[Music] good evening and welcome to this the 24th Miss World contest which means at the original Miss World must be a plural thing in her in a mid-40s by now wonder where she is we have 57 countries represented this year one or two are here for the first time we have nurses we have students we have teachers we even have an architect here and 1 or 2 models as well they're all here lured by the crown and the title and of course the 3,000 pounds that goes with it now in every girl's luggage there is a national costume I do hope you're watching in color because if you're not it's a great pity because this is about the prettiest part of the program let's meet all the 57 contestants in their national costume starting with Miss Africa South my goodness what a national costume to start the parade of 1974 there's gonna be a mass exodus to Africa so it's evylyn williams an 18 year old girl [Music] michigan Tina [Applause] [Music] Argentina produced a winner in 1960 with Norma Capaldi Venezuela is Alethea Rivas which is 9g miss Yugoslavia number 56 Monsieur was Lafayette Branca banyak the 19 year old civil servant and finally miss Zambia the final girl in the evening dress parade in this world 1974 Christine monk oh boy the 18 year old Miss Zambia [Applause] [Music] Miss World hopefully in their national costume become a little more traditional than others and that's the last time you see girls together as usual we recorded that opening parade to telescope the proceedings and to give the judges a chance to decide which of those 15 girls they'd like to see again how do you become a judge well you need good eyesight and a firm idea of what you think are the qualities a girl will need for a hard years work as Miss well so I will now meet those judges and you have to also to be able to enjoy an argument here are the judges 9 good people and true first a man who bears a distinguished name which has produced statesmen and artist mr. Norway South Africa Spain Sweden United Kingdom United States of America [Applause] [Music] well the judge is now taking their lingering look somehow I don't know how they're gonna do it they've got to choose seven seven out of that lineup of 15 girls the seven will be this year's finalists here in their.all Albert Hall John Candy's got them all winning by a knockout already I'm sure how they choose the seven we never know but one of those girls very shortly now will become Miss World the three thousand pound first prize all that fame and fortune and eyes ahead thousands of pounds to be earned and one during the year and of course this really in 1974 when it all started but back in the 1950s with that policeman's daughter from Sweden starting all off in 1951 well I'm the most unpopular man now because I could have asked them all to move away so Miss Africa sighs will you please regretfully lead away please [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that way so don't get carried away by all let us say seven out of those 15 I hope that by now you've got seven names on your little bits of card back home wherever you're marking them on this is always the great time on the argument start at home and I'm sure they've started already anyway the judges have in fact I've been told chosen their final seven by that magical computer that worked so well and so far they've been looking for beauty and deportment now they're gonna look for personality an obvious queue for a man who never really knows what he's gonna ask them let alone what they're gonna say in reply Michael Aspel [Music] [Applause] [Music] well the 13th Miss World contest that I've worked on and it's happened at last the girls are beginning to look younger so with my remaining strength I'll point my microphone in their direction let me say it first of all that it has been the routine over the years for me to call the girls names I mean for me to call out their names and they come down to me and I question them well this year we're going to do exactly the same so here are the seven finalists first of all contestant number four miss Australia [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Gale petascale how tall are you 511 511 if you come from a family of giant yes giants and policemen yeah I have a father who's a policeman a brother who's a policeman uncle and cousins and I was a legal secretary and they're all back home safely in Australia no my mommy and daddy's here in the audience oh and I had to be careful what I say [Applause] well I think they've got mixed feelings as everyone has we're pretty dependent on ourselves but as everyone has to depend on one another I think England should do what they feel is right and what do you feel that yours is a very polyglot society what do you feel how you could describe the national character of Australians well you could sort of split them into different categories I say the men are the same as Englishmen and men all over the world and the women are is feminine all the other women although dearly said Gail thank you very much indeed miss mustard and I was I welcome the next contestant number there three years ago what did you do in the Army I was an officer and I was a sport gate a sport guide that is what we call a cushy number but I wouldn't describe it do it I do is Raley's ever Foster no nobody said anything no when they asked me about politics I've just must say I'm I'm a beauty queen and nothing to do with politics you're not interested in politics you don't want to tomorrow huh okay Yatta Yatta oh no what cylinder are you yes she was explaining that she is very fond of literature and art and wants to become a journalist or a writer correct what writing have you done before well I've done some special jobs in school and they're working a little bit together with my teacher doing some small things and I would like to do something on my own will you go back to Sweden and write but something about the experiences here in London no I don't think so why has it not been exciting oh yes a test but it's just a great memory just once in a lifetime yes you're very interested in literature and art what which period do you favor do like the pre-raphaelites know when comes to arts I'm not an expert I just like looking at arts and I'm joined going to miss you look what about literature do you like the 18th century novelist yes I am my favorite author is Henry Thoreau it's an American yes fine I got an answer thank you very much miss Lee well five down and two to go we meet contestant number 53 miss United Kingdom [Applause] [Music] Helen Helen Morgan hello you want a very unusual national costume what was that about that's the Welsh national costume ah not a pointed hat I expected to see a big point there no that's a more modern one that's the 1974 version yes you're not well spawn are you no I wasn't born in Wales but I've lived practically all my life in Wales can I ask you something do you think this country is in state of moral decline and plunging towards an Armageddon or you a firm believer in the indomitable spirit of man and the dignity of the species what is your ambition I don't really have any great ambitions I think just to maybe travel a bit and did a nice job that I like have you been told beforehand what a year as Miss World would be like what kind of commitments you would have yes yes what might it involve what does she have to do I mean from we see her vanish from these shores and and she comes here usually a year later what do they have to do I believe it's just visiting different functions and attending a public relations job fine thank you very much Helen Morgan and the seventh of the seven finalists is contestant number 54 miss United States of America [Music] terrianne Browning now you've got an extraordinary stove interests and activities tell us about the skydiving you've done I love it I've made three jumps so far and I'm only on static line status now but I hope to make a couple more static line means that you don't pull the no I've no I haven't pulled through my self it it opens up when I jump out of the airplane what sort of heights you jump from thirty two hundred and then three thousand four hundred was the next one can you tell me about this macrame art that is one of your interests it's the art of knot tying and you can make wall hangings you can make vest you can make planter holders and everything it's just it's just I love it tying knots in in all kinds of tweet or anything anything that you can tie a knot in what would you do if you were asked to find a solution for the hijacking problem you being a flyer what do you think they should do in the cases of international hijackers I think they do a pretty good job right now after traveling through here to London I think the best thing they could do is what they're doing right now is the x-rays and the checking with the metallic detectors absolutely thank you very much Helen Terry and browning this United States of America and as Terri Ann browning joins the other six finalists the judges have the most difficult part of the evening to to choose who will be Miss World of 1974 don't forget the first prize is three thousand pounds and a guaranteed earning of 10,000 pounds throughout the year to come the other prizes go from 250 pounds up to the first prize plus of course the travel and the various other interesting jobs they're having a little microphone trouble here this evening you might have noticed that I've changed about three times anyway the judges pencils are working furiously a few eyebrows going up and down as well and as soon as this particular ordeal is over because this is just about the tensest part that final parade Albany's tightly clamped together and the girls will be going backstage there and we should watch the final moments waiting for the signal for the judges to say they have seen all that is necessary cameras whizzing around and the judges have decided that enough is enough thank you very much indeed girls the ordeal of this particular part is over miss Australia would you kindly lead off please [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and so these seven finalists go backstage for the last nail-biting section of the contest but what about the other fifty girls I said at the beginning of the contest that we'd seen them all for the first and last time but it does seem rather shame that they should come all this way to London and appear just for a few minutes in their national costume so what they've done they've all come back onstage the other 50 girls and they are not just here to be seen they are here to be heard because they've been practicing well it may not Orpheus choir and I'd like to thank all 57 Miss World contestants for brightening up our grim and London's November my god we needed it now they're all collecting backstage of course for the final moments of the contest very shortly I shall be getting a nudge in the back to tell me that the decisions have been made you'll be seeing the view backstage as the winner is announced and if you see any eyeballs on anything and I also should be extremely surprised because this isn't really that sort of contest so in fact it's rather strange people talk about in this world contest as if
