Martin Keown Reacts To Jens Lehmann Buying Arsenal's 'The Invincibles' Branding Rights

Martin of course as I often refer to him and and why wouldn't I because he is one an invincible that's what he is limited um he he went an entire season with the rest of the boys at Arsenal and they never lost a match hence Arsenal Legend yes arsal Invincible yes but there's a story running Martin about Yen Layman um and I noticed a headline I think it might have been the mail online exclusive Arsenal Legends Invincible cash GR how one of their former Stars snapped up the trademark to their greatest ever season from under the club's nose so what is this tell us it tells us that the goalkeeper Yen Layman has taken out a patent on the name invincibles um and this is in Readiness it's being reported for the 20-year anniversary of the invincibles which is coming up it it's our understanding here and I think it's your understanding Martin that the club the club has indeed known about this for some time and that you the players have known about it so can you put some meat in the bones here Martin what has Layman done specifically and is there anything under hand in it no not at all it's a very very open I think Y what Yen has done is taken out a patent on the name the invincibles and um what he's done is he's shared that with all the players and all the staff set up a companies that so everybody um would benefit if there was anything to be benefited from if the what they're looking to do was to do like a documentary so they were negotiating with with broadcasters there was an opportunity to to do a game that the club had offered a date but it was clashing with UNICEF children in need on the 9th of of June which is a major event that they didn't want to go up against so in the fullness of time there' be a game and and then of course um there'll probably be um a link with the charity and there'd be opportunities for I suppose for the ininal group to have a say so he Invincible he's he's taken out a trademark on it really yeah and and he but it's not for himself he's done it for the whole group it's with with your approval yeah but we've we've been in there's been a group uh everybody's been in that group the WhatsApp group of 40 people um it you know members of Staff lots of people played their part gimm and this incredible success I wouldn't put a negative on this I think it's about unity and the club are completely in in tandem with this um and we look to to try to do things going forward for charity and Link with the club uh with a game gym we hope to have in this in the next season it won't be to do it now cuz we weren't we didn't have really sufficient time we didn't have enough dates but that's something we're looking to do and a documentary of some sort they're negotiating with broadcasters right now so no it's it's it's for me it's a positive I don't know how it's been written I haven't read it um but there is no divide between us the former players and the football club is very it's completely opposite in fact we've all been invited to the last game of the season the invincibles will be on the pitch and I hope to be there with a new premier league uh success for the current team this is all we want the former generation and does it of Aron's backing as well is he thly behind it yeah 100% arson knows he's aware of it he's a part of that group as of all the staff members so um yeah yen is not taking this for himself and running off with a you know a brand name he's uh he's just making sure it's protected going forward so when I call you arsel invincible at every given moment on the show does talk sport have to pay Martin you can do that free a charge Jim I mean what what what you reading this into this as as as Yen Layman seeing a business opportunity that maybe with all due respect Martin some of the other invincibles didn't see um and he's gone on the front well what he's seen I suspect is other people taking advantage of it and monetizing it um Without Really the right to do so so he's just added some commercial sense I'm surprised the club didn't want to do it from the first instance to ring fence this because ultimately people are utilizing the terminology Invincible in conjunction with Arsenal that group of players that achieve that outcome and they're utilizing it to make money from so the intellectual property rights around that terminology have just been repositioned with the real owners of it those that that those that were the Achievers the club and the players yeah and that ultimately what happens to the money well that's a different discussion that that will find itself through in the in the passage of time if it's been distributed into charity and to the people that were were the people that were behind it then I don't really see what the issue would be and Martin's explained it this isn't a land grab from Jan Layman this this is a ring fencing and protecting of intellectual property that doesn't belong to people that are utilizing it for their own end how many games did you go on beaten Martin 49 games 49 I mean you more than most must take a step back and look at Jai Alonzo's bar lusin and think yep I remember that I mean they won last night in Rome against Roma 2-0 to stretch their unbeaten run in all competition to 47 games they're now one game away from leveling benfica's record of 48 unbeaten in all competition between December 1963 and February 1965 what has Alonzo how's he managed to do this incredible isn't it I mean venger did it with you how's he done this it's a special group of players Jim that you need you need people that are driven you focused um you know the in the end you what Aon benger did was created an environment where where everybody's themselves everybody stands up everybody makes makes the call at the right time and it's like you're you're in the moment got to take what's what's in front of you and that group was able to do that that group probably know um soers Itself by winning by saying look it went on beaten for a whole season there's no trophy for that they made won in the end yeah but really they should have won the treble that year which there's no doubt the FA Cup the the Champions League in one week we went out but we showed enough resolve we were behind in a game against Liverpool yeah but the team battled back because they were special individuals and what's nice you know I know we're talking now about this um the patent of this name yeah yeah we're we're just a few weeks away now aren't we from those TW it's 20 years ago it's really hard to believe and you never quite know when you're going to meet these guys again that's why it was so nice for me this week to see arson Wenger was right at the he's particularly proud of this but it all came out Jim of many years of of building a brand of football uh building a brand of person it's a collective and I think Arsenal are on the right road again now it's really you for granite Jack incidentally yesus I am because have been one time the victim of you know a bit of a bit of verbal from Arsenal fans here he is over at lusen doing what you did yeah and he couldn't achieve it at the in an Arsenal sht he very nearly did his last couple of Seasons his last season probably his best season so now he's he's he's implementing all of those things he's learned and he's taking the opportunities he already won the bundes league an amazing achievement but he wants to keep going it's a Jim is I just want the success for this group now to experience you know and as I say I don't see this as a negative story I think I think Yen has done this for the group he's done it for the people the uh the masser the Kitman the people who didn't really earn the monies but I like what Liverpool have done I like what they that game was span and they do a community match and they're sort of the Pioneers in this and I'd like Arsenal really to follow that in some capacity going forward invincibles quite quite a moniker isn't
