I just like the idea that they're building the best they can as opposed to good enough you know in the old days you just got the feeling of everything that's good enough and now we build the best we can do let's Let It kick down and see if this baby let's do it pulls so hard welcome to episode with Jay Leno's Garage the car featuring today the 2023 Cadillac Escalade V you know I'm a big Cadillac fan I go way back I've got a 1918 Cadillac which to me has one of the greatest V8 engines ever designed certainly for the period you know everybody thinks Henry Ford invented the V8 he didn't he made it accessible to the common man but Cadillac had V8s way back because uh 1915. and that's just a great motive got a 25 Cadillac I've got a 57 Cadillac it's always been that symbol of American power and Prestige whether it was the V16 or whatever it might be my dad used to say you know the Cadillac's Rolls-Royce of automobiles I go pop it can't be the Rolls-Royce that's a that's a separate car it's a Cadillac he goes oh yeah yeah and then he'd say I got a Cadillac it's a Rolls-Royce automobiles no pump it's not the Rolls-Royce automobile it's the Cadillac you never got that right but when I when I got successful in Show Business the first thing I did was buy my dad a uh what year is that I guess it was a a 79 white four-door Cadillac with red velor upholstery this thing looked like Elvis's coffin inside my dad being an Italian guy a white Cadillac with red velor pocket he thought that my mother's from Scotland who was the most conservative woman so embarrassed to drive this flashy car you know and whenever they drive down the street where they come to a stoplight my mom would look over and if people were looking at the car my mom would motion to roll down the window go we're not really Cadillac people our son gave us and my dad well Cosmic Cadillac went driving a damn Cadillac and then they'd start fighting and the people would get scared and they'd take off and it's just hysterical but my dad my dad loved that car he loved driving that thing you know that was that was my big I wasn't in Show Business until I got my dad a Cadillac but there was no Cadillacs for me in that period that was kind of uh it was kind of your dad's car at the time you know you had these enormous engines 500 cubic inches putting out 180 horsepower because of emissions and all of that and then Cadillac turned a corner and they come out with the V series you know in the uh early part of this this second hundred years here you know I I bought a Cadillac tcsv with a manual transmission the idea of having a manual transmission was unheard of to anybody in my generation the last manual Cadillac was 1948 so to get a Cadillac with a six-speed manual and 600 horsepower that just seemed unbelievable and I still got that car I bought it in 2012. I love it it's just fun to see them go to Le Mans and win it's fun to see them make these performance cars like the Black Wing I mean which beat all the European cars and handling it in power and it probably a third less the price and and this kind of continues that that same sort of theme here this has got close to 700 horsepower let's meet the man who was in on the development of this car Brendan Vivian Brandon come on in buddy Brandon how you doing good to see you my friend great thank you for having us we really appreciate the invite here to talk about our 2023 Escalade v-series yeah it's so exciting to see Cadillac constantly come up with performance stuff in the old days well here's a new hand new handle for you know whatever year it was you know and they just sort of make the same old thing but now I love it because GM is a company of Engineers run by Engineers you know in the old days you'd meet so-and-so and he came from Maytag and that guy came from Frigidaire and there in marketing it but now everybody's building cars the president of the company Royce he's always at Nurburgring racing around setting records and this is is the top of the line of the Escalade right close to 700 horsepower that seems almost unbelievable we ideated this this was about winning the boulevard right and you know our team in Warren Michigan Pontiac Michigan in Milford Michigan along with the assembly plan in Arlington Texas have just done an outstanding job bringing you know this vehicle to reality and Cadillac has a storied history as you mentioned of performance but you're looking at not only the most powerful full-size SUV you're looking at the most powerful Cadillac ever yeah it's fun because you know I'm back in the 70s you can get a 500 cubic inch Cadillac with 180 horsepower like just emissions and you know just all of that and now you've got this is the Golden Age of the muscle car people talk about the 60s like it was well it was a great time and there's certainly many exciting vehicles but nowhere compared to today I mean Mike you know I remember uh Tim Allen I in my show we found a 67 Pontiac GTO tri-power with an automatic and we race it against the Altima like V6 Nissan grocery getter and the Nissan just blew the doors off and you realize so much in the 60s was just horsepower I'm not handling not breaking not anything now you have a completely engineered package which is I just find wonderfully exciting and amazing you know I've got a CTSV with a manual transmission I love that car to me it's it's a four-seater Corvette it's it's fast it's it's uh 600 horsepower I mean just incredibly quick car fun to drive handles I've had it 10 years not a problem with it really really fantastic and that's that's sort of the first of the V Series yeah and now you just concluded with the uh the Blackwing model right yes the last manual that could be the last manual I guess it is it will be yes yeah and now everything's going electric but this is the last the swan song we're going out in a blaze of glory yeah so this has been 19 years of v-series as you mentioned you know this is the last chapter in our fourth generation V series and for us V series represents the top of Technology performance and craftsmanship and that it just oozes out of this vehicle everywhere and we're super proud to be able to deliver this as the last generation the last of the fourth generation V series and B series is both as you mentioned it's Precision performance but also with refined luxury it's both it's not one or the other and that's the key Secret Sauce of v-series is you get the most The Best of Both Worlds you don't have to choose and so 682 horsepower while you have massaging seats that have you know ventilation and you know a really awesome OLED screen that's uh you know 38 inches so it's all the technology all the performance all the luxury and craftsmanship this is what they use we used to call back in the 50s the bankers hot rod you know because well the younger people wanted the stripped out version with the big engine you know successful guys they wanted the comfort and all that and that's that's what you have here and this is what is this this has got to be close to seven thousand Pounds so this one here 6300 and then and then the longer wheel bases of 6 500. okay and how much longer is the longer wheelbase model it's about a foot longer so this is about 10 inches yeah this is the smaller one yeah smaller one yeah yeah very nice tell us about the engine how many what how many liter so it's 6.2 liters supercharged right so 682 horsepower 653 pound-feet of torque but basically the same engine was in the ZR1 Corvette correct it's this it's the engine out of the CTS-V black you know sorry ct5e Black Wing right but with a bigger supercharger okay so this like you say the most powerful powerful car ever produced by Cadillac that's right okay so take us around open the hood let's see let's take a look under the woods let's see what we got somewhere right here let's see where are we it's down under there yep first we hand build every one of these engines both for the ct5e Blackwing and for the Escalade V in Bowling Green and so a plaque is put on the engine as you can see here right of name of the right person you know I'm a sucker for that I love all that kind of stuff so do we yeah and that that goes to the craftsmanship nature of this so as I mentioned larger supercharger that works with the revised induction system and the exhaust system on this vehicle is incredible the sound is very engineered it's a Cadillac sound system but it's 70 millimeter true dual exhaust equal length all the way back and it just sounds incredible and you can go loud or stealth correct it's got a stealth mode on here so we have a stealth mode if you know you don't want to really be we've looked at but you know this this vehicle is designed to win the Boulevard and how long is it to assemble one of these motors uh it's about six hours and how many guys are qualified to sign or men and women and qualified to sign the plaque you know is it like there's like a dozen you really can't do your own maintenance anymore that's uh but there's no maintenance to do really is there no this this this engine uh just you know for the combustion system alone you talked about the performance Evolution over time there's four million hours of computation designing the combustion chamber and the combustion chamber efficiency and you know the reliability of these engines is incredible um and you know as you mentioned we use them in in multiple different locations but no reason to service it it's it's designed to last no I know that because I talked to Jonathan Ward the icon guys the guys that built these really high-end Resto mods for wealthy people they always go with these motors because it's that's it you put it in and you forget about it yes it runs forever all right not a lot you can do one to hear who built ours can you see I can't read the name Anthony Terry Anthony Anthony nice job we'll let you know how it is at the end here and Anthony be sweating bullets during this test right so yeah so you'll start with the powertrain you have to have the right engine and that's one thing when we started to design this this vehicle and we started you know pre-pandemic we worked on this along with the uh the v-series black wings at the same time but you really to get the right performance level this is the engine that that we had to have in this vehicle it sounds fantastic delivers instantaneous throttle response and then when you look at uh some of the things that we've done in the drive line we strengthen the transfer case strengthen the front axle shafts you know to put the power to the ground we have full-time all-wheel drive on on the vehicle we have magnetic suspension Mr 4.0 it's the world's fastest reacting suspension we also have specific pitch and dive control because you are putting a lot of power to the ground right with this specific rear air Springs and then in the front of the vehicle we have the iconic v-series grill that you make sure that we cool the vehicle we did add an additional cooling fan and a new charge air cooler to help keep the supercharger circuit and the intercooler circuit cool when you're designing something really do you say to yourself we want this much horsepower and you try to reach it or do you just work the engine to its Max and that's the horsepower you come you know what I'm saying I mean you always used to hear about the bean counters I know we can't have this we can't have that you know but this days it seems like it's all Engineers talking to Engineers I can't imagine back in the 70s 80s we've got to build a 700 horsepower Cadillac you're fired get out of here you know it just it must be exciting as an engineer to have these sort of almost no limits huh it's beautiful to come to work every day and be able to create products like this yeah and yes we're given the latitude to do that but we start usually with v-series is who you're putting on the trailer in this case it was how are we going to win the boulevard you know you have to be seen in something that's incredible that makes a statement and you know we have the uh you're the blacked out wheels with the big Brembo breaks you know 410 millimeter rotors they're huge but the sound it was really really critical and so we start with a performance level and then we start with the character that we want out of the car and then decide what fits we knew when we started specing this engine this was going to to fill the bill here to really attract the attention and deliver the performance and what's the supercharger is about twice the size of these of the standard ones 1.8 liters is the ct5e Black Wing this is 2.65 so quite a bit bigger yeah and you know the difference here is you know we do have different exhaust manifolds you can think about the the ct5e Blackwing has headers essentially right this has cast iron exhaust manifolds because it can tow 7000 pounds right so this isn't looking good this also can perform at the end of the day it's still a still an SUV and it can perform that Duty as well well I just like the idea that we need to follow me missing okay okay we've got a 508 horsepower you go the guy something does somebody say not enough we need more than that all right you know what I'm saying is is there a lot of that kind of talk absolutely I mean we fight for every horsepower that's why it's rated at 682 right we sweat the details on every single horsepower and so you know once we start with the what performance level we want what character we want then we choose the engines or components that deliver that and then it's about really honing that to a as sharp or as as shiny as you can in this case get every single horsepower is what we do well that's what makes it exciting you know I come from that everywhere horsepower cures any problem you have just get more horsepower you know and then you combine it with sophisticated suspension and handling and braking and you get a complete package because it's ridiculous that a vehicle this size can conform that way it just seems hello hilarious to me 4.4 0 to 60 12 7 in the quarter mile and you know as you mentioned muscle cars of that error weren't that fast no oh no no 13s 14. yeah yeah where it was all right let's close this uh let's see what else are we missing here obviously unique Wheels if we talk here specifically about about the wheels 22 inch by Nine Inch inch wide wheels you know there's three different ones but you know they're all it's really sophisticated well the thing I like he got a 22 in now most of the time if you put a 22 inch wheel on the end of the car you've got a thin wall tire like this so you go through a pod home bang you just blow tires left and right these tires develop specifically just for this automobile these tires are developed specifically for Escalade they have their own construction and so we tune the ride the handling the noise all of that you know very specifically here and they work in conjunction with the suspension this is four corner air spring suspension right uh with the Mr 4.0 dampers which which are incredible you know we have those on many of our v-series products and so in in the interior if if you uh if we look the um you know the first thing that you look at which is incredible is is the OLED 38 inch screens here you know that is really a dramatic and and very artistic way to integrate technology we have super Crews on on this vehicle so you're able to you know have hands-free driving and then the interior we start with the Platinum level interior you have suede Headliners and all hands-free is I mean what you'll could you can only have your hand off the wheel for a matter of seconds almost no you can you can drive completely hands-free on limited access freeways so it could be a full freeway or it could be a uh a road that doesn't have as many as much cross traffic but you can drive until you get off where you have to but you can drive for uh I've driven for three hours straight without touching the steering wheel really yes okay yeah no you can't do that at all oh you can't go oh you can't do that it's still driver assisted um it's not fully autonomous but uh that you know that is uh incredible technology but you know the craftsmanship when you look at the stitching on the seats the perf pattern on the seats the suede headliner and then you all of the the trim that we have for the speaker grilles uh we have an audio file uh system you know in here 34 speakers it's it's absolutely incredible yeah it's funny because you know American roads are so terrible now even here in California we don't have Frost heaps you just blow tires all the time and so the fact that you could you take something and this is a uh old school body on chassis design yes it is and so you know as we walk to the front you obviously have the the face of the vehicle with the V series or with the v-series Grille down the sides here then in the back of course we have uh the trumpet exhaust tips uh different rear diff you know rear uh diffuser and you know that that there's something special coming when when you hear the music coming out of the exhaust how many gallon tank gas tank do you have in this there's a 22 gallon gas tank okay and I imagine black has to be the most popular color for this black is the most popular color and because it just symbolizes like I say whenever you watch a TV show now it's either the bad guys or the good guys but who's ever coming there are always like five of these yeah you know it's just come to convey that sort of uh Power you know can we take it for a drive absolutely yeah I'm curious I've read so much about this so I'm just curious to give it a shot and see what she does yeah let's do it let's give it a shot [Music] oh come to a place to be Kiki fob is there just hit uh sounds awesome now you can go here's my father's Cadillac [Music] I imagine escalates the most popular Cadillac built these days right in whatever form no I actually uh from from a global standpoint we actually sell uh more ct5s oh really and xt5s and one other countries is that a popular car so China is the most popular uh country for for the rest of the portfolio but we sell most of the Cadillacs in 40 countries yeah I remember in the back in the day when that was never going to happen yes it just didn't it didn't even seem viable you know especially in England where they get a little snowy about yes you know but it's fun to see it succeed I mean we are a global brand so um yeah that's that's one of the uh the nice things about working for you know Cadillac and working on Cadillacs is you're not just focused on one region you're trying to create a globally acceptable vehicle and you know there's Nuance about each of the regions uh globally I know in the Chinese models they like to have all the controls in the back because their driving is considered well it's more prestigious to sit in the back it's changing you know over over time now but yes and then they also typically want a larger back seat right and so most manufacturers have an L version of their vehicle we tend to just build the longer vehicle and and sell that because it offers more space everywhere right so but yeah there are there are some Nuance in in technology adoption from a screen standpoint is is a over in China is um is faster so uh you know you can literally order a shirt on the sidewalk and they'll deliver it right to you if you don't like what you're wearing that's funny yeah now is this the most popular car for the limousine services and stuff these days the Escalade it seems like every time I I take a car at a gig it's always an Escalade you pick me up yeah so they're you know because of The Prestige of Cadillac and Escalade we do sell a lot to those Services you know executive transport right I mean it used to be in the old days is low Lincoln Town Car yeah that was sort of what it was so I mentioned you earlier this to get this Supple ride and the performance that's that's really you know our special sauce and you know as as we drive here a little bit more I think you're going to find uh you know really great envelopment in the car and rides really well and then you know you can really let it yeah like I always say the last days of old technology are better than the first days of new technology and this is the last of the body on chassis probably the last Cadillac that would be built that way I want it because once you go to Electric you don't have any yeah there'll still be a need in the future for some body on frame vehicles but body frame integral is let's say going to be the the larger part of the portfolio you know just because it's older like you said it doesn't mean it's it's bad it's just it offers different a different proposition right and it's really around durability in in you know hauling or Towing heavy loads yes I got nose goes up hilarious a lot of torque so we can try v-mode here okay which when if you get on it and get off a little bit you'll hear some exhaust pops in here right here yeah yeah so uh and so we changed the throttle position louder exhaust valves are open get a little bit more uh a little bit more of the excitement out of the tailpipes with uh with all the noise coming out the funny thing I find hilarious is women love these things back in the old days women were intimidated it's too big it's too but now women like to sit up high and they feel safer yeah and more secure I think anybody does you know especially with you know the amount of larger vehicles that we have on the road here in the U.S you know you don't feel like you know you're you're down low and and really not being able to see so like having the massage on the massaging seats yeah it's on the side of the seat there's a little button oh yes yeah if you feel the singular button the little round one if you push it in let's see here round button it's just in front of the uh back the angle back just in front of that okay with I can't see anything yep and then just go in front of it there's a little button in front of it oh there it is yep yep I see yeah yeah if you if you were there you go so now you're I'm on Roll yep you're on roll and what's relief I hope that's not what I think it is it's really for your Backpage guys they never get out of the car when you buy the standard Escalade yeah uh what's what's the basic horsepower on it a little over 400 a little fun okay so this is almost double considerably more yeah yeah so I think we're 420 versus 682. and of course you can shift with the paddles on the side you can in the oven if you pull the shifter back in manual mode down here you'll constantly be in where you have to shift right right now if you just tap them it will allow you to to shift up and down yeah the mid-range is really strong yeah it's all about is putting a smile on your face yeah yeah that's great GM offer any chauffeur classes for you know like a corporate might buy 15 of these things and you know the way they teach the guys how to handle it and drive it in high speed and all that kind of stuff we don't offer for for this vehicle but for uh any of our black wings right you get uh we will allow you to go to uh V Academy out in Spring Mountain right right okay and we teach you about the technology on your ct4v black Wing or ct5v black wing and you obviously you get a lot of on track time too but so you know we do offer it for for those we're not we don't offer a chauffeur class though you know it's funny I I am from a lot of guys had the CTSV it's a lack of better word station wagon yeah oh yeah yeah but they stopped making that yes now it's that's like a really desirable model on the Internet it's a cult car yes is there anything would they bring anything like that back why did they stop doing it not enough call for it or we couldn't get enough takers so we had a coupe yeah a sedan and the wagon I've got the coop yeah yep the the sedan obviously sold the most uh then then the coop then uh then the wagon and the wagon was you know even when we developed it we knew it was going to be you know a really cool you know a little almost quirky you know kind of vehicle but we didn't sell it of enough of the base wagons to really make it economical going forward the V wagons you know people won wanted a specialty to be manuals even when we offered them but uh when when we stopped making them it just isn't uh it isn't uh you know in the U.S especially wagons aren't popular in the U.S so we didn't offer it now I've looked at you know how do we how can we bring it back we don't have a way right now but we continue to look at it and what will continue because there is a niche for that yeah there used to be companies like Hennessy and all these other who would take a Cadillac make make quote the shooting break or a station wagon out of it or any of that kind of stuff anybody still doing that now or is it too hard with modern cars with all the technology yeah it's there's not a lot of body or coach work going on from a body standpoint so it's more suspension chassis engine related but yeah with all of the requirements for lighting and those types of things you don't see a lot of a lot of Coach building now where is the stealth mode let me see how quiet that is so um so we have to go into settings into the vehicle okay I got to take it out of v-mode first okay so we're out of v-mode so if we go to my mode so on the left hand side over there on the dash is a mode switch oh mode okay and so if you go to scroll down to my mode are we in there now yep we're there let's see yeah quieter yep it's also quieter at startup so if you you know you have a neighbor that doesn't uh like you doesn't like you know the sound of a glorious V8 UK put it in stealth mode too well let's go back to our noisy eyes get out of mode and go to what sport uh you just go to the tour yeah that's fine or whatever then we can just go back to v-mode and now we're we're back and this is a 10-speed transmission 10-speed automatic that's amazing to me because obviously the smaller a gear the stronger it's got to be yeah oh yeah and the fact that you can it must be literally the size of a half a dollar or a quarter well they're bigger than that oh yeah yeah I know what you mean yeah but yeah this is an amazing transmission world-class shift times um strong durable provides great fuel economy great response and we have modes in it that know that if you're you're driving more spirited it will hold gears you know longer so it automatically detects that rods very nice yeah it's great it's great and that's that blend of performance and luxury that v-series offers I mean most people never use half the features you know well it's all there we our customers are what we typically call Tech heatons and so they are very attuned to technology how to use it right and so that's why we offer you know full Suite of all of our active safety features we offer things like super Crews and the connectivity that you have you know linking with your phone and you know all of the uh all of that we have trailering features of course OnStar a standard right but and it kicks down like four years pulling too it really does yeah like celebration is a lot of fun and you hear the verbal yeah the other thing we do in v-mode we do lower the vehicle down 20 millimeters right you give it more sporty ride sporty look and also helps with pitch control so this is brand new for 23 right this is uh so the Escalade came out in 21 right uh but yes the V is brand new for 23. I imagine an electric Escalade can't be far down the road eh we're going all electrics right the whole portfolio will change it that what I'm most proud of you know the team that worked on this is that balance that it's still a luxury car and it's a performance car what I wanted to do yeah I mean this is the Golden Age of muscle it's like I was I I say that to people all the time now they talk about the 60s like it was great no it wasn't they didn't handle they didn't stop though you got a 90-day warranty on some vehicles that had the high performance option now you get the whole package everything they kick down you really can't have your cake you need it too these days yes and other than that glorious sound coming out of the back very quiet in here yeah comfortable let's Let It kick down and see if this baby let's do it that's all right yeah you can get used to this real quick that's what we like to hear how many of these you think they'll sell compared to the standard Escalade oh we expect this to be just a seven eight percent of the production because he's about what 151 something like that yeah yeah right right about 150 000 and the best base escalate is what 110 they start just over 90. oh we're 90. okay so that's uh for most people 400 horsepower is the end of the world you know the base escalator is great well the most impressive thing to me is just how solid it feels there's no you don't see the cowl shake or any of that kind of nonsense anymore it's really and that's when we looked at putting V series on you know to the Escalade platform we really wanted to make sure that the recipe was right and this version this generation of Escalade is the perfect opportunity yeah is all the right technology all the right structure it shares the electronic limited slip differential the transmission from the v-series Blackwing the engine the Mr dampers all of that technology is the same and so this platform really was the as we as we were looking at you know when do we bring an Escalade V out we waited for this one because of the level refinement the sophistication the technology and it resulted in this vehicle what's the level uh what's the ratio of the Blackwing manual to automatic when we started it was about 65 percent manual right we're roughly about 50 50 rated so when you get out here and you stop push the brake down pretty hard right and then floor it or you know you'll see the traction control light flash okay and then you can let your let your foot off the gas so okay here we go so you want to put put the brake on hard okay brake is on hard all right then wide open throttle I don't throttle okay okay control light there you go let it go there we are pretty good there you go you know pull away from Timmy's private school pretty quickly with this thing get a lot of soccer moms gonna be raising each other in this and you're not gonna lose if you're in this one just like the idea that they're building the best they can it's supposed to good enough you know in the old days you just got the feeling and everything was that's good enough well that's good enough and now it's it you build the best we can do our vernacular does not include the word compromise so but yeah when I started you know I knew when I started a GM that you know the engineering capability there was tremendous and you know having the ability to Now work on products like the V series and I've been working on V series for almost a decade now and in taking that approach that there's no such thing as compromise or good enough and just delivering the best possible vehicle it's it's an awesome opportunity super fun to come to work to have you know Engineers with the same uh you know the same thought process in our designers too and you know it feeds off of one another well the amazing to me is how Cadillac managed to lower their demo I mean that's probably most impossible thing to do with any product line you have something that appeals to a certain age group how do you keep that age group and appeal to the younger age group you know like wasn't Sloan used to say you can sell an old man young man's car I can't sell a young man an old man's car right you know and that's what they've done I mean to see it become a performance a brand make someone make myself chuckle because there's some memories like it's a Cadillac what are you doing you know it's just sort of you know Palm Beach and all that kind of stuff you know so to see it with the black wing and and this and the whole V series is really exciting so V series were typical customer is 12 to 13 years younger right and more affluent and very Discerning and they talked about you know their their being you know Tech Eden's very technological Savvy and right and that's how we've done it through the course of these 19 years has continued to attract those those people to the brain and then you know we've taken that approach and Infused that across the brain with technology and that's that's why you see this beautiful screen I mean it says more resolution than a 4K TV and of course every rapper now has to have an Escalade you know well I mean it's just amazing how you you get the the sort of quote young hip crowd you know well it's all it's it is the symbol of a rival yeah yeah you know to me the thing that made successful is when it's something I have no interest in and after driving it oh I'd like to have one of those you know and that's kind of what it's because I'm not an SUV guy I got a sports cars for the sports car I've got old station wagons I'm doing that I've got pickup trucks the idea of one vehicle doing it all it just seems odd to me yeah I like when I drove the Hummer you know the electric camera I wasn't a Hummer guy I thought they're big and noisy and you know took up too much space and then to drive that electric one quiet and efficient I mean pretty amazing it's the same thing with this I mean it's a lot of fun to drive I just find myself laughing every time I put my foot down even go into a corner and you get a little bit of body roll but certainly not oh my God it's it's impressive well thanks for taking the time to absolutely show us this car appreciate it I'm glad you enjoyed it thank you guys should be very proud of the job you've done terrific thank you hey you guys at home see you guys next week and uh thanks for checking us out [Music] foreign
