morning Deb good morning Scott we have another Beauty another a beautiful day in t ski valley oh my gosh this is so good I call that blue TOS blue yeah yeah I I love that let's ski some TOS bumps for this video Scott and I are bringing you a mountainful of Mogul tips and as any pro will tell you you learn the skills for Moguls on the flats you learn tactics for Moguls in the Steeps and in this video we're going to give you a little bit of both now by the flats I mean groomers so we're starting with some Sid slipping being able to Sid slip down a corridor is fundamental to be successful in Moguls and Sid slipping not just the corridor but managing double fall line triple fall line like you find in most logal managing the edging and steering necessary and yes this is the time when it's necessary to turn those legs having upper lower body separation skills I most value yeah in able to be successful in bumps one is being able to turn the legs independently from the upper body it's too simple to just say keep upper body facing down the hill way too simple I have to turn the legs under my my upper body the other one is having no more Edge than is necessary Scott man brilliant oh that's dad calling oh my gosh sorry I got a oh my gosh okay I want to talk about using the neighboring bump I did a video on this a long time ago the light was really flat people couldn't really see the neighboring bump this bump I'm on right now this is like the size of a vdub bug that is a big big bump um and there's different ways to handle that bump the first tactic I'm going to talk about is using the neighboring bump and and here's why I like to use the neighboring bump a bump that's really big like a vdub bus people aren't real comfortable making a large turn their skis are in the fall line they get go going kind of fast they're not comfortable with that so what they do is they turn real quickly and they T-Bone the bottom of the very bump they're turning around how familiar does that sound that's not what we want no t-boning the bumps okay so instead what we're going to do is we're going to make a turn and I'm going to kind of use the neighboring bump where my ski can be nice and flat out here and steer those skis around now here's why that works to our advantage here's the spine of the bump right on top of the bump okay now people who tend to be fearful SK the bumps they want to make their turn real quickly and they tend to hang out on the back side of this bump that's the steepest part of the entire Mountain the backside of a bump it's like hanging out on the cliff why in the world do you want to hang out there because this is high edge angle and high edge angle angle and turning your legs and steering they don't go together we need a flatter ski we need to De Edge the ski well when I use the neighboring bump if I can reach my ski over here look at how my ski is flat and when it's flat I can I can more effectively steer it and use my rotary skill I'm not fighting the Mogul I'm not fighting the mountain and I'm not fighting my edges all right so Deb just explained that back here where that shadow is you see everybody see the Shadow or or right here where my shadow is that's that's the clip that's the steepest part of the bump if my skis travel on that I'm going to have a ton of edge angle that's the steepest part of the bump where I'm at right now is the flattest part of the mountain I'm on the top of the bump and right here is just as flat as any Bunny Hill we've been on maybe flatter and I always coach my students to get to the top of the bump because here I'm relaxed I'm balanced I'm on a flat ski I can pivot my feet it doesn't change anything that's happening with my upper body this is the most magical point on the bump to begin the next turn from here I could do anything I can pivot down the spine of this bump I can go over this way towards you Deb and use the neighboring bump but one thing I'm not going to do is go there on the cliff let me look at the Cliff of that bump the the left side of that bump we are not hanging out there when you ski the neighboring bump it's not passive the neighboring bump is not going to do it for you but it's a tactic where you're placing your feet where you're placing your skis and then turning your legs this is a really long bump I like to play with them like I'm at a Terrain Park I really have fun Sid slipping the spine of the bump it's not easy to do it because your tips and Tails are off of the snow it's just right under your boot where you have ski snow contact you're side slipping there I can Edge a little bit and stop and then tip my ski tips right down into the trough and shape that turn and stop okay so that allowed me to kind of cut the bump in half I have fun with that when the bumps are almost impossible because they're long and they're rock hard and to to turn all the way around that big bump you're going to get going going real fast and that might not be comfortable here's another side slipping the spine what it might look [Applause] [Applause] like this is another bump that's the size of a vdub bug so a bump this big if I don't want to make a very large turnaround it I'm going to cut this bump in half I'm going to make two maybe three turns down this bump down this spine [Music] one bumps can add and bring a lot of edge to your ski because the bumps can be very very steep Scott showed you where the bumps can be flat we want to find those places where the bumps can be flat and as we're skiing the bumps having the edging skills so we can deedge our ski lessen the edge of our ski anchoring the old turn with the pole plant that pole plant's like my exclamation point at the end of a sentence I just finished one thought okay I finished that turn I'm here now I got stability I got a big base of support not only my two feet but my pole look how big my Bas and support is can free up my feet I'm not going to be in a big hurry going to let the toes kind of creep over the edge of that bump I even have air underneath my toes and from here I'm going to avoid the cliff use the side of that bump boom and there's your new Anchor Point there's the there is the new anchor point that was the end of that last sentence end of that that last turn anchored it with the pole plant that's your exclamation point I love that and the reason why an exclamation point is it's not just a huh we call that a blocking pole plant but for this video we're calling it our Exclamation point Exclamation point bang Vision use that Vision your eyes looking down the hill your pole plant's going to follow your eyes I call it a c stop okay don't quite stop on the top of the bump kind roll through the four-way stop with that California stuff which is so cool you've got a little bit of a j you've got the the the lower leg the foot at the very end steering up the hill just a bit it's like a little bit of a j turn I've talked about that in my other rotary uh videos and with that you're completing the turn a little bit more it it's helping to control your speed you're adding more steering at the end not so much a check with the edges there's there may be a little bit of that check with the edges but you're trying to emphasize more of the steering at the end than that hard pressure Edge set yes at the end all right I admit I stole this one liner you can shop for bumps but you got to shop with your credit card out your credit card ready that's your pole plant then you're allowed to shop we don't shop the bumps here into the Mountainside for de no way that's Beauty you know what we're giving all the instructors out there little on liners that are going to be help than Rick Baka for that one there you go Rick Baka R Baka so we're working all the skills we're working our pressure we're working our rotary and steering we're working our edging skills for that we have to have versatility for all of the various sizes and shapes of bumps that's why we're at this for a lifetime lifelong learning uh Scott let's find some more bumps
