what is it that makes an internet icon is it a Charming personality is it a new and Innovative format or perhaps a unique idea that's never been seen before is it the Mastery of one's craft or is it the ability to keep that craft fresh and up with the times well today we're looking at a man that does all of this and probably even more Q the [Music] intro [Applause] [Music] good evening ladies gentlemen and on binary Pals and welcome to what makes or breaks where today I'm going to be telling you the story of an internet icon a man that builts his entire Empire from the ground up and a man that have solved some of the internet's most difficult questions and ga gathered a fan base unlike any other this is none other than Matt Pat the father of Team theorist and an inspiration to all but how exactly did he get here and what is it that makes him the most famous crazy internet nerd of all and such a beloved content creator while to answer that we need to go back in time back approximately 15 years to 2009 when a young Matthew had just graduated from Duke University after concentrating in neuroscience and moved to the polluted and rat-infested streets of New York where he would spend approximately 2 years posting acting auditions on YouTube in case anyone needed an actor you can ED please come back play unfortunately he would spend 2 years unemployed until suddenly in 2011 something changed what you ask well he updated his YouTube channel from a place to upload auditions to a sort of portfolio for those of you that don't know what that is in non-investment terms it's defined by Clark University as a compilation of academic and professional materials that exemplifies your beliefs skills qualifications education training and experiences basically it's a collection of your work where you show off your abilities and in Matt Pat's case this showcase would be his ability to research write and edit videos online whilst also letting a small internet audience who found his channel enjoy his Creations until April 2011 when matpat after watching an episode of extra credits on tangential learning decided to get inspired and create something himself but what would he make after all he was an unemployed and at the time irrelevant little man in a recording closet with a trusty laptop well he sat down and did what he did best he theorized and with his wild interest in video games as well as his academic talents he got to idea sketching and who would have thought it but all you need to create something revolutionary is a crazy dork of a nerd and a dream and just like that with a script in one hand and a microphone in the other bada bing bada boom game theory was born web browser and let the knowledge wash over you like a warm bath after a long grinding session hello Internet welcome to Game Theory when it comes to improving your mind this show is super effective the adventure kicks off with a science experiment gone wrong like last time when we talked about how to use body language to tell if someone's lying to you truly a useful skill but while all this may be shocking it pales in comparison with today's topic that Mario is a communist sympathizer but hey that's just a theory a game Game Theory thanks for watching Matthew Patrick without knowing it had just single-handedly started one of the most hering inspirational and Fantastic Adventures in Internet history by being himself with a $20 microphone and sitting in a closet that he did not fit in he managed to start something other creators could only dream of the concept of applying real world logic to video games was an unseen idea at the time and being the first to truly grab a hold of it mat pad had the time to perfect it but Perfection would take time and the evolution of Game Theory starts right here and that Evolution would continue on for a long long time and in 2012 game theory officially reached 50,000 subscribers here on out the channel would continuously reach new highs with videos such as Mario is a communist surviving the leap of faith and Link is dead all getting millions of views each but skip forwards to 2014 and something else would find its way into game theory for one matpat started film Theory which will be a big talking point later but within Game Theory a strange phenomenon would occur the start of something bigger a series that would haunt matpat until this very day and it all starts s with Five Nights at Freddy's hello once again theorists welcome to Matt Pat plays today we are playing the scariest game of all creation probably never heard of it it's called Five Nights at Freddy's here we go what's this it's c the camera came up was was that a bunny was that a bunny I think it was a bunny oh god there was only the fan it's only the fan only a fan just a fan just the fan what that's it Five Nights at Freddy's came out on the 8th of a August 2014 and instantly became an internet sensation for some reason the idea of sitting on your ass for hours only pressing some buttons and having a screen to look at caught the attention of a few of the internet's largest faces oh and there's also the murdery possessed animatronic robots designed after cute animals that want to actually kill you but yeah that's just a small Detail no matter the reason FNAF almost instantly took the Internet by storm and thus the era of over reactively screaming at jump scares was born no now back to our favorite crazy internet nerd he also took notice of how incredibly popular this series was and since FNAF released in August it was only fitting that 2 months later in spooktober itself Matt bat would tweet this Slender Man versus FNAF at the time I would be lying if I didn't say that my bets were on slender but in an unexpected turn of events FNAF won the poll by a landslide and so maspat began to dig a Little Deeper but what on Earth could be found in a horror game about animatronic Pizzeria mascots well after digging around what he uncovered was some of the most creative and well-hidden storytelling in Internet history that's right it's time for lore by reading newspapers on the walls and making some critical assumptions madpat came to the conclusion that the events in FNAF had to be based somewhere in the real world which then LED Matthew to compare it to the real world Colorado shooting of 1993 in which an ex-employee of chuckecheese promptly shot the rest of the people in the building after opening hours in all five people were shot and the killer was arrested but the Curious Thing is that one of the victims survived the one matpat the theorized to be golden Freddy this then LED Matthew to conclude that this was the story that FNAF was based on he would then go on to post the video on October 23rd 2014 the video was as all other Game Theory videos a major success but unbeknownst to matad this one video would start the single biggest video series on the channel a series that would hun matpat to this day and it would even land Matthew and a role in the FNAF movie almost 10 years later for now though matpat would not worry about counting foxy toes so much and rather focus on his personal and his Channel's growth and in the same year matpat launched film Theory the movie and TV series counterpart to Game Theory a sister Channel if you will and oh boy did the film theorists do well in the first month after its release in May the film theorist's Channel reached 1 million subscribers a milestone that took Game Theory significantly longer only reaching it in 2013 2 years after starting film Theory launched strong with Harry Potter Doctor Who and even a theory on Game of Thrones and with his already comprehensive knowledge about how the YouTube algorithm worked as well as experience in knowing what people would watch and what would get views is it really a surprise that film Theory reached 1 mil in less than a month no no it really isn't this then completed the second piece in the theorist quadfactor quadfactor quadfactor I really don't know but even though the last two pieces would need until the 20 20s to complete the next channel that matad would start wasn't far [Music] away and what was that next Channel you ask something new and exciting maybe some new Theory Channel or a new game show style Channel or something nope nope and nope matpat's next YouTube child would be something far more relaxed something far less professional and more genuine than the rest of his catalog the odd one out if I may say so myself a channel that would hold the record for the longest content by far and a channel that wouldn't fill out a piece of the theorist quadfactor a channel where he could be himself look at what the community was doing or play games as you wished and on the 15th of September 2015 it was released unedited genuine and unafraid was GT life the third child of the theorist team and the Oddball in the family here madpad would often sit with his wife Stephanie on camera on their couch and react to posts or play video games together with its completely unedited and long form style it's not really aimed to being a YouTube Star hit but it wasn't supposed to be GT live was a place for matpat to relax and brainstorm new ideas for theories with his team and with his audience on camera and even though this didn't entirely catch onto the YouTube algorithm a certain video he would upload just a year later in 2016 absolutely would on the 15th of September 2015 the same day that GT live was created it actually another internet thingy magig was released to the public however this one would not just be a YouTube phenomenon but would create possibly the most infamous fan base of all time it all started with a tiny indie project by someone named Toby fox in the beginning it was supposed to just be a little Kickstarter with a goal of $5,000 however very quickly that goal would be demolished and the actual game would start development and thus one of the biggest games of all time a game that would be so universally loved that it would become hated and one of the most revolutionary game Concepts ever would be born this was the birth of undertale and the prequel to Sans is Ness undertale and Earthbound are some of the most well known and beloved games of all time both being singleplayer RPGs focused on unique turn style combat an amazing storyline and of course thrilling gameplay in fact these two games resemble each other so much that people even sometimes started to talk about them like they were prequel and Sequel and with that kind of resemblance comes some interesting theories one of which was uploaded on the 9th of February 2016 to the game theorist's YouTube channel a rather Niche little theory about two of matpat's favorite games and a possible connection between them the title Sans is Ness and with this Theory matpat's life would be changed forever in the theory matpat would talk about how mysterious the character of sans is how he seems so out of place with his laser goat heads teleportation abilities knowledge of saving and loading and the main focus of the theory his secret lab by pointing out similarities and suspicious coincidences in both games like how the outside world in undertale looks the photos and the badge in sansa's lab and the design on papyrus's body armor matat got to the conclusion that NES from Earthbound had somehow taken the Earthbound time machine with his biological body and been sent to undertale as just a skeleton as the time machine doesn't allow biological matter now this theory is obviously not true no one in their right mind would believe this but the undertale community and the internet as a whole took it way too seriously and the backlash that this video got was simply crushing from people [ __ ] on it and making essays to people straight up disrespecting matpat as a person it really must have sucked for him and honestly I still feel bad when I hear him address it I also left this thing of a comment on the next major undertale video he made it's not important at all I just wanted to share this garbage The sans's Nest video got so much backlash that for a long while Matthew feared making undertale content yet he still enjoyed the game and his love for it would be evident in what was probably one of the most important moments of matpat 2016 his meeting with the [Music] Pope and um I was wondering probably the hardest thing or one of the hardest things I would assume about being Pope is having to take a stance on controversial topics I am not always successful sometimes I fail basically the pope has to meet with YouTubers from around the world it's a big part of your job um um and the stance that you take your opinion is going to anger a lot of people not to talk about being Catholic or anything religious but to talk about how the internet can bring people together I always say it is my fault if I fail it is my fault something failed in my system on the 29th of May 2016 a host of 12 YouTubers were shipped off to Rome for one very simple Mission meet the pope and introduce him to internet culture it just so happened that our favorite crazy internet nerd was one of those selected and that my friends is how the pope first encountered the amazing menace to Scott Clan's mentality that is matpat and along with matpat he also encountered undertale you see when meeting someone as important as the pope himself you kind of have to give a hey I respect you gift and whil some other officials gave a surfboard an illegal plant and even a copy of a book that someone literally wrote about themselves what Matt gave was different and if you look away from the silly goofiness of giving the pope a copy of undertale I think the thematic and metaphorical impact fits a lot more the pope had earlier announced that 2016 would be the year of Mercy for the Catholic church and in the words of matpat Mercy is a word that appears a a whole heck of a lot in undertale fitting but some people still gave Matt pad hate for it so I'm now going to convince you that the haters are wrong and the fact that undertale is probably the single best game to represent the Gaming Community with should probably do that for me you see whilst other more famous games exist yes they're all created by big companies or have become massive corporations Over time however undertale from its debut as a literal Kickstarter to its present day domination over the Internet hasn't really expanded that much as a studio it's still just Toby Fox and I think the thought of a little idea steamrolling the world with a brand new and unique idea attracting Millions yet staying niche in comparison to other media is a pretty good analogy for The Gaming Community as we really do stay isolated from the rest of mainstream media despite having the numbers to Domin if we wish to do so and with that matpat talked with the Pope not only about games but about cyber bullying protecting those we hold close and showed the world how truly amazing the online community can be 2016 however would not end there as a new idea had come up for YouTube instead of everyone complaining about the ads why not add a voluntary Subscription Service where you can pay to download videos and remove ads at the same time and thus YouTube premium was born in 2014 however in 2016 a new perk was added for YouTube premium members a new form of content locked behind a pay a form of content that got funding from YouTube itself and allowed some of the most prominent creators on the platform to rise even higher and so matpat's gam lab was created on YouTube Red for the last 5 years I've made a name for myself overanalyzing video games using real world science and math but now I'm taking it to the next level so gam laab really at its core is testing video game mechanics in real life life feel about horror games I think I'm uh medium spicy in terms of guys like you see in video games all the time these kind of obsurd funny mechanics and you're like no way is this possible in real life by throwing some of the world's most popular Gamers into the scenarios we play through every day I'm Matt [Music] Pat and this is game lab matpat's game lab was an instant success taking inspiration from game Theory and flipping the already insane concept on its head he decided to put Gamers into the scenarios that they play through on screen instead of using the real world on video games he would use video games on the real world and it's honestly some of the most entertaining and interesting content I've watched However unfortunately even though Matthew wanted to no season 2 was ever put into motion leaving the fans in the dust but in the wake of having worked with YouTube itself madpat put his schedule into overdrive and assembled a team and from here we would see the biggest growth spike in theorist history with FNAF theories continuing to dominate and a new editing Style game and film Theory grew at Paces they had never achieved before and that growth would continue to this very day [Music] however before we reach the 2020s there's one more event I would like to talk to you about a project of Matthews that was just in character having achieved wealth Fame and power matpat being the kind-hearted nerd he is decided to give back to the world that had given him so much and so on the 3rd of December 20 2019 the first # cancel cancer stream was started on the game theory Channel lasting almost 10 hours Matt Pat and a whole bunch of other creators such as the odd ones out Markiplier Scott Clin and many others talked played games and had lots and lots of activities with view counts skyrocketing and donations flying in Matt pad hoped to be able to help St judee's Children's Research Hospital with cancer treatment research and in the end it worked the stream generated an entire $1.3 million in Revenue all of which went as a donation to St judees it was truly a Christmas miracle and the event would be repeated in both 2020 and 2021 both generating even more money to save those in need truly a Pro Gamer [Music] move and with that we enter 2020 where immediately after reaching in the new decade matpat would introduce us to a new channel in the middle of a worldwide pandemic he found room to create a new channel one that him and his team had been working on for years that's right it's the second newest installment of the theorist team and the third piece of the theorist Quadra Factor hello Internet welcome to food Theory where brain food is always on the menu on the 23rd of July 2020 by using a combination of food science psychology and conspiracy matpat launched food Theory after 2 years in development a pandemic and a lockdown was the push that matpat needed to release it talking about the size of fry servings at fast food chains and how many licks it takes to get to the middle of a Tootsie Pop it was a signature mat pad creation and to nobody's surprise Matt once again showed that he's the OG theorist with food Theory reaching 1 million subscribers just one week after launch those are some insane numbers and as of today food Theory stands tall at 5.2 million subscribers and quickly approaching 5.3 and with food Theory now growing to 3.4 and even 5 million subscribers and the rest of the theory channels growing to 16 and 11 million subscribers each madpat was only going up but now what could the last piece of the theorist quadfactor truly be I mean green red and yellow could all be pretty easily guessed but blue that was a different story but Matt Pat did not not give up him and his team had an idea and with idea after idea a teaser was finally dropped many started speculating from song Theory to adult activity Theory being suggested yesterday I was here in La filming something where I got a lot of blue goo spattered all over me oh so it's sex Theory the internet were theorizing about the theorizer truly the dream of a theorist and on February 18th it was revealed the final piece of the decade long series The Blue in the quadractor and the last clue style Theory style Theory had been released and with it the theory quadfactor the the theorist trophy had been completed and Matt Pat's unfinished Symphony was now a finished Masterpiece as all other Theory channels its main focus would be math and since it was fashion based psychology and the mysteries of fashion were focused on two truly an unsolved mystery style Theory broke all previous records and reached the 1 million Mark in just 3 days 2023 would be a good year for the theorist Community as Matthew and his team hosted the 2023 streamy Awards on August 27th getting a combined 15 million views in the first 48 hours which set a new record as the most watched show in its 13-year history but alas this year 2024 would start off quite differently on January 9th of this year a certain video was posted to the game theorists channel two words that crushed all theorists across the globe a video that would impact the entire Community forever and sent the internet into to a grieving and meming spree the title goodbye internet it's not clickbait on March 9th I'll will be hosting my last Theory episode uh sorry that I keep getting emotional about this um I I I'll try not to but but it's a big deal you know like if you think about it this channel is Stephan my first child really before we we had olly before we had skip cat bat like it was this this was our baby Steph and I have known this video would be coming for the last 3 years we weren't sure it was necessarily going to be today we didn't know exactly when it would fall but we knew it was going to happen eventually and with that I'm going to say for one of the final times not the final time but one of the final times as always my friends remember it's just a theory a game theory thank you thank you for watching matpat after 13 years on the platform would be retiring leaving his career and his legacy at that in the video he addressed that this was a change that him and Steph had been working on for a while this was a theory that a lot of people had after Matthew told us that he had sold theorist to lunar x a new startup company in late 2022 with him retiring as host everyone expected the channels to be let go of but of course Matt Pat wouldn't let us down like that he announced that due to the extreme stress that being host of all four channels was that every channel would get their own host Tom for Game Theory Lee for film Theory a for food Theory and Amy as the new host for style Theory and whilst the chance of things going downhill always exists I trust matpat and his extreme wit smarts and determination throughout all of these years should convince you to do the same and matpat's not gone far from it he's just stepping down as host he'll be in the background managing team theorist and he even said he wanted to start work work on a mystery Loi series and so with the announcement of that video 2 months later here we are after the final 10 theories we're finally here Matt Pat our beloved internet nerd and to a lot of us a major childhood figure has finally stepped down and cemented his legacy as one of the internet's G lest creators and I hope we can all look back at the start and see how far not just Matthew but we all have grown as a community and as people and I hope that that growth keeps growing and going because as a community we can do more than what any one person could ever dream of chase your dreams follow your heart and have fun whilst you're at it but hey that's just a theory and that ladies gentlemen and on binary Pals is the legacy of matpat
