[Music] do [Music] [Music] good morning and welcome to our live stream 10 a.m mass at st charles bro mayo church ride in this sunday's gospel we hear jesus give his proclamation of what his kingdom evolves as we listen to the beatitudes we notice very quickly that god's ways are very different from the ways of this world to be poor hungry sad or even abused for his sake are no longer understood as curses but rather moments in which god's transformative grace can give can work for the better of all in this mass let's believe in jesus's promises and try to enter into his mysteries so that we can experience the joys of his kingdom for ourselves and for the parish we live in our celebrant this morning is father greg morgan please stand as big we begin with our opening hymn [Music] longing for light we wait in darkness longing for truth we turn to you make us [Music] gather [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] in the name of the father and of the son of the okay wonderful great stuff we'll see you soon let's continue on and as usual the first thing we do because we've come to mass you've done it's a great choice you're coming to mass today brilliant choice because by being here you're going to physically receive our lord in the eucharist you can't get that live streaming but you do get that when you're present at church and so now to prepare ourselves to receive our lord we're going to ask forgiveness for the times in which maybe this week we haven't been patient or loving kind forgiving all those things that jesus wants for the others to see in you so we ask forgiveness and we receive a little absolution at the beginning so as to enter into the spirit of this mass i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i've done and in what i've failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin and all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to lord our god and may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to everlasting life amen a song [Music] is [Music] hear me [Music] we're going to say together the gloria glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray oh god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and pure grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace there's to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you and you need the holy spirit god for ever and ever amen please take a seat and we listen now to the word of god a reading from the prophet jeremiah the lord says this a curse on the man who puts his trust in man who relies on the things of flesh whose heart turns from the lord he is like dry scrub in the wastelands if good comes by he has no eyes for it he settles in the parched places of the wilderness a salt land uninhabited a blessing on the man who puts his trust in the lord with the lord for his hope he is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots into the stream when the heat comes it feels no alarm its foliage stays green it has no worries in a year of drought and never ceases to bear fruit word of the lord thanks baby to god happy are they who hope in the lord happy birth happy indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor lingers in the way of sinners nor sits in the company of scorners but whose delight is the law of the lord and who ponders his law day and night happy birthday who hope in the lord he is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade and all that he does shall prosper happy are they who hope in the lord not so other wicked not so for they like wino chaff shall be driven away by the wind for the lord guards the way of the just but the way of the wicked leads to doom happy are they who hope in the lord a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians if christ raised from the dead is what has been preached how can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead for if the dead are not raised christ has not been raised and if christ has not been raised you are still in your sins and what is more serious all who have died in christ have perished if our hope in christ has been for this life only we are the most unfortunate of all people but christ in fact has been raised from the dead the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep the word of the lord [Music] rejoice and be glad your reward is great in heaven [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to saint luke glory to you jesus came down with the 12 and stopped at a level of a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of judea and from jerusalem and from the coastal region of tyre and sidon who had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said how happy are you who are poor yours is the kingdom of heaven happy you who are hungry now you shall be satisfied happy you who weep now you shall laugh happy are you when people hate you drive you out abuse you denounce your name as criminal on account of the son of man rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy for then your reward will be great in heaven this was the way the ancestors treated the prophets but alas for you who are rich you are having your consolation now alas for you who have your fill now you shall go hungry alas for you who laugh now you shall mourn and weep alas for you when the world speaks well of you for this was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ thank you very much that's great fantastic dave i'll just sorry michael i should say that's beautiful now i don't know about i don't know about you guys oh and ladies but of all the readings that we've just heard and there was plenty of content to choose from the line of scripture that most stood out for me as i was praying with these readings was what saint paul was saying to us in that second reading he said if our hope in christ has been only for this life then we are among the most unfortunate of all people wow that little line packs a punch the most unfortunate of all people what on earth are you talking about saint paul it's kind of like a warning shot over the bowels from sin paul having taken the pulse of his community at corinth and seeing that their vital signs were weak he tried to cajole them even better maybe to to shock them into better spiritual health and it could be a real life saver for us as well today you see this is what the beatitudes is all about the gospel that we had today we call it the beatitudes these are a jesus given guide for good spiritual health the attitudes to be beatitudes if you like for a happier life even while we live on temporary visas in this world our life is short even if it was the last 100 years it would still be short and the decisions we take day after day are determining the eternal prosperity we'll have whether we like it or not now a few years ago i read this quote from archbishop fulton sheen a really well-known american archbishop and contemporary of saint oscar romero on whom i he's my model for my life i love archbishop oscar romero from el salvador anyway archbishop fulton sheen said this there is no surer formula for discontent than to try to satisfy our cravings for the ocean of infinite love from the little teacup of finite satisfaction nothing material physical or carnal can never satisfy us completely for we have an immortal soul which needs an eternal love brilliant wow and our hearts are roaring 24 days 24 hours a day like it was a lion tremendous but haven't we all gone down that garden path at some stage or another meaning you know you were born with a god-sized heart which will never be satisfied by anything this world has to offer or anyone in it no matter how much we try to do so the heart is made for god true a lot of the time we act out of ignorance we go with the flow we see people around us doing it we get jealous of what they have and so we want the same thing if only we had holy jealousy to want the other things that god is offering the problem is that we've caught a glimpse of something better nearly all of us and so it will never satisfy your hungry heart never because your heart wasn't designed for that worse still it can deform our souls until they become like sultanas shriveled up okay to such an extent that we can become stunted weak anemic spiritually speaking our souls can become like that you don't see them but you see the effects in our lack of patience their lack of love our turning to things instead of to god again this from archbishop falden sheen we become that which we love i'll say that again we become that which we love if we love what is base and useless we become base and useless but if we love what is noble we become [Music] true nobility my friends is not from being in a royal line you are in the royal line of king david that's what your royalty is and your nobility comes from here remember the ancient greek legend of king midas and his golden touch when i was a kid i heard about this one and it stuck in my memory his greatest wish was granted to him that everything he touched turned to gold at first he was wrapped he thought this is amazing now how rich can you get a table he touched turned to gold wow but when he wanted to hold a rose and smell its fragrance bingo gold too and then his little daughter comes running into him to see him and hugs him and she turned to two turns to gold now according to aristotle the great philosopher the legend held that midas eventually died of starvation as a result of his vain prayer for the golden touch okay but this is just a legend right aha but legends live on because of their relevance in each successive age and if it was of little importance why would the great aristotle bother about it in the first place and mention it look at yourselves look for yourselves at how our families are so easily divided over questions of money and inheritances i know of many cases where siblings have taken out lawsuits simply because one was favored more than another the old testament tells us that this has been going on ever since the time of adam and eve read about the bickering that went on between cain and abel which didn't end well and you'll see that really there is nothing new under the sun look at how an unchecked drive for all sorts of sensual pleasures destroys the human heart and body excesses of eating and drinking addictions and the like are wrecking havoc in our families and in our local communities even as i speak and if we live for human glory we could also die of starvation for lack of it with the beijing winter olympics not far from our collective consciousness the sad fact is that many of our famous athletes and olympians will probably suffer from depression once they leave the spotlight once the days of human glory are over so the testimony of the legend of king midas lives on it is real even if this is a legend the first reading first reading predicts that this will happen in a profound way to the man who puts his trust in man meaning in humanity who relies on things of the flesh whose heart turns from the lord he is like the dry scrub in the wilderness and if good comes he has no eyes for it see that that is happening as well even as i speak you see depending on what we focus our hearts on we'll be the kind of person we'll become jesus said wherever our treasures are there our hearts will also be sealed forever at the moment of our departure from this world will be the kind of person we will have come become instead god destined you for greater things bigger and better things as saint augustine tells us you have made us for yourself oh lord and the human heart is restless until it rests in you your heart needs to feed on god's love if not you'll always be craving you've got to satisfy your cravings for love and affection with an experience of friendship from jesus or else we risk only living for this world and what it can offer and for the people that we have around us instead of pointing our lives in the direction of heaven and becoming what god wants us to become how do we develop that friendship it's simple start today by listening to that first reading and the psalm that we have put it up on your fridge with your magnets and then read it a few times during the week it talks about putting out trust in god no matter what happens good times and in bad sickness and in health until death finally brings us together with god in an unimaginable way the first reading also speaks of the blessings that are in store of becoming someone who places their trust in god whose happiness stems from his love and his mercy and we all are desperately in need of it it says a blessing on the man on the person who puts his trust in the lord with the lord for his hope beautiful because it gives us the strength to resist evil to resist temptation temptation is trying to distract you from your higher goals in life and because of that you don't spend your enemies your energies not enemies your energies and your passions on what they were meant for and when our passions are out of line they cause all sorts of difficulties so we meant to make headway even when it seems like we're losing ground it says he is like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream so that when the heat comes and it always comes it feels no alarm it's foley foliage stays green it has no worries in a year of drought and boy we all go through those difficulties of a year of difficulties and never ceases to bear fruit this is so good to know it's such a beautiful psalm so beautiful it became number one of all the psalms number one of all the psalms that's amazing okay you'll see it in your bulletin there you have it in front of you when we place our trust in god and in jesus we have to we may have to go through all sorts of difficulties but it will be okay as the saying goes a friend in need is a friend indeed and jesus understands that one the beatitudes of today's gospel are all about this we are presented with a choice of pathways to becoming either noble and intelligent in the eyes of god or base and stupid in the eyes of all the saints for all eternity hmm so we so you are you're asked to choose who and what you are going to become by choosing the path you tread out for yourself and so he says to you how happy are you who are poor yours is the kingdom of god happy are you when you go hungry now you shall be satisfied happy you who weep now you shall laugh and that hunger sometimes is for the hunger of the things your neighbors your rich neighbors have got i see it every morning they love to drive all sorts of cars up here to drop their kids off and so the others are thinking oh how i'd love to have that car you're missing out on nothing hey you see my one little becky 28 years of age and boy she flies okay she's been to canberra she's been all the way okay and boy i see you guys should be jealous of my car instead of the others but in any case he says to us happy are you who weep now you shall laugh meaning not that god wants for you to live in misery and sadness no no quite the opposite god wants you to be rich and fulfilled and happy in the eyes of god yes it's true suffering in sadness or a part of life jesus went through it so as to show us that even the son of god went through that we all go through them at some stage or another it's a part of life but they don't have to demoralize us we don't have to be left stranded in conclusion jesus even tells us happier you and people hate you drive you out abuse you yes the word today has terrible connotations but it means that they say terrible things to you denounce your name as criminal on account of the son of man on jesus account rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy dance for joy because then your reward will be great in heaven it's like a superannuation like you wouldn't believe this was the way the ancestors treated the prophets friends jesus invites you and me included to take up our crosses and follow him not to shirk them or avoid them or drown them out in alcohol and endless entertainment see them instead as a catapult into the lord's arms if instead we choose to accumulate positions way beyond our needs or waste them on an insatiable desire for worldly pursuits so that then you have nothing to give to the poor and i hear that all the time i don't have anything to give to the poor i've seen the poorest of people always find plenty to give so if setting our hearts on becoming merely great in the eyes of the world rather than in the eyes of god we run the risk of copying the fruits of that second batch of the beatitudes but alas for you who are rich you have your consolation now alas for you who have your fill now you sure go hungry alas for you who laugh you shall mourn and weep alas for you when the world speaks well of you so friends today we're presented with a choice and the gospel so often has these jesus represents these two choices okay one side or the other he tries to make it simple for us like the overhead signs we read on the freeways speeding stop it or cop it now we all understand that one don't we because i think we've been on both sides of that equation okay the beatitudes are the overhead signs on the highway to heaven you wouldn't want to lose your license by accumulating demerit points why do you think you can keep on driving through life flaunting the road rules god has set down for you choose instead what jesus wants live your life by god's rules of the road to heaven and you can be certain that every day of your life will count for all eternity i cannot say it enough i celebrate so many funerals so many funerals and i say to them gosh do you know every day of our life we can build we can use our lives for building blocks in eternity every act of authentic love is a building block in the hands of the lord don't waste your day today on trivial pursuits set your sights on heaven and fight for it because that's the purpose of your life in this world and we don't have all the time in the world we have a limited life we've got to do the best we can but be smart and jesus will reward you for everything you do for him friends let's stand and we're going to profess our faith in god and in the eternal life that he has in front of us i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered on the pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living in the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen so my brothers and sisters the blessings of jesus is in luke saint luke's gospel and these are balanced by warnings for those who choose the way of selfishness and greed let us pray then for our needs and the needs of others around us that the church will follow the example of pope francis and honor and care for those who are poor hungry mourning and persecuted lord hear us lord hear our prayer that the church in australia and throughout the world can be this tree planted by the waterside faithful to christ and his teachings but providing fruit and shade to all people lord hear us lord hear our prayer that those suffering from hunger in afghanistan madagascar yemen and ethiopia and those shedding tears because life is overwhelming them will be held by us in prayer today lord hear us lord hear our prayer that those who are faithful to christ and are hated and denounced by others because of their situation in life their culture and religious beliefs will laugh and dance for joy because christ is in their life lord hear us lord hear our prayer that on this 14th anniversary of the apology to the stolen generations by australian parliament australians will continue to work for true reconciliation between the first nations people those whose ancestors arrived in the past 230 years and those who came come in the present day lord hear us lord hear our prayer that those who died in poverty through hunger or from any form of persecution will be received into heavenly joy we particularly remember all those mentioned in our parish bulletin lord hear us lord hear our prayer we pray especially today in this mass for the deceased members of the jabuar family for nadim mary joseph and jacqueline for gloria and george saad we pray for all of these lord hear out lord hear our prayer we thank you father for all your blessings for the grace of your forgiveness and for your constant love and compassion revealed in jesus your son who is lord for ever and ever amen please be seated as we listen now as we we listen to our offertree song and we bring up our gifts for the offer true [Music] and at the same time we're taking up the first uh first collection as you know there are two collections the first is for the upkeep of the priests here and in the diocese and the second one afterwards is for the church and the upkeep of the church [Music] for they shall possess the land for justice [Music] for they shall see god [Music] for mercy they will fight [Music] the peace amazing so we had kids church outside that looks pretty cool what did we do today you made a beehive to get stung by these yeah oh okay i thought it would get sunburned ah to take what so what's on the beehive oh it has all the beatitudes oh okay that's amazing so what have you got what did you learn that you had to okay lord wash away all of my iniquities and cleanse me of all my sins thank you center you know that's brilliant okay and thank you jared wonderful praise sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church may this oblation o lord we pray cleanse and renew us and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity's fallen state and by his suffering he cancelled out our sins by his rising from the dead he has opened the way to eternal life and by ascending to you oh father he has unlocked the gates of heaven and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth [Music] [Music] oh [Music] is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and ended willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which we poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] so the mystery of our faith [Music] and resurrection you have set us free [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and ministered to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ that we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your servants remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope anthony our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] please stand let's say together now the beautiful words of the our father the kids learn them we learn them as kids but they're really profound let's think about them as we say them our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you shall enter under my roof but if you say the word my soul shall be healed and may the body and blood of christ bring us all to everlasting life and so we'll just be having communion from down the front today um and if there's anybody here who's not a catholic or for some reason can't receive holy communion especially the kids come down and ask for a blessing from us we'll know you're looking for a blessing by having your arms just like that that's perfect thanks very much it always happens the body of christ [Music] as we place our trust in you [Music] this love can never be measured god's beauty is [Music] our trust in you the word of the lord means a patient gentle god whose love can never grow weary god's mercies as we praise our trust [Music] for the word of the lord is [Music] measured god's beauty is like nothing we have ever seen so let us our trust in god lord let your mercy be on us as we praise our trust [Music] we thank you lord for the great gift of your love and your friendship your patience with us is endless you accompany us as we learn how to put your gospel into practice and you help us especially to be able to live our life at a higher level we ask you to bless us in this mass that we may be able to listen to your words put them into practice and experience the blessedness the
