Mower hard to start like a dead battery

hey john here again so i got this craftsman uh dropped off and uh i'm going to pick it up it says uh just bought a brand new battery which looks new for 60 something dollars and it won't start uh he says he thinks the starter i'm saying i don't think so um so we're just gonna just roll it out here we're gonna go through the symptoms here i already think i know what it is brand new battery all right you see how it's it's pausing it wants to it wants to go through but what that is obviously ain't the starter um but what it is is the overhead valves the valves get out of whack they're really easy to adjust i'll show you how easy in a second let me put this camera down just one adjustment on these valves and he'll be good to go here so hold on a second all right so just unplug your lights take your hood off no tools required get the appropriate socket take these four bolts off and uh expose the valves no problem it's actually loose um so i run this all the time i'm sure this is what it is you probably didn't even need to get a new battery but too late now goodbye uh so you want to save this gasket if you can't you know you can use a uh looks like it's going to come off our tv silicone you know your own gasket maker but i'm going to try to save this sucker it's being a little bit challenging in the corner here all right so uh we're gonna have to find top dead center on this uh machine and how we're gonna do that so we're gonna take this spark plug out and rotate it by hand up here wow it is this is all loose you can see that up there these are all loose maybe somebody's been here i don't know well they're not loose they're just the thing is loose these look tight i don't have to look at that but uh so get get uh there was oh get the spark plug out and uh we're gonna rotate this top of this engine until well i'll show you hold on a second all right so we're gonna get yourself a couple tools here a screwdriver and a sports plug out find top dead center all right all the way to the end i guess so if you get on the machine right now with the spark plug out i'm sure this thing will crank right over like no problem zing zing yeah all right so stick a screwdriver into the hole and just rotate the top of the engine see how it goes in right then it comes back out right there's top dead center see both valves are moving a little bit and your screwdrivers out so if you go that's all you got to do is make sure it's out and these are i can already tell you they're too tight so that's what's going on so we gotta get an allen wrench and i think it's a 10. you hold well i'll show you again let me go get the proper tools all right so you get yourself uh 10 and loosen this up do both of them right and uh back off this set screw here so we want four thousand a feeler gauge if you don't have a feeler gauge uh in a pinch if you wanna do this now you can get away with uh look i don't have four thousand you can get away with uh just using a a business card or something close to that where the hell is the four there's a five there's a six it'll be damned didn't even look like it's missing you know i got another set that's weird as yeah i'm missing it i'll be right back well can't find a four but we'll use a five it's gonna be close enough uh because i think a six will be too too thin or uh two so we'll use a five so we'll loosen this up right see how this is loose now and in between here and there just snug it up that's it right there right that's a five so get some in and out of there then you just uh hold this nut into place and take your allen and uh torque it down you gotta hold that nut though that nut will want to move and that's it right just do the bottom one thicker and loosen that yeah there is a tolerance for intake and exhaust but i set them both at the same at four zero zero point zero zero four and i've never had a problem and that's all it is it's just a little see how i'm just turning the nut just a hair just a little bit snug that's it hold it don't move it that's all there is to it these were pretty tight so they just get out of whack by themselves that's good now i can start this up without the valve cover but i'm confident it'll start so all right i'm not gonna put the valve cover gasket on yet just because uh i might need a a c here of an adjustment right we'll see let's see let's see what happens yep no problem i don't know why it started it took so long to start maybe it was just uh hadn't been started in a while but i don't like the way this thing's flopping around so that's uh that's it that's all there is to it there's uh no nothing uh so so if you still had a bit of a hesitation like it it catches in a certain spot then just loosen up just a again it's we're talking paper thin here so what was that noise all right so just putting it at five thousandths of an inch uh did the trick and the tolerance on these little things you know like i said once you get it in there and you uh you do your adjustment with the big nut just a bit of a drag tighten it up and that's all there is to it it's really that simple nothing to it so let's put this sucker back on call this a fix no no special tools well i don't know an allen wrench if you want to call it a special tool and a 10 inch millimeter and a screwdriver uh that's all it takes common tools and that's it let me just put this on make sure it starts one more time and uh [Music] all right work her down that's it all right let's see here plug everything's good it should start right up there you have it folks easy peasy all right
