Making a bismuth knife to undo an injustice

made one out of milk but my favorite one that he did was where he made a knife out of bismuth and i thought it was one of the coolest knives i'd ever seen but then at the end he melted it down again and destroyed it and it made me really sad so since i saw that video i've been feeling like i want to remake the knife that i think should have never been destroyed in the first place so i'm trying to undo an injustice i have no knife making skills and i've never done anything like this before uh we'll see what happens step one is put this down because i have no idea what this is and step two step two is get some bismuth which i conveniently have right here it's nice and heavy 17.65 pounds that makes sense uh so we're gonna have to break this and the best way to do that is for the hammer okay which hammer we got this hammer just a regular hammer nice an axe and the last thing we have is a titanium hammer which one should we do first i mean okay i'm going to put the axle because it's not going to do anything i think there's one more weapon we could use what no you're talking about this thing oh yeah okay look at that nice big chunk that's so easy maybe two pieces like this 1.5 so not enough so 4.46 kilos and the next step is to melt it and uh we don't have we forgot to buy a cast iron pot for it uh okay so we have the pan okay now we can melt the pizza that's that's sturdy i basically just have to start it all right now we wait [Music] yeah so it's pretty liquidy we can turn down the heat and you can see all the slag that's on top it's always going to form you just want to get rid of like clumped up nasty stuff yeah i did a terrible job removing it look at that we already made something cool we're done look i keep dropping little metal drops oh oh my god okay so it looks about good i can do this and i'm gonna put on proper safety goggles okay so i think we're uh good to go oh my god it's just so much bismuth you can see it slowly solidifying from the end's end oh actually what's cool look crystals are forming there yeah i see it whoa so it's been like an hour or something and it's just barely yeah it's just barely warm to the touch so it's good to go so we have to do now is get it out of this so first i'm just gonna flip this around oh it's so heavy [Music] i hear it cracking this is the moment of truth probably won't come out i think it's falling out it just needs to be glass up a little more okay this will work better right okay okay this is a bit of a failure i think oh never mind it was i was no i was never concerned i knew it would work yeah i knew it would work look at that my gloves are smoking it's pretty nice it's pretty good okay so the next thing that we have to do is carve out the knife from this which is still hot we need like uh we need to trace a knife but we don't have one uh i think we're just gonna print a picture of a knife off the internet yeah we yeah we don't need a real knife we'll figure it out okay so we have to go to is looking this up who's been searching these things kitchen knife uh maybe we'll just get a regular one so what do we want something like that yeah you're the one you curse is you know what we're gonna do we're gonna go japanese so it turns out that it can't fit on the page okay we have to go buy one so we got the knife just a generic knife but we also got a donut hot wheels car i don't want this one here yeah i was hunting ugly okay do i risk it do we have another knife you can oh i did hit so time to trace the knife we're not going to do it on this side flip it over looks all right looks good okay ah perfect now take this over here okay so to cut it we're supposed to use this little thing oh my god it's gonna take forever now this is this i don't know you're almost there man like how well would this work i don't think that's going to work too well to be honest with you [Music] it honestly it's not going to work great because as you do it the the bismuth softens and melts i think it is faster just to go straight up with this thing you did it okay ah no that's the only one we had right yeah there was only one it came like that in the packaging you didn't buy another one no there's nowhere locally that i know of that sells uh another wire cutter so we're just gonna try to uh to hacksaw it it's gonna be really hard to do any curves or anything with this and by really hard i mean impossible you're breaking a sweat man [Music] okay now we gotta do like 10 more full table we definitely should have just molded it we should have just completely not did it like you on me and just molded it perfect so it's it's it's going okay okay all right okay oh my god this is tired it looks like a cartoon halloween knife now's the filing part no yeah we got a shape i don't really have many files god this is like the second half of the nightmare this is just never gonna finish now you definitely need one that grinds off more than this yeah this is hopeless this is going to take forever how you feeling so far it's okay it's better if i don't think about it it's like meditation you just kind of stop thinking about anything and the pain goes away dude this is what i used to do when i was 12. i just made knives in my garage before i did chemistry in my garage i made knives in my garage yeah we just just hammered pipes and then sharpened them it actually kind of looks okay i'll say it's better than what i thought so far look at that one to one wrap like that it's actually not it's pretty cool it's actually pretty accurate [Laughter] slightly thicker this is a oh it's a sanding block we're supposed to just be flattening the side now what is this this looks like a pretty rough sanding which way do you put it either way i think it's fine but is it this one that we're supposed to use i have no idea yeah something like that we're supposed to do it this way this literally might be just for sharpening the knife yeah i'm sorry i'm sorry are there instructions instructions it just leaves us on our own yeah i don't even know what that is [Laughter] the theme of this project is too much work i mean it's actually it's not doing it's not going horribly it's just really slow yeah so now i just gotta flip it over and do the exact same thing to the other side use the metal sandpaper man how that's designed that is designed for metal even though i had [Music] this it's looking actually pretty decent so far yeah but we still need to do the uh the actual important part which is cover it with bismuth crystals and then sharpen it that feels like actually the hard part so what we have to do is get that tray again and re-melt we have to make another pool of bismuth that we can uh dip the knife into i think the idea here this is probably better there we go yes we'll put like all the dust in the middle we gotta go scoop it up yeah we'll screw up the dust turn this on oh yeah where am i supposed to do this in the fume hood uh it's kind of an oversight there's no going back okay ah the powder it's a lot of it didn't even melt that's like about what we put in okay so the idea is you turn off the heaters and you let it cool down and you occasionally check what it looks like when you remove the slag and depending on the color that it makes it will tell you how hot it is so the goal is to keep skimming it until it looks like a reddish yellow i think this is the right temperature this is it hold on to it with your dear life dude this is okay and lift it up we can't do it too early oh it's terrible that's that's not good there ain't no crystals on that they were just starting to form oh what is that that is a crystal a single bismuth crystal on the end we did it that's actually kind of cool that is cool and it's changing colors right now but maybe put it back in no that's not really gonna work i just put it in too early but see now look you can see here when it gets a weird surface ripple it's because there's crystals growing look at this yeah they're growing from the bottom so this would be the perfect time no because then you would just hit solid stuff and it's like timing that is the key cory come here we'll give we'll do a reveal for you what do you think of this whoa oh my god is that a successful mission do you think if we just glued some more bismuth crystals on it that would count we can like just pick them out can you actually bismuth the other bismuth so we have one half i kind of want to see what it weighs i think it's like probably like at least probably like 1.596 oh no this really is just it's just a jacket yeah it's just a jacket how do we do this how is this how is this gonna work we can't hold on to this it's literally just gonna come right off do we like super glue it on oh i know what to do while it's still very hot i'm gonna dip it in and see if it glues it together oh there we go i feel like that will probably do something oh that should be good oh it's getting that rose gold please don't fall off okay i better take it out the knife's getting way too big oh and it's just like the other one we're just bad i think we just are bad i i spent the weekend thinking about it and i realized that we have to completely restart we just weren't putting it in the bismuth long enough so the goal now is to recover the main core of the knife and then we will try to dip it again but not do an awful job and i don't know if you can see this but if you look here you can oh yeah you see how it moves look at that just prying it open oh no no the jacket's gone so it melted there a bit but that's the blade parts doesn't really matter but we can actually keep we could keep this as a handle if we wanted to i mean or we could just create yeah i think i'm just holding on let go man [Music] i faith that it'll just it was work now it's like getting melted i should be a little bit smarter i have tongs where are they so i think it's like about ready now it has that like golden look the idea is to just hold it until it actually forms crystals [Music] oh what the hell okay you're gonna go ahead and re-melt it that's not what was meant to happen oh wow look at that that's amazing okay how's it doing it's good it's still got its uh hue i think this is it man lift it up slowly it's like touching the bottom so you can see crystals forming in it oh okay it's not like amazing it's okay right it's pretty sick but we could do better we'll just try again i can feel it it was too cold it's not good it's not good it didn't work it's stuck has to be hotter it's like the moment it looks rose gold you need to be on the ready to throw it in right away oh it's actually better you can see it has some uh look at those spires and it's turning blue i i think this is the best run this giant spires yeah this is one of the best runs we can try on the second half leaving it in a bit longer we'll try to get this edge even better yes the objective we're probably going to ruin you got it dude oh my god we lost crystal kinda like move it around yeah remember go deeper near the tip of the knife too you really wanted to yeah i don't really have the option though oh i see crystals forming that's so sick should i pull it out yeah pull it out it looks like it's getting real oh my god it's definitely more textured here because we left it in longer you see the little forest there the only thing that's difficult now is i can't if i put it down it's gonna bend all the forest things look at that just crystal at the back just fell off some of these big things are just not gonna stay on if we can preserve the little ridiculous antenna i don't think that's preservable unfortunately it sticks out way too much [Music] it'd be easier if we actually had a proper setup my god we lost the uh the intent we'll have to glue those back nice good technique it's gonna take forever this is the way there's still so much to go yeah it's getting its night shape back a little bit uh but now we need to from an angle here to here basically i need to somehow shave it off look it's looking good now i mean it's got a long way to go i need you to get to the actual like core so why do you got the mask on i'm just gonna breathe in the dust if i'm gonna be here for like 20 years i don't want to have to be exposed to that much dust you should move away why does it actually look okay it's not terrible so far when this is done it's going to be the the best bismuth knife in the world the best bismuth knight because the the better one was melted is it sharp yet nope yeah so here we got the edge now this could maybe cut something no so now we're not trying to really remove i feel like i'm giving a knife tutorial and i have no idea what i'm doing it's actually feeling a bit sharp now yeah to polish you just get finer and finer sandpaper like you see now it's already getting pretty shiny i feel like our goal here is good enough i think it can already cut a pickle gotta go until you can see your reflection whoa five thousand what how long has it been six hours i think so yeah what's the next one ten the last one it's ten ten thousand this doesn't even feel like sandpaper yeah ten thousand is not going to shine it we're going to need to do a proper polishing this is also years old so it just comes out as garbage it's like the final step oh yeah holy moly that's like i mean it's pretty weird yeah that's like top tier polish man i mean you can see the reflection we got some fruits here we got a a cucumber we're supposed to do this two weeks ago and uh a tomato they still look okay so i think it's time to cut it is that just because it's old okay that worked and look it even made cut marks in the uh yeah it even made cut marks on the board that's successful what the cucumber is scratching the knife there's no way [Music] move that aside move on to the tomato now so from our results it can cut cucumbers not tomatoes okay so yeah kind of useless as a kitchen knife but we knew that we knew it wouldn't be good it's more one of those knives that are just you're just meant to look at any time i think a project is going to be done in a certain amount of time we should multiply it by four and that's like a minimum that's not it no put it back all right that's the end okay so we're finally done and i just want to give a quick thanks to the
