More info on the proposal here for people who are interested - http://www.scribd.com/doc/51592987/Nautilus-X-Holderman-1-26-11 The proposal was (unfortunately) dropped, it would've taken three launches to assemble it in orbit, with an estimated cost of 3.7 billion dollars and five years until it would be complete. It's essentially a space station with an engine.

If we went with existing heavy lift and commercial crew for LEO transfer I wonder how quickly we could get it built using all the SLS/Orion funds for this instead.
