keep in mind it's all connected it's all connected hey welcome to screen Crush I'm Ryan Airy look the MCU likes to say it's all connected but is it becoming too connected is the Behemoth of Marvel Studios releasing so much content that it's going to collapse under its own weight and soon it's going to require a total reboot now I'll explain why a reboot would happen how it could work and how it connects to Secret Wars and later I'm going to be joined by two of the best Paul spoiler man from heavy spoilers and our very own Colton Ogburn but first here's my take a few weeks ago I saw a meme going around the internet that was what the Lord of the Rings franchise would look like if it started today and it included ridiculous prequels like Thorin Thorin 2 the gray wizard Bard king of Laketown the gollum movie Etc most movie studios will try to milk their IP for all it's worth like Sony floating the idea of an Aunt May movie no red Is that real yes they were actually thinking of doing that now Marvel Studios are very different from most Studios they love their characters they're devoted to the comics and you never feel like they're being too unfaithful to the source material but the MCU has become really complex phase one contained about 13 hours of movies and if you walked into the Avengers you could follow the story even if you hadn't seen all those movies and if you hadn't seen them then you were rewarded with tiny Easter eggs but by the time Avengers end game rolled around if you hadn't seen the other 21 films in the franchise plus Agent Carter you're gonna be lost why were you supposed to care about Tony meeting his adult father if you hadn't seen his daddy issues from Iron Man 2. my greatest creation is you or care why Thor was depressed we were dating at the time you see and I got to go to introduce her to my my mother who's dead obviously I loved Avengers end game because I am a huge Marvel fan and it's awesome but Marvel's phase 4 has created about 50 hours of content more than faces one through three combined that is a lot for the average viewer to stay caught up on imagine phase nine when it's going to take the normies like a year of re-watching to understand why multiversal Thanos Kang Loki Magneto and Dr Doom are teaming up for the acts of Vengeance Erbert that sounds awesome yeah it does high five but it also might collapse under its own weight people shouldn't have to do homework to understand a movie even if every other movie and show in the MCU is Standalone you're still gonna wanna know some of these characters for the team up films everything becomes a must watch and that's going to wear fans out so Going Back to Basics and simplifying the stories would seem like a really good idea well what do you mean by simplifying or rebooting like like do it all over no no not like that I'm not going to Amazing Spider-Man this franchise but there is a really simple way that they could reboot this universe and still keep what it is at its Essence now hold on um damn good coffee really hits the spot ER can I have some coffee no because you're a little dog but you know everybody I'm no coffee expert and that's why I like Trey the sponsor of this video trade is a coffee subscription service that matches you with your own personal coffee selection by giving you personalized recommendations based on your own preferences I mean these days the grocery store selection well it's not what it used to be you'll usually find five versions of the same brand but trade connects you with the best local Roasters that you can't find in most groceries trust me local is way better trade makes it easy for you to discover and try new coffees based on your preferences then your coffee is roasted and shipped within 24 hours of your order so you know it's going to be fresh from Farm to cup smells really good that's right Doug so for instance they paired me with dark coffees that go really well with milk it's called Ember from Alma coffee and it's straight from Honduras it's an extra dark roast with hints of double chocolate cake berry compote and Bernie marshmallow perfect for cozy movie Nights it's the kind of coffee that I would have never tried on my own but trade is introducing me to all these new roasts that I love trade also makes for a terrific present for the holiday season it's the gift that keeps on giving and right now trade is offering screen Crush viewers a total of 30 off a subscription and access to limited time holiday specials at drinktrade.com screen Crush that's drinktrade.com screen Crush for 30 off it's the gift that keeps on giving now can I have some afraid not buddy but here's a high five now back to what I was saying so let's use the comics as an example of how a proper reboot would work over at DC way back in the year 1985 the comics had spent about 30 years building a complex ongoing story but actually it spread out to an infinite number of alternate Earths maintaining continuity on such a sprawling history actually hurt the creative freedom of writers and artists so they decided to hold a massive crossover event called crisis on infinite Earths this was a massive 12-issue crossover event that touched every corner of the DC Universe and culminated with the DC Multiverse being destroyed and then reborn as a single Earth this new Earth had attributes of the original but some things were different Superman had a new origin he was de-powered Supergirl was no longer from Krypton heroes from Earth 2 now had always been on earth once just in the past now this move helped to kick-start a Renaissance at DC Comics that would give us stories like Batman year One Man of Steel and a kick-ass rebooted Justice League now over at Marvel Comics they were a little too proud of their connected continuity to just trash it instead in the early 2000s they launched a new line of comics called the ultimate Line This was a new line of books that retold the origins of classic Marvel characters but in a modern setting now the Marvel movies that we know today are based heavily on those ultimate versions of the characters hell the ultimate books even introduced Sam Jackson as Nick Fury the ultimate line was so successful that some fans of the comics wanted Marvel to ultimize all of their books and jettison all that original continuity because just like DC Marvel Comics had become increasingly complicated watch like literally any of our videos and you know we spend a lot of time explaining the comics now instead the Ultimate Universe had a literal conflict with Earth 616 and the comic Secret Wars which resulted in a temporary Universe called battle World being formed now I think that's likely what's going to happen in the mcu's Avenger Secret Wars with Kang or maybe even Dr Doom created a new planet filled with variants of Heroes from other realities so in the comics after battle world was over the ultimate universe and Earth 616 were basically combined with Heroes like Miles Morales now moving from one Universe into the new one so the movies could actually do something similar after Secret Wars if the Multiverse Saga is the end of the Multiverse then a new reality will be born afterwards and in this new reality maybe Tony Stark is still alive or Steve Rogers still has the shield maybe everything is super dark or maybe everything is super light this would give the studio a chance to recast Heroes like Tony Stark Robert's a recast Tony Robert Downey Jr was perfect in his death his death is perfect I know I know I know I love Robert Downey Jr in the role but look as a long time reader of the comic books I don't see Tony Stark as tied to one actor I didn't like that we'd never got to see Tony interact with Professor X or that Steve Rogers will never fight beside Wolverine in World War II but killing off the classic characters does give the movie something that the comics struggle to deliver fresh ideas and new stories in the comics new Heroes have been taking on the mantle with previous Heroes for decades this started in 1954 when Barry Allen became a new version of the golden nature or the flash DC quickly reinvented more of its classic golden age heroes like Green Lantern or Hawkman and we see this pattern continuing all the way up to today with Heroes like miles morale else becoming Spider-Man or Jane Foster becoming Thor but these changes are always temporary and Comics always revert back to their original formulas back to formula we're already seeing this happen in the movies the Spider-Man home Trilogy broke new ground with Peter Parker gave him access to money high tech gear took him to Europe gave him Super Friends but no way home reverted him back to what we know a poor kid struggling through school living in a crappy apartment and wearing a suit made of cloth that don't get me wrong I am pumped for the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland even if he is settling into the more traditional role that he's occupied in the Marvel universe so a reboot after Secret Wars would keep most of the elements of the old universe but could reintroduce old Heroes with new faces it would give us a chance to weave the origins of the X-Men into the early days of the MCU it could mean exciting new chapters with the characters that we already know and love t'challa could come back Marvel can make it easy for new viewers to jump on board it was time to get off my ass now we've already heard rumors that they're course correcting after phase four making fewer hours of content and focusing on quality over quantity or with this just all backfire by pissing off their loyal fans would you stay with the MCU after a reboot that's a question I want to ask my guest all right but that's just what I think I'm actually joined here buy two of the best we have my arch nemesis Paul from heavy spoilers and Screen crushes home Colton Ogburn and I can't wait to hear what you guys think about this should Marvel reboot is it getting too overcrowded Colton let's start with you do you think Marvel would could should reboot their entire franchise after phase six after phase six I think it's going to be kind of a mix and we we are definitely going to get like you mentioned an in-universe reboot I mean yes decades from now they will reboot you know the Marvel Universe the 616 MCU that we're familiar with and even it's Multiverse that's not going to be Canon anymore but yeah I do think that we are going to see the next Saga of the MCU be somewhat of an in-universe reboot maybe like a big bang kind of like you mentioned like that's what they did in the comics and you know the thing about the Multiverse Saga and how it compares to the in the infinity Saga I think that you know the infinity Saga was Kevin feige's baby and I think there's a lot of things that they've done in the Multiverse Saga that he never would have let happened in the infinity Saga like just a lot of things that they've experimented with and that's not to imply that he doesn't care about the Multiverse Saga I just think that he feels more open to trying different things and it's kind of like become a bit of a Sandbox and you know there was just something intimate I think about phase one you had the six characters and yeah at the time we're excited for them to bring in more and more but as they've introduced like 30 40 new characters that all kind of like lead their own thing it's becoming just non-sustainable so I do think that we will and need to see a point where we focus back and maybe not even on six characters but at least bring it down to maybe 10 or 12 just Central characters that we can then stem off from because the cool thing about phase one was they introduced the inter connectivity through the post-creditacy and it's like Which movie was it where the Thor hammer showed up was that Iron Man Iron Man 2 yeah so that was so cool and that's something that they could do if they reboot the universe at the end of Secret Wars and just imply hey there's a new universe but don't give us the details of what that universe is well then the next phase of the MCU could be little teases here and there what remains what's new who's going to interact here so I I think that'll be fun to see so you're telling me you don't think Kevin feige personally said turn me into a the robot from Wally at the end of She-Hulk like that was not like that was somebody else's creative decision I think that was definitely probably someone else's decision I mean yeah he had to have signed off on it are you saying you think it would just be like okay well here's the new universe and now it's good the fun is going to be in discovering what's changed in it like how would what's an example of something we would see they're using um I would think that and I mean I think you mentioned in the video uh talking about how we need to see like Tony Stark interact with Professor X that's something that we need to see and rebooting in Universe gives you that opportunity but at the same time you don't want to be in a position where oh so just all of the other films from the MCU didn't matter no they still matter and they still interconnect as part of the Canon so in terms of like what they would tease I would think that you would have like a different didn't Kevin feige mention in an interview where there's like three new Lanes of the MCU it's like the street level yeah the mystical level and the cosmic level you're talking about Ghost Rider we've got blade we've got Dr Stranger at the supernatural right we've got the street level with our announcement of Daredevil and Cosmic I could see them taking an approach where maybe we have like three different Lanes of smaller groups of interconnectivity leading up to their own like culmination films and then for like a saga Capper we have all of those you know different Lanes come together but I I don't think we're going to be seeing things like that happen as often as we have before so we may be in a situation where like a midnight Sons movie is like an Avengers movie in terms of oh we're seeing Ghost Rider and Punisher and Moon Knight and whoever team up together it would give an opportunity to maintain what we've already seen in other films understand that as Canon but give a new Fresh take and kind of a bit of wonder that I think has been lost in face and I'm not a big face for hater I I enjoyed phase four I mean no it's probably yeah it's it's the least great phase but I've enjoyed it um but I think that the Wonder has been lost a little bit that wonder that we had in the earlier phases and I think it is time to kind of dial it back a little and I think that's a way to do it um Paul what about you what do you think should they reboot where you landed on this I think that they should Star Trek it and by that I mean all of the the stuff still Cannon and they basically do soft reboots they've got time travel in the universe and we could they've also got alternate universes and realities they can do that I think they probably will streamline things after Secret Wars and then you might sort of get your bigger what if projects for a while um more disconnected things and then that'll buy enough time where they can basically be like we'll start again we'll start afresh because there is getting way too much stuff like you think about an audience now kids saying an eight-year-old kid I should have said 10 because it's easier to do the maths but say a 10 year old kid they were born in 2012 that was when the Avengers happened so they they kind of grew up on that might have got their head around it but kids being born now who are going to be hitting that age you know when when we're hitting phase six and seven there's no way they're gonna go back and watch all of the movies and all of the TV shows especially the Disney plus stuff things like you know She-Hulk Moon Knight I can't see people you know kids that age going I must go watch this thing to understand what happens so they will have to basically condense everything make it a lot simpler like Transformers that that's another example where um I was working on a trailer breakdown today and I realized like there's so much continuity here and they have rebooted it several times and you also you have lost those big names by keeping things in the same continuity like DC have been smart enough to have several versions of Batman and not just be like well the character died with Christian Bale and we're never bringing him back so I think things like your Iron Man's your um Steve Rogers they'll be brought in through the Multiverse um and then it'll be pulled together as one timeline with maybe different actors um who who are already to take you know a 10-year part of their career where they're gonna play these roles um and I can see that the continuity very much being in place if you want it to be in place but it'll also be a case like with Star Trek with the JJ Abrams reboot where yeah if you want to jump on from this point it's fine and you don't need to know anything else we might we might reference some of this stuff for the older fans but you can 100 you can 100 just jump onto this and go from there I don't know why I said 100 like that so am I an idiot well because you're English um okay so the problem though with the JJ Abrams reboot is um the eight that particular movie had that one line it was like it's an alternate reality an Ultra precisely which basically gave fans like me permission to shut up and enjoy the movie which is fine but then you're having to maintain this other continuity I know you talked about other Batman being a pro and it is but it's also hey well there's Batman fatigue but we're not going to talk about that right now but it's also like fans might get confused like your casual fan will be like wait is this from The Joker movie is this guy gonna fight the Joker and kind of what I addressed earlier with DC you know in their comics from the 50s through the 80s when they introduced a Multiverse the continuity got ridiculous like they were never as guarded with their continuity as Marvel always has been with like story Bibles things like that so what you're describing kind of sounds like they would hit that territory where it's like okay so this timeline wait was that okay wait is that the timeline where shuri became black panther or went to Chala Junior went to space and became the next Black Panther with space powers like it kind of feels like by introducing a Multiverse and trying to maintain shared universes within each of them that's like a cluster waiting to happen as far as like your casual fan what do you think well I mean people understand the X-Men timelines separate from the MCU but they've started bringing that in to it um I mean look at how many timelines they're bringing in they've got all the the Spider-Man the Sam Raimi ones uh Andrew garfields are now connected to the I mean you've got three Spider-Man in a movie so you know people can get their heads around they're being stuff um and the X-Men as well yeah that's another perfect example that has basically been adopted by the MCU now and it's just classed as another Universe rather than being and people my grandma she hasn't seen any of the original Spider-Man movies she loves the MCU watch no way home didn't have a problem with it so I think you know having the Multiverse as a device you can just understand that these are separate versions and if you like that version then go and watch that one um but this this connectivity is gonna make the hardcore fans really be like well I have to see everything else whereas I think that the biggest off-putting thing thing for the MCU is the fact that there's so much homework to do um which people might not want to do but if they integrate the these ideas into the movies where it's like you don't have to do your homework you're still going to enjoy the film it's going to be welcoming to General audiences but hardcore fans can be like well I know everything about The Amazing Spider-Man universe you know you know what I mean it's like it's all coming together and if you want to explore different things that that's the best way to go about it and you know we think you both touched on it and I talked about it earlier you don't want people to feel like they're doing homework but you also don't want to pay piss off your fans like the reason people go see these movies the reason people turned out to see Captain Marvel for example was because they felt like they had to see it to understand how Thanos is going to be beaten in Avengers end game no offense to the movie Captain Marvel but that post-credits scene really drove traffic to that movie so are we going to piss off the fans like by saying oh no no that continuity don't worry about that or is there a way to like maintain that link Paul what do you think um I think there is yeah it would just have to I mean even things like She-Hulk don't massively feel like they're relying on the MCU they obviously have their moments but you could probably get away with removing certain connections and it being completely fine um but you know you never know Secret Wars Kevin feige might announce that he's retiring and Disney might do the right thing and be like we're just gonna this is the end of the MCU we've told the complete story um we're turning down the money we're not gonna milk it this is a complete thing give us 10 years and we'll be back with more Marvel movies so Park admission is now free uh for disadvantaged children and yeah of course they would definitely do that yeah so I mean it I think the MCU really rests on Kevin feige's shoulders and like you said before if he leaves then who is going to take over that I mean who's got who's worked on all of the films to the point where they're gonna have the know-how uh and the knowledge of you know how this all ties together as one seamless thing and so they might even just end it go look people are getting comic book fatigue we don't want to completely kill this give us it's ending with Kevin feige in secret Wars give us 10 years and we'll come back completely rebooted from the off and not ruin it by just making thousands and thousands more movies I don't know I think you're for I think that the idea of Wolverine and Spider-Man being in a movie together will be enough for people like you're not even they're barely touching mutants in this Saga so I I don't think that'll happen like a mutation you both mentioned this I talked a little bit about it but the overcrowding phase four 51 hours of programming more than the first three phases combined too much of a good thing uh is it diluting the water to is it diluting the quality too much Colton what do you think how should they address the overcrowding going forward what more specifically like I know we you can bring up the things I said like they're turning armor Wars into a movie and they're going to do special presentations but what specifically do you think like maybe could have been a special presentation or should have been a movie or should they have just scrapped all together what do you think it's extremely overcrowded and it it takes away like the intimacy I was mentioning and I think a way to do away with that is either one you either have to cut back on the characters but I I don't think they're going to do that you don't introduce all these characters with the plan of oh and then we're going to get rid of them all in three four five years I really do think that in that interview I think it was with MTV when he mentioned the different Lanes of Marvel I really do think that's his plan to maybe have somebody that he is preparing like maybe three different people for each lane of the MCU to take those stories and run with them in their cohesive you know sections you know maybe not mixing Spider-Man with the Mystic Arts part of the MCU have your mystical characters have your street level characters have your Cosmic characters and maybe have three people that he's been preparing over the years producers that have been working by his side getting them ready for those paths and they can focus just on those individual lanes and I really think that's the direction they're probably going to go because I don't see them cutting back on the number of characters I mean after you've just introduced them all I don't know why you would then cut back on the number well one thing there about cutting back characters they they can cut back shows but keep the characters she Hawk can appear as a supporting character in a different movie or vice versa you know somebody else can team up a she-hawk part of the fun of Thor Ragnarok was just getting to see Bruce Banner not even Hulk but Bruce Banner and Thor so that kind of Buddy Dynamic might instead of having human Supporting Cast members it might just be here are supporting cast members and you you brought up twice now to think about Marvel going into different Lanes which is exciting because I want to see more things like werewolf by night it also does sound really familiar to the 1990s when Marvel very much formalized this in their comics and they were like no no we've got like six Spider-Man titles like nine X-Men titles there were Hawk titles and they overcrowded the shells of comic books created comic book fatigue and completely devalued their product along with things like the clone saga and the whole like superheroes being revamped fatigue to hit fans it almost blew up the whole industry um I hope that doesn't happen because I love these movies and I I don't want to see people wear out on them uh Paul what about you what do you think how how would you address how do you think they should address the overcrowding just go back to what worked I mean phase one worked phase two's worked phase three worked it was just all movies um maybe the odd special presentation but I just don't think the Disney Plus shows are written to a high enough standard where they're good they're fine they're serviceable but they're not I mean outside of Loki none of them had any impact and that's what they were sold as they were sold as being these movies that you had to see in basically it was so this being a movie cut up in the six parts um that you had to see in order to get anything outside of Loki I don't feel like anything's necessary maybe Captain America in the winter sorry Falcon in the Winter Soldier um maybe one division but the the later shows especially it's just kind of introducing a character having them go through the motions and then introducing a mediocre villain fighting them and that's it um but none of that really matters if every project is super good quality and I think when we start to talk about superhero fatigue or overcrowding it really just boils down too is this as good as what came before like I think Thor 11 Thunder is a little under I think people are too hard on it but it's definitely not the movie Ragnarok was uh neither is wakanda for it wakanda forever is not the movie The Black Panther was but for different reasons um you know we'll see where Guardians 3 and some of these other movies take us but like some of these projects I feel like they could have made a kick-ass She-Hulk movie you know a really Kick-Ass Seahawk special and I can't get past the visual effects and how they were so obviously rushed and not ready for that budget and everything like even how they introduced skull I mean in episode one when they teased the sicarian ship you're thinking like oh how oh World War hulks come in uh they're gonna introduce scar it's going to be crazy and then the reveal was Hulk standing there at a barbecue going this is my son and then he walks out you know I mean it just feels like they're not they're kind of resting on their Laurels a bit and be like well we we can do what we want now we don't have to put we're not fighting it out with our c-list characters um like they were in phase one uh and even phase two like things like Guardians of the Galaxy I mean when you heard that was being made it was kind of like what the hell are you doing making the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and it just kind of feels like they've hit a point now where they're like well the audience will come if we film it they will come um and I think phase four has been the Shaker that they've needed almost because there are reports that they are going to focus on quantity over quality over quantity now and you know maybe this was just the the misstep that they needed I mean we make videos and sometimes you you just hit home run after home run and it's like uh anything I put out people are going to watch and then you'll hit a low period it's like you know what I need a step back think about what I'm doing focus on maybe more of a strategy to this and then uh and then you you build it back up you know what I mean I love how this Marvel video totally became about heavy spoilers that's where you're at right now and sometimes you know when you're making movies you think I should just spend more time with my twins I should really make better
