis boy in there yeah he's playing well we've called his name a couple times and when they run quick screens like that you're not gonna get the pressure but what you got to do is the defensive lineman is get your hands up into throwing lanes and that's a great job by ebo 6-3 262 pounds sophomore he's just scratching the surface on how good he's gonna get now Matt mascara has already converted from 47 before half-time this widened from 43 yards out and it's good mm-hmm the senior as you mentioned earlier ice in the veins expensi advantage I salute you young man and you don't hear me talk about these guys very often because they they drink a lot of Gatorade during practice they don't get out there don't do a lot of sweating but you got one job and that's to come in and make kicks and he has been crazy good today first-team all-big South last year second team all-big south this year and what a luxury to have it postseason play that puts a lot of pressure now on cold across because he is again now a full possession ballgame right and now the clock you're not only playing against mom with a few Holy Cross now the clock is your enemy and so that that's in an environment like this against an opponent who rarely loses at home in fact just one loss since being in this Stadium boy boy this is this is really tough eight game winning streak on the line logins to school history looking like it could be nine in a row as there's that sky kick you talked about all their builded buyback barrettes across it 30 Williams into a Monmouth defender Matt Castronovo and that was a big collision right there yes it was normally the defender delivers that hit how about the offensive player and you want to be a cost football player yeah do you do you really yeah get your pass down low low man wins and you got delivered a blow that's why I love defense I didn't want to be to hit eat I want to be the hitter figure you saw the defender was to hit II that's not good Castronovo does have that interception he had a big moment the first half for Monmouth a lot of work to do now for Holy Cross you're not gonna get it back in one play let's see how they approach this from the 36 that's it a deep ball incomplete runner day a year a saute down the near sideline we continue to see man coverage was very interesting to me because the Crusader offensive coordinator Patrick Murphy has shown that he's going to be aggressive against his man coverage result we've also seen the wide receivers get behind these defensive backs in man coverage very interesting that mobic is sticking with that coverage at this point ballgame see the Holy Cross offense not as prolific as Monmouth but under their season numbers so far and they've had a tough time slowing down the Hawks offense cassadine that's a short game for a hot day as he's dragged down by Castronovo I'm on three deep hero bases the rest of the game if I'm honest I'm not gonna allow anybody get behind me maybe as wide as the widest and as deep as the deepest and force Considine to read it out and throw the ball underneath and come up and make the tackles I don't want guys running free in the trail position in man coverage two receivers split left junior looks for the play call for the sideline pressure coming sets of fires incomplete intended for the tight end mountain he missed badly their fourth down and one of the few times we've seen that you know Considine hasn't really thrown a bunch of bad balls today he had time nothing really made that throw errant he just missed him flat-out missed him so 2:15 to go of a third quarter Monmouth starting to dominate on both sides of the ball it's a great look at it coverage is good but that ball is placed on the inside of the receiver thrown out in front of him he's got a chance to make a good catch it had been a contested catch but it would have been a catchable ball you throw it behind him like that there's no chance Derek Anne gets in spot away a wobbler from the 28 yard line Morales comes in and makes a fair catch at the Hawks 27 37 13 Monmouth and this is a great story this Hawks program one of the best seasons in school history behind Kevin Callahan two years ago they made the FCS playoffs lost in the first round last year eight and three just missed the playoffs despite a loss to an FBS team and Princeton and Kennesaw State good teams but this could be a year where you know already you get a win here it's it's big for the program and they're gonna get maybe a chance against James Madison nest and don't think that this doesn't help recruit it right when young high school players can you know pull out their tablet and watch you on ESPN 3 playing well at home they get to start thinking wow that brain looks pretty good AHA and complete floated that one up there looking for Treadway he looks to number 80 a lot and he has six catches 76 yards so far today flags on the field drive through pads holding number 20 first out I think they're getting a Walter Reynolds for the hold here the corner and obviously they'll have to keep a close eye on Kenji Behar not a hundred percent with that leg injury to stand in the first half he's still good even at what ninety ninety percent that's right and he's probably not even ninety but again if you if you can keep the pocket clean for him then it doesn't really matter obviously the if they go on to win this game the medical staff the training staff will will have to step up and be the MVP during the week to get him where he needs to be and you see right there an incredible day here the postseason for Guerrero some guys have great postseason stats and postseason performances but don't show up in the biggest games not for twenty five and he just got to that 200 yard mark inside he had the big run couple touchdown runs four scores it's not just about sprinter speed with his guy yeah he's got vision he runs it up inside he's got patience he sets up blocks well and if you recall one of the best plays I saw today it was him stepping up and blocking a linebacker on the Blitz he's a complete football player but obviously when you get him in space and he gets a step it's over alright just shut the door it's hard to watch if you're a defender look at the elusiveness look at the fluidity of movement it's just it's really special to watch and you don't see a lot of track guys having the ability to wiggle there's straight line guys he's turned himself as we said before through a lot of hard work and desire into a football player who has to be accounted for on every single play manny christian the left guard the injured monmouth hawk here senior from newark new jersey and that those guys up front have done a tremendous job as well you've got a lot of veteran leadership with four seniors at a junior on that front line for coach callahan a lot of those guys are newer guys they've lost a lot of starters last year and they've been able to replace them with what sort of first-year players who have been around a program but hadn't played a whole lot how about this you've got two first-team all-big south guys and two second team all-big south guys under offensive line this year yeah that Network 80% of your line all come from inside yeah but the others a senior he's 310 pounds that's right and obviously that has gone a long way to get open lanes for Guerrero he's taking full advantage all year second and eight at the 39 yard line the Hawks in control here on home turf trying to stay unbeaten and move to the FCS second round in the playoffs they'll go back to Guerrero who eclipsed goes over 200 yards now from Holy Cross I've gotta find a way to hit that ball get the ball out give it all since a chance well we talked about Behar and Guerrero to the best players in the country that's the first thing that comes to mind but this is a tough defensive team and they turn you over three interceptions today and they're opportunistic in you could say on both sides of the ball and in it's complimentary football because when you get those turnovers what do you do with it we've seen 17 points off of turnovers today three of ten on third down hard goes through his tight end it's caught by Clinton Parham and that's a first down across midfield now is it me or is since the hamstring issue as mahara got you more accurately I'm more comfortable in the pocket I don't know it maybe it's just me but boy I haven't seen him throw an errant pass since since he's been hurt it's not just you he's now fifteen or twenty six after a slow start 191 yards and the touchdown sometimes when you know you're compromised physically your mental concentration goes up and I think that's what we're seeing right now and you could say a lot of Hawks fans and say hey this isn't there a plus effort but still 412 yards total offense and they're starting to round into four baozi near the fourth quarter and you got another core to go right that full 12 so that that's going to go up [Music] three of the books at Monmouth University the Hawks impressive looking for their 11th win how about Guerrero how about him I'll take him on my team folks speed to burn Monmouth trying to dominate this game already up 37:13 as we enter the fourth quarter getting better and better as the game wears on the winner will advance to take on the number two overall seed James Madison next weekend when the top scorer of offenses at the FCS level if this is Monmouth that could be a shootout it really could you know Madison 42 points a game is to put their average in the outscored opponents by average of 26 points per game he save continues for lovers not when you got to go to harrison birthday rolling left is Behar that is a strike for a first down jump mobility there kept by Lonnie Moore the chains this relief shows the diversity of this offense yes they have the best runner in college football but they can control the clock with the passing game updating some scores here Northern Iowa continues delete 7 nothing at the Dome Illinois State and the Missouri Valley flexing their muscle a little bit early stages 4th quarter here findeth looking to add to their lead Guerrero stumbles that time 25 carries 203 yards Wow and in Westlake and I'm not saying he is but much like Barry Sanders was you could I just keep giving him a ball he's gonna have some plays like that negative plays lose a yard 1 yard gain but you just keep giving it to him it's just a matter of time before it makes one guy miss one guy's out of his gap and he explodes the defenses he was a second team FCS all-american in 2017 last year led the conference in yards rushing this year maybe the Payton Award winner will say he's a finalist here's Behar under pressure get rid of it somehow some way don't know how he did a couple guys in the backfield and he looks like he's okay whipping but does a good job you around the football what an effort what a competitor this guy is the toughness we talked about he understands the situation I don't want to take the sack boy this guy is something else I've been very impressed I was impressed coming in a game because of the stats of what I saw on film but boy since getting hurt I've just gotten more and more respect for this guy a lot of guys now tuck the tail and go away when they're in pain not him you saw the numbers they are a great finishing team perfect when they lead through three quarters trying to put the finishing touches on this one third and 10 from 34 Holy Cross showing blitz they back off hard deep ball Treadway nope good coverage that time and the guy that's been picked on all day long John Smith made a nice play and he played his coverage properly they showed bliss like you said then converted to a 3d look they thought they had that nine route down the field but that's against three deep and you know when you're playing zone coverage three deep and you're John Smith you can't let a guy get behind you you gotta be in great position he was in that and then he almost made the pig kudos to Smith for coming back and make a nice play that's fourth and ten at the 34 they won't try the long field goal here they're gonna go for it or it could be a quick kick out of there we'll see the hard road look to throw it to the far sideline catch made it is Parham and looks like he did not get to the first down marker and they're gonna give it up on downs grant Holloman that's how you play big-time zone coverage as a corner he take away the deep ball come up and make a solid tackle and wait for the cowboy to finish him off Monmouth in control of Crusaders have the football back a lot of work to do with 1331 to go Bob Chesney in his second season at Holy Cross winning championships at the Division three and Division two levels before coming to Holy Cross and winning a championship in the Patriot League this year running into a tough opponent here first round FCS playoffs against Monmouth and there's a big Gator for cozier up to the 44 yard line they have not seen enough of dominic cozier that's his 14th carry he's nearing the century mark what a year he's had and I think when Kevin Callahan looks at this fill tomorrow he's gonna say we didn't get it to that guy enough we didn't give them enough opportunities to blow the game open with his speed quick as envisioned that's just a shame first now at the 44 yard line [Applause] Considine rolling away some pressure just getting rid of the football ii intent coming up Considine a guy that's buying or bidding for time next year he's a junior Degenhart also a junior so that set up an interesting battle next season for Holy Cross yeah and this is season it doesn't continue and this is just one game to be fair to today get heart this is just one game right and they're gonna battle this out in the spring and next summer there'll be a competition it'll make both guys better setting up a screen and that's not going anywhere Jack jeweled bottled up good play by day client grinds a guy we talked about in the open second team all-big South they're the leading tackler he beat the block from the inside out and makes a nice play that balls got a feeling a little bit lower it's all about timing on those little screen plays like that that ball is gonna get in the belly of the receiver quickly so he can read out the run lanes when you have to go up and make a play like that it just slows the entire execution of the play down grabs a quiet guy but intense as a player very physical at that position third and 11 Considine underneath oh goodness catch by Konnor candidate torn queue and its cries look at that I mean we talked about when he hits he goes backwards that's his own coverage and you come across the middle in zone coverage that's a superhighway full of collisions and that is a legal hit that's the type of tackle that's gonna save our game all right there's no head-to-head here that's leading with the shoulder nice and low and explosive through the hips well that was set up for a highlight for number 50 that was textbook fourth and floor now Considine catch by John John Roberts he's close they needed the 46 I think he's got it the stick he's got it a little guy at five nine 180 hangs on and to move the chains love the route how often do you see guys running stick routes and don't run it beyond the sticks to get the first down right great job of running that exactly where he needed to be terrific awareness and then making the catch and taking the hit from the back and hold onto the ball Considine out 13 of 27 112 yards near sideline he could play what a Dean Nagle the junior it was almost a phenomenal throw right there he's got some arm talent this guy I'd like to see him I said before shorten up that release but the arm strength is there I see why they like the guy and look at this get over the underneath defender he almost dropped it in you've got something to work with right there and number 16 well when you're recruited by Wake Forest you know the potential is there to be a really good player and next year could be a year that we could really blossom second and 10 little shovel pass here's cozier inside the 40 cuz here's a first down inside the 30 and down to the 23 yard line it's not gonna move the pile what an effort from the senior my question is why we gotta be down twenty four to seven coach to run net you know that's the question I'm asking this was available to you in the first quarter second quarter third quarter goes here again spins inside the 15 dragged down by Kyle Mullen the senior defensive end and this does not mop-up duty type performance he he's been doing this all year just ask the guys in the Patriot League and there's a reason why he's the offensive player of the year in that conference he was lethal every single week go get a breather here Myles Alexander now at the running back spot [Applause] tonight fools everybody and Holy Cross says hang on this one isn't over yet touchdown and even though number one wasn't in the game the only reason that it's working is because they're respected in the run game all of a sudden and they gotta go for two here they're thinking is three touchdowns three two-point conversions and get it to 16 they get one right here read option and he sees a defender being a little bit hesitant he technically stayed outside the defenders a little bit hesitant I'm wondering if that was not even an option that's just a straight bootleg fake either way he gets a touchdown his second one of the day he can skip the sets the Considine egg getting better and better as this game wears on gold for two now for the corner annickap when he wanted a yearís at a and they fail on the two pointer 10:23 to go 37 19 game good good play fake here by number 16 boy he's not known for his legs but guess what a little trick I'm a little full of a little magic you can get to the corner and like you said hold it cross it [Applause] [Music] FCS playoff first-round action Matt consonants touchdown run draws Holycross a little bit closer the winner will go on the road and take on the number two overall seed James Madison be careful what you wish for look at the numbers this season they have been outstanding for multiple years now they've got terrific athletes at the skilled position they're well coached and they don't screw it up themselves and like I said they are all scoring it for opponents 26 points a game now they reminding the Buffalo Bills back in the 90s right yeah just consistently great but they kept running into juggernaut in the Super Bowl well the juggernaut is North Dakota State the Bison has had their numbers if it wasn't for the Bison we talked about a team that probably has three or four straight national champions but those teams appear to be on a collision course yet again we'll see how it plays out Holy Cross drawing within 18 they failed on the two-point play but this is a team that set a tremendous season seven and five Patriot League champs see if they could pull off another onside kick we spot that in the first step is obviously mom is ready for it this time yeah a different situation it was a surprise deal there now mom if is setting up with their hands team but doesn't necessarily mean that because you know it's coming that you can get your hands on that football safely we'll take a break coach Callahan and Bachmann in control this is FCS first-round play second round right around the corner the winner here moves on to meet James Madison @jm you keep your eye on Montana that's where we'll be Mozilla bundle up partner the Grizzlies waiting on the winner of Villanova and Southeastern Louisiana and some good football teams they're hosting in that second round how did you give me some gloves for next week can you bring some you do you can get the along jobs and everything else why wear extra large if you're gonna help me please I'll put in some calls here is Wilkinson setting up to the onside kick he's got kicking to the other side of the field and that balls frame [Applause] and I think Monmouth covered it at the 47-yard line that was adventurous it was love to kick though you want that ball moving around some about these oblong shaped pig skins that once they start bouncing they can go anywhere and they're tough to handle and it's not who gets there first but who gets their last and it's Monmouth shot Clarke jumping higher you want that hop and then you want it low and it's there it's available for Mama excuse me for Holy Cross but unfortunately for Holy Cross Mama's gets it on if you're and if your mom anybody is one of the better special teams plays we've had it on a day we didn't have many may have lost the special teams battle today unfortunately for Holy Cross the scoreboard is in favor of mama Kenzie baharon company you see the rushing yardage they're just under there total yardage which their average this year is 487 per game just incredible pinball wizard kind of numbers this season play fake decree jet-set he did what a play by Terrence green the cheater for Philadelphia and that's a guy who went up and attacked the football there's no waiting for the football to find me to come down watch him go attack it and he's getting pushed around that's a heavily contested ball great coverage there by Smith and they continue to pick on John Smith but love that catch by Terrence green loved how he attacked that football and I think you're gonna see mama be very aggressive because if they score here I don't know that you'll see number 11 anymore they go to the air again and the catch made by Lonnie Moore what a compliment he is the green the physical guy more the fast jet sweep guy they've got all the intangibles on offense and they're both back next year they've got more eligibility that's the scary thing for all of the opponents next year for Mama every one of these guys are back except for Behar and they lose a couple offensive linemen first down to 17 clock ticking towards the nine-minute mark another score here might be the icing on the cake and venice's want guerrero down to the 10 as he picks up 7 on that carrot did you see the vision did you see the stop-and-go that's what you don't normally see track guys do they don't want to hit up in there they don't want the contact they don't want to play the game that way they want to play a track style of football anyone get the ball the outside they want to use their speed and quickness once again I continue to be impressed by number 25 vision and toughness up inside 26 carries 210 yards and a couple touchdown runs second and three from the 10 Guerrera nothing that time that was Whitley the end that was in there he's got to be tired though 27 carries now well he's a workhorse we talked to this idea about that this is what he does on a regular basis sure he's tired but he's really supremely condition he's built to get the ball over and over and over and that's just something you don't see in a guy that size 283 carries this year wow that's a lot 510 190 junior has been the meal ticket today low Wildcat action here straight snap to Guerrero inside the 5 and he has a first down he wants to put the exclamation point on this one yeah because I think they sense that this will be the last Drive they'll be playing and they'll begin to look ahead because they don't want to get number 25 hurt at all they don't want to get 11 even more injured the FCS leading rusher finalists for the Payton Award the FCS most outstanding offensive player two-time All Big South first team what a career [Applause] and that's what they're doing they're going back to the Wildcat here we'll hire off the field calls his own number and drives the pile forward inside the two yard line from Lyndhurst New Jersey and can you imagine him as an option quarterback at the high school level or gave everybody fits I'm sure had 306 all-purpose yards last week so what we're seeing is coming off a workhorse performance last week this guy just shows up every single game for it for this team and they ride them and we know that they're not gonna be the favorites next week there's no question about it they win the day they won't be the favors next week but James Madison's aren't the deal within the 25 mehar back hitting their head on straight ahead and just shy of the goal line where he wanted that one he did and hitting it up inside not a lot of lead in that pencil but for he's gonna give me everything you got now you'd better bring it because he runs a lot tougher and harder than 190 third a goal 29 carries 218 yards and trying to put the finishing touches on a victory here under six minutes to go taking mid time working the clock trying to make this game as short as possible but make no mistake they want to finish with seven and they're gonna go back to the Wildcat here direct snap to the all-american and how about the collision at the goal line with Liam Doran if you don't bring your feet on the tackle if you're not running your feet straight if you try to catch 25 you're gonna catch some heat that's exactly what happened on the goal line all he needed was a couple inches what a day but hit those numbers 31 carries he's over 200 yards again four times he's done it if they sent him out on the next drive I'm not gonna get him myself and bring off the field his day should be over scarers extra point makes it 44 19 give me a guy who wants to run outside but also give me a guy who's tough that run up inside and smell the goal line and get it crossing Mama's big at home 44 19 4419 monmouth in control ESPN's coverage of the FCS championship continues next weekend with a second round coverage on ESPN 3 for more info go to NCAA comm the official online home for all 90 NCAA championships all hawks here is matt mascara squibs that kick inside the 40-yard line try to prevent the long return and the Matt burns on the return the Crusaders have it now i watch that panda get lit during the break i want to see you dance like that now you know the Hawks are playing so well even hits it panda costumes are showing up here and I don't have the dancing skills alright compete well at least you're honest about it because I was going to pull something out and get some music going I was yeah I was gonna defer to you on that one alright well you know some stereotypes aren't aren't good and there's a stereotype about black guys and dancing I don't fit the stereotype I'm just say right now I gotten real stiff hips alright I'm just gonna be honest with you I'm looking forward to seeing you in Missoula next week dealing with the weather there that would be an interesting game in the second round of the FCS here's cozier on the carry inside the 40 and what a game he's had I mean you know you look at his numbers he's over a hundred yards rushing he's been good catching the ball in the backfield that's been the silver lining and I'm gonna be honest with you he's a he's not a hundred percent he's been giving me he's come off the field a couple times with his little ailments but I just I hate to sound like a broken record but where was this he's on your team use them quarterback keeper or Matt Considine as we near the five-minute mark here bully cross has really struggled they had some good moments on that Drive in the third quarter to kind of get them back into this game but it's been all Monmouth from their Considine Nagel can't hang on near the 12 yard line had to go low to get it I like the idea though back shoulder throw this is where I'm wondering how much has he been doing this in practice what kind of timing and we're kind of rhythm does he have with these receivers how many reps have you been getting you know that that's very close to being a well-executed play with more practice that'll be pretty good not third and eight to be short of the stick completion to Conor Kennedy the sophomore from Cleveland he'll be fourth down coming up now the ball inside the 30-yard line four down territory you get half of it there I'm okay with that fourth and very manageable opens up a lot of options for Patrick Murphy to try to pick this first down that's a time and that will be good enough for the first down hanging on where the grab there is Nagel and they moved to change full wide receivers and all current so they are running curl rocks at the sticks and let the quarterback decide who to throw the ball to he rented out well to a catchable ball first now [Applause] Considine and he overshoots his intended receiver Nagle you know it's a great year for the Holy Cross program a patriot league championship for the first time since 2009 a Bob Chesney has him on the right track they just ran into a really good football team today the turnovers didn't help but across the board Monmouth the better team here yeah they have some things to be proud of they've accomplished some some great things for this program but yes they didn't play their best there's no question about it the turnovers were really too much to overcome especially against the program who plays so well at home and you've got to come in and really play flawless football as it relates to ball control you got to get your own turnovers and then you gotta have a little bit of luck because this team's really good really good football team and gray and and as I said multiple times they play unbelievably well at home you try to halfback option pass that time to no avail third down from at Considine he'll lose cozier after this year but a lot of the other skill players are back tonight inside the five by John John Roberts first to go Susan's round the outside receiver and the inside slot they exchanged one goes in the other one goes out forcing the defensive backs playing in true position to keep up and it's hard especially you'll get much of a pass rush great execution first to go tonight rolling right this time Roberts for the touchdown his first touchdown as a crusader and that's a great way for the senior to go out he spent his freshman year at the u.s. Naval Academy did not play dad was a football guy at Cincinnati and he gets a touchdown here five nine one eighty five-year-old a quarterback out in a controlled way gets him out of the way of the pass rush and I continue to be impressed Considine throwing on the run very accurate and I love the way the Crusaders are competing traded and not giving up they're gonna play until zero zeros on the clock and that's all you can ask Considine down with three touchdown tosses they'll go for two slant and that's cop to the two-pointer Jack Jewell sophomore cashes in and it's 44 27 rubber on the outside got man coverage twins formation just two receivers to one side the inside receiver went second on the big play down the field in the first play but then now the inside receiver goes first tries to rub off or even pick the defender which is sort of quote-unquote illegal but you just want to get that defender in a trial position and all you need is just a couple yards for a two-point conversion excellent excellent execution we mentioned the eight road game for this Holy Cross program this year coming in they won six of their last eight games and you know these these are the kind of things even though likely in defeat so you can build on these these drives where people get involved players that are gonna be with them next year because you couldn't build on the positive hey we took our program to the FCS playoffs right I'm a young coach I'm starting to recruit the way I like to get the type of athletes in this program who fit what we do I'm learning my players the young ones we got a bunch of young guys who are relying on their gonna get better they don't have another offseason of getting more physically mature they're gonna understand what we do a little bit more things that they have to talk about they can become second nature so yes there's a lot to build on but I love the competitive nature though that's something you gotta have through our own party Wilkinson onside kick and he got the hop he wanted everybody goes out of bounds what a little bit too high over the intended target flags down I'm wondering is that feed legal touch and was that it is a little early there I'm not sure Liam Anderson was over there free kick out of bounds untouched by the receiving team kicking T penalty is five yards from where they kick went out of bounds first down man skip skip and big hop right dear that's exactly the way you want it now boy and the ve he knows we're close well we had a chance he's gonna play by that way over there it was and that's kind of been what we've seen today almost close sort of kind of there had a couple opportunities for turnovers we got your hands on the ball couldn't bring it in and we remember the big interceptions early on and really put them behind the ball the eight ball so it's just some missed cues here and there but otherwise the special teams have kept the minute we saw those Monmouth numbers right on par for the course transid off their average this is a type of Monmouth effort you see week in and week out look at that I mean those numbers there boy you can win with that now you look at a lot of games if you're doing that every single look at the average per play seven yards per play that's humming on all cylinders offensively and 740 point games this year for the Monmouth offense they have been absolutely fantastic just as we thought new quarterback new tail back in the ball game Eddie Scott is in at QB a 6-4 sophomore from wall new jersey getting some reps here it's got to keep it Scott off the carry inside the 30 inside the 20 flag is flown so they're gonna back him up it appears and he's got his first action at QB coming in somebody's got telling Scott he's gotta stay inbounds you don't want to run out of bounds in a situation like that just take a seat right at the sidelines we keep that clock rolling but either way like you said the penalty would have stopped the clock been negated the game they back him up here is that goes on a Santi Carney the wide receiver the thing about Monmouth you also have to like coming into this game only three turnovers in their previous seven games they take care of the football and they turned over Holy Cross three times three interceptions in this one and you run the football well when you stop the run and don't turn it over I don't care who you plan on K who you are you're gonna have a chance to win every ballgame and that's been the formula for this team all year it's gotta get out the keeper to the 41 yard line gets a couple of yards five yards back on that carry as we're under two minutes to go down can't talk enough about Pete Guerrero the FCS leading rusher puts a huge number on the board again today 31 carries 220 and three scores I mean when you come in average in a hundred and thirty nine yards rushing and that's good enough to lead the country and then you throw up to 20 your first postseason game that's a primetime performer that's a guy who knows how to step up when the moments biggest and they want to need something similar to that next week to have a chance to pull off the huge upset you think Jam you is gonna take a long look at 25 and film study session it may be stupid if it didn't I guarantee you every defensive coordinator that plays this team stays up at night trying to figure out how the long handle let because it starts there even though they got you know a payton candidate at quarterback it starts with the running game and so you got to get that under control and then stop mister bahaar so I love teams that have sort of like the triplets going on cuz they've got some really good players at the wide receiver position I'm learning more being one of them Green being another but there was two in the backfield boy that they're as good as anybody in America you know Moffat did not have developers before this one out with a lower body injury but maybe he'll be healthy and in time for the game against GM you they're gonna need all hands on deck trust me they need everybody healthy and that's gonna be the big concern in the talk all week can Kenzie bahar be anything close to 100 percent next week and a landmark win for Kevin Callahan in this Monmouth program their first FCS playoff victory and they'll get a date with James Madison a convincing victory here they had a good first half that set the tone up 26-7 and he has to be so proud of what his staff has done and these kids they've been good all year long and he should take 24 hours enjoy it because this is a big deal it is a big moment for a guy who took a program and birthed it really and nourished it from its infancy they started with this guy he's built you tell my guys who built a program we use that term a lot he has literally built this from the ground up and so what a tremendous moment for him personally to his family to come and win a postseason game now here's your prize go play JM you so enjoyed coach for about 24 hours maybe even less knowing him he probably enjoyed for about three hours and he's going to turn on that filming to him you and say okay what we gonna do about this yeah he Robinson coach of the year finalists is gonna give us 11th whip of his team bill 11 and 2 as Alexander gets the carry here up to the 48 yard line and Monmouth gets it done they move to 17 at one all time at Kessler Stadium now they'll go on the road to James Madison FCS second round playoff play next weekend we've got a tried-and-true formula for winning football games and it travels on the road run the ball stop the run don't turn it over be opportunistic on defense and then rely on your playmakers we saw one team sort of not give it to their guy until it was too late that won't happen from mama they're gonna hand the ball off to 25 they're gonna set number 11 up to make big-time throws if you beat them it's because you held their stars in check Kenji Behar after a slow start finishes with 249 yards and a touchdown how about Peter arrow maybe the Paton winner 220 yard career the best FCS player I've seen all year everything I heard about him and so on tape is true they better ride up next week they want any chance I'm looking forward to that matchup next week next to Toyota Jackson and our entire ESPN crew FCS playoff first-round play at bodhnath the winner 44 27 over Holy Cross ESPN's coverage of the FCS championship continues next weekend with a second round on ESPN 3 so long from the Garden State [Music]
