upon us and return the grace of your holy spirit blessed is our god always now and ever and unto ages of ages amen glory to you o god glory to you o heavenly king the comforter the spirit of truth everywhere present filling all things treasury of blessings and giver of life come and abide in us and cleanse us from every impurity and save our souls oh good one holy god only mighty holy mortal patriarchs and metropolitans archbishops and bishops priests deacons monastics and the whole order of your church's clergy whom you've established to feed your flock and by their prayers have mercy on us sinners and save us save the lord and have mercy upon all world rulers on this country its president and on all those in civil authority and in the armed forces speak peace and blessing in their hearts for the sake of your church and for all your people so that we might live a calm and peaceful life in true faith and prayer with godly deeds say the lord and have mercy upon our spiritual fathers and mothers brothers sisters and children and save them and by their holy prayers forgive us our transgressions save o lord and have mercy upon our families all our relatives and our friends and grant them your blessings both here and hereafter say oh lord and have mercy upon the old the young the needy the orphans and the widows and all who are in sickness and sorrow distress and heresies enlightened by the light of your holy wisdom and unite them to your holy catholic and apostolic church lord remember those whom we pray for now in silence remember oh lord all who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and of eternal life our fathers and mothers brothers sisters husbands wives and children all our loved ones and orthodox christians throughout the world place them with your saints before the light of your countenance and have mercy on us for your good and love mankind illumine our hearts o master who lost mankind with the pure light of your divine mercy on us and save us amen christ is in her midst please forgive my sleepy brain this morning i am thinking of the four evangelists matthew mark luke and john they are sitting in a cafe this morning discussing the writing process matthew matthew and luke they are they are particularly animated the subject is genealogy like in this morning's gospel the family tree of jesus matthew in case you don't know matthew famously starts his gospel with a long genealogy chapter 1 verse 1. matthew a little on the dry side opens with a list of descendants from abraham long ago all the way down to jesus and then really quickly matthew tells the story of the birth of christ if the gospel of matthew was a movie it starts with the credits good lord all the credits all 17 minutes of them luke there at the cafe on his second espresso luke i imagine we'll have none of this no no mate you can't do that that's boring you gotta give the readers something dramatic right there on page one you gotta give them angels and intrigue and suspense it's the messiah for heaven's sake give them god's high drama first and then give them the genealogy and make that genealogy short that's matthew and luke mark mark who can't sit still and certainly does not need more caffeine mark is frustrated with matthew and luke mark sees no need for genealogies have mercy says mark jesus returns tomorrow and you too sit around and scheme about growing your subscribers who cares about genealogies chapter 1 chapter 3 it does not matter just skip the whole business of birth and get on with the story it's all about the cross in any case so just get busy john as usual the evangelist john is barely listening to the other three john's coffee sits there untouched he seems distracted a little above it all like an eagle one might say anyway these four evangelists so different from one another they each tell the one story of salvation through jesus christ but they do so for different reasons and so in different ways if this surprises you learn more if you think there should be one gospel and not four gospels then dig deeper learn why ask questions seek truth don't just seek tidy answers that score points in the comment boxes that surround us scripture is treasure the priceless wisdom of god infinite in its depth and always surprising no matter how familiar it may appear open and read read and be amazed
