here we go in three two one hi everybody welcome to another quarter finals edition of game central i'm shawn woodland with neil maddox we have one test remaining for the met here in the quarterfinals and so far neil i think so the open went great we were able to welcome the entire crossfit community globally back into competition and next up is the quarterfinals quarterfinals is an online competition where the athletes who advance out of the open have to do six more tests after that online competition the top athletes out of the quarterfinals then move on to the semifinals so imagine like highlight graphic i think the quarterfinals was one of the best additions that they did to the crossfit game season this year it separates the everyday crossfitters who really like to do the open from the ones who are more serious about competition like sam briggs yeah turner michael norman you see two veterans two yep two vets yeah quarterfinals allowed people to really get a taste of what it would take to get to the level uh of somebody who was contending for a spot at the crossfit games this is quarterfinals day three for the men we are starting at line number one i think it brought a lot of affiliates in particular into the mix where they could celebrate the top athletes within their gym and really rally behind them as they make one more effort to get themselves into in-person competition [Music] that's fast yeah that's pretty good one minute rest the quarter-finals of this happening so stage two is now inside everybody's gym and it's definitely been a kind of interesting shift of qualifying to get to the next stage but i also think it's a really cool and interesting way to involve more people kind of like a bigger regional okay so that and the ghc want to do tomorrow yeah but if we do the fronts the front squat and this my coach is max el hodge he owns training think tank and then operates his business out of my gym so we're both kind of in the hub of here which is nice quarterfinals this year was a it was a new style of competition especially for us so when it was like oh quarterfinals is going to be in person it's not us managing this gym to get four people in it's managing it to get 40 people through it and it was stressful i'm ready now all right let's go i mean i could get it set up pretty quick no reason to wait hello my sir what up nice ride dan thank you appreciate that how you doing how you doing very good good to see you just saw the tests they're out do you already know what they were uh they're already planning for them in there yeah okay cool i'm excited i think it's gonna be fun quarterfinals is interesting it's obviously brand new right we've never had this stage of the competition before what's up guys oh baby yeah it does give a spotlight to the athlete that is above average but not quite a games level athlete what you're looking at yo the chicago all right come on man get under there oh on the box i mean that way i didn't really do it the fox didn't oh people people touched that oh that's true um we prepped for quarterfinals as much as we can we got the floor plans on monday so then we're thinking okay we got logistical strengths we got a lot of athletes in here how do we plan this how do we map the gym out we have media people coming in how do we tape all these areas off it feels like either a crime scene or an escape room well they didn't use caution tape they use danger tape yeah we don't use caution here we just use danger wow it's a danger zone coming into this weekend the goal is the games we did a little taper on tuesday wednesday body felt really good and then came in here thursday and hit the first workout [Music] [Music] [Applause] travis and noah training together with training think tank i think is a great combination when you have a guy like max el hazar sort of bringing it all together it's a pretty ideal training situation all right one down four to go noah olsen is a colorful character that i think really loves crossfit loves the community of crossfit and is hungry to get himself on top of that podium i think when he gets out there on the floor he's able to flip a switch to where he gets rid of the sort of happy-go-lucky golden retriever type guy and becomes you know a straight-up stone cold assassin on the competition floor an easy workout because it's easy and you should be able to just hammer it not have to strategize not have to break you can go really hard which makes it hurt a little more sometimes [Music] jake ended up getting me by i think two seconds i don't think there was anything that i could have done on that one to have gotten him because i didn't trip on my double unders i transitioned relatively quickly i think he just had a little bit of a faster cycle speed on some of the other movements and that's where he took the cake having max have this many high caliber athletes come together under one gym you're going to get a lot of people that are pushing themselves past what they want to do [Applause] i was like come on come on buddy i was trying to keep up with a little geeky poo his strengths are my weaknesses as you would call it and vice versa so we both depending on the workouts push each other to a limit i think we're kind of uncomfortable with but making strides in the right direction to get better at what we need to get better at nothing that i could have done to get you you just got me because you're faster on that one thank you good job good to see you man how do you beat no good time it's hard it's very rare um that's the first time i've done it in a competition and you gotta enjoy it you know they don't come around too often but of course it's a strict handstand push-up workout it's my best movement in crossfit he's really good at it too so i gotta be like that good not flawless to beat him i've realized over the years that in order for i think anything to be sustainable meaning for you to be able to do it for a long period of time it has to be enjoyable we all want to be very successful but we're having a lot of fun we're enjoying the process and enjoying doing it together [Music] there's a certain amount of performance anxiety that comes with competing in a sport like this especially when you are at the top and people say that you maybe are the favorite the nights before competing oh man i'm restless as can be in bed thinking about worst case scenarios and what if this and if i let these people down the physical stuff has never really made me want to quit but the mental stuff i've had times for sure before a competition where i'm like i'm so uncomfortable with the way that i feel internally externally right now that i don't know if i want to do this again but then you perform really well and you get to celebrate with your friends and family and you feel it pay off and you're like okay it's all worth it well dude two freaking workouts to go and it's all over yeah your favorite hey do you guys want to just do the other two now i'm done no i bet no one else get out of here don't follow his advice pretty solid day one i actually am proud of myself and the way that i executed quarterfinals [Music] the way that i was able to frame and maintain my mindset throughout this weekend where it was go in execute to the best of your ability one time on each test walk away feeling satisfied i did exactly that if you were going to compare noah olsen to anything on earth it would be just a big happy golden retriever he's always got a smile on his face always super positive i just feel like he's out there chasing cars all the time and he finally got a hold of one in 2019 and again in 2020 and now he's figuring out okay i know what to do when i actually get a hold of the car he has the potential to stand atop the podium in the crossfit games it's just a matter of him putting together a clean run [Music] [Applause] [Music] don't be a whims hey [Music] i knew if i dedicated my time and spent it correctly like i can still do what i want to do and accomplish what i want to accomplish with children and for me that's almost is more of incentive and more of a reason for my why and what drives me every single day is to show them like never give up keep chasing your dreams regardless it's taken me a while to get to the point i am and the belief that i am now starting to have in myself and trust myself and the coaches even more and the programming and how we're doing things [Music] he has this uncanny ability to show up when it matters he's a competitor he has a great athletic base that not a lot of crossfitters have that allow him to be successful in some of the strangers kind of outside of your gym type of events and i think between the years he's more squared away than anybody out there [Music] travis mayer is here to prove that he is just as fit and just as worthy to be on the podium as his training partner noah olsen the goal for me is still to win the games that's why i'm training to do this i'm not just doing this to come in here and take 12th or 15th i think it's just each stage you're getting closer and closer to where i need to be and i'm excited to see what happens i don't think anybody would be shocked if at the end of the weekend at the crossfit games travis mayer is standing up there with a medal around his neck [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] my event but what's weird is they said event one was accepted already and then they came back with that it says the score on your video has been has received a minor penalty because he did not meet the movement standard for the dumbbell hang power cleans a few reps you failed to start the movement with your arms fully extended we're not going to be the only ones now that you guys understand darn i don't have any i wonder if it's worth uh mine says valid though when i go in matter good does that mean it's just because i have weird arms man i got gorilla arms it looks like they're just admit it you were cheating i can't can't just be real you were cheating i mean clearly i mean i got i got i got talked to so i was cheating too during the quarterfinals athletes must record and submit videos of their workouts and those videos are carefully scrutinized by a team of judges is to make sure the scores are indeed good okay all right this is clear what needs to happen here major handing down a major penalty on this one yeah the scoring team for quarterfinals has a really important job essentially what they are doing is making sure that the work the athletes said that they did in the time that they did it is indeed the work that they did in the time that they did it danny spiegel is getting a time adjustment why is that because the clock says 247 when she lands and it's oh yeah got the same thing too they take their jobs of upholding the integrity of the competition very seriously and nothing is going to stand in the way of them doing that the right way oh where to begin on this one you want to hear a surprising thing guess who has the fastest time right now no guesses it's tia okay three seconds we got a penalty well they are making sure that people are adhering to the rules of the competition to the spirit of the competition and making sure that this is as fair as possible and then when they do see a problem they hand out a penalty so uh measuring the box everything's great and then the hand gripping the side not only would it be on the line but it is a different position fundamentally then yeah it's easier there's there's no question if you didn't think it was going to give you an advantage why did you do it right yeah so we're an agreement major penalty yep i think a lot of people have this perception that when videos come in judges sort of just look at them once or twice maybe pay half hearted attention to him and then just kick him down the line and that is not what dave and adrian do oh oh actually go back that plate is bigger yeah it looks like it right on the other side they go through these videos with a fine tooth comb and if there's a no rep in there if there is a problem they are 100 going to find it [Music] well after the open when i saw like people incoming for the quarterfinals and i saw like top names for the quarterfinals and i was not on that like i get that fire like i'm like okay you don't have me on the list i'm gonna show you like you should have had me on that list it's uh with the crossfit it's really nice actually it's like a bit off the city but they have to hide for the road climbs so we switched from zoo to come here and yeah it's really nice adrian moonville is an athlete that if he can get out of quarterfinals he's going to be dangerous he's not a guy who likes to compete virtually he really likes the in-person setting if he can find his way to one of the semi-final events then on to the games he's dangerous last time he was at the crossfit games of 2019 and he finished inside the top ten he was eighth overall so he's a guy who knows how to compete on the big stage unveiler will hit that and adrian munweiler is going to take third goominson will finish in four [Applause] [Music] the quarterfinal is still like a step closer to the games you have to do the top six there at the end no one cares anymore if you finished first in the quarter final or 30th or 60th as long you made it to the semi-final my all-time goal in crossfit is still like podium at the games and going into the season had a really good feeling this year could happen the big name fraser is gone so it's one more spot on the podium there are like 10-15 people who can fight for that podium [Music] so day one we started with the test number one the handstand push-up workout finished seven in europe happy with that score we decided to do the front squat because it's nice to lift heavy when you're fresh i had the number before the workout in mind so like 180 would be pretty epic put on 181 uh the first one felt easy i was like oh i'm gonna make this and then on the second rep something in my right knee like clicked a little bit i had since a few weeks issues in my patella in the knee and that pain came back and i was like i had to drop the braid and just like stop that i was like hoping the pain goes away after that we did the snatch and burpee workout [Music] like that workout executed well [Music] my knee got worse and worse for the pistol like i literally started to warm up i couldn't do any pistol on my right leg and then i started to get worried i was like oh [ __ ] so we started taping knee sleeves trying different shoes tried to make the best of situation and i put pressure on it because then you push it pressure on the patella and then it's like i have to do that workout otherwise i'm out of the season [Applause] [Music] i was hoping that the pistols would get less painful when i get warmer maybe the adrenaline helps if the first 60 they felt horrible and i was like the 50 will be better in the next round of 50 it was even worse and i was like [ __ ] [Music] i'm coming from ice hockey i had probably hundreds of injuries i played with broken bones but yeah that was something of the worst experience i've ever had this workout can destroy my season and i didn't want to make that happen so that kind of make the pain a little bit better maybe [Music] [Applause] [Music] imagine if someone would like shoot in your knee with a pistol i think that's how it felt for 150 reps for me [Music] yeah i was screaming to try to make the paint bit better like a little kid place 200 something in the ghd and i was just like yeah i was hoping it's not that bad but then as soon as i started see the leaderboard and placed 70 first and i got shocked i was like like you know the first shock you see because you see the top 60 goes to the semi-final you have to be hundred percent and i think that makes the crossfit season so interesting no one is set and you're never safe and you can never be in your head that you are safe because then you lose i think i'm too experienced now or i have a good self-confidence that i know that i'm in a good shape when i'm injury-free and i hope i can show that at the semi-final [Music] every year we tend to have some newcomers who make some noise early in the season mal o'brien and emma carey have done just that but they are continuing that here in the quarterfinals i am how comfortable are you with doing the warm-ups oh i do and i think that tonight like i love the front squat warm-up you gave me um and i will do the ghd rope climb pretty much immediately after i think this is really really good for you it's morning pretty much emma carey is the rare combination of god-given talent a maniacal drive to win and the maturity beyond her young age emma carey who was a teen champ was obviously very impressive in the open this year but it'll be interesting to see how things go for her in quarterfinals considering skill goes up weight goes up so how will she compare to the rest of these individuals under those circumstances i don't have a clear goal for quarterfinals just kind of like in the open keeping the focus on semi-finals and the games but really i want to make a statement not necessarily to everyone else even though that's fun i just want to make a statement to myself and keep building that confidence [Music] [Applause] [Music] i think she still has a very good perspective on things and knows that despite the fact that she is so good at such a young age she still has a long way to go i still have one more year as a team but i don't want to take that year [Music] to me there's no better way to prove to myself that i can qualify for the 2021 games as an individual woman than to give myself no other options i know there's a chance i could fail and that failure would be heartbreaking but i don't believe that i will and that's why i'm taking this step [Music] marshfield is my hometown it is approximately 6 000 people and it is a wonderful place to be from and to live in it's just kind of your typical small town america with a couple of cafes and heartfelt community i've lived in marshfield my whole life so i've always felt very connected to the community i've always felt like i was a part of something greater and always wanted to represent that really well i started crossfit in may of 2014 when i had just turned 10. emma started crossfit basically because i decided to take a leap and do something for my health he would go to class and then he would come home and tell emma and i about the workouts and she fell in love with crossfit through hearing about crossfit from mike she did the kids class at the beginning she was like 10 years old and you know she was just she was just fell in love with it immediately we attended aid competition in springfield missouri she got to meet some really good athletes brooke wells happened to be there and was absolutely amazing to her you know really paid attention to her talk to her and it wasn't too long after that that i think ten-year-old emma decided that she was going to win the crossfit games [Music] our affiliate owner jason they said it'd be easier to be president of the united states than to win the crossfit game she said that's crazy [Music] i did not personally realize how big a goal that was now here we are pushing towards that mark [Music] her mom she'll cook for whatever she needs and then her dad is her rock her support system you know and he's even her training partner too so that's really cool [Music] i know i'm working hard and so many months without competition i didn't know if it was paying off i knew i was getting better but i was hoping i was getting better relative to everybody else too i believe that qualifying for semifinals not only will be an awesome learning experience but will be one step closer to getting to the games [Music] emma carey will one day stand on the cross against podium and it's probably going to be sooner rather than later we haven't seen outside of hayley adams any teen cross over into the individual division successfully especially before hitting the age of 18 and i'm going to go out on a limb and say i think emma carey has it it is 2 51 and we are waiting for scores to come in and i thought about not looking at the leaderboard um but i decided to because it can either be fire to stay on top or a fire to get on top i don't feel like the movements have necessarily been my strongest but i love getting to test that because it shows how far they come okay i'm in 11th with 32nd on the first one and then 14th on the second so a little lower than i thought i would be um on the second one honestly but still like still a good spot to be sitting in i think emma's performance in the open has had a tremendous impact on our confidence i finished second in the open this year right behind tia i had so much fun and honestly exceeded my expectations it was a great way to say you know what you belong you're strong enough your hard work your ethics have paid off you've done what you need to do [Music] i am fired up just knowing how much work i have to do and how many improvements i can still make even when i'm not satisfied i can be so excited for the future because i have a long career ahead of me and so many improvements left to make and that's why i keep working whenever i don't win i am not happy with the outcome no matter how happy i am with each individual performance i feel like i've left a water and i cannot be satisfied [Music] he beat what i thought by a lot so 307 killed it three two one [Music] it would mean everything for emma to get to the games this year it would be the culmination of her goal and her dream that she set for herself so proud she has worked to be there she deserves to be there and she's going to do absolutely everything in her power to win [Music] nothing can stop me no amount of hurt is going to stand in my way [Music] i think emma carey has what it takes to be in the elite field of individual women did you uh go to a dark place a very dark place [Music] we are checking the final leaderboard so i have been in first place after yesterday and i would really like to hold that was not super happy with how i did on test five but it was my best and i feel like i know exactly what i need to work on moving forward into semifinals regardless i am so proud and still hopeful it's a win i always want to win so even though i hadn't specifically set a goal for quarterfinals the only way i truly would have been happy was if i won okay i dropped fourth still fourth place i'm really proud to have finished fourth that shows me that i belong but that also shows me that i have some work to do because i want to be the best being driven to chase a big dream is a lot better than being satisfied i have a list i'm going to be talking to my coach soon and i want a plan because i've never been more fired up if i am going i am going to win nothing is going to stop me and you will see me in madison [Music] we're in knoxville tennessee at the mid-atlantic crossfit challenge i think this is where people get make or break so i'm really excited for it the power of the mullet compels you you know what if he wins the crossfit games this year i'll grow mullet when you drop an athlete like tia toomey into a field everybody immediately knows that they are competing for second place [ __ ] what if i don't make it the granite games are one of the semi-final events that qualifies athletes to the games the only thing standing between you and a good performance is how bad you're willing to hurt chandler smith is absolutely flying through the first part of this event i work just as harder harder and want it more than anyone else regardless of my age we didn't come here to participate we came here to make a statement we came here to win knock knock madison mal o'brien's for real
