he's alive and I think the legs of each quarterback is going to be equally as important as their ability to throw the ball and keep plays alive and even run for important first downs on third down conversions well my final thought is on a guy who McIlvain is going to want to hit he's hit dion McShane the most of any other receiver but he is five foot nine 155 pounds and primarily will be guarded by Jabril cox the linebacker today he's 6-3 to 35 now McShane was an FBS track recruit so how's the linebacker going to stake and stay with him well we all know that Cox is the best athlete the Bison have that will be a very fun one to watch those two go at it today thank you guys we have spent most of the show talking about Northern Iowa's defense and how North Dakota State in Northern Iowa could be a good game on the defensive side of the ball but this game is about Northern Iowa's offense there are 90 eighth in the country in offense they've been super inconsistent if they're gonna get it done today they need to find some offense I just don't know where that comes from Kyle yeah hey thanks Ryan I completely agree with you look I think there's gonna be a closer to game than it really should be I think Northern Iowa plays well in the Fargodome this is a place where they're not really intimidated that's one team that can actually say that in the valley however I think it I think it will be close early on because of Northern Iowa's run defense I think they'll make it a little bit tough on NDSU's offense just because of how stingy they are up front but ultimately I just don't see them having enough offensively and I see NDSU running away with this game late definitely a huge bison win here today everybody's super quiet because Kyle was just actually flipping the coin one power game Cofield needed a yard he got what he needed up to the 48 and that'll move the chains and Larson Smith is an interesting guy when you look at him we were just saw him see him warming up without pads he looks like he should be playing basketball from Ben Jacobson a keyway high six seven kind of a slim 230 but plays with tremendous Bend and has real a good explosion off the end but did you see who the Bison just moved right there number 16 that's Smith India she thinks they can run at him today and gain some things in the on the ground because he is only 230 Lance play-action job stringing that thing out and it was Smith getting up field bubbling it out in the loss of one Austin Evans the outside linebacker as a sack end of interception this year for the Panthers but so far on the ground game number 16 right here that's a guy who is when it comes to rushing the quarterback he's the best of the FCS at second so far this year but the Bison want to grunt at him and that's been something that defensive portator David Braun continues to toy with here by isn't playing the nickel right now McIlvain out of the shotgun he's going to take a shot deep weston made the adjustment but could not hang on to the football pretty good coverage from Josh Hayes but Weston one of those guys that is a big play receiver he leads the valley with 381 receiving yards and four touchdowns this season okay on the other side - Jalen James is also a big receiver that McIlvain will go to in 50/50 ball situation here are the numbers for McIlvain just the one interception a the Jackrabbits came on top some times but it's just Northern Iowa to me it was always so hard fought and and I guess that's so that's why I wanted to come to this game it just felt like the right one for me you're back in the Minneapolis area tell us what you're doing you're around football at all oh well not right now no I actually I could have coached back in Hutchinson they wanted me to come coach but I figured I'd take a little bit away from the game for a little bit and right now I'm just working right now I'm actually going to law school next year so I took my LSAT and now I'm just not that they that they got to Lancer there was a threat of a sack but there was enough pressure to force him to move looks like Northern Iowa will take a knee here and head into the locker room and be content to be down just for well after the start and after being down a couple of touchdowns coach fairly has no problem with 18 14 at this stage of the game oh it was 15 nothing North Dakota State after the first quarter in Northern Iowa a couple of big passing plays and the Panthers right back into the football game after the first 30 minutes and Ryan Geller will catch a word with NDSU head coach Madden's man he got after the fast start got some points early they've been able to creep back into this thing though get a big big turnover and then also in the balls in the 12 yard line that sits off and then we had a busted coverage in the end zone and then just you know too many big plays you know we were get them in second alone we can't get off the field on third down right now and so were really expecting yeah well I mean we northern I was doing what we kind of expected him to play better to play well in the in the Fargodome they'd come here and they'd play well and now offensively they've been doing some things better than I think you like we said both of us were expecting wanted a little bit more of a bison run away but there's still a second half let's take a look at the first half highlights here though of NDSU and Northern Iowa getting that first look here bison with those steps scripted first series looking really good here trailing 15 explodes yeah I lost the coin flip just for this reason Beth so the Bison office and go out and they have a really another really good start to another Lance two schools here in the end zone for that leave absolutely trail Lance and that good start and then hey the two-point conversion comes out again nothing NDSU lead bison defense just stepping up as well Jabril cops get in that press Northern Iowa was driving here a little bit an issue gets they get tough in the red zone as I have all year forces an attempt at a field goal they miss it wide right trade a couple of series here between the Bison and the Panthers and then tre Lance again goes deep Christian Watson this time this is the absolute perfect throw and catch group but for Christian to get put down with that is unbelievable he's kind of coming out he had a really good game against Illinois 15 nothing NDSU lead and then into the second quarter James Hendricks up with that interception the trick play backfires in James Hendrix's seems to always be around the ball and making plays and get another interception for a 31 yard return but then that momentum switches right back up fumble from the Bison on the handoff here and you and I scoops it up here we get 42 years this was the turning point of the half by far I mean Northern Iowa I was not in this game at all it kind of looked like it might be a run away for a second and then at the turnovers a huge momentum shift and then we'll McIlvain hits Isiah Weston for a 17 yard touching McIlvain has been better than I than I thought he would be he's kind of throwing the ball up but he has big receivers and they're making plays for him it's 15 7 NDSU with the lead failed and bison on the run again getting that run game kind of go and Adam Cofield for 30 yeah the run game a gap has been stymied a little bit by this really good Northern Iowa defense but they have found some success on the edges this one results in a field goal Griffin crows at 25 yards for an 18-7 then coming up you and I on the drive again a McIlvain to Weston on this one for a 30-yard connection and then looked like a false start there too and somehow it wasn't called but another touchdown for Northern Iowa and then the Bison are on the run again trail lands here 13 yard fifth carryin the quarterback run has been really successful is along with the edges but the quarterback run has given the the Panthers some issues Kobe Johnson to the outside man yeah just like that Kobe Johnson another good run for him getting outside and get on the edge of that northern I would be fix and then NDSU looks for another field goal closer his first Miss of the season yeah yeah something you're not expecting but a missed field goal there from those eye you know tough way to end a half for sure yeah certainly some things they have to talk about at halftime expect plenty of adjustments I know it halftime it is insane for the bison football team yeah I mean this is this is a game that I it to me it shouldn't be as close to theirs any issues they've actually played pretty well for the most part but McElveen has been kind of throwing the ball up in the offense it has been moving it they have some big wide receivers and they have some weapons but I feel it just feels kind of like NDSU's in control of this game turnovers will do that to you though so a little bit cleaner half and I kind of think that NDSU can run away with this one well take a look at our North apart North Dakota certified seed producers halftime stats here taking a look at that 1814 bison lead right now a fairly balanced game between these two teams and they're fairly balanced in there they're passing it and they're passing games as well well what you kind of expect for mine you see you balance from passing rushing their commitment to the rushing game is awesome to see every single game NDSU finds the way even against a really good defense to to come up with those rushing yards Northern Iowa has not been able to run the ball and that's something we use especially you see the kind of to thrive with but they've thrown the ball better than we thought but they'd be able to do you know one of the big things I think is this is kind of that old school bison football kind of what you were used to play and really that grinded out and what we're used to seeing between NDSU and you're not yeah it's a physical averaging 19 and a half yards every time the ball has been caught obviously it's been one-on-one situations to the outside and the su has been doing some pretty good things to prevent anything happening much in the running game so I think it has to be a little bit more of that all-or-nothing stuff from you and I yeah credits will McIlvain he's been under some pressure but he's hung in there and he's delivered some balls for his receivers just go get him yeah talented kid I mean you don't they don't handy the job you earned the job he's the only guy in Iowa for a history to have a season of 2000 passing yards yes and 1000 rushing yards so he has that multi-dimension the running part of it hasn't really happened much today the Bison thought they'd see more quarterback Ron but the Panthers had some success getting the ball in those 50/50 situations outside and then Trevor L on the top running back for Northern Iowa hobbled off in that second quarter not sure of his status if he'll come back as well it may be soku and gooseman that have to take the Panthers home here in the second half as well exactly because it did not look like Alan was feeling really well when Tony left offensively North Dakota State from a ball control standpoint ran 12 more plays and had about a seven-minute advantage in time of possession but just not able to cash in and that's a big reason why he NDSU only has a four point B I think maybe boils down to first down efficiency for the Bison an NDSU was a little more efficient on first down they closed a little bit easier turned off the second half with a Peterson farms seed kickoff kickoff the planting season [Applause] touchback for you and I and the Panthers we'll start from the 25-yard line that man right there tenth most wins in the like he's gonna be caught in the backfield and then able to make something out of nothing and dives ahead to the 27 james k's are there to make the stop for indy as you look to me that McIlvain had to call an audible on that play after the snap because I think he was rolling to look to throw off the flat with two receivers out there but he didn't get a chance to roll to his level hand off boy nice job by North Dakota State knew his keys were coming off his block and then making the tackle got some help um Josh Hayes as well so that will bring up third and seven that was Alan that did have the ball so he must have not taped up for now he's jogging off on this third long situation there's Trevor the senior we have not seen a lot of marques bridges in that second quarter but he's out there playing the slot now here in the nickel package on third and long Northern Iowa had four third down conversions last week against ysu of eight plus yards let's see if they can come up with a big one here three-man rush McIlvain across the middle ooh big hits and the ball is loose and markeith bridges has it I think it was Josh Hayes putting the lick hot D on McShane who is still down McShane is going to go back to the turf after Hayes at the head he made the catch tried to make that football move to get upfield but Hazel's playing in his own bison went with max protection here lien or that
