thanks for hopping on a little early we're gonna have some fun today and get you ready for service but my name is caitlin and i'm jerica and like caitlyn said we're super excited that you are here with us so take a second go ahead let us know where you're watching from it's always cool to see where people are watching from especially on sunday mornings and when it's somewhere cool that we've never heard of like last service we had someone that was watching in a small town in north carolina that we never heard of but it was still cool to be able to get to connect with them so make sure you take a second do that so that we can shout you out and learn more about you yeah definitely we have people from all over i think we have one lady that actually watches from italy every single weekend actually actually have a new song that we're doing right this weekend it's going to be a good song so i hope you're ready our pastor wayne is in town our lead pastor from our new york campus is with us as well continuing in our moving life forward series that we started last weekend and then we're going to play a fun game here in a second we're going to hear about some exciting kids life stuff that's coming up throughout service today so you picked a great day to be in church with us today yeah you did another thing that we're doing today is we're taking communion so take a second if you're at home go ahead grab some crackers or some bread or water or juice whatever you have in your home to go ahead and observe this time if you're a believer whatever you can that represents the body of christ yeah and the blood of christ you know we have not taken communion together it's been since easter it's been such a long time so make sure you go ahead grab your elements and get those ready so i actually am going to invite my friend amanda meneses to hop on with me for just a second she leads an incredible life group and she's going to tell us a little bit about it but hello amanda how are you i'm great good so good hey thanks for being with us why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself maybe the life group you lead what campus you're a part of all that stuff i am amanda meneses my husband is pastor mundo meneses aka the latino i love it we are here at houston levee the majority of the time but i do love to get to tag along with him to go to other locations sometimes and see people i don't get to see all the time that's so fun okay so tell us about your life group a little bit maybe the name and then kind of what you guys do in the life our group is called flourish moms uh this season we are launching as flourish we were formerly mops at the live church absolutely we're going on a limb and doing our own thing and we're super excited about it we have a lot of opportunities for moms this season we're going to be doing whole group meeting type flows in two different environments one smaller one larger that's awesome and those are flourish in the park and flourish at home cool and then we also are doing a fit and flourish mom challenge for us to get in shape physically as well as some mental aspects of that challenge too which are going to be awesome and our final opportunity is a bible study for moms our flourish bible study will meet thursdays in a couple of weeks we launch and that's going to actually have a night and a 1 30 afternoon option so that moms who work can join in for that opportunity that's so amazing exciting yeah so you have like every option i feel like for any mom's schedule there's an option for you to be a part of this life or virtual options or in person and there's even potential for a hybrid type model where you can you may come in person to one meeting and not to others that's amazing wow man i'm not even a mom but i want to be a part of your life hey maybe one day that's right one day that's right who knows well hey why don't you why don't you tell everybody who's watching maybe they're say they're on the the fence of joining the life group what would you say to somebody if they're like i don't know if i want to join a life group how would you how would you encourage them being a part of a life group what would you say to them well for one i know for some it can be a step of courage to jump into a group of people you do not know and in this case it may be entirely virtual you may be jumping onto a zoom with a group of people you've never met before but i can definitely say when you sow that seed of faith god is going to honor it in your life through relationships and as i think we all would say in this season more than any before i think god has confirmed in all of our hearts the deep need we have for people and the beauty of life groups is a small intimate environment that really becomes like a family to you in our larger life church family it's a support group that we all need in our lives yeah that's great okay so if somebody wants to sign up for your group or any life group so good to be in church today i want to welcome everybody who's watching online we've got a bunch of people online a bunch of people here at houston levy and all of our locations come on one big happy family in the house of god today david said i was glad when they said to me let's go to the house of the lord and there's just nothing like being in church and experiencing the presence of god being online i know many people have to remain online for this season but i'm so glad to see faces and uh so glad to see people in church come on this is what we're called to do gather together and worship him so welcome everybody we're going to have what we call our ministry time during the next psalm the team's going to lead us in another song and it's our chance to maybe take another step in our worship and this weekend we're opening the altars at every one of our locations as an opportunity to come pray and man i love that i'm i'm uh i'm an alter guy i think about my life and how i was raised up in the things of god uh as a teenager coming back into church and how many times i came down to the front and knelt at an altar and just had an encounter with god of course you can build an altar anywhere because an altar is a place of sacrifice a place of worship and you know you can do that anywhere but there's nothing like being in the presence of god with other believers in the house of god and having an altar experience of course it's the front of the stage and a place for you to come and kneel so during this next song we're going to do that this weekend give you a chance to come and pray and kneel at the altar we're also going to have communion and the elements are on every seat or every seat back and just look around and you'll find them they are the disposable type where you pull the the top off and there's the bread and then you know you pull the second layer off and there's the cup and just an opportunity for you right where you are to experience communion we're not going to do it all together but an opportunity for you to remember the price that jesus paid for you i've been thinking about this word hope all weekend and i know you can look around at all the different things that we're facing as a country and our city and maybe some of the things that you're walking through in your personal life or in your family and so many people have lost hope but here's the good news today everybody that in jesus we always have hope for for tomorrow and there's always hope for there's always hope for what's to come i know it may be real challenging for you and there may be some things that are happening right now that just are so discouraging and so defeating off oftentimes you just turn on the tv and you can get real discouraged by the things that you see but let's remember as believers we're citizens of a bigger kingdom we're citizens of a greater kingdom and one of the most powerful things about the kingdom of god is hope it's having hope for the future let me read you a couple of verses and we're going to pray have a moment of prayer and then we're going to have that other song and communion and the altar listen to what isaiah said isaiah chapter 40. isaiah said do you not know have you not heard the lord is the everlasting god the creator of the ends of the earth he will not grow tired or weary [Music] and his understanding no one can fathom he gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak even youths even young people grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall but those who hope in the lord i love that some translations use the use the word weight those who wait on the lord those who hope in the lord will renew their strength they will soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary they will walk and not be faint come on in that a great passage today you might feel a little weak you might feel a little weak you might feel a little tired come on but we hope in the lord and what does he do he renews our strength let's pray together everybody as we go into this alter moment as we go into this communion moment this worship moment can we lift our hands all together everybody all together as a sign of prayer is a sign of surrender as a sign of worship we're lifting our hands to the king of all kings and the lord of all lords as we wait on him as we hope in him even in the next 60 seconds watch how he will renew your strength father god thank you for meeting us at the altar thank you for meeting us as we have a communion moment and we remember the price that you paid for us as we worship you thank you for moving in our midst and renewing us and encouraging us we pray as a church for our city and our country we believe you that you're moving that there's an awakening that there's a revival happening that there's renewal happening in jesus name lord we thank you for moving in our lives and we pray it all in the name of jesus and everybody said amen amen come on let's [Music] what's up everybody how you guys doing out there today why don't we make some noise for everybody that's joining us online at our other locations all throughout tennessee make some noise right now everybody in the chat let's do it i'm so excited to be doing week two of our teaching series called moving life forward which is actually a mantra of our church but over the next couple of weeks we're going to be doing a deep dive through the old testament book called joshua the book of joshua is about transition and it's about trajectory and it's the story of the jewish people leaving their bondage and heading toward their promise and the challenges that happen in between we're going to learn a whole lot and we're going to grow spiritually as we look at what it takes for us to move our lives forward in this modern day context and so today we're gonna dive into chapter three and if you have your bibles those of you joining us online and if you have your bibles now i would love to direct you to the word of the lord that we're going to get into today joshua chapter 3 and verse 1 says then joshua arose early in the morning and they set out for from shateen and they came to the jordan he and all the people of israel and lodged there before they passed over at the end of three days the officers went through the camp and commanded the people as soon as you see the ark of the covenant of the lord your god being carried by the levitical priests then you shall set out from your place and follow it yet there shall be a distance between you and it about two thousand cubits in length do not come near to it in order that you may know the way you shall go for you have not passed this way before then joshua said to the people consecrate yourselves for tomorrow the lord will do wonders among you let's pray together father thank you for every person has gathered here in this building and at our locations and online all around our nation and around the world would you allow the holy spirit to convict our hearts and allow us to hear what you'd have us to to to hear god we're asking you in the name of jesus to direct our steps so that we can move our lives forward more committed and completely following you in jesus name everybody said now there have been a few times in my life where i've noticed some strange behavior eating lunch or dinner or breakfast with a couple of friends of mine i've noticed that there are certain people that have a particular illness while they eat now my family and i when we get together to eat we we have table manners and we have etiquette but we tend to pile all of our food on one plate it's not a big deal our tableware whether it's fancy or if it's just a paper plate man we just stack things on top of each other and we eat but there's a couple of people particularly like my friend brian who lives in long island new york who cannot eat food on a plate if the food is touching each other yes this is an illness for some reason he cannot eat food that's touched each other for instance if a piece of chicken rubs up against mac and cheese he cannot eat it if his asparagus touches his salmon he cannot eat it if for some reason salad dressing touches his rice he can't eat it my friend brian told me recently that even when he eats steaks when he cuts it on a plate he cannot have any other food around it because the juice from the steak may end up touching other food items it is a very peculiar thing to me i cannot wrap my brain around it for some reason he has to eat food in courses even when he is at home and many picky eaters don't even like to have different foods mixed in their mouths they cannot chew two different types of food at one time now clearly i do not have such a sophisticated palette my taste buds are not that mature for some reason these people feel like they cannot have even the slightest taste of food from one food group on another for those of us that don't have that sophisticated taste bud or that sophisticated palette we just say you ain't hungry you clearly have never been hungry if you're that sophisticated with your food look there's a form of obsessive compulsive disorders that categorize people like this and the word for it is bromotectilophobia the fear of food touching this is an actual diagnosis some of you really struggle with this online perhaps there's some people i can see in the chat that are saying amen and maybe even in this audience people who have this phobia simply like to have control over their food and enjoy every part of it separately people that struggle with this cannot even look at food that hasn't been arranged separately on a plate if it looks different from how they like it to look they say i can't eat it and they'll even notice the slightest transfers of flavor from one food to another making it indistinguishable i could tell you that there's so many people that have this problem that it even affects them online they can't even allow their food emojis to touch each other when they're texting they've got to put a space in between it our text brings us to the plight of the jewish people who are under new leadership moses their beloved leader has died and now they're following joshua to this land that they are destined to occupy but they face a challenge right at the beginning of our texts we learn that they encounter the jordan river and when you read later in chapter three you'll even find out that they arrived during the harvest season which means that the level of the water has raised to where it's spilling over its banks and it's a harder than cross harder than ever to cross river it's a really difficult situation they've been obedient but now they're facing a challenge last week pastor john did such an amazing job opening up our teaching series amen you can clap to that a great job last week letting us know how we can move our lives forward pointing to god saying to joshua multiple times be strong be courageous keep moving forward be strong and courageous is a repetitive call from god and yet they've been obedient and now they encounter something that they just can't get over have you ever noticed that just as you begin to become obedient in one particular area of your life it seems like out of nowhere more obstacles start showing up maybe it's just me but is there ever been a time when you've gotten momentum in your life and then all of a sudden the old habit starts wearing its ugly head just as you get some movement in your finances your roof decides that you not only need a bathroom shower in your bathroom you need one in your living room as well and you don't know how you're going to pay for it just as your narrative starts making some traction and getting some ground there's some argument that threatens you guys staying together imagine joshua thinking how in the world am i going to get this entire nation all these people across this great river men and women and teenagers and toddlers across this river but instead of coming up with a clever go-around joshua says some important words to this ancient audience that i think is powerful for us as modern day people he says consecrate yourselves for tomorrow the lord will do wonders among you now consecrate is not a word that we use in our common vernacular is it but it does have some interesting implications in the context that we read it it means to be set apart to be prepared to be dedicated specifically for the use of god in the old testament it often referred to something that was set apart for god to use in the temple like utensils or particular furniture or it had this sense of cleansing and preparing for god to do something exclusive with a group of people and at times in the context that we read the people will respond by washing their clothes or getting ceremonially or ritually clean courage had gotten them to this obstacle but it wouldn't get them over this obstacle now i don't believe that god suffers from bromotactilophobia but in light with the illustration that we opened up with i do believe that there are certain times where god looks at his people and he sort of looks at him like one of these toddler plates and he says if i'm going to use you you got to make sure you put yourself in a context where you're not touching other things that if you're going to be used by me exclusively there are times where god says i have to set you apart from everything else so that i can use you for a dedicated purpose and god looks down sometimes and he says i need my people to be separate for a season to prepare them to do something that they could not do in their own ability and in their own strength and so like brian my friend that looks at a plate and says if it doesn't look the way i need it to look i can't eat it god looks and he says to his people if you don't look the way i need you to look for this season i can't use you in the same way when my friend brian says slight transfers of flavor from one food to another make taste indistinguishable god has certain seasons where he says i've got to separate you so that you can be distinguishable from an onlooking world then i'm actually trying to sow my glory sow my power and sow my presence and he says the best way for us to do that is to get in a section to be separated for my use it's true that god wants us to be courageous but it's also true that god wants us to be consecrated and by virtue of having a relationship with god god calls us people to be holy to be separated for his use and i can tell you that god's not expecting you to be so separated from your friends and your family that you can't influence them but there are times where he says i want you to be separated so that i can do something big in your life and like joshua calling these ancient jews to a season of special preparation i believe that god's calling our church to a season of special preparation so that he can do wonders among us and here's something that you got to get a hold of everybody consecration takes us where courage can't there are certain places that courage will take us but it's going to take consecration to get us over now for many of us when we hear this word consecration we start to bristle it feels like sandpaper rubbing against our soul because for some reason it feels like we're being called to being self-righteous or more obnoxious or more holy in a way that we just don't feel comfortable with in fact if you're not a christian and you're watching or if you're in this room today perhaps one of the things that you don't like about christians is that they already appear so set apart so obnoxious and not inclusive well hang on in there this message is going to include you as well that you can participate in being consecrated as well and toward the end of this message i'm going to give you a specific way that you can start now if you're looking to get over obstacles and you want something else to help you i think a great book is ryan holidays the obstacle is the way the timeless art of turning advantage adversity into advantage if you really need a great book for the fall season see like me when it comes to me getting involved with getting over my obstacles i want a shortcut i want to go through it or i want to go over it as fast as i can but mr holliday says sometimes the longest way around is the shortest way home i pride myself on not having to use gps more than once if i go someplace with gps one time i resolved and i'm not gonna do it again and so i look for landmarks and icons to remind me of the way that i need to go and recently in new york we had this huge storm that wreaked havoc in our community and in our county for eight days my family and i were displaced because we had no power and no running water and so we ended up staying with some friends in our neighborhood that took us in for the eight days our close close friends and it was awesome well one night we decided to go out for dinner and my friend sent me some instructions on where we needed to go and as we were heading back to go home he said hey it might be difficult there's going to be some trees down we never know and just like that we were driving home and there was this huge tree out in the middle of the road that we couldn't get over and so he made a u-turn and i started to follow him as we were making our way back to his house i was like why is he going this way there was so many different ways he could have went that i thought were the best way to go home because i was going off of instinct but there are times in life where it's better to follow instructions than it is to follow your own instinct if i were to follow my own instinct it would have taken me a much longer way to go home but because i followed somebody that knew where they were going we ended up getting safely home here in the text joshua gives instructions to the people he says when you see the levitical priest carrying the ark of the covenant of the lord your god move out from your positions and follow them since you've never traveled this way before they will guide you stay about a half mile behind them keeping a clear distance between you and the ark make sure you don't come any closer so real quick the ark of the covenant was this piece of golden furniture where the presence of god resided and when the priests the levitical priests carried that piece of furniture the people were all supposed to step out and move their lives forward following the presence of god i am so grateful that during this church at home season that we've been immersed in this year that our church has gathered online consistently over the last couple of months on the leadership of our senior pastors and also now we're re-gathering at many of our locations and still so many people are joining us online you stepped out to move your life forward because the truth is none of us have ever been this way before we've never been in this context ever being immersed in two dual pandemics racism and covid19 none of us have been in this masculine and uncertain heavily hand sanitized and sometimes head insane culture that we find ourselves in right now so we need more instruction than we need our own instinct we need more details on how to follow god instead of just relying on our own feelings and our position is crucial because the only way you know you're in the right spot is if we're underneath god's authority and behind his leadership when i was driving behind my friend john as he was making his way back to his home i wasn't riding on his bumper too close because if he stopped there would have been an accident and i couldn't get in front of him because i was not the leader in the same way we have to apply that and we have to look at the instructions here's what joshua says consecrate yourselves for tomorrow the lord will do wonders among you again the word consecrate means to set apart to dedicate something exclusively to the use of god but in this original language even the root stem of that word implies personal responsibility you're to focus on your own consecration which means you can't consecrate your spouse you can't consecrate your roommate you can't constant and you can't expect the life church to consecrate you you're gonna have to consecrate yourself not your friend not your buddy not anybody else it's our personal responsibility maybe that's the reason why paul the new testament leader that started churches and then wrote letters to those churches to help them grow spiritually letters that are now included in the bible's new testament rights to a church in a place called corinth and this church had a lot of issues with following god in their day-to-day lives and so he told them since we have these promises dear friends let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit perfecting holiness out of reverence for god we have a role in our consecration it's a personal duty that means all of us have to deliberately put ourselves in a position to be exclusively used by god by making ourselves more like him making ourselves more righteous not self-righteous but more like god if i ask many of us do you want to be like god you'd probably say yes but the truth is many of us want to be like god so we can destroy our enemies so that we can know everybody else's business and so that we can basically rule over everybody so in preparing the sermon i had to ask myself a very personal question do i want to be holy and maybe i need to ask you that question too do you want to be holy like do you really want to be holy and what does that mean to you when's the last time you even equated christianity with holiness i grew up in a faith tradition where holiness meant that you didn't go to the movies you didn't have a tv in your house you didn't wear certain things and then you just gossiped about everybody but the truth is holiness is not about what you do as a work holiness is about being like god here's a good definition for you it refers to us being separate from sin like god is and devoted to seeking god's honor that's what holiness is about it's about god's transcendent majesty and not our own and one of the ways we do this practically to become more like god in our day-to-day lives is through fasting so what's fasting it's it's designed to examine our lives to confess of all known sin and to repent which means to turn away from those sins and to set oneself apart for god's use by abstaining certain types of food and liquids for a specific period of time fasting is the willful refrainment from certain things so that we can get better connected to god and what's prayer prayer is simply talking to god and when you combine these two powerful spiritual habits we grow in our faith we move our lives forward and we start seeing god do amazing things now there's some things i've got to help us with so that we don't just have a glorified diet period there are things that you need to know if you're going to fast successfully and pray successfully to consecrate yourself to move your life forward here's some things you need to know consecration is never convenient the truth is there's never a time when you're exactly going to feel like fasting when the video rolled out a second ago announcing our season of prayer and fasting it wasn't like everybody was like i cannot wait to do that baby we we weren't that way because really when we subdue ourselves it's not convenient consecration takes concentration that means in the coming weeks we're going to need to evaluate how to order our schedules and our lives so that we can have a great period of fasting the way i like to describe it is that every follower of god needs a slot a spot and a strategy a slot a dedicated time when you pray and you fast we need a spot a designated and undistracted place for us to pray and to have it effective in fasting and prayer season you need a strategy a developed plan of what you're going to pray about during that period of time and in order to help us consecrate ourselves and to concentrate as a church our church usually has two seasons of fasting and prayer usually in january we do 21 days of prayer and fasting to dedicate the first portion of our year to god and then in august we normally have 21 days of prayer you may be asking why are we having 21 days of praying fasting this time then as we approach september 10th through the 30th it's because we've never been this way before we've never had to deal with the tensions of our culture right now we've never had to deal with the political landscape we haven't had to deal with a global virus that has ravaged many lives and so we need to couple these two forces together to get prepared for the season that we're getting ready to enter into and so there's different types of fast there's a complete fast in this type of fast you only drink liquids perhaps or you abstain from food typically you drink water or light juices you could do a selective fast which is the type of fast of removing certain things from your daily food consumption like sweets and meats and some people call it a daniel fast there is a partial fast and this fast is sometimes called a traditional jewish fast where from six a.m to three or 5 p.m you dedicate that slot not to have any food during that time and there's also what's called a soul fast and this is a great option for those of us who don't have much experience fasting food or have medical conditions that we need to be very cognizant of you refocus certain areas of your life as a sacrifice to god so maybe you say i'm giving up netflix for a couple of weeks or i'm giving up prime or hulu or tick tock there are young people passing out all across this they're already shaking their heads saying that's not gonna happen right like we give up something during that period of time to honor god in consecration well it requires preparation so let me explain depending on what you decide to fast you'll need to prepare you're going to have to get rid of some of the carbs in your house or some of the sugar in your house you're going to have to get prepared because that's what consecration is it is preparing myself to be used by god in a big way and that leads me to our last point consecration requires it must have expectation too many times we go through fasting as if it was an obligation or that we're putting god in a full nelson to wrestle him into giving us a miracle and yet god wants to bless us he wants us to expect that he's going to move in our lives in a big way the people of israel were expected for god to work a miracle they were to be eager and gripped with a sense of awe and a sense of wonder that god was going to do exactly what he said because he's a great father that wants to bless his children look he says if you do this act of worship because fasting and prayer is an act of worship it's not a work you do this act of worship then i'll handle the wonders god says if you do this today be prepared because tomorrow i'm going to work amongst you consecration takes us where courage can't you see don't you hate when people are not prepared when they come to a meeting and they're not prepared with the data and the information that you need we all get annoyed by people that are not prepared teams that go to a game and they haven't prepared with practice do not win the games much less end up going to a championship because my family and i were not prepared for that storm that knocked out all the power in our neighborhood we had to end up staying at somebody else's house for eight days my wife had been telling me for over a year get a generator we need a generator get a generator and by the time we had a storm hit us all the generators were sold out the reason why our church is entering into the season of 21 days of prayer and fasting is because god is trying to give us a spiritual generator that will give us that'll give us power when all of the storms knock everything else out we'll have a resource that will allow us to power through the aftermath of some of the storms that are inevitably going to affect us listen when we decide to praying fast we aren't removing the probability of encountering obstacles we're getting prepared with a spiritual generator that'll get us through the aftermath of obstacles everywhere in my neighborhood there were power lines down all over the place but there were still some people that had generators and there were also people that had lights and i wondered how certain people had power that didn't have a generator how did they get it i found out much later when a guy came to my house to fix some things that it was because those outdoor power lines that are connected in many ways he looked at mine that was connected to my house and he said i think you should get those power lines put underneath the ground there were many houses in my neighborhood they ran their power lines in a place that nobody could see it in a place that was undetected to the human eye and when it comes to praying and fasting a lot of times we see prayer on stage and we see power on stage with people singing and leading and so on but the truth is praying fasting helps us put certain power underneath the ground where no one can see tucked away in places that no one else can access it but it definitely still keeps us afloat this is why during this prayer and fasting season please don't be all up on instagram and facebook posting what you wish you were eating and what you wish you were doing jesus said it plain he said when you fast don't look sombra as the hypocrites do and disfigure your face and so on instead wash your face anoint your head with oil so that your fasting will not be obvious to people but it'll be obviously your father who is unseen but will reward us openly many of the great moves of god were always prefaced by great moves of preparation by people i say it again many of the great moves of god in history were prefaced by great preparation by people john the baptist before the debut of jesus's earthly ministry he prepared the way of the lord by calling people to repentance asking them to do things different than what they were doing before jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days in the wilderness preparing himself to fulfill his father's will and then before he ascended to the right hand of his father he told his disciples that they were to tarry for a while and wait until they were endued with supernatural power that would come from the holy spirit before god does something special with his people he asks his people at times to prepare in a special way and he says if i'm going to use you if i'm going to do something miraculous for you i want you to take a period of time where you get away from everything else and you lock in with me that those other things that would normally touch your life i'm gonna ask you to lock in with me because consecration takes us where courage can't and maybe you're a person that hasn't traditionally fasted much and you seem to feel like you're okay spiritually let me say something to you you can be a christian and not fast and pray you just won't stay an effective christian if there aren't seasons when you fast and pray it's so important the disciples they struggle with fasting and prayer just like you and i that's one of the reasons why i'm a christian today in matthew chapter 9 in fact some people came up to jesus and they said hey wait a second your disciples they don't fast and pray the disciples of john fast and offer prayers and so did the disciples of the pharisees but yours all they do is eat and drink and jesus responded can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and they will fast in those days yet in matthew chapter 10 one chapter later jesus dispatches his disciples to do amazing things to heal the sick to open up the eyes of the blind to cast out devils and yet they encounter an obstacle when i read the bible i have to read the bible and insert myself in it i'm i'm glad i'm not in the bible because i'd be one of those dudes that was just ratchet like i'd i'd cause a mess right like i always think about what would i be doing when i listen to jesus teach jesus is telling his disciples some things like this look i'm sending you out as sheep among wolves so be as shrewd as snakes and as harmless as doves i would have been like did he just say wolves wolves but beware jesus says for you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues course flogged i'd be looking around yo philip did you just hear what he said john is he jesus goes on when you are arrested don't worry about how to respond i would have been like wait a second we got to catch a case tough to be obese to be obedient and then jesus closes don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body once he said kill your body i'd say y'all fast yah pray i'm gone it took courage for them to be obedient to do those things right it took courage for them to step out but they reached an obstacle because they come and encounter a man who has a son that is occupied by demonic activity so much so that this evil spirit is casting his son into the fire and punishing his body and he brings this son of his to the disciples but they can't bring any healing and he goes to jesus he says hey i brought him to your disciples but they couldn't cure him they were courageous but they weren't as consecrated jesus rebukes the devil out of him and later the disciples are sitting around and they're saying hey jesus why couldn't we do that and jesus says oh i get it listen this kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting i know you're courageous but i need you to be consecrated to there's a world that's going to be bringing us all different types of issues and all different types of pain and problems and my god we are praying that they will encounter a church that is consecrated enough that some difference can be made in their lives god is trying to get a people consecrated so that he can have a church that distributes his glory distributes his power and distributes his presence listen to me we pray to connect with the nature of god and to be endued with his power but we fast to disconnect from the nature of man and the world to subdue the power of the flesh we pray so that we can be endued we fast so that we can subdue the flesh and jesus says there is coming a time when the bridegroom would be taken away and then they will fast ladies and gentlemen we are now in that time consecration is personal and it's powerful and i can tell you that consecration also takes us where courage can't there's a story of a number of traveling exorcists in the bible's new testament they were in a place called the fee in ephesus and the writer of that particular context luke in the book of acts says that there was a jewish family and they were traveling around and they were having success in rebuking these evil spirits out of people but they did something very very silly a group of jews were traveling from town to town we read in the book of acts that's located in the bible's new testament that they tried to use the name of the lord's jesus in their incantation saying i command you in the name of jesus whom paul preaches they had no connection with jesus whatsoever and they didn't even connect with paul they were trying to rebuke a demon in the name of jesus whom paul preaches and it's a powerful example of how sometimes people are trying to divert their own personal consecration on somebody else you can copy courage but you cannot copy consecration this is why the bible says consecrate yourselves consecrate yourself instead of thinking about your plate in a proverbial or a metaphorical sense and how much things you're going to have to take off your plate start thinking about how can i just put myself in a season for a 21 days where i'm just not touching certain things that i'm accustomed to touching and allowing things to touch me spiritually maybe instead of thinking how many tasks you have on your plate maybe you would focus enough to say i'm not worried about everything else and what i got to do i'm going to put myself in a context where god can use me exclusively and powerfully and maybe as a church it'll be like acts chapter 13 that while they were worshiping the lord and fasting the holy spirit said set apart from me barnabas and saul for the work to which i have called them and then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off i'm praying that this season allows some people in our church to be called up and to be called out because we decided to take our lives and put it in a toddler plate of sorts and say god i want to be used exclusively for your purposes because listen to me everybody when courage runs out consecration takes over and when courage will unlock certain doors there are doors that only consecration can fling wide open so if you're a believer if you're a follower of jesus and you're in this room or you're joining us at one of our locations or perhaps in our chat and online can i tell you now is not the time to follow our instinct now is the time to follow instructions and i feel like god is telling us one simple instruction consecrate yourselves because i'm going to do wonders among you if that's you would you open up your heart big and wide if you want to be prepared a vessel that god can use in this next season in a big way i want to say a prayer for everyone in this room and that's joining us online come on everybody let's open up our hearts big and wide to god father we thank you because we have never been this way before and if we're gonna move out of our season it's gonna be because we're moving our lives forward behind you would you lead us in a path of righteousness for your namesake but would you also give us the courage to consecrate ourselves to push away the things that would normally be integrated into our life help us to be people that are set apart so that we can be a people that are distributed god we're asking in the name of jesus as we move into this season that you will move in our church in our marriages in our family in our community in our finances in our nation all around the world because we've decided to be a people that will set apart ourselves for a period of time to see you move in a great way and we thank you for that in jesus name amen and maybe there's some people in this room or joining us online you have not started a relationship with god well here's what i'm going to ask you to do instead of thinking about all the things you got on your plate that don't make you available or eligible to god i want to tell you that god wants to touch your life even though you may have touched some things that you wish you weren't so involved in if you're watching online or if you're in this room god wants you to offer your heart before you offer anything else before you start saying well i got to get rid of this and i got to get rid of that i got to get just give him this important part of you your heart and i want to lead you in what we call it our church a fresh start prayer it's an opportunity that if you've never had a relationship with god this is not about making you perfect this is about making you a child of god and here's what i'm going to ask you to do you can make this prayer audible or you can pray it in your heart whatever makes you feel comfortable it's just so much that you make a confession so here's how you do it and i would love for everyone in this room and those joining us online and in the chat this is the most sacred moment of our service we want to lead you in this fresh start prayer you can say it along these lines father i've sinned and i'm sorry i turn away from that and i turn to jesus who died for me who was buried for me and rose again for me i ask you to send your holy spirit to give me the strength to follow him all of my days today i make jesus leader and lord of my life in jesus name amen if you just prayed that prayer we want to welcome you to the body of christ to the family of god you're going to get some clear next steps but i want to remind us one more time that god is calling us to a season of consecration and you don't have to be intimidated all you have to do is say god for this season for a few weeks i'm going to put my life in a category then you can use it in a powerful way if that's you and you want to see god do wonders in your life if you're looking at this act of worship and that you believe god is going to do wonders why don't you lift your voice and say god if you can use preparation i think it's super important to make sure that you know we're always prepared we're about to go into this season of prayer and fasting and so you know we need to have a plan i think pastor wayne explained it's so beautiful you have you know a slot in a space and making sure you just know right what you're going you know what you're going to do what are you fasting from what are you believing god for in this season so i think that's just an awesome reminder that you have to be prepared yeah and i love how he also says you know uh concentration is never is never convenient right so when you're getting ready to do this it's never really a convenient time to consecrate yourself but you got to be intentional about it i believe that you got to make time for it what you prioritize really shows what you value you know i think even with our quiet time and stuff if you don't prioritize your quiet time in your life do you really value your quiet time same thing with cause concentration um consecration when we consecrate ourselves we're showing god hey i really value you above anything else there's never a good time for me to do this but i'm gonna make it important it's a value in my life and i'm gonna make it a stamp and you know really if we try to wait for for the right time or when we're less busy or we have less going on really there's never gonna be a good time so why don't you do it now do it right now make a plan to do it be intentional i think he goes into the three little the spot the slot the spot the strategy and he kind of talks about those three things you got to have a slot you got to have a spot and you got to have a strategy you got to be intentional when you're consecrating yourself and getting ready for prayer and fasting so it was a kind of even talked about a little bit last service of how you consecration expectation really must go hand in hand yeah right so you got to have some expectation coming out of of when you're consecrating and you're setting this time aside you've got to expect god to do some things you're going to expect god to move in your life that's why one of the reasons you're doing it jeffrey says that september 10th through the 30th it's going to be awesome well we also have something that we're doing uh a hurricane relief fund you want to tell them a little bit about that yeah of course so we are sending a team we have two ways that you can actual a couple of ways really that you can uh be a part of that so we have a fund where we're donating to those families and everyone who has been impacted by the hurricane in the gulf that hit this past week we're also sending a team of volunteers so if that's you and you want to either give or you want to participate in that team i think that team leaves tomorrow you can do that there's a link that's coming up in the comments so let's stand inside we're going to be moving aside we're going to be helping them clear debris helping them get supplies whatever it is that those people need in this time we're going to come alongside them and help them the best way that we can so another thing that you can do uh is pray so let's just make sure that we're praying for all of those who have been negatively impacted and also pray for those teams not only our church there's a ton of other churches and organizations who are also going down to help so let's make sure we keep them in our prayers as well yeah you know i think there's always there's something we can do right whether it's giving whether it's going and being a part or whether it's just simply praying i believe there's something everyone can do to help be a part and to pray for those people that are affected so even if it's just prayer prayer is powerful and and those that are affected uh down in the gulf coast they need your prayer right now they need your support you know we've already sent uh supplies down but we're gonna be probably making several trips if i had to
