hey what's going on everybody welcome back to the channel today on this episode I wanted to share some of my favorite retrieves for fishing a ChatterBait this is definitely uh my favorite bait of all time if I had to pick one bait to fish for the rest of my life it' be a ChatterBait for sure uh and it is super versatile that's one of the beautiful things about this bait is you can do a lot of different cool things with it to adjust with conditions and the the lake that you're fishing and so these are going to be some of my my uh top retrieves but of course uh you can adjust the retrieves that I'm show going to show you today customize them make them your own add your own little shake to it if you will uh whatever you want to do with these retrieves you can do it with a chatter bait uh as long as it works for you but these are going to be tried andrue retrieves that you've got to try so let's get started all right so we've got to start with the basics and the real basic retrieve for a ChatterBait is just chunking and winding you can just cast it out there and then just have a steady retrieve back to the boat this is going to catch fish for sure this is going to catch fish and it's actually a really good uh way to to um fish a ChatterBait in several different situations one of the best scenarios uh for just a straight retrieve would be if you have uh you know grass growing beneath the surface but you know it's like two or 3 feet below below the surface that way uh a straight retrieve you're just kind of ticking the tops of that grass okay so you're just kind of finding the right retrieve where you're you're making contact with that that vegetation and that's a really important point because you want to make contact I'm making contact with it right now you want to make contact with that vegetation and then once you do you're just going to go ahead and make a top of the rod tip to free that bait from that grass okay that's and that's a lot of times that's when you get your bite is when you're popping that Rod tip okay so uh another situation that you'd want to do a straight retrieve is if you're just fishing down oh there's a fish right there that's a decent fish too on the straight retrieve there we go that's how it's done but another situation where a straight retrieve is going to work really well is like if you're going down like a RI ret bank or something like that a straight retrieve is going to be a re really good way to fish a ChatterBait you know just kind of parallel that that RI rat bank and uh and just cover water okay however one thing I will mention about fishing a straight retrieve is that rarely do I ever just reel it back without doing something I already showed you that in Grass I pop it free and uh you know sometimes I'll let let it pause or something like that but even if I'm not making contact with uh vegetation or some type of cover I'm going to be imparting some kind of erratic action to it you know I'm going to be popping the rod tip like this you know maybe pausing The Reel handle you know anything that I can do to create uh some erratic Behavior with that that bait because that's what's really going to get a a fish that is following the bait to actually commit and and strike that bait so you got to really um you know mess with different pops and pauses and things like that on a straight retrieve to really maximize your success that rarely am I just slow rolling this bait with no action at it at all but that being said there are times when that does work so I don't want to like suggest that you can't catch them that way all right so the next retrieve okay is another good one for if you're fishing around vegetation okay around uh you know submergent vegetation and that is a real pause real pause you know so you're you're reeling it and then pausing it letting it fall into that grass and then you're bringing it out now this is a a really good one if the grass is really fresh you know and it can and the ChatterBait can free itself of that grass pretty easily because if it's like a stringy more algae like grass you know it's going to get just bogged down on that that ChatterBait you know it's just it's just going to mess it all up so you know this retrieve is going to be something that you want to fish around nice fresh grass all right so this next retrieve is going to be one that I use a lot during the early season uh pre-spawn type situation you know mid-50s that sort of thing you know and usually there's some sort of like patch of grass or something that I'm focusing on like if I go to Sam rabburn down in Texas you know when I'm fishing the drains and where there's there's gra grass within those drain drains or Little Creek channels or something like that this is going to be a really good retrieve and you're fishing it essentially like a jig or a worm okay you're just letting it hit the bottom and then you're bringing it up with the rod okay so you're in the rod tip up towards the sky and then letting it fall back down and then reeling in slack in between you know letting it fall all right so that is the yo-yo technique okay and usually they're always going to hit on the fall so you got to keep like a semi slack line so you can feel that tap okay but this is a really good one early season I don't generally use it the rest of the year however there is another retrieve that is my absolute favorite for fishing out deep so we're going to point it out here like we're fishing out deep and uh it is my absolute favorite like if I'm fishing um you know some type of offshore structure and I've tried other baits and and you know maybe I've caught them on other baits but the bite is kind of slowed getting a reaction bite out of the ChatterBait is a great way to get some extra bites in that area so what I'll do is I'll make a big long cast all right I'll let it fall the way to the bottom and I'm pointing directly at the ChatterBait and once it hits the bottom I'm going to reel real fast to the side and then point back at that ChatterBait okay and this may seem like the yo-yo technique okay but it's really very different because when you're when you're using the Reel instead of the rod to to you know bring that that bait forward the bait is actually going more horizontally okay than it is vertically and so when it goes horizontal like that it's getting away from those fish very quickly and uh and those fish don't like that they get really aggressive and then when it stops it kind of goes you know it kind of drops horizontally has a little bit of a Glide and that's why it's so important to go ahead and you know when you're after you reel and I like to pull to the side but then I point back at the bait and the reason for that is I want to give it slack so it can fall um with more of a Glide and it's not you know it's not um slowed down at all by the by the line okay cuz I want that reaction strike so I don't know what to call that one I would I would call it the ripping stop um but it is a absolute killer and it gets some crazy reaction strikes and again it's on the fall that you tend to get the bite but it is a wild wild bite so anyways guys those are just some ways that I like to fish at ChatterBait in fact those are really the primary ways and I just kind of make small little micro adjustments while I'm fishing it so um let me know if you fish at chatter bit in different ways I'd love to hear some of your your creative ways to fish this bait but other than that make sure you drop a comment below if you have any topics you want me to cover in the next video and make sure that you uh you end up you know hitting that subscribe button if you enjoy this content it's a great way to just motivate me and keep me
