and crafts of mindanao at the end of our lesson learners are expected to analyze the elements and principles of arts in the production of arts and crafts inspired by the different creative expressions in mindanao also you are expected to identify the different characteristics of hearts and traps in specific areas in mindanao appreciate the artifacts and arts in terms of its functions and their distinct use of art elements and principles and last create products that can be assembled with local materials guided by traditional techniques ok let's start mindanao is referred to as the land of promise it is the second largest island after luzon in the philippines located at the southernmost island in the philippine archipelago it produced a unique filipino artistic tradition as a result of animism and islamic religion used together attires textiles and tapes trees in this lesson you will better understand how lines shapes forms value color texture and space give more meaning and significance on artwork this will help you understand the processes in art and its impact to you as an individual you will also learn how animism and islamic religion use together and produce a uniquely filipino artistic tradition you are invited to explore the arts of people of mindanao traditional clothing of the bilal the bilaan is an ethno-linguistic group that inhabits some parts of south cotabato north cotabato and davao del sur bilaaan is a combination of two words bila that means house and and that means people they are known for embroidery brass ornaments and beadwork that are integrated in their traditional clothing the bella and wear clothes woven from abaka embellished with embroidery buttons and beads the women wear heavy brass belts with numerous tiny belts that hang around their waistline belt produces pleasing chiming sounds when they move they also cut mother of pearls into small shapes that look like sequins called dak moon to form geometric patterns the process of dying fabric from bila and pagobos and ibulis with the yarns are tightly wrapped with the strings and die before weaving is called milan textiles usually contains three colors shades of black or brown red or darker shades of orange a crew or color of undyed aside from the traditional clothing of the milan we also have the traditional clothing of the bagobo and the tibulee the bagobos inhabiting highland areas in southwestern mindanao the tiboli who live in and around lake cebu south cotabato are famous for their complicated beadwork wonderful woven fabrics and beautiful brass ornaments similar to the bagoboz they regard the tinala as sacred traditional wedding rituals involve the exchange of this textile the webers believe that their god and ancestors visit them and their mallon the ma long is a traditional filipina chubby skirt that is made of hand woven or machine-made multi-colored cotton cloth bearing a variety of geometric or floral designs it can be used in many ways women wear it as a skirt a dress a blouse or a gown depending on how it is folded it can also be used as a hammock a basket sleeping bag a bathrobe or a baby carriage the ma long is similar to the sarong war and the people in malaysia brunei and indonesia but unlike the sarong the ma long is longer and is stitched together at both ends to make a chew a traditional dance called kapamalong or groups of mindanao ambila an bagobo now let's move on to the crafts accessories and body ornaments from mindanao first is sarimano the sari manok is a legendary bird of maranao it comes from the word sari meaning cloth or garment and manok for chicken it has become a significant symbol of marine award it is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail holding a fish on its beak or talons the head is profusely decorated with a scroll leaf and spiral motives it is said to be a symbol of good fortune next is appear aqui refers to the traditional and unique carving and prominent design among the more communities the name comes from an old malayan word which means hard or ukip and filipino it refers to us appear in maranao while uphill in madindanawan a new pattern now known as the akir motif has evolved from the indian stylized bird light and naga themes and the islamic tradition of using flowing flowers vines and geometric patterns as well as local artisan styles we also have makeup and body ornaments as well as the wedding attires of a distinct form of visual art of the yakan is the facial makeup applied on the brides and the grooms after applying a foundation of white powder dots and lines are painted in various patterns on the faces creating the effect of formal and elaborate mask which match the ornate costumes of the couple the bride and the groom wear different accessories for male the peace and candide peace and candide is a hand woven head cloth and 15 meter belt or sash which serves as their protection from spears or knives for female we have short skirt over trousers and for both we have the saru a hot worm to add elegance we also have two different ornaments used by the yahans the maniteguillas and manixemboulan manitoba ghias is a necklace or bracelet of beads from dried fruit seeds to protect them from illness while manixemboulin is a necklace or bracelet made of bamboo stems cut into short pieces and it serves as additional let's move on to the table accessories first is called the helot elote is a heavy brass belt worn by women during festivals the tabling ability wear it with bracelets and anklets furnished with ball bearings that make a sound as the wearer walks the bells that are hung form the distinctive brass or beaded belt signal the approach of a women next is what remotes it is a wooden comb with a collared glass beads hanging from it or in towards the back of the head and last but not the least is the mindanao's very own brass making and the most famous instrument made of brass is the olinta linta is a
