okay so this is gonna be what's been monetized and T monetized by YouTube on this channel over the last haul so ease and just how much this channel has changed in the last twelve or so years so it all started back in October of 2006 which is only about just about 18 months after YouTube was created as a website or I mostly got into it because of the Iraq war which was going on at the time and I was living in America at the time and paying taxes for this and in the end the Iraq war you know cost well over a trillion dollars which yeah if you say there are 300 million people in America and each one of them pays $3 in taxes that's a billion dollars so a trillion dollars he's about three thousand dollars for every man woman and child in America so I had I had shipped him some you know I paid thousands of dollars towards this war and yeah I knew the whole thing was bullshit from the start which is why your videos like this [Music] look at the facts shall we six months after he said Osama bin Laden must be caught dead or alive this president was asked where is Osama bin Laden he said oh I don't know you know I just don't spend that much time on I repeat what I said I truly am not that concerned about him mr. president oh gosh I don't think ever said I'm not worried about Osama bin Laden it's kind of one of those exaggerations yeah we call it fake news but whatever so I didn't actually join the partner program until about 2010 2011 that sort of thing so some of these actually went back and monetized afterwards and this one for some reason you know basically just calling out all the lines from the Bush administration about the Iraq war yeah gets not suitable for advertisers then this is probably the one that most got me into YouTube in the first place eat some gun camera footage of an Apache helicopter and there are these guys and they're literally plowing a field right you see the tractors love playing that's all infrared you know see it shouldn't get the warm ground behind it it's the tractor ease plan the field and the guy usually oh they look like they're acting a little suspiciously but when you actually realize that they just fun was playing the field and the Apache hoses all hoses Amal and kills them and yeah when you're paying thousands of dollars to support this sort of thing and not so happy about that anyway I very quickly moved on into things like creationists it is blocked worldwide for reasons I don't fully understand and this one was actually quite interesting actually wrote an evolutionary algorithm [Music] sound for shagging right so there's actually an evil who should be algorithm that was written here with a graphical front-end and this was my foot the first time that I came up against PZ Myers where they said oh oh it's very colorful and everything but will people really get anything out of it it's like the algorithm and a graphical fronting for it and that's your criticism anyway so in then in then we are includes copyrighted material and now this is sort of fair enough you know a lot of the early stuff you know took soundtracks from places which wouldn't really go under fair use and then I went into first person video very early so there's actually flying planes around with cameras on them and again copyright material born again I can't believe this happens so early on this is I was died of appendicitis in Wyoming of all places in an absolute middle of nowhere and there's this really surreal bit where you know I'd gotten to the hospital and you were the gangrenous appendix as it turned out and there's this bit where you were sorta lying on the table not sure that you're gonna be alive tomorrow and the nephew days later where I'm what I'm recover did I get back out to the car I just look at the blue sky and an amazing experience and then we very quickly get into the creationist stuff with venom hang out and I had a long-running sort of feud with this guy these all notice are actually marked as private and the reason they're marked as private is a few years later Fossum DMCA's whenever they big spat and eventually we actually gets talking and yeah he said that these were that they kind of upset him so any sort of true they're they're fairly there's not much I have content of the ones that saying he's a douchebag so yeah I saw whatever I Markham is private um then went to the wider people laugh at creationists series which I started because people like this all really did in the early days of YouTube have the the upper hand their videos were getting thousands of hits and there really wasn't that much in what they were saying was complete bullshit and it was outstandingly easy to debunk bullshit which is why I started the white people off a creationist series and number two is right these are completely milk source videos there is nothing remotely offense for about these and yeah not suitable for advertisers or into the first of the sort of bullshit copyright claims here and then very very early on creationists are abusing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and this was one of the early ones with Kent Hovind again why the people laugh at creationists for words just basically how much water does it actually take to create a monolayer of water around the earth that's mark just not suitable for advertisers so I mean you'll just get a vibe from this about what YouTube D monetizes and what it doesn't so there's another one that they used her soundtrack that's fair enough this was about going to the moon I can use someone's soundtrack we're into bullshit copyright claims here again a lot of these things they're clearly fair use the why do people are creationist a clearly commentary clearly fair use so you get a lot of the people you were criticized back in the early days food you used the copyright tools to basically shut down criticism which is really what they're there for and this one actually remember this was so I've been on YouTube for over a year at this point and this was a videos I it sticks in my mind as I was really proud of this video at the time because it basically gives you the informational breakdown of civilization yeah you might think what am i well it's my genes right way turns out it's actually not really your genes in that the entire your genetic content can be stored on about a gigabyte whereas the brain that that code creates can hold about the terabyte so most of what you are is your brain and what civilizations are what those brains can achieve together and and most of that's kind of pointless because the brains aren't that good on their own what really makes civilization is when you can start to store the information so he really liked that video at the time hope that was the first time when I was like really proud about that video oh and yeah so this is what you'll get a lot is not suitable prioritize decipher request review okay but quite often if I were to request a review on this what they'll say is yeah we'll only review it when it gets like above a certain threshold of have hits which on some of these older videos basically means they'll they'll never a review it and so we're mostly into the creationist stuff and you know with the abuse of the copyright then we went into Scientology yes I was there in the early days of anonymous versus Scientology which started out actually pretty well you know Scientology of this reputation for being really litigious against its critic and that really isn't work so well waiting for up against the internet so yeah some more on Scientology and some all bullshit copyright claims this is just weird stuff right so three videos all about debating a creationist basically the same general theme and one of them is not suitable for advertisers like go figure at a lot of the early stuff III didn't monetize anyway just just because and this is where we get into the first real DMCA battle which was one very conclusively bhai me and the guy called PPR Jones who was a lawyer who helped out and actually he got into YouTube himself anyway for something bizarre region that's also not suitable for advertisers even though it's basically just venom Fang X apologizing there in the first foray into politics which was John McCain and Sarah Palin now I was mostly concerned about Sarah Palin because she was an absolute idiot McCain he obviously died recently and you can't deny that he had he did a lot of things on principle and you can't take that away from the guy the the whole thing with Sarah Palin was kind of unfortunate and he was also pretty hawkish on things like the Iraq war which at the time I mean i ieave I've softened at times on the Iraq war for reasons that I'll come back to anyway oh yes you can see because dead 2008 and that's basically they will start putting adverts on YouTube and YouTube was first talking about algorithmically promoting or demoting stuff now it turns out in reality of course YouTube needs and algorithms of some sort and the real fear was that basically they would just do it to make money for themselves which in the end they probably did and most people thought well that means that it's all going to be sort of squeaky clean 1980s good family-friendly fun stuff in reality that's pretty boring and so if you want to make money off the internet yeah you've got to have people's attention it's an attention based economy it's only in YouTube's algorithm is probably the reason why YouTube looks the way that it does today but from very early on that would concerns about where this would go and now of course all of these sites are about gaining information determining behaviors and selling new stuff based on those behaviors what do we got more why do people laugh at creationists it's not suitable for advertisers again not suitable for advertisers now we get into the interesting stuff you achieve this is the users this is the first time that I really got my channel banned over this for a short time and this is remarkable in that this was basically YouTube did this manually what it was is at the time we were having all sorts of trouble with people gaming the system YouTube in his early days was a far more amateurish system than it is now and it was quite easy for people to write things like vote BOTS that word dumped hundreds thousands of down votes on your videos in you know a day or two days or whatever and you know I this was basically an tempted to have a letter-writing campaign to the advertising people at YouTube because they always other people who would most pay attention to try and get them to sort of fix the problem with the ad bar and the vote bots and and whatnot yeah and they kind of mean to the curb for that and they like undid it a few days later which is why it turns out let's try this yeah we go support that swung the effectiveness of our recent protests against YouTube without it there is no doubt in my mind that the Thunderfoot channel would just be roadkill at the moment and thanks to your support on the third day the bunny rose from the grave arguably it couldn't have gone any better for us and that's why I have clothing bunny as a mascot right the bunny it turns out he is a kickback - a throwback to an early video where you know what would prove evil who's been wrong and it's sort of bust bunnies in the Precambrian you know fossil bunnies in the Precambrian that's why the bunny is there is the icon in the first place and the reason is a glowing buddy is because of that and at the time you know I mean this involved real risk at the time that you know that that could have been the end of the YouTube channel and turns out wasn't bad yeah it's taking real risks they're rejecting atheism this is again a bullshit copyright thing Oh and now finally we're see this is weird always work with YouTube whenever the only one starts a channel the people who find the channel early are people who like what you're talking about which in this case was mostly creationist and then you sort of veer off and touch on other subjects which in this case was a guy called how the world works he was a libertarian and all of a sudden that the honeymoon period is over that you actually disagree with people on something and yeah it gets interesting very quickly after that anyway the so again for bizarre regions and not suitable phablet eise's even though it's just basically me me versus a libertarian let's say a more hardcore libertarian and and this is even more funny right so one of these got flagged and then it gets age restricted so this is the other thing when you actually start pissing off communities which you'll see I've done with a lot for the years is you usually tell when you're really pushing the buttons when they start flacking your videos then we have the year swine flu which the time yeah gonna be fairly serious and kind of dodged a bullet there right now about this time I was looking at moving things beyond why the people laugh at creationists and so I moved in to actually meet space and had the discussion with Ray Comfort at the time I think it comes across areas yeah my ability to do live video was limited and this is the other thing is people expected different stuff from the debate right people mostly expect you to go in and trans score any points and if you don't go in there and try and score any points and try to have an honest discussion people say that you suck a debate well yeah maybe but I don't really go in there for a debate which is why I call it their discussion anyway and whilst are there I just happened to be at the Mount Wilson Observatory about the same time a cometary fragment hit Jupiter and so by pure chance I was actually the Mount Wilson telescope the game yeah this is the 16th Mount Wilson telescope sir this is one of the telescopes the Hubble used to see the expanding or to work out that the universe was expanding and this is looking through it and that's actually a comment that the residual from a comet okay maybe maybe one of the Hubble telescopes mirror was the mirror of the 16 chai think was actually made from melted-down wine bottles I mean yeah there was the early days a big telescope making okay and yeah okay more debates with creationists so a lot of this early stuff I never monetized anyway because reasons I mean a lot of it is if you you have more than like 30 seconds of someone's video in it the chances are it would just come up in the copyright filters anyway so whatever like I mean it's on this stuff it's just outrageously copyright infringement again why do people laugh at creationists you'll see a lot of these guys and not suitable for advertisers even though there are some of the most vanilla videos out there and then I had the discussion with Richard Dawkins my second forum to meet space which was also a disaster in that this this is back in the days when everything was basically funded by me there was no patreon no donations at the time no advertising revenue and so it really was just my Mickey Mouse video and audio gear and I happened to I was working in America had been to do an experiment in France and on the way back at Christmas I stopped off and did this interview and hear the sound is atrocious yeah live and learn and yeah so we're now doing some actual just reading bits of the Bible and laughing at it and one of those not suitable for advertisers right right there was a guy called pogobat and he was basically sort of saying what's the point of coming a an education which kind of had that kind of got to me and it's a bit of an irony because at the time you know he was doing exceptionally well he's doing much better than me at the time and yeah yeah you said what's the point against school which at the time for him would have made a lot of sense he was probably making a lot of money on YouTube at the time and within about six months of this he had basically fallen from grace and as far as I know I think he might have gone back to school because you know YouTube if you were just a a popular youth figure that's your entire claim to fame you would drop off the radar very quickly this one really hacked me off why that that what the hell's that demonetized not eligible for monetization that was a superb video so I remember right we were actually starting to do some real science videos now just cool oh and we straight into Islam which of course is not suitable for monetization there's some of these I would probably say yeah I mean mmm but very early on that yeah this was just before drama hammer day so I feel very active in the early trauma hammer day stuff none of which of course I'm bothered to try and monetize and there's this sort of thing should if something offends someone's religion should that inhibit what you can say it was the answer is obviously of course not because otherwise all you have to say is it's my religion and I find that offensive and you can't say anything so that that was why I got really heavily involved in drama hammer day which was actually pretty successful for the first three years and this is where I really learned my first lessons about why collaborations on YouTube rarely go anywhere so there were about four or five of us in the I'm going to call us the proto atheist community yeah we never never really talks to each other that much and that were actually some fairly big it is in there so it turns out dawn Exodus he was he was doing a doctorate somewhere there was another guy CDK double-oh-seven he was actually at Princeton there with me at Cornell none of us mentioned any of this of course but and Andromeda splake he was I think he was a PhD in astronomy somewhere anyway so we all started getting together and having this calling show and it turned on Exodus he lived the life that everyone wants to live I think he became a doctor something sort of Caribbean island with an absolutely gorgeous girlfriend and drove on his way kinda lost interest a stood a load of the other people to the point where there's only me and our own rap Aaron rah still-standing he kind of became a feminist went down that room okay and yeah so we started having a show together League of Reason people would love that these days oh but again creating a security Helena pop bottle again we're now into doing some real science experiments and right so when I when I first got onto YouTube people said that I was in league with the Islamists and now a few years later this is a real split in the Atheist community about you know this was bigotry criticizing creationism was just good family-friendly fun criticizing Islam was was offending people's deeply held beliefs and so this was really one of the first schisms as it were in the Atheist community so to speak and yeah I mean for me nah now I mean that they're all kind of crazy oh oh and Wow so this is driving across America I actually stopped in with PZ Myers who later Intel was a feminist of the first water anyway so I actually stopped now and discussion with him whilst driving across America and he was boring but anyway he and then we so touched base to the time to the larger atheist and yeah for some reason one of them is T monetizing the other three arm whatever and again right so again there's a learning curve to being on YouTube and there's always this at a moment when you come to realize that YouTube is an attention economy and it's a ha you you might first think that yes it's you know I'm doing well because I'm making such great videos and then you look yeah then you did this is this harsh reality that things like a video like Gangnam style whose I forget how many billion hits it is now but it hundreds of times what my channel has ever ever gotten and yeah okay yeah drama pulls in the clicks and looking back how could you ever be surprised by this sort of thing it's now private but whatever yeah and this was dealing with the first schism with a guy called Coughlin six one six my first video which had a lot of down votes on it cos people thought I was being a jerk to him yeah Kant had it coming and then I had this debate with my critic so to speak and it's weed you know take a look at it so he was basically in favor or he thought I was being bigoted by criticizing Islam and I know I wasn't and about half of them he monetized half of them not weird more creationist for the osteen monetized yeah also on that same road trip I dropped in with Eugenie Scott made a video for the National Center for science and education because they do a fantastic job and although they dropped a bit off the radar the last few years yeah well recommended and my first real science debunking video which was about T there oh you massive claim that they'd found arsenic based life and it was just complete bullshit but everyone in the press was going crazy about it so yeah pull that out and this one I still say this is one of my my best videos ever because it was videoing the Tetons it's a video of doing a time-lapse from the earth of the earth rotating at the same time it's reordering a timeline now as the Jupiter and you can see Jupiter rotating at the same time show it to us of watching one planet rotate from the surface of another and I absolutely froze my balls off making these yeah some of these videos taking a huge amount of work compared to others yeah but I still very proud of that video and this time that you know I I was a YouTube partner by now if not I was thinking about it so and very early on when I started running ads on the videos the the ad revenue was was absolutely farcical there's no way you could make a living off that now years later people have become much more flexible about things like fair use but at the time there was a real chance that one of these officious big companies could target you for some tiny fragment of copyrighted work and so people were much more cautious back in the day I mean said this is still YouTube's automated stuff the helplessness of atheism again demon monetized okay I mean oh we're going to burning burning a Koran for free speech yeah this there was some American preacher who is burning a Koran at the time yeah so that's why I did is I copied 40,000 copies of a Koran onto a Hama drive and then sort of incinerated with something incinerated it was something in similar to thermite you know so this this thing that erasing something doesn't really count this book burning about there's this there's some antiquated thing about you must never just just destroy Quran well in the in the digital age it really doesn't make that much sense but I feel people getting very offended by this and interestingly these with my first real experiments on human metabolism where you mix up the amount of sugar that your body burns in a day and then you burn it all in a few seconds and it basically looks like a firework you can seem a huge amount of energy per day and yeah okay this is the first time all these people who I had kind of pissed off with the Islam stuff you know decided yeah let's go not just make images that sort stuff's fair game right but they were actually impersonating me and so gern up on to my friends on twitter and send him all sorts of horrible stuff pretending to be me now impersonation isn't very keen that's not free speech you can't impersonate someone to try and mess with their life like that anyway and they they're also doing all sorts of other stuff like frating porn sites and photoshopping me into porn and putting them on their edges like yeah if that's the best you got I think your arguments about Islam might not have been up to scratch anyway what do we get into yeah certainly potassium alloy this was I was actually getting I'd gotten some donations by this time and said they're one of the first things I did who's got some sodium and potassium and a fairly cheap high speed camera and it was yeah I was stunned by what I found even with this really cheap kit with the sodium potassium stuff I mean this would eventually my grant become a paper America's screwed is basically about the health service in America I think this was actually means of getting them towards launching patreon account but it was basically about lack of health care in America what you would call us a fairly all video but that'sthat's demonetised serves more first-person video this was just a summary of my drive across America which is also demonetised oh yeah and by this time I'd been doxxed this is when I got doxxed and it became pointless for me to keep up the pretense so just I liked the early days of YouTube where it was this a Wild West and and the concept was valid no matter where it originated and it always sort of occurred to me the targeting people basically meant that ya weren't up to the League of targeting ideas a spectrum on this but the general hierarchy is ya great minds discuss concepts mediocre Minds discuss events and small minds discuss people all right I mean you need all three but if you're mostly discussing people it's it's not that interesting and I liked it when it was anonymous because it that was kind of taken off the table and yeah I mean loads of people accuse me of doing stuff like this but I've never done anything even remotely like this but he's not entirely virtuous either I mean deep down I knew the eventually I mean by this time loads of people knew who I was and it's only gonna take one disgruntled person and yeah they can just sort of point to to me being at the time an employee of core knowledge actually it turns out I just left corner at this time this guy actually wrote to try and get me fired from Cornell and honestly I mean I mean the state of American universities I give him coin-flipping chances of actually having succeeded now it turns out the place I moved to would say well not really and they'd say oh well your money you videos do you monetize then it's just kind of suck I mean nowadays they've become much more flexible about what they'll monetize but real real sums of money to the point where I could go in this case I went to Hawaii got a fairly entry-level solar telescope at the time and actually watch the transit of Venus and made some videos beating a sort of partial split over Islam with the feminism staff a that the whole thing basically was completely in tatters after this peer before this there'd been the optimism of things like the reason rally a real sense of coming together and think happening then feminism happened and the whole thing crashed and burned we're going up to you know this which you know for me I did time I use especially liked what Ana Kasparian said hair which was you know her mama to lay down the lines that yeah you're really hot you're really beautiful you're really young at the moment but that's not donations by this point and so I thought hey I'm gonna reinvest this money back into the community and put up about ten thousand dollars for a a competition which was gonna be in in four Lakes I think in the end I cancelled it after just one and after giving away two and a half thousand dollars but this is the key thing is I made a real effort to do this including getting a Nobel Prize winner the one Harry kroto to be one of the judges and this really to bring home to me there's something that I told crocked years later you know when he was trying to get me involved me sort of discord thing that he said we we need credentialed academics to give this credibility you know I've been here he's before people really don't care about that sort of thing right now you can get a Nobel Prize winner to judge a competition and it's still greeted on YouTube with the sort of new we can we get Kanye or or the Kardashians also someone who people know yeah so I mean this this was at the time a bit of an eye-opener for me that you know even if you're willing you to you know put real money into it and make a real effort it turns out it's just very difficult to stimulate he said what I was trying to here was to stimulate more people to make videos on this sort of thing you know because there was a limit to how much I could actually do and the the simple reality is that a competition like this really doesn't help that much if people are really involved in doing this that's the most important thing for them to succeed you know competition like this really really doesn't help that much a load of fairly fairly decent string of monetized stuff including some Anita sarkeesian stuff then we're back to why feminism is poisoning ether ISM again not suitable for advertisers right getting to the North Pole this is the was the prediction back in the day that seven years ago now that the North Pole would maybe be ice-free and summer by 2020 ish it's you know it's a it's it's gonna be later then they would get dis apologized sometime after as well yeah BBC how men are aged I hate women I mean yeah some of the but you look at the BBC website now and it really does look just like tabloid website with lots of click paying all that sort of thing more why feminism is poisoning atheism he monetized atheism shouldn't atheist shouldn't have rights FoxNews not suitable for advertisers confirmed by manual review and all of these is basically a bunch of people on Fox News saying that yeah users just need to shut up and it's like really how free speech works banning a confirmed by
