the time has come i'm late to every trend ever but i guess that doesn't really matter when you're already uncool hello and welcome to my channel my name is mira scarlett and today i'm going to show you how i created a fall version of the viral strawberry dress designed by lyrica matoshi i decided that i wanted to do like a fall kind of autumn version of the strawberry dress not because i don't think the original strawberry dress is isn't anything uh short of amazing but it's not really my personal aesthetic it's not really my style the strawberry dress in my opinion it just seems like a more like spring kind of summery dress um so i wanted to make an attempt at making something more that i would wear in like a color palette that i like also um fall is my absolute favorite season and my favorite weather it's my favorite time of the year and i just wanted to uh dedicate a project to uh my favorite season i got the idea to make a different version of the strawberry dress from rachel maxie who is a very fun youtuber who is as hilarious as she is talented and a while back she made a halloween version of the strawberry dress i also wanted to give a huge shout out to madison macquarie she tackled diy in the strawberry dress a while ago and she also uploaded a video showing her whole process and it was extremely helpful for me and understanding how to construct the dress for my own version i would have struggled a lot more with this project if i didn't have her video to reference to be honest so huge shout out to all these creative people that helped inspire this project and without further ado let me show you how i made my fall autumn version of the iconic strawberry dress i sketched up my idea in procreate and acquired all the materials i needed to make the outfit from joanne i obtained about 4 yards of cheap orange polyester satin an invisible zipper 5 yards of red tulle and 3 different colors of glittery iron-on vinyl i used the simple mccall's dress pattern because i didn't feel like taking the time to draft my own and make a mock-up since i was in a bit of a rush to get this done i cut all the pieces out as directed but i do plan to alter the sleeves and the necklines of the front and the back bodice pieces [Music] i cut out all of the pieces using the orange fabric which will act as the base of the dress since i didn't have enough tool or patience to make the entire thing from layers upon layers of tulle i used the front bodice piece that had the v-neck line as a template for how much to plunge the neckline for the back [Music] for the sleeve i shortened it to where i wanted it to lay and then extended the sides by about two to three inches so later when i gather the top and bottom of the sleeve it will create a nice rounded poof i also plan to add pockets to this now that all my main pieces were cut out i quickly pinned the bodice together to see how the fit was it wasn't great considering the pattern i'm using is for knits and i'm using a non-stretch satin fabric uh yeah but i decided to just cut the neckline plunge down a bit more in the front and leave the rest as is i pinned it up and basted the bodice together this looked more like what i was aiming for but i was still a little bit worried about the fit oh well moving on i grabbed my red tool and cut my bodice pieces out of it the tool is going to act as an overlay for the dress and help cut down the intensity of that orange satin especially with the addition of the darker red tool that i ended up grabbing later so that i could achieve the fall color that i was going for i repeated the same thing for the sleeves once i cut out all the bodice and sleeve pieces from both shades of red tulle i tested and played around with how i wanted them layered and settled with the dark red tool sandwiched between the satin and the brighter red tool on top now i needed to create the gathered layer for the front of the bodice i did this by using what i thought was the front bodice pattern turns out it was the back but i fixed it later anyway the concept is the same take that bodice piece and extend it by 10 inches or more from the center ignoring the neckline cutout leave the armhole in the side untouched so it will line up with our bodice when we arrange it on top later see right here is where i made the realization that i was using the back bodice pattern and not the front like i was supposed to i was quite mad so i just adjusted it for the front piece no biggie i grabbed my bright red tool again and cut this piece out and set it aside since i'm working with multiple slippery layers i pinned them together for now and plan to baste them later next i went ahead and cut out the tulle skirt overlay which is just two 54 by 30 inch rectangles cut from each color of red tool in order to create two skirt layers that will go on top of the circle skirt later i set it aside for now because before moving on i needed to add the glitter leaves to my top tool layers i created a leaf cut file using brother canvas workspace on my computer and then transferred it over to my scan and cut machine i cut the glitter vinyl down to a 12 by 12 inch square to fit onto the sticky mat put it in the machine and let the scanning cut do all the work once all the leaves were cut i removed it from the machine removed the excess vinyl and was left with just the sparkly leaves and the clear protective liner i continued doing these same steps with my other colors of glittery heat transfer vinyl until i had what i assumed was enough for the project [Music] i then cut out all the leaves individually so that i can place them exactly where i want them on my tool [Music] protect your ironing board with a piece of parchment paper while ironing on the vinyl transfers i made the mistake of using a scrap piece of fabric first and that was not fun to deal with at all i'm going to be adding these leaves to the bright red tool layer for the bodice sleeves and outer tulle skirt layer for each piece i arranged the transfers where i wanted them to create a pattern then i pressed each one individually for 20 seconds with my iron on the wool setting and the steam turned off i'm honestly really surprised it didn't burn my tool but i'm really happy about that too once everything is cooled off you should now be able to remove the clear protective lining [Music] look at how pretty that is here's how the bodice pieces look with the leaves added [Music] now that all of these pieces have the leaf overlay i can baste all three layers together around the edges to keep everything from slipping around [Music] and there's the bodice pieces so far happily basted together [Music] i ended up wanting a lining for the bodice with sewn in booby cups since i was going to attempt to wear the dress braless which seems to be the norm when folks adorn the strawberry dress it's also really one of the few options you have for a dress with such a plunging neckline i used a stretchy performance fabric cut out the bodice pieces from it and sewed them up [Music] i then tried it on and put the foam cup inserts where i needed them pinned it into place and took it to my machine where i sewed around them with a zig zag stitch next i return to my tool overlay skirt pieces remember the 54 by 30 inch rectangles i previously cut two pieces from both the red and the dark red tool and now i'm pinning the two dark red tool layers together along one of the 30 inch sides and sewing them up to finish this dark red layer i did two rows of gathering stitches along the top and gathered the skirt by hand until the waist matched my measurements [Music] here's a quick look at it on my dress form don't worry i'll be adding the base circle skirt layer cut from the orange satin in a bit i then did the same thing for the bright red tool sewed up one side but i didn't gather this one yet because first i had to add on the leaf transfers to this big old piece that's going to be on the outside since it was hard to make sure the pattern was consistent on this large piece which now measures 107 inches by 30 inches after sewing it together on my tiny ironing board i instead spread it out over my sewing table using several yards of fleece folded in half to absorb the heat from the iron i pressed each one down and now the most complicated piece to cover in leaves was complete this took quite a while but i'm happy with how it turned out now it's time to gather it up just like the previous dark red layer you can use an overlock machine or a ruffling foot but for more control definitely use the hand gathering here's the skirt so far with the two tulle layers now let's make it not see-through anymore i grabbed the circle skirt i cut out earlier from the pattern and serged up the edges then pinned the sides and sewed the two pieces together [Music] afterwards i hemmed the bottom by turning it up by about one half of an inch [Music] then i sewed up the sides of both the tool skirt layers [Music] once all the skirt layers were sewn at the sides i put them in the correct order matching side seams and then pinned all layers together at the waistband adjusting the gathers as i went to make sure everything fit together nicely [Music] [Music] i sew it along the waist to secure all the layers the skirt will be sewn to the bodice later but for now i have to actually finish the bodice [Music] going back to it i start adorning the glittery leaf transfers onto my extended bodice front piece the same way i did with the other pieces then i did a gathering stitch at the top and the bottom i fit the gathered pieces to the front bodice pieces matching up the armhole edges and adjusting the gathers to fit at the shoulders and bottom once satisfied i pinned all the way around and got ready to baste this new layer into place [Music] now all the bodice pieces are complete i assembled them right sides together and sewed them up at the shoulders and sides [Music] now let us return to the sleeves i added the glitter leaves the same way i did previously for the bodice and skirt pieces then layered them up on top of the dark tool in orange satin and finally baste it around just like we have done many times already except this time my bobbin finally ran out of thread ah it's always an inconvenience i pressed down the edges of the sleeves by about one half of an inch and took it to my machine to him but it was then that i also realized that i can't move on with the sleeves until i make my ruffles which are also needed on the neckline of the bodice so that's where i am now cutting out a bunch of three inch wide strips of tulle i didn't count or keep track of how many i ended up using because i just really hate math the bottom of the skirt also needed ruffles but needed bigger longer ones so for those i cut out several eight inch wide strips i took all the strips to my machine and sewed them together for the three inch wide strips i folded them in half and ironed them down then took it to my machine where i sewed yet another gathering stitch along the unfolded edge i wish i had used a ruffle foot for this part honestly but i'm also happy with how the controlled hand gathers turned out time to confuse you with my constant skipping around back to the sleeves i really didn't know what the heck i was doing at this point so i hemmed the bottom of the sleeves and left a channel for some elastic since i didn't know where to put the ruffles without messing up the channel i just pinned them to the back so that the edges of the ruffles poked out enough but also didn't interfere with the elastic channel i had created i then sewed along the same stitch line where i had hemmed it [Music] using my bodkin tool i attached it to the end of the elastic and fed that through the channel i had created in the sleeve so that it would gather the bottom part of the sleeve and also fit comfortably around my arms then i remembered to add the gathering stitches at the top of the sleeve and gathered that until it was the same measurement as my armhole then i sewed up the sides thus completing the sleeve i'm sorry if that was an all over the place explanation but i barely know what was going on and it was just very out of order but um there's the sleeve whoa then i added the ruffles all around the neckline of the bodice and basted them in place with my machine now i can add the bodice lining that we worked on earlier with right sides together i sewed the lining onto the front and back of the bodice sewing along the neckline where we just added the ruffles it is really starting to come together i did a bit of top stitching along the neckline ruffles so that they would lay a bit nicer and also secure the lining so it wouldn't shift back to more gathering this time for the eight inch wide ruffles luckily this was the last bout of gathering needed thank goodness once done i added the large ruffles to only the outer tool skirt layer now i can finally sew the bodice to the skirt since i was kind of in a hurry and may have been up until 7am finishing the dress before my shoot that day i didn't film installing the zipper the pockets or the waist ties but here's the full reveal [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you guys so so much for watching i really hope that you enjoyed the reveal but more than that i hope that you enjoyed the construction process of this dress and this video was helpful informative and maybe inspired you to make a sewing project or a dress or just something creative and fun i'm very happy with how the dress turned out even though there are a lot of changes i would like to make like the skirt length the sleeve length and also the fact that i had the neckline so plunging that i had to wear a tank top for modesty despite all that i'm still very happy with how everything came out and i'm honestly proud of uh getting this project done in about a week i really hope that you guys enjoyed the process and again i just wanted to give a shout out to the designer of the strawberry dress which is lyrica matoshi another shout out to youtubers madison macquarie and to rachel maxie and thank you guys so so much for tuning in to my video if you're interested in more sewing or cosplay related type content definitely subscribe so
