hey everyone welcome to another video and this one i'm going to be talking about my top 10 tips that i really used as an iv student and that i want to share with all of you who are currently in the program it's a tough program so you're going to need all the support and tips you can get i hope this video helps you and let's get into it so my first tip is to learn the ib objectives and command terms for each subject because ib is like a global program they have to standardize the program across numerous different countries and cultures so here we have the objectives for 1.6 cell division the skills the applications and the understandings these are the things you actually need to know and what i would do is try to form a question out of each of these for example for this understanding your question that could be asked on the exam could be distinguish between cytokinesis and plants and animals and i even remember this our biology teacher was like it was like for the steps of cellular respiration she was like oh a non-ib student at our school has to learn all of these steps but you guys only you guys only need to know these and similarly there's not much point in learning all the names of the amino acids when all you have to do is draw a generalized amino acid structure unless you like love biology and you have all the time in the world then you can go do that go for it and also know your command terms so just literally search up id command terms and read about all of them it may seem really stupid i was like why am i learning how to like describe things and how to state things like isn't this like basic english but they want something specific from each of them and they can make a difference between you having an extra three or two marks for example let's take the ib command term which is distinguished which is something like make clear the differences between two concepts or something and right there you already know that the thing to pay attention to is okay this command term is only asking me for the differences not the similarities and also it's asking me to make clear so make clear basically means you have to put like a word or something to make it clear such as x is like this whereas y is like this so that term in between makes it really clear if i hadn't read like the definition for that command term then i might have stated the similarities too and i'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to do that the next tip i have which is kind of universal for any program but it's to be organized set an organizational system you're going to have a lot of newspapers and notes from all of your different subjects so it's really important to be able to keep track of them all you're going to need all of these for revision later on whether this is making sure to use divisors or making sure to have extra folders for french our teacher actually made us student advisors so one was like test otherwise like reading oral listening like it was divided like that also like ideally having a binder and a folder for each subject so this is my hl english binder and then the folder that i brought along with it basically i was really only bringing this to school it had the current day notes and also the prior weeks notes worksheets in here and then this would have everything else from the prior months basically i was only bringing this to school and then trans continuously transferring stuff from here into here and it made things so much lighter and easier okay so the next tip i've had is to build a positive relationship with your teachers this is obviously true for any program but especially for ivy because it's a two year long program and you'll probably have the same teacher for the whole two years for each subject i have the same french teacher same biology teacher a math teacher this is why it's so important to get to know them well they are your advisor they're going to help you for exams and also to edit your first draft of your ias how do you build that good relationship you need to participate in class ask 100 questions after class go to any study extra help sessions they offer and chit chat when you get there early in the morning um say good morning say goodbye always arrive on time and also just to join any clubs that they're the advisor of this way you can ensure that you're on good terms with them the next is to get in the right mindset and surround yourself with the right people and this is so important because you have to get in that positive mindset and have friends who are encouraging you who are willing to help you because ivy is tough and you're in the middle you're going to be like i want to quit i i hate this is so hard why did i sign up for this because trust me those thoughts came up to my head so many times and halfway through i actually thought i was going to quit but it was having such a good support system and putting myself in the mindset where i was like i can do this i'm going to get rewarded in the end that really helped me kind of push through don't be discouraged if your marks aren't what you expect them in the beginning there were numerous times when i got fives and i was like that is not what i want like i was very disappointed but you have time to prove your mark it's not the end of the world it's the final exam that does count and as well as the final ia so if you get a five on a project or assignment just take that as a learning opportunity and use it as motivation to get better one of the things that my english teacher said that really resonated with me was everything passes and i was like that is so true like whenever you're struggling whenever you're having a bad moment that's not going to last forever so it's like the difficult moments i'm facing in ib are not lasting forever and i just have to push through okay so the next tip is just to utilize the resources that you have not just your teachers not just your extra help times but also question banks past papers youtube videos sample ias that you can find online quizlets textbooks and especially quizlets for definitions like just go study them there's so many so here if you literally go to ib resources there's tons of past papers you can just click on ivy past papers and then if i did language and literature they're all here choose your language to choose your level and then it'll bring you to a page full of past ones and then here i'm just clicking on one and then you can study these do practice after of course look at the scheme and compare it with the answer you wrote so i also have searched up ibm extended essay samples i use this so much to look at previous people's extended essays for mine so like for history for example i looked at their student work what they wrote to kind of get inspiration and i also looked at what the marks the examiner gave them and also there are their individual reflection because i was like what do i write so i use that for inspiration you can also search up ib chemistry examples click on their official website and you have tons of examples with all the different types of experiments as well you can also use this for inspiration or just to open it to see the general formatting that it should be so for example for this one you can see how there's a research question an introduction a prediction hypothesis method and that can be what you can use to structure yours as well finally there's bioninja it's so helpful i use it for biology all the time they have summary pdfs and so if i just click on one there's like a whole summer pdf that's very cute and printable take advantage of the internet all right so my next tip is to manage your time well like if you don't have good time management skills that's fine but you better develop there are so many things to do okay and our school really helped us in this by making different things assigned at different times so first year of ivy that was when our sl subject ias were due in december of second year of ivy that was when erickson i said theory of knowledge stuff was due and in march or april around a second year of iv that was when our hl is reduced so they made it like split up well for us so it wasn't super hectic near the second year end of ib you can do that for yourself too or just start planning at different sections of different years so that you're not too overwhelmed at the end also you can make sure you are managing your time well by using things to help you such as a schedule or a planner a schedule is really good for seeing like your day to day tasks and what i did was actually make like a little spreadsheet and have what i should be completing kind of like hour by hour day by day something that's really good for time management is creating those mini deadlines for yourself or many task deadlines ahead of the actual deadline for the big overall project sample your project is due friday and you're sending a little bit of that for every day monday you are planning tuesday you're filming wednesday you're editing thursday you're editing you know kind of like that so breaking it down to small parts i find that a planner is really good for having all your dates your due dates down and helping with long-term planning and knowing what you need to prioritize this was in my planner where i put all the due dates for june and that really helped me to see like a rough outline of my week and i thought this one from indigo is so nice and it was on sale and also there's two apps that i can recommend so it's i procrastinate which helps you to keep track of your deadlines and there's also self-control which blocks out certain sites when you're trying to study in focus but granted you can do this on your own you can throw out your phone to focus okay so the next tip is to take every test seriously make sure you are seriously taking all the unit topic tests very seriously because each of them is a learning opportunity to see what your strengths are what your weaknesses are what types of questions can be asked and also just to put yourself in a test environment and see if you can work under pressure work under time and kind of to get a feel of how you would approach questions how you're going to allocate your time so for economics what our teacher actually did was every one of our unit tests was like a mock exam and i really got like to know some strategies in how to handle those those big paper ones and how to be able to write like two like essays in 45 minutes okay the final tip i have is to never hesitate to go ask for help and it seems like very stupid but i know there are so many people who don't do it because they're they're afraid of what their teacher's gonna say they think their question is stupid or whatever else no do it especially if it's something that will really help you with your stress and your mental health so for example if you have a ton of assignments due on the same day go and ask your teachers and see if you can change one of the due dates and they really understand what you're going through you know they're the ones kind of going along that path with you okay yeah so that's the end of my video i hope you guys enjoyed you learned a lot thank you for watching i'll see you in the next video bye
