if you missed the last video I'm Elizabeth from the blog a suitcase full of books and I and my partner joined travel bloggers Karen Nate for a week-long cruise in Myanmar along the Irrawaddy River in preparation for the trip I listened to George Orwell's burmese days but this book didn't prepare me very well for the visits to temples and rural villages we would see during the week luckily on board ship I found another book to better suit the journey [Music] [Applause] though the glass palace by amitav Ghosh starts in Mandalay before the British occupation the descriptions of life in Myanmar were similar to what we saw today the Myanmar people have not lost their traditional way of life despite the country's political history for in the morning we happened upon a village ceremony celebrating the day young boys during a monastery to become novice monks well you might think the locals were dressed traditionally for the ceremony most locals we met wear the traditional laundry wrap State tourists wear them too we were instructed in the wrapping of a long deep before our first visits to any temples pagodas or villages and after this fold inside visiting temples you must remove your shoes and socks at the entrance however shoulders and knees must be covered so if you're wearing shorts the longi is an easy way to cover up during your visit we're touring the Shwedagon pagoda it's completely gold our tour guide and listening to them be a little earpieces so that he doesn't have to yell at us here [Music] we're currently exploring a Irrawaddy village that's famous for weaving bamboo like this wall behind me and they also leave huge baskets that they use for storing tobacco leaves them [Music] at each village we were warmly welcomed here the schoolchildren stopped their lessons to sing for us at our next destination we observe the handcrafting of clay water jugs that are used all over the country and we were even allowed to enter a monastery to watch the rope receiving ceremony of young novice monks [Music] [Music] our next outing took us to the town of Seguin where one of the characters in the glass palace chooses to live out her days at the nunnery there as surprisingly we would be visiting that nunnery but first we stopped at a temple to take in some panoramic views of Myanmar we're in the city of Seguin this morning and we're getting a tour of a pretty temple and it also has an amazing panoramic view so photographers in the group were pretty happy about that [Music] so in some time they've kind of modernized a little bit check out these lights [Music] like we're like just a diversion right [Music] so these are posts that families paid for to help build the temple so their names are on these hosts [Music] we're now visiting a nunnery in the town of Seguin and [Applause] [Music] we're doing more sightseeing by bikes today so we've all got our bikes Mike and I brought some gel seat pad so we're writing this rigid comfortable [Music] we made a quick stop in Amer of her a silk workshop [Music] then it was back on the bikes to our final destination of the evening kara and Nate have a tradition of taking a few minutes each evening to stop and watch the sunset and this evening they planned a special surprise for us all after a long bike ride Sam fans are waiting to take us on to a lake where we would watch the sunset behind the world's oldest and longest peak Ford bridge as we sip champagne what made this isn't more special is that this is a bridge pictured on the cover of the glass Palace you'll have to read the book to find out where the teak wood comes in mingun bail is 90 times by now our ship had docked in Mandalay but we had a few more sights to see before we would have to say goodbye thanks you know the Bell and then hold it bring it down there no a real rate yeah [Music] harder harder [Music] the glass palace refers to man delays former palace which we did see the outside wall of but as today it is mostly reproduction our tour guys chose to take us tomorrow thent ik places right now we're visiting a Buddha that is covered in gold leaf like six inches thick and then after this we're gonna go visit where the gold leaf is me females aren't actually allowed to go inside and see the Buddha so there's a TV outside where I could sit and see what the men do at the factory we were shown the traditional way gold is pounded into leaves only one of us had to go at it while traveling it was great to get to observe care and Nate filming and to learn from them and hopefully this vlog was a little better than the ones before because of that we're still doing this and enjoy yes because we didn't have that expectation we just wanted to make videos we weren't trying to impress anyone we're having fun so if you're picking up vlogging or you know doing anything videoing just keep trying like keep going don't get bent out of shape because there are people out there that are better always meet other people and I just feel like people go out into it thinking like it's only gonna take you know a week and then you'll be a youtuber but it's don't do it by yourself I know it sounds cheesy you know just don't do that thank you - Karen Nate and thank you to the rest of you for joining me via the vlog make sure to subscribe to the blog and the channel for more bookish adventures see you in the next video
