it is a damp and chilly Saturday evening in Northeast Ohio is the number one team in FCS football North Dakota State comes East to take on the Youngstown State Penguins hello everyone and welcome inside Stambaugh Stadium or as it's more affectionately dubbed the ice castle alongside Dean and Hughes I'm Lynn griddle it's great to have you with us for what should be an exciting FCS matchup here this evening for Youngstown State trying to play their way into the playoffs in a win over the number one team in the country would go a long ways towards that cause absolutely this is a very good team the Youngstown State team started off this season really on fire in top 10 rankings but has slipped these last four weeks so they're hoping to get back on on the right path they did that last week with a big win now they need that momentum to continue on and on the other side is North Dakota State and go on team in the country they've won seven to the last eight national championships 29 wins in a row for the Bison and you see them they sit on top of the Missouri Valley Football Conference standings at four and a Western Illinois winner today they get off the schneid and get their first win of whose season they now sit in one and eight big win for Northern Iowa earlier today as well you said he in the conference Damon but again great opportunity for him here and they've got a chance to finish the season strong and that's what it's about the second quarter of this season is where they falter going 1 in 3 but they need some momentum and it would be a great great opportunity for them to beat the number one team in the country for North Dakota State in 2017 this was a really tough place and this has been a tough place for them to play on through the years here in Youngstown but hopefully led teams have given the Bison all they have wanted in the last four games with the Bison come out on top on top well you got to give credit to Bo Pelini he gets his team's fired up he's a fired up coach and they stepped up to the challenge came up short and each of those opportunities but they know how to compete against the Bison this is gonna be a fun game ot the last time these two teams played here at the ice castle this should be a fun matchup here for our Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week we can't wait to bring it for you when we come back we'll check in with Kelly Berg down on the sidelines and we welcome you back to Stambaugh stadium here North Dakota State and Youngstown State in Valley action North Dakota State winners of 29 consecutive games the second longest winning streak in a history of SES football and the third member of our broadcast team Kelly Burke is standing by on the sidelines new to the Youngstown State sideline this year's the hard hat and sledgehammer this is this penguins spin on the Miami Hurricanes turnover chain every time a ysu player scores a touchdown or first forces a turnover they'll get these two items and you'll notice on the sledgehammer the great.you moniker that symbolizes the culture change this team has undergone this year a blue-collar mentality and hard work the Penguins hope to be swinging that's what sledgehammer a lot tonight all right Thank You Kelly the Penguins kicked off to start this game up so NDSU will get their ball out across the 30 for their opening drive of the contest and North Dakota State is led by a fantastic freshman quarterback Trey Lance and Dayton he has a bright future at the helm of his offense I tell you what trade Lance has been outstanding with his opportunities had a small sample size last year backing up Easton stick who did a phenomenal job throughout his career but what more can you expect to have a redshirt freshman come in and take care of business to the extent that trade Lance has done that 16 touchdowns interceptions absolutely incredible as we take a look at our impact players of the game Dana we're gonna look at Adam Cofield the running back for the Bison and justice read these two guys will clash pretty much all evening long Adam Cole Phelan did an outstanding job he is the bell cow running back for the Bison 71 yard touchdown last week to seal the game but that man right there justice read he is a force in the backfield of opponents nine sacks on the season and today's impact players are brought to you by on the run the official convenience-store the Missouri Valley Football Conference on the run as everything you need in one convenient stop so the Bison keeping it on the ground and it brings up third and seven here to the front seven of the Penguins these guys up front we talked about justice Reed don't forget about one DeMarco Craig and Antoine Cook Malik Richmond who had that last tackle they make it very very tough for teams to run on Lance out of his shotgun here has trips to the far side of the formation stepping up in the pocket he's going to tuck it and run and he has hit and dropped shy of the first down and so NDSU will go three and out on their opening possession that's a big stop for Bo Pelini defense both Bellini's defense came to play this evening in that situation this is a little bit of a freshman twist right here nice job escaping but maybe a pump fake might hold those linebackers are a force them to spread just a little bit but you see the defensive technique they're spying the quarterback because they understand the running ability of trade Lance Garret Wegner to punt Jake Coates will do returning for the Penguins and he punts from his own 30 it's an end over end kick and it is bobbled and dropped and at NDSU get on top of it like they did as coats bobbled the punt and no signal yet from the officials but NDSU is saying they have it and indeed they do what a big turnover to start up this game has the Bison in business they get it right back at the 25 this is what your emotions get the best to you right here coach should not have gone after this punt or at least gotten a fair catch up a fairly short punt the oncoming coverage unit right there you can see he tried to turn his shoulders at the last second tells me his total focus was not on securing the ball big turnover for the Bison that's something the Youngstown State team cannot afford against this great team when you share talking about the recipe of beating the Bison you can't turn it over that's gonna be one of the things you're talking about all week long here's ty Brooks brakes to tackle and that is met by a host of Penguins shy of the 20 yard line it's a gain of four on first down Oh Todd Brooks is part of the one-two punch in the backfield for the Bison he and Adam Colt field as we talked about earlier guys they get a lot of the reps averaging over five yards a carry for this run dominant team this is a Youngstown State defensive unit that has a lot of talent specifically up front you talked about it already with Reed and Richmond on the ends here's Lance he'll keep it himself up the middle and again the linebackers flowing nicely to the ball there but they like their linebackers to Takata Bo Pelini this week he feels like justice Reed and Richmond are both potential next level guys in terms of the NFL but Mitchell getting extended playing time this year at linebacker ray Anderson's a guy they really laugh as well well leave the team with 41 tangles and cash Mitchell as you talked about the linebacking core has always been solid under Bellinis reign here with the Penguins they seem to give very athletic guys that are too way guys can cover the pass and run a very effectively they could use a big stop here on third and fourth of all just inside the 20 Lance setting up to pass looking downfield he had an open man but he finds it on the near sideline for Kippur as' and he has pushed out of bounds inside the 10 at the 9 he missed a touchdown to the far sideline yes there was a little bit of miscommunication in the backfield of running back Adam Cole field escapes to that left side of the screen but you can see trade lands totally focused on his left that's a nice throw and catch they're having those type of receivers Kippur us in the past RJ urzendowski they had small guys that were very shifty in the slot that can get those short yardage is necessary to extend drive the poorest the Western Michigan transfer his 13th catch of the season and the Bison knocking on the door here Lance the redshirt freshman from Marshall Minnesota puts Kobe Johnson in motion fakes the give to him nobody open he's going to take it himself across the five and bounces off a defender and into the end zone and a bison strike first here in Youngstown a nine yard touchdown run for Trey Lance his eighth on the ground this season and North Dakota State takes the turnover and turns it into points and this is great job of pass protection when you have an athletic quarterback like trade Lance oftentimes the offensive line they get the bad rep because it looks like because he's scrambling he's gotten pressure he did not have any pressure he just escaped that use his athleticism great job up front capitalizing on the mistake by the Gwynn's gets them sent six points here Griffin crosa out of the hold of James Hendricks and it is true and North Dakota State leads it 7 to nothing a 3 and out to start the but a month punt and a 25-yard Drive later and North Dakota State enjoined the early lead the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week who's sponsored by State Farm talked to an agent today at 1-800 State Farm or by visiting statefarm.com North Dakota State with a 7 to nothing lead over Youngstown State they took the ball to start the game of three and out within a month punt by Jake Coates and a four play 25 yard drive by North Dakota State and they have grabbed the early lead as the kickoff goes through the back of the end zone and Youngstown State will have their first possession of the game begin to the 25 well I'm sure what's going on in that huddle right there is just attention to detail playing a clean game they have to clean things up right now and and I'm sure they're they're ready for this opportunity on the offensive side you can look at Nate Baker the quarterback of this Youngstown State team he's dealt with injuries not only throughout his career but throughout this season as well he is a tough competitor Dana absolutely and he's coming off phenomenal game last week against Western Illinois threw for four touchdowns in the game only has four interceptions this entire season and he's gonna keep it himself here plenty of roll pump fakes and slides to a first down moving the chains across the 35 up to the 36 just as I talked with trade lands and his ability to run but maybe just the tweaks just a little bit you see right there name the maze comes out what does he do holes the linebackers with the pump fake gets the extra yardage for the first down he's got Alessi as his running back set up behind him they put em ins in motion and Baker again looking to run and he's got a room off the right side and a gain of four on first down for Nate Baker as he's pushed out of bounds by Cole karch and time to look at our impact players on this side of the ball we seen a double dose of Nate Mays but let's talk about Joe Alessi the senior running back has done an outstanding job leading rusher in the last six games for the Gwynn's 156 yards last week and then the guy that's going to be watching him Jabril Cox junior from Kansas City the linebacker is the leader of this defense that had eight tackles for loss last week for those were sacks Baker this players blown up immediately as jumping in there was mad Biegler the reserve defensive tackle out of Underwood Minnesota the junior comes in there and blows that play up along with Jack Darnell well just like we talked about in the open they proved players out twenty four seniors leave four team seniors on this team they don't miss a beat they got guys first and second strings some guys sitting on the sidelines that can go in and compete and that's what Biegler did right there this churning players in Chariton coaches in Craig ball leaves national championship Chris Klieman leaves national championships now Mad Ants is there with the same expectations third and 10 for the Penguins and Baker will dump it off to Alessi in the flat Alessi turns the corner and he's near the first down across the 45 up to the 46 and a fresh set of downs for Youngstown State good pressure from the backside by Derrick Tusker you see just a little bit of time bought in there by Nathan Mays finds Alessi out of the backfield sniffs out the first down before it too broke Oscar get tool so Mays again out of the shotgun Youngstown State with a big third down conversion to keep this drive alive and Mays looking plenty of time and then throws it wide of Kendrick Mallory on the far side of the field it brings up second and 10 the slight adjustments in this game on that last play lane you saw that the linebackers errant Merc Adele number 55 the wee side linebacker spied the quarterback they learned already early in this game that Nathan Mays can tuck the ball and run he's heard them and his drive so far they've made that slight tweak to make sure somebody's accountable for him on each step penguins in second in ten Alessi goes in motion and the option to the near side unless he takes the pitch he's up to the 45 and then he stopped there and a lot of yellow helmets flowing to the football in the run game and that's something I think everybody in the valley is accustomed to seeing from this North Dakota State defense very difficult to run to the short side with a delayed run play right here if it's a quick hitting play maybe a delayed run play allows a lot of the speedy athletic defenders for the Bison to get to that short side of the field nowhere to go for a lesson so it brings up third and 11 after a loss of one for Alessi they put Joyner the tight end in motion and it's a bobbled snap May's tries to get back on it did North Dakota State recover it no it stays with Youngstown State that brings up fourth down the Penguins will have to punt perfectly time blitz by Derrick Tusker in the middle of that field looked like it jarred Nathan maze just a bit he didn't focus on the snap another miscue for the Gwynn's forces fourth down [Music] so it's Nick DeSalvo to punt any punts from his own 29 yard line it's a good kick inside the 20 and it is fielded and then getting away is tight tight looking for somewhere to go but good coverage at the 12 yard line penguins saying they have it North Dakota State saying they have it try to sort it out in the pile and it has been tough 'old onto the football on punt returns so far this game for both teams but NDSU able to get back on it and retain possession that is the second muffed punt actually a muffed punt that was a true fumble from height on the punt return for the Bison [Music] [Music] well Youngstown State muff to punt earlier in the game Trevor heit did not luff this punt but he would fumble it at the end of the play and look how close this was for Youngstown State but NDSU gets it back and now they are buried deep in their own end they'll start to strive from their own 11 yard line here up 7-nothing trail and the 9 yard touchdown run in this contest the give is to Cole field on the right side and he looks for some room and he noses his way up to the 15 yard line on first down the right side of the offensive line for the Bison is where their strength is Cordell volson at that right tackle Zach Johnson and Carson shootin the center that's pretty much where they're gonna make a lot of their yardage in the run game behind those guys each of those offensive linemen have guarded offensive lineman of the week sometime during this season disrespect a lot from between the two running backs on that right side it's really one of the area's gaining that we when we talk about NDSU and it becomes plug and play to some degree on both lines it seems like they can just turn out guys left and right then they have three new starters from last year on the offensive line one of them of course is Zach Johnson who was an all-american a season ago but it doesn't matter they developed as well as anybody up front that's where it starts in this game [Music] every once in a while one big upset here and there but a program continues to churn and our forces every single season and it doesn't matter who's coaching who's playing how many seniors you lose they just continue to churn it out so you're exactly right with this buys the program third and seventh lands could have taken himself trying to find room bring suit tackling carries a defender across the 30-yard line and that'll be a first down for North Dakota State should mention the trail ance with two passes tonight one complete one incomplete he's now past the career mark for passes without an int to start a career I should say a 153 now for Trey Lance pretty amazing stuff for a redshirt freshman well he had the great opportunity to sit behind Easton stick and learn how to play that quarterback position looking for the home run down the field that is what super makes the catch zone [Applause] the Bison will play action and they hit it for 69 yards and a lead grows to 13 to nothing when you have a great running attack it has to be respected Youngstown State ops to go man-to-man coverage with eight men in the box holds the linebackers on to safety with the run play play-action and then Christian Watson just a nice little skinny post gets the separation easy score for the Bison third touchdown reception of the air for the sophomore out of Tampa he beat Melvin Jackson and what a strike thrown by tre Lance right on the money the Crozier kick is up and it is good and North Dakota State enjoying an early 14 nothing advantage here in the first quarter with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter the Bison clickin early and off to a really good start as you see tre Lance the freshman connects with a sophomore and celebration begins you're looking at Christian Watson the sophomore receiver out of Tampa Florida who just hauled in his third touchdown catch of the season a 69 yard strike from Trey Lancer for play 88 yard drive that span just a minute 27 for the Bison and they are up early 14 to nothing as the fair catch called for by Saran and so the ball will come out for Youngstown State Matt Entz in his first year as the head coach here at North Dakota State dated and talking with him this week one of the things that he talked about was that it was kind of a crazy turn of events when he got the job getting ready for a championship game as an assistant and then you take the team to the White House and so there was a lot of things going on beyond just getting the job as the head coach of the Bison and taking over a program that's won seven national championships in the last eight years but one of the things he said he talked about a lot during spring football is he would ask his other assistants that been there with him Rainey Hedberg being one of those guys that he would lean on and he would say all right do we still look like bison football does this still look like NDSU football and I would say so far tonight this still looks like NDSU football absolutely he's accomplished that number one goal but at the same time you know what it's slightly a little pressure taking over at the helm of the Bison program when you had such success with Craig ball and Chris Klieman the last two head coaches there that won national championships you know in bison country it's about national championships or bust on second and 13 Mays eludes the and now tucks it and goes up to 25 and the ball came out at the end Alessi ended up with it and Mays is down and that is not a good sign for Youngstown State he has been beat up really from an injury standpoint all season long Danan and bo Pelini is immediately asking for the training staff to come out it does not look good for Nathan Mays right now it doesn't look good at all it looked like he took an awkward slide there a lower leg injury we're not going to show it on air but hopefully not too serious but immediately the plague his leg got stuck in the surface they're bringing out the golf cart right now yoishotto Pollini immediately turned to the sideline and say bring the cart and so they continue to work on Nathan maze here in Youngstown by his elated 14 to nothing here in the first quarter [Music] you're looking at Nathan Mays the senior quarterback for Youngstown State as head coach Bo Pelini looking on as well as he gets loaded up onto the cart and he'll be taken off the field here in Youngstown Mays has had injuries throughout his career but he's a guy that Bo Pelini says is one of the tougher players that he's coached in Matt Entz called it tougher that nails earlier this week as well when he watched the film on Nathan Mayes leading up to this game and that's a kid that wants to be out there there's no doubt about that he has done some miraculous things just to get himself on the field at times this year yeah all throughout his career like you said battled injuries battled back and that Garner's so much respect and in warrens leadership or a leadership title for a program so a young man hopefully that injury is not too serious and we hope the best for everything now we have a young sophomore back out there gonna take over Joe Frank Kraft who has plenty of experience himself he gets reps with this first team a lot over the course of this season and he'll dump it off at the flat tulasi who's gonna cut it back up into the middle and the mouthpiece came flying out he gets a couple of yards traitor after sophomore usually it's in about the third series of the game for Youngstown State Bo Pelini has been trying to work him in open course of the season talking with Youngstown State score back coach Joe Gans before the game today likes joke breaker Hampton thinks he's young has a bright future here in this paint wood program so on fourth down the Penguins will punt it away this is DeSalvo 'he's kick in it is called for fair catch I got a piece of it as well as Trevor heit comes in and calls for the fair catch at the 38 so it's been a tough start to this game for Youngstown State you turn it over once you miss a chance at a turnover you're down at a 14 nothing hole now you've lost your quarterback and this is where you just talked about leadership that's where leadership comes in two on that sideline to keep your guys locked in and still very much in this game you're only down two scores right now but you need to defense to step up right here against this North Dakota State offense this is Kobe Johnson off the left side the freshman finding plenty of room across midfield and then bounced him out of bounds across the 45 up to the 43 we spoke so highly on the right side of the offensive line I gotta give some love to those guys on the left side number 75 Dillon wisdoms and also at the left guard Nash Jensen big bodies up front creating huge openings for the running attack for the Bison going back to your earlier point Lane the defense really has to step up you have a defensive minded head coach you have a very solid defense with a lot of athletes out there this is an opportunity where they have to make some that happened to help their often glance rolling out to the far side and he finds Phoenix prongs inside the 30 down to the 27 yard line sprawls the sophomore that has become a big weapon for North Dakota State this year offensively they like to run the football there's no secret what Matt Entz and his program wants to do Tyler roll now the offensive coordinator but they have some good receivers that they like to distribute the ball to as well Sproles and Watson being the two main ones one of the great things about this program is that they have guys that understand their roles and they have guys that that know or though I should say the quarterbacks and leaders know how to utilize those weapons you lost Arian chef rooms now in brookie playing for the Green Bay Packers and you have guys that fill in the gap and right there Sproles has been a guy that has continued to increase in targets again the quarterbacks understand where he's gonna be on the field and those guys are making plays they know exactly what they bring to the table every single time every single time they come to the battlefield and you get a good look at Matt Entz right now always coaching development such a big part of this North Dakota State coaching staff and program and how they've been able to stay on top for so long Lance looking to the near side this his Scrolls he turns it upfield and he steps out of Alves just shy of five DJ smalls over there to usher him out of bounds but the efficiency from Trey Lance were seeing it on display tonight so you have to get sleep motion you see the shift of the defense on an island out there on his own you see the defensive back DJ smalls one on one that's easy pickings for a guy like tre Lance they put the fullback in the i-formation Babbage goes in motion Lance escapes from read and then finds the endzone Josh Babbage Babbage the sophomore this third touchdown reception of the season and the Bison put their third touchdown on the board of the evening in the first quarter the Justice read we talked about his ability in the backfield could have had his tenth sack of the season but he's at 6-3 to 55 and trained Lance is not a small young man out there got to keep those legs churning and bring him down and he escapes and it makes a big play easy pickings right there in the end zone soaked roses kick is good and the Bison with a 21 to nothing advantage and it has been a tough start to this game for Youngstown State as Lance able to find his tight end Josh Babbage for his second touchdown pass of this contest and look at Reed comes off the edge he hasn't been his grass but Trey Lance is a dual threat guy he can get it done with his legs and that time he's able to extend the play yep excellent job right here when I talk about running your legs you see how justice Reed just dives at him tries to bring him down but trade Lance is a big boy he is listed at 63 to 21 so not to top too flimsy back there he's a guy that can run the ball he's tough he's able to escape right there but everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for Youngstown State in this contest so far with just in the first quarter when we talked about the running game for NDSU but Tyler roll the offensive coordinator he likes his tight ends and sc8 touchdown reception for a tight end this year for the Bison well the bodies that have a one-two punch we talked about it in the backfield but also at that tight end position Ben Ellefson the career leader and type touchdowns as a tight end for the Bison Youngstown State on the return this is London Pearson and they'll bring it out to the 30 yard line just shy of the 30 and Youngstown State try to get something going offensively here now you have a new quarterback and Joe Craig craft calling the signals and if you're both aleni what are you trying to get accomplished here with your offense want you want to sustain some sort of a drive to keep your defense off the field for a little bit well you have a couple of things you'd like to do in this Drive the wind is blowing from the backs of the Penguins so I would not be surprised if they don't try to take a chance down field here Jeremiah as well is met and dropped a big hit by Marquis bridges one of the captains of his bison squad and he was right there to greet Braswell immediately they are tough all 11 guys all the defensive side make plays and tackle as you can see the corner coming up not afraid to lower the boom on the wide receiver give some credit to Jeremiah broswell securing that catch pretty good awareness from bridges is well he led with the shoulder instead of going in there with the helmet when he had a chance to put on the offensive line doing a nice job creating just enough of a crease for a lessee to get through and that'll be the end of the first quarter Youngstown State trying to sustain a drive get some points on the board the first quarter belonged to North Dakota State they turned a turnover into seven a couple of more scoring drives for North Dakota State and the number one team in the country looking every bit the part early on here at Youngstown Ohio North Dakota State leading Youngstown State 21 nothing to start the second quarter for bison head coach Matt Entz it has been a memorable first 10 months on the job as head coach his first month he won an FCS national championship in Frisco then in March he went with the team to the white house to be recognized by president over the summer he threw out the first pitch of the Minnesota Twins game followed up by the Bisons opener against Butler at the major league ballpark so far he's eight I know as a rookie head coach and keep in mind his mentor former NDSU head coach Chris Klieman started 19o in his first season something ends can match tonight with a win Thank You Kelly Matt ANSYS certainly had a whirlwind and I think in some ways for him running out of the tunnel at Target Field was the first sense of normalcy he probably felt as the head coach at NDSU with all the things that had to get accomplished right away you have to put a staff together you got to hold that recruiting class together which wasn't probably when your NDSU but it's all the same now you're selling your vision as the head coach which is remember the old head coach that's my vision too you just want to keep it going but plenty on the schedule and I bet when it got to that first game at Target Field against Butler he was actually maybe for the first time I'm able to take a deep breath yeah every coach feels relief when they get on the field you talk about the grind of a coach you hear all the stories of guys sleeping in their offices and especially on the college level because not only are you dealing with you are the main person in pro football you have a GM that's dealing with free agents of draft and newcomers to the team and college football it's you you have to go out and your assistant coaches have to go out and churn on the street for who's going to replace your seniors twenty four seniors left along with a great coach and you had to continue to keep the same momentum the same mindset and winning mentality and get new bodies in it I'll tell you what Mad Ants has done an outstanding job in his role in this short period third and seven for the Penguins here's craig craft looks to the sideline the sophomore in for the injured Nate Mays who went down with an injury in the first quarter Craig craft looking to the middle he had his man Braswell but he dropped it the throw might have been a touch behind Braswell but brass was still wishing he came up with that one it would have been enough for the first down and then some instead Youngstown State will have to punt down 21 nothing tough catch to be had but it touches your hands it should be caught Roswell has good enough hands and he's frustrated more in himself than that throw right there that could have been a key get to continue to get this drive going and now they have to punt the ball back to this dangerous buys a team-high is back deep to return the punt from Nick DeSalvo the redshirt freshman and the punt hits just in front of the 20 hike picks it up at the 13 and now he's got a seam he's across the 30 breaks a tackle and the 31 and then across the 35 yard line for Trevor heit so able to take something and turn it into a nice return and NDSU will have good field position to start up this Drive up 21 to nothing here in the second quarter [Music] number one North Dakota State with a 21 nothing lead over Youngstown State here in the second quarter in Youngstown and the Bison take over in their own territory and on first down some hard running between the tackles by Adam Cole field for North Dakota State and the Bison always have a good stable of running backs in there's no exception to that rule this year Danan Cofield big physical back type Brooks a lot of experience and he has put up some good numbers this year it's never really about one guy in that backfield you're exactly right and Koch field is a great story came in as a freshman had some carries but was relegated a lot to special teams at a knee injury and wind up bouncing back and really becoming a staple of this running back attack over the last year and a half so you're crazy for him give a lot of credit to the training staff in that young man back that brings up a big third down for this Youngstown State defense third and five chance to get off the field and stop North Dakota State they forced a three and out on the opening possession of the game but the Bisons offense has had its way ever since see man-to-man coverage again a spy on the quarterback and an excellent push up front on the offensive line that strength the right side Zach Johnson Kordell volson now is Dimitri Williams on the carry for the Bison he is shy of the first down it brings up fourth and short and it's decision time for Mad Ants and doesn't look like much of a decision for him looks like he's putting the punt team out on the field this is a smart decision you have the wind at your back so you may have an opportunity to back the ball up near the goal line put the Penguins in a very very tough situation really no need to go for it here unless you opt to fake on this punt opportunity the Wagner punt is a high spiraling kick and it's going to bounce it to four and go on into the end zone for the touch pad so the Youngstown State defense holds and that has to be a confidence boost they're getting the big stop now you get the offense a chance to maybe settle into this game everything's happened so fast in this contest it's been tough for the Penguins to settle into this game at all it's about the small victories within this game and you're right Lane getting that three and out getting the ball back pretty quickly giving the offense an opportunity for something positive to happen right now if you're Bo Pelini you're talking to your offense they just get us one touchdown let's have something positive that we can build on in this first half next thing you know a bat could move into - now you're just within a one score game Craig craft looks over to the sideline [Music] and he's getting this signal and now timeout is called by Youngstown State as they want to talk this one over and likely communication issues gonna happen once in a while when you have a new quarterback in there and Perry craft wants to make sure they have the right call and they have this one figured out Bo Pelini and his offensive staff a little different look this year to remember Shayne Montgomery was the offensive coordinator a couple of years ago when Youngstown State went to the FCS national championship and then he was off to the FBS for a year then he now is back at James Madison as the offensive coordinator at Bo Pelini elevates Brian Chris to offensive coordinator but Karl Polanyi is back this year both Bellinis brother and Karl Polanyi see him there in the picture is a longtime defensive coordinator but he is heavily involved in the offense this year and he is really enjoying this role telling me before the game that this is something he's always wanted to do and it's been very fun to get on the offensive side as Craig craft looking over the Meli's got his man that's Suren and Saran with enough to move the chains and then some for Youngstown State but a flag also on the plane may be holding in the trenches actually a illegal player downfield as Matt Jones the center of the transfer from West Virginia saw Brown initially signal to North Dakota State and then quickly correct well this is a run pass option you can actually see number 55 right there he's almost near the wide receiver about the 50 yard line when the ball was released you got to appreciate the effort but that's one of the the nuances in regards to a run past the offensive linemen don't know what's happening behind them they're looking just to attack tre craft under pressure now and he is flushed and has to try to just get what he can up the middle is jibreel Cox one of the fine defensive players and all of FCS football comes up with a stop but you can an award list young man right there he's on that list for a reason because he makes those types of plays and then that last plant was actually a designed quarterback draw had blockers downfield just could not get to the second level and now we're standing in a second and fourteen trade crap goes under center here fakes a handoff rolls to the near side has a man open that's Kendrick Mallory did he make the catch though he did Knox was unable to keep that foot inbounds he is pleading his case that he felt he did Kendrick Mallory look like he did all he could to try to come up with that catch well this is a tight lane you could see the safety right there whoo I think he has an argument right there I didn't see any foot go out of bounds before he secured that catch you see the frustration on that young man's face right there and as a former wide receiver you're taught to know exactly where you are on the field at all times and where you are in conjunction to the boundary a tough throw there but I think he has a strong argument so now third and 14 Craig Kraft letting it fly down the far sideline and it'll fall incomplete double coverage down the far sideline under through Saran just a little bit and Youngstown State will have to punt look like sir did not see the ball as it came out of the hands of the quarterback and surprisingly was open down the sideline if he had an opportunity to focus on the ball that might have been a huge play definitely would have got the first down for the twins so some missed opportunities on that drive for Youngstown State Malory thought maybe he had the first down then there was the catch that came back because Matt Jones was down the field too far Hite takes the punt and the bicycle up great field position to start up this Drive at the penguin 41 yard line North Dakota State with good field position and a three touchdown lead 1033 remaining in the second quarter the Bison have controlled this one so far [Music] 21-nothing North Dakota State the number one team in the country winners of 29 in a row and they open up this drive it there Oh 41 yard line of the Penguins and here is ty Brooks and time Brooks who's going to get it all the way inside the 5 yard 10 yard line down to the 7 before he is tripped up and a big burst play by the running back out of Fargo well outstanding job being a blocking right up front you see a great lead block by the fullback and a couple of broken tackles Todd Brooks came into this game averaging seven point four yards per carry he's a guy that can get the yardage into chunks and right there he accomplishes it first and goal four of these seven for North Dakota State Lance under center hands it off to the freshman Johnson and Johnson is hit hard maybe got a yard on the play as Cal head Judas came up from the safety spot to make a big tackle so impressed with this defense I know they got their backs against the wall just a bit right here in this game but if you look over the course of this season what this defense is done the plays that are made how evenly distributed the play making is on this defense if you're Bo Pelini you're proud but this is a tall tall task to play against the number one team in the country Lance pulls it back throws into the back court of the end zone and Babbage with his second touchdown of the night good execution from Lance on the fake and then he threw to that back corner for Josh Babbage and another touchdown for a Bison tight end well this is a great execution of the play but it's even to find the defense of that play they were not fooled on defense the Penguins are right there you can see the fake quarterback draw step back and a fade route on the outside everybody's covered every gap is covered really no place for trade Lance to run if he was gonna opt to run it and perfect coverage here just a great play by Babbage for his touchdown a 41-yard drive-by North Dakota State as art Brown announcing to the crowd that they're going to put this one under review to make sure that Babbage indeed completed that catch so our Brown will put the headsets on and take a look at this one Dana it looked like there was a little bit of tug-of-war in the back of the endzone it was great execution again from plants of the the fake draw he sold it well and as you said good defensive positioning from Youngstown states right here DJ smalls it doesn't look like he lost possession of that ball at any time that's a mismatch on the outside DJ smalls against the big tight end I wouldn't think this should take very long this looks pretty simple I don't think there's anything there that would lead you to believe this would be overturned I think this is going to stand there's six more on the board for the Bison in fact it will be confirmed most likely and we will hear from art Brown now interesting that it stands but it's a touchdown and counts for six all the same and so the Bison up 27 to nothing well I think one of the questions on that catch was whether there was any kind of bobble as the bodies continue to fall out of bounds so you know you have the defensive back out of bounds if that ball was juggling juggled then you may have an opportunity but that's an outstanding job by Babbage with strong hands to secure that catch Hendrix had them lined up in an offensive set now they'll go back for the p80 from Griffin crosa and Krause who makes it 28 to nothing so the freshman bangs that one through the uprights and North Dakota State enjoying a healthy lead with 917 still to play in the first half a couple of short fields for North Dakota State they've turned those two into 14 points a couple of big drives from them as well and they are enjoying a healthy lead here in Youngstown three plays 41 yards 6 yard touchdown pass but the brooks run was really the highlight of that drive yeah this is such a sound team offense defense special teams each phase making plays in this first half 28 points put on the board a couple of mistakes by the Penguins opens the door for this huge lead but you cannot give enough credit to Matt ends of his staff that young man right there train lands now he is leading this offense of the defense stepping up to the task as well this is a fun team to watch has been for several years Lance's father of course played in the CFL he's having one of the great freshman seasons you'll see in FCS football and hard to come in and replace Easton stick who replaced Carson Wentz as a flag comes out on the return who replaced Brock Jensen I mean it just keeps going on and all over that list for North Dakota State but you're placed back-to-back guys that are in the NFL and yet tre Lance is having as good a freshman season as any bison has ever had well you know what he's gonna be around this program for another couple of years and they have to be very happy with his production return team number 88 so hold against Youngstown State and they will start again backed up in their own territory and the field position game has been a tough one for the Penguins as well when you're trying to beat North Dakota State take care of the football create a turnover to yourself and you gotta win it special teams and will that win that field position battling that also not going Youngstown State's way here in the second quarter you're exactly right there's only but so much you can afford to to do against this type of team such a sound team so far in this game the Penguins haven't really been able to do much positive or string together a bunch of positives to get some sort of momentum on their side of the field I mean after those first couple of drives and a mistake on special teams you can see how deflating that sideline has been since early in the first quarter second and five here after the five yard run by Alessi they put grass well in motion and craft keeps himself around the left side makes it a Fender miss and that steps out of bounds up to the 12 yard line [Music] Joe Craig collects a 17-yard line let me correct myself there gained a to joke reycraft we've seen he his ability to be very athletic in and out of the pocket look at his numbers when he came into this game responsible for four touchdowns no interceptions so he knows how to take care of the ball make smart decisions just a sophomore out there you talk about getting thrown to the wolves this has really thrown to the Wolves playing against the number one team in the country and one of the top defenses malory goes in motion for the Penguins great craft has to get it out quickly finds miles Joyner up across the 20 ending up for the first down so a third down conversion for Youngstown State and this is a tight end that the Youngstown State stamp feels really good about is a guy that has a chance to play beyond college well two guys between the quarterback and Joyner six-foot for 255 sophomore have a couple of years together to kind of build that cohesion there's nothing more important than to have that kind of relationship with another wide receiver or tight end he's very athletic a big guy as well knows how to run crisp routes first and ten from the 24 alas II found a little bit of Running Room across the 25 and up to the 26 he gains two and it brings up second and eight for Youngstown State this Drive is very important obviously you want to cap it off with a touchdown but more importantly or I should say just as importantly you want to keep your defense on the sidelines for a long they've had a lot of pressure put on them haven't had much go well for them defensively if you can take up pretty much the rest of this clock before halftime get seven points on the board go into halftime with some momentum and get the football here's Craig Kraft on the zone rate keeps it himself and it'll bring up a third and manageable here for the Penguins one thing that Carl Fellini said he wants to see from this offense is physicality a little bit more balanced in that running game and if you look at their wins over the course of this season in those men's they've had good balance it's been a physical running attack some play action off of it but there has been more balance than maybe the last couple of years with Youngstown State offensively trying to get that running game going here choose some clock and sustain a drive pre-camp craft will keep it himself and he is near first down yardage see where this spot ends up doesn't look like you got a great spot looks like it's only gonna get to the 33 and that'll come up short a little short of that first down and seemed like there was some miscommunication in the backfield craig craft was looking for some sort of play action between he and Alesi unless he opted to go quickly to the line of scrimmage and block logan mccormick the left defensive end craig craft just tucked the ball in and ran hope for the best came up about a yard short so DeSalvo will punt it away from his own 19 yard line height awaiting the punt he stands at his own 31 and DeSalvo spun is not a good one it goes out of bounds and we'll see where they end up marking this one out as they continue to march forward and continuing to march forward and we'll see exactly where North Dakota State will begin this Drive it looks like the 44 43 yard line of Youngstown State that is where the Bison will inherit another very short field for their next drive they lead at 28 to nothing it's been all bison in the first half 28-nothing North Dakota State another short field to begin this Drive and not much doing on first down for the Bison as Cody Johnson will lose yards on first down he will lose too and it brings up second and 12 for NDSU justice Reed breaking through and making that stop and we've talked so much about North Dakota State but justice read the Florida transferred Aenon he is a good looking kid off that edge and he is just a junior but he is a special kind of talent absolutely a playmaker athletic you see a good run play up the middle working between the tackles the Bison do it as well as anyone in the country and he wants those big bodies up front watch how the Ahmanson line next work play watch how they push off the ball very rarely do you see a red helmet in the backfield of the back see push a prop big bodies seeing a lot of Kobe Johnson right now for North Dakota State he did not get in the game last week in at 2317 win over South Dakota State last week in Brookings Lance plenty of time and he finds Phoenix Rose turns it upfield gets a block for Williams he's up the sideline at the 10 bounces off a defender stretches out and they're going to say he went out of bounds at about the 5-yard line what an effort from Phoenix rolls we talked about how many targets he's gone or this season and this is the reason why because he creates separation easier throws for the quarterback and then extremely dangerous after the catch and the wide receiver at the bottom of the screen turning into a blocker immediately is phenomenal that's just the mindset to have from Demetri Williams came out of the backfield gets a key block now they have the ball inside the 10 yard line that's a big play 33 yard pass play for the Bison deep handoff to Demetri Williams and he spins across the 5 and then he is stood up from there and it rings up second and goal for the Bison that's how you reward a guy that gives you extra effort especially if he's running back getting the ball the next play see if he can get into pay dirt may see him get a healthy dose just because of that block downfield that's about a culture that's about a mindset when guys don't get the ball but they become that kind of a factor in a big play so second and call ball rest Center for deep handoff again to Williams and Williams this time will drive his legs across the goal line and into the end zone and the Bison pouring it on here in the first half a four yard touchdown run by Demetri Williams his second touchdown of his season and North Dakota State doing what it wants right now it starts up front Carson shootin Zach Johnson those guys right in the middle Nash Jensen they are the key factors in this run game nice run by Demetri Williams the big boys up front getting it done you couldn't script a better first half for Mad Ants and his coaching staff after the hard-fought victory last week against South Dakota State they have come out and they are hitting on all cylinders here tonight and they leave the Penguins 35 to nothing with 235 remaining here in the first half and they have to feel really good about their performance here so far tonight everything is working well for them offense defense special teams really nothing to complain about I'm sure Mad Ants and his staff will figure out something as they go into halftime to make adjustments on but from my vantage point there's not a whole lot going wrong for the Bison in this game good push up front by the offensive line when they need to get the job done in the red zone in the run game they're getting it done when they want to throw their complete passes protecting the ball five play 43 yard drive to 35 your time of possession and five touchdown drives tonight for NDSU Dane and three of those have started in positive territory for the Bison that's a big part of the storyline here the first half absolutely right game of field position and a team to this caliber make them go 80 90 yards whenever possible giving him a short field just makes it easy mrs. London Pierce it on the return for Youngstown State he's got a seam he's across the 35 Pearson into bison territory and all the way down inside the 35 to the 33 the first bit of excitement we've seen pretty much as it's kickoff for the Penguins if this outstanding return right here you can see sets it up place that right foot gets north and south a little elusive sloppy tackling and effort by the Bison now I love how he finishes it violent on the sidelines like a big running back we're talking about positive territory to begin a drive for NDSU well this time it's Youngstown State and they're trying to go into the locker room with a little bit of a positive attitude with 2:23 to play in the first half Craig crap letting it fly down the sideline Braswell jump ball couldn't come up with it flying in there was Hendrix through safety to help break it up and it falls incomplete on first down dangerous throw here took a lot of time to develop and the free safety James Hendricks you can see he's spying at the entire time that's actually a good job eyebrows well basically becoming a defensive back making sure that that was not going to be an interception you know a little something about that you need to do that once in a while absolutely and that's one of the things you're taught as a wide receiver do not allow the defensive back to intercept the pass even if you have to get a penalty craig craft will keep it himself and he's across the 30 down to the 29 yard line on second down and makes it a little bit more manageable here on third down but still third it long and misses for down situation right here so I would not be surprised if on this play they ought to run the ball create fourth and shorter if they don't get the first down because if you don't if you throw the ball here and it's incomplete or you get a sack now you're in a fourth and 10 trying to kick into the wind where a field goal will really really not help you in this situation krei craft a little bit of pressure sets up the screen in the middle the field to the tight-end jointer and joiners near first down yardage and it looks like he has enough as a bison helmet flies off in the process of making the tackle but again miles joiners starting to get a little bit more involved offensively for Youngstown State and it's been beneficial Josh Hayes is the Bison that lost his helmet so he has to come off the field yeah this is basically like a runt play this is a tight end middle screen at the line of scrimmage excellent job by Joyner getting his shoulders downhill and getting that first down but it's a safe throw easy completion let your athlete be an athlete and sniff out that first down marker second catch of the night for miles Joyner minute ten and Counting here in the second quarter for Youngstown State Craig craft was going to keep it himself and then he is met immediately and dropped as Aaron murk Adel comes in and handles Craig craft right the line of scrimmage and a timeouts gonna have to be called by Bo Pelini and Youngstown State with a minute to remaining in the first half important for them that they can find a way to come away with points preferably a touchdown trailing 35 to nothing and just feel a little bit better about things going into the locker room it's not been a first half that Youngstown State will be happy with yes you're playing the number one team in the country but they feel like they have enough talent to play with this bison squad but the things that can't go wrong have gone wrong in the first app for them but if they could end it on an uptick it would certainly give them a little bit of momentum heading into the second half at least well regardless of what happens in this Drive you're right if they get a touchdown that's great I'm positive to end it but if you're both Bellini when you get into the locker room you're talking to your players about basically everything that could go wrong has gone wrong we lost our quarterback we had a couple of turnovers and we're down these many points let's go fight krei craft out of the shotgun here comes pressure he steps up throws it back into the end zone in the back of the end zone and Youngstown State is on the school board the sophomore makes his third touchdown reception of a year and credit Cray Kraft with a nice throw with pressure bearing down on him he was still able to step into the throw knowing he might take a shot and he delivered a strike to Joyner who went up and got it little out and up one on one coverage with a bracket from the safety Michael tuxie and he's able to come down with the play as a tight end as a wide receiver you just want a chance out there and he makes the best of it the p80 is through the uprights in it's 35 7 and youngstown state puts together a scoring drive when they needed one very badly here in this first half and they did a lot of it by getting number 80 right there involved Myles Joyner he is a special young tight end for this paint whant office he said just a sophomore but he's shown it he could be a playmaker out there on the field now if you're the Penguins you don't want anything big to happen against you with 55 seconds left we've seen a couple of big runs a big touchdown pass from trade Lance they'll probably start with the run attack against the Penguins defense depending on where this kickoff lands but if you can get a strip through the Penguins you might be able to get back in this game because they'll get the ball after halftime short field after the big return from London Pearson we should certainly point that out that set it all up for Youngstown State a five play 33 yard drive 23 yard touchdown pass to Myles joiner to cap it off for Youngstown State Joyner was on the all Missouri Valley Football Conference freshman team a year ago newcomer team I should say to be more specific and he is showing why here tonight here's Kobe Johnson on the kickoff return looks like he's got a pretty big lane he's across the 35 40 he's at midfield look out Tommy Johnson the freshman from Georgia goes the distance and just like that NDSU answers punch counter punch like a heavyweight boxing match get a little knockdown get a little knock woozy shake it off quickly and come back with a big-time play outstanding blocking on the kickoff return unit and the speed displayed there by Colby Johnson five foot nine 177 pounds well Scott bag got it done these NDSU running backs come to Fargo sometimes they bide their time for a few years before they're one of the guys but they get a lot of opportunities anyway because North Dakota State is on top in so many games and it's just a great way to develop great running back after great running back and the Bison look like they've got a really good one in this freshman Kobe Johnson that time on the kickoff return and North Dakota State up big here in the first down 42 to 7 and after the offense had done such a good job and special teams for Youngstown State on the kickoff return to get them in position to get on the board the one thing you didn't want to have happen happens and that sandy issue comes right back with the kickoff return themselves to put points and answer Youngstown State saw the frustration on the face of BOE Pollini on the sidelines just when you thought you had some momentum something positive 13 seconds later you have another score against you and you may go into halftime down 42 to 7 it was tough sledding offensively last week for NDSU against that really good South Dakota State program very good defense on the road rivalry and the Bison offensively had struggle a little bit a couple weeks prior to that against Missouri State as well and so to put up a big number in the first half against a good Youngstown State defense is something that the Bison have to feel really good about right now here is the kickoff and another pretty good return from Youngstown State this time out to the 30-yard line for Christian Turner and Youngstown State with 36 seconds to go in the first half trailing 42 to 7 will send the offense back onto the field this situation you wonder what the game plan is you know you're in for a battle gonna be tough to hold down this buys an offense in the second half so gotta be calculated and how you attack this defense right here with just one timeout 36 seconds Alesi the running back up the far side and he is brought down at the 39 yard line clock will run of 28 seconds in counting in this first half and Youngstown State looking for the sideline will they run another play Alessi now hobbling a little bit over on the far sideline that's not a good sign for Youngstown State it looks like the Penguins are going to be ok with going into the locker room here as the clock continues to run and they will walk off the field here and that will be the end of the first half all NDSU in this first half 42 to 7 a kickoff return three short fields turned into touchdowns as well and the Bison doing what they've done to so many over the years getting out early and then pouring it on as the first half went along North Dakota State has won 29 in a row and they look well on their way right now towards reaching number 30 here tonight with a 42 to 7 lead as you see the Penguins heading in to the locker room or Kelly Burke will be catching up in just a few moments with NDSU head coach Matt Hanson let's send it down to her now coach you said you wanted a fast start how have you been able to exploit the big play early and often well I think you know our staff did a great job of putting together a game plan we had some things happen for us on special teams that created some field position and we've had some big plays of our own you know I'm just doing a nice job of getting trays do a nice job of getting into the open receiver and we're making the run game work for us so we got to come back out in the next half and execute in the same level how's your defense had to adjust to the slight differences that way is you backup quarterback Joe Craig Ross Springs well you see a little bit more quarterback run game right now a little bit more 12th personnel than maybe what we had anticipated coming into the ballgame but you know they continue to make adjustments I wasn't real happy with the touchdown that we gave up there about 40 seconds left young man should have been double covered and so well getting in the locker room and get that corrected here at halftime thanks coach all right Thank You Kelly 42 to 7 North Dakota stay that's a happy head coach even though he he's a coach so he can always find something that he wants to work on in the locker room at halftime bison up big [Music] welcome back to halftime in the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week and we're joined by North Dakota State athletic director Matt Larson thank you so much for joining us of course your season started off with so much excitement at Target Field 35,000 bison fans made their way to the Twin Cities to watch NDSU open up the season what an incredible thing a lot goes into the planning process of a game like that it really was and a lot of credit goes to Dave st. Peter and the twins staff they've been incredibly gracious from from day one and this has been in the making for about four or five years and but what a testament to buys a nation to come out and from all over all over the country but certainly in our backyard there and to and to show out really well and what a great opportunity for our guys a lot of Minneapolis Minnesota kids on our roster so a great experience for them a lot of planning goes into that as we said it's almost like getting ready for a ball game or something along those lines with all the different things logistically you have to put in place to pull a game like that off you weren't surprised though by the fan turnout right I mean that's what bison nation has been all about no not at all our fan base is incredible and you know pound for pound I we said I'd put him up against any fan base in the country and and they really did I mean they they've been so supportive of everything we've done but to show out the way they did at Target Field and what a great experience what a great backdrop it was for the start of our season and so so thankful for our fan base and all that they do for us Matt there's a big drive right now for increasing scholarship endowments overall just take me through what that is and what you're trying to get accomplished right now from that standpoint yeah so we just announced a a capital campaign at North Dakota State a couple weeks ago and and it's a four hundred million dollar goal which is by far the largest in the state of North Dakota and definitely the largest at North Dakota State and a big component for athletics is capital projects but also scholarship endowments we have a team acres organization that raises upwards of six million dollars a year to support scholarships so the more we can build our and down went up takes the pressure off of that Annual Giving and so that's a big push that we're gonna make as we enter this capital campaign and then and reach out to our donors and of course the indoor facility has been on the top of your mind for a while now and then starting to put that into place it really is it's a it's a 32 million dollar facility every Penny's gonna be privately raised but something that we desperately need in Fargo and not just for football but for all of our outdoor sports to be able to train some of the harsh winter conditions that we get but then also to train all year round and in whatever Mother Nature throws at us so hopefully we'll get the funding in place and build a break ground sometime this year Matt thanks so much appreciate lling Matt Larsen and with Dakota State athletic director with us here on the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week here at halftime Blaine griddle with you back here at halftime of the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week here in Youngstown we were joined by Youngstown State athletic director Ron stroll Oh Ron thanks for joining us we appreciate it it's exciting time right now on your campus and one of the exciting things is all the new additions a couple of new sports coming along men's swimming just added right know we're excited you know we hadn't been swimming back in the late 70s and early 80s and you know to be able to bring them back we've had women swimming we just will only school in the conference that didn't have men's swimming so we were able to bring them back and they're actually competing this year so we hired a coach in the spring and told him we needed a team in the fall and he was able to accomplish that good luck with that right women's lacrosse is gonna be at it as well you've announced that and I know there's recruits on campus I know it's really exciting time I mean just today I met with the 21 commitments that we have that we'll be signing and and they're getting to meet each other for the first time on the tailgate lot right there right right now today and the parents and they're trying to figure out roommates and all that other stuff so it's been fun getting that started and getting some facilities ready for them to start competing next year next school season what goes into launching new programs exploratory phases and everything else you try to do some research and see you know what's viable and you know we added women's bowling I believe three or four years ago and you know we want to continue to try to expand and you know it helps our University attract kids from outside of our geographic region so you know swimming made a lot of sense because we already had a pool and we already had coaches so we're able to bring you know with an addition of a coach and a trainer were able to bring them on and in La Crosse was a sport that we've been talking about for a long time so for gender equity purposes and a lot of other reasons we're able to bring that on board too so you know with that we'll have 500 student-athletes on our campus this coming fall and that'll make us with 21 sports the second-largest athletic department in the state of Ohio and we're doing this interview from inside the Don cast a teeny multimedia Center which is a new addition to stand Boss Stadium this year and what a gem it is it's it's it's been wonderful to have it's probably been three or four years in the making and you know before over here we put you guys in a poor little shed and hopefully you enjoy the nice facility over here and then it obviously allowed us to expand on the west side with some lodges and other sweets help us generate some revenue Oh Ron we appreciate it thank you so much thank you I appreciate it Ron sir although the athletic director here at Youngstown State with us here at halftime of the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week 42 to 7 or third koto state leading Youngstown State here at halftime at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown Ohio spoon all byes in early and often in this contest and the Penguins will try to get something going a little bit in the second half to make this more of a contest here's the rest of your MB FC scoreboard big win for Northern Iowa today on the road against Illinois State and Western Illinois gets the come-from-behind victory against South Dakota to get their first win of the year Dana yeah it's a great job and this team has been down all season long so having something positive like that especially in that way coming from behind very good for the boys in McCall southern Illinois continuing to play very good football right now they have been hot and they get another win over Indiana State 23 to 14 putting themselves kind of in that playoff picture a little bit well we've become accustomed to seeing five possibly six teams from the Missouri Valley Football Conference always be in line to make that postseason run and southern Illinois has done a fine job and South Dakota State taking care of business at Missouri State let's go down on the field Kelley birch standing by with Bo Pelini [Music] [Applause] so Kelly Burke is talking with Bo Pelini right now down to the satellite we'll get a report from her on exactly what he had to say about this first half that went the way of North Dakota State winning 42 to 7 right now here at halftime 42 to 7 North Dakota State out in front of Youngstown State at halftime just getting ready for the start of the second half here at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown Ohio and let's take a look at the highlights of this first half it was North Dakota State early it was North Dakota State often and trail ants really doing it with his legs and his arm in the first half Dana well we knew coming into this game about the versatility that trade Lance brought to the table outstanding arm strength running ability good strong runner great decision-making in the pocket and just pick the part the Penguins defense throughout this first half couple of touchdown passes to the backup tight end Babbage and that's been a theme over the course of this year for NDSU finding those tight ends in the end zone Demetri Williams at the hard-fought touchdown run and then another tight end this time for Youngstown State Miles Joyner getting in on the action and in the ensuing kickoff Kobe Johnson going the distance and taking it to the house and what looked like for Youngstown State going into the locker room was not that as the Bison answered immediately it's now time to see who stats went right sponsored by State Farm here to help life go right and obviously it was all NDSU 276 total yards 305 on third down as well and they did a good number on that Youngstown State offense playing without their starting quarterback now at Nathan maze yeah Nathan maze went down in that first quarter but you can see the number that pops out to me Lane is the hundred and one that's total offense for Youngstown State that is not a recipe for success against such a great team in the bison as we get ready to start the second app let's send it down to Kelly Burke on the sidelines who had a chance to catch up with Bo Pelini I did have a chance to catch up with Youngstown State head coach Bo Pelini and asked him about his backup quarterback Jack reycraft he said he thought he did some good things but he needs help from some of the other skill guys around him as for the big plays on defense he said we've been in position we just have to make the plays and tackle all right Thank You Kelly it'll be Youngstown State football to start this second half and at this point for Youngstown State this is a team that has had they had a great start to the season they had that three-game losing streak they went over Western Illinois last week and now you're trying to finish the season strong of your Youngstown State this one not going your way but still plenty left over the course of this year for Youngstown State on the schedule and so the Penguins still have some opportunity in front of them with a winning record right now as we have an injury on the kickoff return that looks like it's potentially Kendrick Mallory or it could be Suren down right now for Youngstown State yes Lane you're talking about what Bo Pelini and his Youngstown State Penguins can do the rest of this season if I know Bo and Bo actually his first coaching job was again for me as a receiver coach at the University of Iowa so I literally played against him when he was a defensive back a great defensive back for the Buckeyes from Ohio State two months later he was my wide receiver coach I fought him on the field and then I couldn't fight him in the meeting room but he is an intense guy and I'm if I know him the main message that he went into halftime with his team was let me see your fight is that you know who knows how the scoreboard is gonna unfold but let me see what kind of fight you're gonna have in this game and he will watch this second-half film probably in more depth than he'll watch the first half just for that reason as London Pearson I should correct myself the kick returner for Youngstown State he is up and walking off under his own power which is certainly a good sign the junior from here in Ohio and you're right that is Bo Pelini to a tee he is an intense guy but he wants to see guys compete that might be the most important thing to him that's something that he really wants to see continue to grow from a culture standpoint with his Youngstown state program and I'm with you I guarantee you he challenged his guys to see who wanted to compete in the second half against a really good football team at North Dakota State and that's what you hear in the locker room I've had coaches like bo in the past and you know you have guys leaders playmakers don't come out of this locker room unless you want to fight I won't have anything against you if you stay in but don't come out if you come out of here you that means you want to go to battle with me you want to fight on this field and that's got to be the mindset that resonates with this that entire program you see poke Malini's standing there on the sidelines he goes into every game with a plan and he knows that if his team can execute that plan at the level that they need to that they they have a chance even against North Dakota State he understands that he knows it was a big challenge this week but 18 to 22 year olds make mistakes once in a while and that has been the case here tonight for Youngstown State and NDSU the type of team that will make you pay for those mistakes as Mark Waid the freshman from right here in Ohio the really bright young player for this penguin squad he is more than likely in line to redshirt this year this will be one of his four games that he gets into but they think he has a really good future he was the Ohio High School Player of the Year last year oh this is a great opportunity for him to the game although you're gonna fight you don't know how the scoreboards gonna end but you can get some quality opportunities for college play against the number one team in the nation so to me this is a smart move to have the young quarterback come in design run plays shows athleticism and his speed and now you see a little bit of jolt of energy nice job of being patient by weight on that running play and he's up to midfield and Youngstown State trying to put together a scoring drive here with the young freshman at quarterback 11,000 plus passing yards the fourth most in Ohio high school history for Mark Waid this was a big recruiting gift for Bo Pelini and his staff Alessi the carrier big hole up the middle and lessee across the 45 had down to the 43 yard line look like Joe Alessi going gingerly off the field took a big hit here good lead run right here nice seal block by Josh Berg and the boom was lowered right there by Aaron Merc Adele does not look like Joe Alessi is himself on the sidelines oh he shot him limping a little bit at the end of the first half as well deep handoff to Chapman the running back and Chapman is able to push across the 40 nice hard run finishing that run very well for the sophomore that's what you want to see in your running back any ball carrier fall forward the great running backs of all time whether you're talking about Emmitt Smith or even go further back to Walter Payton them and some of the greats that are in now always fall forward that's that one extra yard that they get that tax on to their stats that moves the chains and so on it's a great technique you know one of the greatest of all time of that Marcus Allen was tremendous was Guinea in the hole never taking a big hit waged it all under thrown intended for Brazzaville down the near sideline and it rings up second and 10 but Marcus Allen didn't look like a short yardage back but probably one of the great short yardage backs in history because of what you just said get skinny in the hole always ended up going forward at the end of the play I was fortunate enough to play five years with Marcus in Kansas City and I don't think I ever saw him take a big hit never talked saw him take a square hit knew how to get his body in different alignments that he always only opened up one shoulder or one side of his body and like you said that's what made him a great short yardage goalie line running back Chapman is dropped for a loss and it'll bring up third and long here for Youngstown State but the Penguins coming out here in the second half and this is a better look offensively they look like a team that wants to stay involved in this game they look like they want to fight just like we were talking about absolutely and the way the defense is gone and how long they've been on the field I expect this to be for down territory so might not might not be surprised at it either a short pass or a run play now they got a free down here ballers on the dirt the flag comes out as the ball was on the turf it was a free play but Wade unable to handle the snap and so unable to take that shot that may be Youngstown State would have liked to have taken this is where the youth comes in for Wade because in this situation the center of Matt Jones he's snapping the ball he's snapping the ball based on his peripheral vision and seeing those guys come off offsides and the quarterback Wade is just not on the same page yet you can see right there he's snapping it because he sees out the right side he sees the defensive lineman number 91 Tusker coming off the edge knows he's got a free play but the quarterback is not on the right page so a growing opportunity for Wade Spencer way G flagged for the offsides for NDSU Wade fakes the handoff he's going to take it to the right side and then tosses out the flat to Ryan Evans the possession receiver for Youngstown State that's good enough to move the chains good job improvising Justin see the wide receiver gets just enough to get that first down I don't know where you are on the field just beyond the sticks first intend for Youngstown State this has been a good Drive to open up the second after the Penguins three receivers to the near side of the formation for Wade in the pocket flushed out of the pocket takes it and leans forward it's back to the line of scrimmage does Wade maybe gets a half yard at this NDSU defensive line they're coming ease into this situation they're gonna come out and they have a game plan in the red zone we're near the red zone they're gonna come out to the quarterback not gonna allow you to try to pick apart their defense but I'll get some pressure in your face second at nine here as Chapman just tosses that equipment out of the way rolling to the near side is Wade complete to Emmons and Emmons has it up for the first down and the play calling right now for Youngstown State they're doing a nice job making this very manageable for Mark Wade getting him out of the pocket giving him some easy reads and he is stepping up and making good throws yeah you're exactly right that's Jackson Hankey his responsibility at that linebacker position his only quarterback so he's not fooled by the zone read in the backfield sets his sights right on Wade will give credit to Wade he stays focused on his receiver and drops it done Chapman the running back and he dives across the 15 and he ends up down at the 13 yard line before the run is all said and done Chapman as we said earlier just a sophomore it's a good look and running back for Youngstown State 6-2 to 20 and gets a lot of leverage with that big body and it gets north-south in a hurry that's what it's about they got the two backs in the backfield right now Christian Turner who's been a solid playmaker for this program for several years here's Turner out in the flat and Turner pushed out of bounds just inside the 12 this is the type of drive that the Penguins needed to open up this second half take up a lot of clock they don't score in this play this this Drive could take up seven plus minutes which is great for the defense exactly what Bo Pelini wants in regards to guys that are going to go out there and fight and and just grind hey you see the score and you see 42 to 70 think boy the Youngstown State defense it's been a long night and that is true in some regards but Turner with the pitch and then is dropped up to ten that's true in some regards but three short fields a kickoff return and that explains a lot of the lopsided score it's been just as much the offense not being able to sustain drives for Youngstown State as it's been anything by the defense now you have a situation where fourth down you're down 42 to 7 you wonder okay why are they running in the field goal unit but it goes back to the point we talked about earlier having something positive in this game happen especially in this drug you sustained such a long drive at least get some points on the board it would be devastating for them to go for it on fourth down and not get the first down or touchdown Colt McFadden's kick is up and it is good and Youngstown State opens up this second half with a long drive and they come away with three points it's 42 to 10 North Dakota State out in front [Music] the Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week is sponsored by State Farm talk to agent today at 1-800 State Farm or by visiting statefarm.com today's game is also brought to you by on the run the official convenience store of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Danan Hughes and Lincoln along with Kelly Burke on the sidelines for us here tonight from Stambaugh stadium here in Youngstown Ohio it's been all North Dakota State but the Penguins able to get three on the board on their opening drive of the second half and here's Kobe Johnson on the kickoff return and that is blown up from the start as shooting in there for Youngstown State and making the tackle was grip at home so a nice play made there by the Penguins North Dakota State will have the ball and we come back [Music] the number one team in the country taking care of Youngstown State right now 753 remaining in the third quarter bison with their opening drive here of the second half trail ants out there at quarterback for NDSU and they'll keep it on the ground to start up this possession now it's pretty efficient first half offensively for NDSU Dana we talked about the short fields but you still have to take care of business and they mixed it up pretty well Lance in the first quarter really seemed to basically dial up whatever he wanted and the running game got going pretty well in that second quarter as well they had 27 total offensive plays in that first half 8 to 18 of them will run plays so like you said they are mixing it up extremely well and keeping the Youngstown State defense much off kilter that entire first half now they're opting to try to establish re-establish the run game in the second half right now creating the third short situation here's Johnson again on the carry it's been a fairly active night tonight for Kobe Johnson as he has five carries now and we told you earlier he did not play the game against South Dakota State that was a hard-fought game Matt had said that earlier this week really wasn't there was no injury or anything like that it was just to coach his decision they didn't feel like that was a matchup where he could excel but he's been a big part of the offense at other points over the course of the season and here he goes he is at midfield but he is near Colby Johnson 2010 pay dirt for the freshman Football Conference fans guess who you got a deal with for another three years Pete Johnson 76 yards for Kobe Johnson employees done it on the kickoff return he busts the long run there he is an exciting young player we've talked so much about Trey Lance being a freshman quarterback and what he brings the table these two guys are gonna be in the backfield together for three more years after this season yes just continuing to churn in bodies they moved 24 seniors off of the national champion team last year 14 seniors on this team but still a lot of playmakers like Johnson young talent that keeps this program going 49 to 10 North Dakota State flexing their muscles as the number one team in the country here tonight at Stambaugh Stadium and you know Tyler all takes over as offensive coordinator of course when Chris Klieman gets the Kansas State job he takes some of his staff with him to Manhattan not all of the staff but some of the staff so this is a new-look staff this year this is the first time all of these guys have coached together as one collective unit but one thing that's been nice for Tyler roll is he has a bunch of other former play callers on that offensive side of the football with him and when you have that you don't necessarily feel like you're on that Island like some offensive coordinators can feel you up guys you feel you can trust to bounce things off of game plan wise exactly and that's what it's about being a team being a unit not just on the field but in the meeting rooms in the staff meetings and and guys having the respect that their opinion matters and you have a coach that can bring it all together I played for one of the greatest college coaches in football history and Hayden Fry he was a great coach that knew had a coaches and that's kind of what we're seeing in this program with the Bison coaching your coaches to coach the players on the field instead of just being kind of a dictator that tries to control everything a lot of experience on this staff to have Randy Hedberg who forces a former head coach in Division two st. Cloud State and has had great success developing quarterbacks over the course of his career a great guy for Tyler role to lean on dan Larson as well has been an offensive play caller just a really good situation staff wise and that's a lot of credit to Matt Entz there because again he had to make this staff his own staff in a way right and so it wasn't as simple as just saying okay we're still going to go to state we're just going to keep doing what we're doing that was the goal but you have to find guys that fit get the guys into the right roles still there is a transition even if it was an in-house promotion of Mad Ants to head coach but that just goes to tell you the athletic department the athletic director what they've been able to account accomplish throughout several years in this program you have craig ball that's the port of it that's the quarterback and then head coach of the entire football program and you have a guy and chris climb and that's there he moves up the next guy moves up as well in matt ends you have a program that's not just producing great football on the field quality student athletes but a coaching tree within the family that's continued success throughout second and 15 here for Youngstown State for more on the Youngstown State injury situation let's go down to the satellites and Kelly Burke actually has returned to this for the game is now on crutches with his left ankle heavily wrapped the Penguins trainers will not confirm anything although we had heard several rumblings that he may have a dislocated ankle as for starting running back Joe Alessi he came off the field had blood behind his left ear and has been taken into the building to be examined further okay Thank You Kelly we will keep an eye on that situation you hope for the best for both obviously the Nathan vane situation it did not look good at the time and you hope that you can get the best possible lose there for the senior quarterback for Youngstown State meanwhile Mark Waid has been the quarterback here in the second half for the Penguins he just seemed maze there on the sidelines on those crutches sitting down here's the screen pass to Chapman and Chapman with seroma he's going to have it up for the first down as he gets it up across the 40 to the 41 yard line go back to the running back coming at it back just like a little bit of a leak in front of the second level of the defense and they get another first down nice job late handoff on a little draw to Chapman and he fights forward for about four yards on first down there's a good field of the game from Warren way did you talk about a basketball player and he's with Jim rat he's those guys that that understands the game and the float of the game and Mark Waid kind of has that field of him as a quarterback he feels like he has a a natural flow to his game it doesn't seem like the game is too big for oftentimes you have young talent out there especially going against a team like the Bison the eyes get wide flag on the play as Wade will take it himself and scramble and up for the first down but that flag looks like it's probably going to bring this one back as that was in the area where you would expect holding and Devin Robinson right now is already pleading his case which would tell you most likely this one going against the gwyn's well he knew it was gonna be questionable you can tell by his body language offense number seven this body language as that flag was coming out he was looking straight at the official watch at the end with this play right there they both look back flag comes out official right on top of it and it negates what was a pretty good scramble by Mark Wade that's something we've seen from him so far here in the second half he's very decisive with the football which is always a good trait from a young quarterback sometimes that comes later but looks like Wade very comfortable within his roll pressure coming and he is dropped in the backfield looked like Logan McCormick was the first to get there the redshirt sophomore out of Appleton Wisconsin to drop mark Wade and that'll bring up third and long the ball all the way back at the 27 yard line of Youngstown State they need to get across the 50 and into bison territory to the 49 so third and 24 here now timeout called by North Dakota State well you wonder about the timeout here why would the Bison call a timeout well this is a good timeout because you want to make sure that your defense understands the entire situation in this situation at third and 24 help them understand do not have a penalty do not go offsides and give them a free play note no questionable hints and to defend the back end so you may see a little bit of a unique defense setup oftentimes you'll see defenses especially in third and long situations extra long the second level will line up around the 45 yard line here maybe five or ten yards from the first down being that back layer hoping that the defensive front for or the Blitz that will go after the quarterback can get home before any receiver gets open but mainly you have guys that are on the same page you can see right there on a 40-yard line there's like a wall of defenders to make sure that everything that anybody that catches the pass catches it in front of it and Youngstown State can run the draw this is Christian Turner and Christian Turner will get some yardage back but Youngstown State will have to run the punt team on Matt Jones in miles Douglas a couple of offensive lineman for Youngstown State were well downfield trying to clear a path for Christian Turner Jones an interesting story West Virginia starting Center for 25 straight games - in his career at West Virginia playing for Dana Holgorsen had a year left as a grad transfer and called up Bo Pelini and said I want to come back home he's from the area and finishing his career here for Youngstown State as Trevor heit takes the fair catch of the Bison will start this drive from their own 26 yard line North Dakota State 49 of 10 over Youngstown State here today [Music] the bison looking like the number one team to the country here tonight 49 to 10 lead over Youngstown State this matchup is a matchup of two of the most prolific programs at FCS history a dynasty here that were witnessing firsthand at North Dakota State seven championships for North Dakota State and they've wanted seven out of the last eight years Youngstown State of course a dynasty in their own right especially the Jim Tressel years before he went to Ohio State seven appearances in the national championship themselves bo Pelini took this team to the national championship in 2016 his second year at the helm of this Youngstown State program he's in year five now and trying to get Youngstown State back there again at some point in the future but these are two Blue Bloods if you will of FCS football you're absolutely right in here at Stambaugh Stadium they have it proudly displayed up on the board the national champions the finalists and like you said there is a history here of really really strong football well pleased had a glimpse of it hoping to get them back into that face said Nolan into the game and he hits Babbage down the seam for a big game boy Josh Babbage has been involved in the offense here tonight absolute strike from great concentration Bob Babbage play-action in the backfield a good strong throw down the seed nice separation making it a little easier on Nolan to complete that pass just his second pass completed this year 28 yard passing catch between Nolan the Iowa State transfer and Josh Babbage Noland under center here out of the I formation gives to Dmitri Williams in Williams with a couple on first down Nolan's an interesting story told the eye state transfer he threw for 360 yards a couple of seasons ago against Oklahoma he got in a bunch of games played in nine games over his first two seasons at Iowa State this is a guy that has tons of experience what a luxury for NDSU to have as your backup quarterback you're absolutely right in he's definitely a guy that you want to have that second quarterback cuz anything can happen as we saw earlier in this game for Youngstown State you need that second guy they'll be able to come in especially for a program like the Bison and they not miss a beat on offense there's Adam Cole field on that carry for NDSU it's been what you would expect from the running game from NDSU they have really spread it around they have four backs that they like to give the lion's share of the carries to type runs Cofield we just saw you've seen a lot of Demetri Williams of course Cody Johnson who's been electric tonight as the final seconds of the third quarter will tick off the clock it's been all North Dakota State tonight they have mixed it up they have taken advantage of mistakes and they look like a team well on their way to a nine and OH record a quarter left to play here in the old Stefan [Music] [Applause] not a ton of cheer for tonight for Penguins fans as NDSU has had their way in this 149 to 10 bison out in front as you see DeMarco Craig who was just in on that stuff a Batam Cofield [Music] brings up fourth and short for North Dakota State head the offense will stay on the field for Mad Ants which in this situation it's a smart call you're kicking into the wind so from a football perspective there are some people that might think he's trying to run the score up that's not the case just get the first down or at least try to get the first down and give the defense an opportunity to stop him here's Cole field he gets to the 30 right near the first down marker it's gonna be enough for the first down for Adam Cole fuel to n NDSU and they would get a fresh set of downs NDSU over 400 yards of total offense through the third quarter to 12 on the ground 189 through the air so pretty balanced in that regard Kobe Johnson of course the big numbers on the ground just six carries but for a hundred and three yards of course when you have a 75 yard touchdown run that helps those numbers significantly last week we saw Cole field run 471 to seal the game so another big playmaker and here's Dimitri Williams showing off his speed as well all four running backs tonight for NDSU have been involved in Dimitri Williams 30-yard touchdown run off the right side and North Dakota State with 55 on the scoreboard here tonight so obviously as the Bison continuing this progress throughout this season is old now you're gonna have the the conversation which team is better now a long ways to go to get to the undefeated national champion status but I think they're right on in line for that we're in that discussion to be which national championship byzantine was better all-around and they got an argument this team is putting up some big numbers this season the beat goes on for North Dakota State they just continue to win 56 10 bison [Music] buyers would have come in to Youngstown tonight and had their way with their penguins data we talked a lot about the offensive production of the balance for North Dakota State the running game has been really good tonight and it's been explosive too I think that's the other thing this is an offense that has some big play capability we've sought a long touchdown strike the Christian wants it earlier in the game very early on in the contest and we've seen some big explosive running games get broke it off as well here tonight well you talk about the big explosive plays offensively it's mainly because of the big bodies up in front and let me read off on this roster Dylan Radin's 298 May at Nash Jensen 326 Sean egg the center the anchor 303 315 from the all-american Zach Johnson and 309 from volson the right tackle so big bodies up front that know how to move bodies create space and then when you have explosive running backs with the speed and the elusiveness of Williams and Brooks and Cole field and Johnson it's gonna make it tough on any opposing defense Braxton Chapman we've seen a lot of Braxton Chapman in the second half for Youngstown State told you about mark Wade getting into the contest at quarterback and with Joe Alessi being banged up a little bit it's been really the Braxton Chapman show that running that a little bit of Christian Turner sprinkled in there as well but he is a violent runner he finished that run with a lot of authority as well for a gain of six on first down and they really have had to lean on the running backs and the tight end Myles joiner to get some plays down the field we hadn't heard very much from Jeremiah Braswell although I receive her core especially you would think although you don't want to complicate things for your young quarterback in this situation you would think that they may take some chances downfield did the wide receivers involved but you're right I am very impressed with Chapman and what he's been able to do with his opportunity since Alessi went down moves that change again with a gain of four on second and four and it's been a lot behind the interior that offensive line with Douglas dude right guard Jones its center and Zinni of course the left guard Wade rolling out had a man open and overshot Torbert on the near sideline tried to squeeze it in there and just too tall for the senior wide receiver well the buys them do such a nice job when quarterbacks roll out of the pocket you see almost a wave of white jerseys and yellow helmets roll with the quarterback so those throwing lanes become really really constricted forcing tight throws that almost impossible to complete wait goes under Center and a handoff goes to Chapman and Chapman has room to run again right between the tackles he just gets north and south in a hurry and a big game to make it a very manageable third and short here as he gets seven on second and ten you see his stature big body running back by the way that's a great number number three you're a fan of that number i brainwashed my kids I have five five kids four of them are athletes all of them wore number three except my one son I played college basketball what number four back across his body and he hit skier Hawkins the backup tied in an ohio state transfer and good vision looking upfield by Wade rolling out to his right and finding Hawkins for the first down this is what you call staying friendly with your quarterback he's running across the field not giving up much yardage not allowing a defensive back to undercut them and maybe make a play stay friendly with the quarterback that means parallel and even makes it for an easy throw it's a nice throw and catch by Wade they put Mallory in motion and they hand it off to Chapman a flag comes out as Chapman breaks a couple of tackles and rumbles down inside the 25-yard line but this is likely going to be a hold on Youngstown State it's on Matt Jones number 55 let's repeat down had a tough tough task here you can see he opposed it but it was pretty clear Jackson Browne backup linebacker comes in on a run blitz looks like he caught Matt Jones off guard just a little bit because of the speed of Jackson he had no other choice but to hold him Mancha preserves into this contest now for NDSU defensively see tre fort out there along with a bunch of other backup bison here's Chapman trying to get wide on this play across the 40 and across the 35 down to the 34 yard line so he gets some of it back on first and 20 just like we talked about with Wade at quarterback once Chapman decided to go down hill you saw how he squared his shoulders tried to take on the tackler and weber and got that positive yardage with his body falling forward that's a good run so they have Suren flank to the near side as Bo Pelini looks on at his offense trying to sustain this Drive and get some points out of it Wade's going to keep it himself on the option and he's across the 30 and down to the 27 yard line so what was first 220 now turns into third at six and so the ones have done a good job of getting some of this back and putting themselves in a manageable situation here and again this could be four down territory you have the win but the paint let's probably even think about going for it on fourth down now to go for it on fourth down now in this situation you're on their side of the 50 yard line the clock is continuing to run this is another solid Drive multiple drives in the second half by Youngstown State not sure if you want to settle for a field goal at this juncture might as well continue on try to get it touchdown wait out of the shotgun he's gonna take it himself and he's gonna have enough for the first down as he reaches out and gets their ball to the 20-yard line he only needed to get to the 22 so we got more than enough to move the chains and nice drive being put together here and engineered by this freshman quarterback if there's a positive to come out of this game for Youngstown State it's the way this freshman quarterback is played absolutely and we talked about it earlier in this second half bo Pelini is gonna watch this film he's gonna watch this third fourth quarter specifically to see how his young guys the substances have come in like we'd like Chapman some things they can do to be better because that's the future of this program London Pearson who was injured earlier the contest back in there tripped up behind the line of scrimmage and dropped for a loss as shooting in there for North Dakota State was Jake kava a redshirt freshman at a Moorhead Minnesota coming in and making the play and that's one of the things you see from North Dakota State gain and you can put the second string in they still have great players up and down the depth of this program is staggering Wade on the quarterback run and he's got room he's at their 15 and he scampers into the end zone for a touchdown for Y as you this is what they wanted to exploit all evening long getting 1 an open field with their quarterback on that zone read excellent job up front a blocky look at the block look at the bodies moving a lead blocker and your right guard miles Douglas and then the athleticism shown by Wade there no chance for the safety to catch that young man 26 yard touchdown run for Mark Waid joe gans the quarterback coach for youngstown state talking with his pupil about that drive always something to learn especially when you're a young quarterback even when you're successful there's things you could learn from those situations as Youngstown State has been efficient and looked good offensively here in the second half with a trail 49:17 [Music] Youngstown State able to sustain a 10-play 66 yard drive to put their second touchdown of the contest on the board first touchdown of the second half they've put a couple of drives together for ten points here the second half but it's been all buys it in this one 56 17 years score with 817 remaining in the contest and Youngstown State will kick it away and kick it through the back of the end zone Colt McFadden the sophomore kicker for Youngstown State handling that job here tonight and also uses it long for the Penguins and now North Dakota state's offense back out there and we told you last series for the Bison Zeb Nolan in at quarterback freelances day is done and Trey Lance just continues to impress puts up big numbers again here tonight in what was asked of him very efficient numbers probably the best way to term it for Trey Lance and again no interceptions Nolan with the give this is Sabian Clark the redshirt freshman out of Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City Iowa Sabian Clark's a guy that also factors into the future for NDSU at the running back position he has some experience as well just a big depth chart with a bunch of really good running backs for the Bison why wouldn't you want to be a part of this program you get an opportunity just about every year to play in the postseason deep into the postseason you know it's run in a great professional manner Plus espera six success Clark on the carry again D Ford shot in there along with justice Reed on the stop and it's thirded long here for North Dakota State clock running at 7:25 buys him pretty much keeping it on the ground at this point Nolan had the one play-action down the seam to Babbage towards the end of the third quarter but otherwise the Bison have run the football here the second and Youngstown State trying to bring a blitz from Randall Posey and Nolan steps up and hits kapoor's over the middle for a positive game but not enough for the force first down so it brings up fourth and short for NDSU this is a nice job this is where the nonverbal communication comes in play kapoor's actually runs a hot route which is that slant because of the defender blitzing off of his face number 35 Christian Randle Posey the linebacker that lined up outside on the slot blitzed and Kapoor's ran hot route just didn't get enough so the Bison will punt it away here Jake Coates is back to return the punt and it is a spiraling kick hits at the 35 yard line and returnable here for coats and could coverage from North Dakota state's punt team to drop her buzz he gets back to the 34-yard line so the Penguins will get it back they trail 56:17 as North Dakota State rolling to their 30th consecutive victory here today [Music] the Bison leading Vega in the fort 56:17 and earlier this year a North Dakota State football players including starting tight at Ben Ellefson defensive end Derek Tusker and defensive tackle Koch carts and a chance to be part of a mission trip over spring break the group when it's part of the North Dakota State Fellowship of Christian Athletes with other bison athletes to the Dominican Republic to volunteer as part of that week down there they spent three days at a private school building a cement wall and teaching English to children Ellefson said it made him more grateful for the basic things in life like food shelter and family good stuff Kelly appreciate that update as youngstown state back with the football here and it's chapman again and chapman is tripped up as he gets to the 35 yard line gain of a couple on first down and brings up second today [Music] Youngstown State has looked good offensively here in the second half with Mark Waid engineering this offense and that is something to get excited about for the future yet Nathan Mane's go down at the injury tonight he's a senior Joe Craig Kraft is a sophomore so he's a guy that Youngstown State feels good about too but Mark Waid looks like he has a really bright future in front of him well just the fact of the way the rules are set now and how often they can hit and how many padded practices trying to go deep for Pearson and Pearson just couldn't quite make the catch that's pretty good for home by making mark Wade that's a great throw very catchable pass there should be caught even into double and triple coverage you can see holds the safety with his eyes yeah write it right through the hand should have been a big play for Youngstown State but as I was talking about the the opportunity here for these young guys you have you don't have the luxury of having full speed practices you don't have the luxury of doing live 9 on sevens and basically scrimmaging during the season in practice because how many padded practices you can have and so on so this is an opportunity to be with the bullets flying go out there and actually get some real reps against the quality defense way to avoids the rush the first time and then throws it away and it falls incomplete and it brings up four to nine and Youngstown State will have to punt here pretty good pocket awareness from way too he's got the timing the clock goes off in his head very well we hadn't seen him scramble unnecessarily at this point those are the intangibles that you really can't teach they have to have a feel in that pocket talking and he seems to have that itch this is Ryan Kaminsky the punter for Youngstown State may punts it away and it is fair caught at the 32 and a half yard line by height and so the Bison get it back let's take a look at next week's games in the Missouri Valley Football Conference Youngstown State will visit South Dakota at the Dakota dome in Vermillion Illinois State and South Dakota State in Brookings Missouri State and Southern Illinois our Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the week next week the Salukis playing really well Western Illinois gets to go to the Fargodome and take that North Dakota State Indiana State at top 10 ranked Northern Iowa next weekend as sabian Clark still in there running back for North Dakota State not much do it on first down newton quarterback for North Dakota State though as Zeb Nolan got a couple of drives and now Noah Sanders the redshirt sophomore out of Lakeville Minnesota is at the helm of his Bison offense also seeing some substitutes more substitutes for the Penguins on defense that last tackle jaylen Madison the defense of that red shirt freshman came up with a nice stop almost two completely new defensive line with Antwon Cooke being the one exception at defensive tackle saving Clark again and again not much there for Sabian Clark trying to find some room off that right side but shooting in there is West's top suit out of Boardman Ohio to make the stop and it brings up third and long for NDSU get a look at chains Jackson who's in there now for Youngstown State chérif fine up who is a starter most of the year last year because the injury to justice Retd he is back to backing up Reid this season a lot of injuries last year for Youngstown state that really derailed their season they're a little bit healthier this year and the play has shown it overall here's Sabian Clark and Clark off the right side gets across the 40 up to the 41 yard line but shy of the first down and NDSU will run the punt squad back down to the field again here fourth and two for the Bison and with a 56 17 lead early now flex the you're gonna punt this one away give the ball back to Youngstown State the Youngstown State [Music] second quarter of the season going one and three now starting this third quarter off at oh and one considering where they started this season somewhat of a surprise around this program that they had dipped so quickly coach will call for the fair catch here for a Youngstown State let's take a look at the remaining schedule for Youngstown State you look at what's Damon were just talking about start out Porto top 10 ranked team and then you go to Northern Iowa hotly contested game against two really good teams fallen close with their heads a big lead on South Dakota State late and the Jackrabbits had that big fourth quarter for the come-from-behind victory then the tough loss to a team in southern Illinois that's red-hot bounce-back last week with the win and now here's what's in front of them South Dakota Indiana State Illinois State it's not a game left that Youngstown State can't find a way to win exactly so finishing on a high note is obviously optimum and Bo Pelini 's mind and then see where the chips fall at that time certainly still a lot of opportunity in front of his Youngstown State team the loss here tonight will drop them to 5 and 4 and 1 and for the conference but they have a chance to finish strong with those final three games and certainly an opportunity still to get to eight wins potentially out there for Youngstown State that has to be the mindset around this program put this game to bed relatively quickly try to learn what you can learn from it from the film perspective but the focus has to be finishing out the season three and OH Wade swings it out to Turner Turner drops it and they're gonna call it incomplete Turner was nervous it was a backwards passive he's trying to scoop it up as quickly as he could but they do call it an incomplete Nash rather be safe than sorry those type of plays could be a lateral I've seen much of him in this game he had been a staple of this running attack for the last couple of years I remember him bursting on the scene as a freshman to attack Wade goes under center and he'll hand it off and Turner bounces it outside then finally is dropped after it hanging of a couple here's some interesting things on North Dakota State they're going to win their 30th consecutive game here tonight that is the second longest streak in FCS history behind the 33 that they themselves had from 2012 to 2014 how about this 17 of their wins in that streak came against ranked opponents which is life in the valley essentially I mean that's just you're playing a ranked team every other weekend essentially in this league but North Dakota State as well this one Dayne and blew my mind they've played just eight games since the beginning of 2011 without at least a share of the conference lead in this league where there are so many good teams and so much quality competition as the punt is away and hike calls for the fair catch a minute 13 remaining of the contest here is what is left on the schedule for North Dakota State Western Illinois got their first win earlier today then South Dakota comes to the Fargodome and then they finish up and southern Illinois against Nick hill Squad so manageable finish to the season for North Dakota State Matt Entz is gonna go to nine and Oh as a head coach here with the wind tonight and NDSU takes over here and they are gonna go to the victory formation from their own 40-yard line as Sanders will take a knee and he'll have to do so at least one more time here before this one becomes a final but North Dakota State jumped out to a big lead in this one they led 42 to 7 at the half and they were able to put a couple more scoring drives together in the second half Youngstown State will feel disappointed in the loss but I think they'll feel like they got some work out of this second half and they found some things that they could improve upon moving forward and that's always part of the goal to even if the games out of reach you're trying to get better absolutely in back when I was playing when you had wins big wins or losses there was a midnight rule and in no situations at midnight the coaches tell you hey enjoy it or think about it relish it and then at midnight shake it off and be prepared and ready to go for next week so that's the mindset that has to be around this penguin Bo Pelini and Matt n she saw them exchanging handshakes and congratulations Bo Pelini has so much respect and how could you not for this North Dakota State program but there's a lot of respect between those two head coaches talking to them this week Mad Ants thinks a lot of what Bo Pelini is trying to get done here at Youngstown State and what they've put together here as well 30 games in a row now for North Dakota staying the second in FCS history in terms of winning streaks as we said earlier in the broadcast that beat goes on for this North Dakota State team its next man up mentality and the next man up is always seemingly just as good as the first guy yeah business as usual doesn't matter if they're away from the Fargodome in hostile territory no matter where they go they play they come with a business mentality and more times than not they get the job done you are looking at really one of the dynasties in the history of college football right there in this North Dakota State football team and they are looking for title number eight here in 2019 so for Dean and Hughes in Kelly Burke I'm Lynn riddle sinks so long from Youngstown where the final score Youngstown State 56 young their excuse me North Dakota State 56 Youngstown State 17 hogging cheering on the ESPN networks are streaming live an archive on ESPN app this has been a presentation of ESPN [Music]
