connect around a shared interest of eight other fathers and sons that father joined this sunday with his wife and son and mother-in-law for our 11 30 service and is excited about connecting to our of you who are watching online our children have begun practices for our children's christmas musical and we're very excited about what's happening there for students in the crowd our youth ministry tonight if you'd please open your bibles to psalm 37 while you're turning there psalm 37 i thank you brother jury for teaching with me our apostolic identity series that he concluded last week and i was out of town labor day weekend i appreciate the message by brother joel our youth pastor brother joel johns be strong be courageous i was able to watch that later and i feel like the lord through our 60th anniversary reminded us of how faithful he is to us and encouraged us that we can win this fight amen we can be saved and we can be a revival church that is not afraid to step into the future boldly as god directs us amen so we're finished with apostolic identity uh it was important that we cover that material carefully and systematically but i want to teach tonight from the word of god something is probably just a stand-alone message psalm 37 25 i have been young and now i'm old yet have i not seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread i'd like to speak to you on the proper perspective the proper perspective please be seated and thank you for standing and engaging in worship the word perspective refers to a particular attitude towards something a way that you regard something your perspective is your point of view and your point of view can be cloudy it can be clear your perspective may be right your perspective may be wrong so it is important that we not trust our own perspective but that we obtain the proper perspective in our culture people often refer to truth as my truth the way i see it rather than an objective reality of truth in the absolute word of god god's word we know is forever settled in heaven jesus christ is the same yesterday today and forever and the kingdom of god we were just singing about is established on the absolute nature of god and the absolute nature of god's word that it is infallible in aaron in every way and that it will stand forever heaven and earth shall pass away the bible said but my word shall never pass away we understand the bible to be the infallible eternal word of god in the bible presents the proper perspective i learned a definition of wisdom years ago that i believe is accurate and i've applied to my life personally that wisdom is seeing life or life's difficulties from god's perspective the bible said in psalm 14 and psalm 53 that foolishness right is believing that there is no god that you can have a proper perspective absence of god's point of view that is revealed in the bible but to have the proper perspective we've got to bring our viewpoint into alignment with the biblical point of view with gods life can shape us to have a particular perspective and i'm thinking now about negative or positive you could be suspicious of life you can have all kinds of perspectives on life but our perspective can also be a matter of choice based on how we choose to see the world i've observed in the bible and through years of working with people that satan's one of satan's tactics is to make you myopic to make you very short-sighted like the myopic mr magoo of ancient cartoon fame that you can't see very far at all and you live your life fumbling around and bumbling and bumping into everything in life you don't have the long look you only see the short-sighted view and i believe satan works overtime to cloud our vision to cloud our mind to confuse us so we can only see the present to go for immediate gratification instead of long-term blessing this is what satan attempted to do to jesus in the temptations now matthew 4 and luke 4 record these temptations but in luke chapter 4 verse 5 the devil taking him up to a high mountain showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time it was like for jesus satan flashed the great kingdoms of the world just quickly by him he saw everything all at once and the devil said to him all this authority i give you and their glory for this has been delivered to me and i give it to whomever i wish he's the prince and power of the air satan was offering jesus the kingdoms of the world without a cross without suffering without becoming sin without death and satan said to jesus therefore if you will worship before me all will be yours you understand that what he tried to do is get jesus to forget that glory would follow suffering for the glory that was set before him the bible said he endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of god so satan's tactic one of his tactics in our lives is to cloud the long look to make us forget what it the payday that's coming for the child of god and only see what is right at hand the enticement to sin is mostly an appeal to the senses not to reason sin never makes sin it is never logical and consequences seem to be irrelevant until the sting of sin bites us and it's too late and we realize that we have rejected god's word and god's long-term blessing for short-term or instant gratification so this message that i'm teaching tonight is topical in nature a theme of scripture that is very interesting to me and i read from psalm 37 tonight a psalm attributed to david that provides the proper perspective confusion is clear when we get the proper perspective david makes statement after statement in psalm 37 to help us focus our view of life through the lens of truth look at psalm 37 1. he's instructing us and trying to help us not be confused by the success of people around us who are sinners who are godless and to not look at the short term but the long term psalm 37 1 new king james version do not fret because of evildoers nor be envious of the workers of iniquity for they shall soon be cut down like the grass and wither as the green herb so david is saying this by the inspiration of the spirit because we're prone to look at famous successful and wealthy people as if maybe there's something wrong in life why are they blessed we think they're blessed why are they prosperous and maybe we are not in verses 7 through 11 he gives us some more information and this is a longer psalm i'm not going to go through every verse he tells us verse 7 rest in the lord wait patiently for him do not fret because of him who prospers in his way because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass cease from anger and forsake wrath do not fret it only causes harm for evildoers shall be cut off but those who wait on the lord they shall inherit the earth for yet a little while the bible phrases it like this hold on don't get impatient you may think it's a long time but just wait a little while and the wicked shall be no more indeed you will look carefully for his place but it shall be no more but the meat shall inherit the earth jesus quoted psalm 37 11 as one of the beatitudes the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace in verses 16 through 24 i don't have these verses to be displayed he talks about the perspective on possessions he said a little a little bit of possessions that a righteous man has is better than riches of many wicked people for the arms of the wicked shall be broken but the lord upholds the righteous the lord knows the days of the upright and their inheritance shall be forever they shall not be ashamed in evil time and the days of famine they shall be satisfied but the wicked shall perish and the enemies of the lord like the splendor of the meadow shall vanish into smoke they shall vanish away the wicked borrows and does not repay but the righteous shows mercy and gifts for those blessed by him shall inherit the earth but the curse by him shall be cut off the steps of a good man are ordered of the lord and he delights in his way though he fall he shall not be utterly cast down for the lord upholds him with his hand i just want to remind you of my theme tonight on the proper perspective david is seeing how people get mixed up confused and lose their way by thinking that the life of the godly person is not going nearly as well as the life of the godless person and he wants to remind us that their prosperity their success is just for a little while and then in verse 25 the key verse of this message tonight david says i have been young i remember david said when i was a young man and now he said i'm old i have a perspective of living a long long time and in all the days of my life i have not seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread he's sharing a perspective that only comes with time with experience spiritual insights that you only gain by living a while david said at one time he was young and when he was young he was observant and he never saw a righteous person abandoned by god he never saw a righteous person begging bread according to this verse but when you're young you don't know how things will turn out over time maybe this living for god thing doesn't really pay off over the long haul now you can be young and brilliant but you can have 60 years of life experience when you're 20 years of age i know criticism of 20 year olds 20 year old people that are serving god you can learn a lot even at a young age from the experiences of other people and you can be wise beyond your years the bible says that the stories of old testament bible characters were written for our learning they are examples to us that we would not repeat the same mistakes so you can be young and you don't have to go to the school of hard knocks where the school colors are black and blue from the bruises you've gotten for all the mistakes you've made in life you can learn the wisdom of the bible and the wisdom of the experiences of other people that's the fascination of the bible so it's important to see that but but time david said i have been young and back then i saw that god's people were blessed but he said now i'm old and i have a proper perspective i've watched over decades of my life how that god has never abandoned his people david the older man said the same thing that he had observed in his youth i have been young and now i'm old yet have i not seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed nor his descendants begging bread this past sunday when we celebrated our 60th church anniversary it really was an amazing time the theme that i felt from the beginning of this whole campaign to lead us to this past sunday was 60 years of faithfulness 60 years 60 years of faithfulness as i thought back and relive some of the stories that i have been told all the way back to a handful of people gathered in a basement it was the faithfulness of god and you know life has seasons and they're not always pleasant times and when we try to assess our lives or even try to look at the assessment of our church over a week or a month or a year there's a very good chance that we will judge foolishly what god is doing but when we stretch out and look back over 60 years it gives us a much clearer perspective a proper perspective that god has never abandoned us i've never seen god's people forsaken amen in any way nor his seed begging bread david said amen you know we believe in our church team that it is important to do honest assessment to not fake it till you make it things are not going well to try to find a way to make course corrections and get back on track however when i look back over my life when i look over the history of this church i can see that the hand of god has been leading us and guiding us and protecting us and there's some things that only make sense in the context of time and experience where you can look back and say i have never seen the righteous forsaken it is the proper perspective that time alone teaches the lord led our family here a little over 26 years ago 26 years and a month i was amazed at who seemed to adapt the quickest you would think that the older people which i now count myself part of would have really struggled with change this 39 year old pastor soon 40 right after i came i was amazed i didn't expect it but it was the elders of this church who had lived a while who knew that it's going to be all right because they knew what david knew that i've never seen the righteous forsaken and his seed begging bread amen times change people come and go people are infallible but there is a faithful god and when you see god's hand at work in your life it is the proper perspective amen david had lived long enough to know he had been young now he was old and he had never seen god fail not one time it is a proper perspective to believe that god always performs what he promises that god always finishes what he starts that he that has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of jesus christ it is a proper perspective to believe that god takes care of his people in a week or so we'll announce the grand total a total of our move the mission offering it is staggering in a good way it is phenomenal it is mind-boggling it is humbling as a leader and when you allow people to just step out in faith and do what god leads them to do i've learned that it is god that blesses but i don't have to worry about that that god is going to bless his people when we are faithful and obedient to him god takes care of his people i have been young he said and now i'm old but i've never seen the righteous forsaken his verse 26 said he is ever merciful and he lends and his seed or his descendants are blessed psalm 73 helps lead us helps bring us to a proper perspective psalm 73 is similar in many ways psalm 73 is not a psalm of david it's attributed to a man named asaph who also was a prolific psalmist he takes us along a ride a journey that he was on from skepticism to faith psalm 73 1 he said truly god is good to israel to such as are pure in heart that's how he sets this psalm up that god is good but then he says but ask for me my feet from my perspective he said my feet had almost stumbled my steps nearly slipped for he said this sounds a lot like psalm 37 37 73 right for i was envious of the boastful when i saw the prosperity of the wicked right away you see that asap's reasoning is flawed that his perspective is skewed he does not at all have a proper perspective he's not looking at god's word he's looking at the prosperity of wicked people and now he's confused he's thinking that serving god doesn't really pay verse 13 he says surely i have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocence have you ever in your life don't raise your hand please have you ever in your life wonder does this living for god really pay off 10 weeks of apostolic identity seriously is that all necessary this serving god you know taking up my cross to follow him asaph is really confused his perspective is skewed because he's looking at the wrong thing he really feels this way he feels like he has wasted his life serving the lord the bad guys are prospering the good guys are being pummeled and plagued he even uses that word verse 14. he said for all the day long i have been plagued and chastened every morning that's the way he feels and when he tries to ascertain why the wicked were prospering while he was being plagued verse 16 he said when i thought how to understand this it was too painful for me so i just couldn't bring myself to just really wrestle this down to the ground and understand the truth of this i've wasted my time serving god the wicked are doing good i'm being chastened and plagued and it's just too it's too hard for me to even figure out this is where many people make an eternal mistake they have a perspective that leads him to a faulty conclusion he sees the wicked prospering and he concludes that i've serving god i'm serving god in vain i've washed my hands in innocency i've done this for nothing this is not paying out off at all a faulty conclusion an improper perspective it's like a formula that doesn't seem to work an equation without a solution so the tendency of many people when they reach a place like asaph is to just stay away sorted out in their own mind i've learned that it doesn't matter if you're brilliant or slow you cannot ever figure out what does not make sense to the natural mind asaph later says to the lord i was as a beast before you what does he mean by that i was like a beast i was without understanding i was not thinking properly i had a horrible perspective i was living like an animal the bible calls people brute beasts and evil beasts you know people that have lost all moral footing in their lives but then asap did something that's pretty special in verse 17. until i went into the sanctuary of god now my message tonight is not about attending church but but that that's good too right he's got this messed up perspective he's looking at wicked people all he can see is how good they're doing and and he just works this all out in his head and he tells himself this is not making any sense it's not paying off i'm living for god and it's not this in vain but when he goes into the sanctuary of god god allows his mind to fast forward to the end of the sinful life and then he begins to see a proper perspective surely he says in verse 18 you set them in slippery places you cast them down to destruction oh how they are brought to desolation as in a moment they are utterly consumed with terrors a trip to church cleared his vision aligned his perspective to god's point of view amen now i believe in going to church we do not we believe in not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together but again that's not my point tonight but getting in the presence of god getting in the word of god getting among the people of god amen somehow brings us back to the proper perspective amen you've got to get your eyes on jesus christ and take your eyes off the storm and the wind and other people if you're going to get the proper perspective amen praise god my entire tenure here over and over at various times privately and publicly i've said to people don't quit coming to church and if you have to watch online tonight i'm not saying this to condemn you but if you can get here please get here but i've said to them don't quit coming to church you may be struggling spiritually you may be really confused you may not you may not make any sense at all maybe like david was in psalm 37 you may be like asaph was in psalm 73 but get into the presence of god get into the sanctuary where god can realign your perspective to what is really proper amen it was the presence of god in the house of god that cleared the psalmist asaph's perspective in the house of god asap got that right perspective and he realized that the wicked live in a very slippery place they prosper and then instantaneously they fall reflects on his journey from despair to hope the path that he walked to gain a proper perspective psalm 73 21 look at these verses thus my heart was grieved and i was vexed in my mind i was so foolish and ignorant i was like a beast before you i mentioned that earlier nevertheless he said i am continually with you he's kind of saying god i'm really mixed up right now but you're not going to get rid of me you're stuck with me i'm going to keep coming back until i work my way through this i've learned sometimes you have to get through something before you can get over it it might be grief or trouble or a failure in your life but just keep going just tell the lord i am ever with you you're stuck with me god amen nevertheless i'm continually with me you hold me by my right hand you will guide me with your counsel and afterward receive me to glory he asked the lord verse 25 these verses are not displayed whom have i in heaven but you and there is none on the earth that i desire beside you my flesh and my heart fail but god is the strength of my heart and my portion forever for indeed those who are far from you you shall perish you have destroyed all those who desert you for harlotry spiritual idolatry he means but it is good for me to draw near to god i put my trust in the lord that i might declare your works psalm 37 and psalm 73 give an honest look at good godly people who struggled to have a proper perspective years ago i was reading an article i searched to find it today or just some reference to it but could not but it was an article about espionage about spies and counter spies and there was an intriguing statement in that article that the best of my memory goes like this that when you enter the world of mirrors it is difficult to discern reality from reflection when you close the bible in your life and you step outside the word of god you have walked into a world of mirrors when you're not sure if that's the real or if that's a reflection if that's really true or if that is totally false satan's world is a world of mirrors and confusion is one of his favorite tactics when you look at the prosperity of the wicked and the successes of ungodly people it can be really confusing i've shared this story before at some point along the way but many years ago in my youth pastor days i was talking to a young man named john and john wasn't really all in i believe he was 14 or so but he was really liking a girl who was not godly who was not a christian not a believer in any way and i was talking to him about this relationship that i knew was not healthy that was not going to be conducive to his living for god and besides it it's just flat out against the bible dating and unbeliever and i he told me you know brother daryl he called me he said i'm i'm really confused and i i felt like the lord gave me a word of ins of wisdom i said john let me ask you a question are you confused about what is right and wrong or are you confused about what you want to do about what is right and what is wrong see he liked this girl and like eve was attracted to the fruit on the tree and like satan always has a bait his emotions were in and he kind of paused and looked down and he said i guess i'm confused about what i want to do. you see right and wrong is very clear but when you halt between two opinions as the bible said when you do not decide to do what is right you are deciding to do what is wrong and when you do not choose to obey god's word your perspective is is blurred confusion comes in your mind and i can promise you that confusion will be cleared up when you choose to do what you know is right most people make excuses about why they struggle they say things like i don't understand this great thing or this mystery about the bible or eternity or time or some prophetic statement in the bible but then if you really get down to what really matters and if you ask them about fundamental decisions about right and wrong about doing what you know is right you'll find out that underneath it all there's some measure of disobedience that is created confusion and it will cloud the proper perspective amen romans 1 speaks of people who did not like to retain god in their knowledge i want to read a few verses from romans 1 and the new living translation but god shows his anger from heaven against all sinful wicked people who suppress the church by their of the truth rather by their wickedness they know the truth about god because he has made it obvious to them forever since the world was created people have seen the earth and sky through everything god made they can clearly see his invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature so they have no excuse for not knowing god yes they knew god but they wouldn't worship him as god or even give him thanks and they begin to think up foolish ideas of what god was like as a result their minds became dark and confused claiming to be wise they instead became fools and instead of worshiping the glorious ever-living god they worshiped idols made to look more like people and birds and animals and reptiles so god abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desire as a result they did vile and degrading things with each other's bodies they traded the truth of god for a lie boy that's a bad trade they worshipped and served the things god created instead of the creator himself who is worthy of eternal praise that is why god abandoned them gave them up the king james says to their shameful desires and here is the here's a condition of a world away from god it looks like you're reading headlines from 2021 even the women turned against their natural way to have sex and instead indulge in sex with each other and the men instead of having normal sexual relations with women burn with lust for each other men did shameful things with other men and as a result of this sin they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved since they thought it foolish to acknowledge god he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done but when you wind this passage back from all the perverted debauchery of a fallen pagan world it doesn't go back to start with some immoral act it starts with knowing that there must be a god he created everything this intelligent design demands an intelligent designer and i need to feel after him and find him i need to seek him with all my heart so i can know him and you can but when they abandoned god in their thinking when they allowed the proper perspective of god to be corrupted then confusion came by disobedience back to asaph looking at all the happy sinners living it up getting rich getting by being prosperous and successful it seemed to him at that moment that there were no consequences there was no judgment but again a trip to church gave him the proper perspective in the presence of god asap's faulty perspective was really right to him it made a lot of sense to him but it was not an accurate reflection of reality it's really possible that you're thinking away right now that you feel really good about but it's as faulty as it can be and tonight my message is to call us back to the true reality of god's word and god's presence that always work together so that you can have your perspective cleared and see what is really right if you're able please stand right now in our culture there's a lot of emphasis placed on people's feelings i don't feel that that is right i don't feel that that is wrong i put this in my notes if it was possible i would jump on top of this pulpit don't help me it's glass it'll break to say to you that your feelings are irrelevant to truth with all due respect to one's feelings your feelings do not matter what really i'm talking about your feelings toward god and truth not your feelings about if your feelings are heard or you're struggling i don't mean that at all you understand your feelings about truth are irrelevant what matters is the objective reality that's revealed in god's word that will be cleared up by his spirit and i pray that god would help us have the proper perspective if you have time i'd like to invite you to come to the altar if you're able the apostle peter told us stay alert watch out for your great enemy the devil he prowls a lie around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour stand firm against him and be strong in your faith remember that your family of believers all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering that you are the apostle paul wrote of suffering that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared for the glory that be will be revealed in us the apostle paul also wrote that we should not lose heart that though our outward man is perishing our inward man is renewed day by day for our light affliction which is for but a moment is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory while we look at the things which are not seen a proper perspective amen the psalmist psalm 121 said i will lift up my eyes into the hills he said i'm i'm looking all around in these valleys but i'm i'm looking up to the mountains those pillars of creation that he said my help comes from the lord he's looking for something stable and shakeable he will not allow your foot to be moved he who keeps you does not slumber nor sleep from jesus said luke 21 when all these end time things begin to happen men's hearts are failing them for fear the powers of heaven and earth are shaken jesus said now when these things begin to happen look up lift up your heads for your redemption is drawing nigh what was he saying i think it was more than just a physical posture it was talking about our hearts looking to things eternal that will help us when our perspective is skewed our vision is blurred confusion tries to crowd out the clarity of god's word did you pray right now let's ask the lord in the sanctuary right now i love you jesus thank you lord let the clouds of confusion evaporate right now look full in the face of jesus christ things of the earth go strangely dim let jesus be the center of everything put him back put him back where he belongs in your life i'm praying right now that as you look into the eyes of the lord through the spirit that is you let the word of god become your reality upon which your life is built the clouds of confusion will dissipate the sun will come shining through in your spirit tonight jesus in your name lord god i pray lord that you would give us a proper perspective i said pray on a little while i i really feel now that someone someone was somewhat on a precipice of their faith was in question and faith is displacing doubt and confidence in the lord and his word is driving out confusion right now if you've been
