hey guys so this video is going to be a twofer this is going to be one exporting maya to unreal just assets and then the other part of the video is going to be exporting maya to unreal but with animations which is a little bit different than just exporting the asset as it is so to get started i'm going to be using the same model i used for the maya to max video just to keep things as pretty simple as it is if you've already exported the asset before from imax it's pretty much the exact same process to do it to unreal we just make sure we select our objects that we want to export file export selected we make sure we change our file type to fbx export it's very important to remember this it has to be fbx export or obj export those are the only two options it has to be those two so uh once again we're gonna save over the full body fbx make sure the file type is right and we're gonna export the selected yes we want to override it now once we have our scene open and unreal there's two ways to do this the best way to do this so you make sure you get everything that's attached to the asset is you go to import you're going to go find the file you want to import which we already know where we saved our file we're going to do the full body and so we're going to import this uh we make sure everything is selected that we want we want the auto generate collision obviously we want to make sure everything looks right we're importing on a zero zero zero one scale and we just hit import everything should be just like this all right we're gonna import it'll take a couple seconds but we will get a fully import object now it looks weird because the asset is broken up into the different pieces but do not panic it just rely it just realizes that there are two separate pieces to this full asset if you drag and drop it into the scene it goes all back together into one asset so you don't have to worry do not panic about that it'll drop it in as a single asset even though there are two pieces see so that's the easy part that is an asset for maya to unreal super simple there is another way to do that exact same thing but you may not get all the assets all the things attach the asset this the other way so this is the best way to do it so we're going to force delete all this because the next part of this we're going to be using the same assets we just need to and we don't want to have to worry about overriding them so i'm going to start a new scene i'm going to import the scene that i want to use which is the jab cross okay so this scene this asset actually has a rig to it which is how we apply an animation so if you want to see real quick just to show you what i mean we are going to hide the selected and boom there is our rig this is what applies our animation it has already been attached to our skin and assets so it's all ready to go so we'll make sure we show selection bam and there they are you guys see it in the fingers where they are those are the joints those rounds but we're all set so to export this there's two ways we can export it just the same way that we did the just the asset it's where we select everything that we want to export but seeing as how the scene is everything we want we're just going to export it as all so we're going to go to export all we're going to make sure we change this to fbx or obj i prefer fbx as my personal choice obj is okay as well it might be a little bit different control system now when we're in this fbx format we need to make sure that the animation is selected so under the options we need to go to animation and we need to make sure that the check box is on the animation check box if it is not it will not attach the animation okay it has to be selected we're going to change this name to we're going to do a name connection to animation body remember file type fbx export and under animation in the option tabs it has to be checked if it is not checked you will not get the animation attached to it export all all right now okay guys now for importing the animated asset into unreal there's a few things we have to be aware of when we're importing them so first things first we're going to go back like how we imported the asset but now we're going to import it as an animation same way hit import we're going to find our animation with the asset or asset with the animation either way while we say it so the animation full body we are going to open it now one we have to make sure that the skeletal mesh is selected because that's what the animation is bound to is the skeletal mesh we also need to make sure that the animation import animation is clicked on most of the time it's off this has to be on if it's not on it will not attach the animation to a skeletal mesh and you won't have anything to import so we're going to go import all once we make sure those two things are imported or clicked we're going to import all it'll take a second boom so once we're done we should have four animation objects and then the skin textures if you embedded them into the asset but that's not important so to see your animation what you do is you click on the pink animation full body it's just a skeleton imagine you're going to drag it into your scene look at that there's our little uh character model now when you look over here onto the right you'll see that it says animation transform an animation underneath the animation tab it says animation mode we are going to click on the animation mode and we're going to choose use animation asset because when we import our animation and click on import animation as well it created an animation asset it's there's a green one right next to the full body and we're going to click hold down the click button the left mouse button and drag it into the animation to play your model should jump to the position that you had set up for the start of your animation now if we from there we can save our current always save as you work i do it all the time so we're going to save this to yeah we'll say that it's perfect and then we're going to hit play now my character's position is to the right but if we look to the right of it there it is our character our asset is animated
