pockets obviously volume obviously hello welcome to my channel my name is  wendy and here i'm just documenting my   sewing journey to show you how you can make  your own clothes we're coming up on the end of   the year and i felt like this would be a great  opportunity to roast and toast everything that   i've made this year so i'm gonna start with  the easy stuff that i made or like i guess   it's subjective it's what i think was easy  let me grab all my items there's a lot and   this video is also sponsored by squarespace i'm  all about empowering you to make your own clothes   and they are all about empowering you to set  up your own website launch that passion project   i've been using squarespace for many many years so  i'm super excited about this sponsor now sit back   and enjoy your virtual shopping experience of  which diy of mine would you like to attempt okay i might have been a bit overzealous  with the iron but all right let's start   first up it's this bucket hat and then i  purposefully put on my insanely coordinated lime   green thrifted coat so this came from a thrifted  blanket and it's a bit more of a roast than a   toast even though i'm putting it in the easy  category for a bucket hack there's like no flare   whatsoever but i do really like that  it's cute and green and fuzzy and so   i think if i just have some time to like shrink  the top a little could be greatly improved the   last thing i'll say about it is that i wish i also  had put a lining on the inside another reason i   don't wear it very often is it literally leaves  little green fluff lints in my hair every time   i wear it this year i tried tie-dye for the  first time and this is one of my very first   projects so i was actually super proud with how  it came out this used to be a baby pink shirt and   the split tie dye kind of gave one half a more  orange vibe and one half a more fuchsia vibe   the other tie-dye project that i was super proud  of was this one my first attempt at a swirl and   she's swirling so this is a toast to tie dye the  third easy project that i love this year is still   tapestry weaving i think we've covered a lot of  tapestry weaving content on my channel and it's   still one of my favorite hoppies to just chill out  you can even use leftover fabric to add all sorts   of interesting textures this one has been all of  2020 still attached to the loom so hopefully i   actually get around to hanging it up at some  point she's done she just hasn't grown up and   left the nest yet if you're looking for  a hobby to try in 2021 highly recommend   tapestry weaving also thank you to everyone  who keeps tagging me on instagram with their   weaves i really really love seeing them this would  not be a 2020 sewing recap video without obviously   face masks if you want to up your mask game there  are two videos on my channel for this one of them   goes through some hospital cdc approved fabric  mask styles and there's a second video where i   venture into some more creative looks and show  you how you could take a standard mask pattern   and modify it a bit so it fits the contour of  your face a lot better i have to put masks in   the easy category because you can just follow a  pattern to do it i even have my pattern linked   in case you want to take a gamble on our faces  being similar actually i just remembered there's   a third video that dealt with masks this  year i made this gucci bedazzled tulle mask   as seen on billy eilish for the grammy's red  carpet this video was made on the cusp of when   masks and coronavirus was growing as a topic so  now this mask feels like weirdly ominous to me   and obviously this does not serve any protective  purpose whatsoever is just it's just billy eilish   back in simpler times if you're feeling ready to  venture into thrift flips this year's easy project   was this one shoulder top from a t-shirt this is  a t-shirt thrift flip that i felt particularly   happy with i even threw in some fun details  like this shiring in the back and i love the   one shoulder it just makes it look super sleek  all you need for this is just an old t-shirt and   some elastic you obviously don't need to have  as much as me but this was my pre coronavirus   bulk buy to get me through a year of sewing i  think those were some of the easiest tutorials i   attempted this year some of you might find medium  stuff relatively easy as well it's just that some   medium stuff i put in medium because it's a grind  the technique is simple you just have to sit there   for hours but before we get to that a quick word  about our sponsor if any of you have ever popped   open the description of one of my videos you  know that i try to put a lot of supportive   links and resources there many of them go to my  website which is this video sponsor squarespace   if you ever need a place to build your website  whether you're just getting started or an   established brand squarespace is an amazing  choice for how you want to do your business   you can sell your products and services you can  share your portfolio you can let people book   appointments with you online all of that can be  done on squarespace and more and it's really easy   to use and it looks professional and that's why i  love it on this one blog post alone as an example   you can see how it's easy to upload images add  links import youtube videos it can pull in my   instagram posts if you're picky about your images  you can choose the center point so no matter how   squarespace handles the image scaling it'll look  good on desktop or on mobile and if you're new to   website layouts squarespace has professional  portfolio designs where you just drop in the   images and the galleries as you want and if  there's anything that you need to keep a secret   squarespace lets you add password protected pages  so you can just send the link and little password   to your clients in my case i use it actually to  host a secret page on my website called darlings   which is an exclusive community you need the  password and then you can get in and get bonus   content they really want you to feel confident  about building your website you can email their   support anytime 24 hours a day seven days a week  all of their customer care are actual employees   who work in their office and you will always hear  back within one hour if you want to give it a   try head to squarespace.com for a free trial and  when you're ready to launch go to squarespace.com   with wendy to get 10 off your first  purchase of a website or domain thank   you squarespace for sponsoring this video making  my website easy now onto the medium difficulty   all right there was a video this year  where i tackled some viral diys and so   this one is the exposed stitching i particularly  got my inspiration from ruar carlotta   this used to be a t-shirt which i hacked off the  sleeves to make into a cheap looking tank top   and then i did all this fanciness to try  to reinvigorate its lifespan if you've been   poking around on instagram you probably have  seen dimda with all his faux prada creations   so obviously i had to give it a try and i  made my little sponge purse i will admit this   doesn't get a ton of outdoor wear and there  were a lot of really funny comments talking   about how it would be a disaster in a rainstorm  definitely a toast to those two projects from the   viral diys video and this last one was the core  set made out of a pair of old adidas shoes that   i have thrifted this one i made was inspired by  frisk me good but there's also paulina russo if   you want to see even more shoe up cycle ideas i  feel very torn if this one counts as a roast or   a toast this year the hip pads definitely sent it  over the deep end in terms of just being really   extra and now i feel like realistically for me i  would wear this if i had to perform on stage or   be in like a wrestling match now regarding  projects that are easy but just a total grind this   rug definitely qualifies this used to be an ikea  rug with these striped yarns i tore them all out   and then did a crazy latch hook job and now it's  our happy entryway rug some people commented that   this looked like a dandelion and i'll take it this  one i made in the early summer and i loved it so   much that i wore it for my birthday to feel  special there were so many details i was really   proud of in this project like doing the scalloped  hem that's got these rainbow shapes and a cute   little mock turtleneck if you know your designers  hopefully you've already guessed that this is a   cecily bonson inspired dress and i'm just so happy  i made it i feel really special in it continuing   on and feeling fun and flirty and fancy nothing  quite tops these gloves that i made this year   this video was all about showing you how to make  the gloves and how because you get to choose   the color you can make it match whatever outfit  you've got it with i borrowed these super pretty   dresses and got to make this pink in the matching  fabric and my teeny tiny lizzo valentino purse   were the fanciest of the 2020 tutorials okay  this was the medium difficulty project that i   had the most problems with this year these track  pants were inspired by design by 99 percentis and   i thought i'd be so witty by combining two pairs  of pants into one giant leg so that i have enough   fabric to ruche it all up and create that gathered  drawstring effect i went to my hip-hop class and   i realized that by making these out of snow pant  material i basically had absolutely no way for   my legs to breathe so these are very temperature  confusing pants that i've made i wanted to record   all of this in one go but wow do i ever hate  daylight savings back to the brightness of   day this is the louis vuitton inspired harness i  made earlier this year everything about it makes   me feel like i'm about to perform a heist which is  very fun and i even incorporated a little pocket   just large enough for your phone this one's  kind of like medium slash hard because it's   a lot of fine detail work it basically is a  war of attrition between you and the beating   who will win this blue vest plus a whole  bunch of other blue theme diys was part of a   billy eilish video i made two of her i guess at  that time kind of more signature looks many of   my projects this year were greatly assisted  by julia and she's my assistant who made it   possible for me to make this many swing projects  in a year because it's just truly like i can't   sew fast enough as one person if you make this  definitely add pockets maybe stay away from blue   because part way through i kind of looked like  a walmart employee the other half of the billy   eilish video was making these gloves to kind of  imitate her oscars after party look she had crazy   long nails and so i purposefully had these gloves  cut so that the fingers could be exposed with the   added benefit that now this time the gloves  are touch screen friendly this brings us to   the cowl neck dresses i made two of these in total  yes this is the exact fabric that i used to make   this dress the calamax video is actually one of my  more popular videos this year so i'm super happy   you guys enjoyed me tackling how to do the cowl  neck this one was using pattern drafting method   and this one was a draping method using my dress  form i think my dress form is actually maybe a   little bit skinnier than me this one is a snug fit  my favorite part about this one is the dual chrome   obviously if you've ever wanted to give cowl  neckline a try hopefully this video will help   you out i've seen a lot of pictures tagged of  it being just done as tank tops if you're not   ready to go for the full dress do what you will  the last of my tutorials that i feel like can   fit in the medium category was this thrift flip  video where i took a long cardigan and i shortened   it and then took all that excess fabric and made  it into a cute little tank top this is very much   inspired by that like katie holmes look of her  and her cashmere bra and cardigan and the other   thrift flip that came with the cardigan was this  skirt used to be just a regular little leopard   mini midi used to be just a little regular  pencil skirt and now it's got like a fun   corset detail this year i felt like there was  so much pressure and i don't know if i just put   it on myself to put like multiple thrift flips  in one video instead of just doing one project   so hopefully you appreciated that they came in  pairs in some case triples one yeah and quadruples okay this is where just like way more details  came into the picture but we're kicking off this   section with the dion lee inspired corset i don't  know if you could tell from the video of this but   i was actually really discouraged when i was first  finished this but over time it's grown on me i'm   happy with how this little stomacher turned out a  little accent zipper gives it a tougher character   and yeah i ended up wearing it a lot this summer  you can really see the corset theme come through   when i pair it with this skirt and this one  pushed my fashion comfort zone i will say the leg   slits are quite daring but i do feel some kind of  weight in it and if you decide to do this i feel   like honestly the hardest part is just getting  the front to lie flat the key to that is just   keep trying i bring you another one inspired  by a powerhouse female recording artist my   color choice definitely veered closer to the  lyrica matoshi look that jenny wore in ice cream   but the real inspiration for this was  beyonce in black is king shoulders can go up   can be off shoulder is a fluffy loofah wherever  you go in principle this one's not technically   hard but it's just a grind it's a lot of organza  the black is king video also inspired me to try   making a jacket this is nowhere near as fierce as  the dress that originally inspired this but i was   just trying to follow elements of the silhouette  but i do love how it's got like a sculpted bodice   little bit of like a low v in the front and then  like big statement sleeves so became kind of like   beyonce meets folklore meets little woman okay  i might have gained a little bit of weight since   i made this and it's apparent because this was  made in a challenge to try to draft the perfect   fit for myself near the latter half of  the year especially with julia's help too   my pattern drafting abilities felt like they just  like broke through a new layer the thing about   this top is that it looks simple but it's actually  pretty challenging because there's so many curves   for sure a year ago i would not have been able to  make this i wish i could remake my wedding dress   because of what i've learned now so yay and it  wouldn't be 2020 without mentioning the strawberry   dress or in my case i made a strawberry skirt and  a strawberry top i added these little hook and eye   closures on the side so they could like really  hitch together and look like one finished piece   to speak from the heart this was the tutorial  that i was hounded on for the most this year   so i made it but now i wish i had put in like  even more innovation and variation i feel like   i accomplished the goal of being very on point  with the original lyrica mitoshi design but i   don't know i'm going to try to innovate a lot  more in the new year for you guys i will say   though it is truly a magical feeling to wear it  and kudos to lyrica mutoshi for tapping into that   bras broth i followed a kit from emerald aaron  to make this black lace bra as well as this   more skin toned bra it fits actually even  better than it looks and it's just because   i'm wearing a bra and a bodysuit and then this  bra on top in order to not get demonetized for   a long time on this channel i've been avoiding  patterns because i just felt like they were a bit   visually overwhelming for people who are just  starting out with sewing but you know what guys   i think we're more than ready so in 2021 more  patterns dan reheated my chinese beef stew   in a way i made it the real hobby that i've  picked up is trying to improve my chinese cooking   now before i get to my last and hardest  project i did in 2020 i wanted to throw in   some honorable mentions from past years that  i'm still super proud of definitely includes   my sleeping bag coat you subscribed in the  last year you might not know but i made this   very very warm jacket out of a sleeping bag she's  got a maroon stripe detail she's teal all around   this was made out of a blanket and so was  this wrapped quilted coat pockets obviously   volume obviously i would move somewhere with  longer transitional weather just to wear this more   and the culmination this year of my honorary  degree in turning thrifted blankets into outfits   is this chanel jacket and skirt set buttonholes  pattern drafting invisible zippers with lining   interfacing with lining so many things that i've  been working on this year culminated in this   and it's all on details sometimes hard for  you to even see i try my best to convey it   all to you guys but personally when i look  at this i feel very very accomplished but   that's everything i made in my closet this  year i hope you guys really enjoyed this   recap through everything i've put together let  me know which one of these projects you're most   excited to give a try for everyone who's been  following my sewing journey over the years thank   you so much i got a few chances this year to be  interviewed by magazines and newspapers and a   lot of them asked about how i learned how to  sew and in every case i mentioned so much of   my learning takes place with my audience kindly  sharing their feedback as well as their tips so i   appreciate you all so much don't forget to check  out the description all the links that you need   are down there including the link for our sponsor  squarespace i'll see you all in the next video
