[Music] [Music] welcome to quilting cookies my name is Marsha and I am the owner of pine needles quilting so in Rochester Minnesota along with my daughter Susie let me tell you first a little bit about quilting quickies some of you will recognize these we did these every summer several years in a row and every other Monday morning we call the Monday morning quilting cookies and then kind of life got in the way and we just kind of let a couple summers go by and we have listened to all of you and said you've been missing those so we're bringing them back to life and what a great time to do that here in this summer of 2020 when a lot of us are stuck at home pretty much anyways so today I'm going to talk to you about panels there are so so many panels out there and a lot of you when you come to the store you'll say Marsha I absolutely love the panel that goes along with this collection but I just don't know what to do with the panel's so today I'm going to show you some simple things to do with panels you can make them complicated you can cut them apart and put them back together there are tons of things that you can do with them but just for some simple projects I'm going to go over that with you today with just a couple of options there are also lots and lots of patterns out there that you can buy we have quite a few in the shop on how to use patterns how to use panels in those as well so about today I'm just going to give you some quick little measurements that you need to really write these because on our website we're gonna have a downloadable little sheet of how to measure and some of the kind of things that I've talked about here today so you can just download that for free later on so you don't really need to write these down because I might make a mistake anyways so nowadays we have two kinds of panels we have one that's like this this is a printed cotton panel and these are usually 2/3 of yard or 27 inches so there's lots of those out there that go along with fabrics and then we also have nowadays the new digitally printed panels so these are able to print at 36 inches across and of course the width of the fabric so there's lots of them out there and these two I'm going to show you just a few simple things of ways that you can use these panels now for this one and also I'm going to be talking about this one under here this is life is better at the lake and I've got you can see the bottom okay there you can see the bottom too so anyways we're going to be talking about this one a little bit first and you can see that if I lay this one on top of whoops not this one if I lay this one on top of this lake panel you can see that these top parts are about the same and of course when you quote them things shrink in a little bit here too so you can see that we can see better back here that these top parts are kind of the same but then there's this this little border on the outside well there was a border on this one too so like I said this was 27 inches and if I go from here to here with if you measure with your tape measure this ended up being 24 inches and there was this little bitty blue flange like thing that was also there too so 24 inches if I divided that by four you get 24 inches so I decided a six inch block would be the best thing to use on this quilt and probably on this one as well but you do have to I needed this extra Forsman inch piece you need to have twenty four and a half inches so that you've got the seam allowance on both sides when you put your blacks on so when you put your black sign it would be four across so these would be 24 and a half inches when you put the blocks across the top and then down the sides here it takes seven blocks 42 inches gotta have the seam allowances so you'd need your panel to be cut 24 and a half inches by 42 and a half inches now let me give you a little tip here so your blocks together before you cut your panel because if you're like me sometimes I sew faster than others and um the seam allowances might be a little bigger might be a little smaller depending on the machine you're on so so these four together and press them and then lay them on top of your panel so that you can see just exactly what you need to trim it because you might need to be a Skoosh under and you might need to be a Skoosh over the other thing is if you didn't want to cut off these borders like these black border pieces here this is 27 inches between your blacks you can measure them and you can add like spacers in between to add that 3/4 an inch between every block or whatever it is you need in between the blocks to make it match to so you could you can do however you want and these things will all be covered on that little handout that I'm talking to you about too so this is one where we went all the way around the quilt and I'm gonna show you a few other versions of this of things different things that I did this one too if you to be really really really simple this little Hungry Caterpillar cult all's I did was take two and a half inch strips and randomly went around three times so you end up with two for his tail have this six inch border just like you would with the blacks over here but this is really simple and fast and easy to do and how much fun so we have the Hungry Caterpillar I also have a couple of quotes to show you where I did different kinds of six inch blocks and usually got the quilt star we packaged a panel with some fat quarters so that's kind of what these all are the coordinating fat quarters in a panel and you can do of course whatever you want you can do something like this and you can make all sorts of blocks and again these are 6-inch blocks that are made from this one and then here is another one want to do pretty simple things these are simply three inch squares sewn around the corner and again you can see that we have six inch blocks all the way across six six inch there four patches so you can just get really simple and just go around all of them all the way around with three inch blocks two inch blocks whatever is whatever it is you'd like to do and then this is another one I don't have this one quite finished but again this panel was trimmed trim down and then this one's a little bit smaller and then I just had to figure out what size to make my flying geese to have the geese fly all the way around the outside of this quilt so I am not good at math but I can do this having made mistakes absolutely and I will again here's another one this one was a digital panel and I don't have these anymore but this was really a quite a fun one to do and like I said you can make these as complicated as you want this is a bunch of 6-inch blocks I crossed a 36 inch across the 36 inch panel and then it had some little these little little blocks at the bottom and so I made little quilts on a closed length so I'm gonna hold this up this way and then you can see the bottom I have three rows of six inch blocks on the bottom two on the top with that panel in between this one's really quite cute I had to steal this one from Susie she has this in her house now for some of the digital panels like this one this I'm going to talk to you about this - these would we do these this from side to side has to be enough for your blocks here so like for the 24 you know it was four blocks across when we do them with these kind of border pieces in between it doesn't matter how tall they are so I'm gonna show you some of those kind of examples with quilts that have bigger blocks these are digital and then I want to show you this right here this is an example of one of those spacers that I talked about now this could all be one color but I put in a little thing to go across here little piece in here but this could be all one color so if they don't exactly match up and you don't want to cut off any more of your panel like for this truck it kind of didn't want to cut off any more so then you just add the spacers in there to make sure it all comes together so gosh these are too big for quilting quickies aren't they but you get the gist of it I have a few more that I'm going to show you too this is another one and these are just did these now are ten inch blocks and with the ten inch blocks they're ten inch finished so then again this one when we go to do this panel these digital panels if I have ten inch blocks across here that means when we trim this it has to be 40 and a half to love for the seam allowances but again you decide where you want to cut it off the top and the bottom doesn't doesn't really matter so here's another one this is a red truck these have been very popular lately so and we have kids for these we do them again with heavier cuts for these and like I said when you add these borders over and over and you put your blocks inside the up and down doesn't matter and I have a couple more I want to show you so any 10-inch block and you can use any block pattern that you have some of these I cut traditionally and some of them I use the Accu quilt cutter it's a great way to use your a few quilt cutter checkout blocks and this is the rusty old red truck and with blocks on the top and bottom and then we have a tractor this way you know what I need to get my husband to make me a clothesline because if I ever do this again I'm going to take you outside I don't have a clothesline cuz I wouldn't dry clothes out there if I had one I would put them in the dryer but I need clothesline to hang my clothes I'm cuz wouldn't you find if I hung these on a lawn clothesline and I took you out there with my camera and showed you them all so he's got to get going on that so this one is the red tractor and again some Bearpaw blocks that I put on the top and here's that fun old-fashioned red tractor and finished it with Bearpaw blocks on the bottom two and the last one this one actually is a favorite this one my husband did claim it's an old blue Chevy truck he had one of these long long ago no he isn't that old he was a teenager and it was it was an old truck when he was a teenager but um his was orange looks kind of funny but here again just most Ohio star blocks and I actually had this one custom quilted for him the quilting is just amazing in here because he's gonna keep this one so some Ohio star blocks the blue pickup with this on the top in the bottom so hopefully I have given you some ideas of how to use those clip plans that you might have in the stash we have several of these in our webstore for sale as well if I haven't inspired you in any way so until next time in two weeks I am my store is pine needles cotton so in Rochester Minnesota and we will see you in two weeks on the next Monday so thank you so very much for joining us and have a great day [Music]
