the million dollar question is why haven't I found anybody if I got even 50 pounds for every time I got asked I bet I can't believe you're not married I'd be seriously wealthy you want to ask me if we're gonna get married in the next month or so I couldn't I couldn't tell you right now it's hard to kind of find somebody with a good blend of east and west if you're not already if you're young single and Muslim finding love is getting harder and harder at the Birmingham Central Mosque they think they have the answer Britain's biggest Muslim marriage bureau it has over a thousand people on its books and mr. Harkin mr. Razak are the matchmakers we try to make the match pickings for all the Muslim community from all over the England Montes to London any age could be hundreds of couples I have matched in my 15 20 years Korea in the mosque the marriage bureau offers young Muslims a greater say in their choice of partner very different from the traditional arranged marriage where the parents of them make all the key decisions I just tell them to bring their parents also we try to educate them look is the kids they are going to spend the life together which is their life not your life let them talk let them choose a partner that's what we do the bureau works with families who are often worried about sliders interfering in such private matters for four months we were given unique access to this very private world of young Muslims looking for love so loser are you man you watch Prison Break great [Music] run for the forum you're looking for a partner yes oh you're the hide there but what kind of person looking for bold with no hair whatever twenty-nine-year-old professionals Lena and Samina have come from London to meet mr. Huck they want him to find them a suitable partner the youngsters now does the boys oh yeah she should be smart looking and she should be white each thing like that the height very important yes then go for a hide for many young Muslims finding a partner is no easy task qualifications height job prospects and even complexion a high on the list of demands and then there's the question of nationality would they want a husband from Britain or from abroad the new DeWine if it wasn't for Pakistan I would prefer a difficult case for mr. Huck and one that's increasingly common for professional women like Lena and Samina educated Muslim men are in short supply but men also tend to marry at a younger age not good news when you're pushing 30 [Music] the marriage bureau is used as much by parents as by young Muslims and often the two generations come together in the same field as the young lady 30 year old Thea's has come to the bureau with his mom she's already worked through her list of contacts and is desperate for more names if she was back home in Pakistan help would have come from a wider network of family and friends certain things hobbies interests somebody easy to get on with I suppose somebody definitely the six-foot-tall is educated and is British citizen is it okay if we give them your number to them or you can have their number but my parents would want it to be educated to at least college longer she was from England and she could speak English I'll be more than happy with not really she's 30 years of age she's five foot six inch tall sends a core interest Piazza's mom has been given a number of contacts and she's already on the case with his own business lots of ambition and the bureau's seal of approval fiestas few problems finding a bride with that age with that qualification I had a lot of sisters on my profiles because she says up to age 30 you know what I mean and he wasn't asking he wasn't too much demanding also on his profile you say education Annie he's graduated but he said Annie but I've given him all the educated girls you know [Music] Muslims of all nationalities turned to the bureau for help Sarah is of Egyptian origin and she's looking for a husband from a seminar background he must be religious and willing to respect her career aspirations for 29 year-old Sarah finding an Egyptian husband has been difficult the British Egyptian community is small and scattered around the country how long have you been looking did you say Jordanian or Libyan was he hot it is Jordanian that's what he says the place of birth is Libya Jordanian with over 15 years experience the matchmakers believe that Sarah's list of demands are too unrealistic you don't want a prince leave what do you think mr. OHS actress do you think she wants a princess really life goes on I mean you got a give and take of it you can't quite find a perfect husband in life you got to sacrifice someone along the line somebody has to sacrifice you have to give and take in life you have to give a lot to take a little that's what life is all about mr. Razak is convinced that Sarah needs to be more flexible can she really compromise over her choice of husband [Music] at the Muslim marriage bureau in birmingham sarah has come to meet the matchmakers mr. Huck and mr. Razak Sarah is looking for a British Egyptian the matchmakers think she's too fussy you can't find a perfect husband in life you have to give and take in life you have to give a lot to take a little that's what life is all about as hard you know cuz I'll hook what our education and qualification I can't find the right person not only does mr. Huck have to find an Egyptian he has to find one who meet Sara's high standards she is well educated highly ambitious and works in the City of London I work for reinsurance broker and we do mainly reinsurance but we'll say insurance so I do some braking and also business developments as well every few months I travel I love it yeah I like traveling business class and staying in 5-star hotels Sara waits to hear from the marriage bureau they have very few Arab men on their books and even fewer Egyptians but she's not the only challenge in case the bureau faces the Muslim community is highly diverse and the matchmakers often encounter problems of nationality language and age indefinite no what are your politics eylem i am i said asylum you might have a difficulty to find a sister for you in a part and life partner for you and cause what it is most of the girls what we got here are British and they want to marry with the British boys who's got a job in a death settle down and something like that top secret most of them are looking for someone Pakistani and who speaks buddhu and I don't speak a lot Pakistani so that rules out a lot of people I'm actually 40 40 this is your own choice yeah macGruber the mosque to find a partner for yourself it is a few days after Sarah's visit to the mosque mr. Huck is talking to someone who he thinks could be a potential match I was born here in Birmingham actually in southern Coldfield but I lived a couple of years in Egypt and then living now in London yeah a British offer [ __ ] mo is training to be an accountant and has been looking for a wife with what he calls the right mentality a moderate Muslim with a modern outlook maybe they're different than the one back there in Egypt it may be the one here is like she's educated all that she from London and it's not a matter of Education it's like the the mentality I'm telling you about its life as mom yes but you have to see that force you do you the person to oh yeah if you meet the person then you'll find out about the mentality and all that you can't judge from the pictures I can't judge you from there of course mr. Huck passes on Sarah's details tomorrow Egyptian Warren is like interesting because she lives in London and I'm in there in London and I she might be like she was raised here so the mentality is different than the ones back there in Egypt I don't know the ones here like the Egyptians were like how do mentality works so and she's in London so she I'm living unless you eat them yeah that's the point all right Perez can you ring sister Sarah and find out you know we've got one brother who is interested and we just filled with ropal then we can ring her and see if they can she wants to meet him in London if they wanna meet in London way they become only million La Nina in their own house with somebody present enough or if they do control arrange the first meeting in the mosque is up to them but I prefer to have a first reading here [Music] in London Lina and her friend Samina are waiting to hear from the marriage bureau at the same time they're also exploring other ways of finding a Muslim partner I don't see anything wrong with an arranged marriage how my parents did it I don't think I could do it I think I think they met on the day I I couldn't do that no but for me it's quite important to get to know a person so I don't want to say yes I want to just get married put someone in the picture and then find out what this person is about I would rather get to know something today Lina is off to a networking event for young Muslim professionals that's simple so clubbing and drinking are off-limits for Muslims and these events offer an opportunity to meet like-minded people all right and you know Jackie let's do this let's roll [Music] mr. Huck doesn't have a problem with young Muslims networking but he thinks it should be done through the mosque that it'd be this one we are running we try to have the community alhamdulillah we do arrange the first meeting in the Central Mosque in the house of Allah they sit there they tell the truth but other businesses what they're running that the marriage bureaus or whatever or internet or what are ties to me there's a business they are not helping the community they are not helping a Muslim Ummah now they are making money from them to me that's wrong [Music] on the flyer is a charity event there's a same networking on it but our eyes will be in London Lena and Samina are trying to find a husband there at a networking event for young Muslims at a local art gallery a few minutes into the event they are both attracting plenty of male attention but the problem is the women outnumber the men a typical scenario for educated Muslim women this is good for guys to come to to meet girls but not not the other way around I think yeah but for the for the event and they should bring more boys finding husbands for Muslim women is a particular concern for mr. hawk he believes the bureau serves a vital role in steering Muslims away from what he calls Western decadence we are running this married beautiful 15 16 years now alhamdulillah obviously because what was happening a lot of the parents were taking the kids forcing them to get married in Pakistan and all that and they all end up with divorces and the kids are upset the lives are upset the parents everything that's why I humbly in a Muslim community we're trying to run the marriage bureau otherwise if I don't do that where are they gonna find the partners they may go some of the wrong ways [Music] the marriage bureau have finally found Sarah a match and she's getting ready for a meeting that may change her life [Music] the first time sarah has been trying to find a British Egyptian husband for the last nine years I think we're both gonna be quite nervous I don't plan to ask a lot of questions or overemphasize any sort of area that's gonna make you judge me sort of thing oh that's really important to her therefore you know I'm not suitable it's just safe for that way I think I want someone who's going to you and the able to look after me I think that's what girls want someone who's going to be romantic someone who's getting to sort of listen to your views and what you wanted and be quite sensitive obviously you know it goes both ways [Music] the man Sarah is going to meet today is moe a 30 year old trainee accountant it's not a matter of education it's like the the mentality I'm telling you about its loafers for over eight years Moe has been trying to find the perfect partner finding someone it's really difficult yeah it's it's not easy it's not like you're searching Amazon or Ebay and you know oh my god here is the product and here's the specification it's very complicated oh it's the idea of a like we have a common language which is like we can speak English Arabic and we have a common religion and we both live in London so it's like easy to communicate [Music] so do you think he's marriage material well yeah it sounds like it I've not even met him or seen him sounds exciting missing HM no hunting anything I've been till he's very good that King say if that's not career than I I'll be very upset if you ever told me about [Music] well Lincoln's long how are you saying you're the big moment has finally arrived for Moe and Sarah as they meet for the first time you can read the profile post you can go through you did have introduced them now it's up to them now they'll speak to each other exchange protocol whatever and then if they like each other dinosaur for them to kill you you're multitasking could be one TV are now on the mobile and you're doing cooking and you're studying and watching a TV show right there are girls like that are you at this time but I'm not that tough at all how can you work for nine hours or 10 hours and then read something what weekends weekends are weekend you have to have fun having made the introduction mr. Hawk leaves Moe and Sarah to find out more about each other where did you work before you start with your exams that's good the question are the teeth I used to teach a level accounting so far Moe and Sarah are on safe ground education and travel I'm like a normal guy but in basically I enjoy going to new places you know like new places seeing new people after I've done a lot of traveling I've enjoyed being raised here and obviously it's very cosmopolitan in London and it's what's going on and we've got the opportunity obviously here to travel a lot to enjoyed that they both seem to share similar interests but it gets trickier as they move on to the work-life balance I found your intensive own career orientates as well I don't just want a career that's meaningless and everyone else a lot of people do the same thing as me and I haven't added anything but to me that's not good enough really you like you can't work and raise a child or you have to like dedicate some time it's all about time so what type are you workaholic and you into your career yeah what about the religious aspect you know like are you super religious you're like doing five prayers per day and stuff like that and you're you don't go clubbing would you like your partner's to be like a moderate or more open-minded where you would want him like an identical copy of you I think everyone even to be identical to me or want to aspire to be like me because I think that I don't think that I am extreme in any way I think that I practice this long the way it should obviously you know I can't and the arrogant like the way I practice my religion but I think it is correct and you know I think we're ordered not to drink and to pray five times a day and I think those things that you know I think that's correct to follow that sort of lifestyle ain't thing that strokes this is now becoming more difficult mo is not as religious as Sarah he's more liberal about practicing his faith I was married I wouldn't be able to handle it if my husband was going out copying and was drinking yeah even if it was outside the house y knew he was drinking I wouldn't be able I wouldn't be happy with that you know whether I had kids or not but you know I date minder for guys doing certain activities now but he's got the intention to change because you know he's got the faith and the belief and the knowledge that all he wants to learn you know what is right and what is wrong maybe I think people should sort of regret it a bit the extent of you know they should realize that they have to repent for anything they've done that done this now again sort of you know what's being prescribed for very good answer it's that I wish I've read these answers in my exams you know it's lucky Wow yeah it's a very good answer I could debate that Sara and Mo have different religious views she's a practicing Muslim he is more liberal can they really find any common ground [Music] the marriage bureau have matched sarah with moe a British Egyptian but their first meeting has not gone well I do clubbing I do everything trust me I'm like a normal guy the two have very different religious views and not enough in common to get on a normal girl who's ambitious and she wants to achieve something in life and she has some moral and religion aspects and she's I don't think she's flexible I believe life goes to stages so if I go clubbing this doesn't make me a bad guy and if I don't pray this doesn't make me an evil guy and if I pray five times a day it doesn't make me oh this guy's going to heaven for sure so it's not about praying or going to the clubs or having one beer or two beers makes you a good or bad person so I'm more flexible I'm not as religious as her at all and I can't argue with her it's her point of view catching up with a couple of her friends the next day Sara tells them about her meeting at the mosque yesterday yeah quite rude and arrogant he wanted to challenge me on everything I think my standards in terms of I'm looking for is but the a lot higher I just felt I still deserve someone that was gonna treat me better anything good about me he looks okay but to be honest if he doesn't have anything else then there's nothing there on paper mo and Sara looked like a potential match they're both professional ambitious and have British Egyptian roots but mr. Hawk knows that matchmaking is no exact science unfortunately they didn't work out what about the religious aspect you know like are you super religious you're like doing five prayers per day and stuff like that and you're you don't go clubbing their thinking was different to me she didn't prefer him because he was a little bit show-off like whatever but that's a part of the life in him you see each other sometimes you work something he doesn't handle look [Music] but mr. Huck has high hopes for thirty-year-old fia's the marriage bureau has given phases mum a number of contacts and she is already on the case [Music] do you know how that money but he still want us to talk and this one cuz he [ __ ] Antonia I see a community but I don't know someone who started for Bill Graham coin a darling I'm thirty years old my hair is disappearing you know what a lot to get my clients in but you can't rush these things you know it's not like my dad said it's not a handbag or something I think you know the minutes it's a lifetime commitment I've always in my heart of heart for that my parents would have a big say in who I get married to and from my kind of past experience and they have been right most of times even though I want to admit if the girl and a boy they don't know each other all right the marriage won't be successful the must know each other the background that it was no each of the habit each other's way of thinking nice that's what you want for fairs of course not the Queen mind me you serious wonder some need for you one for you but they can be only tighten it Kanaka APR are you gonna tell me what's in each and every saturday upon a punjab peoples a unit isn't in an ideal world a lot my parents to live with me but only God knows if I'll get home with my wife and my wife will get on with them so like many young British Muslims fierce has to find a balance between his parents aspirations and his own more westernized outlook a few days later fierce and his mum are back at the bureau to meet a young woman and her family from the last week in the mosque gave a couple numbers tomorrow for potential partners and my mom's kind of spoken to one of the families and we're having the initial me in here so often the girls arriving with a mom and dad and I'm here with my mom have you had a chance to speak to her at all or no no I haven't spoken to my mom spoken to mom and got the lowdown and whatnot but this is the initial meeting what do you know about her son huh just quite basic details really she's father I she's done an LLB in law how are you feeling bit nervous but I'm sure after the initial kind of five minutes that I'll be all right so mom's quite encouraging yeah she can't wait till the day I get married so she's not really too concerned here is I think it's me is 4c really is she quite excited I think she gets excited by the thought of it's like she's she said to my sister-in-law's a couple of times how good I am with my nephews and she says she longs to see the day when I play with my own kids so I don't know maybe she thinks I'll make a good father fears and his mum go off for their meeting they'll just want to have a meeting with parents and the kids both of them will have a meeting each other introduce each other talk to each other the country and then it will come back to us and let's talk well they don't make another run yeah another meeting second time or what can be no friend I don't know my hope is okay so I think something we might know he's a good lad he's very good very easy thing you know it's not fussy isn't good any conditions or anything like that you know Emily is very nice why are you keeping all that so you know we're in Charlotte Bella the meeting with FIA's and the young woman is coming to an end mr. hawk is keen to find out how it went the girl was quite talkative which is quite good but they seemed like quite a good family she told me what our brothers and sisters done and what she's got to initial meeting seems to be fine it was a bit nerve-wracking at first it thinks is for wrong what you think your hair is an issue as to why you're single Oh most definitely that's that's the sticking point it it's reseed you know I want more my hair there while I can see you know later that evening see ours has had time to reflect on his meeting with the young woman while there was initial attraction he feels she may be too traditional it's hard to kind of find somebody with a good blend of east and west if you know me you get a lot of girls your the homely type again you just want to sit at home with the in-laws then you get the others were three Western eyes one holidays abroad every other couple of months it's just trying to find somebody the right blend see ours is prepared to wait for the right blend with a well-paid job and his own flat he feels he's a good catch first I was living in a council flat which I've done up quite nice exactly I wanted it but the council fight is always a councilperson I mean neighbors were always on there on the garland what Martin is causing too much trouble and it was all it's one of the things I've always wanted to do is leaving a bit of an exclusive area and like that's quite nice yeah and you've got to practice it yeah it was empty when I moved in I don't know my friends think I'm a big guy yeah I mean touch with my feminine side as I say but yeah yeah twenty-nine-year-old Lena registered with the marriage bureau a few days ago she's looking for an independent minded professional with a modern attitude the question is why have you not found anyone yet I've achieved a lot in my life I got a good career I do a lot with myself and I've got a lot to be proud of but one thing everyone focuses on is why are you still single why have you not met someone instead of getting rated that little bit just for achieving what I have in my life everyone focuses on one thing why aren't you married yet and you know what I don't know how to answer that question like shall I go away and write a list of flaws down about myself and then come back to it and be like oh maybe it's this or maybe it's that I get all depressed and I don't know I just am single [Music] at the marriage bureau mr. Huck is busy matchmaking he thinks Lina and fears could be right for each other fairs under Lima he hasn't got any conditions education doesn't matter to him whether she's our level or a level I have a degree Lena even she's not worried about education or anything Lana her vision and what she has written on the form is Carrie ambition make money money money you just wanna build his own business you know what I mean very decent blow were you dissing Kate they don't get along at along I will just give the details for them yeah what are you done that let's see what happened well we wait till Friday and we'll give them a ring and find out if they I tried to cut in touch with each other or not so then we go from there photos phone numbers and emails have been exchanged Lena and FIA's planned to meet each other in London I don't think I'm asking for too much when it comes to looking for a partner someone who's a bit interesting someone who's a go-getter and something that's probably important to me is someone who can look after himself Lena is getting ready for her first meeting with fears she's keeping her outfit simple and modest I won't go bling yeah I mean it does I'm not one of them girls who takes hours to get ready I'm a bit of a 10-minute girl as long as I look presentable and modestly nice then that's fine if they're expecting anything more than that then not the right person I do feel about 1134 it well it's I kind of met them one girl through the mosque last week my mother was there as oh okay but I don't know I've got a good feeling about this one at a restaurant in London Lina is waiting for PS chaperoned by her cousin Marni [Music] I'm just taking it as it comes really a bit of a blank slate at the moment so let's see what happens a little bit I'm already nervous but more clueless than anything so not much to say yet are you glad that you've got money here with you yeah yeah yeah I don't think I would do it without someone here I use like my brother so better to have that just in case you've tried anything right [Music] fear Selena finally meet up with the introductions made Lena's cousin leaves them to continue with their chat it's I know maybe because the parents aren't sitting here through the mosket a lot of people do meet at the mosque with the family yeah and I don't know with a girl's father sitting there or the brother the meeting seems to have started well they both have a lot in common you know on Friday I went there to meet one of the girls that they kind of put us in touch with and because my mother always goes on about my hair stars and even you know the guys organising the whole thing even they agreed they go you know what you should get your hair cut like a normal and it may be slight partying and I don't know maybe if I come into this side partying would you like guys inside partners no my mom's never been keen on my westernized ways I've always been quite sporty and I was a tomboy growing up and you know we think differently to our parents exactly we import up here you know they've got different colleges and as much as we respectable when you're looking at someone else's habits and lifestyle it's and we're different you can't expect everybody to be exactly like you'd you know I mean well don't be a bore in place if everybody's exact answer I don't know you gotta accept you gotta be able to adapt to different in Laurens Lina and fear seemed to have hit it off they share similar views about family and culture has the Bureau worked it's much making magic I was quite nervous at first I was like I wonder what she is that the conversation going to flow he's a nice guy he's quite easygoing quite relaxed so I mean that made it easier for both of us we only spoke for a while so I think we'd have to take a bit further as in me up a few times initial kind of attraction kind of thing and you have been able to talk to each other yeah definitely she's really he's a working guy he's cool he's he's on a level but if you want to ask me if we're gonna get married in the next month or so I couldn't I couldn't tell you right now sorry I've been concerned about the fact that this has been you know his mum told him to go to the mosque and so I'm a bit wary of mothers boys can't knock him for that no parental advice is nothing wrong with that as long as you don't allow them to take control of the whole situation and every mother is gonna do that for their child anyway to make us some up decision is somebody's mark on the photo said look thinking about this girl or not I'll find the answer with definitely yeah she's really pretty [Music] in the days after their meeting at a restaurant fia's sends Lena a string of text messages and emails he seems to be in a rush and she's feeling overwhelmed he asked me for my month of birth my date of birth my year of birth all in separate messages and I answered him and he said right I won't forget your birthday he seems to have a good heart but I don't know him and that he doesn't know me I'm quite happy to have a chat and if sparks fly after that then call but if I can't have that what's the point even trying although Lena would prefer to move at a slower pace she eventually agrees to Sophia's for a second time just going to water park to me Lena and some of her friends mostly we're gonna do some activities doesn't drive a speedboat Leena has invited her friend Samina to come along as well as her cousin Marnie [Music] whilst they all enjoy the day out it's clear that the original spark between Fiat and Lima has gone I have time to talk to him when we were alone and stuff and it's very just Q&A Q&A it was a conversation and I think it'd be the same if the others weren't there he's in a rush and it's quite obvious he's quite clearly said he's not fast about getting to know someone he just wants to get married literally he just wants to get married I think people need to clarify at the start you know and what kind of time frame they're looking at to get married as well a lot of people don't know thing that the other person will understand but so somebody like myself I'm most definitely interested in getting mode quite soon sooner the better really but somebody Marlena I think she's a bit more like she wants to take things easy get to know the best he literally is very urgently wanting to get married and I can't just say yes I drive this car yes I have this phone yes sir and that's that's not really gonna do anything for me when I kind of get to know someone it's all a bit material I think the you know basically had her cousin and her friend with her so there was the three of them and there was me I don't know it's it's hard to make conversation when there's three people that know each other and then you you as the outside especially when you're trying to build a relationship I think it would have been better if it was just me and Lena but you know being a Muslim and single you have to kind of take certain things into consideration days after the second meeting fee Oz and Lena have both drifted apart I understand the importance of marriage but I would rather be 50 single and very happy then pressured into something and very depressed in a in a relationship that I'm just not happy with just because everyone's talking about biological clocks and sell-by dates it's just not gonna work on me my future is unpredictable still at the moment I'm single I'm going to carry on enjoying my life and you know hopefully something will happen FIA's still wants a bride but has changed his mind about where to look three months ago he was sure that she needed to be a British Muslim love issues from England and she could speak English now after a number of meetings set up by the marriage bureau he's exploring other options the whole idea of marrying somebody from here I think it takes too long to to kind of get to know somebody so I've kind of spoken to the mother and father of the explained to that I should go to Pakistan together as a little holiday for her and entertain the idea of finding me somebody there [Music] the chances are very slim of me finding somebody here who's gonna take the backseat most of the women I've met here that want to take the FONSI they want to be the driver of the car as such whereas I think I need somebody who's more of the passengers and advises me of the best route to go in life yeah talk this down here I come for mr. Huck the news that fierce is looking for a wife in Pakistan has come as a complete shock he's worried that all too often men retreat to the comfort of traditional Brides from abroad you want to get our boys married in Pakistan I remember daughters to get married in England they're British but they don't care about the boys who are British that's wrong in his view these traditional relationships can have disastrous consequences for the Muslim community if the boys and girls have been forced by the parents or blackmail emotionally blackmailed okay then I don't believe in that at all because those marriages end up in divorce is very bad result on them [Music] sit on the tables meanwhile throughout the year mr. Huck and Mister Razak will have many ups and downs matchmaking is no exact science despite the knocks they remain resolute about the vital role the marriage bureau plays they see their work as a higher calling a duty to preserve the essence of muslim marriage tonight they're organizing an open day at the mosque for Muslims new to the bureau as long as God has given me I will carry on and as long as the community needs this service I will carry on providing them this service I'm playing a big role in this communities the youngsters nowadays bring together if I don't do that where are they gonna find apartments they may go some of the wrong ways unlikely as it may seem these two middle-aged men are at the vanguard of a Muslim marriage revolution for them the Bureau offers a third way a space between the traditional arranged marriage and the Western dating scene the matchmakers seem to have found a way to ensure the long-term survival of their community as well as meeting the needs of young Muslims looking for love [Music]
