bad off-brand version of the bachelor well it's a good thing it's not and that i've never watched it my grandfather has always been rather cheeky with certain things drinking behind my grandmother's back sneaking food before dinner and worst of all dating not with himself he's very happy with my grandmother or so he claims but with others in the family if they were a certain age and weren't dating anyone he would sneak around and try to set them up with some people at a young age i thought that was hilarious he didn't mean any harm but some people didn't take it that way i didn't see what the big deal was he was trying to help them not force them or at least i didn't see the big deal until he did that to me my grandfather's rich and by rich i mean rich i mean he could buy an entire continent and still have money left over for the rest of his life to be honest no one should have that much money but no one in my family knows how we got that much money and whenever we asked him he would just laugh and just say don't worry about it a lot of family members made up stories or rumors about how he got that wealthy the most outlandish one was that he's secretly a god of fortune who granted himself the wealth but got kicked out of a really fancy council filled with other gods so that's how he's here it's a really good fantasy story premise but just a little unrealistic in the real world when grandfather caught wind of all the stories he just cheerfully told us to keep speculating it's entertaining to hear what we come up with anyways he came up to me one day and was like hey ben do you want to take a trip with me and everyone in the family has learned to never trust grandpa when he words things vaguely unfortunately no one was there to pull me away like i was hoping he also knew that i wasn't going to be doing anything either lucky me with no choice i told him sure he just slapped me on the back and led me to his car which magically was parked outside the house he normally keeps it in the garage he doesn't like putting in harm's way aka the outside so we both get in the car and he starts driving off it's oddly quiet between us which was an automatic red flag normally he'd put on the radio and sing along but no he was just silent with the exception of the car i was getting nervous at that point he didn't seem like he was in a bad mood but then why would he be so quiet i did eventually ask all he did was say don't worry your head off you'll see soon enough grandfather was a tough nut to crack so i knew questioning him further wouldn't yield any results so i didn't even bother the drive was close to an hour any time my grandfather wanted to bring me anywhere it was close by or local never farther than an hour he soon passes by a neighborhood that i don't recognize it's still in the same upper class area as my house but it's one i've never been to before there was a beautiful villa there my grandfather turned onto the villa's property and drove up the long driveway i asked him why we were there and what exactly he was planning but all he told me was that it was a secret and then i'd have fun that raised another red flag his definition of fun and everyone else's definition weren't synonymous with each other far from it actually he pulled up in front of the front door and told me to get out when i did i turned to look at him grandpa what exactly is going on i asked him he just started laughing maniacally before he floored the car speeding off no sounds or words left my mouth because not only did he literally floor the car he metaphorically floored me he just left me without a second thought at this giant house alone without knowing where i was i wanted to kick myself for actually getting in the car with him in the first place but there was nothing to be done at that point i didn't know where i was but i did have a general sense of direction not to mention i wanted to go back home so i could kick my grandfather's butt however before i could even take a step forward i heard the front door open i froze i didn't know what else to do i was pretty sure i was trespassing on private property which is illegal i wasn't ready to go to jail i couldn't handle it in jail all i could do was apologize and hope that once i explained i was very well abandoned by my grandfather they would show some mercy when i turned to look at the person i expected a mean looking person like the teacher from matilda or something but the person was actually a woman and she looked quite nice both literally and figuratively of course i knew firsthand that looks can be deceiving you can thank my grandfather for teaching that as soon as i saw her i immediately started apologizing trying to explain that i was left behind by my grandfather and that i'd immediately leave she didn't really do anything she just let me ramble on when i managed to get my side out she just kind of smiled and said ben we've been waiting for you and i was like what because who expects a pretty lady in a villa in the middle of nowhere to just say that i guess some people would think they'd hit the jackpot but i wasn't interested in whatever they were trying to sell me i just told her that i wasn't interested and that i'd either call my grandfather come pick me up or my mom she just laughed and said ben we know your grandfather rather charming he left you on purpose now i was even more confused why was my grandfather hanging out with a pretty woman in a villa in the middle of nowhere my grandmother was going to be real pissed when i told her this story she just laughed and said i'm sure you have a lot of questions don't worry we'll answer them as best we can and i was like hold up we and she just kind of looked at me and laughed well yeah she said your grandfather was surprising you right this is your surprise she led me into the villa in the entry there was a giant circular couch yes in the entryway not even my house had that and sitting on the couch were six other women all looking at me who were also very pretty i clammed up i didn't know what to do or say they were all just staring at me and smiling they almost looked like dolls i wasn't even sure if they were real at first the women who greeted me at the door smiled and said i'm kiana the others can introduce themselves at a later time and i was like why can't they introduce themselves now and she was like because you're going to be living with us now wait a minute hold the phone i was a 20 year old college student who was currently on summer break what in the world was my grandfather up to i calmly and rationally asked her what exactly that meant she said your grandfather set this up gosh dang it of course of course no wonder he seemed so lax about the entire thing i knew right then and there it was my turn to get set up with someone except this was above and beyond what he did with anyone else ever never before had he had seven people try to woo a family member at once i told her that it was very nice of my grandfather to do this but i had no interest and that they shouldn't waste their time she just kind of laughed and said you wouldn't want to disappoint your grandfather would you he's such a nice old man i wouldn't exactly call him nice a passive sneak is more like it i had no way to get home nor did i have a vehicle i could have called my mom or anyone actually but knowing my grandfather he got to them first and is currently making up some fake excuse as to why i'm not there or about how i'm not getting home in my position there wasn't much i could do there were seven of them they could have jumped me it's my luck they all seemed pretty nice at least on the surface i'd yet to actually know any of their names kiana gently grabbed my arm and led me over to the couch where the other women sat take your time to get to know them she said you'll be here until you pick a bride i took a double take and just stared at her i was like excuse me you seem like a wonderful person but i know that that did not just leave your mouth she only smiled at me and offered no other explanation she just said it'll be wonderful getting to know you the other women repeated what she said in varying degrees of individualism i excused myself and stepped outside making sure to close the door behind me my main goal was to call two people my mom and my grandfather i called my grandfather first he didn't pick up go figure i then called my mom she did answer and i don't think i've ever ranted onto her like i did that day my mom just listened to me go off about my grandfather and the ludicrousness of the entire situation when i was done she just gave a non-committal hum and said sorry hun there's nothing i can do like excuse me you're my mother of course you could do something she just told me to buck up and befriend them i didn't have to date any of them if i didn't want to then that brought up the question of do they want to date me would you actually want to if someone came up to you and said hey i'll pay you to woo this person and marry them highly unlikely my mom just wished me well and hung up i had no choice zero none i had to go back in there and at least socialize with them i didn't want them to think it was their fault no it was my grandfather's for setting up such a ridiculous ploy so i gathered myself and walked back into the house they were still sitting where they were just idly chatting with each other when they all gradually spotted me the talking ceased i just cleared my throat i wasn't that used to being around so many women at once i managed to say hi my name's ben and i look forward to getting to know all of you i'm not sure how much of that i meant but i needed to get through it they all just smiled at me and stood up at the same time all seven of them said hi ben i knew i was going to regret it and eventually i did
