Notre Dame and in recent years they have embodied the tough personality of their coach Bo Schembechler he's back again with new vigor and a veteran defense it just made challenge for a championship if they can sort a victory against Notre Dame tonight it's one of college football's greatest matchups Michigan against Notre Dame here on CBS [Music] CBS Sports welcomes you to college football 1988 our seat is South Bend Indiana it was six years ago when these same two schools played the first night game ever at Notre Dame the crowds at 9:50 9075 a sellout the same number that we'll have here tonight is Notre Dame will sellout for the one hundred and seventy-seventh time and a matchup is a great would Michigan and Notre Dame coming up well good evening everybody and welcome I'm Brent Musburger the post Tim Brown era at Notre Dame [Applause] flankers spot let's bring in my colleague now Pat Haden because we want to talk about the man who was really under the gun and that's their young quarterback Tony writes well you know a year ago he was the first year of player playing on a very experienced offensive team but now he needs it he's got a good offensive line a new offensive line in front of him new wide receivers so he's gonna have to provide the spark that Tim Braun did a year ago and when I think this is gonna be a particular game until that time is the ratio Michigan demetria's Brown was their starter a year ago but he ran into academic difficulties he's here tonight he's eligible he can play but he will not start Bo Schembechler has turned this team over to Michael Taylor and Michael Taylor has been around he's been around for years he's a senior now and he started two games a year ago he's warmer than he is a very good offensive line in front of them in a very quick defense anyone a quarterback is no better than his offensive line and here tonight Michigan holds a big edge in that particular category the afternoon of college football let's go to New York now and here is Jim Nantz with the very latest Jim all right Thank You Brett life without Tim Brown for Notre Dame today life without Lorenzo for Michigan State the defending Big Ten champions at home against Rutgers the Scarlet Knights pull off the upset quarterback Scott Ernie with two touchdown passes this one on a tipped ball Brett Marsala picks it up 18 yard score Rutgers with the first 17 points of the game then holding on for victory the shocker there in East Lansing head coach dick Andrew said of the Scarlet Knights in our studio will join us at halftime now another big ones that I knew CLA against Nebraska the Bruins with four touchdowns in the first quarter two on touchdown passes by Troy Aikman leading it over second ranked Nebraska 28 to 7 ten minutes to go in the second quarter and of course Mara afar singing with in with us in the studio and coach your outlook now on Notre Dame in Michigan tonight well I know the fans like to sort of follow the ball offensively but I think that tonight this game may well be decided on the defensive side of the ball rather the offensive side Notre Dame last year lost its last three games gave up 400 yards a game 27 points a game they brought in a new defensive coordinator Barry Alvarez changed their strategy and tactics Michigan was not a vintage Michigan defensive team they too gave up a lot of yardage and points so the team that improved the most during the offseason may be the winner in this game specifics what can we look for if these defenses have improved I think for Notre Dame they're pass rush it was non-existent last year and for Michigan it's very important for their past defensive secondary to play well they gave up a lot of touchdown passes last season alright coach we'll look for that and of course we'll be back here at halftime scores and highlights but will rejoin Brittain Pat and South Bend after this message and a word from your local station [Music] did it seem like your air-conditioning bills were through the roof this summer well the owens-corning attic blanket helps keep the cool air in which can save you money in the years ahead [Music] according we put your house anything who flies handy weekends on seven it's a gorgeous sight isn't Notre Dame Stadium ready for a night game between the Fighting Irish and the Wolverines take a look at the college football record boy the two winningest programs of all time the Irish 78% the Wolverines 74% the coaching matchup tonight he goes against Bo Schembechler what a story he is last December there were doubts that he would ever coach again after he underwent his second open-heart surgery he's back now with no man he personifies the coach white light post Schembechler know is poor important in a team no coach there's more important than the team the team the team the team my immediate reaction was I just hope I lived through this thing looks like when I came out of the operation and in the press conference I heard the doctor saying yes he'll coach again the Wolverines [Music] [Applause] [Music] his twentieth year [Music] facilities broke out a little early here tonight for that story down to Jim jockle a ticking time bomb that's what this is you mentioned it was already a skirmish the Michigan players were leaving a field they crossed the path of the Notre Dame players there was some brushing some forums what's wrong there was some pushing and shoving the coaches had his separate the two teams and send him back into the locker room the crowd got hostile the players are short-tempered this place is ready to explode from inside the time the Fighting Irish Notre Dame the version [Music] with holes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's a matchup that starts the cleric tingle and will be coming back with a kickoff [Music] [Applause] CBS Sports presents college football live from Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend Indiana it's the Michigan Wolverines versus the Notre Dame on the floor of this stadium will be the Michigan all-purpose kicker Mike July he will kick off handle the field goals and the extra points he will also punt Michigan winning the toss they have elected to defer mark green number 24 is set back at the 1 you can he do for the uh nourish what Tim grounded so many times over the last few seasons [Applause] and it said just so the catcher on the Michigan baseball team drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals and electing to play baseball and football at Michigan it's show time in South Bend it's green at the floor [Applause] Oh Pete Tony rise soon Pat Haden told you about leading the Irish offense [Applause] Green will start at the tailback spot Braxton banks is the full-back Steve alby's and Ricky Watters waters replaces Brown and big Frank Jacobs we'll start there a tide in what should we look for early Pat well the Notre Dame will do out early in the game has come out in a lot of different formation bolts lights to probe the defense by formation and then attack in the second series they run green behind the left side and broke a tackle before he has finally brought down by John Milligan now this is a young inexperienced offensive line but they helped open that hole Mike health is the center the guards Tim Bruna Mart has experience but Winston Sondre is starting and playing in his first game Dean Brown is a tackle and Andy heck has moved from tied in to start at the other tackle second and six for rice and the Irish the pitch to green and again a hole on the left side first down on the fourth take a breath a 13-yard Dean [Applause] the defense the nose man is TJ Osman from Michigan mark Messner is your all-american tackle we'll hear a lot from him Sean Herrmann starts at the other spot inside JJ grant and John Milligan Tim Williams and Bobby Abraham's outside them facing this first and ten at the Notre Dame [Applause] is ready to bring him down the rest of that Michigan defense here are the question marks an experienced secondary Arnold is their best man back there alongside key Murray is the free safety tonight and Wellborn opens that strong second and nine and big Derrick brown the freshman from Merritt Island Florida chucks in it tight in number 86 motion with waters behind the quarterback [Applause] [Music] over the top it'll leave him third and long with mark Messner tripping him up little surprising strategy early with a young offensive line they've really decided to come out and really try to attack the strake that this Michigan defense and run the ball right out we would think with a young offensive line you might try to get outside with the optional before but they've chosen to come right after Michigan early and behind that line they've used the veteran running back Green has carried four times for 23 yards let's see if coach Holtz Falls for a pass in this third down situation places first pants he has plenty of time he overthrows his receiver incomplete stephenie's the split end out of the state of Texas was the intended receiver he had no chance on that pass one of the things Tony rice did last year was throw the ball high and Lou Holtz has spent an awful lot of time in the offseason in last spring working on just simple fundamentals with Tony rice Jim Saxton standing at his own 42:5 Michigan with a dangerous return [Music] he hangs it beautifully hi colas our lets it go toward the in-zone it'll roll in for the touchback and come out on the 20-yard line 48 yard punt Michigan's offense will now come out for its first series the quarterback Michael Taylor his running backs the full-back is Goodwin Jared bunch they hope that tony bowls will be a good one inexperienced colas are whom I spoke about and Chris Galloway that backed up by great McMurtry 3 dandy outside receivers Derek Walker is the tight end for the Wolverines first and 10 their first position possession their own 20-yard line [Applause] [Music] an offensive line bowls squirts through a hole [Music] first play both shimbun who comes out with two tight ends again he's got a nose he has an experienced offensive line I think he's just gonna try to punch it at Notre Dame early in the game here here is that offensive line first year starter [Applause] to the 25 it'll be third and five Chris orach the nose man from Chicago's vocational high school brings him down he anchors the middle of that defense George Williams and Jeff on they'll be tested by this veteran offensive line Andre Jones and Frank stamms are the outside the inside men in there good one West Pritchett Michael Stonebraker the son of the former NFL player Steve stone breaker replaced both off and on third and five [Applause] show slot incent Poway and motion behind taylor who will tow his first pass he'll drop it off here in the flat to his tailback pulls the way stop short of the first down by George screener number 27 [Applause] they rallied as you watch the screen play nice Paul gets his own defense which Notre Dame ran here and a good way to settle you a quarterback down Tanner just dumps the ball off the balls he heads north and south thinks he's going to pick up the first but three Notre Dame jerseys are there to stop him short of the first down they rallied around the ball so far a typical Midwest back Ricky Watters [Applause] 30 yard line is driven back by Gillette inside the 20 on a beautiful punt [Applause] [Applause] turns it over to the smallest Reggie home will attempt his first extra point [Applause] come on dad you thought just Toyota Camry it's got a new v6 I've wanted an affordable Camry for years charlie no really I bought it cause you'd like to look good going to church cause it's a v6 the powerful new Camry v6 Toyota quality who could ask for anything more now the whole country knows you really took the wind out of their sails the challenge is over [Music] diet pepsi is America's Choice in head-to-head taste tests Diet Pepsi challenged and you're looking for the videotape that just keeps coming back for more ask for BASF because even after five hundred plays the original brilliance always comes through if you're a student of numbers consider this iron his first punt return of 88 returns at 81 yards tim Browns number for a Notre Dame touchdown Brett what a good punt returner does it not dance around he takes the ball right upfield and that's what he does he's going to get a good block by number 37 falkowski right there and in the last bought by a freshman number 25 the last man had a chance to tackle him was delet but rot heap is mailed the true freshman Springs Joette enough to let Watters get by him for the score he just went north and south read the blocks and didn't dance around in the opening from Harrisburg Pennsylvania in for the last two weeks coach Bo Schembechler has been saying don't worry about Tim Brown they've got somebody as good a lot of folks said coaches through in scope Bo recruited him very heavily as a matter of fact the long kicker for the Irish puts it on the T Ritchey hole inside the 40 extra points from Sarasota Florida the deep end for Michigan include John coalition in their tailback to knee pose [Applause] two colas are at the six [Applause] [Music] while Penn State is on Notre Dame's future schedule let's get an update from Jim there's been some question marks about how good were the Nittany Lions they're answering that question just wearing out in Virginia third quarter here's a touchdown pass Tom Bill's to Gary Brown 42 7 in the 3rd Blair Thomas did not suit up for Penn State back to Britain cap Jim Thank You Blair Thomas we hoped it someday soon he'll be back there uniform but their doubts as to whether or not this season for the first and ten from Michigan they trail Notre Dame's seven to nothing in the early going here and so Taylor off the fake throws complete to cool aside he is brought down by number 27 George Street nice catch by kolitar he was complain he thought it was facemask but the ball was thrown low he came open very early he had a nice little catch on the ball this again being very conservative early here the game trying to use the offensive line throwing short passes to get my container settle down Michigan offense defense the question with the Irish defense the rush the front this is polls 42 he runs into a trio of Irish complete join hit by three more the biggest difference about this Notre Dame team and particularly this defense Brent is the speed on defense watch how many guys react to the ball there's a little bit of a slam going on the left right the middle stole breaker number 42 fights off a couple of guys and he gets some help from two other people there there's tremendous speed more speed the Notre Dame has ever had on defense they hope they get some big plays out of his defense early in the year third and two and all three of the inside linebackers are now in the game net bolcar joins Stonebreaker so they show it defensive [Applause] forced Michigan to punt again as Sauron George Williams in the ball carrier if Chris Sorensen George Williams clay up from the inside backers right there to the left of your screen are going to make a lot of tackles watch the nose tackle and the left guard number 69 they get early penetration their Saurus number 50 and 47 ball cars here to finish them off Zorich on to series the nose tackle has played extremely well well on the last point Michigan gave up a touchdown for the first time since 1980 puts this one to waters who feels it on the 19 he was calling for the fair catch all the way perhaps she's still winter day will put it in play right there one yard punt return by Watters as Notre Dame ahead in the early going [Music] once there were a few men men of adventure courage still are the Marines we're looking for a few gorgeous men have you ever tried a beer and felt like the taste just missed you mouth well taste again [Music] here's one big bowl draft that backs a full-tilt ace you can get your hands around extra gold Draft it's the biggest things that's having a beer since they put it in cash ATM tea has just made once for any size business pick from a lineup of plans that give you call detail distance sensitive pricing had major leaf discounts even an international and AT&T card cause if he thought AT&T you once had just one pitch [Music] three-time defending champion a bottle and old bottle sweetie sensation mots Wilander it's the US Open final tomorrow on CBS Sports it was a lightning bolt a short time ago by Ricky Watters an 81 yard punt return that has given Notre Dame a 7 to nothing lead on Michigan here see that UCLA picking apart a good Nebraska team 38 to 7 and Florida State on the rebound against Southern Mississippi 42 to 10 next Saturday big appointment from Florida State Bobbie Humphrey Pat has had a big game in this one 50 yards and one touchdown already [Applause] Baima started off his game with only one pass in for Russia's Tilney rice [Applause] pitches to his tail [Applause] brings it around the right side Tony Brooks who was not expected to play tonight because of a stress fracture right foot with his first carry here tonight has replaced mark Greene [Applause] [Music] what's the full-back Braxton Banks number 39 he is going to make a good block any time you pitched the ball outside the full-back has got the linebacker one on one there's a nice job of blocking Milligan and that cleared the way for Tony Brooks who's got he wearing the ugliest shoes in college football you see those fake the bank's rice looking deep [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wideout from wilkes-barre Pennsylvania they sent him deep run supply and David key there with the coverage for the Wolverines but he almost broke free for six more one of the fastest high schoolers in America a year ago this is what Lou Holtz wants to be able to do this year stretch the defense come up with big plays out of his passing game who we seen 20 rice over throw to open receivers thus far [Applause] books in banks is a lone setback rice to throw on to set the screen and the overthrew banks rice has overthrown several receivers tonight it's three overthrows and I don't think he's really following through it one thing Lou Holtz said this week he was trying to work on fundamentals with Tony rice and when he throws the ball high it doesn't come off as thing your index finger he comes off his palm a little bit he's got to really follow through and haven't come off the index finger to get the accuracy third and ten the ball is near the Irish 34 yard line 14 yard line Brooks gave them a first down they have thrown two incomplete passes [Applause] this is books [Applause] the 36-yard line so Notre Dame will be forced upon the defensive series therefore Michigan Michigan's defense does a lot of Swaney and the thing the offensive lineman the young offensive line from Notre Dame have got to really watch their step hold their gaps against that defense prevents sacks Jim sextons second told us our standing back at the Michigan 14 yard line ten min up back for the return paula saw on one constant 40-yard punt he took a shot as the special teams for know today he's a brave man you have to be when you return punts I would say a table light and Pat terror will they're excellent coverage let's go down to John Decker I rented to talk along the Michigan sideline is a problem at the three linebackers Pritchard ball far and Stormbreaker trying to tell them John in this set they have two of them in there they are not showing the three inside men [Applause] decided to try the pull-down they tried bulls and in this set they will try bunch and net bull car number 47 trip team up Florida PD Mississippi 27:15 the Gators go to to know South Carolina coming up big here it is 7-nothing Notre Dame leading Michigan second Michael Taylor with the Wolverine quarterback here tonight we can hide so hot 6-foot 202 pounds number 33 Leroy hoard [Applause] before the snake Zorich getting into it with it was vitally the center [Applause] delay of game there against Michigan they tried to send Callaway emotion to too much time [Applause] that is the first penalty [Applause] fifty-two to go in the opening quarter here in South Bend [Applause] it doesn't get easy for Michigan next week either they go home and play the Hurricanes Jimmie Johnson's Miami team undoubtedly watching this game back in the comfort of their living rooms down in Miami they will play both of these schools before the year is over Michigan with a slot formation to the right now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] was gonna get off to a good start not only tonight but only in this season that defense is going to have to come up a big place that's what happened right there good coverage first allow Frank stamms enough time to make the sack on Taylor good coverage cause the sack now it's third and long great wide receivers anybody to get the ball to them well it's third and forever here I think you don't risk the intercepts who the young quarterback I expect to see them when a screen or maybe it's raw punt the ball and play defense they send goals and motion [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] his Michigan offensive line which is a surprise has been busy already electrified this crowd returned for a touchdown [Applause] to the 26-yard line he is down at the 42-yard he first intended for the hour strong leg 51-yard punt and a 16 yard return by Watters will come right back it'll be notre dame's ball they lead it 7 nothing [Music] this is a machine designed to keep you on time and this is what makes it tick [Music] working together with clock-like precision each dedicated to keeping you on schedule time after time [Music] the on time machine even in the world's most beautiful playgrounds things don't always go so beautifully but that's okay as long as you have visa gold because will not only help you get a doctor a lawyer for anything you need we'll deliver a new visa goal and emergency cash to anywhere you are anywhere in the world an emergency cash is something American Express just can't deliver visa gold it's everywhere you want to be [Music] watch to win beginning September 12th we've just taken on Easterns wheels preferred Ella and runner-up swing wheels new TV play log game watch wheel of fortune weeknights at 7:00 on channel 7 this is Jim Nantz in New York Jamel Holloway the wishbone wizard of the Oklahoma Sooners one year ago against Oklahoma State wrecking Annie having to undergo an operation and missed the Orange Bowl against Miami today Holloway back at the helm and jamming Jamel keeps it here for a score as the Sooners shut out North Carolina and identical score to last year's matchup as we go back to Brenton pack all right Jim thank you and so Oklahoma's domination against ACC teams continues with that win and here the return of post Schembechler because of that open heart surgery he missed the Hall of Fame Bowl against Alabama [Applause] [Music] by Tony rice what to find Humphrey to 81 by Ricky Watters leads Michigan 7 and with a first in ten [Applause] [Music] Thanks bring green behind the left side of that line Tony rice is that a Woodruff South Carolina because of proposition 48 he could not play as a freshman but the team loves his leadership I think slam as a person because like I want to be treated like I want to treat a person myself and everything just why the right frame of mind know what to do and like she want everybody that hey I'm in control and what if you need help I'm there to help you out and just having that leadership role contains a lot in football he faces a second and nine Brooke says checked-in for him [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 19 yards it's a nice little call there by Lou Holtz Notre Dame probably runs more traps with her fullback in the wig back than anybody in college football that time Brooks number 40 lined up on the wing they saved it the off off tackle the other way Brooks comes underneath for the trap any hick number 66 is right out in front of them but that's a nice play call by Lou Holtz we thought that Brooks and Anthony Johnson come out here on crutches and watch them this way Johnson now the fullback blocking rice rolling right [Music] mark Messner the all-american defensive lineman applying pressure on Rice that time mr. can do that too he comes clean so quickly because he's so fast off the ball he is easy to miss because he slants he's not a big guy but you can miss him quickly he puts a lot of pressure on quarterbacks matched against and ehekk and many one-on-one situations here tonight the former Notre Dame tied in our great deals second and ten [Applause] rice taking off on the option and keeping it for a first down [Applause] police in this offense is because they are so young this is the first option play Notre Dame has gone and this is one of Rice's specialties and faked the ball the inside full-back rice saw that the pitchman was taken there by the defender of a free well born so just turns it upfield north and south runners we've seen here from Notre Dame today Tony rice [Music] [Applause] thanks when he pushed down close to the 15 yard line before John wrap him up in that game The Sporting News in ranking college team before the season said that Notre Dame had the best offensive then there were several injuries and there were some doubts but in Washington here tonight they have got skill [Applause] it's that special talent alex karras ability of getting past the block and penetrating on watch how quickly he gets off the ball it's a clean it's a no hitter there by the offensive linemen there's no chance the full-back goes right by on the mark Greene has no chance right watch film of Besner this week and he'll go under you he'll go all real inside outside whatever it takes he's a little unorthodox but he gets around the ball [Music] steal [Applause] I said little Dave face and now I sketches the corner of his eye with the clock running down he sees that the coach wants timeout facing that important 1/3 down with the ball at the Michigan 20-yard line there's about a minute and a half left to the first border 1:21 to be exact and Notre Dame leading 7 to nothing and this is the start of football madness this weekend on CBS and hope you'll join us tomorrow 12:30 Eastern Time and spend some time with Dick Butkus and Irv cross and will McDonough for the NFL today and then many of you will watch the San Francisco 49ers will check in on the condition of Joe Montana they'll be taking on the New York Giants after that spectacular second half against Washington Chicago with a big win at Indianapolis off to a great start looking to play an aggressive defense it's like it's gonna be back playing Detroit in the Rams volians Atlanta Tampa Bay Green Bay those are early starts after the NFL today so it was last week Tim Brown made his debut with the Los Angeles Raiders and it was a sight to behold as Tim Brown the Raiders win 97 yards with a kickoff return and a touchdown and without a doubt Tim Brown took another early lead in his quest to repeat his Heisman Trophy winner you trying to give it to again replacement oh I didn't catch any flak this way nobody nobody complained me for being a homer it's pretty good any folks Ricky Watters is for a while will see this loosen much [Music] Holt's sending the wishbone [Music] [Applause] WAIS keeps it got to the 15-yard line and that means a field goal unit for Lou Holtz will come onto the field Nicole doesn't surprise me even though it was third and long it was a true option he was trying to get the ball outside but didn't here is a story tell us about Reggie ho from Hawaii watch his hand before he goes to this voodoo or this kungfu routine in his the anagen is Jersey I think in the bookstore Jersey - fitting to watch his hands [Applause] [Music] three more [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so the Fighting Irish leaning by Tannen is a truth Reggie ho was the leprechaun [Applause] okay I am surprised this far in the game that the Notre Dame offensive line really seemed to be controlling the tempo of his game Tracy Williams has been sent the return [Applause] it will be Bulls and Williams colas are who was shake it up it's on high short kick off bored [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] recovers and remember a year ago Michigan turned the ball over 70 to Notre Dame and here's their first one here tonight Notre Dame with another scoring opportunity teams thus far have played an exceptionally well [Applause] punt return for a touchdown [Applause] has they've recovered a fumble to get rice in the Irish the first intent at the Michigan 22 [Applause] [Music] power football for green hole on the right side [Applause] however [Applause] [Music] one of the first mistakes by that young offensive line and coach Holtz unhappy about it they've been unsuccessful throwing the ball he's going to face a first and 20 now and it'll be interesting to see whether he tries to put the ball in the air he's been unsuccessful whether to either pick at him I'll run the full-back inside try to get himself back in field goal range the coach wants to know I think you can read his lips who's it on who is guilty of holding in that sequence the offensive line that are volunteering are they no I didn't see anybody holding [Applause] nevertheless he will send out a new tackle justin hall 73 goes out there in Dean Brown number 71 circumstantial evidence I know you're an attorney but I find him guilty that's a good sign that the ground [Applause] hours behind the right side of the offensive line let's go to town doctor doctor [Applause] you mentioned [Applause] thank you very much in the first quarter [Applause] [Music] this is precious cargo telecommunications equipment on its way to Japan on another day it might be Medical Systems headed for Europe we design and build that equipment we're Siemens USA 27,000 people 47 manufacturing plants and nearly three billion dollars in sales and service electronic and electrical equipment and each year 15 percent of that is worldwide exports from America we are Siemens USA when you fly in United you're probably not aware of the 60,000 professionals working to make your trip easy or the way our new advanced terminal speed you on your way just as when you use the American Express card you're not really thinking about all the services that make frequent business fliers rated best for travel and entertainment you don't notice these things because they're there but you wouldn't notice them if they weren't going [Music] beer drinkers and knocking the doors down for the full-tilt taste of extra goal draft they're treating every cab every profile or case they can get their hands on thanks to go when a beard attacks this taste comes along this is CBS welcome back to lottery live I'm dawn Hayes it's time for megabucks tonight's jackpot is worth an estimated two and a half million dollars let's see if you'll be our next lucky winner our first number for the evening number 25 next we have number 28 and that will be followed by a very slow number 32 we're just about halfway there to an estimated two and a half million dollar jackpot our next number twenty two followed by number 26 and we're winning on our final number for this evening and that will be number two once again let's take a look at the winning megabucks number for Saturday September 10 it is 2 22 25 26 28 32 have a great night enjoy the rest of the game and I'll see you Monday for the daily number bye bye [Music] forest fires and hurricanes the tales after the game nothing because waters returned to punt 81 yards for a touchdown the Wolverines somewhat rattled here in the opening quarter at one turnover and in rushing yards the Irish with a young and experienced offensive line getting the job done the key play of the game Gillette's 53-yard punt and waters returned at 81 yards as he steps into the wall I am winning iseman trophy and waters return gives the Irish a lead [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here to be incompleted was it bounce first on the ground so it will be second and ten for notre-dame that will show you inexperience hecka converted tide in the first start for sandwich in brown tonight six starts absolutely no experience compare that with michigan's offensive line and you'll see how many times they've been out there who's our chester by tallies 35 tinglin and scrapping on his first start but he's a 300-pounder [Applause] almost intercept through to a crowd in trip well barn deflected Pony rice is still not throwing the ball well he is old for six now he's looking for Derrick brown the freshman out of Florida this guy's got an incredible wingspan and he could really develop and one of the great receivers I think in the country over the next two years is Derek brown Pat give us an overview of what we've seen here so far well I think as I said earlier what really surprises me is the dominance of the Michigan offensive line when they've run the ball it ran for over 90 yards in the first quarter watch the hands of Reggie ho and also watch the follow-through how can I move it and do it well some of you play golf some of you are too big you know the timing and the follow-through is everything let's watch the 5 4 ho [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's take a look at this beautiful University Notre Dame in South Bend a writer doing a story our notre-dame once asked the student on break what he thought of the place well it's awful the students said the work is too hard the pressure kills you but there's one great thing about being a student at Notre Dame when you're home on vacation you're able to tell people you go there for almost 150 years young people from all over our nation have been coming to Notre Dame they come not only to learn but also to learn how to live and when they go home they're proud to tell you about it Reggie ho and the rest of the Irish he is fun to watch this Reggie ho you were talking about his follow-through tremendously late with IgAN said even though he's a small band keeps their head down tremendous leg within power even though he's very very diminutive bother you English on it there is will he's it easy gotta pick up 3.86 grade point average a pre-med student walk-on kicker great on me st. Louis high school took out football we'll kick it off Williams [Music] this is polls from the two day light bulb breaks three number 32 T Juan Francisco team coming from behind and saved a touchdown but it was a great 59 yard return by Bowl this is just what Michigan needed remember special teams play about a third of the game and when your offense and defense can't do it sometimes your special teams have two balls Falls is wedgie picks up a couple of good blocks inside to see the big hole there and he's got pretty good speed with a nice little fake on the kicker somebody tries to trip him but Francisco as you mentioned the fastest player at Notre Dame puts the stop on it the first three possessions for Taylor and the Wolverines [Music] [Applause] the charge and speaking of the charge over Kentucky Georgia looking impressive they're a sleeper in the Southeastern Conference this year Washington beating Purdue it's a sad start for the Big Ten in non-conference competition so far Ohio State did look good looked in on endless afternoon against Syracuse but Michigan State was beaten by Rutgers we have not seen Michael Taylor run the option and that's what he does best [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so again the offense not going anywhere will he turn it over to Demetrius Brown what's your thoughts about that I don't thinks I don't think he'll do it this early and it keeps on me that halftime you might make a tricky change but Michael Taylor just needs to pick up a first down here I think he gave himself in position puts his points on the floor - that's what Michigan needs most right now four checks [Applause] cars two of the inside [Applause] [Music] it's a [Applause] Michigan gets a first down that was tremendous determination by horde because I thought he was going to get pulled down about a yard short of the first down markers I think he saw him and he's a strong power runner big thick legs dragged two defenders for the first down that's a big play for the Michigan offense take a look here it's a little shuffle pass inside the nice thing about this and he don't complete it it's not a fumble the easy little catch to draw the defensive lineman upfield pitch it underneath the hoard and he picks up the first down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Stonebraker was there damage was there lineman for notre dame this tonight so far we're a question more going into the game but thus far Chris torch Jeff balm and George Williams at three pound lineman for Notre Dame and really got a nice job just stopped every hole there's no lanes for the running backs to run [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Stonebraker the perfect name for a middle linebacker top right of the stream number 42 Michael stole Meg he reads to play and he's going to see that the blocks come down here and his job is just to step up into the hole Keita fullback and make the play he reaches Kesey's the guard block down finds a little hole there and is there to really put a helmet on horn [Applause] balls is back with punch signs up as the foreman [Applause] close to the nearside - McMurtry who spins gets him down fifteen is the first real pretty big cushion one is third and 6 therefore McMurtry a nice little toss out there by Michael Taylor I sense that he's got a settling down here a little bit but a nice easy throw on the out route to McCrory [Applause] well McMurtry was at number one draft choice by the Boston Red Sox passed up a contract to go into their farm system as a center fielder in Bo Schembechler says he loves football [Applause] as Florida State evens [Applause] with the pullback that time punch six to two hundred and forty pounds recruited out of the state of Ohio by Michigan Osia Meckler likes to use the wishbone inside the 20-yard line because he thinks is the best formation to get you three or four yards and he is here in the fourth down zone once the offensive line as they push out and really give bunch a little scene inside good block there bye-bye tally to Center on the nose tackles uruk's really created a crease for bunch [Applause] seven this is for tripped up there was a great defensive play that time by George Williams number 69 6-3 280 pounds from the state of New Jersey both of these schools have national recruiting programs you will see athletes from almost every state in the country at Notre Dame in Michigan 69 right here George Williams he is very quick off the ball he is a big man he's 282 pounds yet he gets off there it quickly beats the block inside if the back comes from the backside of the play to put the stop on him this is third and five they can get a first down without scoring [Applause] we run the trawl play close to a first down with that second effort he may have gotten it let's see where they spot the ball that was Bulls the irish expected to pass that time and the officials have called a timeout nice little called by both shin doctor because they could come out of passing formation they had two receivers to one side they were in split backs and ordinarily that's a passing formation for Michigan who then he ran the draw play majorie now [Applause] so close I think he's got to go I think he trails by 13 points ten minutes surely he can squeeze a couple of inches out of fourth down he has a running quarterback about your team right now he first gave me [Applause] wishbone formation [Applause] he keeps setting himself for the first day he was pointing back to his tail dog for when he hit the quarterback sneak when you have a sitter like Joan metalli the old Big Ten Center one of the best in the country that's what you do [Applause] he's moving around I understand what he's trying to tell the back when he's running a quarterback sneak it is possible that he's trying to tell the referee that it's a little noisy down in that endzone you know I cannot be positive but the referee was off to the right and he turned his head in that direction twice first thing [Music] this is Williams close to the goal line this is not the kind of wishbone that Oklahoma run this is a cow wishbone that Michigan has that uses the use inside the 20-yard line play defense here for just a moment watch some big bodies come right at you we go scrumping it coming action Tracy Williams following the block and just finding a little bit of a crease but it's a great offense the wishbone is to get those two or three yards because you have two tight ends and four guys who can carry the ball [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] on the field to attempt the extra point still eight and a half minutes left in the first set up in the swinging gate she let the baseball player throw off of this formation to the blocking back who looks in on him but this time they swing it over to protect him for the kick new solemn is the holder number 14 [Applause] hammers at oil horrific drive here by Michigan set up by Bulls golf return remember using that offensive line boards not going to make people forget Dwight stones with this trick jump but nonetheless he did get in the end zone they goes 38 yards in 12 plays the Wolverines have joy [Music] you wouldn't back out on your baby brother now widget me hey your comes I see it alright she's all mine [Music] right here it deals a deal I can't believe I agreed to this when a truck is built to last like a Toyota there's no telling how many times you'll hand it down thank you long-lasting Toyota quality who could ask for anything more [Music] for American goods an American workmanship of the best in the world [Music] we turned around a 10-year economics slide and created a boom that has made Massachusetts one of the hottest economies in the country he brought people together created over 400,000 jobs and pushed personal income to the highest levels in the nation he erased a massive deficit balanced ten budgets in a row and cut taxes five times it wasn't a miracle it was leadership [Music] by working together to create opportunity and a good life for all all of us are enriched not just in economic terms but as citizens and as human being for a new era of economic weakness in America Michael Dukakis for president [Music] Senior Center John Vitale out of Detroit six one 273 led the way for the TD and he talked about playing center the center has to be more in control of things and calling out defenses and kind of organizing the offensive line so I think for me it's just control my aggression at times you know it's not over aggressive and keeping within you know control aggression I guess would be where we're looking for but tally right here in the middle controlled aggression watch it comes off the ball the most important thing for centers the first step he's got the best step first step of any Center in college football pour it up over the top for the touchdown Stonebraker appeared to have a shot but may have slipped up the goal so they're going to try the speed version here to return the kickoff he's going to get a chance to sex Alex Marshall number 59 led the assault on his man next Saturday Florida State on the comeback now one and one goes to Death Valley to take on Clemson always love to go ride around and coach towards pickup the great seems in college football down to Death Valley your favorite now that I know you first and ten [Applause] checking that scoreboard for the day Penn State impressive and their older is going to feel a good team this year West Virginia a dark horse for number one Philips with a huge Duke rate beating Tennessee 31 to 14 that symbolizes Mississippi State over Vanderbilt in the third very latest Jim Nantz and Eric are seeing it will be coming [Applause] the inability of rice to complete passes so far in the first half what do you think that does to Lou Holtz's strategy and play calling on the sidelines well he's playing knows he's playing very good defense so he doesn't have to throw the ball as much as he probably thought when he came into the ballgame particular when he's leading 13 7 but somewhere down the road here Tony rice is going to complete some passes [Applause] [Music] Bobby Abraham's and JJ grid making this hop for the Wolverines right side of the muder damn offensive line really doing a terrific job that's brown and good hard on the right side watch as they get off the ball there's a little bit of crease there for Anthony Johnson that's all he needs when it's third to just a little bit of crease to pick up the first down 13 to 7 Notre Dame leading Michigan this is a first [Applause] [Music] [Applause] who's free down there but the Irish maintain control let's go downstairs to John dock Thank You Brad you might be wondering where the distinctive Michigan helmet came from well back in 1938 Fritz Crisler wanted to make it easier for his quarterback to spas receivers downfield and that's why he put the distinctive stripe on her helmet the facemask came later as a matter of fact rent up until 1940 the player couldn't wear a face mask unless he had a broken nose or some other facial injury that's back when men were talk now back to some of those youngsters [Applause] [Music] [Applause] good defensive play by Bobby Abrams number 24 it certainly was he really is removed at the place selection here Michigan either team has really thrown the ball very well the surprise of course is Notre Dame rushing the ball as well as they have ordinarily it takes a young offensive line a long time to mature because nowhere else in a and a team deviate as much teamwork and companionship that you do the offensive line but they've come together well tonight this is third [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's inside the 45 three number 24 has been underrated here at Notre Dame simply because of the presence of the great Tim Brown green is 6-foot 184 pounds out of Riverside California those had to take the ball right a fill picked up a nice block by his fullback Johnson number 20 to follow that it picked up the first down nice Ronnie 39 yards and 10 carries [Applause] 60 gets in and makes it another big defensive play for the Wolverines Messner really loves to play a game of football that sounds kind of funny but I think a lot of guys really go through the motion get excited but don't love the game like mr. top of the screen number 60 beats the center very quickly that's hard to do for a center to try to pull out and block him and puts the stop on Tony rice but mister improves every day at practice become a much better player in his career at Michigan Tony Brooks [Applause] nice [Applause] ricochet pass that should have [Applause] eleven to go here in the first half tough break for Tony rice because his ball was pretty well thrown the water should have had it he gets pretty good protection by the offensive line you see they're double-teaming Nestle there they are the right thrilled record numbers he slipped on the turf a little bit but they look like he took his eye off the ball he made a nice play as he stepped back to make the intercepts the Michigan guide and you will find nothing but you won't find his name on any of the run downs and you asked Michigan why can't I read about David Keith the answer is because he was in Bo Schembechler his darkness when he flew at the media guide and he said until he learns how to do better will keep his name and his bio information out of there I dare say after interception don't mess with Bo I guess yeah problem for rice down here on the [Applause] come the Wolverines with [Applause] 13:7 [Applause] Michigan has all three timeouts [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sisqó let's present this week's Toyota Leadership Awards they go to the players who've been singled out by the coaching and faculty staff for their performance and academics and citizenship and our winners are mark Messner from Michigan he's a sports medicine major from Hartland Michigan and Tom Gorman from Notre Dame he's a government history major he's injured and not playing tonight but Tommy back next week against Michigan State Penn Toyota donates a check in the amount of $1,000 to each school's general scholarship [Applause] [Music] - first down we're in a terrific block by number seventy-five bricks crépinette he lined up at the right tackle really came down came in three hundred and forty five pounds this year had himself down to 320 Brent I'm not sure whether he was founded or born but he's a big old guy and he's going to be a very good player through the years for both shin Becca they're gonna run a lot of power behind him [Music] [Applause] 69 there defensively remember Jamie Morris a year ago I think he rushed over like 1700 yards from Michigan bow-chee' McClure's hoping that tony bowls can ultimately become the guy a tailback that used a couple of different guys tonight he's got terrific speed they want him to become the guy well we've seen a couple of them tonight and Jefferson has been slowed because of a shoe [Applause] this is [Applause] it's a Michigan first down inside the Notre Dame a 45 yard line Michigan with a lot of time to 41 on the clock and all three of their timeouts remain watch the center and a left guard right there Dean Dingmans the left guard but Talley is a sinner they're going to double teams or it's the nose and create a gaping hole here for Bowles terrific block there by Dingman 78 and that's what you're going to have to do create a little bit of the scene for Bowles to pick up six seven eight yards on first game this veteran offensive so his rush that time Steam's beat a pretty good offensive tackle for the Wolverines who's our number 74 watch number 30 stamms he's on the left to the screen he's going to come in here make the sack on Michael Taylor he beats number 74 quickly who's our pretty good coverage again I think which made Taylor hold the ball [Applause] now it is second in 13 for Michigan [Applause] rolls off the draw West Pritchett the inside linebacker thirty four six six two fifty and another Big Ten team experienced a difficulty but it's time to say something about Washington State at Oklahoma State News hammer in Miami of Ohio the manager down there for Miami of Ohio tonight is Bo Schembechler son shimma shimma graduated he's coaching [Applause] Francisco [Music] whale of a ballgame here the first half awarded big plays this down bottom of the screen you going to see teams really put sands where we put this pressure on Michael Taylor here again beats Hoos are quickly this time to the inside just overpowers them he's not that big is only 237 power pounds Tanner does a nice job of getting rid of the ball his tailors Gillette this one will be down at the 10-yard line so when you come back will 44 seconds remaining in the first half notre-dame leading Michigan 13 to 7 [Applause] [Music] to us at UPS this is a custom car why this beauty's been modified dozens of times it has a fiberglass fuel-efficient front which makes us more efficient so we can deliver next-day air for up to half foot other companies charge and allow our drivers to be seen in one mean set of wheels we run the tightest ship in the shipping business for every man who wears brute deodorant there's a woman who'll always be glad that he did because a man who wears brute deodorant is nice to be close to it smells like a man [Applause] Michigan just call so they have to remain to his defense very important series here for Michigan's defense the thought of course is to stuff them call a couple timeouts and force a punt maybe get something on the floor before halftime tell me rice conferring coach holds [Applause] was [Music] we'll take another break and we come right back what's to think about buying a new muffler admite as we stopped more muffles in any one guarantee you and get you in and out of here fast so i went to number one nobody beats matters it's a no-brainer nobody what's he doing out of cigar with a funny look on his face gosh of a gives you two rich tobacco taste that naturally friend know there's gosh you bag of whiffs another honest cigar [Music] 31 seconds and so passionately strategist David Arnold with punching his career there might be a thought as well but the idea first is the stuff Notre Dame and course the fun Kings up with Johnson [Music] [Applause] it's been a well-played first-half by these two teams federal for the first game as well we haven't really seen too many penalty flag again no hands go up the time is important right now with Bryce getting ready to huddle with Coach Holtz 26 seconds two timeouts left for Michigan also the Irish have two success with the option play toady rice has kept the ball and running [Applause] can't afford the turnover here she can immediately if they stop them obviously [Applause] fifteen that he said Oh speedster is male on the field number 25 they showed him wide earlier and set him on a five to the right side of this formation [Applause] David key forced to make the tackle upon a 22 yard run by Johnson and that is a big big play for the Irish I want to take the offensive line I can't open up a gaping hole for Johnson it wasn't a surprise call a draw was really kind of a [Applause] big hole there for Johnson final seconds ticking away [Applause] deep this time this is this male going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] two free waters for the school for this message in a word for your local station oh so did you check out any other four befores before getting another one of vote America watch mark while and Dolores handy weekend's on 7 the prudential college football report is sponsored by the prudential your prudential representative goes above and beyond to meet your needs and insurance and other financial services but prudential your rock in financial services all right the Irish up at halftime 13 to 7 Jim Nantz an era per second here in our New York studios coach he talked about defense before the game that was kind of the story here in the first half exactly right as a matter of fact Notre Dame really played very well they only gave up 78 yards and 52 of it rushing now the thing about it is that they have scored through the kicking game the punt return and also two field goals so Michigan as far as I'm concerned I'm sorry what I should say is rice is going to have to complete some passes to compliment that Notre Dame offense all right coach the big story today in college football Rutgers upsetting the defending Big Ten champions Michigan State in East Lansing 17 to 13 the quarterback there for the Scarlet Knights Scott Ernie threw for two touchdowns here's the first one of the game down the left sideline it goes to Eric Young 61 yarder therefore the score it was 17 to nothing Rutgers they go on the one at 17 the 13 a late fumble and the game by the Spartans sealed the victory for the Rutgers that's quite an upset there really is they just continued a trend that started last week against the Big Ten that's a real tribute to the coached upset the Spartans big 1001 for last week will have coach dick Anderson of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights joining us here in our studio at halftime all right top ten number one Miami off this week next week we'll go against the Michigan Wolverines second ranked Nebraska minute to go in the third quarter look at UCLA four touchdowns in the first quarter Troy Aikman's thrown for three scores and that's now the most points allowed by a Cornhusker team since 1968 Aikman looking good here tonight third ranked Clemson over Furman as expected now 23 straight wins for the Tigers over Furman fourth ranked Oklahoma shut out North Carolina in identical score to last year's matchup between these two teams Jamel Holloway was back at quarterback for the Sooners who are now 16 and O against the ACC what about Oklahoma I know you were impressed today by their season debut well you know they always get on the scoreboard I mean they always score a lot of points but what a lot of people don't realize is this football team has been outstanding defensively in the last five years they lead in the four major categories in offense but personally they also are dead last in passing which means you don't have to pass the ball to win I think you're right through that defense sometimes underestimated USC with a touchdown pass by Rodney Peete in the beat Stanford 24 to 20 coming from behind there Auburn / Kentucky it was 17 to 10 in the fourth but the Wildcats committed three turnovers in the fourth quarter including having one pass intercepted in the end zone that game was closer than some people had thought it would be Georgia and TCU first played in the 1942 Orange Bowl Georgia won at that year today it was Tim Worley of the Bulldogs 128 yards on the ground including a touchdown and the running back also threw for a score as Georgia's now 2 and OH on the season Florida State rebounding from last week's embarrassment to Miami with a 49:13 win over Southern Mississippi first play of the game from scrimmage Deion Sanders the all-america defensive back picks it off now he plays baseball by the Yankees farm system Sanders has great speed he really got the game going there for the Seminoles they go on the win at 49 to 13 next week we'll go against Clemson here on CBS alabama shut out temple at veteran's stadium in philadelphia now Bobbie Humphrey the Heisman candidate back after an off season of a broken foot and broken jaw he had 18 carries for 91 yards and one touchdown did Bobbie Humphrey over and all of a pretty good performance for Humphrey considering the offseason injuries we spoke to him just minutes ago from Philadelphia well it was great it was good to get in there contact working and everything and I think I feel pretty good about it you know I had a bad sprain a bad summer when able to get it in contact up until it's a nice game you know I feel how many in great condition for us to go on with the season you know it's been a vital offseason for you and your teammates how have you guys been able to put that behind you and come out and play the kind of football you did tonight summer and you know recently you just have to you know forget about it and put it behind y'all I think the team has done a great job about it you know for the accidents that have occurred and I fear that they've done a great job you know because when you do things to happen like that you get distractions in everything and I think we're overcome Bobby are you prepared to have every game scrutinized here in this Heisman Trophy race that you'll be facing this year well well I think so I think I'm gonna just I'm done I'm just gonna go out and just perform to the best of my ability made the Heisman take care itself really I want to win a national championship in Sec reign you know that's one of the things I have confidence here at Alabama and that's going to be my primary goal so lofty goals for Bobbie Humphrey who could become this year the first player ever from Alabama to win the Heisman Trophy South Carolina shutout Western Carolina tonight and Penn State playing without running back Blair Thomas he did not suit up for the game beat Virginia on the road in Charlottesville no word from Joe Paterno if he will redshirt his star running back we'll have more gridiron results in a moment this is the Prudential college football report on CBS where the scores continue from around the country [Music] if you can dream it you can do it today the Prudential can show you a new world of financial opportunities to the mutual funds feel it strengthen see insurance and mortgages with the right choices the right guidance sky's the limit potential in financials we go above we are just like you propelled and beyond what we have to do [Music] back on the Prudential college football report narcan saw had a scare tonight and Tulsa gave him a tough game in fact Tulsa fumbled the football away in the final minute at the Arkansas 19 yard line but the Razorbacks prevailed to go to 2 and OH on the season Florida a winner in Mississippi in Jackson Emmitt Smith had 20 carries 109 yards did not find the endzone but here's one player who did find the endzone Stacey Simmons on the second half kickoff he goes 85 yards cutting back to the middle and the Gators now 2 and OH on the season winning a conference game tonight in Jackson Duke over Tennessee Duke handed the Vols their worst loss ever in 1893 70 to nothing but this one really stings tonight as the Blue Devils of Steve Spurrier beat Tennessee what a shocker there Vanderbilt scores midway through the fourth quarter to beat Mississippi State that's also a conference game in the SEC Washington State over Minnesota last week Illinois was the victim of Washington state boy this is a surprise team era it really is Dennis Erickson has been an outstanding job and I was really impressed with that football team a week ago when they destroyed Illinois I'll tell you what Washington State not to a no and capturing two Big Ten teams Indiana hands rice its 8th straight loss Anthony Thompson hundred 87 yards three touchdowns on the ground oak state over Miami of Ohio Barry Sanders replacing Thurman Thomas 157 yards three touchdowns their West Virginia over Fullerton now as the Mountaineers are two and OH on the season Iowa rebounding from last week's humiliation in Hawaii and Iowa beating Kansas State 45 to 10 Hawaii near they are there now - and OH in the season beating Colorado State including a kickoff return for a touchdown by the Rainbows their Washington opens its season at Purdue beats another Big Ten team they are 22 six Fred Akers tonight as he was going for career win number 100 Ohio State John Cooper impressive debut for Cooper in Columbus as Ohio State beat Syracuse 26 to 9 and in baseball a near big big story today by Roger Clemens he threw a one-hitter against Cleveland giving up a single in the eighth inning at the plate for the Indians Dave Clark one out and the single they only hit allowed by Clemens his eight shutout of the year he's Boston beats Cleveland and now let's take a look at the situation in baseball Detroit Falls to three and a half back as the Yankees win again Yanks are four and a half back of Boston Seattle leads Milwaukee in the seventh in Baltimore over Toronto and will continue still ahead we'll be joined here by Rutgers coach dick Anderson whose Scarlet Knights again stunned 15th ranked Michigan State and we'll check in on a historic day at the US Open you're watching the prudential college football report where the scores continue from around the country [Music] soar beyond your expectations today the Prudential can show you a new world of financial opportunities look to the rock for stocks and bonds mutual funds [Music] insurance and mortgages with the right choices the right guidance [Music] the Prudential [Music] financial we go above and beyond just like you representative when I talk to people about CPAs and mutual funds they're surprised at the wide range of investment opportunities I cannot [Music] earlier today on CBS sports a new chapter was written in tennis history at the US Open Tim Ryan has the story of Super Saturday an exciting day of tennis at the US Open tennis championships we watch Steffi Graf complete the grand slam here today the first woman to do so since 1970 when Margaret Court of Australia made the same achievement here she is in the final point of the match from the top of your screen against Gabriela Sabatini who gave her a very very tough battle into this third set [Music] the Grand Slam also today number two seated man Mott's Wilander defeated Darren Cahill in straight sets young Australian with a good run but not far enough Wilander advances to the final against the top seed Ivana Lendl who defeated Andre Agassi in four sets today it'll be Lendl and Wilander numbers one and two for the championship tomorrow here on CBS [Music] again that's tomorrow at 4 o'clock Eastern Time following our coverage of the National Football League on CBS and again the big story today in college football Rutgers beating the defending Big Ten champions and the Rose Bowl champions Michigan State 17 the 13 that game was in East Lansing Michigan back flying back from the game as the coach from Rutgers dick Andersen congratulations routine day for you guys huh just routine today I was it was a great win we would thoroughly enjoyed it you know Michigan State was a defensive leader all last year and many of the coaches were adopting their philosophy defensively now what did you find during the course of your study in preparation that you were able to attack and make yardage against this football team number one era we felt that the defense was geared to stop the run so we really didn't want to go out and bang our heads against the wall so we thought we would start out with the short passing game and get the ball off rather quickly before the stunning defense had an opportunity to get to us we could kind of offset that that running situation and maybe soften them up and later on with that them conscious of the past perhaps hid in there with some quick hitters perhaps the draw make that go and that's the game we're on we got to run the football fairly successfully as well tickets not any longer just Penn State in the east of course last year Syracuse has emerged as a national power and many people touting West Virginia is a potential national champion perhaps even this year what does this do for the Rutgers program as far as national recognition well I think it's very obvious that we've got our name out there now people know who we are especially after this win but we've had other big wins before and not only east but in in intersectional games as well well you've got a tie on it says in New Jersey and you in the garden states happy tonight congratulations connects alike to you all right coming up the second half Michigan against Notre Dame will rejoin Brent Musburger and Pat Haden and brush you don't get enough plaque off your teeth especially in hard-to-reach places the problem is plaque the solution is plaques rinse with plaques before brushing and you can remove 300 percent more plaque than brushing alone blacks original flavor and soft mint removes 300 percent more black than brushing alone I'd rather switched an itch so I switched to Tegra Tegra and medicated shampoo controls all the major causes of itching and flaking so tegra is more than strong enough for everyday dandruff like if you were Carl I just want to compliment you on your excellent excellent casting now I would have thought that maybe a Chevy still on the ground [Applause] get the ball you catch it that winds up a 49-yard punt [Music] good evening I'm Dolores handy coming up tonight on the New England News Nightbeat as police investigate another act of violence in Boston tonight residents come together demanding more concerted action on the part of the city and cracking down on the wave of violent drug related crime we will take you there as governor michael dukakis steps up his attacks on his Republican presidential rival an army of national political heavy hitters arrived for a weekend strategy session and a daughter of the late Senator Robin F Kennedy is joined to the United Farm Workers fast for life chained by actor Lou Diamond Phillips of La Bamba Fame they are day's sports action including Steffi Graf's move into the record books and Todd gross offers a sunny Sunday in his weekend forecast join us after the game channel 7 WN TV TV Boston [Applause] 59 Michigan set to return it bowls [Applause] second half is underway [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we've got a quarterback with Notre Dame Tony Rice was not completed a pass what can they do to get him into the flow well throwing the football as a matter of rhythm it looks like he is over striding it's been his problem all last year it looks like it's been this problem now I think you need to get his confidence just a couple of quick passes maybe a screen pass a quick out to the wide receiver that gets one guy going and feeling better about himself all right right now it will be Michigan down on the field set to go with the first offensive series here the second first [Music] trying to catch a hole on the right side when they came out for the second half John Dockery spoke to both Schembechler what about the offensive line of Notre Dame's they surprise you by their play well I think their backs are running hard I don't know how well they're blocking up front their backs are running harder than ours and we just have to change that how about you in the locker room Tom Moore with the fire and brimstone oh we know we can win it if we just play good football Thank You coach good luck my go is right unless Notre Dame can throw the football with some success the second half michigan's [Music] [Applause] you told the explosion the secondary [Applause] stance McCullough number 29 forced to make the tackle after an 18 yard burst terrific blocks on the left-hand side Dignan number 78 blocks down 64 coming around his Chester put a big block and balls has got some breakaway speed runs with his feet close to the ground looking like toreador said it's Abel's him to cook very very quickly [Applause] he's gone all the way this is the baby [Music] [Applause] number 34 the first Irish defender to hit him there Porton series here for Michigan because the first series of each half really sets the tone we've seen two plays right now in the Michigan offensive line really came off the ball much unlike they get in the first half it's the Michigan line we expected to see tonight five yards of crack jeffrey Brown has brought the play tidy [Applause] number 38 Flash Gordon gives you an idea of where Michigan is attacking against the Notre Dame defense this is behind their offensive line you look like this from the offensive side of the ball no surprise right up the middle where most of the yardage he has come right behind John Vitale the center really had a pretty good night [Applause] there is confusion [Music] [Applause] [Music] and host of defenders in there to fill that hole and there was definite confusion and a late arriving back and that surprises me that Michigan ran to the right foot because Chris Zorich the nose tackle had had moved over was shaded that side ordinarily a quarterback comes up keys the nose guard runs away from him [Music] [Applause] standing on his 30-yard line those puns was returned for a touchdown [Applause] until it drives him inside the five he fumbles goes back into the end zone coming out [Applause] he is out of bounds at the 7 yard line what about his judgment there pathogen foot boy you let a ball drop inside the 10-yard line you don't try to field it but you have a guy with tremendous confidence returning punts he thought he could do it I think we'll think it's necessarily a bad call for him a 56-yard punt in a 7 yard return in this partisan Notre Dame crowd because the Michigan defense to now go on the attack as the other Dame will have a first and ten at the 8 yard line coming out Thanks is the full-back green will be the tailback shall let the busiest man in the stadium tonight and first down is the key here if you get four yards on first down then you can run the ball a couple of times if you don't get those four yards you put your offense and really in a bind tell me Bruce and Anthony Johnson was supposed to be injured out of this mark Greene the workhorse [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the full-back and thanks [Applause] Pittsburgh we talked about Michigan here's how the Irish attack pretty evenly balanced the Irish were here the right side they have a strong side at a weak size of their guards and tackles flip-flop with a nice job behind Dean Brown and Tim brewed hard their strong side guard and tackle second long for rice [Applause] the line of scrimmage mark Messner number 60 they're all American and in the middle of that run Nestor will go underneath you around you outside and it's so tough when you're an offensive tackle because he's so quick you could lose him right on your first deputies in the backfield so that great punt by Gillette sealed the Irish they've hit on only two of six previous third they go with the outside is the swamp man to the right [Applause] [Music] almost intercepted a great move by Abrams number 24 [Applause] Tony locked in on the receiver the whole well away and by the Abrams the outside linebacker just read his eyes and really should have made the play that's the difference between winning and losing big games like this aprons really should have made to play on that one but good coverage nonetheless now it is Sexton set to punt and Chris Callaway [Applause] returned his first pot standing at the Michigan Theater situation [Applause] fair catch signal at midfield and down so it will be good field position for the Wolverines after that 41-yard punt we'll take a timeout be right back exactly how she got me I haven't seen her in two weekends I'm looking forward to it another part on [Music] television like you've never seen it before this is the s CTV television network with special guests about tubes that were the judges they say why is America having a change of heart and pickups Chevy gives you standard shift on the fly used to track Ford doesn't [Music] it's America's fastest production car Callaway Corvette to create a Callaway Corvette the entire engine must be built by hand nearly 1500 with the highest standards in the world and by Michelob Michelob is a proud sponsor of the 1980 US Olympic team Bo Schembechler back coaching after his second open-heart surgery as he mellowed here's what his players had to say I haven't seen him this energetic and motivated in a long time he's been really a feisty little guy I mean he's he's pumped up he's very go for season he's really positive he's upbeat he's a little looser which a lot of guys say lucky for the freshmen because he's a little look nice and lit up he's been great he's got fire in his eyes it's like he's rejuvenate you know 10 years younger he's out here you know just with as much enthusiasm as the players and it's a good feeling it's attitude the team is a lot better one coach one address and he really should be the Heart Association cover boy 1970 Rose Bowl a heart attack mid 70s open-heart surgery December of 87 the second open-heart surgery what this man loves to do more than anything is coach football even though he's taken on the added duties as athletic director now with good striking position his offense goes to work and goals ray Jones number 70 doctor from Hyattsville Maryland number seven Andre Jones has to be the playmaker on this defense she's six for 220 pounds but guys permit tremendous speed a great special teams player a year ago but he's in a position outside linebacker that can really raise havoc in an offense should make big plays from the outside the inside men for the Irish right now Bowl car is there with Stonebraker Pritchard on the sidelines [Applause] oops it means pushed out of bounds on the far side [Applause] you know at the top of the show we said Michael Taylor didn't have to win the game purrs him for himself didn't have to try to do that I think he's playing within himself today he's not throwing the ball particularly well or for a lot of yards but he's just leading his team he's got a presence about him and you can see his confidence grow he started last year against Northwestern he's able to complete only one pass [Applause] inside shuffle it worked once [Applause] storage [Applause] vocational high school made the stop so I made a big plank here otherwise Ford is going to run for about 30 yards this is the little shuffle pass inside drops back dumps it off the Horde there's a ute all here would have easily picked up the first down but Zorich refused to be blocked and that's where it takes sometimes it nose tackle strong performance by the Notre Dame defense [Applause] [Music] [Applause] waterers makes a mistake position is recovered atop his body and the ball is loose he was trying to [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so Ricky Watters give us 81 yard return for a touchdown and Watters take us away [Applause] being story [Applause] Stonebraker hit him and then smogula cleans up on the tackle he can't say enough about John Batali to center the way he is playing Brent if you can have a good offensive football team you need leadership in your offensive line and that's where John fatality is doing it and solling Ricky Watters the try captain's there to the right not to get upset to stand again we had to go here it is second down for for the Wolverines this is pose [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this guy who came charging through is Michael Stonebraker number 42 late the middle screen really cleared out a couple of blocker stole breakfast comes in from here light comes from the outside but those are about three other blue jerseys as well chick number 34 there Stonebreaker he went right through your fear and clears the way for light with defensive teamwork that's nine tackles for Michael Stonebraker biggest play [Applause] [Music] noise down here at this end I always get to mascara next time he gets them the student body is positioned there on the left side er screen that's the where Michigan is going right now so it will be third we're in South Bend Indiana Stadium [Applause] this is CFA college football Notre Dame which led 13 to nothing try to hold on as Michigan has cut that lead to 637 time remaining [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Michigan his head she success with her script wrong for [Applause] [Applause] the official has the opportunity the referee has to take control here he can go ask the PA announcer to tell the proud to be quiet over a charge a timeout against Notre Dame go talk to the camera they talk to your captains and they go over the PA system [Applause] Michigan has come on in a split back formation here which is a long time to look at that formation as they stood up under the line there's a passing formation but this for tonight Michigan has run a lot of draws an off tackle place who split backs wonder if beau will change the point of the play call me we had a few words with his quarterback during his second stoppage Andre Jones the linebacker came over to the Notre Dame sideline third and seven the ballers at the Notre Dame Michigan can get inside balls ambush the moving guys tailor [Applause] may have pushed on the play the side judge would look like [Applause] was there contact there was contact oh it was both good run to look like down the field but it was a little a flat was that past catchable the ball was out of the field of play and to be pass interference the ball definitely has to be catchable the ball was outside the playing field certainly did not appear to be catchable the officials huddling down there and let's see what his ruling is defensive holding not pass interference [Applause] so an automatic first down the ball is just shy of the 5-yard line a first and goal for Michigan in a big break likes to go to his wishbone formation [Applause] this is hard stamped at the 4-yard line [Music] defensin quotes urging the troops on an upset to [Music] watch the right side of the screen they can't see he'll play the right second [Applause] [Applause] that's interesting that's a charge timeout as a family [Applause] officials huddling at the 5:00 is he waving the penalty flag off timeout has been charged to Notre Dame carried away through the flag it is not a penalty it's a charged time now [Applause] that leaves the Irish with two and volts getting an explanation these officials are named merci [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he is right [Music] [Music] was complaining about early movement I think he's got a legitimate complaint [Applause] [Music] Michigan far side with coach Jim Beck [Music] Michael Stonebraker the inside linebacker for Notre Dame this is what he thinks football's all about when you're right down here the goal and we talked to him yesterday this is his kind of football [Music] Michigan comes back with a second [Music] [Applause] amia stop short it'll be third and goal [Applause] Boal car and Stonebraker were in the middle of that somewhere about to be bought in my bowls [Music] [Applause] good defense here by Notre Dame they fake to the fullback early I think everybody thought the full-back was going to get it here's Tracy Williams number 36 and forty-seven bolcar made the stop [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] determination [Applause] his job is to read the garden 20 blocks down step up Richard did it number 34 Borkar 47 didn't as well as good team defense [Applause] touchdown Michigan scores and his crew keeps it [Music] the score tied at 13 [Applause] the point is the offensive line swings back over to block 4 Gillette [Music] [Music] [Applause] the network watch two players here Dave Chester the right guard and Andre Jones the linebacker sometimes guards do good fakes he fakes the trap Jones comes right down as beats right behind Andre Jones for the score see the right guard pool that's where Andre Jules thinks the ball is it's an easy touchdown for Taylor experience [Applause] and now Michigan will kick it off as Michael Taylor scored on a fourth and goal Gillette's extra point makes it 1413 we we certainly join this one it's a damn [Applause] [Applause] takes it deep to the speech Johnson field offense will go to work tomorrow we'll start our coverage at 12:30 Eastern the NFL today long as dick butkus talked to the friend [Music] what's going on with you watch the Bears play the Annapolis and also a lot of folks will see San Francisco and Giants that's the rest of our early lineup they're leading into the finals of the US Open Mats Wilander again Steve [Music] [Applause] that play didn't look like much didn't gain many yards and Mark Greene got hit pretty hard but Tony rice got his first completion believe me heaven better quarterback he's been old for 20 or 30 a few times that means a lot to you [Music] Green [Applause] [Music] first Tony rice has a lot of heart he heard all last year he couldn't throw the ball he didn't throw the ball well in the first half that comes right back out completes his first two passes in the second half this one right down field to Allen East who had a found a little ditch spot right in the middle of a defense that's a well-thrown ball the freshman Derrick brown is his tight end he set to the right [Applause] the years as the full Bank Johnson who goes white straight ahead sensational second effort all the way to the 49 yard line checking that scoreboard UCLA impressively over Nebraska they will jump up to challenge Miami Arizona over Texas Tech Arizona State are tired of the first quarter [Applause] [Music] the Irish chanson break for the first time motor game is one of very few teams it actually has specific calls for the full-back in the i-formation most I formation teams just used the full-back as a blocker the Notre Dame uses Anthony Johnson and Braxton banks as very big in their game plan runny inside traps Johnson has been 39 yards with those traps in four carries he's still the fullback Green is the tailback this is green straight ahead John Milligan while Schembechler said it to John decree the Notre Dame backs have been running extremely hard as you see the scores from the American League East Boston shutting out Cleveland rally in scoring seven runs to beat Detroit and Seattle over Milwaukee by one but the Red Sox getting that great pitching performance out of Roger Clemens are now certainly the team defeated the American League's Eastern Division [Applause] [Music] this is books he gets inside the 35 he's short of the first down [Applause] we're in South Bend Indiana with Pat Haden and John decree I'm Brent Musburger welcome to Notre Dame Stadium those of you who have watched UCLA beat Nebraska tonight Notre Dame is moving on Michigan Michigan leads Notre Dame 14 to 13 they were behind 13 to nothing in this mix up my spins away shows his hand and appear to get the first down that's a terrific play by Tony rice you know you talk about him not being beating you with his arms but he certainly can beat you with his with his legs there was a mix up between himself and the full-back took a little bit a wide step but just turned right around to the shot in the back but picked up four or five yards in the first down that's a nice play ball is at the Michigan 31 yard line the short side this is green [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we've seen him complete two passes we seem to make something out of nothing in the last play this time he executes the option beautifully come down the line of scrimmage quickly he pitches the ball degreed gets a nice block from his wide receiver Allan DS and the fighting hours have another first down good downfield blocking by the wide receiver Alaniz when you get a wide receiver who can block you turn a 5-yard gain into a 15-yard game this is Johnson close to the 10 yard line on first down a very impressive march by the other day and they've done a little bit of everything going on this drive even able to throw the ball downfield they've run some option they've run the tailback and they run the full-back inside now in the first half after scoring on an 81 yard punt return the Irish got to the 15 they got to the 22 and have the subtle this is green [Applause] [Music] first down [Music] [Applause] this hang we've seen him complete to passively see to make something at enough in the last play this time he executes s-- the option beautifully come down the line of scrimmage quickly he pitches the ball to greed gets a nice block from his wide receiver Alaniz and the fighting hours have another first down good downfield blocking by the wide receiver Alaniz when you get a wide receiver who can block you turn a 5-yard gain into a 15-yard game [Applause] close to the 10 yard line on first down a very impressive march by Notre Dame following that Michigan touchdown on fourth and they've done a little bit of everything been in this Drive they've been able to throw the ball downfield they've run some option they've run the tailback and they run the full-back inside now in the first half after scoring on an 81 yard punt return the Irish got to the 15 they got to the 22 and have the shuttle [Applause] second [Applause] this is waters Abraham's 24 leading the defensive charge that time along with number three trip well born [Applause] this will make it third down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] this is a brand-new shopback that comes with a surprise so where's the surprise in a minute first this baby picks up stuff like nails in glass like a regular shot back so where's the surprise and like a regular shot back wet dry it also picks up water so where's the surprise just this beautiful evening we get set to start the final 15 minutes Michigan Irish 14:13 this is the eleventh play this for Tony rice and [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how our game has gone this far Notre Dame struck first in Michigan had to come up with 14 unanswered points to take the lead Rice's completions in the second half four rushing yards Notre Dame has had the best of it surprisingly and on third down the defense holes and here comes [Applause] 26 [Music] 16:14 movie [Music] [Music] electronic is 100th career win and that victory in over Nebraska now also I know today Jim young picked up a milestone as well his 100th career win as the cadets marched past Holy Cross let's go back to Brenton Pat all right Jim thank you here Notre Dame leading Michigan 1614 we said a year ago Tim Brown be in Heisman Trophy race UCLA he's very good football team that well coached and he's off to a great start [Applause] [Applause] George Streeter and home while with start at 12:30 Eastern with the NFL today then you will see one of these be Rams green babe Minnesota Buffalo Philadelphia Tampa Bay Phoenix Cincinnati and a couple of big ones San Francisco and the Giants not to mention the Bears in Indianapolis I love those Rams last we did get an emerging star Kevin Green outside linebacker for the Rams had about four so I should have known they gave those scores all last week [Applause] and that was balls coming into the heart of the defense gentlemen help me out give my fans the right game okay I know the Giants are there we are in Chicago is playing Indianapolis your Rams in Detroit folks in the Detroit area will be watching that one late tomorrow afternoon it will keep you up-to-date on Lendl Wilander do all Anne's Atlanta Tampa Bay Green Bay those are the correct second week you should ask questions like that you may get some answers [Applause] [Music] Gordon number 38 out of Hillside New Jersey leave either way not your impression of this Notre Dame defense here tonight much improved defense I think over a year ago because they have tremendous speed and particularly in the linebacker position Flash Gordon of course has great speed tackles on [Applause] [Applause] [Music] ganged up on him that time Brian Flannery one of the defenders and it will depend on where they spot the ball as to whether or not Michigan gets the first down I was thinking of our friend Jimmy Johnson down at Miami watching this game tonight all the hoopla here in South Bend I'm sure many of you folks read that little anecdote in the newspaper about the young Notre Dame fan who called Jimmy and said I hate you on BB brush Jimmy I'm here to tell you that you should change the home phone number somebody published it in the noted houston newspaper [Music] I bump it is seven kids seven students who claim to make that call [Applause] Michigan's way first at the fishing and 29 yard line speaking of Miami and coach Johnson he's more concerned about watching Michigan tonight because he'll be up in Ann Arbor for the opener I'm sure that [Applause] [Applause] [Music] we play grapes first down defense and made them get the horse down as the hard way put them in second and seven this time near the conclusion of tonight's CBS game we're pleased to renew an 18-year tradition the selection of a Chevrolet most valuable player the [Applause] by sometime into his complete the cowboy on the far side [Applause] first down for Michigan George Streeter takes him out of bounds after a 17 yard game we sit at the top of the show that Michael Taylor had a play within himself he's done a beautiful job of that tonight no turnovers I believe he's six of seven passing he keeps coming up with big play after big play moving those chains particularly here in the second half the Irish without one defensive player they were counting on we switched the defensive tip on a cotton ball always injured in the loss to Texas will not play this year this is horde who scored their touchdown ahead for a big gain on first down that's one of the harder runs that a Michigan back has shown us tonight he is a brillant eristic pushed by his offensive line watch again to Center by tally come off the left guard Dignan really comes off gets his helmet right in a player then hoard with those big old thick thighs does the rest himself [Applause] raised on some dandy cooking second down and two down [Applause] [Music] by Mike Stonebraker that time short of it we'll see where they spot the ball it's going to be very close again so how did the top 20 farewell Michigan State upset by Rutgers coach dick Anderson who was on Joe Paterno's at the Penn State doing a good job there at the University of New Jersey Palmer and over Kentucky 22 I get to change it giorgia I'm very impressed with coach Dooley's team this year 38 10 I think TC is a decent in Florida state comes up big you choose to go for the and they pitch it outside the pools beautifully executed off the fake the stadium thought the full-back had the ball that time the pitch outside Flash Gordon is forced to defend on the outside but it's a first down for Michigan a terrific play call by Gary Moeller the offensive coordinator of Michigan three times they've been in third and short and three times they've either run the fullback for the quarterback sneak this time take the fullback the option is executed beautifully by Taylor and that's an easy first down they pick up one about 17 yard zero slick play Road two fullbacks belly perfectly the pitch execution [Applause] [Music] stone [Music] his 14 tackle his father Steve Stonebraker attendance here tonight he has to be proud of the effort being turned in by his son who could not play last year West Virginia comes up big for the second week in a row Phillips with a big game we heard from Bobby shuts out temple by 37 impressive again too [Applause] [Music] embarrassing loss or [Applause] champagne balls [Applause] [Music] Michigan is driving the ball Brent but it has not been easy very stout Notre Dame defense particularly in front [Music] [Applause] inside another Michigan first down [Applause] 13 yards Michael Cera's played with great presence and poise tonight he's made all the right movement moves and all the right decisions little play-action fake it was a quarterback draw all the way he found a little crease he's got some pretty good legs and quick feet knew where the first down marker was and easily picked it up Michael Taylor out of Lincoln Heights Ohio started two games last season has replaced the meatiest boom [Applause] [Music] gets inside the 15-yard line [Applause] [Music] the offensive line [Applause] Michigan amazed how well played his game has been and held the offense is how well they've executed in their first game [Applause] they have a new defensive coordinator this year with the Fighting Irish Pat barielle team this year under coach Alvarez physio was the defensive coordinator a year ago it was pretty much assignment football and I think I talked to some of the line break but linebacker Stonebraker and some of those guys they felt they have a lot more freedom under Barry Alvarez his system was very right there with a headset on signaling the defense in we have a lot more freedom and they take a lot more big class help develop the inside linebacker at Iowa Larry Station especially in the Midwest [Applause] what a surprise that Tennessee loses again Duke after beating northwestern makes it two in a row first of million teen in motion pools is hit by Red Bull car remember all the ballyhoo about both car when he came out of Phillipsburg New Jersey and all the publicity it took a couple of years for him to arrive but he's coming on strong watch his eyes and say oh he can't see his eyes to the back of his head he is keyed writing in the offensive line he sees the guard of the left guard stepped down he gets right in there read that read the play beautifully he keys the guard and then he steps up into the hole he's made seven tackles tonight he did not start [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] to [Applause] notre dame's signaling that it's going to be against Michigan which it is so they'll decline that it's gonna be third and forever I know what Becker is thinking here it gets something that gets Mike Gillette a chance to kick a field goal just pick up five six seven yards Michigan trailing by two 1614 so a successful field goal would give them a one-point lead with six thirty nine to go and I would guess that both Gillette and Reggie ho are starting to get a few butterflies right now because this one might come down to both of them [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the same high school that produced one Dick Butkus and as you would expect but this has been his hero as he grew up playing ball in Chicago this or title the center didn't play it down last year as a nose tackle it's really a new position for but he has played magnificently tonight fall off two blocks and made the big stop [Applause] Gillette hammers it [Music] [Music] [Music] with time running down in the fourth they needed him to attempt this 40 [Applause] baseball team Neal's a field goal a little point over there toward the Notre Dame bench and guess who starting to warm up in that direction Michigan leading Notre Dame 1716 and here's that man Gillette to kick it off this man standing back at the building [Applause] at the four great speed but he is humored there [Applause] here's how our scoring has gone tonight waters with that electrifying 81 yard punt return made it 7 nothing Notre Dame then ho hit his first field goal 31 yards and it was 10 to nothing po came back to make it 13 nothing before Michigan getting on the scoreboard the Wolverines with Ford coming up over the top made at 13 seven men on fourth and goal Taylor kept it on the bootleg and hoes 26-yard field goal gave them the lead again but now it's Gillette's 49 as Johnson is in it pull back on this first watch the throw a lot of time for side [Applause] it's David King of Michigan [Applause] over the back the Notre Dame receiver [Applause] you can see him here again Tony rice the second half has thrown the ball a lot better and he that keepeth right to in hand didn't hit him but his body went right through the receiver the official right there the side judge made the call now in college football they go back to the line on pass interference and they measure the penalty off on the line of scrimmage it's a 15-yard penalty and it will give Notre Dame a first down on their own 35-yard off strong [Applause] whoops is the tailback rice on the roll is keeping it they lied on the left side rice bus across in the Michigan territory in a beautiful block by the full-back Anthony Johnson number 22 he has run the ball well and he's going to make a sensational block here for rice this looks like a run pretty much all the way watch 22 Johnson left of the Spree he knocks really two two defenders down good downfield blocked by the wide receiver Ishmael and that's a nice play he hasn't passed for much rice has rushed for 48 yards with six carries here tonight against Michigan [Applause] [Music] [Applause] husband and Messner bringing him down it'll be second in-law a lot of time left for 51 keep in mind that Notre Dame lost the timeout when the crowd was penalized for making too much noise so they have to took pounds remaining action from Tony Brooks tonight he's playing with that they have a middle support in that shoe [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 17 and this is a perfect kind of pass for Tony rice the little play-action pass the delay out of the outfield backfield Brooks is going to accept the play-action fake here and then he's just going to cross over the line of scrimmage the balls in the air only about 10 yards well thrown right in the numbers there for an easy catch for Brooks that's a big play first and ten at the Michigan 26 yard [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three slip he slipped making his cut it'll be second as long as the result hurry like this mark green is that a consistent runner for Notre Dame for three years now at the team the last two years that's very tough to do the consistency out of the running back it's easy to get injured there but Green has done it the last two years for the Fighting Irish wide receivers the tail [Applause] exposed more green averages nearly five or six yards of Kerry get a year ago and most of that is from tackler tackle he's only 180 pounds but it really gets up watch the lock of a left tackle here you're going to see right here he's going to make an ice block and really make a nice hole here for more green and green reads it so very well that's Bruner hard number 75 who made the block and then green does the rest [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] reached for the first down David she was holding down depend now on where they spot the ball and the measurement [Applause] they'll bring the chains across here to the near side of the field for this measurement it was third down if they're left with fourth and inches you would expect the order Dame to go for the first down they've been very successful with the wishbone Rooney short yardage plays time is a factor in Holtz's decision if they come up short 253 left on [Applause] [Music] terrific effort by Tony rice and a play that was pretty well 26 right there david key comes up didn't get his head on the right side the correct side of Tony rice and that's why rice was able to carry him an extra two or three yards [Applause] 17 to 16 we've got 245 left in the game and rice will use another timeout and lewd not happy with that he's unhappy with that timeout decision Notre Dame which is one timeout bolts and rice regroup it has been a wonderful football game and let's go downstairs to John doctor a doctor Fred you mentioned that Lou elephant very aggravated we got timeout with Tony and they both come down pat back you bring yeah John no time to be upset with your quarterback 242 to go the Irish with a first down at the Michigan 16 Notre Dame has to be thinking touchdown here to make it a four-point game a field goal of course makes it a two-point game in Michigan could win it with a field goal [Applause] volts will go at the full house wishbone and a double tiny [Applause] [Music] the offensive line David key again to make the stop Green Anthony Johnson running the ball inside gets more out of nothing than just about any back I have seen three or four times tonight he is dead by himself and gotten four yards [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is three million cooktop big defensive play by Mike anteater [Music] defensive line coach Schembechler in the wolverines with a great play that time terrific play by Teeter number 91 he's playing nose tackle beats the block of Sandri 53 and gets to Greene's feet before he has a chance to dance around him great penetration there by Teeter [Applause] thanks sir [Music] inside the ten-yard line this will leave fourth and three we would expect to see [Applause] the Michigan defense did their job he just wanted try to keep it to a two point game now the Notre Dame record for the most field goals in a game is four and hoe already has three in his debut he's made field goals from the 31:38 and 26 Schembechler and michigan will pour a little ice on the young man from Hawaii some quality Pennzoil Wow Arnie's caddy giveaway and here today [Music] state universal life another reason it isn't very often that Notre Dame has turned its fate over to someone five four and 135 pounds but it's up to Reggie ho now with time running out the other two important men in this sequence are the snapper Timmy green hard number 75 he's 630 to 79 11 grand so here we go at 26 yarder [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] when you watch a college game like this and his college debut [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Notre Dame leads by to 1917 this one is far from over Michigan with two timeouts remaining remember they had a big kickoff return earlier in the game by tony bowls 59 yards in the first half tako by Francisco [Applause] francisco it will be Tracy Williams and Tony Cole's deep they're standing near the 10-yard line Hackett has been unable to drive them back into the end zone this time balls gets it at the six bottles it 15 20 25 down at the 36 yard line 1:06 left on the clock and Michigan with the ball and trailing by two points 19 to 17 absolutely plenty of time for marketing we can do now is just try to force the ball he hasn't done it all night he's had pretty good protection here in the second half unlike the first half and has been able to get the ball downfield this is the point the game though [Applause] throws farside complete to Calloway it's the first down for Michigan an 11-yard gain clock has stopped at 59 seconds terrific pass protection here by the Michigan offensive line easy throw for Michael Taylor I am surprised because Michigan really doesn't throw the ball but tight end much that they don't double cover the outside receivers to prevent that kind of Pat's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Michigan uses a time they stopped it at 43 seconds on the clock they leave themselves with one timeout [Applause] Notre Dame 19 Michigan 17 will be back to the conclusion Saturday 2:30 Eastern Time down loosing South Carolina they'll host the Seminoles of Florida State [Applause] chill [Applause] [Music] Michigan needs 18 yards to give him an opportunity to kick a 50-yarder this is second in ten Michael Taylor's gone all the way at quarterback for Michigan punch in bowls are lined up behind in the very dangerous wide recievers McMurtry in the slot to the right pick the same car away in motion trying to get him over the middle and to prevent him from getting fourth on the line of scrimmage going over the middle deflected [Applause] [Music] Stonebraker got a hand on it first he has had a great game defensively 15 tackles and here he gets in on pass defense way down the field those linebackers are tough to throw up throw over first at 6'5 stole breaker 6-2 but if he had a little bit more touching that it over the receiver callaway was open Bernie Southall was also there defensively this is third and nine Taylor is seven of nine [Applause] Michigan let's get to the [Applause] go away to the right McMurtry - oh wow throwing to McMurtry first down Michigan a sensational third down 18 yard gain Taylor to McMurtry and I think it's actually two double cover the outside receivers don't let him off the line of scrimmage he went down the field wide opening that is within Gillette's ring was the yardage they needed this is first down 24 seconds throws at our bones and stops the clock [Applause] Michigan with a timeout second down here and the coaches must decide where to bring it down where to position that we asked Gillette over in Ann Arbor a couple of days ago if he preferred in Eastside as far as the hashes are concerned he said no it didn't matter he could take the left hash where it is now center of the field or over to the right he's one of the more confident kickers I've ever met now most of them were kind of wimps and flakes but this guy is not but his head screwed on straight a very very confident player rooms with number 60 right behind him mark Messner [Applause] squeezing out a couple more yards and the clock is down inside of ten seconds so it'll be time now for Michigan to use its final timeout and save Gillette onto the field they stopped the clock at three seconds [Applause] we made a 49-yard err [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Dame has one timeout remaining you wonder whether they were they will use it [Music] [Applause] st. Joseph Michigan [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and that is pictured who is six-six - this field goal of 48 yards Notre Dame will use that time [Applause] [Music] if you Notre Dame what you're thinking here is is trying to get some speed on the corner to try to block a maybe an Andre Jones number seven on the outside perhaps forty South Hall he's good off the corner as well and then some quick inside penetration here they could block be careful here roughing the kicker as well [Applause] not much those two fellows can do about it now it's out of their hands [Applause] who continues to look for a four-leaf clover the bow tries to find a way to keep Jillette calm down he's incredible to me though you have so many big men playing the game now both kickers have really been the difference here it is luke gillette earlier kicked a 49 Dave wild will sleep dick is on the way [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] a great scene [Music] the little man [Applause] you say about football game great football team I just had nothing but respect for our players the way they played the way they did think it was a great hitting contest Michigan played almost an error-free game what can I say our fancy game disappointed me but our effort the toughness I'm so proud of them but I gotta give Michigan great credit what about you quarterback he was two different things in the first half he's one way Tony right spectacular Oh [Music] we knew defensive have to carry fans they were tremendous he'd know they gonna said timeout congratulations Lou being surrounded down here Brent now back up to you thank you John congratulations to coach Holtz and a great scene here in South Bend there's no love affair like the student body at Notre Dame [Applause] [Music] [Applause] sent a 48-yarder off to his right which just this [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so that's our scene in South Bend Jim Nantz take it away for a moment all right Brent and I've got a smile and air of procedure with me coach that kick was awfully close it really was this little body English going on here they played an outstanding football game and I'm very happy for the Irish and the defense really rose to the occasion but there were no losers in that game both teams played outstanding football all right let's take a look at some of the scores from today UCLA over second ranked Nebraska 41 to 28 Troy Aikman 13 for 22 205 yards and three touchdowns as the Bruins won the game of course he's a Heisman candidate and here's what he had to say after the game avenging three losses in again UCLA had been trounced by Nebraska three occasions during the 80's and UCLA Avengers that lost tonight 100th career win therefore Terry Donahue Clemson over Furman by 2018 as expected 23 straight wins over the Paladins for the Tigers Oklahoma shutout North Carolina 28 -
