Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
One of the most disappointing experiences in my life as a fan. It genuinely put me off the sport for a long time. 118-110 was a joke then, and is a joke now.
Hagler had definitely slowed down by this point. The career shortening fight he had before this showed how tough he still was, but his timing and overall boxing skill was shown he had missed more than a step or two. If he had fought mugabi in the early 80s it'd of been over way sooner. That fight was bad, Mugabi was all wins, all knockouts.
I gave Leonard 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6
I gave Hagler 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
I could see a strong case for 11 going to ray leonard and an acceptable case for round 12
Extremely close fight. The 10-2 scorecard is fucking disgusting, though. A split decision draw with an immediate rematch would probably have been the best thing.
The result of this fight robbed Hagler of a very deserved title of an all time great. He also never got a rematch either, and basically ended his career on this loss.
At least he got paid well and has maintained his finances reasonably well.
Watching this fight this morning, I had it closer than I remembered it being. Leonard was certainly the flashier fighter and the crowd obviously loved him, but his punches werenโt doing much to Hagler. Hagler was missing wildly, but also connecting with thudding body shots and a bunch of great head shots as well. I had it 115-113 to Hagler. That 118-110 card to Leonard is as egregious as the same scored card for Canelo, makes you wonder for a second if the judges last name was Byrd.
Everyone talks about the bad scorecard, and sadly no one talks about what Sugar Ray Leonard did. He moved up in weight in a class he never competed in, while being quite undersized as proved by being able to make 154 until his career was over. He was retired for 3 years and fought a vicious guy who beat both of the guys who were the hardest to fight for Leonard. Hagler didn't have to agree, but he liked the money and the rules were inside the official rules, so fair either way.
Hagler was robbed. 118-110 is a fucking joke
Whilst Hagler was past his best, Leonard came out of three year hiatus + at a weight class he had not fought at before + retina injury and in my opinion won 115-113.
ATG win Interestingly Duran said in his book that Ray Leonard would beat Hagler because he would be able to box him. Duran also thought Leonard won. So did Mike Tyson.
Watching Leonard sprint around the ring to win rounds is why I could never put him in a top 20 all time list. Very frustrating fighter to watch.
