How can you make it more How can you make it more personal of a communication personal of a communication with Him? with Him? Mother Angelica: Okay, let Mother Angelica: Okay, let me answer that first. me answer that first. First of all, your First of all, your relationship with Jesus relationship with Jesus is personal. is personal. The second thing is, dry times The second thing is, dry times are the best times; they’re are the best times; they’re not the worst times. not the worst times. Let me explain it to you. Let me explain it to you. Everyone wants to be loved Everyone wants to be loved for himself. for himself. Nobody--not even these Nobody--not even these children here--want to have children here--want to have anybody force to love them. anybody force to love them. They want to be loved for They want to be loved for yourself, don’t you? yourself, don’t you? You want somebody to love You want somebody to love you just the way you are. you just the way you are. Well, God wants the same Well, God wants the same thing. thing. He wants you to love Him He wants you to love Him for Himself. for Himself. He wants that love you have He wants that love you have to be purified, not just a to be purified, not just a "gimme" love, not to use Him "gimme" love, not to use Him only for His divine only for His divine providence but to love Him in His Sorrow, in His Pain, in His Sorrow, in His Pain, in His Anxiety, in His in His Anxiety, in His Frustration, in the Frustration, in the disappointments He had on disappointments He had on the earth. the earth. He wants you to enter in, in He wants you to enter in, in that dryness, that time when that dryness, that time when He felt abandoned. He felt abandoned. He wants you to feel what He wants you to feel what He felt. He felt. And that time of prayer is And that time of prayer is the most precious because it the most precious because it allows me to imitate Jesus. allows me to imitate Jesus. It allows me to sit there in It allows me to sit there in this dryness and give my this dryness and give my entire self. entire self. It allows me to give myself It allows me to give myself as I am and just admit I as I am and just admit I don’t have a decent thought don’t have a decent thought on my own. on my own. I must just sit there or I must just sit there or kneel there and just be kneel there and just be present to His presence. present to His presence. Now, what’s your other Now, what’s your other question? question? Woman #2: My second question Woman #2: My second question is, in the catechism book, is, in the catechism book, they have a thing on venial they have a thing on venial sin and mortal sin, what are sin and mortal sin, what are the differences? the differences? Can you give me some Can you give me some examples of venial sin and examples of venial sin and mortal sin? mortal sin? Mother Angelica: Okay. Mother Angelica: Okay. Mortal sin is if you commit Mortal sin is if you commit adultery, if you commit adultery, if you commit abortion, if you covet your abortion, if you covet your neighbor’s wife, if you neighbor’s wife, if you covet your neighbor’s goods, covet your neighbor’s goods, this would be if you go rob this would be if you go rob a bank. a bank. This is a mortal sin, it’s This is a mortal sin, it’s grievous matter. grievous matter. And the difference is, has And the difference is, has to be I must know it, I must to be I must know it, I must will it, and it has to be will it, and it has to be grievous. grievous. The differences between The differences between mortal sin of the venial mortal sin of the venial sin is in the degree. sin is in the degree. It’s not a grievous, but it’s It’s not a grievous, but it’s still an imperfection. still an imperfection. For example, when the For example, when the doorbell rings and you tell doorbell rings and you tell your son to answer the bell your son to answer the bell and say you’re not there, and say you’re not there, you see, it’s not true, you see, it’s not true, because you’re in the because you’re in the kitchen stirring a pot. kitchen stirring a pot. That’s a venial sin. That’s a venial sin. You really haven’t, You really haven’t, you’re lying. you’re lying. Now, somebody called that Now, somebody called that a "white lie." a "white lie." What does it mean it’s a What does it mean it’s a white lie? white lie? A lie is a lie, you know. A lie is a lie, you know. Sometimes you’re Sometimes you’re uncharitable, you hurt uncharitable, you hurt someone’s feelings--it’s someone’s feelings--it’s not a grievous thing but not a grievous thing but you hurt their feelings. you hurt their feelings. Now, if I slander or Now, if I slander or calumniate and ruin a calumniate and ruin a person’s reputation, now, person’s reputation, now, that can be difference. that can be difference. So one is a minor offense-- So one is a minor offense-- if there’s anything minor-- if there’s anything minor-- if we offend God, if we if we offend God, if we offend it’s, to me if you offend it’s, to me if you offend someone you love you offend someone you love you don’t think whether it’s don’t think whether it’s mortal or venial. mortal or venial. You’re repentant over You’re repentant over the least sin because you the least sin because you don’t want to hurt somebody don’t want to hurt somebody you love. you love. That’s the fear of the Lord. That’s the fear of the Lord. "I don’t want to hurt You, "I don’t want to hurt You, Jesus, because I love You." Jesus, because I love You." We have another call. We have another call. Hello. Hello. Boy #21: Sister! Boy #21: Sister! Mother Angelica: Yes. Mother Angelica: Yes. Boy #21: I’m learning about Boy #21: I’m learning about St. Michael the Archangel. St. Michael the Archangel. Mother Angelica: Okay, how Mother Angelica: Okay, how old are you, honey? old are you, honey? Boy #21: And I’m learning Boy #21: And I’m learning about him in school. about him in school. Mother Angelica: Okay. Mother Angelica: Okay. Boy #21: And did he really Boy #21: And did he really fight the devil? fight the devil? Mother Angelica: Oh yeah, Mother Angelica: Oh yeah, he does. he does. He does all the time. He does all the time. He did in Heaven. He did in Heaven. See, the angels don’t fight See, the angels don’t fight with swords. with swords. We just put a sword in his We just put a sword in his hand to indicate he’s a hand to indicate he’s a warrior. warrior. They have intellectual They have intellectual battles. battles. Did you ever see a debate? Did you ever see a debate? Do you know what a debate is? Do you know what a debate is? No? No? All right, just say these two All right, just say these two young boys here decided to young boys here decided to debate on a football team. debate on a football team. But one had Auburn and I had But one had Auburn and I had the state of Alabama. the state of Alabama. And you would talk and argue And you would talk and argue and then the audience would and then the audience would decide which one of you has decide which one of you has the best talk. the best talk. Okay, that’s a debate. Okay, that’s a debate. Which one of you have made Which one of you have made your points and which, well, your points and which, well, that’s a kind of battle that that’s a kind of battle that went on in Heaven between went on in Heaven between the good angels and the the good angels and the bad ones. bad ones. And Michael won by saying, And Michael won by saying, "Who is like God?" "Who is like God?" And Lucifer was saying, And Lucifer was saying, "God had no right to come "God had no right to come down as the Eternal Word down as the Eternal Word and become Man." and become Man." That was to him inferior. That was to him inferior. And Michael said, "No, God And Michael said, "No, God can do as He pleases. can do as He pleases. "This is right. "This is right. "Who is like God? "Who is like God? There is no one like God." There is no one like God." So it was a battle. So it was a battle. The same battle you fight The same battle you fight when you’re, say, for when you’re, say, for example, your mother makes a example, your mother makes a big jar of cookies and she big jar of cookies and she says, "Now, don’t eat any of says, "Now, don’t eat any of these cookies because you’re these cookies because you’re going to spoil your dinner." going to spoil your dinner." Did your mother ever tell Did your mother ever tell you that? you that? She did. She did. Ah huh. Ah huh. But she leaves the kitchen But she leaves the kitchen and she goes to the store to and she goes to the store to get a loaf of bread and in get a loaf of bread and in this great big jar are these this great big jar are these hot cookies and you lift the hot cookies and you lift the lid up and you take it off lid up and you take it off and something says "Un huh. and something says "Un huh. Your mother said ’no.’" Your mother said ’no.’" Now, if you love your Now, if you love your mother you’ll put the jar mother you’ll put the jar back on. back on. But if you love yourself But if you love yourself more than your mother, more than your mother, you’ll take a cookie out. you’ll take a cookie out. Well, that’s kind of what Well, that’s kind of what happened in Heaven. happened in Heaven. The Lord God said to the The Lord God said to the Eternal Word would become Eternal Word would become man and Lucifer and his man and Lucifer and his angels said "No, it’s not angels said "No, it’s not right." right." Well, they argued back Well, they argued back and forth. and forth. And the good angel said, And the good angel said, "Hey, God can do as He "Hey, God can do as He pleases." pleases." So your mother has a right So your mother has a right to say to you, "You cannot to say to you, "You cannot have these cookies." have these cookies." And if you take one, you’re And if you take one, you’re saying, "No, you don’t have saying, "No, you don’t have a right to say that. a right to say that. I want a cookie." I want a cookie." So it’s a battle of wills-- So it’s a battle of wills-- God’s Will, the angels’ will, God’s Will, the angels’ will, God’s Will, man’s will. God’s Will, man’s will. Now, let’s go back to Now, let’s go back to Zacheus. Zacheus. We don’t want to leave him We don’t want to leave him up in a tree, do we? up in a tree, do we?
