what's up guys this is brent with western equipment and in this video i'm going to be giving you a beginner buyer's guide to buying new tractors so before we just dive right in there a couple of disclaimers one this is not just a john deere buyer's guide this can be used across any manufacture of tractor i just happen to be a john deere dealer so therefore of course we are using john deere as our example in this video today also some of the things that i'm going to say at first you're going to think i am absolutely crazy because the way i'm going to go about giving you this buyer's guide is going over first of all things that are under considered when we're in our buying process and then things that are over considered followed by a few other things that we need to think of also but i'm going to start with the under considered things and the very first thing that i'm going to talk about and this is going to be one that is going to kind of leave you speechless at first because you're going to think that this is the main thing that you look into but the most under considered thing when buying a tractor is horsepower now like i said i know that your initial thought is no that's not right horsepower is absolutely the very first thing that's thought of when buying a tractor and though it very well should be this is oftentimes not the case and why i say this is because oftentimes customers in general will associate horsepower with size and price and let these two things be more of a deciding factor than the actual horsepower that they need to accomplish the tasks that they're looking at getting done so horsepower is indicative of what types of implements we can pull what types of implements we can run off of our rear pto what type of implements we can use with our rear hydraulics or with our lifting arms there at the rear and also indicative of our hydraulic flow and the amount of weight and things that we can use here in our front loader so oftentimes this gets overlooked and looked at more past and looked at size whereas this needs to be considered whenever we're talking about with the tractor itself most things that we're doing are not with the actual tractor what we're going to be using the tractor for is to run those different implements so when we're talking about things like mowing or brush cutting or using a box blade or using maybe road working equipment all these different things the horsepower is going to be a huge deal and is why this needs to be heavily considered when we're looking into the tractor so you can be swayed very easily because you can see the same horsepower across multiple different sizes of tractor for instance here in the john deere lineup we have a 1 series tractor here a 2 series here and a 3 series back here behind me all three sizes of these tractors can be purchased in a 25 horsepower model but obviously with the different sizes of the tractor we're going to have different abilities so just because this 25 horsepower tractor over here can use a foot brush cutter this tractor here is really only rated for a four or five foot brush cutter so these are all things that we need to consider and why horsepower is such a big deal when we're looking into these tractors now our second most under considered thing is going to be weight and the reason why weight often gets under considered is because of the fact that you can after the sale add weight to your tractor whether that be here at the rear with a ballast box or some type of implement or also putting fluid in the tires oftentimes you can add weight to the front of these machines with such things as suitcase weights there are multiple different places where we can always add weight to the tractor but we need to be considering the initial weight prior to all the additional added weight whenever we're looking at these tractors because you can always add weight to the tractor but you may not ever be able to add enough to be able to accomplish the tasks that you need to accomplish therefore leading to disappointment and under performance in your tractor causing you to have that buyer's remorse so we need to make sure that whenever we're looking at these different tractors we're looking across different brands that we're looking at the brand specifically and then looking at their comparable tractors so say we have two different tractors that are both going to be in that 30 horsepower range we need to be looking at those weights if we're thinking about doing tasks that are going to involve pulling implements if we're going to be doing a lot of pulling a lot of earth moving things like that more weight equals more power to the ground so say we want to run a five or six foot box blade on the back of these tractors but this tractor weighs more because it's in a higher series than this tractor here then that could be a very deciding factor in which tractor that we're going to choose now this is also going to boil down to different components that are used on these tractors what type of cast materials are they using in their axles and in their housings on these different pieces of equipment are we using cast aluminum are we using cast iron all of these different things within the build of the tractor are going to change that weight what type of additional add-ons are on this tractor what different types of components what size of tires what size of loader all of these things are going to indicate weight this all is going to be indicative of the power that that tractor has so we want to make sure and take that into consideration for looking across brands maybe we're looking at a 30 horsepower mahindra a 30 horsepower deer and a 30 horsepower kubota and you're having a hard time deciding because they all look good to you then weight could be one of those things that you've under considered so we need to make sure and keep that in mind the third most under considered thing and this is going to be one that again you're going to think no this is definitely a huge consideration when buying a tractor and yes it is but oftentimes even though it's a huge consideration it does get under considered and i'll explain why that's going to be the debate between either cab or no cab now oftentimes and i've seen this multiple different times is that the no cab option gets bought over the cab option simply because of price which is totally understandable but i can tell you that one thing going without the cab and not considering all the different factors can be almost the number one thing that causes causes buyers remorse and also causes a customer to maybe later on trade that tractor in and the reason being is that because whenever we're going into and we're looking at buying these tractors we're thinking about weather we're thinking about temperature and we're thinking about when we're going to be using this tractor so oftentimes we think well i'm just going to be using this tractor whenever the weather is decent and that is always a good idea to go by but there may be times where the wind is up kind of like it is today and maybe we're needing to go out and do a little bit of loader work the temperature's nice but the wind is high so we're going out and we're doing loader work with this tractor we're picking up loads of dirt loads of gravel maybe we're picking up those hay bales and we're not thinking about how that wind may be blowing back in our face getting that material all over us causing us to be dirty uncomfortable itchy maybe have allergies and this is causing you an issue or maybe also whenever we're using our rear attachments if we're doing such things as brush cutting mowing maybe we're moving dirt back there with a box blade or a scraper and we're causing all this dust and debris and we are just absolutely miserable while sitting on the tractor this is why the cab oftentimes gets under considered and also causes that buyer's remorse so we need to highly consider yes that the price may be higher on a cab tractor but what do i prefer do i prefer to be out in the elements don't mind getting dirty dusty nasty when i'm working on this tractor or do i want to be in it be clean be comfortable the whole time this is where the cab and no cab situation will really come into play so make sure that you are heavily considering that instead of under considering it when buying your tractor now the fourth most under considered thing is one thing that may oftentimes not even get talked about whenever you're in the buying process if you're new to buying these tractors you need to know that oftentimes you do have an option in the transmission which means that you have an option in which the tractor runs and what i mean by that is by the way you operate it so here say on this tractor here we have a geared transmission everything is done with a clutch and then we have to change gears and then put the tractor in either forward or reverse up on the steering column so this is going to be just more of a simple geared transmission with a power reverser we can even go down lower than that where we don't have the switch it back and forth on the column and simply only have gears that go into reverse and changing our range right here and everything's done at the clutch so once you let off that clutch you're going forward and then if we need to go in reverse we have to stop that tractor clutch it and then move our gear shifter into reverse to get into reverse or we could go over here like what we have on this tractor and have a hydrostatic transmission which is even easier to operate we simply have to choose a range a b and c and then we have pedals down on the floor to be able to go forward and reverse and now all we're having to do is adjust our speed with our throttle and then we have a forward and reverse pedal so there are a couple different reasons why this gets under considered for one is we've got to think again what we're going to be doing with this tractor if we're going to be doing a lot of back and forth movement then a geared transmission may not be the way we want to go we want to look into one of those machines that has the power reverser up on the column so we can easily switch back and forth between forward and reverse or a hydrostatic transmission where we can simply choose forward and reverse down on the floor and this is going to be a great transmission option we're talking about doing such things as loader work or any type of dirt moving things like that where we're going to be switching directions maybe we're pushing dirt going backwards we're using our loader going forward we're getting in and out of stalls all these different things we may want to look at either that power reverse or hydrostatic now if we're going to be using our tractor mainly let's say for mowing or pulling wagons or trailers different things like that just simply moving items around the farm where we're not going to be worried about going forward and backward making a lot of rapid changes then a geared transmission might be the way to go and that could also save you some money so make sure that whenever you are going in you're looking at buying your tractor that you are asking about transmission options now not all tractors will have those options you'll see a lot of times in the lower horsepower tractors that you only have the one option which is the hydrostatic transmission but as you move up in horsepower across all brands generally you do have that option and if you don't have an option and that is something that you're looking for then you maybe need to be looking at a different branded tractor there to make sure that you're fitting your needs now the fifth most under considered thing is one that a lot of customers their initial mindset will be that they do not have to worry about and that is going to be the resale value of your tractor and the reason why this is something that you definitely need to consider is because different tractors and different horsepowers across different brands will all have different resale values and now a lot of the time people think whenever they're going in to buy their first tractors that this will be the only tractor they'll ever need they know that this is what they want this is what they're going to use from now on but what happens and i've seen this time and time again as well is that a customer's needs will change as time goes on they get that initial tractor it does everything that they want to do but then they think of something else or maybe they're pulling that forefoot mower behind their tractor and they decide that they want to upgrade to something larger so that they can mow their yard faster or maybe they got into a tractor that is a little bit bigger than what they initially thought they needed and realized that they could downsize into a smaller tractor and still be able to accomplish the tasks that they need so oftentimes a few years down the road these tractors do need to be considered for what they're going to resell for as the customers need changes well there are two sites that i highly recommend you going and checking out to do your research before you get into buying one of these tractors and the first one is going to be tractorhouse.com and here in a minute i'll actually put up on the screen should give you a little rundown of how this goes but this is going to be the site where we can go in and see what tractors are currently going for on the market this is going to be all used equipment so what you can do is go in and look at your model and then go back in date and see what these tractors are going for and then also the other one is going to be auctiontime.com now these are obviously going to be auction results so you have to take these with a little bit of a grain of salt because there could have been different things wrong with the tractor whenever you're looking at these auction results or it could have been that this tractor just did not have a need in this certain area so therefore it may have went a little lower than what was expected or in some cases it could have gone higher but right here if you'll go ahead and just pull out your cell phone whenever you're looking into these tractors go right to your internet browser pull up tractorhouse.com and let's say we're looking at a tractor somewhere between the 40 to 99 horsepower range let's say we're looking for a john deere 40 44 m we can go right here to that category of 40 to 99 horsepower then we can go to our filter button right down here towards the bottom we can filter that we can go to manufacture go right to john deere then up here at the top we can select model it'll pull up all of those model numbers here for the john deere equipment go down here to 40 44 m and we can see that there's 118 listings for this tractor so we can apply that and then we can go to our year model here and maybe we want to look at just the last couple of years so we want to look at a minimum of 2019 models all the way up to 2022 models we can apply that hit our done at the top and then it's going to bring us up those results of all of the john deere 4044 m's what they're going for where they're at all these different things so what we need to consider when we're looking into this is not only what the tractor is going for but also where it's at so we need to consider if this tractor seems like it's one that is going to be used a lot in our area then we can look at the higher value tractors or if we see that these tractors are mainly in demand on the east coast or the west coast or way away from you that maybe we need to think about that that resale value is going to be less whenever we go to resell that machine but it's very easy right here on tractor house to go and find those things and then if we wanted to also go and look at auction results then we could go ahead and pull up auctiontime.com now from here this is going to be a little different we can also search what farm equipment is out there right now for auction and then we can also go to auction results so if we wanted to do that we'd click up here in our top right hand corner go down to farm equipment and then scroll down here to our auction results tab and then once again we can filter this down we're going to go ahead and we can select a date if we know that there has been maybe we've been doing this research we know that there was a certain auction where a piece of equipment sold we can search that by date or we can go down here to the bottom and we can filter this down to be able to find those types of equipment that we're looking for so again if we're looking for that john deere 4044m we can go right here into our search we can type in all those different things put in that manufacturer put in that model and see what that equipment brought in these different auctions across the way so this seems like a very lengthy and long part to this video but resale value once again like i said can be huge because if you do get into these tractors and you decide later on that you're wanting to either maybe move up in tractors so that we can pull those bigger implements or run that larger front loader or maybe that we want to downsize the resale value can be huge and so you also want to compare this across all brands seeing what a similar tractor maybe we're looking at a kubota 30 horsepower tractor and we want to see what its resale value is also versus what a john deere is and a mahindra and a massey all those different things can be found either on tractorhouse.com or on auctiontime.com so make sure that you're doing your research whenever you are looking into the resale value of your tractors this can be a way under considered factor and can really give you some buyers remorse if you decide to change tractors later on lastly let's talk about the two most over considered things when buying a tractor now when you hear these two things it is likely that you may just want to go ahead and turn this video off but i encourage you if you've made it this far to go ahead and stick with me as i think you'll like to hear what i've got to say about this now those two most overconsidered things are going to be price and warranty and we'll go ahead and start with price and i'll break that down so the reason that price gets over considered is because a lot of the times these sales people in the dealership are going to be looking at getting you into the tractor that best fits your budget and this may not always come with the best tractor to fit your needs now what happens here is that if you come in and you are looking for a 25 horsepower tractor no matter what brand of tractor you're looking at oftentimes there are going to be multiple tractors that fit that horsepower so the things that we have to start thinking about is what's going to fit our needs because we can go over here to a john deere 1 series and get a 25 horsepower tractor but we can also jump all the way up here to the john deere 3 series and get a 25 horsepower tractor but both of these tractors are significantly different for one they're gonna be two classes separated in size for two they're gonna be totally different weight we're talking a thousand pounds difference in weight here there's also a huge difference in the lifting capacities whether we're talking the front loader or at the rear so at the rear for example you have almost twice the lifting capacity on the three series 25 horsepower as you do on the one series so if we're looking into price specifically the 1 series is always going to win because it is 25 horsepower so is the 3 series but there's about a 2 000 difference between the two machines but what you need to be looking into rather than just that dollar figure is what exactly you're wanting to get accomplished because if you're looking at lifting more wanting to do more with the rear the front of your tractor looking for more traction and stability then the two thousand dollars may be worth it to look at the three series so you need to be making sure that whenever you're going in that you have in mind what you're wanting to get done with this tractor before we're thinking about what the price of this tractor is going to be now the other thing that goes into this price is the fact that we have to make sure that whenever we're comparing tractors whether it's within one brand or if we're looking across brands that we're always comparing apples to apples and a good rule of thumb on this if you're out there and you're pricing tractors let's say you're pricing a kubota against a mahindra or a mahindra against a john deere and we're looking at all 30 horsepower tractors all of these tractors keep in mind should be competitively priced this is most the time these tractors that we're looking at these small tractors are in a very competitive market so they should be within a few hundred dollars maybe a thousand or two all right there very close but what you need to keep in mind and be looking for is if there is one that is significantly higher now we need to be asking questions if we're getting up there three or four thousand dollars difference we are not comparing apples to apples and we need to make sure that whenever we are comparing these tractors we are looking at all those different things we're looking at lifting capacity we're looking at weight we're looking at of course horsepower we're looking at front loader lifting capacities all of these things we need to be making sure that we are comparing the tractors similarly and at this point once we've made sure that we are comparing apples to apples we're making sure that we've got our tractor found that's going to actually meet our needs if we're still confused and still not sure the next thing we're going to go back to one of our under considered things which is resale value we need to heavily look into that as we can look into and see on those websites that i mentioned see how many listings there are for that tractor if there's a bunch for that tractor that's a good sign that means that it's a highly sought after tractor and that it is there are a bunch out there and they are being resold probably people upgrading moving on and if you're looking into one that maybe doesn't have as many models that could be a red flag so keep the resale value in mind along with how many units you see that are out there listed now secondly and lastly is going to be warranty now warranty is super important we all know this we want to have that warranty on our tractor to have that peace of mind if we have something that goes wrong but there are a few things we need to break down within that warranty to help better understand why this can be an over considered factor and number one is is that these warranties are designed with a year amount and an hour amount so what it is is you may have a six year 2000 hour warranty on your powertrain so that means that we have either six years time worth or 2 000 hours on the tractor to have that warranty work be able to be done on that machine so most of the time almost all of the time especially from my experience what i see is is that six-year-old tractors may only get up to around 500 hours whenever we're talking about using this tractor personally and not for a business you're going to see that you're able to get your jobs done so much faster that you don't put near the amount of hours that you're initially envisioning and therefore you're always going to hit that year mark first so don't be heavily considering looking for that warranty that has that high number of hours and also the high number of years is not always a big deal either because a lot of the times whenever we're going to have failures and have issues a lot of times those bugs get worked out within the first couple of years so don't let that long hour mark especially persuade you into looking heavily into one tractor's warranty over the other because a lot of the times you will never even hit that hour mark now the other thing to look out for is for these extravagant very long-winded warranties for example mahindra is now pushing out a seven year powertrain warranty and don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with that it's a great deal to have that extra warranty to add that peace of mind but a lot of times companies that are up and coming or maybe they are looking for a boost in sales will add these extra things on to the machines or add up some years to this warranty and use this as a sales tool for their sales people to lure people in to look at so whenever you see these very long extravagant warranties i would highly look into that tractor or that brand and do a little bit of research and see if that is typically a reliable machine if that is typically a machine that people go after and just make sure that you're getting into the right machine and not be lured by that warranty in the end guys whenever we are looking into buying a tractor if we're still confused even after hearing all of these things within this video if you are still confused still worried about making sure you're making the right purchase you are always better off to err on the side of buying one of the most popular brands whenever you're getting into those machines that are very popular have very high sales volume you know that they're doing something right when you see these different colors out and about people using them constantly once again you know that this is a reliable machine because many many people are buying them there's a reason why they're in the business so if you have to just make a wild guess out there and buy one always look into the more popular brands and also another big thing is to always make sure that you are going bigger in horsepower and bigger in size because that will be one of the things that cause the absolute most and worst buyer's remorse is getting into a tractor that's too small and doesn't allow you to accomplish the tasks that you're looking for so guys i hope you liked this video i hope this video helped you out and if it did we just asked that you would hit that like button and subscribe to the channel also guys if
