I got my brother from another mother here you know all good in the hood yes sir listen and I think that's great is told through stories and and I just yeah it's been documented but I want to know a little bit about just briefly the type of childhood that you had growing up oh hey check this out um I go up I grew up mom that's intersting I grew up Oh No I grew up in Brooklyn New York listen at one time it looked nice and then I realized that um we had to move in them the more we moved to talker I got the best white people we saw you know I started in Bedford Stuyvesant and it was not a bad neighborhood at that time white people lived in a neighborhood and all that stuff and then I'm something happened I guess hard times or something and we had to go and we went there from beste Stuyvesant we went to brown Hill and browns it was just whoa real aggressive and black mm-hmm you know anything is capable whatever the keeper whatever could be done to the human being is being done anything that could be done to him and being down there it's being done and it was you and your in your mother and he my mother my sister my brother everybody in my family was smart they know how to read write their works they were phenomenal way and I didn't know how to do that uh-huh uh-huh was academics I mean was that stressed growing up and that just wasn't who I was just wasn't who you were okay wasn't who I was I was the guy I saw guys on the corner yes like everybody I saw them on the corner and I realized on the corner nobody with those guys you know if they had fight they fought in the corner among themselves or whatever but I know nobody outside of that crew mess with those guys in the corner you know so I wanted to be a street guy so bad he's gonna be a street guy so bad I don't know why because I was always getting beat up a bully and people were taking stuff for me huh yes I was I grew up I didn't feel safe at home my mother like I say my mother um very promiscuous my father's a pimp gangster my father died mmm oh mmm but yeah so I I'm really dark mm-hmm really talking my dark and they're gonna sort of like huh yeah that's what I that's who I am see you know I just told you that story about a lot of people know the star in here but real quickly you know how I had a bully you know somebody came to beat me up every day it's just it's so interesting to hear you say that that people tried to pick on you as a kid whoo it's interesting man this thing I wanted to me while I'm a because I'm a punk and I'm victim that's why could they can yeah and off of that though you said I'm gonna did you want to be a boxer was that something that you wanted to be growing up like how did how did boxy and come into it hey so it wasn't a thing of self-defense for you it was just no listen my first fight I used to I'm a pigeon guy with Frye putting a flat birds pigeon yeah oh um my first fight this guy uh took one of my pigeons and so I stopped leading my bird back he's old the guy must have been nine he must have been 15 or 12 15:33 is a teenager and he gave my brother is the you said so he took my birds he clipped my bird's head off and he hit me with the bird mm-hmm and some other guy that used to beat me and believe me he's a young man fighting back he he is sitting there he it's got everybody said this man you got to do something and um I fought back I never fought nobody before I fought back and know what I can fight real good mm-hmm so after that everybody will bring out the kids from different neighborhoods around to fight me for money really so I was fight for money yeah well you know guys give me the side we just fight people from different neighborhoods and stuff and um that's all the time I thought to do so I was I was uh I was really late listen I'm not showing off a practice I was just really a good fighter yes it's born I'm scared if I'm a chicken BAM it's a good fighter oh uh-huh nicely spirit to fight yeah but I'm afraid I'm scared I'm I'm I'm that world I mean scared I'm a victim uh-huh and then um I got a rock that we came a criminal I'm knocking people out taking their money so it's listen I'm fighting men I'm 12 years old and I'm 11 years old I'm fighting men I'm up men 20 years old mm-hmm so I'm gonna become the knockout God knocking out guys then we're going in their pockets and so that's my whole life has been violent and I'm not a violent person yeah isn't that crazy I don't know I believe you I feel like that allows me yeah so I've um I cause I get locked up and I go to sparf it and then spaus it it's not 79-78 and then spar for one day Mohammed Ali comes and visit the kids the rest of it you know the kids that are up in this juvenile detention and then I said the people that I'll kick their ass or some another staff there I feed him crying I've seen him I see Elliot crying I bet you know why he picks on him and so later on a couple of months I do in sports so I go to another place they ship me off to another place in this place if the gentleman named Irish Bobby still hit the packs professional fighters at least he started teaching me how to box kicking my ass but then he started teaching me here's one to let you know English I'm the man you know I had a reputation in the institution system so you had to check me right I'm only 12 or 13 at the time well I was a monster man oh man mm-hmm but anyway listen right so he takes me to custom ATO and um he teaches me how to boxing when I first go there now I see cuts his houses mantas Victoria imagine I think to myself cuz i'm a rob these white stupid crackers gonna let me come in their house and they gonna look out for me stupid white and um I started talking to him and you said do you know um you know tiny smells you're looking at something and listening as a pervy buffet want to me or something so what for you but he's building my confidence he's telling me look at the mirror tell yourself how beautiful you are love this this is your life right now this is he introduced me to the mirror the mirror through my life ever since before mom was making what kind of mirror I'm in love with myself but then when I'm at the mirror I'm talking low so um well he started teaching I met custom Otto and he's just blew my mind uh-huh but um if you listen to me people name their children after you uh-huh yes it's tell me it's blowing my ego up yes like you know he made me believe that was better than everybody which was wrong but how would a how are you able to accept that to be able to accept that easily was this the first time anybody in your life has ever told you something like that listen um I came here to rob these white people these stupid white gonna bring this I'm from the gutter in the house and treat him like a family stupid white and then I'm uh I became a slave to him mm-hmm I needed it and it's a big word I needed him to say it that's okay can I do that he became much he became my conscious uh-huh uh-huh but there's something like if I can go up to somebody right now and go hey you know what you're destined for greatness a lot of people like 9 I'm not going all that I lived with him till he has to work on me a chance to peel those layers break me down and build me back up uh-huh what were some of the things he would tell you that was like man I got this like to because I'm a big believer we talked about this like you've listened once you give a person confidence that cannot be stopped no and let me just tell you this ok I'm not going to go through all the basics when they um the second 1980 I leave fight Larry home mm-hmm we go to Albany New York with McKenzie we go 30 miles and off to Albany New York and we watch it on pay-per-view and I'm after that fight after the fight we got in the car no one talked till he chose 30 miles back to Catskill we all open the door we're over to our rooms we never talked the next morning that Custer's on the phone Muhammad Ali and well my feelings are going back there Ali is calling I mean cuss is calling Larry home so is it bad how do you let that bum hit on you Jim Riley Howie's a bum I let that bumpier you know cuz these numbers getting sensitive you know emotional is a bump almost crying he's a bum wait a minute you light on beer oh oh so I talked Ali on the phone he said I have a 14 year old kid he's gonna be heavyweight champ of the word name is Mike Tyson please tell him to listen to him he don't know I heard him say that I was listening I'm always live Tammy talks on the phone talking to very important people sometimes Norman Mailer Lee bud shurberg all these great writers and stuff so I'm always on the side here what he's talking about my stuff and he said the young black e15 Saints will be Champa were coming to listen to me so he called me and I didn't know dude so I was on the phone I'm on the phone I'm crying and he was saying but I said when I get big I'm gonna kill him for you my revenge I'm a father that's some stupid I will restore your honor 14 of 15 1984 something like that my bum I got a couple amateur fights I'm unavenged great mahalia laughs he didn't even listen to he's still talking yesterday they're fed and then January 22nd I'm fighting then Ali comes into the ring instead get him for me mmm you know and I did that but is really yes can't mom how great of a fighter Larry Holmes is yeah you
