us a little bit of what they're like they're very similar to the girls that I competed with topics of conversation are the same you're gonna be seeing some real personalities up on that stage tonight okay now I'm gonna ask you to lay your cards on the table with the ladies from Eastern Europe Croatia and Poland are very strong the Scandinavian countries Sweden Norway and Finland they're gonna be up there tonight and as usual you're going to see us in Venezuela and of course is from hearing the crowd behind me miss South Africa is a crowd favorite tonight but remember they're still keeping us round they are simply asked to select the ten contestants they feel she could beat in the semi-finals our independent scrutineer reg Poole adds the judges personal selections and the ten girls with contestants with the highest marks become tonight's semi-finalists these girls are judged in beachwear ball gowns and the final five are asked to question but of course it's not just the title they semi-finalists and for John sessile and Sam beret thank you while they all looked great but then again I'm pregnant so any woman in beachwear it looks wonderful now Gina what stood out with these girls I think they look fit and fantastic and they're having a lot of fun if there was some encouragement from the crowd guys it takes a lot of confidence to get up there and parade in front of millions in your Beach where my pics worked Croatia Venezuela South Africa even though I cannot believe that she stays looking that way eating hamburgers I know some people have all the luck huh well the competition still wide open remember we've still got the ballgown parade in the semi-finalists comments before the judges have to decide on the final five now it's time to join our Miss World question please Miss Philippines how would you tell a girl who's suffering from low self-esteem to feel better about herself well I'd tell her to believe in South in herself because it's not only physical beauty that's important it's also inner beauty like what the little prince said what is essential is invisible to the naked eye and I believe that character and personality is more important to see me sir I didn't understand but that was fine that was fine but did you think that did you think it's outdated the swimsuit mean do you think it's out of fashion okay it's okay thank you very Juliet Prowse Julia if your question please Miss South Africa is a fellow South African next year is gonna be a very important year come April 27th what is your feelings about it well I'm very hopeful about South Africa as I've been saying to all South Africans the reason why I'm hopeful because the people of South Africa the white people as well as the black people are working towards unity and peace which is the most important thing that we need right now in South Africa thank you people thank you very much Miss South Africa thank you and now Miss Venezuela would you please join me here and put that lovely hand in the Hat and pick out a name who do we have here Frederick Forsyth Freddie your question whereas when we've been looking for qualities yeah when you meet another person what's the quality I think the most important human quality is to be sincere every time and to be your own person not trying to imitate another one just being yourself every time any any where you are thank you no imitation was you Miss Venezuela thank you okay last Miss Jamaica please come over here darling hope there we go everyone shy they want to walk behind alright the name of the card ah Grace Jones your question grace yes yes I'm a fellow Jamaican as well but I was thinking has it ever crossed your mind during the pageant that if you did win Miss World that you felt that one of the other contestants might have disturbed it and give away your throne something I have been brought up to be a very humble person and a very sincere person and during this pageant I have met so many beautiful and wonderful people and all of us are winners in her own right and I buy some divine intervention if I do manage to win this crown tonight I would say that there are other girls I feel that are eligible for the title they do possess the qualities that I feel would make a wonderful ambassador for the world that would help and if another girl wins I would be very happy for her I would congratulate her and I would help her in the best way I can thank you thank you very much ladies and gentlemen there they are the five finalist for Miss World 1993 let's give them a warm Sun City ovation and thank you to our judges Thank You Doreen over to cream and Jeana in the booth Thank You Pierce Wow some very difficult hard questions and some very poised wonderful answers these women handled their themselves you can hear the crowd stirring I think they were quite impressed with some of the answers from these girls this is a crucial part of the competition the judges need to see how these girls respond under pressure and you can't ask for any better than those five contestants no and one didn't speak English very well and she still came across her beauty came exactly even when you don't speak English they express themself perfectly that's right well Gina our part of the evening is over believe it or not time flies I'd like to wish all five finalists the best of luck pause a moment to reflect on one of the more serious aspects of tonight's ceremony yes Peirce it was as long ago as 1962 that Eric Morley the chairman of Miss World decided that the contest should become more than just another beauty pageant and that a contest representing the world should have some kind of social relevance by 1969 his wife Julia now the International president of Miss World coined the phrase beauty with a purpose and since then Miss World has been instrumental in raising over a hundred million dollars for disadvantaged children around the globe [Music] you can certainly stand up and take a bow Julia please add to that figure our two very important beneficiaries variety clubs internationals lifeline project and Southern Africa's United Nations sanctioned operation hunger so here in a tribute to the concept of beauty with a purpose please welcome on stage our Miss World performers and specialists Lou Gossett jr. and Jacqueline Bisset over India [Music] who's to say you have to lose for someone else to win my for the boys to just last one when you play the game [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes it is time time to listen to understand and most important to care and that is why we are here tonight to help the beneficiaries of variety clubs international lifeline project a scheme which provides life-saving medical treatment to the underprivileged and handicapped children around the world they do this by lobbying the world's leading doctors and specialists managing to obtain the finest treatment for deprived children at a fraction of the real cost so a $50,000 operation could end up costing less than five thousand dollars variety clubs international pledges to give the gift of life to at least one child every day of the year but tonight's proceeds will also be serving southern Africa with the pain and suffering upon and starvation are with us all the time [Music] where's my brother at your store nor his way I don't know because I know we feel the same have a good sleep when is and [Music] yes it is time time to care for and for years now operation hunger here in southern Africa as refused to accept that starvation should be effective life despite ever increasing numbers of people requiring aid operation hunger has persisted in its fight against hunger putting into practice the proverb give a man a fish and you feed him for a day teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime [Applause] in operation hunger effectively aiding over two-and-a-half million [Music] the children safe remaining funds are used but operation hunger self schemes which helped distressed communities regained the dignity by enabling them to provide work and food for themselves so many lonely searching for one [Music] [Applause] [Music] right [Music] sadly it's a fact that somewhere out there understand ice African sky there are still children who are hungry neglected and alone there are adults who are watching helplessly as their children die before they themselves may succumb to hunger and disease herd operation hunger is fighting back and our contestants were taken to see just how effectively they're coping with this problem in the areas where operation hunger who supplied tools and materials the girls saw self-help schemes which have gone from being totally dependent on food the communities that are now completely self-sufficient capable of feeding themselves there were no pot-bellied starving children to greet the girls who came to symbolically hand our food because this was one of operation hunger successes but Africa is hanging on by a thin thread and out across the far reaches of this massive subcontinent there are people who need our help needs to know we care especially the children [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] people need our help need to be given back their dignity and the new Miss World found here tonight will become a roving ambassador for the beauty with a purpose project a symbol of love and hope she will carry with her an awesome responsibility of raising awareness and funding for the handicapped and deprived children of this troubled world and while the state of the world leaves us with some things to be proud of we still have to reach out to each other and help to instill in our societies some sort of concern for those less fortunate than ourselves so that there will be hope of creating a better more concerned world we have the chance of helping others let's reach out with all the love we can muster and make tonight a meaningful experience we may never
