round one of the fcs playoffs from springfield missouri it's the ohio valley champs ut martin and missouri state the number 10 team in the country and they brought out the good stuff on the grill today for the first home football game in a playoff setting since 1990 for missouri state and here's a look at the bracket the fcs has a wonderful setup 24 teams get in all racing to frisco texas for the champion to be crowned in a couple of weeks and the winner of this one goes to bozeman montana next week and gets the bobcats of montana state so glad you're with us from plaster stadium with the super bowl champ barrett brooks connor running on hand looking at that bracket the fcs has this thing figured out it's a wonderful time of year it's a wonderful setup it all starts today can't wait no question you know when you look at this unlike baseball and basketball it's win or go home it's not a series so a lot of seniors in those locker rooms right there want to keep playing they want to go to the next game and you see the enthusiasm those guys out there playing also well if ut martin's going to do just that it might ride on the running backs today they've got two really talented guys and peyton logan and zach wallace no question you know peyton logan he got a speed play-making guy he can bust it at any time give you a long run but then if you want to get that tough yardage that going down the field getting the crucial first downs on third and one you go to zach wallace that's why he has 14 touchdowns he's a beast in the in the red zone what's about quarterback from missouri state a future nfl player jason shelly well you know you look at shelly he's the guy that's very versatile dual threat quarterback he can do it with his arm he can do it with his legs he's very versatile in that capacity what he does he gets the ball out there and he keeps the stick moving he can make sure that he goes out there and really be an impact player in this game by getting those crucial first downs getting the ball down the field and getting it out to his weapons well barrett him and missouri state have taken their first drive and scored in six consecutive games so missouri state wants the ball first it'll be shelley in the offense out there to begin the playoffs that's what you want you know shell is a big time player big-time football going on right now playoff football all right so here we go ut martin trying to get their first playoff win in school history in springfield playoff football is underway for the first time since 1990 with a touch back and it will be jason shelley and this great missouri state offense onto the field first just got to look at some of the numbers and some of the action for shelley but it's about more than just him he's got two terrific wide receivers led by tyrone scott no question big playability can push the ball down the field and i'll tell you what everybody talks about the fact that shelley can run around and make plays with his feet well he also has done it with his arms and he got he can get into some big play wide receivers out there and guys like lane also and keyvon letulis starting in the backfield motioning out for jason shelly on the opening snap of the first round of the playoffs and a tip ball falls incomplete so that three down front for ut martin get some getting some pressure on the opening snap and this will be a big big game for those guys up front they got to be very versatile ut martin they like to slant their guys and when they slant they slam and then they don't get to the quarterback you saw what they did right there get the big arms up try to knock the ball down there's austin pickett who missouri state has been scheming for all week the best player on defense for ut martin that had the deflection and a penalty moving missouri state back full start that's on the center ryan's suli offu he didn't snap it so everybody else is offsides hey just follow my snapchat i guess but you know this this unusual offensive line they flip off their guys strong and weak and i haven't seen that in a long time strong side weak side so you'll see sean fitzgerald and ian fitzgerald go right to left a lot so backed up after the penalty and it's tobias little motioning out of the backfield for missouri state more heat on shelly and he goes down great defense they're slamming that defensive line bringing pressure off the outside but you know if you look up front they get a lot of pressure up front and they do a twist in the inside and if you look at it they got guys flying around everywhere and it's hard for an officer line especially an offensive line that flip-flops like that to really get a beat on where they're coming from for pressure david dubose made the plane what a time for your first sack for the all low vc player they're in a prevent formation right now we call that sticks defense everybody's buying first down sticks trying to stop the ball this is what ut martin does a ton in their third down coverage playing coverage with just three up front and a conservative play call on third and forever and tobias little well short of the sticks and ut martin getting out three and out on the opening drive there is some physicality out there physical play if you look little almost lost the ball right there they were recovered by an offensive lineman but hey this ut martin team came to play they're playing physical and hey let's see if um that mission um missouri state really matches their physicality up front they're gonna have to because those guys can move well up front so first time in a month and a half that missouri state has not put points up on the board on their opening drive so shea baker gets it out to the 45-yard line and here comes dresser win and ut martin he's filling in today for keon howard out with a foot injury the ovc offensive player of the year is a no-go so it's win that gets the start oh man you know that's that's that's really hard for this offense i mean he's so versatile you know how we're so versatile and what he brought to the table he can go out there and convert first downs with his feet he does a lot to help that offense dresser has to step up and next man up has to go out there and make it happen see those numbers last week in the loss against southeast missouri state wynn played about a half plus had the final drive of the first half and played the entire second half they let him air it out on the first play of the game and nearly had his man downfield it's broken up incomplete missouri state goes out and they play man-to-man their first snap out i guess they trust their cornerbacks and linebackers to cover some really really good athletes on the outside especially the guy tight end and rodney williams i don't see him manning him up too much but they did a good job in guarding that play that was la andre joe in coverage of zoe roberts one of the big play guys for ut martin at wideout heat coming on win on second down and he flips the screen out to odom who's back today marquel odom with his first touch in a while and he's dragged down by kyrie mcdonald from safety great play by the defense they bring a boundary blitz what i mean by that to the short side of the field they bring the cornerback off the outside put a lot of pressure on dresser and able to get him to throw the ball on the outside screen and make the play and rally around it for a minimal game of best figured you would see some pressure from missouri state today with injuries up front for ut martin left guard spot right tackle spot have been banged up throughout the year for the skyhawks here comes some more heat in the face of wind and he gets it out complete near the sticks there's odom again and he's about a yard and a half shy so interesting decision coming up here early in the game for jason simpson as wind got away from ellis you know you look at this that pass rush he beats the officer tackle inside and that's a cardinal sin and it's actually holding he's holding him right there lots of cardinals sent by you know a pass rusher offensive lineman letting somebody beat him from the inside offense is back out and back out to odom on the screen and he bubbles his way to the 40 for a first down and a flag comes out after that tackle so maybe tack on a couple of more after mcdonald got to odom after he was a couple of steps out of bounds a little ruckus over there on the sideline let's see what happened really good play card dead ball personal foul defense number six 15 yard penalty automatic first that's one thing you can't do is make penalties especially when you're talking about a win or go home type of game and this playoff system you can't afford to hurt your team with those type of penalties mcdonald's been active on this opening drive defensively from missouri state and the the good stick earlier on the drive but the penalty has ut martin on the edge of the red zone and this is how wynn and this ut martin offense scored when he was on the field for the first time last week penalties helped him out leading to a rushing touchdown zach wallace who you talked about a little bit off the top he's wrapped up by tyler wilts from linebacker love way to play this he before front they bring the line back it's not as a pass blitz but this is a run blitz try to occupy that center plug up the inside to run a cross dog with the linebacker he's able to go in and make the play on that that's just a great play called by the defense and the guy like we'll just go there making a play the leader in tacklers from missouri state also gets a ton of tackles behind the line of scrimmage 12 and a half and to lead missouri state and that stat too those impact tackles three down look here from missouri state on second down and long and back to the ground with wallace with the flag down and it's wrapped up again and wilts is in on the play again there you go behind the line it's wilts great penetration on that play penetration kills all run plays makes that runner back bow around running backs always want to get their shoulders going [Applause] we got the illegal formation in with wilts making the play behind the line missouri state declines it there's jason simpson he's the ovc coach of the year for the second time in his career ton of close calls ton of second place finishes for ut martin but they win their first ovc title since 2006 and are back in the playoffs big weekend for the simpsons too simpson's son ty was playing the state semifinals in tennessee last night picked up a big win on the state championship next week and this play blown dead too the play clock at zero offense five yard penalty third down yeah coach sims won't be pleased with this you know they go in they get the big yardage on a play against them that's how you stop drives that was third and what almost 20 when they were right in the red zone a couple plays earlier all right what's your what's your play call on third and 17. there's not a lot of plays you have with this but dresser has to push the ball down the field trust his wide receivers and maybe even look in at tight end rodney williams on his play and the play blown dead again and a timeout for ut martin first charge time out of the game ut martin 30 second timeout yeah you look at williams williams lineup in the slot not at the traditional tight end position he was lined up at the slot so i could see them running a rock combination brothers be a comeback or maybe have them go straight down the numbers and try to pick up the one-on-one against a linebacker as opposed to a safety that's a matchup that you figure they'll look to explore a lot especially with some of the injuries for ut martin they do get odom back but colton dowell was a big time weapon for them that they lost mid-season yes you know impact player he was definitely an impact player you know he's a guy that can be versatile to get the ball down the field he can run those tunnel screens for him he was a big big loss early in the season so here's the the book on ut martin looking for that first playoff win ever we're there in 2006 lost against the missouri valley team in the final minute of the game played jerry kill in southern illinois in 2006 had a great running back don chapman a lot of similarities between that 06 championship team and in this team great running backs are leading ut martin again in this one without howard [Applause] so on third down and 17 they swing it out to logan and missouri state's there to rally and drag him out back at the initial line of scrimmage so fourth down time ut martin converted on a fourth and short earlier on the drive and their kicking game is a question mark with uh with tyler larko five for 12 on the season so not a sure thing no you know and he started out being a very good player an impact type of player now you know they're gonna the you know the kicking game whether it's p-a-t's or whether it's punts so second fourth down to the drive for win in the ut martin offense and nearly another conversion broken up on the crosser to odom it's montre braswell their best cover corner getting missouri state off the field well that's what they're gonna do they're gonna line up their best corner against roberts one-on-one man-to-man and he practically ran the route they just ran a little dig route he ran the route for the receiver and able to make the big play to stop him on fourth down braswell's come up with big play after big play on take this defense from missouri state one of the best in the country best in the missouri valley cup missouri valley football conference and picking off passes this year in large part due to braswell who just made that play so it's shelley missouri state back in the field for the second time after three and out on their opening drive and they keep it on the ground and it's a new look at running back this week seldon manning is back and healthy he was an all-conference player in the spring getting his first game action today that's just a simple zone play you know run behind you know both of the the fitzgerald brothers which is the strong side there's ran in behind him that's what you're gonna look for this team to do get that running game going so they can open up the play action [Music] back to manning who's fresh coming into this game behind letulis in little and nick petrino the offensive coordinator from missouri state said that he's probably their purest running back so we should see a lot of seldom manning today yeah they run a tackle trap just then but ut martin was able to get a lot of penetration on that front side clocked up the hole for no game so second third down for jason shelly they were backed up behind the chains on their first one and ut martin got off the field playing coverage see what type of pressure they bring on this the second one on third down and medium showing a little bit bringing some heat on shelly he throws a good deep ball and scott nearly reels it in looking for his top target but it's broken up by jay woods great play this run a simple nine round just a goal route and this would you want your big guy you big play players to go out there and make a position scott gets out there on the bumper run gets that hand off of them and they're chicken fighting a little bit you know but he's got to make that catch it would have been a great catch but once it hit touches your hands it's got to be a catch that's what separates great players from just good players making those tough catches barrett that's best against best right there tyrone scott having the best receiving year in missouri state history and jay woods the all-conference corner clubbing it out of there so ut martin two drives on defense and they get off the field quickly on both of them skyhawks offense back after this all right so the defense is standing up early in this opening round playoff game you're watching the fcs playoffs opening round with the winner going on to montana state and bozeman next week and that would be a return to his home state for bobby petrino head coach from missouri state yeah you know we were talking about you know the portal for a minute he doesn't believe in it but he took full advantage of it this year with a lot of players he brought in especially at wide receiver with xavier lane and tyrone scott who was just streaking down the field jay woods made a nice play so ut martin with their second drive and that carry for zach wallace is going nowhere heard of bears there with eric johnson a defensive tackle at the bottom of that pile yeah the big fella got up the field he's able to make the stop clog up that hole they try to run a little run fake with it with you know a reverse on it he didn't look at that at all he went up and made the play got penetration and is able to stop him there in the backfield there it is it is a very aggressive four down front for missouri state we've seen that show up couple of tackles for a loss on this opening quarter of the fcs playoffs and there it is again and it's kevin ellis who we had i sewed up a little bit earlier well of course you know you got to put it on the guys to make plays you know look in front these guys are getting so much penetration just getting up the field and stopping the runner back there the twist stun on the other side this is what you want to do you want to create that create uh create confusion with those office alignment upfront especially when they have so many guys that aren't used to being where they're at there have been so many offensive line uh tackles specifically that have been confused by ellis running at him this year their leader in sacks also a beast in the run game too so on third down there's williams down the seam and the great athletic tight end for ut martin as a first down first time they caught him in zone play which allowed him to get free he was in the zone ran up the scene you know watch this he outside release he gets up the scene and the dresser just sees him picks him up right there i mean that's a great great play one on one in the zone gets past the initial and sits down there in the middle of that defense the player that'll likely get a chance at the next level rodney williams peyton logan is lassoed down out of bounds and the penalty flag comes out after the wilts tackle it might be a little horse collaring on that you know he slung them down by the back of his jersey trying to stop that from being away in which you know tackle guys with the injuries guys were having with them with their legs and lower body injuries with their knees and ankles is tough for that offensive line to go against a veteran front four that missouri state has they're gonna throw a lot of looks at them a lot of e.t stunts which is in tackle tes [Applause] all right so six yard gain and ends up being just that yeah i i tend to think a little different you know once he grabs him and he pulls him out of bounds he yanks him down by the back of his shoulders you know that's that's kind of uh what i think of what you would call a horse caller it would have been the second penalty on missouri state on a sideline play like that after the mcdonald penalty on the opening drive and that's caught over the middle what a catch by donnell williams skying for a first down on the wind pass i love it no watch dresser on this he sees the bits coming they were lined up in a four bunch on the left side he stays in takes the hit and is able to deliver the ball down the field for a great test by donald williams great play all that while getting undercut by zack sanders in coverage and that's the thing with donald williams you typically see one great catch per game and it shows up to get ut martin a first down and inching toward the goal line but it's tough sledding right now at the line of scrimmage in the run game another tfl from missouri state coming through with armand wallace on the tackle there yeah they're running a lot of run blitzes to stop this running game of ut martin understanding that's where their impact players are their running backs with peyton logan and zach wallace that time zach wallace was it wasn't able to get past the interior run blitz that they had but hey if he if he's able to get past that first initial wave of divas alignment it's free and clear because they're blitzing everybody and leaving the middle of the field wide open so trying to expose that new look offensive line for ut martin injuries to lamar morgan this season also chris jackson their left guard is hurt shot to the end zone is just out of the reach of williams who just had that great catch andre joe in coverage you know that's a major difference than what they have with with howard you know keon howard is more of a a dual threat type of quarterback dresser is going to drop back and try to place the ball strategically somewhere on the field where they can just run up underneath it he's shown the ability to make just like the past he had two plays before with deep pass down the scene he can do this type of he could run this type of offense he just needs his wide receivers to start making those big time catches against this defense the win might be you know a long time household name in the ovc if entries hadn't interrupted several points of his career 2017 18 19 and the spring dealing with injuries and he zips one in to rodney williams on the sideline and it sets up third down at the 15. we call this minus slit stacks you know on the stacks they're stacking the wide receivers on the outside and they're asking those guys to to really unfold it as the defense and it's really hard you know once you get especially a guy like williams out there has great size where you can just throw it up to him if they can continue to get that open to williams he can be a really really really good player in this game for him set third down men fourth down so field goal unit coming out with larko trying to put points on the board for the first time in this playoff game and the operation is true and the kick is good for larco so point of emphasis heading into this game was cleaning up the kicking game good stuff from larco to begin it so keon howard the ovc offensive player of the year looking on today's dresser win just led the team down for a nine play 58-yard scoring drive capped by the larco 33-yard field goal dress was looking pretty good man he's uh he's showing the ability to make this offense move especially getting a defense like this a good defense like this howard didn't go last week has the foot injury was named the ovc offensive player of the year this week thought he might try to give it a go but on the trip watching dresser win and ut martin go up 3-0 before jason shelly and the missouri state offense are back out after this for drive number three looking for points for the first time [Music] hey espn's coverage of the fcf fcs championship continues next weekend with complete second round coverage on espn plus for more info go to ncaa.com the official online home for all 90 ncaa championships yeah he's fist pumping throughout to bozeman next week for the second round winner of this game gets montana state and we got beautiful postman yeah we got the call back the jacket yeah get up into the hills a little bit gloves so big advantage in total yards so far for ut martin but jason shelly will not be held down for long a threat through the air and on the ground with his first game breaker inside the 20. great play call they run a read option try to hand off with the mesh point with the running back pulling out you know look you know they follow it both guys go outside he cuts inside then he has that speed to get out there and run he's a running back that can the apps have an arm to throw it too shelly's just a big time player makes big time plays and this is what he does best everything looks good hanging on here fake to two letus and then he was off remember this is a guy that threw for 3000 yards in the regular season missouri valley football conference offensive player of the year as a dual threat so we saw the running skills now the passing skills underneath the tyrone scott his favorite receiver and back-to-back first downs after sluggish start on offense picture this i mean this is what i expected at the beginning of the game this type of offense big play type of offense and that's what shelly brings to the table the ability to run and pass you know you have to pick your poison as the defense you're going to stop him with the run or you're going to stop him with the pass and he makes sure you're wrong at both both times would you try so you've got the dual threat with shelly and you've got two big time wide receivers that he can funnel the ball out to with him and xavier lane and it's it's scott checking out lane is top side both are fbs transfers scott from central michigan lane from western kentucky first trip to the red zone today for the bears and seldon manning again playing in his first game today after he was a an all-conference player in the spring gets a couple yeah you know this time he's just gonna run behind those big guys up front sean fitzgerald ian fitzgerald plain old run blocking inside zone [Applause] so tight formation for shelley on second down and gold going under center will play fake and to the end zone for the opening score the playoffs from missouri state to his tight end tia vossue love it man they get in we call it 22 personnel two running backs and two tight ends give the illusion like you'll run it up front and then pass the ball to one of your tight ends underneath on a simple little outro this is a great play design by this missouri state offense i mean it puts you in a bond an awkward bond when you're a defense i mean do you stop the run or you stop the pass either way it goes he's showing the ability to break your back just by throwing the ball and running the ball so two three and outs and then an unstoppable drive from missouri state to take the lead you aren't you know and you look at the formation you gotta love the two runner backs two backs in the backfield and then you look at the two tight ends lined up right there all they do give the run fake and then you run the tight end on a little out route touchdown caught the defense slipping this is why this office is so so much of a threat they can run it and pass it and so many personnel packages and formations [Music] so second touchdown of the year for ron tia vasuya the the snow college trans crew is back in utah last week you were more impressed not by that but by the fact that he's from new zealand right right i mean how do you recruit a guy like that i mean i know he's there but you know how do you make it out here from those type of areas man but you know if you look at utah that's a lot of polynesian culture out there a lot of polynesian culture and now you know there's a big time athlete that you can find out in that area that's why you know teams recruit out there a lot now going back to the snow college thing for tiavosue that's the same school that produced your former teammate brett keisel yes the beard love bread bread is red is a mountain man we call him a mountain man he fishes he hunts he does everything outdoors me and brett go way back won a super bowl with him so tiavasu has got some some work to do on the facial right right right he's got to grow he's got to go to beard man nothing nothing comes with without having a beard when you're from utah when you play it in utah man all right so good drive by jason shelly hooking up for the touchdown after his long run now dresser win has led ut martin down a couple of times went for it on fourth down and then kicked the field goal and scored on the second drive well they're starting to take advantage of what dresser does best and that's passing the football yes you have two weapons you know that you can go to in the run game with peyton logan and zach wallace but you want to make sure that you can keep this defense honest and pull people out of the box by passing the ball on the outside and he has some weapons he can get the ball to with robertson those guys he's got to use them effectively coming out empty on first down checking out the play clock here now they got it rolling so dresser wins starting for keon howard out with the foot today and off of the jet fake going down the seam and he's got rodney williams for the second time big play again up the hatch the second time they've run it they run a jet sweep on the back side and then let this tight end sneak down the seam and he's able to throw a perfect ball to him in the scene they're going to have to go man because every time they've been in zone and they ran this jet sweep they've hit him in the seam so that's that's that's kind of a pattern i see going on with this offense rodney williams a guy that models his game after falcons tight end kyle pitts a couple of big plays early and this pass intended for williams and that's incomplete braswell with the coverage what a flag down he rarely drops passes like that also intellectual player downfield offense number 81 five yard penalty first down it's dj nelson the bet the penalty is declined result of the play is second down it's dj nelson the backup tight end who's getting a little bit more of a look with richie griglione out today can't continue to hurt themselves like this they can move the ball effect effectively but when you have those penalties especially a preaching ability like that you know it was declined this time but you can't make a living off doing that you got to make sure your sound and crossing your teeth are dotting your eyes playing fundamental football [Applause] wallace back into the game but he's roped down in the backfield la andre joe shedded a block at cornerback he read that play immediately he saw exactly what was going on the offensive line cut jump cut to keep the guys out the passing lane so when you watch this play they jump cut the bottom get those guys out the passing lane but you look he just made the play because he saw the play developing once he saw it he got off the field and he almost got blocked in the back so i mean he made a play just by making sure he read the play effectively that's a true freshman barrett first playoff game starter right out of his first college camp from andre joe setting up third down and long for ut martin taking a shot and win just out of the reach of donnell williams that's williams against brazwell that's the matchup that you want you know number one against number one very very physical at the start of the play roswell put me bradsworld put his hands on him tried to reroute him a little bit slowed him down his in his pass play which threw the timing off of the of the route and the receiver me and the quarterback throwing the ball down the field just just enough of a way to keep him from getting off the ball that fast so barrett that's two plays in a row we saw the ability of missouri state's corners showing up in a big way with braswell and joe punta's drops down inside the five and ut martin's on top of it so they'll have it first down and goal great play great play he's got to complete that catch it was brock powers the long snapper that got on top of it and that's what you taught you know if you get down you see the ball drop and you're right in front of the person receiving the ball you tackle him first once you tackle him let somebody else go get the ball if you can stop the returner from catching it and then he makes a mistake if you tackle him first you more you have more of an opportunity to then get the ball and recover it with one of your teammates running down it's it's usually you know when a snap is sailing or something like that you say the long snapper's name but it's powers on top of it after the navy on mitchell fumble that is that's a great play by the snapper going down there and they're never blocked so it's good that he went down and made a play saying his name in a positive way so after powers and shamburger make a play wallace has nowhere to go on first down and goal well it's time for this defense to bow up a little bit those guys up front make a play they had a lot of pressure pressure up the middle eric johnson's a player i'll tell you what you know he's playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage he's getting so much pressure that he's getting up the field and he's establishing a new line of scrimmage in the middle of that defense it's gonna be hard-pressed for this ut martin offense to run up the middle with him sitting there that's his counterpart coming out i'll let you say number 94's name but you know he's making the impact now too now that he's back they just call him ik i heard coach say that coach called him ik so i'ma call him ik uh humibe they call him ik for short but front man look barrett seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage for that front for missouri state in this first quarter this run defense has been impressive for bobby petrino bears lead it by four points at the end of the first so jason simpson looking for his 100th career win today and that would be the first playoff win in ut martin history this is why they're inside the red zone take a look at it's shamburger running down and then the the long snapper brock powers hopping on top of this fumble from mitchell well you look at that man when you have the long snapper getting down there with everybody else with the with the gunners that's just straight hustle man you never hear their name except when they have a bad snap or something like that let's give them a little props man he made the play like i said that the guy pushed the returner out the way and he made the play after that ankle tackled his own guide and made the play first play the second quarter intended for rodney williams and titus wall makes the defensive play i'll tell you what you know that that was a perfectly thrown ball like he should have came down with that catch that cup ball couldn't be any any more of in a better place than where it was great touch on it he's got to come down with the play one on one on the outside that's what you want as a receiver the win in the passing game look great they need something ut mart needs something on the ground negative four rushing yards in the first quarter are you talking about ut martin with negative one running i mean negative four running yards that is unbelievable two running backs near a thousand yards on the season so back to the air and a juggling catch is made for a touchdown for zoe roberts okay now you go with somebody who's definitely gonna catch the rock roberts makes a great play athletic play he wins the one-on-one block he jumps up and gets it he fights for it win has been throwing the ball very very well gets it up there where only the receiver can get it great play on the best player they have out there in coverage omata montre braswell phenomenal job out there pulling it down making a play for the touchdown so a couple of dimes for dresser win one that was broken up by titus wall and then they sneak it past braswell for the score to take the lead after the fifth touchdown of the year for zoe roberts larco has it deflected and it's picked up by missouri state with a chance to return it mata leila uwa gets taken down before he can bring it back for points but there you go ut martin had a couple of field goal issues last week one blocked and eric johnson gets in on this one to deflect it yeah largo in the in the in the kicking game has been really really bad the past couple weeks you know so they got to figure out what's going on what the timing is and everything else but back to the good news ut martin good news for ut martin is that roberts scored the touchdown then the bad news was that they missed the extra point you know 101 on the outside he goes up a strong arms ball i mean that could have been an nfl catch he got two feet down to catch that not just one but right up the middle pressure up the middle blocks it put that big mid up there so those point count though those points count man that that one point might count at the end of this game in which you know it's going to be it seems to be a tight game you got to take advantage of every single opportunity you have to score when you're in the playoffs well dresser win keeps moving ut martin down the field they've been in scoring position each time that they've taken the field and gotten inside bears territory this time their first touchdown roswell to bring it out and has some space across the 20 before he's wrapped up to get jason shelly backed out had the the 50 plus yard run to set up their score as missouri state drove it down after a couple of three and outs yeah you know but ut martin saw that same thing we were just thinking about so i'm sure they went over a lot during this week on kickoff coverage understanding that he's been an impact player in the return game not just on the defensive side of the ball so on first down and 10 shelley off the playfake zips it incomplete looking for the touchdown score to yavasa ue and in complete second in town second and ten well they ran an underfront right there but they didn't have really any pressure um but you know i don't know if the route running was any good at that time it was tough with nobody being open so you know it's hard man when you're not used to being just a past dominant team you know you're a run dominant team well simulated pressure pre-snap before they hand it off and that's going nowhere ratulis is taken down and we've seen it pop up for missouri state in the backfield that time carson evans coming up from safety great play call they run they run a linebacker we call it meb blitz where they pinch the end down run the linebackers on the outside they caught him in a great play it's a stretch play where they're trying to get the ball to the outside they timed it up perfectly able to make the you know tackle in the backfield evan's getting an added chance today with jacquez aikens out suffered a head and neck injury last week so he's a product of some sliding around to the depth chart and here's shelly using the legs again needed the 32 and he got right to that 32 to the 33. and that's exactly what we heard from defensive coordinator pelosi on that play he's able to make some things happen his first read wasn't there caught him in man-to-man when he's a man-to-man when receivers go out they're following their men so everybody's back is turned he's able to go out there and make a play kelly shelley's maybe go out there and make a play just from his speed alone with his feet that's why he's so dangerous as an offensive weapon and jason simpson talked about that the head coach for ut martin what concerns you more the legs of the arm he said well he threw for 3 000 yards so better respect that and they did defend shelly they're looking for scott it was evans in coverage again had him open he's got to deliver the ball overthrew him a little bit on the route maybe he'll let him to the inside a little more instead of too far out could have made the play happen so a couple of deep looks down the field for scott who just needs two receptions heading into this game to have the the single season record at missouri state hardy has broken the yardage record and could break the touchdown record today too currently in a tie atop missouri state history back to the ground after the shot to scott and little is bottled up after a short game austin pickett at that nose tackle always involved in that three-man front yeah he's an understands the size guy too but he used to spin his speed and strength to get up the field to make plays they're running like an under front where they have a three technique and a nine technique on the opposite side and what they're doing is they're slanting to it and which is putting that off the line in an awkward position they're getting that penetration which is stopping the run see he knocked his chain off too [Laughter] hit him so hard he knocked the chain off so third down and long for shelley clean pocket and he checks it down to letulis he's got nowhere to go rob hicks makes the play great play by this defense they stepped up boat up and it was a simple little checkdown library comes up to make the play this all started up front as we talk about austin pickett getting that penetration really making shelley kind of uneasy in that pocket so chilly got the first down with his legs and then austin pickett and ut martin stand up again and a long field coming for dresser win in the ut martin offense leading by two [Music] bobby petrino in season two as the head coach uh missouri state of course several fbs stops and he was the missouri valley football conference coach of the year in the spring led them to a co-championship and a home football playoff game for the first time since 1990 so many parallels to 30 years ago with bobby petrino's team this year yeah absolutely you know and we're talking about a coach that you know a lot of respect for him you know i mean it was sun being on staff too he still let some guys go out there and coach anyways he's got son-in-laws on the staff helping run the defense his son nick petrino is the the former ut martin offensive coordinator 2019 he was on the other side of this yeah they talked about it you know there's a couple similarities they say that's a totally different offense they're running over there you know it's not really the same but they do see conceptually little bitty things that carry over bobby petrino said he still has a skyhawks hat at his lake house from watching his son call the plays that's a little bit under thrown from dresser win to donnell williams trying to go to his back shoulder there well maybe then you know i mean i have guys in the truck that telling me i have to have be more sensitive to these wide receivers i understand right there it was a comeback and it threw under through it simply because he didn't want to lead the receiver into the coverage he had to come back but you know that was that wasn't the catchable ball but i understand you know at this point i got to give them and be a little more sympathetic to these wide receivers but these guys have been great thus far and i tell you what if they go forward man you can definitely see that these guys have a passing game that they're establishing with this uh with this quarterback and win it's been fun to watch the guys on the outside go against the andre joe and montre braswell so far wynn escaping ellis the pressure at defensive end and that pass incomplete incomplete but a flag is out yeah going to the big tight end on that yeah rodney williams had his his legs tangled up and then the flag came out running man-to-man out there and the big tight end was able to muscle through the initial contact but then you know was tripped when they went to come back for the ball and jalen stewart was out there in coverage assume the officials are talking about whether or not this ball was catchable yeah and then i mean look at it rodney williams is six foot four 235 pounds and you know once he figures he wants to go somewhere you know it's gonna be hard there is no foul on the play the ball is uncatchable [Applause] so ruled in catchable for rodney williams trying to fight back in coverage with stewart a little acting in that too but you know it was it was thrown way behind him he couldn't make it back to the ball even if he tried even if he wasn't any contact on that play he under threw him a little too too much on that play that was a couple yards out of bounds and over to the sideline too so navion mitchell back to return after the muff punt earlier set up ut martin on the scoring drive and a very short punt for larco doesn't even make it to midfield yeah we discussed that in special teams all right so a very very short field for missouri state trying to take the lead after this second quarter [Music] welcome back to springfield missouri at plaster stadium you are watching the fcs opening round the first round with all roads in this one leading to bozeman montana montana state waiting next week at round two connor onion with barrett brooks and it's missouri state with a very short field after a 24-yard punt from tyler larco and ut martin so jason shelley back onto the field with seldom manning the tailback moving pocket and o'shea baker gets home to sack him baker the one that's been moving around all over the place with injuries playing another new position today absolutely they put them at the rover position this time that rover position plays along the line of scrimmage a little more than a traditional safety and what do they do they blitz them off the wide side they broke protocol they usually blitz off off the short side but they busted off the wide side this time and he was going up to make a play on a boot protection by shelley so 11 games on film at this point will break the tendency there for baker to get the sack and shelly looking for scott and that's timed up well according to the referees scott looking for the flag and it's baker back in coverage this time great play i mean it was a great time play he was able to break on the ball right when it gets there was a good play so it was timed up well according to you [Laughter] and the refs well they're looking to scott to make a big big play on that and then you know the ball came out a little wobbly need a little more heat on that ball to get to him so third down and 15. ut martin showed coverage initially and they bring just two on third down so shelly checks it off underneath and nowhere to go for seldon manning shy of the 40 the initial line of scrimmage they play sticks coverage everybody line up with the sticks and just tackle whatever happens in front of them you know just corral around the ball as the ball is being caught underneath good defense by this ut martin team so a bit of no man's land here at the 40. fourth down and 10 shelley staying out there saw ut martin go for a couple of fourth downs early and now it's the bears staying out there with the empty look for shelley on fourth down and 10. the pressure comes and shelley completes it over the middle and they've got a first down tomorrow he brought some heat on the slant plate great play it's cairo payne streaking over the middle great protection by the officer line gives him enough time to get the ball out of his hands streets put some heat on the ball able to convert the first down i mean we have to understand this is win or go home this is not the normal tournament that you have in basketball or baseball you know you know best of four best of five this is a this is a game in which you either win this game or you go home it might be some seniors last game they're playing in their college careers nice moment for payne too just his fourth catch of the year and what a snag that was scott ties the single season record on that catch in missouri state history unbelievable catch two wait what a way to break the record on that catch extends all the way out great route on the outside brings it in for the catch i think you can respect receivers hands in the shade now you got to yeah that's just a great play just a great great play by scott so that ties him with michael sparks for the missouri state record and receptions in a single season and after that catch for scott back to the ground with letulis picking up a couple so he's already got the yardage record now in scoring range he can stand alone to the top of the touchdown record the missouri state single season history by the end of the day too no question he'll break that he's just too good of a player to block to to guard one-on-one and they're doing a lot of that a lot of manned type of defenses which puts him in great position he's one-on-one against you know these quarterbacks nick petrino the offensive coordinator said that missouri state is very excited about some of the coverages that they'll get today against ut martin man coverage included especially the third down especially on third down this is second down and that is incomplete vincent guyan coverage on xavier lane who's had a quiet start to this game so tyrone scott transferred from central michigan he had a great year in 2019 leading the chippewas to the mac championship game less of a factor in the 2020 season transfers here a little slow to pick up the offense but once he got it week two you week three took off already over a thousand yards [Music] so this is the spot you're just talking about barrett third down where missouri state might be targeting scott looking for that record-breaking score shelley looked his way then the other way to lane and contested catch right at the sticks what a play from the western kentucky transfer well you know looking at that it's almost like you know he's getting held on that play so this is the other side scott this is where shelley looked initially yeah i mean that's where his primary target is but then you turn back around on the other side and xavier lane makes a great catch comes out of the break he wasn't the primer on that play that's why he's kind of shocked he went to him he's under further review in relation to line the game [Applause] all right so told you he was right at the marker needed the four yard line marked it right about the the five maybe the four and a half so it is fourth down on the field well you know connor if you look at it you know on the opposite side the ball was supposed to go to scott and that's why you know you look at lane to work throughout that he ran wasn't really a lot of effort in it but then whole low and behold he gets the ball down shelly throws the ball to him so you got to be ready at every opportunity you know when when you're out there as a receiver you can't allow yourself to take a play off it looked like he kind of took this play off knowing that he was not the primary but then he turned into the primary he's got to be ready to catch he caught it though but where did you know where did he stop momentum at this is going to be a crucial crucial key and if you look at it i'd probably go for it you check out the the feet entering your picture of the linesman coming in there with that initial spot yes from from where he was taking his paces that would have been a first down but then they backed it up a little bit yeah you know on the comeback you know when he established that he had the ball in his hands and his initial movement had been stopped by the defender that's why i couldn't be a i couldn't be an official man there's too many you know too many instances like that where you know you have to be responsible for these guys when i go home [Applause] [Music] so they stay with it fourth down either way the offense would have been on the field for missouri state yeah they're gonna go for this you have to go for this this is where you do wonder though with the missed p-80 if missouri state had a thought of taking the points and going ahead but with this down a distance and this offense no hesitation no so another tight formation shelly of the offense scored out of a similar look earlier and that should be good enough with little up the middle he did finish forward and he does have the first down watch the penetration of the defensive line and the linebacker it was almost a great play right the middle linebacker gets up to play reason perfectly he's got to finish the deal he's got to bring his arms you can't just think that you're going to tackle a guy like that you know little is too good of a player to do that you got to wrap him up chris hunter came in and clipped the legs but little turns it out for the first down and back to little he's untouched for the go-ahead score for the bears simple inside zone left on that play great job by the offensive line you with your cause of office alignment take your guy and score with your guy and they'll just run right behind you pull a big tackle outside kicks out he just runs right in behind him touchdown of the season on the ground for little so the more physical of the the two primary backs gets a much bigger load especially once they get down inside the ten and the five yeah he's a red zone back that's we call those guys red zone backs once you over 215 220 six foot you become one of those red zone type of backs man p-a-t is true and it's a five-point lead from missouri state so tobias little who initially signed with bobby petrino at louisville scores a touchdown for bobby petrino at missouri state to put him ahead so missouri state goes for it on a fourth and short then a couple of plays later tobias little punches it in to put missouri state up 14-9 mid-second quarter you got to look at it man this is this is like a you know a great play just how you write it up you pull the you know the guard he kicks the kick out and then watch a good old fullback good old fullback you don't see many of them you know but he goes and and kicks down the linebacker that's great football to me man [Music] old school football got a chance to see it again after this fair catch for peyton logan one more time break it down for us no you look at it man this is nothing but stretch play you watch the guard he's going to pull he's going to kick out the defensive end but watch the fullback on this play good old fullback play you don't see many of them these days especially all these stretch offenses but yeah the officer lineman he pulls out kicks out and watch that full black bow hits it and he caves him down he actually blocks three guys on that because they have to run the hump to try to get around and by that time little is already in the end zone that's good old-fashioned football slobber knocking football that's what i love to see especially as an officer lineman slobber knocking football with carson budmeyer in the game he's in there in the red area a lot from missouri state today a little trickery with odom coming around the edge and that had no chance in the backfield titus wall there to clip the ankles well you know they tried they already tried to set this up they ran it twice in a row where they you know ran a jet sweep on the outside and then they had hit the tight end and the seam rod well this time they tried to just make sure they handed off on the jet sweep going around on the reverse and then they make a play on it so look for this tight end again to go out there and make a play check out those numbers barrett still in the negatives in the red right now for the skyhawks but they've still been able to move the ball and nothing doing there again send it out to peyton logan and tyler wilts he runs down screens he runs down outside runs that's why he's the leading tackler there's no question you know we're talking about a guy who's you know all missouri valley that's why he goes out he makes the big plays you know he's sitting there waiting on the running back to come because he's done so much research and so much film work he understands tendencies and that's right play right there they ran the mbb blitz he came around stayed in this gap was able to make the play that's straight film study [Music] so before the third down missouri state running all over the sidelines with their staff looking for the timeout and the bears take the time out before the third down at 11 trying to get shelley in the offense back out there so missouri state hosting this playoff game for the first time at home since 1990 they were on the road last year at north dakota actually played an in-conference team in the missouri valley football conference tough loss they lost by several scores but the motivation to come back and practice hard this week was very apparent according to bobby petrino you know it could be a gift and a curse you know you lose a game like that it kind of refocuses everybody you know you might go into winning the game and feel as though you already have things wrapped up but when you lose going into the playoffs you understand you want to get that taste out of your mouth so you go in with a little added incentive especially in practice to go out there and practice a little bit harder because you understand now that you have to make a play because it's win or go home barrett the surprise was not that missouri state got in they were a lock to get in the surprise was deceding yes that they didn't have a buy they thought they were worthy of a top eight seed yes you know by all rights i think if they'd have won it might have been a different uh seating for finished second place in the fcs's best conference that got six teams in missouri valley on third down win was flushed a little bit and then fired it incomplete yeah they run a blitz right there and making wind move off his move off his point where he wanted to throw the ball the route combination that he wanted to get to were on the opposite side on the right side but he was flushed to the left you know it's hard for a quarterback to throw across his body like that which sometimes it takes a little bit off the ball when he throws it jalen stewart's having a good first half at safety he's having a great first half his in coverage and coming up and making plays on the run so after the little touchdown quick work on defense from missouri state and it's larco looking for a little redemption after the short kick and he gets off a good one here [Applause] and it backs up mitchell to the 30 and looking for the edge and then got out to the 40. great great one-on-one tackle on that play but he had to go out and make sure that he hit it so we're talking about missouri state they they finished in a tie they were co-champions of the missouri valley football conference in the spring second this year with the 8-3 record a record six bids for the valley and you know a couple of those teams were last in but also you got north dakota state at the top with the seed they're the number two seed absolutely you know and once you get in this conference game you know they start picking off each other but still you know there's a lot of guys you know that that are in this missouri valley conference you know that deserve to be here you know the eight wins for missouri state looking for number nine going on to montana state next weekend and a fake to little who scored the touchdown in the last drive and that's air mailed by shelley right pressure come up the middle they're slamming the defensive end and bringing a linebacker on the outside slant bring that linebacker coming around and he's able to go and make a play you know shelly took the hit he just couldn't deliver a catchable ball and decarius stevens coming up the middle from inside linebacker one of the most durable players in the ovc one of four on this defense to start every single game for the skyhawks [Applause] empty again for jason shelly on second down and out to scott there's the record-breaking catch he stands alone with the first down top missouri state history for receptions in a season and has a perfect size and speed to be a major factor on this team and i tell you what jason shelley is definitely taking advantage of his skill set they run a lot of man-to-man you know it was tough to cover a guy like that with signs of speed like that so he was tied with michael sparks after a second catch in the last drive now he's all alone with the 63rd catch tyrone scott and still looking for that record-breaking touchdown in this game shelley back to the air and onto the grounds and the ball is out out at the 40 and ut martin had a couple of guys in the area stripping shelly and they have their second takeaway it's stevens on top of it [Applause] well you know at this point you know they took away his first read they sent a blitz they jump over the cut blocks and they're able to get up on him but then one of those big paul from one of those defensive linemen gets in there and hits shelly knocks the ball out ut martin recovers so they recovered the the muffed punt and stevens is on top of the second one a guy that made the play earlier with the pressure getting in the face of shelly now he's got the takeaway those guys up front are playing very very well for ut martin even though they're smaller in size they're moving around a lot man lesser in numbers too with the three down so missouri state's defense has had a good second quarter just eight yards of offense since this second quarter has begun and peyton logan's got nothing a little bit this this missouri state defense they're sitting back in zone and allowing everything to develop in front of them and then they're able to come up and rally for the play the defensive line is creating enough pressure without setting the blitz up front so when you have the autonomy to do that when you don't have to send the blitz it gives you the freedom to drop people back in coverage and that's exactly what this this missouri state defense is doing that's led to la andre joe making plays throughout the afternoon like that win rolls the pocket and he's got a man at the sticks this will be close to a first down there's your d-ray lawrence d-ray lawrence very very good receiver he's just little man but he has speed he has quickness runs pretty good routes and he finds that you know and sits down in the zone play to make a big play coach often talks about him saying he's the first one that he has to take out of there because he wants to take every single rep and he had his biggest moment of his early career at tennessee tech a 62-yard touchdown guy that came in d-ray lawrence walk on he had a 30 on his a.c.t that sort of 36 now that's a high score yes that's uh you know that's that's pushing towards some ivy league scorers there absolutely and came to walk on at ut martin and because of injuries has been a big part of the offense the past couple of weeks [Applause] so lawrence's first down got ut martin to midfield with a chance to regain the lead before half time once again nowhere for zach wallace or peyton logan to go against this front no you know looking outside there blitzing the safety from the outside from the far side of the field they blitz across the slant the end and he's able to come in and make a play on that plane that's just great great technique by the defensive end across the dip off the tiger's face which allows that safety to come in and make a play in the backfield for a tackle for loss mcdonald does that a lot too his seventh tackle for a loss from safety on the year also a good cover guide back there too kyrie mcdonald does it all for him he can play in the box but he can also play a covered safety it's like win and ut martin will take their second time out before this third down it feels like a big play coming up here late in the first half doesn't it well they need one they need a big play uh they don't want to go into the the locker room down at this point i mean this is this is only a half a football left two minutes and 31 seconds left in the first and then one of the halves is going to dictate whether some of these seniors play their last football game that's why this is so important for a lot of guys on these sidelines this could be their last football game in uniform as a football player you know and that's that's you know when i had my first game that i did i played my last game i played you know it meant a lot to me you know i it was an injury but you know it's one of those things where wow you know no more football no more getting up no more conditioning you know playing for a team representing this school again and you get to do it in a do or die situation too so absolutely you get the extra week this week with uh with the added game in the postseason so third down to nine i know if if you had your choice you'd be running the ball but an obvious passing situation here what do you like well you know what i'm gonna go to the big tight end rodney williams you know he's shown the ability to get open yeah he's top side in the slot wins found him a couple of times in the seam today and win goes to the opposite side williams is out there perfectly thrown ball williams hauls it in yeah williams goes against the freshman you know 101 against the freshman makes a huge huge play on that you know it's a contested ball you know he throws it up there wind throws it up there understanding that his guy can go out there and play he's the only one that can get it and that's a younger guy out there that's a freshman out there so why not take advantage of it well the has been challenged and won most of those challenges today and this play is blown dead ut martin trying to go quick this might be coming up top for a review yeah but that was a pretty good catch though but you know this is great game plan about ut martin understanding freshman there we got buzz first the previous play is under further review that that is uh that's that's a clipable one yes yes we got buzzed first yeah applicable to many things all right donald williams tight roping the sideline here catch the contestant ball there's one foot in there's a butt in he's got a butt in so once you get a butt in it's a catch man he's got a butt in a cheek equals a foot yeah yeah but the you just need the one down and williams clearly had that down dragging it on that first part of the shot absolutely you know you got you know six foot three going up against six foot throw it up there you got the youth of a freshman out there playing you know take advantage of that and that's exactly what they did you got a graduate guy going against a freshman so you know use that use that seniority on this play throw it up allow your big receiver to go make a play and that's exactly what donnell williams did he made a play what's twice now williams remember the opening drive of the game went up and made a play over zack sanders does it for a second time and that's when you know i don't know if you necessarily have that from from you know kion howard you know you have a guy here who's pretty confident in his arm and his ability to play to review the ruling on the field is confirmed first down in 10 ut martin so confirmed donnell williams with his second great grab and it was apparent you know watching ut martin throughout this week getting ready that they love throwing him fades when he's healthy absolutely size speed he's a competitor out there he goes up and gets those 50 50 balls so he's singled up with ut martin into the red zone after a sleepy second quarter to this point on offense you know we've got another stoppage before the first and temp please reset the game clock to 217-217 all right so an added five ut martin of course wants to get the points go ahead also got to think about missouri state two time outs player of the year in the missouri valley on the other sideline yeah you don't want to score too quick exactly across the field from the press box is still alive two minutes 17 seconds both clocks will start am i ready yeah you look at it you know they get the ball coming out of half also so this would be big if they can keep this drive going a little bit give missouri state a little less time on the clock and have the ball coming out it could set up perfectly for this uh youtuber team going into halftime all the success today through the air so far 158 for dresser win yardage wise and negative one on the ground wide split pass and run but they do stick it in there their first successful run leads to the go ahead score for ut martin great peyton logan i can't wait to look at this plague you know when you look at it the offensive line they just blow him off the ball inside zone blow him off the ball off the line finally made it a point to go out there and make a play and that's exactly what they did watch it inside zone play you block it this is just how you block it get him going one direction then cut off those blocks he's untouched going into the end zone and that's your speed guy how about that too peyton logan goes over a thousand yards on that carry on the season he's had good seasons before this is his best and a touchdown in a playoff game to take a lead hands it off inside zone cuts off the block of the right tackle goes in untouched for the touchdown i mean logan's a guy that's you know a couple time all ovc player he's been a freshman all-american the the biggest difference according to the coaching staff for ut martin is one he finishes runs better the other one that is apparent when you watch ut martin is the offensive line is a lot better than earlier in his career even when injured yes you know and we talked about you know how he's able to go out there and when the officer line finishes blocks and that was a problem that you know they were talking about at ut martin the coaches talked about the offensive line thinking they just blocked a guy but you have to finish a guy go to the whistle and i play they went to the whistle which allowed him to go in and score on the run play so you figured that you know devonte howard and his running backs group with logan with wallace a little bit of jordan castleberry would have to have a big day to win this game without keon howard their quarterback and the ball is out and this could be a third takeaway for ut martin skyhawks say they have it and larko's back of that pile cheering his guys on and his guys did get back on top of it well you know i actually thought that was a mistake for him to push punt it like that you know understanding there's a lot of clock um a lot of time left on the clock but they push product they get it to the the big guy who filled it ended up getting the turnover let's see ali sulei offu the big man that you're talking about you know they're not necessarily a a kickoff returning type of type of player you would necessarily say you know so you know he wasn't able to complete the catch ut martin takes advantage of it check out larko too he started playing the arrogance [Laughter] when it was chris hunter that made the play for ut martin so we're talking about missouri state maybe with a quick strike back with their good two-minute offense but it's win in ut martin right back onto the field with the lead trying to add to it before halftime and two donnell williams and he drags joe with them for another first album that's the key matchup right there that's exactly what they're trying to take advantage of the experience of a of a young quarterback and le andre joe you know going against donnell williams a graduate a lot more football being played at the wide receiving position right there than at the cornerback position they stretched joe out on that last drive with the fade now they they run underneath him [Applause] so one time out for ut martin clock rolling approaching the red zone win back to the air looking for his seam target williams and he's interfered with got the linebacker wilts in coverage you know that's a play design you know what wynn just took advantage of that he under through it something because he see past interference defense number four 15-yard penalty automatic first down he saw the defender's back was turned to him so he kind of under threw it knowing that he had eye contact with williams on that so when williams tried to go back and get the ball he couldn't he wasn't able to because the defender did not turn around to try to defense the ball great call and so wilts gets called for the pi so now first and goal coming up for ut martin you think he catches that ball if williams gets back inside if there's no interference that wasn't even designed you know wynn just knew he had a defender with his back turn and took full advantage of it all over the top looking for williams incomplete now on that play you know i'm telling wind really wants that ball back because he had him wide open wall was wide open he wasn't able to defend on that and he couldn't make it happen win tap got inside titus wall there and second down from the nine so three first half turnovers from missouri state that was a big play man you know we're going to go back and look at this if they don't score this time that was a huge play because he was wide open on that play win couldn't catch braswell lining up on the wrong side instead had to take the time out of the house here's another look at that last play you said could be crucial heading into halftime here yeah you know i mean this is a great route by williams he's wide open on a play i mean you got to get the ball to your your big play receiver and it's six foot three out there sitting wide open you know sometimes you got to take your time a little bit and deliver a catchable ball i'll tell you this has been a great first half i'd note that throw aside this has been a great first half for dresser win filling in for the player of the year in their league you know they've changed their whole offensive philosophy you know the mere fact that they don't have a rushing yard well they might have a rushing yard now it's totally different from what this offense usually runs but they're taking advantage and i think it kind of caught missouri state's defense off guard they're going to the air in order to move the ball which is a far cry from what they had when they had keon howard and his ability to run the read option or or run past options you know so they probably went out there and practiced for howard and they didn't have they don't have right now a means of stopping dresser his first start since the spring season when he broke his ankle and back to the air after the timeout and that's incomplete so third down coming for dresser win and ut martin trying to add to the lead yeah that was good coverage right there by titus wall he ran the route for the receiver on that play all over elijah smoots [Applause] so back to back incompletions no timeouts for ut martin [Applause] field goal to make it five touchdown could make it a two score game heading into the break williams the man in motion he's been one of the favorite targets and no chance on that swing out to wallace who was out of bounds remember we talked about that potential of a touchdown to williams on that play they have to settle now to go in and get a field goal that would have been huge going into halftime with another touchdown and having the ball when they come back in the second half feels like a big win for missouri state to get that stop absolutely it is to hold him like that in the red zone so remember no sure things in the kicking game for ut martin had a pat blocked earlier and larko is true again no air guitar this time but you know [Laughter] he bounced back after that bad punt he bounces back with two crucial kicks just yeah the pooch kick on the kickoff and now the p-a-t i mean the field goal to go in five up so two timeouts for missouri state they'll get a second chance at it after the the short kick and the turnover how aggressive might you be down one score well you have to be aggressive you know when this is a winner go home situation you got to maximize every opportunity to go out there and score and you know you have a quarterback that can go out there and make some plays and jason shelly so why not go out there and try to score you have big weapons on the outside you got you know xavier lane i mean you have guys that can go out there and play deep it's just if can they go out there and and really protect if they can protect shelly he can make some things happen for but they have to be able to protect him and make sure he's comfortable in the pocket you've also got a a kicker and jose pizano with a big leg just hit some from 50 plus this year so we'll get that answer right now 55 seconds two timeouts down five ahead of halftime and the missouri valley player of the year is back out there we are we we have a great game you know you have two two teams that you know want to go on and you know two quarterbacks you know one quarterback just thrown in there but hold totally changed how they run the offense with ut martin but then you have the old reliable jason shelley who now has to go out there and make a play and drive down you know 55 seconds so we'll see so they do air it out on the first play of this drive and a short completion out to little the running back only six seconds run off after a six yard game you know they've been this ut martin defense they have a lot a lot of confidence in their cornerbacks they're playing man-to-man for the most part and they're winning i've seen jay woods picture there with the big pass break up earlier in this first half shelley quick throw out and that's a dangerous throw and it's picked off a fourth first half turnover for missouri state and it's o'shea baker making the undercut yeah we talked about him early being able to go out there and make plays you can line him up anywhere on that defense whether the safety whether it's linebacker whether it's you know the deep safety he's done a lot they're playing man-to-man on this play and you know he just doesn't back up he sits down understanding the route is able to undercut it i mean it was predictable the entire time he was the deep guy ran up and made a play undercut the play it was supposed to be like a wide receiver screen he read it from the beginning and able to go up and make a play so another short field you figured that ut martin's offense might be done for the half but a fumble on a kickoff for missouri state stay ready and yeah now the interception after settling for the field goal they can make it a two score game again and win wasting no time going back to that fade target williams but this time it's joe making the play yeah he made a play this time but it was actually open it should have been a it should have been a cart ball on this play he under threw it on purpose he's able you know in that chicken fight you know that's what happens great play by the young db able to pull the arm down of williams turn the jersey into a deep v-neck there there's a lot of butterflies right now going on and uh number 22. understanding you know this williams has had some big plays against him so that's been a matchup that's been targeted several times there is help over the top of williams on the second down snap and that's picked off missouri state gets the turnover it's wilts picking it off wow someone a big play that's the linebacker out there playing like he's he's a db great play great great play undercut the route knew exactly what's coming he's out there on the big tight end stays under they're running like a cover three on that so he has the flats he was the flat defender he reads the quarterback eyes and is able to get under make that play great great great play by the linebacker so the first ut martin turnover the half gets the offense back out for wilts who does everything for them leading tackler leading guy getting tackles in the backfield and he gets the hammer after the takeaway they needed this in the worst way so shelly trying to bounce back after his pick and he sails that one to little here's the hammer silver headed hammer with the takeaway for wilts 20 22 seconds left two timeouts you thinking field goal here you're thinking six again they're gonna have to go for six you know and and shelly is not comfortable in their pocket i don't know what's going on the blitz package that um the youtube martin is sending to him is really making him uncomfortable inside the pocket he's moving around too much he's got to settle his feet down and throw a catchable ball as opposed to throwing off his back foot or throwing in awkward positions where she can't get enough heat under the ball to get the receiver no heat for shelley this time on the initial rush and a flag does come in after the incomplete pass to lane back at the feet of shelley did take a hit with three men rushing yeah it was a personal foul rocking the passer defense number 47 15-yard penalty automatic first down that's pickett who had none sportsmanlike conduct penalty last week at semo just a little overzealous on the play he beats the guard but he you know follows through on it that's that's that's a tough call he's just trying to make a play anyway it was almost simultaneous when he threw the ball but you got to learn to slow down on that play and barrett that penalty single-handedly puts missouri state in a field goal range for pozzano right on the edge of the 30 the the long for pizano is 51 this season 51 yards for the place kicker two time out 17 seconds left in the half and can't have that if you're jason shelly he gets dragged down by david dubose great rush i mean they are getting up the middle and they're creating a lot of havoc in front of the quarterback he doesn't feel confident in his ability to step up linebackers are coming everybody's playing around his feet you know this is a this is a shelly this is shelley not being comfortable at the quarterback position you know he's not even able to get to his second or third reads he wants to just run the ball immediately and you know at this point it's going to be hard for them to really do anything right now until he settles down and becomes a pass thrower as opposed to being a runner and by taking that sack could have knocked him out of field goal range well i mean this is 12 seconds left on the clock what do you think i think they'll throw a little out route you know just to get a couple yards you know for for the field goal and stop the clock so i'm thinking two out routes on either side of the ball especially with them being in the middle of the field now with the timeout if you thought that this was your last play i guess you could run the ball too potentially try to get to pizano's range to his target so five standing up there for ut martin but they bring just three to shelly and that pass a little bit short but he did thread it in there to jordan murray maybe one ref said yes other ref said no jordan murray says he's got the catch and that would get him back inside field goal ring yeah that's what they needed able to complete the catch they might want to um take a look at this i don't think so [Laughter] like there's some turn the previous play is under for the review yeah they might be back out of field goal range and it's you know it's only seven seconds left on the clock can they throw a little outro to really stop the clock that'll be tough do you go ahead and try to kick the field goal this is the awkward position of being just outside of the range of your kicker or do you try to take a snap at the end zone if it's too far so ruled as a catch on the field uh i'll tell you the truth connor i don't think it's a catch you can kind of see the ball scoot through his hands hits the back of his leg yeah i'm with you though you know quick quick out i mean it's got to be really fast yes four or five seconds and i don't know if i would take that run and run the risk of that i mean these quarterbacks are playing really tight on the wide receivers understanding you know they are going to try to throw it outside you run the risk of doing that you know it's almost a thing it's almost where you might have to take a peek at the end zone you know if he's out of field goal range for the kicker missouri state would have taken their time out had that been ruled a catch so they still might have to uh right a tight timeout they still had the one so you could go to the middle of the field but it's got to happen fast get down and then take the time out to get in the field goal range if anything i would run a draw play with shelley have him get a couple yards get where you wanted to get on the field and slide you know that way the clock stops when he starts to slide and call timeout while he's sliding there's the o-line talking in ya let's run drop play in the two-minute so i will say from the the back angle that we got was was hard to tell that was the one that looked most like a catch but then you see the front angle and that was yeah you see the front that was the one that looked like the trap hey look at the front angle kind of slides through right there on the ground it's not underneath his forearms he trapped it and brought it up yeah it's still moving as shamburger goes over the top of it too all right so verdict coming maybe changing the clock too a little secret after review the ruling on the field is refers to an incomplete pass it will be third down and 16 at the 37 yard line please put nine seconds on the game plot nine seconds the clock will start on the snap okay that makes it a difference yeah those could be a big two seconds yeah so this works into my draw play a lot better or even a handoff and then get down and call timeout see if you've got bobby petrino telepathy here on the play call so third and 16. missouri state on a roughing the passer penalty did get to the edge of the 30 but then a sack by david dubose knocked him out of field goal range now third and 16 with the one timeout for missouri state and a quick completion out and that gets him back to that spot nearly tyrone scott got popped by schamberger and that puts him right at the edge of field goal range for a kick so you're talking about a 47-yard try here for a guy pizano again the longest 51 so this is well within his range try to get missouri state within two before the half yeah you know you look at you know everything that's happened over the past three or four minutes to only be down if they make this field goal they only be down by two points you know really is almost a victory for missouri state so pizando with the big leg with 50-plus type range from 47 he's made 13 straight kicks and just before the half pizzano has enough true from 47 to make it a two-point game two points everything that's happened to two turnovers big plays down in the red zone against their defense this might be looked at as a win for this missouri state team but it's also a win for this ut martin team because they're able to go into halftime with the lead and getting the ball back going into the second half a couple of chances for the skyhawks to make it a two-score game but five combined turnovers in the first half and it's a tight one in round one of the fcs playoffs from springfield [Applause] back in springfield missouri at the half it's the skyhawks the ovc champs leading by two points over missouri state with the defenses forcing a bunch of turnovers in that first half five of them combined four for the ut martin defense to lead it by two glad you're back with us with one super bowl champ con running on hand barrett brooks one of us the super bowl champ there we go check that out uh well dresser win was impressive in that first half filling in keon howard ovc player of the year can't go and dress her win threw it 28 times that's unbelievable talk about the team that made their hay off running the ball but dressage win he's came out of being a great passer 28 times throwing the ball that's simply crazy but there's going to his strength you know that's what they want to do they get the ball out to their weapons he's done a phenomenal job of making sure that he gets and hits his targets he's had a touch today here's a big play going down to williams on a deep pass play he's hit the tight end also with rodney williams in the scene he's done everything you want from a big time quarterback and here's a little touch ball right here for the score also to williams he's done a great great job you know of playing hard and understanding where the ball needs to go in the offense they totally change who they are as a team on the offensive side of the ball with win being the quarterback that's hard to do with only a week to prepare and they've actually pulled it off in this game you mentioned donald williams rodney williams though roberts has to to love it too with the touchdown catch in that first half as well yes roberts so uh so dresser win 14 of 28 you talk about their identity without howard nothing going on the ground for ut martin and they've been able to to do a decent job against the other quarterback and uh jason shelly as well yeah you know but they're making sure that they're rushing him the right way they're bringing pressure up the middle making him very very uncomfortable inside the pocket that means he's not using the proper footwork he's not pushing the ball down the field because he's not stepping through it's a lot of underthrown balls and because of that this is why this offense has been kind of out of sorts because he's not in the right place in that right frame of mind well you figured with jason shelley at quarterback for missouri state and then keon howard if he could go this week you'd see very like quarterbacks both players of the year but but howard couldn't go and he's been there supporting win in the first half you know he was a dual threat all year he ran the offense howard was a phenomenal player because he ran so well when he needed to that's when he caught defenses turn their back on on man-to-man coverage he would make those big big plays of gaining first downs in third and long third and shorts his ability to be out of the dual threat is what made this offense really really good well i'll tell you what winners came out and established himself as a really good quarterback throwing the ball so they changed the offense up taking it through the air and they'll have it first when we come back we've got second half coverage right around the corner with ut martin up two start of the second half connor onion barrett brooks and missouri state trailing by two but they did have a little bit more balance than we saw on the other side ut martin doing it all through the air balanced on the other side yeah you know i mean and and what you have a quarterback is really dictating what's going on on the offensive side of the ball they can run the ball and pass the ball because you know they have a guy that can go out there and make plays at the quarterback position and jason keller shelly he's able to throw the ball and run the ball dual thread on the other side of the ball they don't have that wind is just going to deliver the ball down the field he's just throwing quarterback he's not necessarily a guy that's going to move outside the pocket he has functional mobility but i'll tell you what shelley has to step it up he has to be more of a weapon in this game if that means running the ball in order to execute the offense he has to do something to really get him going on offensive side of the ball so those bottom two lines were telling from missouri state too with the third down numbers and the turnovers four of them and just one of seven on third down so there was uh there was a lions bears type moment here coming out of the half remember on the thanksgiving game beautiful no we deferred no we wanted lined up on the wrong side of the field had to do the flip-flop right they should just want to kick it i didn't know any better anyway so you know it was a a slight breeze at uh that kick still blowing a little bit as we get deeper into the night wind is at the back of dresser wind up 10 miles per hour here in springfield so the skyhawks open up with logan motioning out of the backfield after dresser win 50 a little under 200 yards through the air in that first half fakes the run and then shoots it over the head of rodney williams on the opening play of half number two oh you know it looked like uh they were out of sports in that play you know you look he's he could have delivered a ball on the tight end as opposed to you know overthrowing it i think william saw coverage also coming up on him so he kind of made a business decision and not stretch out to a ball that was over his head nope same last name not related williams and williams but very similar numbers and here's donnell williams with his first touch of the second half and on the alley screen he's close to the first down you know he's been an impact player for tonight you know they have a nice little chemistry going with him and when you know these guys are are getting the ball down the field throwing up 50 50 balls especially when he has the rookie out on them and him and le andre job matched up for much of that first half so ut martin starting with the ball second half looking for that first playoff win ever their first trip to the fcs playoffs since 2006. missouri state hosting for the first time since 1990 and peyton logan has the two explosive runs today for ut martin out for a first down near midfield yeah we spoke earlier in the game about them being able to when it blitz and they get up the field once they get with that blitz it leaves a hole in the center of that defense and that's exactly what happened right now once they get past that defensive line it's a huge hole because the linebackers are closer up to the line trying to stop the run and one of those linebackers tyler wilts hanging on for dear life back-to-back tackles for wilts he drags down wallace you know trying to change it up a little bit not be so predictable in their offense and they have the ability now to go ahead and run the ball i think they've got missouri state out of that blitz package now that they you know throwing the ball so successfully they want to drop back and use a little coverage as opposed to you know let them go out there make plays oh a huge hit on logan it's mcdonald coming up from safety you know that's that's that same tunnel screen you know they've had success the first play but then he just reads it you know once the receiver steps back the db's are taught to just run up and make the play and that's exactly what they're doing they're not giving the blocker a chance to go out there and block them they're hitting it but what you do off that if they keep doing it playing it like that you run a fake alex um total screen and then throw it over the top fake like you're gonna stop and catch it and then keep running past them you know i think that's the progression of what you do trying to stop him from reading that play you're talking about it a little bit at halftime that without much of a running game for ut martin they might have to to use the screen game and missouri state anticipating that and as a flag flies on third down pass incomplete from win we'll check on the flag in the backfield yeah it's not good for offensive line when you see flags behind the line of scrimmage like that we tend to look around like not me it wasn't me this time nine times out of ten it was me though you two martin seems to think it was not them there are two flags down here that that might be what the the meeting is about sorting out which is which looks like there are two different flags so one was the lesser of two even right well one in the secondary on the far sideline and one in the backfield yeah you hate that as an officer llama you hate what that happens although i've had some holding calls that uh i got thanked by a couple quarterbacks you know rodney pete thanked me for holding mr white you guys call him reggie i call him mr white i had to hold on for dear life keep him from killing my quarterback and you know rodney pete definitely thanked me for not letting him hit him respectful of you right here we go we have a live ball foul and the dead both on the play holding offense 77 10 yard penalty after the play dead ball personal foul defense number six 15-yard penalty automatic first down so for missouri state they would be looking at a third down in long or declining it and getting off the field but the the penalty on mcdonald makes it first down into bears territory yeah you know this is this is winner go home and you just can't make the little mistakes you know as as you go farther and farther the playoffs the more refined your game has to be the less mistakes you have to occur so fresh life on this drive for dresser win and ut martin and there's that stream game again and nothing doing on both of them so roberts dropped it you're reading that immediately missouri state is up there to make the play as soon as the ball is thrown i told you the progression from this is to run a fake speed screen to the outside or total screen to the outside that way you look and give the illusion that you're running that screen but the blocker instead of him going to block he just takes a nine round shoot straight up the field i can almost guarantee he'll be by himself in the end zone if they run that play because they're playing this screenplay so fast and and so quick how long do you wait you go to it here you can go to it here i would [Applause] it's an unbalanced formation and the traditional run for peyton logan he gets dragged down by braswell so that's one of the more positive gains for ut martin today it's been a lot of stuff moving backwards outside of the two big logan runs you know that's the read option you know the officer line blocks it like outside zone and the quarterback and the running back read the back side end if he crashes then he the quarterback keeps the ball if he if he doesn't crash stays outside then he gives it to the runner back to the outside so four conversions on third down today for win and they won't have one here with wilson they're stripping the ball free they will say that win is down wilt's the first one in there that's those big guys up front the interior of that defensive line eric johnson of those guys i mean they just you know this is just pressing off the line they're real establishing a new line of scrimmage they've run a cross dog blitz right there and then they're able to you know get win in a position where he can't go down the field or run that cross dog has been a definite impact on them you know every time they've run it especially in the first half so after the penalty kept the drive alive three plays and a punt after that for ut martin against the bears defense and here comes jason shelly and the bears again after an up and down first half offensively the four turnovers shelley did have some flashes with a long run couple of touchdowns back after this to springfield [Music] espn's coverage of the fcs championship continues next weekend complete second round coverage on espn plus for more info go to ncaa.com the official online home for all 90 ncaa championships first drive on offense for missouri state in the second half and nothing doing there to carry a stevens in on a play again and shelley dropped for a loss i think that was a miscommunication with the officer line and shelly on that play you know because two offensive lineman pulled to the left and then he took it and ran backside with it so i don't know if it's supposed to be a handoff but players supposed to go to the left but it was definitely a miscommunication somewhere so the opening two drives the first half went three and out for shelley looking for a better start to the second half and this is where the offense got going initially shelley with his legs another first down you know that's what dynamic play is his ability to go out there and make something out of nothing you know he gets the rush up the middle free defender he's able to get out of the pocket and you know those are big guys you know they're not going to necessarily be able to keep up with shelly when he's running like that so 21-yard gain for shelly it was a 50-plus yard run that got him going for the opening score on the third drive of the game now fresh set for shelley and off of the play fake ball goes skipping in pressure in his face yeah bringing the blitz off the wide side you know which is like i said a tendency breaker what they usually do is bring the blitz off the short side will they bring it off the wide side with either a safety or a cornerback and is speeding up shelly in his progression on where to go with the ball so showing pressure again for come on shelly he's well protected and with plenty of time to throw couldn't hook up with scott yeah shelley right now like i said he's out of sorts you know if you look at the way he's throwing the ball he's throwing with his arm he's not following through with his leg he's not stepping through he's not bringing his hips through with the pass and that's why the ball is sailing on him as a quarterback you got to get back to playing fundamental football and that's driving your hips through driving your foot through and driving your arm through and that way you have a more measured pass where the ball is supposed to go and barrett is typically accurate at all three levels too yes so back and forth end of the first half with a couple of turnovers couple of scores right before the break has led to three punts two for ut martin one from missouri state coming out of the locker room and for jason shelly most of his good work today has been on the ground 10 of 23 through the air yeah you know we're talking about he has like 70 yards rushing but he only has 90 yards passing you know that has to be a little skewed for him you know from go out he has to make sure he starts to become more fundamental in his passing and then this office will get rolling once he starts getting better this offense will get a lot better we've had some slow starts and games this year they've been dubbed the cardiac bears for some of their fourth quarter and second half comebacks so you know it shouldn't be too alarming for bears fans it is a little bit of a slower start yeah you know even then you know they just had a toss play you know toss play to the right and like i said they're bringing the blitz from the wide side and they ran right into that blitz and able to get penetration and his first play is a loss which again is different than what ut martin typically does usually that pressure comes from the boundary shelly back to the air and dropped it in the bucket for xavier lane looking for a flag but through his hands with jay woods in coverage that's a nice pass right there you know that's what you want from you know shelley he has that ability he has that capability but if you know he needs to look to us holding defense number four 10-yard penalty automatic first down [Applause] so lane was right in the end yeah but you know shelley has the ability to be a big time play maker when he plays fundamentally sound you know he has a strong arm he can deliver the ball pinpoint accuracy but he has to go to the second and third rounds he's just going to the first round if he watches a lot of stops and on the back side of slants on the back side that are open and he's not going to so that could be the next progression for him a guy that bobby petrino says will play in the nfl get a shot at the next level on the ground there with little you see it you you think he's got the goods i mean i see a lot of quarterbacks you know that's like the new wave quarterback that's that's coming into the league now i mean guys that can be more than just a passer you know they're versatile enough to move around in the pocket move the pocket be dual threats run past option you made the new offenses or college offenses that are implemented into the nfl with these quarterbacks now lamar jackson comes to mind guy that bobby petrino also coached at louisville exactly i don't know you know got like jalen hurts oh wide open man it's isaac smith all alone behind the secondary and he stumbles inside the 10. oh man he had a wide open path to the end zone and that's what i'm saying is second to third reads that's exactly what i'm talking about he was the second read on that progression you know he stared down his first read it wasn't open so look he just sits down he just runs out but then he keeps going keep running the play is never over you got to make sure that you know and we talked to talked about this to the coaching staff of missouri state they have to finish plays they don't finish plays they slow down and stop a lot of times especially offensive line and they're blocking they slow down too much and stop keep going until you hit a whistle it was a long way to go for smith the sniper got him at the end of it rumbling bumble in the stumbler would have been his second touchdown of the year and pressure in the face of shelley got to get rid of it and he lives to play for second and goal especially when you have a dynamic dynamic quarterback like shelly shelly can move around so the play is never over with until you hear the final snap or the final whistle you can just keep running with him keep going through your routes we call a scramble drill make sure you go out there make yourself available to this quarterback because he has the ability to move around use his feet and find an over target that'd be exhausting as a db well his exhausted people was all more exhausting to an offensive line that's blocking for him personal experience there yeah yeah played with randall cunham you know guys like that played with ben brothers burger the play was never over with him never same could be said for shelley who's led missouri state to second and goal and he gets it inside for lethulis and he's inside the five third down coming yeah see the passing game just opened up the running game a little bit they were able to run the read option to the back side defensive end stayed outside he handed off to the running back and i mean you know it's not always a game black block a game breaking play sometimes those three and four yard runs start breaking and then once they start running those that's when you get the chunk yardage two players to get the touchdown here absolutely no no kicking this he went for it on fourth down down this way earlier shelley to pass open man touchdown for lethulis and missouri state back in front in the second half good play design you know he kind of creeped out of the backfield over lost his the guy that was covering him in the linebacker great play selection so they don't need fourth down right i watch that he slides through he gets lost the linebacker loses where he is he's open for the touchdown kind of leaked out of the backfield so lethulis a guy that's taken it to another level in the final month of the season couple 100-yard rushing games was huge in a win on the road in carbondale at siu and then capped off the regular season with a career game last week against dixie state now a playoff touchdown for lethulis bears back in front by a five spot it's key von batulis with the score you're watching the fcs playoffs round one with all roads leading to frisco texas winner here from springfield is on bozeman montana next week seeing montana state and missouri state just went on top key von letulis former wide receiver in his prep career and in junior college with a touchdown great play design bob leaked him out of the backfield up underneath linebackers lose where he was he's able to make the score for the touchdown catch and kind of in that that natural space where he's used to kilgore college before missouri state catching a bunch of balls peyton logan up across the 25. so decent field position for dresser win and ut martin to come back out now playing from behind again and there's a flag down at the end of that kickoff return from logan during the return illegal block in the back receiving team number 19 10 yard penalty first down so the decent field position never minds lucas blocking for logan so here comes dresser win again documented a little bit earlier but had a shoulder injury that required surgery 2018 missed all of 2019 for the most part 2020 in the spring got a chance to to start again broke his ankle got back for the beginning of fall camp for ut martin and keon howard had transferred from tulane so there wasn't a spot for him wasn't fully healthy yet for a lot of the fall but starting his first game and has played well for the most part played very very well he's handing it off on first down to zach wallace and that front for missouri state continues to swarm you know they're playing big up front you know they really don't have to send the linebackers that's just a little added incentive but those guys up front are taking the offensive line and reestablishing the new line of scrimmage one or two yards behind the line of scrimmage and look who's back in after going out with the injury wilts yeah i knew he wasn't staying out too long you know he's the inspirational leader of that team he's one of you know he's the cog to make that whole machine run you gotta pick in this game leading tackler for the bears back in as that's threaded in there to williams and he's got a first down that's been a nice connection today yes nice little dig right in front of the dbs they actually had a bracket bracket covered but he was able to sit down in that zone run across hit him on the zone going across good play by him understanding where he needs to be in order for the ball to be delivered to him on the dig route first play-off game for donald williams comes in his home state he's from out your way yeah he's a st louis guy okay grew up just off the hill in st louis so after the williams first down back to the ground it's wallace and it's short gain after short gain if anything but wallace did get positive yards here yeah it's tough sledding you know there he is again look i mean there he is all the time there to make a play wherever the ball is you'll find out where where wilts is you got ellis down in the field looks like titus wall might be down as well that's that's wall there the strong safety from missouri state their second leading tackler so last drive it was their top tackler that went out wilts back in there but wall will be out at least to play yeah you know he's he's also a guy that you know they can't afford to lose you know he he's back there in that secondary and you know he's a lot of the reason why they don't have those big plays is because of him so he's gonna have to come back in the game in a little bit you know but you know understanding that this defense has got to slot has to stop this passing offense a dresser win he is playing a phenomenal game getting to his wide receivers the play selection has changed all together different from what we're used to seeing from ut martin so wall's backup is dwight jacobs sophomore comes in in the secondary for titus wald again out for at least this play with the younger jacobs coming in and win going to the opposite side he's got one-on-one coverage and another deep ball to donnell williams got past joe again taking advantage of the rookie years they run a little out and up against the rookie that's just a veteran wide receiver taking advantage of the size and speed and you know hey la andre joe there's wallace tough day his longest run of the day zach wallace near another first down before braswell got to him that's the pass opening up the run gives you an opportunity to pull somebody off the box a little tempo here for ut martin after the run right back to wallace carving out space and a touchdown not much doing on the ground all day but now two rushing touchdowns wallace puts ut martin ahead wow you know the pass opening up for the run you got to take that defender off the box and once you take that defender out the box for coverage it gives you a chance to run you know it also helps that wilt their best linebacker he's been limping around a little bit he's not all the way healthy so they're taking advantage of his inability to go up there and make plays that he made the first half all day so both wallace and logan have scored it and after the missouri state score larko makes it a ut martin lead after the wallace touchdown run simple inside zone look get up to the linebacker you know they haven't been blocked all day how many times you've seen will get blocked one on one by a guard like this all day watch big number 72 gets up on him and blocks him he usually sheds that block but he can't do it because his power's not off he's you know he's he he's kind of injured so what does he do cuts off the block for the touchdown they ran that explicitly at wilts on that play well we got the shot of wilts kind of limping off too yes it's hard to throw a guy that's 320 pounds off you when you're as small as wilts is you know it's hard if you if you're healthy it's a possibility but when you're unhealthy is really hard so it was all set up by the long connection with donald williams again that got zach wallace back-to-back runs then the touchdown win is having a phenomenal game 238 yards for dresser win over 50 percent so more efficient in the second half as well braswell will bring this one out from the end zone and he sheds a couple of tackles look out here he's got some space and good field position out to the 35 for missouri state we have to check and make sure there's no flags definitely a great turn return gives him a little space trying to flip the field a little bit on the kickoff return give his office a little more to work with for the second half close game we got an exciting game close game you know there's a lot of injuries right now this is a close exciting game yeah it is with a ton at stake winner on to montana state next week for the round of 16. get a shot at the national seed in bozeman montana shelley had the pass play for a touchdown to letulis last drive and now to xavier lane to begin this one he's across the 40. shelly taking his time reading the defense waiting for somebody to pop open off the line gave him some time on the play xavier lane did not play last week against dixie state he was on the sideline in sweats bobby petrino told us he could have gone but the the rest serving him well in the second and third quarter of this game targeted a couple of times now by shelley after the slow start you know this is kind of you know i don't understand how they do it but missouri state flip-flops their offensive line you know it's hard enough for me to go from the left side to the right side during the season but these kids go every almost every play where they may start off on the left side and move to the right side and the strong side usually run on that side right now the strong sides to the right let's see where the ball goes well they give those guys a chance to run block and uh bouncy von letulis pays off those guys flip-flopping on the offensive line yeah they go they run to the right side he just cuts it back they run to the right side to get moving up front that's a great play on first down to move the sticks like that they just flip-flopped again now let's see where the ball goes now it's a shuttle run for those guys going side to side [Applause] this is something the petrinos have always done in their offense whether it's bobby or nick his son now the offensive coordinator and that off target xavier lane the target again but off his hands yeah you know that's that's that's truly something that i i hadn't seen before when you have office a lot of flip-flops like that because for me it kind of throws them off balance for the strong side of your off you know strong side of your body the strong side of your body when you go back and forth like that to switch it like that you got to be a phenomenal athlete to do that it does help there's been a lot of continuity on missouri state's offensive line four of the five starters have started every single game for them and xavier lane busy on this drive and back healthy this week and looking strong for a first down yeah you know he went and grabbed that and took him and then yak yard is after that runs a little stop route on this play make sure he catches the ball first runs presses stop route then turns around and gets the yak yard as they need keep the sticks moving well each of the top three targets from missouri state barrett are six three or taller right they've got a basketball team out there at wide receiver kind of the same makeup of rodney williams for ut martin their tight end catching balls down the seam shelly with the pull read through the back door and he gets tabletop out of bounds after about a five yard pickup you know now second and five you know second and manageable you know when the offenses are clicking like this and really tough on defenses because now you stay on the field you keep the sticks moving then the defensive line starts to get up slower and slower you start to see their hands on their hips they start moving a little slower get into the huddle these are all things you can do if you keep their defense on the field yeah sustainable drive after the the big play to the tight end isaac smith set up the quick score on the last drive so working their way down the field now taking their shot and it's lane again with the flag there you talked basketball and won he was able to block him out at the end to go catch the ball get in front of the db and the reason why he was able to do this the offensive line gave him a long time gave him plenty of time to go out there and make a play watch how much time they give them pass interference defense number ten kelsey c klein this also plays a touchdown you know watch how much time they are allowing shelley to sit back in the pocket then he gets to go in this second third read he kind of threw the db to the side swam a little bit and was able to come back for the ball the db never turned around to see where the ball was and that's why he got the pass interference call talking about a flip-flop they going tit-for-tat as far as scores and it's another big passing play that sets up the score this time getting it all the way in with xavier lane his third touchdown of the year man are they happy to have him back three catches on that drive taking control of the game so pizano is making a five-point game again and after three punts began the second half three touchdowns have followed that xavier lane with the latest it's starting to settle down look he runs up stutter go beats the tv but then he turns around he underthrows it shelly underthrows it and then lane is able to come back and catch the ball got the penalty and the catch for the touchdown so it seems as though right now i guess the last team that has the ball at the end of the game is going to win because no nobody's being stopped on defense right now they're moving the ball down the field consistently now started the second half it looked like we were headed for 1917 into the fourth quarter so the chance to answer coming for jason simpson and ut martin but man xavier lane a guy that played for jeff brom who's now the purdue head coach jeff brown followed bobby petrino at western kentucky lane played for him so the terminology with petrino when he got here was basically exactly the same he's taught the rest of the receivers the terminology with petrino yeah he just stepped right in so xavier lane with the touchdown fighting through the penalty now five point lead for the bears and final couple of plays coming in this third quarter with win back out it's going to be crucial for win to go out there reestablish the passing game once he did that the run game opened up for him that's where they had the most consistent in the second half when they threw the ball to open up the run which allowed them then to move the offense and keep that defense on the field a little well longer this does become a shootout like it has the past couple of drives keep in mind wind at the back of ut martin here we'll be going into the wind in the fourth quarter be at the back of jason shelly i haven't seen a lot of the two backs yet but successful run for zach wallace and they're starting to move it forward through the run couple of touchdowns now first down yeah less aggressive in the play calling on the defensive side of the ball of missouri state now you know they ran a lot of cross dogs and in the first half but that's when wilt was have healthy wind was pleading for the snap get one last playoff before the start of the fourth quarter and wallace dropped after a yard so we go to the fourth quarter with montana state looking on wondering who they'll play next week in bozeman winner gets the national seed and it's a one score game going to the fourth quarter from plaster stadium in springfield missouri fcs playoffs round one should be a great finish coming up so two straight scoring drives from missouri state ut martin trying to answer back take the lead back with their second straight scoring drive connor onion barrett brooks and barrett the the ground game has shown some improvement had some legs here in the second half yeah it's starting to open up now you know and defensively i think this ut martin team is starting to take advantage of missouri state's defense especially with wilt number 10 being hurt and not being as consistently fast as he was at the beginning of the game yeah the two big injuries at least for the moment for missouri state wilts went down wall went out both guys are back in it linebacker and safety but more good groundwork this is peyton logan across midfield and another first down for the skyhawks yeah well i mean i i would like to watch that again you know because i'll show you the difference between what we saw in wilton the first half what we saw now when we watch the replay he is just you know phenomenal in coming in and making things happen in the backfield [Applause] so logan stays in after the first down run and wilts is there to meet him so they keep it inside after the outside run yeah but you know watch from the previous play watch wilts on this watch how he shows up in the playing in in the monitor but look he didn't do that in the first half you know he got just juked out of the socks on that play right there and he didn't do that in the first half first half he was able to come up make that play he's not as mobile and versatile as he was in the first half you could tell this injury is having a major effect on his ability to play at a high [Applause] level so we've seen that even out a little bit with the depth being tested of ut martin's offensive line injuries at left guard and right tackle [Applause] and a ball that's thrown away for dress or win playing for third down yeah good good decision by when there was nobody open uh you know it's better to live another day than go ahead and force it ball in which you know it could end up in a turnover and you know they don't need any more turnovers right now so the blaster stadium crowd coming alive on third down and seven bears defense trying to get a stop after ut martin got to go ahead and score that last trip down theater bracketing rodney williams on the outside in the slot zach sanders as the initial guy faked the handoff to castleberry and win slides giving himself up before the first down marker this could be two to get one though fourth down and medium coming up and we'll see if they keep the offense on the field looks like they will yeah do you chance that [Applause] you're not getting no man's name land right now you can't kick a field goal so either you punt it or go for it nope never mind jason simpson had the offense kind of stalling out there took a look at it now larko comes out he better watch the fake on this you got the missouri state sideline saying just that got six guys down there saying watch the fake [Applause] larko does get a good one off banging it inside the 10. oh and it sits down great kick way to make up for the bad kick he had the bad pun he had in the first half that's a phenomenal kick on the two-yard line cue the for the brand celebration for tyler larco little skyhawks punter kicker smart larco you you said he's your inspiration just made it a long field for missouri state he's my hebrew now you know he he fought back from a bad punt you know but you know realistically on this defense right now that you know the u2 martin has on the field watch for the cross dog inside right up the middle so see how aggressive missouri state gets to backed up shadow of their own end zone going to that goal line look with the full back again and they do keep it on the ground with little and not much there that defensive front you're just talking about does stand up strong and it's jay rogers making the play yeah they got their short yardage defense in there kind of like if they were on the goal line so missouri state forced the punt denied ut martin of a go-ahead drive bears have scored on back-to-back drives with trying to take it 98 yards on this one do let shelly throw it out of the end zone and that's why they get it out to scott and he just trucks his way for a first down scott shows a lot of power right there you know he never gives up on the play catches the ball and takes takes the db for a ride for the first down that's just strength in size back to back weeks for scott where a missouri state record has gone down hoping to keep breaking records move on to the second round next week a little breathing room now for the bears shelley putting the stiff arm on and he's driven out of bounds patient running by shelly on that play kind of picked and choose set up his blocks a little bit on the outside you know and go with the read option he reads it sees that he's gonna they're gonna tackle running back he just plays patiently just runs and keeps running that's close to being a failure out there on the inside also and john john ford was the the third man over there so much more through the air for shelley including that xavier lane touchdown pass he had flags all over him on and pick pickett tracks down shelley you talk about match-ups that are best against best the legs of shelley against the anchor that defensive line austin pickett yeah you know he's just keeping it you know he said all right look i'm the best player on the offensive side of the ball for this team let me take it and make some things happen he just wants to show you know he's good enough to carry this team on his shoulders another injured player on the field back for third and one after this missouri state trying to keep the drive alive well it's good to see the smile on the face of devin sims he was down for a couple of minutes and uh tim's getting uh loosened up there here's the play that he just made the hell with the helmet on that play twice with his own guy too that's w pleasant right there gets hit twice on one play in the head that's tough yeah difficult day for both teams top tacklers sims going out with injury wilts the leading tackler from missouri state went down a couple of times so third down and one with missouri state trying to keep the drive alive sims not out there but still some penetration to drag down little in the backfield yeah that's that's kind of a you know weird play call to me when you try to run to the outside you just want to stick it up there and get the first down they run a stretch play pull the offensive guard around and um you know ut martin's able to get penetration like they've been getting all day they've shown the ability to get up the field and create a new line of scrimmage by getting penetration i don't know why they would run to the outside like that it was tevin ship setting the edge at linebacker up there on the line of scrimmage and it's uh a punt off right now friendly bounces after the the larko punt good one off for burquettes missouri time out on the field it's our time out i guess you're watching the fcs playoffs round one with frisco texas the site of the national championship game in a couple of weeks with barrett brooks con runyon winner to boseman montana and these would be historic wins bobby petrino trying to deliver first playoff win since 1989 for the bears wow it would be the first ever for ut martin their second trip over to the playoffs so that's what's at stake the final 10-11 with dresser win and ut martin onto the field looking for points after they punted last time out and two peyton logan who's carved out some more space in the second half to go with his first half touchdown you know both teams are starting to run the ball consistently now and you do that to really wear down the defense that way they don't have a pass rush it's harder as the defensive lineman to stop the run as opposed to stopping the pass pass rushing is easy stopping the run which takes a lot out of your body that's why they have more time in in passing plays because the defensive line are running like that we got a quick throw out to roberts first down ut martin i tell you with peyton logan it doesn't seem this way with the penetration missouri state was getting early but he's averaging over seven yards of carry in this game well that's because they just declined to run early in the game they just stopped it because wynn was throwing the ball so consistently and well now they're starting to lean on it a little bit and it's starting to pay dividends for them because those guys up front i was aligned up front are starting to win the war of attrition starting to make that defensive line work a little bit run stopping back-to-back throws for dresser win gotta get it out quick to the outside to odom and he's got nothing going backwards with kyrie mcdonald and there is a flag down on the opposite side of where mcdonald made that play holding offense 54. cozy's decline he's overplayed second down it's on the center maiden hachi yeah they runner they ran a cross dog on that play in the middle of that defensive line so you know one linebreaker goes and the backside linebacker goes and he just held him because he had beat him over the top those linebackers pretty athletic it's hard for a center to snatch ball get his head up and then stop across dog blitz how about a safety mcdonald on a slot guy odom with that open field tackle yeah i mean that's a great play so missouri state does decline it after the nine yard loss and wins pass does drop incomplete out to jaden gibbs gibbs came into this game looking for his first career catch has been involved as a redshirt freshman he's played in nine of the 11 regular season games but uh that one not connected with with dress or wim yeah they're starting to get to the bottom of the barrel as far as players you know a lot of players are hurt so they're going to players they wouldn't necessarily see on the field out of necessity how good did these players know the offense that's you know that's what's key right now gibbs a young player but does have some talent with a three-star recruit that had a kentucky offer coming out of high school ut martin taking their first time out of the second half before this third down and 19. see how deep that playsheet is for coach simpson yeah there's not a lot of plays for this you know third and 19. you know what they do have the ability to do is set up key match-ups you know and wanted to keep match up they haven't been to in the second half it's rodney williams line them up in the slot their big tight end slash wide receiver against you know maybe a safety so keon howard the starter for most of the year the ovc player of the year on offense see him in the boot he has two of the three ligaments in his foot that are torn right now and if there was a third one that did get torn that would require surgery so he tried to give it a go last week practiced a little bit but no go this week for the playoffs so it's been dresser win who's impressed he's definitely impressed but now in a tenuous spot here on third down and 19. so after the timeout win to the air on the obvious passing down and he goes down sacked for another big loss and missouri state gets home with devin gorey great pass rush on the outside they run a little game but then he turns the corner great ankle bend around the corner not allowing wind to be uh comfortable in that pocket so watching the outside set beats him inside great play by defensive end on that play devin gorey has been a good compliment to kevin ellis off that edge knows his fifth sack of the season larco gets another ut martin bounce that devin gory was a problem a couple of weeks ago in a conference game against siu had a couple of sacks he gets the bears offense back out after this up five devin gorey getting the ball back from missouri state out of denton texas so he's a guide like jason shelly trying to make a run for missouri state get back to their home state frisco texas for the national title jason shelly actually from frisco so three wins and he would go back home here on this playoff run potentially for missouri state he's back out and a quick set floated out to his running back and the tulis tripped up out of bounds chased down by stevens to open up this drive so big one on both sides missouri state can make this a two score game and make it hurt late for ut martin skyhawks try to get it back and get the go ahead score on their side they're trying to play with a little tempo right now on second and ten shelley playing with that tempo gets it out to scott and he's planted by shamburger and it's third down and very manageable for this missouri state offense you know what this is where you run the ball just just to you know take their mind off a little bit because they've they've had some holes against this ut defense right now do you run it up the middle or do you give shelly a chance to use his arm and hope that he has the proper mechanics you know you out there you have xavier lane one-on-one unless it's quarterback run it's a pass with nobody back there and shelly always a threat with his legs and reaching for it baker did everything he could not let shelley get there and baker kept him a yard short great play by baker but you know look at shelley almost flew like superman to try to pick up the first down where'd the ball land eventually five yards back right after it went flying but the the punt team is out what do you think about this yeah i would punt it simply because you know there's a lot of time left in the games over six minutes left your defense is playing well in your own territory too you have the lead right now when you're missouri state your defense is playing well enough you know they're keeping them out three and out all right so dresser win against bobby petrino's defense i mean this is when you know he takes the field you know you got to be thinking i got to get the ball down the field you know use your deep threats to really make an impact on this defense that way you can run it up the middle once or twice just to get the sticks moving take some time off the clock and it'd be advantageous for them to run up you know a more balanced offense right now as opposed to just throwing the ball dresser win from 10 minutes from martin tennessee won a state title at dresden high school can he deliver a drive they would remember forever in his home area and it starts with a run so they they go to the grounds and keep it out of wins hands on first down not a bad thought with how ut martin has started to run the ball in the second half yeah they they've opened it up a little bit and they might be trying to bring that safety back into the box call a more aggressive game by missouri state then they can use on the outside and get it open over the top off the play fake to logan banged in there and williams off his back kip couldn't haul it in thought he should have had it he did yeah inside slam play you know to rodney williams this is this good play selection just run this little simple slant go take it inside you know you got to catch that that was a very catchable ball big players step up and big time plays and he didn't step up that time i need to see more out of rodney williams and he's caught just about everything that set it his way today including a couple contested shots down the seam so third and seven will be a quick trip to the field for the offense for ut martin or will they keep it going and logan riding the back of his own man he's still up with whistles blowing and they blow this play dead logan was riding the back of his own offensive lineman and looked to break free but they say he's down short of the first down marker this is hard you know you know this is a hard play you know to really judge no he was never down he was never down quick whistle quick whistle quick whistle yeah i mean if you look at it you know he never touched the ground so the the punt team is out for ut martin and not going to review so larco gets it away missouri state somewhat luckily getting the ball back with a flag down behind the return for navion mitchell so logan was not down a big break for the bears return to number 31 10-yard penalty first down and that backs up shelley petrina and the offense but this is uh this is the run for logan and simpson understandably upset yeah you want to watch this play you know he was never down never down on the play his arm just went down that's just a running back you know just keeping his feet on the play and it could have gone for a touchdown too yes you know i hate to see this type of things happen to a team you know you're out there playing your heart off and it was a play in which you know it's directly affected by the officials on the play all right so missouri state can make it hurt with another score now approaching five minutes and it's manning up the gut for not much we seem to get you know ut martin got a new enthusiasm out of playing defense now they're flying around a little better now they took it upon themselves to be effective in this game to really stop this offense they're behind with four minutes left this is where you know the big players stand up on second down it's shelley pressure he escapes it for the moment but pickett's there to swallow him up this great push up front but watch the guys on the outside are able to keep them in the pocket in their passwords to keep them in the pocket spins out that's just a great great play by the defensive line austin pickett who's undersized as a nose guard in the league you know only sitting at 270 pounds but he's making an impact just with his speed and aggressiveness he's a really good athlete playing interior that defensive line the first guy that bobby petrino mentions when talking about ut martin's defense this week was austin pickett setting up third down and nine shelley has a clean window to throw through and it's picked off by john ford a fifth turnover for the ut martin defense gets them the ball back inside bears territory yeah you know just a bad pass by jason shelley defense sitting right there reacting you know he didn't even look the guy off right there you know he stared him down and threw it directly to him and john ford has been great at that all year long he's the leader as a linebacker in picks for a team that gets a lot of them in ut martin that's his fourth he's a big guy that can run cover he can do just anything just about anything on that linebacker court that you need so with this field position it's almost like the the logan run counted yes that's what you call good karma and timeout ut martin this was after the john ford interception ut martin getting it back and down by five check this out slam time it's vince carter sticking your arm in the room there you go anything to get you going big time player makes a big play when the lights are on and you need them and set up by the picket play before that so talk me through this defensively for missouri state got a short field behind you what are you looking at against dress for winning the ut martin offense they got to return it to for tat you know this defense has shown the ability to go out there and make plays they got to continue to pressure you win up front making them uncomfortable in the pocket that's the only way they can really stop this defense if they can create pressure up the middle make when come outside the pocket move outside the pocket it gives a better chance to make some plays against wynn he's not a he's a functional mobility quarterback as opposed to being a dual threat quarterback like you having shelly win can't throw the ball outside the pocket but he's more effective when he sits out there evaluates the defense and can push the ball down the second to third reads remember this missouri state team rode their defense to the playoffs last year it's been more their offense this season is win going up top for the lead and it's donald williams one more time and a big play no time wasted after the turnover huge play on the outside we talked about getting pressure up the middle to make wind move off the spot well they didn't get that pressure they was he was able to sit back evaluate what's going on in front of him and then throw the nice pass plate for the nine route you know over the middle for williams that's great confidence in your wide receiver on the outside giving this guy a chance to go up there and make a big play so ut martin will keep the offense out no good going up two at this point try to go up a field goal with 336 left and dresser win just his second game this season his first start since the spring season with all the injuries with a big time throw and that next throw is incomplete to williams but the flag is out flagler to play past interference offense number 11. companies decline the try is no good you watch this play on the outside we're talking about a big time receiver going up to make a big time play waves has been there all day no pressure on the quarterback he just runs a little nine route in the middle post and goes up there and makes a play he's on their best cover man also montre braswell beats him on the inside and then goes up and gets the 50 50 ball big time players make big time plays even though he was going against their best back on the defense side of the ball and missouri state sent both of their top corners at him today la andre joe's had him for a little bit it's been montre braswell for a little bit and a touchdown for ut martin we're talking about the the defense riding this thing out from missouri state last year into the playoffs it's been mostly the offense this year and it's looking like it's going to come down to the offense and the guys that they call the cardiac bears trying for another fourth quarter comeback like they've done four times already this year connor we have a great game going on here and is really going to end up being whoever has the ball last you know both offenses are doing their thing and you know when you look at uh this missouri state team they have the ability to move the ball down the field if shelly goes and takes control of the game it's all imperative on him being able to go out there and make plays from either running it on broken down plays or he has to deliver some pinpoint accurate type of balls and he can only do that if he goes out and use the proper technique could this be the last touch of the game for the missouri state offense if it is it begins well with xavier lane out for a first down and a shoot top catch into a wobbling dance on the ground yeah you know watches he doesn't step through on that play because he couldn't too many guys in front of him he couldn't follow through with it he has a strong arm but his arm can be even more accurate and better if he's able to step through during plays three timeouts three plus minutes plenty of time for missouri state needing a field goal and probably thinking six and xavier lane and jay woods back to that match up this time it's woods yeah they're fighting back and forth man this is this is what you call big time football who's going to step up and make a play you got another injured player down for ut martin wow it's really come to the war of attrition this game two teams battling it out winners of their conference this is what football is all about going out and playing effective big time football what a response for jason simpson and ut martin he was spitting mad after the the peyton logan call didn't go his way team gets an interception from john ford and dress her win with a big strike to donnell williams who by the way has close to 180 yards through the air today i knew it was i was just thinking to myself how many yards does williams have he's shown big playability it didn't matter who's lined up on him i used to think i was saying earlier he was going against the rookie for the most part but you know this time you know this is the best defensive player as far as corner he goes he runs a little shell the nine route and able to go up and catch that 50 50 ball showed strong hands catches it his highest point comes down with the catch phenomenal game seven catches 178 yards how does 25 yards a catch sound 25 yards a catch unbelievable so it's jay rogers coming off under donna williams had the go-ahead score you got to think back to the miss p-a-t for ut martin too that forced them to go for two and they didn't get it missed a p-a-t that would have made it 10-7 in the first half so that situation sets up a one-point game with three minutes to go jason shelly taking his shot had his man tyrone scott but it's jay woods hip to hip i'll tell you what austin pickett is a monster on that defensive line he is making that center and giving him the blues making him move his feet and at this point he's winning he's winning the battle he's almost unblockable just by one person he is given right now that offensive line the blues because he's so quick so elusive and he's able to move around and they can hardly block him he will be a major reason if they win this game how about this initial look from ut martin nobody with their hand in the grounds on third down and it's out short of the line to gain to jordan murray and fourth down is coming needing two yards to keep the drive going yes the swiss army knife o'shea baker coming up to make a play again whether he's a safety linebacker rover wherever he is he's making big plays in this game start of the year at corner moved to safety jacquez aikens out for ut martin so now he's a linebacker still three timeouts from missouri state so this isn't the game but a big play right here on fourth down and two for jason shelly and the bears everybody up at the line shelly through the air over the top it's incomplete couple of strides too tall for the tight end tia vossue great penetration up the middle great penetration up the metal may shelly move his feet couldn't step up to throw an accurate ball look at the push they're getting the pass rusher that's a great way to finish the play without causing a penalty of hitting the quarterback he threw it he didn't touch him and how many great deep ball throws have we seen from jason shelly this year and just a touch too strong on that one just a touch it's up to the missouri state defense to step up we'll see how they manage their timeouts with ut martin up one looking for their first playoff win ever and uh good start defensively they want that ball back and the ball is out ball is out at the end of the play with the hit coming from eric johnson and ut martin does have it unbelievable this is an incredible game so when we were talking about that defense getting penetration on the other side it came right back penetration look you know they beat the inside blocks they slam it to the inside and then they're you know they're not just tackling they're grabbing for the ball that's a great play grabbing the ball if you were to put a label on eric johnson it would be a pressure creator tackle for a loss and now you know he's done everything up front he's he's he's that movable object up front in which they can't they don't have an answer for him great plays going up there creating penetration stopping a run play by just playing with great effort great effort so it's been a lot on the offense creating these moments central arkansas then there's three conference games where they come back against playoff teams south dakota and northern iowa but now it's on the defense to get the ball back in shelly's hands it's time to go out there and make a play who's going to step up eric johnson made the initial play on this drive a guy that's been through some of the lean years in this program it's been around for for five seasons and now playing in back-to-back gears in the playoffs [Applause] he's lined up right over the ball for the bears win keeps it himself all the attention on the back and wind plays it safe sliding so he gets past the initial line of scrimmage but did give himself up after a short game that's not his strong suit moving around and and making plays like that his big thing is he can move the ball down the field with his arm i think that's where they want and that's where he's most comfortable at but he also has to understand this is where the big players step up wind has to go out there and make a play whether it's with his arm his leg or whatever it's imperative that if he keeps these sticks moving that they can close this game out there's only two minutes and two seconds left on the clock winner goes on so that's the that's the new dresser win because he's less than eight months off of a broken ankle in the spring and got back in time for camp but we've seen him still hobbled a little bit touchdown run last week wasn't fully healthy you can see a little limp in his walk now his gate is kind of off when he's running but the ball's been in his hands and big moments through the air today 272 yards two touchdowns and he's aired it out 43 times [Applause] on the third and eight it's to zach wallace in missouri state with one time out in the bag we'll use that final one before presumably a punt to get the ball back and try to win a playoff game this is big time fcs football playoffs fbs could take a page out of this book right here man because you know it's fcs teams you know they got a playoff system you know the best players win and move on this is what i'm talking about as far as great football playoff football at the end of the season well this is a win that they would hang plaques for [Laughter] here comes my superstar [Applause] let's go tyler tyler larco wants to be player of the game man this could make him play the game if he pins him down there [Music] [Applause] he did it once before pin missouri stayed down at the two but missouri state thinking block here bringing heat but larko gets it off clean and then mitchell has some space out of return got through the initial surge and brings it out to the 20. so no timeouts 145 to go a field goal could win it for missouri state to get their first playoff win since 1989. i got butterflies man connor i can't call games like this man cause i feel like i'm in a hunt i feel like i'm out there playing right now it's third and ten for me as an office alignment so i'm really hyped right now this is where the men get separated from the boys this is where you got to go out there and really impose your will whether on the defensive side or the offensive side no giving up on me now no we can't man we got to make it happen let's go ut martin looking for that first playoff win ever could come down to this drive right here shelley given all day to throw and he's got to complete to xavier lane who tiptoes out of bounds you give him time he can deliver the ball i mean look you know he can step up and throw across here's lane running across the formation on a crossing route he speeds it up able to you know deliver the ball to him completes the catch big second half for xavier lane slow start for him approaching 100 yards also has a touchdown that put missouri state ahead earlier right back to lane and across midfield close to another first down so back-to-back chunk plays to xavier lane have missouri state pressing toward field goal range with a big leg of jose pizano on the sideline waiting for a potential game-winner slam play on the outside give it to your best receiver right now who's hot you know lane has the hot hand [Music] [Applause] he got nine setting up second down and one and that's picked off baker had the hit and it's stevens that has the ricochet for ut martin unbelievable play someone plays a fortune those guys hit each other at the same time ball pops out and an opportunistic defense comes up and makes the play a turnover filled day for the ut martin defense and that may have just sealed their first play-off win ever for jay simpson two players are down on the field right now you know the initial contact right there of the make-up play both guys are on the turf so that's the concern right now on on both sides but jason simpson and ut martin look like they have the the first playoff win ever after a close call in o6 a call that went against them that they responded to with the turnover now they have six takeaways on the day you know they throw a slint round on the from the outside on in the initial hit pops the ball in the air does winner go home you know this is what player football is all about there have been so many turnovers in this game is how you finish right now that's going to dictate what's going on defensively ut martin showing the ability to go out there and stop missouri state's offense would not let shelley be comfortable in the pocket so because of that you know sometimes as a quarterback you know you see things that aren't there he had a little time to do it he delivered a catchable ball but he's got you know receiver got separated from the ball great play by the defense go out there impose their will and get the crucial turnover that might seal the deal for this game for ut martin missouri state can't stop it so it will seal it how about o'shea baker too playing out of position third different position he's played this year coming up coming up with a hit and then a couple more snaps will do it what a playoff game i mean how many times we say his name today making big plays whether it's coming up and stopping a run or blitzing or right there jarring the ball from the receiver for a big play so ut martin has never won a playoff game until today they were owen six against missouri state this would be their 10th win which will be the second most in program history matching a division two national title team in 1967. and they're headed to take on montana state in the second round next week coming on the road to springfield jason simpson and the skyhawks have their first playoff win ever what's about the walking wounded you mean this team is utterly shameless with the amount of players that they have they were weren't able to play not able to make the trip but they come out there come out here and oppose the wheel in springfield against a very good missouri state team and it was dresser win filling in for keon howard the ovc offensive player of the year and the gatorade bath for jason simpson told you this was one that they hang a plaque for maybe a banner up at their home field at ut martin and a day that jason simpson in the weekend that jason simpson and his family will remember for a long time with his son winning his play off game two you know unbelievable game uh jesse win comes out and plays dresser wind comes out and plays at a phenomenal leather level they totally go out and and change the offense for him it turns into a passing type of team now off the line had to adjust had so many guys playing out of position guards moving the tackle freshman's coming in and playing against a really really good missouri front four and they were able to stand it the test of time you know throughout this game they imposed their will they won the war of attrition even though they were the walking wounded this is a huge game ut martin played phenomenally and i got to give you know credit to this missouri state team they played hard but it's a winner go home tournament you know this is the end of you know a lot of seniors on that missouri state team but at this point ut martin those seniors get to keep playing they got to practice next week you know we watched a great game today oh the the elation on one side the agony on the other for missouri state such a great season for them back-to-back playoff trips for the first time since 89 and 90 hosting their first playoff game but it was dresser win in relief through all the injuries the local guy from tennessee close to home 10 minutes from home at ut martin beating bobby petrino and missouri state so this is what's coming up next week for ut martin an updated look at the bracket after the first round games today still more to come today of course on the espn family of networks but it's on to bozeman montana the number eight seed yeah number eight montana state's coming up for ut martin trip out to bozeman next saturday afternoon yeah you look at the brackets there's some pretty good games next week you know i think me and you are on the call montana state against ut martin the villanova holy cross game is going to be a big game you know there's a lot of good football going into the second round yep so that's how it shapes up next week this side of the bracket is secure for next friday and next saturday all on espn plus ut martin will be off of that first play-off whenever and see how quickly against national seed they can turn it around after an emotional win today against these weapons for the number eight seed montana state yeah you know talk about the quarterback and but they mcrae really good as far as being a dual threat does everything well you know look at 16 touchdowns to three interceptions you know 60 to 62 completion rate i looked at this be a great game kind of the same game we just saw today two teams that are very good this is going to be a battle and mckay a low turnover quarterback he'll be seeing a defense that just for six turnovers to get the win today great working with you we'll see you next week in bozeman definitely see you next week all right thank you sarah brooks connor onion thanks to our entire crew here in springfield led by jeff graham our producer in the truck and kevin shankar director as well it's the first playoff win ever for ut martin back in fourth second half and the skyhawks hang on to win it by one behind dresser win in donnell williams barrett and i will talk to you next week in bozeman montana same time next saturday here on espn plus thanks for watching this has been round one of the fcs playoffs from springfield missouri
