Arguably the greatest jazz record ever made.
One of the best albums of the 20th century IMO.
I listened to this album front to back for the first time last fall. I’m not a jazz fan, but I was blown away by how great this album was. Just an absolute masterpiece. I get how it is so popular.
Gotta be the nerd and point out that this is not cool jazz, but is actually a later variant of bebop called modal jazz. Cool jazz is much more “composed” and can involve bigger horn sections and an almost (sometimes deliberate) classical approach. Good examples of cool jazz would be from Miles’ earlier album Birth of the Cool.
Edit: it’s actually more often referred to as “straight ahead” jazz, as modal jazz refers more generally to the way the instruments play over a lack of chord changes. Jazz nerds usually reserve the modal jazz label for the wilder stuff like Coltrane’s quartet and Miles 2nd great quartet
Hands down the best song on the top 5 best album of the 20th century. Bill Evan’s take 3 version is even better. IMO, it’s the best jazz song of all time, my absolute favorite.
When Earth is finally visited by super intelligent extraterrestrial life, this album shall be the example set forth to prove that we humans are worthy of our place in the universe. Absolute peak art right here.
Hell yeah, next jazz album let’s get some wild Sonny Rollins hard bop shit and really get people out of their pants.
It's Kind of Blue
