only the federal government has the resources in reach to make a meaningful dent in illegal gun trafficking across state lines they must do more and we are ready willing and able to work in further partnership in this crucial work she waited until there was a house fire before she brought out a hose chicago mayor lori lightfoot there pleading with the attorney general merrick garland now to send atf agents to the city for six months after chicago hit a 25-year high in the number of murders this comes after the democrat proposed slashing 80 million dollars from the chicago police department budget in 2020 during the defund the police protests and it's a 180 from a year ago when then president trump offered to help her in her city lightfoot said back then in a highly charged letter quote please stop with the rhetoric and find the moral courage to simply support the needed actions kayleigh mcinerney wow yeah wow is right she went on in uh criticism of the trump administration's plan to call these individuals secret federal agents and her exact words were if you send them it will foment a wave of massive opposition in my city but now she's singing a very different tune unfortunately though hundreds and hundreds have lost their life because of the politicism politicization of crime in chicago and we see this everywhere i remember when mayor wheeler called federal agents paramilitary forces remember the federal agents who went to stop the burning down of buildings and the violence we saw there jim clyburn played into it analogizing these federal agents to the gestapo you know we routinely hear this rhetoric from the left and unfortunately it comes at a very deadly price uh you know last hour leslie we talked about the 57 children who have been shot and killed in chicago this year and my question was what does mayor lightfoot say now to those families i'm not saying every single life would be different but if she says this is what it's going to take to change lives going forward maybe they could have all been saved i want to quote the mayor because as you know as a democrat i don't just say hey i'm gonna support somebody because they're on my side of the aisle a part of my party i call out people when i see it but for people to say that she wanted to defund the police that is not accurate this is what she said and i quote we are she was actually by people in my own party and the people of chicago she was chastised and criticized because she didn't want to defund the police she was facing a 1.2 billion dollar pandemic induced budget shortfall so she did not increase the police budget and this is what she said quote we're not doing that when they said to defund the police that we have to fund both public services and we have to fund the police what she's asking for now for six months from the batf the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms specifically is to assist with gun trafficking which her sources are saying are very problematic in the city and and now the numbers are not what they were before president trump had offered the help to her at that time so look having interviewed other mayors mayor of kansas city who says reallocating funds we're not going to lift the budget when you know the budget needs to be lifted and you don't meet between where you are and where you need to be you're basically unfunding them we'll use a different word but it means you didn't give them enough cash and what i want to know is what happened to that gap where's that money and and the second thing here is for those people who died in crime in her city why didn't she take that help from trump why did she wait until the house was on fire to bring out the hose ben because he was a republican and let's be very clear about this mayor if you say she didn't defund the police she certainly dehumanized them and she turned them into the bad guys talking about them being undercover individuals like they're evil people that are going to come into the city and they're going to brutalize the people of chicago just for the record by the way the same people that trump wanted to send were the same exact people holding the same exact jobs this year so she was terrified of them when trump wanted to send them then if that's her standard she should say no to them now because they're just as scary because they hold the same jobs the thing about her is this she didn't like the fact that donald trump wanted to help because it meant that she was failing and instead of just saying i'm going to do what's great and what's right for my city and protect the children protect the elderly protect those that are victims of these heinous crimes she said no i put politics in front of it i don't want the extreme left to come after me so i will allow for the idea that law enforcement's evil and bad and i will put that in front of your safety and now she says okay we screwed up without saying it by saying please help us out federal government people are dying because these decisions and it's not just in chicago my hometown of memphis tennessee you have a mayor there crime out of control robberies out of control and you know what he said the other day i'm not really worried about crime i'm going to put a ferris wheel as my top priority on the mississippi river so that you won't look at crime leslie i have to go back to you i mean when you hear that what is your reaction to ben and the memphis situation is a compelling example compelling is a gentle word well i certainly don't believe and i would hope that any mayor or governor would not uh would turn away help for their people uh simply because of political party we're seeing peop we've seen ron desantis uh support president biden when he helped in florida the federal government helped in florida we've seen it most recently in kentucky republicans not only accepted the help but they were thankful for the help so i i don't buy it was political the city was at a different a different point at that time and the gun trafficking related violence was at a different point at that time as well that's not true all right anybody quick one lauren it's just not true i would just i mean it's just not true people are dying it's not it is true look at the numbers decision it's not it is true you look at the gun crimes you look at the violent crime you look at what's coming into these cities i'm a victim of a gun crime in my hometown you look at the stats year after year after year it's the same people committing the same crimes over and over again and liberals and prosecutors are letting them out because they said we're going to defund the police and we've dehumanized the police that's why she attacked agents when trump she explained she ex she ixnayed the electronic monitoring program because she found the recidivism rate among those s that segment of the population the electronic monitoring they were committing crimes while they were being monitored and she's getting more grief from liberals on crime right now not then she is from conservatives leslie give me one policy in her tenure as mayor that she has done to lower crime in the city of chicago i just said it she got rid of the electronics it's not one that's that didn't lower crime it went up the stats say that crime went up no no that that is not correct we because it's just happened we actually don't know that yet ben let's be fair in in a month or two year over year violent crime in chicago has skyrocketed the number of people that died is skyrocketed the number of dead children has skyrocketed you can't particularly the category of homicide no bingo you cannot uh okay well there was one crime uh that got lowered i suppose jesse smallett that was in chicago right i'm being facetious to move on lauren we will catch you twice on the flip how about that no problem thank you see you then great debate
