- Hey, everyone. Welcome back to my channel. I'm Hannah, and today we are going to be making a five-year plan. So I was inspired to make this video when I saw my friend Sana talk
about it in a video of hers, and she said the way that she likes to do five-year plans is not necessarily set
five-year goals, but be like, what do I want my
day-to-day life to look like in five years' time, and then
what do I need to be doing now in order for that to happen? And so I've been thinking
about that a lot, and then I sat down to start
creating my five-year plan and things just spiralled. Things escalated. I found myself Googling five-year plans and finding all of these
different resources. There's this old man on
YouTube called Brian Tracy who has tonnes of success videos about personal development and he had one on a five-year plan, and
he seemed real smart, and then just lots of other life coaches and business coaches,
people offering courses on creating five-year plans. What is this world? I opened a can of worms and I don't know whether I
wanted to have done that. So then I was looking at all of this stuff and it was getting very overwhelming, and I started using some of the things that they were talking about, asking some of the
questions that they said that you should ask yourself, and then I scrapped it all
and just did my own thing. Well, didn't scrap it all,
but maybe consolidated, cherry-picked the things that I wanted. So that was the emotional roller coaster that I went on in planning this video. And also in planning this video, I had this brainwave of
like, hang on a second. I'm pretty sure I created a five-year plan and put it on my blog a few years ago, and so I Googled 'Hannah
Witton five-year plan,' and lo and behold, there it was, and I wrote this in 2017 before I got ill. So that's really interesting. So the way that this whole
video is going to work is we're gonna go through the plan that I set for myself 2 1/2 years ago before all of my health stuff, so obviously a lot of things
will have changed from that, and then we want to go
through some of the things our dear friend Brian Tracy has said. I don't know if he's our dear friend. I know nothing about him. I've watched one video of him talking about a five-year plan,
just putting it out there. And we'll look at some of the categories that you might want to add
to your five-year plan, and then this weird table
thing that I tried to create, and then it just got overwhelming
and then we scrapped that, and then to the final
iteration of my five-year plan. But here's what I think
about five-year plans: They are flexible. Literally the only reason why you would make a five-year plan is to figure out what you want to do now. That's it. It's not actually a plan that
you're going to then follow, and it's not a predictor
of where you're going to be in five years' time. It just tells you what
your priorities are now and tells you what you
need to be focusing on now. We're making a plan for
five years in the future, but actually it's got
nothing to do with that. It's got everything to
do with the present. That's how I like to think of it, and if you're not using a
five-year plan in that way, then I don't think it's gonna
really serve you very well because the only things that
will truly serve you are things that you can take action on now that, in terms of your priorities right now, will potentially get you
to where you want to go, but again, where you
want to go might change. Anyway, we can stop philosophising
about five-year plans. Can we? No, we will continue. Mm. So, Hannah's five-year
plan from September 2017. So I'm technically halfway through. We're like 2 1/2 years
into this five-year plan, and it was before I got ill, and I'd completely forgotten all about it until I started planning this video. It's a very short list, and actually this is more
of a like five-year goals and mostly career-related, I think all career-related, actually, and they're more goals than like a plan. I don't know. What's the difference
between a plan and a goal? So these are my goals: publish second book, get master's, write third book, question mark, launch stationery line, TV,
brackets, presenting-slash-docs, sex ed curriculum-slash-government. These are super vague. More Twitch livestreams,
have one permanent staff. So I technically have only ticked one of these things off fully,
which is publish second book. We did that in 2019. I published "The Hormone Diaries." And then I went through this list and I basically ticked the
things that I have done, crossed the things that I haven't done and don't care about anymore,
which is most of them. How wild is that? Only 2 1/2 years in
and I'm just like, meh. And then put a little
orange line next to one, said I'm like, "Yeah, that's
still important to me." So publish second book, done. The other thing that I was like, "done," was more Twitch livestreams. However, I also put an X next to that because I'm not really doing them anymore and it's not a priority for me right now. I basically did it a
lot for like six months, but then other work just got really busy and Twitch livestreams were like at the bottom of my priority list, and then anytime I have a free evening, I'm like, "No, I do
not want to be working. "I would like just to chill out." So that's not really happening
anymore, but it did happen. We had a good run. Maybe it'll happen again
soon, but I'm not planning it. And then the other things
that were just like, nope, not a priority right now, either we can delete from the list or we'll just shelve it is get master's, write third book, question
mark, launch stationery line. I mean, I love stationery, but I do everything digitally now, so... Mm. Yeah, and then the Twitch livestreams. Those are the things that Xd off. And then the things that were
like, eh, is the TV stuff. Always open to TV conversations. Always having conversations with TV production companies, and yet, ♪ Nothing ever happens ♪ But that's fine, but I'm just
keeping those doors open. And then the sex ed
curriculum-slash-government, what did that mean? Did
that just mean that I wanted to be involved in writing it? That's probably not gonna happen, but I'm an ambassador for Brook, who are a sexual health charity in the UK, and they've been involved
with talking to the government about what should be in the curriculum and how it should be taught
and things like that, but I personally haven't
been directly involved or anything like that, but I kind of count this more
as just like doing more sex ed that is school-based, and that I'm still kinda
interested in, so, mm. And then have one permanent staff. That would be cool. I have people who work for
me like freelance part-time. Just having someone who's
working for me full time, oh, the joys, the joys. And then we move on to the questions that Brian Tracy said that
you should ask yourself, but also one of the things that he said in this which was like
a huh moment for me, which is asking these
questions for yourself for every year in your five-year plan. I was like, "Whoa, okay,"
and then I didn't do it 'cause it was overwhelming. But the questions that he said are: What do I want to change this year? Where am I living? I really like this one
because it's concrete, and you could just be making
more solid plans around that, because if you're like, "Actually, I wanna move in this year," then that will affect your other plans because you need to have
your monies in order and work and family and
all of that kinda stuff. Anyway, how do I want to
better myself this year? What steps do I need to
make for financial security? What are some fun things
I want to do this year, and what goals do I have for my family? So it's all pretty basic stuff. And then we get on to the categories, and so there's so many
different categories that you can do for your five-year plan, but the categories that I
picked are (clears throat) personal, career, financial, home, fun, and family-slash-relationships. Some of these I couldn't define for you. Personal, what does that mean? I don't really know
what personal goals are that aren't also like career
goals or family goals. I don't know. And then family-slash-relationships, and then I'm like,
obviously I also have goals that are related to social friendships, but they kind of cross over into fun-slash-relationships and family, so that social aspect is
kind of like all in there. I don't know. And it also
could be in personal. I don't freaking know. So what I did was I took
all of these categories and I made a little table
with them on the top and then all of the years for
five years along the side, and then tried to fill
in each box with my goals or what I would want for that year. And then I decided that this
was not the right method. This just didn't work. There was so much empty space because I couldn't envision that far ahead and I couldn't be specific
about what I wanted each year, and then I realised that's because this is the wrong way to do it. Doing it that way is very much doing what I said you shouldn't do, which is actually making
a plan and being like, "By 2021, this will happen, "and by 2022, then this is my goal." No, no, no, no, no. We needed to go back to the Sana method of figuring out actually what
do I want my life to be like in five years' time, how
do I want that to look, and then working backwards from there. So screw that! Although it was a good
exercise to do, I guess, because the things I did put in there, it was like, okay, that's important. So, (clears throat) this is what I have. Again, it's in a table. Love a good table, but
it's a much simpler table. So we have the same categories. I think I put them in a
slightly different order. So we have career, personal, financial, home, family, and fun. And then I think I put in fun is like social and
leisure stuff, I think. I think that's kind of like how I did it, because friends are fun. And then what I did was I had one column that was in five years' time. So in five years' time, what
do I want this to look like, and more like a bigger picture. So not goals like, I want
to have achieved this, I want to have written this book, or I want to have hit X
amount of subscribers, not goals like that, but more just like, I think it's not concrete things. It's just more like the style
of how my life is going to be, and then the other column is first steps, and by first steps, in my head, I'm like, "What can I do this year?" So what can I do in 2020, and being very realistic about that, especially as I've
already set my 2020 goals, so also looking at my 2020
goals and just being like, "Do these align with
where I would like to be "in five years' time? "Am I on the right track? "Am I prioritising the right things?" Mm mm mm. And you guys can do this along with me. (laughs) Yeah. I'm hoping that going
through this crazy process of me figuring out the best
way for my brain might help you because then you can also cherry-pick your own things from it. You don't have to finish
off with the same method that I've used by no means at all, and I think with what I have, this is very much like
a bare-bones skeleton, and with each first steps, and I would potentially like to develop the first
steps thing at some point because while having a first steps thing is really, really important, I think there probably
should be another column before first steps which is
actually what is required for the five-year plan to happen. Say if you're renting currently, and in five years' time
you want to be a homeowner, there should be a column which is like what must happen for that to be able to happen. So it's like, okay, you
need to be earning a salary of X amount per year in
order to get a mortgage that you want for the kind
of property that you want. But then in first steps, it might be like, ask for a promotion. Do you know what I mean? I've like missed out the, this is what is necessary
in order for that to happen. I've just gone straight to
like, what's my first step now? But I do think that's an
important column to have. Most of the stuff that's in
that column is in my head. I didn't write it down. And most of it is financial. Oh my God, I swear it's basically like, oh you want to complete this goal? You wanna like get to
here in five years' time? Money. Okay, so now we're going to
get into what I have created: this absolute mess. I wasn't doing this at
9:10 p.m. last night. No. Okay, so, first category,
career in five years' time. (clears throat) Let me read this. I want my career to be
less reliant on London. I would like to have a really
good source of passive income. I want my career to be sustainable without me working 50-hour weeks. I would like to still be flexible. I want to still be working for
myself in five years' time. I would like to have my
own brand-slash-business that is self-sustaining
outside of Hannah Witton. So I would like to also be a more traditional
business owner, I guess, and that the cogs are all
happening over there somewhere. Again, at least one full-time employee. I'd love a separate
office in five years' time so that I'm not working
from home all of the time. And I've also put B2B. So what I'm doing right now is B2C. In the industry, that
means business to consumer, but you guys aren't consumers necessarily, but you're consuming the content. And then B2B is business to business, and by business to business
in terms of what I do, I think I would like to get to a point where a lot of the work that I do is around the creator-influencer
industry, maybe consulting, maybe like these Creator
Table Talks events that I'm running, working
with other creators and helping other creators. So that's why I put B2B in there, because that stuff also interests me, like the behind-the-scenes that isn't like consumer,
community-facing. Okay, and then first steps, I've put Patreon and newsletter are key. That's not really a first step, but it was more just
for me just making sure that I know where my
priorities are in terms of 2020 and where I want to be growing and what I'm going to be focusing on. And if you want to know more about why those two things
are important to me, I talk about it in my career goals video. And then I've also put,
learn as much as possible and take advantage of WIST programme. WIST is We in Social Tech, which is a business accelerator that I am taking part in this year for the first six months, so like up until July
I think it runs until. And so yeah, one of my things
that I need to do this year in order for all of those things in five years' time to be
potentially possible is just to really dive into this programme and learn as much as possible. Okay, that's literally all
I put for my first steps. We're keeping it real simples. Okay, and then in personal, okay, so some of these things
are kind of career-related, but I made it more personal because it's less business-orientated and more like personal,
professional development, and then also some personal things that aren't related to work at all. So I've put relationships
and sex education training, learning and growing in my activism, regular contributions to charities, and then personal training
and butthole surgery. Mm mm mm mm mm! So in terms of regular
contributions to charities, obviously I use my platform to talk about charities a fair bit, and I also donate to charities, but it tends to be like
in more big lump sums when something is happening, rather than like regular small amounts, and I would like in five years' time to have a bit more of a
hold on my personal finances so that I know how much
I can donate every month and also just pick charities
that mean a lot to me. So one of the reasons why I like to do the
more big donations means that I can spread it out and just be like, "Oh, I'm gonna give a bunch
of money to this charity. "Oh, this is happening, "I'm gonna give a bunch
of money to that charity." So I don't know. How do you guys manage that
if you donate to charities? I'm very bad at picking ones. And in terms of first steps
of what I can do this year, I've got NSPCC safeguarding course. So that's part of my RSC training. I want to get safeguarding
training as well, and the NSPCC have some online resources and courses to do with that. And then create talk-slash-workshops, and so this is like RSC-based. And then what I can be doing
now with the personal training and the butthole surgery,
with the butthole surgery, nothing really, just go to
my doctor's appointments. And with personal training,
I crunched the numbers, and I can't afford personal training whilst I'm saving for a wedding, so that'll be in the future. The next category is financial. So in five years' time, I would like to have a
stocks and shares ISA and be saving money in one of those. I would like to be putting
more money into my pension. I would like to be in a position where I can afford a family. In five years' time,
I would like a family, so I'd need to be making
money to sustain that. I would like to actually
have a retirement plan. That would be great. When you're in this kind of career, do you ever really retire? I don't freaking know. And then I would like to
have created a will. (laughs) I don't know if that
counts as a financial goal, but I need a will. And then things for this year,
first steps: joint mortgage. So the fixed term on my
mortgage ends in September, and so Dan will be joining
me on that mortgage and then hopefully we'll be
able to get a bigger mortgage because there'll be two of
us on it instead of just me. And pay for wedding. Those are our financial goals this year. And then home. Home, home, home. Move out of London, question mark, living in Manchester, question mark, and then also I was like,
"Let's just do the dream thing." So I'd like a four-or-five-bedroom house. These are the bedrooms. There is a master bedroom. There is a kid's bedroom. The kids will be young,
they can share a bedroom. I shared with my sister until I was 10. A guest room, and then a room that is like office-slash-studio. And then things for this year, again, it's just literally
get that joint mortgage. Family! Family, family, family. So in five years' time,
I would like two kids. I would like to still be happy in my relationship with Dan. I would like to be able to emotionally and financially support this family, and I would like to go on lots of trips and do activities with them as a family. And then things that I can do this year: marry Dan and get my coil taken out. (laughs) And if you're wondering why I'm all like, in five years' time, I
want to have had two kids, it's because of the
butthole surgery thing, and there's a whole video about that, which I think is the Can I Get
Pregnant With a Stoma video on the Hannah Witton channel. Basically, surgery, having kids, doctors have told me I
need to complete my family before I can have my other surgery, and I need to have that other surgery sooner rather than later. And then ♪ Fun, fun, fun ♪ So in fun, in five years' time, this is just like how
I want my life to look. I wanna be going on
lots of girls' holidays. I want to be hosting
lots of dinner parties and board game nights with Dan. I want to be going on holidays
with Dan and our kids, and I want to still be
going to lots of theatre and seeing shows and things
because I love it so much. And then what can I be doing (clicks tongue) today,
this year: saving pots. I use Monzo, and they have
lots of different saving pots, and so I need saving pots for holidays and for shows (laughs) so
that I can afford them. Everything is about finances. And then plan 30th
celebrations with Manc girls. So there's a group of us,
a group of five of us, who we've all known each
other since we were born, and we'll all be turning 30 in 2022, and, I mean, I know it's
only 2020 right now, but we need to start planning and saving for whatever epic
shenanigans we come up with. I need to talk to the
girls about it (laughs) to see if they actually are keen, but come on, we'll be 30. It'll be fun. So that is generally how I
would like my life to look in five years' time, and then the things that I can be doing today-slash-this-year in order to make them happen, and then also I just
noticed some general trends across all of it. So a lot of it is about freedom, really, and in order to have the freedom to make a lot of these choices and to live the life that I want to live, it comes down to finances. I could have just put
in the first steps today for every single column 'make more money' because so much of it comes down to having the financial security in order to give yourself the freedom to do the things that you want to do. So then that all ties back
into the career section and working on all of those career goals so that I can provide for myself and for the life that I want. Or Dan's career can go really well and I can just live off him. That would be great. And yes, I talked about having kids soon and that kind of being
tied into health stuff. And then just generally
being less reliant on London for my career and my social life. I don't know if I'll be
living in London forever, but I would also be really sad to leave it because it's just so good,
but it's just so expensive, and the only other place that I feel like I could be
happy living in is Manchester, but I would still want to
come to London regularly and do work stuff in the
day and then see my friends and do theatre stuff in the evenings. Even though I'm from Manchester, I don't have many friends who
I still keep in touch with who are in Manchester, so it would be like moving to a new city where my only friends are
a small number of friends and my parents and my sister. All right, we got there. Thank you for watching. Please like this video if you liked it and let me know in the comments
