so I've been testing these meta smart glasses for a little over a month now and it's a really cool product I've had the Snapchat specs I've had the previous Rayban stories I've tried them out and while I think the hardware has improved significantly from previous versions and other products in the past as well I do think this is a product that raises a lot more questions than it answers in some ways so I kind of want to answer the questions of if this is just going to be the next Google Glass or if they've reached the hardware point where this is really a viable product for a lot of uh people at the price of $2.99 it's you know comparable to a lot of modern day sunglasses so is giving meta your visuals and auditory inputs something that you're willing to do or is it too early for that or is that something that none of us should be doing let's figure it out all right well I had intended to shoot this video at side but as you can see it started getting very dark and rainy up there so I moved back inside here and that brings me to my first point so the actual meta smart glasses have an ipx4 rating which is water resistant so if you're running around in them or doing some activity and you sweat it's not going to be an issue and also the rain will be fine too the only thing I will say is the capacitive touch on the side here that can kind of you know interrupt with your music or your kind of things if um water does drizzle on it because it is capacitive um so just FYI on that and also another thing it gets dark so early now at like 4:30 so I don't know if the sunglass version is the best for the winter if I were to Reby these I'd probably get the transition version that with sun they you know turn dark the lady at the store demo it for me and she kind of waved the UV wand around and within a minute or two it changed and then it took a little bit to to turn back to but those seem just more practical in the winter when there is very little daylight so looking at the price of these These are actually not bad at all like there are a lot of designer sunglasses that you'll probably end up spending more on just for like the frames and the lenses so given that you get this much amount of tech in here uh I bought these for $2.99 and I actually just saw on Amazon you know black Fridays in 2 days so there is a $50 Digital Credit here if you use the code Rayband 50 on Amazon um so I'll link that below but you know for 250 these are kind of a steal I think the transition versions are a little more expensive so now to one of the biggest topics of contention here and that is privacy right this raises a lot of concerns of when will people know if you're recording will they even know if you're recording Facebook SL sorry keep calling them Facebook it's meta meta has really tried to increase the awareness of the actual recording on here so the light that pulses on the top right is uh a little more visible now and it's brighter and bigger in general but I still think it's a little bit of a miss here because in my opinion it should have been red red means recording everyone knows that and uh it is still small enough where no one really notices it okay and I had a day where I was at a car shoot I had maybe a dozen interactions with different people there and you know talk to them for a significant amount of time like a couple minutes at a time um sometimes I was actually pressing it twice to uh record multiple times which brings me to my next point in a second but no one noticed literally no one noticed um I never had any questions about it when I mentioned after they were like kind of shocked that I was recording so while in theory you know yes someone should maybe notice this it's such a new technology and concept that they're not going to just simply like you might get like one out of 50 one out of 100 people that will actually notice it so that is kind of not a great thing back to the 60-second record limit I feel like this is a huge downside there are many times like when I was at this car shoot I was recording interactions I was also photographing cars and getting back to that 60-second record limit I feel like this is really a missed Mark here but something that they could update soon at this car show I would uh tap the button to record and then I'd be going about doing my photography or talking to people about their cars and I would honestly just forget that I was recording sometimes but then I was very much reminded so when I'd hear the little video ending noise that can be distracting actually in a conversation where you're like in a train of thought and then you hear that noise you're like oh shoot I got to press it again or you just forget to press it again so you miss half of it like there should theoretically this thing has 32 GB of storage I don't think there should be a record limit in here um unless it's related to overheating then obviously there should be one but you know 5 10 minutes why can't that just be the default why does it have to be 60 seconds like yes a lot of people are going to be using this to post reals stories Tik toks and whatnot but the doesn't have to be the only use case right um sometimes you want to record five minutes of footage and then edit out a minute of it all right so you can probably hear but there's some lovely people playing music out there somewhere anyways let's uh go test these out we'll go print some photos we will uh go give it to them and try to record all on here just to kind of give a demo [Music] here [Music] all [Music] the you're sweet [Music] strong [Music] [Music] hey guys hey lovely music oh thank you I'm a photographer I made some prints for you guys oh my God thank you so much that's so sick thank you hope you like it no way I love your uh I love your guitar sound that's a great you you guys could choose who gets to keep which one you know oh my god dude thank you of course I'm Vlad nice to meet you jul how's it going I'm Vlad here take a car and follow yeah for sure that's awesome appreciate it do you guys go to [Music] B shout out to Julie and Eric they have fantastic music it was really cool to kind of see them just outside my house over here I asked her after in an email I particularly said there was a piece of technology I was using that was recording uh could you tell what it was during the time and she had no clue you can see here one aspect that I really enjoyed with the uh meta smart glasses here was POV stuff specifically I'm talking about like sports or driving these were things that I didn't really expect to use but when I was you know going to a car show I I used it in my car at one point and then one day I was just kind of randomly playing tennis it was a nice warm sunny fall day and I was like yeah it'd be cool to get some footage and just like listen to music while I'm playing tennis which which I've actually never done with earbuds uh I've only like brought like a speaker before but uh that was really cool I'll cut to some footage here of uh me playing tennis so you can see kind of the perspective and this should give you a little bit of a better sense of the stabilization cuz I am moving a lot more here in general I think the stabilization is pretty good if you're just kind of walking around or doing pretty idle things you're not going to have any shakiness you can take a look at the tennis footage here while it's still smooth uh there is a little more movement that is something that is tougher to fix in post cuz then you'll lose a little resolution which the resolution here is kind of already what you'd want to post on social media this really opens up cool perspectives like when I'm driving when I've driven I've I've hooked up like action cams and things um but this just feels so natural it's right on your face your handsfree and it can capture your perspective like exactly where you're looking so I'll cut you a little clip here and you can kind of take a look at uh the driving perspective shots I got here all right so this is how nice the the glasses are this is the car I would eventually like to have the RS4 wide body but the cool thing is like I'm driving I could just take a video immediately and it's you know recording right here very cool V8 420 horsepower only came in manual just awesome car let's see if we can hear it a little bit open the window come on give a little squirt let's go find him see if it picks up any wind noise here yeah he's going to rep watch yeah now you can hear him look at that sound one thing I really liked about these was the app I think it's super well done it syncs your videos right away your images and just super useful the only Annoying Thing I found is that you do have to like delete on your phone and in the app so if you delete in the app it's not deleting it from your phone if anything I'd rather air on the side of caution of deleting footage than deleting it and not having it later so not a huge issue but yeah the app is done very well it's like a 8 n out of 10 um just a few little tweaks in there and uh obviously viously I can't really test the AI features very well I can't really try the contextual visual Parts where it can tell you what you're looking at or uh help you with something in your in your view translate a sign that's in front of you to know what it's saying um or if you need help fixing this sad leaky faucet I'm actually much more interested in something that can record horizontal video the insta 360 go 3 for example that does 2.7k so I can crop in just to a vertical or I can have crop in on horizontal or just have the full 2.7k so things like that I think for myself who creates more long form content than short form content um I really don't post to social media much either so that's just much more useful I think it's definitely a Mis Mark of having only vertical video here but the improved quality is really noticeable the improve speakers the speakers get to a pretty loud volume if you're indoors the loudest mode is likely too high at least for me it's too high um but when I'm like outside biking or if I'm in a louder environment then actually going to full volume is more apt and it's good that they have that kind of audio Clarity and uh Audio Level the sound leakage isn't too bad um it's better than the previous version but if you're listening to something at a High Vol volum you will still have some leakage um but nothing crazy now this is all very relative on your head size I highly recommend if you're going to get a pair of these to just go to a Rayband store if there's one near you and try them out but I got the large version for reference I'm about 6' one um I do also have some regular wfirs that are like the smaller size and those do fit me fine um but I'd say if you're like under 5'7 Or something you're probably going to be better off with the small like regular size ones and if you're um a little bigger then the large size will probably fit you a little bit better they also do not fatigue over time which I was surprised with something that's a little heavier like this you would expect that over time it would get a little heavy but given that a lot of the weight is in the temple arms here it feels good like I didn't I didn't even have it shift very much when I was playing tennis so yeah pretty cool in reality I'd actually like to see a version of these without the camera maybe they'd have better battery life the speakers are you know really good in here and these are one of the best devices I've found for bike riding because you can still hear everything in your surroundings and then still have a good good amount of music and the the controls are just really easy to use so I think if they made a version that had no cameras and of course would have no visual AI would uh would really sell super well it'd be like you know if it was 150 200 bucks those would sell like hot cakes I think because that eliminates the whole privacy aspect for most people if they're if that's something they're worried or on the fence about but meta if you're listening the only other like comparable alternative for music I think would be the Bose frames Tempo and those in my opinion just don't really look very good I mean just take a look at them regarding the case it is a really nice design if you didn't know what it was you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a standard kind of Rayband case it uh does have a USBC charger on the back and there is a little pairing button down here and the case does provide a little over 30 hours of repetitive use if you're kind of putting it in taking it out using it putting it back in which I actually never found to be an issue you kind of just pop it in there sometimes it is a little tricky to take out like the magnetic Connection in the middle is pretty strong so if you don't grip it right when you're pulling it out it can take a little bit of effort um not a huge deal it's actually probably a better thing that they have it secured in here and if it fell it wouldn't just like fly out they really nailed the design here there's no no question about that these are by far the best smart glasses I've tried bar none but I think what's interesting here is that this design is getting so close to kind of an AR setup where like the meta Quest 3 is really pushing for like vr/ that AR experience an important platform for the future you know not only because they're the natural way to put Holograms in the world so we can put digital objects you know in our physical space but also because if you think about it smart glasses are the ideal form factor for you to let an AI assistant see what you're seeing and hear what you're hearing so that will be something quite interesting to see in the future on how they potentially blend those two technologies you know the meta Quest 3 has a big frame but if you boil down just the electronics inside of it it's really not that big with the potential miniaturization of those components we could certainly see something like that in the next iteration or perhaps a future iteration of the meta smart glasses which would be interesting to [Music] see [Music]
