Mercedes G350 vs Jeep vs NEW & OLD Defender: DRAG RACE!

hi everyone matt watson here from car wow so i'm sat in the new land rover defender and next to me is a jeep wrangler rubicon and next to that is a mercedes g-class next to that is an old land rover defender and we're going to have a drag race because that is really important when comparing these cars not what they like off-road actually i've done that video as well but i still want to drag race these cars because why not hey this new land rover has a 2 liter turbocharged diesel engine with 240 horsepower and 430 newton meters of torque it's got an eight-speed automatic gearbox a clever electronic four-wheel drive system it's quite heavy it weighs in at just over 2.4 tons and it costs for this particular model from 56 000 pounds that jeep is actually less expensive so that rubicon 45 000 pounds it's lighter than this land rover as well just under two tons it has a two liter turbocharged petrol engine with 272 horsepower and 400 newton meters of torque it's also got an 8-speed automatic gearbox and a real sturdy four-wheel drive system with front and rear locking diffs which we won't be using right now next to that is the g-class so that has a 2.9 liter straight six turbo diesel with 286 horsepower and 600 newton meters of torque so the most pulling power however it is the heaviest at just under 2.5 tonnes it's also the most expensive talking 96 000 pounds it's a lot of money it's got nine speed automatic gearbox a sturdy all-wheel drive system once again with three locking diffs which we won't be using moving on to the defender the old defender it has a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine with only 122 horsepower got 360 newton meters of torque a six-speed manual gearbox an old-fashioned all-wheel drive system no electronics and it's got his essential locking diff which you do manually yeah it's pretty blooming basic you're basic it's not the lightest either he weighs about 2.1 tonnes price wise you can buy that 2014 car for 33 000 pounds for a company that specializes in old land rovers called neen overland and the link to them is in the description right let's just talk to the guy who's driving the wrangler we know who it is don't we gianni you're right yanny how you doing in your wrangler it's very dirty in here i'll be honest with you i thought you'd reclaimed it for me have you been like off-roading in this or something yeah we did a big off-road test between these cars but today i thought we should drag racing that's why you're here have you figured out how to use launch control on your jeep it doesn't have launch control nice try there's no way this has launch control this just has drive and that is it i wasn't sure that he'd know that but he clearly does to launch it you're just going to hold it on the brake and see what happens i guess so it's not going to be that fast does it let's be honest it doesn't have to be that fast it only has to be faster than the other cars here do you think it will be um i hope so the g wagon is like a dead speck one the one on the end definitely the boat and i think your one just looks a little bit prettier than mine but i've got the color before we get on with the race so please and i flick it across i'm sure there's a button that's a sports mode can the person who knows about jeep wranglers tell me whether or not it has a sports mode i don't think it does no i think it's just a standard i was wrong yeah i've got like a sports mode for my gearbox but other than that my only setting is comfort i think it's the same for the g yeah the g wagon has a sport driving mode and i'm going to turn the traction troll off also it has private school education i can see and here like me and you then hey yanny yeah we're from the ghetto and then you've got hogwarts over there if only i did go to private school i'm just from part of the country where we speak properly that's a trouble i guess you're from surrey did you go to your grammar school though rory did you pass your 11 video because it's just a load of come on sam let's start this bugger sam keep it all in i want every bit in especially mr surry over there in the g wagon look at me and my tractor i mean to be fair i've got the worst accent out of everybody yeah i'd rather have herpes than your accent well just like happens you've already got your wish come true come on sam let's start this bugger i just want to say yeah the real heroes are the track crew yeah they're out they're in the cold freezing their brass balls off so fair play to you guys fair play i'll give you a little flashlight yeah they they still hate you because they're out in the cold you're gonna make them feel better mate they hate you they don't work for me they hate you you're the one that puts them out there i don't put them out there i waved to them on the way back as well you don't even wave to them you just ignore them like they're not even here so [Laughter] [Music] when rude try your best but you don't succeed what's he doing okay are you too busy waving to the track crew or something for some reason it slipped out of drive and went into neutral even though i had my foot on the brake and i was like yeah this isn't going anywhere for some reason it slipped out of drive and went into neutral does that actually into mean we were talking so much i was just like i forgot while i was here oh yeah i knew it slipped out and drive my ass you actually have to press a button to move the gear selector right so there's no way it's slipped out three two one spinning up his rear wheels come on you come on oh bugger look at that old defender goodbye defender i don't know what happened to that meeting the g me and the g me and mr surry now this is interesting i think he's going to go and bloody win it come on come on come on i don't like being back here watching yanny compete for the win come on yes i got this come on come on i got to see that race play out in front of me because i wasn't in that did he manage to beat the g i come first [Music] carl with the highest power to weight ratio did the best do you know on the start line did you realize you were spinning up your rear wheels yes i had my foot on the brake and accelerated trying to do launch in the car then i've launched and i was like quick quick put the hands down put the hands down so i could go it was really funny it was just like doing a little burnout then that g wagon actually took off really quick but then you came past all your skills just went into that car channeled through it and then it came past what happened to the defender did that actually get a whale was there an issue with the car no i think that's how slow it is just is what it is oh really okay then oops so then what exactly happened well the mercedes got a great start but the jeep managed to catch it right at the finish line both cars did the standing quarter mile in 15 seconds but which one crossed the line first we'll have a look at this photo finish and you decide we put a pin comment below vote on which car you think won the mercedes or the jeep next was the land rover defender it did the standing quarter mile in 15.6 seconds and then its predecessor was last the old defender crossed the line in a leisurely 20.3 seconds oh there let's do a rolling race from 50 miles an hour with the cars in drive on me guys oh we've got to wait for the wait stop stop stop everyone stop right now let's go because that old defender's going to catch up with us will it get to 50. okay here we go three two one go kick down no got this took forever it's me and the g again but oh i've got to pull on him now bye-bye yeah that g definitely kicked down better than the wrangler i think i might even catch the no i won't catch the jeez pulling the head mine doesn't do more than a hundred miles an hour it stops at 100. come on oh my god yes i'm going to come past you i'm going to keep on going and you've got lots of runway go through the birds oh bad strike bad strike i win i win oh my god finally died what happened did he back off in that g because around 30 seagulls when it got through the front window that was crazy did he back off or did he just keep strong he went to 100 mile an hour wouldn't go anything further just a hundred that means i beat you in that race it means the car's got a limiter which means that i beat you in that race it means i had a disadvantage because the car doesn't do more than 100. and the result was that i therefore beat you in that race that's not my fault mate we're in the results business not the excuses business oh my god he stopped at 100. let's go it does right let's do a rolling race in gear this time okay wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait that old defender a chance come on right would you do it for this speed all right three two one go oh pickup's good oh that's a good change can i catch that g i've got no more gears [Applause] oh no yanny it's happening again look oh dear look at you and your limit i'm just waiting for the defender to come past me i think we discovered that if you hadn't bottled it g-wagon in the first rolling race you would have won so no win for the defender yet but a couple of second places oh how is it in the old defender i forgot to ask it's blooming noisy and it tops out at about 81. the amazing thing was i was going along in fifth i changed into six it slowed down okay let's do a break test 70 miles an hour i think you might find it quite interesting on your tyres yummy because you've got like knobbly mud no premature braking there it is here we go come on look at him yes land rover for the breaking wind good observation there mate well done but we're still you got beaten by the old defender it breaks even better than you did yeah i've got nothing to say good nothing to say which one would say and your car's the lightest as well well it is without you in it oh there it is there it is i hope he doesn't punch me okay then so i think that's a win in the break test to the land rover second is the g then the old land rover yanny in the jeep is last i hope you all enjoyed that
